"The coral reefs of south Sulawesi are some of the most diverse, colorful and vibrant in the world. At least, they used to be, until they were decimated by dynamite fishing in the 1990s.

As part of a team of coral reef ecologists based in Indonesia and the UK, we study the reefs around Pulau Bontosua, a small Indonesian island in south Sulawesi...

In many places around the world, damage like this might be described as irreparable. But at Pulau Bontosua, the story is different. Here, efforts by the Mars coral restoration program have brought back the coral and important ecosystem functions, as outlined by our new study, published in Current Biology. We found that within just four years, restored reefs grow at the same rate as nearby healthy reefs.

Speedy recovery

The transplanted corals grow remarkably quickly. Within a year, fragments have developed into proper colonies. After two years, they interlock branches with their neighbors. After just four years, they completely overgrow the reef star structures and restoration sites are barely distinguishable from nearby healthy reefs.

The combined growth of many corals generates a complex limestone (calcium carbonate) framework. This provides a habitat for marine life and protects nearby shorelines from storm damage by absorbing up to 97% of coastal wave energy.

We measured the overall growth of the reef framework by calculating its carbonate budget. That's the balance between limestone production (by calcifying corals and coralline algae) and erosion (by grazing sea urchins and fishes, for example). A healthy reef produces up to 20kg of reef structure per square meter per year, while a degraded reef is shrinking rather than growing as erosion exceeds limestone production. Therefore, overall reef growth gives an indication of reef health.

At Pulau Bontosua, our survey data shows that in the years following restoration, coral cover, coral colony sizes, and carbonate production rates tripled. Within four years, restored reefs were growing at the same speed as healthy reefs, and thereby provided the same important ecosystem functions...

Outcomes of any reef restoration project will depend on environmental conditions, natural coral larvae supply, restoration techniques and the effort invested in maintaining the project. This Indonesian project shows that when conditions are right and efforts are well placed, success is possible. Hopefully, this inspires further global efforts to restore functioning coral reefs and to recreate a climate in which they can thrive."

China’s exports rose year-on-year by 10.3% in RMB, driven by 20% to 40% jumps in exports to India, Brazil, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Africa and other countries of the Global South. This more than compensated for sharp declines in shipments to developed markets including the US (-7%), the European Union (-6.8%), and Japan (-2.5%).

The biggest gains were registered in BRICS members India (+16%), Brazil (+37.1%), and South Africa (14.8%), as well as Vietnam (+28.4%) and Indonesia (+22.2%).

China’s exports to the Global South surpassed exports to all developed markets during late 2022 and 2023[...]

The Chinese shipped semi-finished goods and components to third countries for final assembly and re-export to the United States. As the BIS wrote:

[Delta Green] Bones of the Earth universe

The birdfam consist of the 3 siblings Hrodwyn, Merethel, and Hygd, and their father Hrothgar. Originally from the GAWE campaign, I've ported these sparrows into other systems twice because 2 months with them was not enough. This tag contains all posts that includes them across the different games (GAWE, Helvetia, Dream in Drive).

A globetrotting homebrew campaign set in 2017-2019 based in Helvetia Ltd, the G20's secret hounds who are currently set on eliminating PISCES, GRU-SV8, M-EPIC, and Delta Green. @theroyalzealot is our Handler/GM and Gavrill "Hrothgar" Vorobyev is my PC (ported from GAWE, a Westmarches that happened before Helvetia). I'm currently writing stories and making comics about the Vorobyevs at @sparrow-flight!

Hrodwyn, who left their flock of sparrow hengeyokai, joins a group of people across the solar system to find a solution to the cancerous spread of Starblight/Stellaron. It kills and mutates organisms ranging from Hrodwyn's siblings and mother, to all 5 planets in this universe. This is where the Birdfam (the Vorobyevs) originated from!

SKSD // D&D5e Westmarches, Jan-Mar 2024

Scholarly Keepers of Sorcery in Dragonheart is a no-death, magic school campaign set in 2023/4 where technology is trying to wipe out magic. All races are just magic humans. I'm playing Dani, @katastrofish's NPC from Melati who I've often roleplayed as, and Fish is playing as their Melati PC, Simon!

Livia Post-Scott is one of the Marvellous Entrants in the Colosseum of Homados. A streamer who's trying to make it as a journalist,she joins the colosseum not to win it with her team of other players, but to get a good story for a journalism contest! This is my first Lancer campaign, and it went from LL2-LL8.

Calicifer (@katastrofish's PC) and Livia were originally from MECH. They were just friends in the campaign with a tiny, short-lived, one-sided crush from Calcifer, but after Mika reworked Calcifer's personality, we both went 'Won't it be funny if they ended up a thing in an upcoming Westmarches campaign? Let's have them be a biker/mechanic duo too.' So now they have their own tag!

Dream in Drive // Lancer RPG, hiatus

A short campaign with 2 groups ran by @theroyalzealot. We start as flashclones whose originals were killed in a terrorist bombing at a mall. Now, we're hunting the terrorists down so it won't happen again. I've once again ported Hrothgar in as my PC because I really want him on a Swallowtail. This time he's 22, happily married to Merlin, and cares for newborn Hrodwyn!

Ad Animus Per Aspera // Lancer RPG, ongoing

Livia's back in a new Lancer campaign! The planet Lethe recently uncovered xenoarchelogical remains. The last time this happened on another planet, pirates erradicated an entire species just to put their remains on the black market. As a rookie in the Union's Department of Justice and Human Rights, Livia travels 5 years in cyrosleep to Lethe to defend Lethe from this, even if it means fighting a war.

Brave New World // Mothership RPG Westmarches, ongoing

Sloane Mallory Croix is one of 200 individuals chosen for Project MORPHO: the third part of project to terraform the newly found planet Hestia and its solar system. However, MORPHO arrives 300 years late. Its crew is left to navigate this brave new world and its dark secrets while pursuing their original task.

# LA DESAPARICIÓN CIVILIZACIÓN DE LOS MARINEROS HACE 30.000 AÑOS

Según los últimos estudios del ADN humano, las primeras civilizaciones humanas en poblar América fueron los pueblos de América Central y del Sur. La primera colonización ocurrió hace al menos 15.000 a 20.000 años, mucho antes de lo que se pensaba.

Pero la verdadera revelación es otra. Esta colonización no fue hecha por tierra, desde el estrecho de Bering, como se creía. Esta gente vino por mar usando barcos. Los colonizadores vinieron de Siberia y Sundaland (el continente desapareció debido al deshielo, correspondiente a la actual Indonesia y las islas circundantes).
