Because the Baron Broods by Darcy Burke

Two people who thought they would remain single forever just might find something that will work better instead…maybe…

What I liked: * Tamsin Penrose: lives with her difficult widowed father, isolated, may have abandonment issues, has never had a season, looks forward to the month she spends with her grandmother and friends, a good friend, begins to question her future when she receives a letter…and meets Droxford. She reminds me of a bubblier Pollyanna.

* Isaac Deverell, Baron Droxford: good friend, a bit aloof, morally resolute, made a vow to himself when 17 years of age, trained as a lawyer, lost mother in childbirth with his brother, lived with rigidly religious father, uncle paid for his higher education, did not expect to be a Baron, carries guilt and regret, conflicted in more than one way

* That Isaac would not allow Tamsin to be ruined and though his reasoning was given…wondered if he really did like her more than he realized

* Tamsin’s grandmother: gardener, loving, kind, truly loved and appreciated her husband

* Isaac’s Aunt Sophia: loving, kind, goodhearted, generous, wise, matchmaker

* Getting to see the friends of Tamsin and Isaac – both groups in book one of the series and no doubt will show up again in the future

* The Burrows couple addition to the story and how they met in Marrywell [a reference to the Marrywell Brides Series by Darcy Burke]

* The way it all came together in the end though there were times I wondered what the two main characters saw in one another and whether or not they would find common ground

* Thinking about and wondering which of the supporting characters will show up in the next book

What I didn’t like:

* Who and what I was meant not to like

* The expectations of women, the power given to men, that scandal was so easily created by gossip, and thinking about how difficult life must have been without so many things – including contraceptives

Did I enjoy this book? Yes

Would I read more in this series? Yes

The Heiress Bride by Erica Ridley

The Heiress Bride by Erica Ridley is the newest book (#6) in the Lords in Love Series.  We even get to spend time in Marrywell again!  We are introduced to Tabitha and how she is being pressured by her father into marrying the odious Viscount Oldfield.  She does not want to, but she is trying to be a good daughter.  

Tabitha only wants to be a good daughter.  Her father is dying and she is trying to give him his last wish.  She does not want to marry the old, lecherous man. Tabitha leaves to go to the Marrywell Celebration, but his man of business Hudson Frampton is sent to watch her.  

Hudson and Tabitha have a good time but know that she needs to go back and marry.  The time comes for the wedding and Tabitha runs away and Hudson is sent to find her.  This time, they begin a relationship pretending to be married.  The closer to the second wedding, the more Tabitha is conflicted.  Will Tabitha and Hudson have their happily ever after ending?

The Heiress Bride by Erica Ridley is a good read.

Defying the Earl by Erica Ridley

Defying the Earl by Erica Ridley is the fourth book in the series called Lords in Love.  Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley are writing the series all based in Marrywell, England.  The town grows tremendously each year for the annual festival, May Day Matchmaking Festival. In this particular novel, only part of the book takes place in Marrywell and the rest takes place in and around London.  

Titus Noble lives a very regimented life.  He does the same things everyday in the same pattern.  He doesn’t allow people into his world or allow anyone to get close to him.  That is when a surprise is dropped on him by Aunt Stapelron.  He suddenly has a ward for the next month or so.  He is under the impression that she is quite out of control and needs a lot of help. 

Matilda Dodd is a month shy of having reached her majority.  She has decided that she is going to live her life!  She is persistently cheerful despite several direct cuts by some others.  Titus comes to her aid a couple of times.  Matilda is determined to be part of Titus’s world at least for a short time before she goes off on her own.  

What a wonderful story that brought Matilda and Titus together thanks to Aunt Stapelron!  I loved how the characters found their way to being open to life and laughter.  Defying the Earl by Erica Ridley was a great read.

Romancing the Heiress by Darcy Burke

Romancing the Heiress by Darcy Burke is the third book in the series called Lords in Love.  Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley are writing the series all based in Marrywell, England.  The town grows tremendously each year for the annual festival, May Day Matchmaking Festival. A lot of the festival happens at the local botanical gardens which is owned by Phineas Radford.  Phineas’ family has owned and taken care of the gardens for three generations.  Unfortunately, his father gambled away most of the money and they are on the brink of losing everything! Phineas has to marry - and fast - a heiress.  

Leah Webster left home long ago.  She had found work as a ladies’ companion. This year, she has brought her current employer and her family to Marrywell to find a husband.  Leah still loves Phineas after all these years, but once she knew the straits he is in, she nobly figures out how to get him a heiress. 

That's when there is a major plot twist.  Leah finds out the truth about something and it changes everything! The characters were fun and I enjoyed the plot. Romancing the Heiress by Darcy Burke was a great read.

Lords of London #3

 On a train to Salzburg, I read this charming friends-to-lovers tale of two people who meet again after less than a decade apart. Leah escaped a bad childhood to become a paid companion to Lady Norcott and enjoyed the experience…not so much her next job working for a relative of the woman.

 With family issues to be resolved by Leah, some skullduggery to be exposed, money to be found, matches to be made at the annual marriage festival in Marrywell, and romance brewing…it was a perfect way to spend hours on a train. In fact, the story I read on the train was much better than the hour I spent in Salzburg walking about while worrying about getting lost. I didn’t see the sites planned on in the city but did enjoy spending time with Leah and Phin.

Beguiling the Duke by Darcy Burke

Beguiling the Duke by Darcy Burke is the first book in a new series called Lords in Love.  The series is a collaboration between Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley.  I love reading their novels and always look forward to enjoying the next one.  The series takes place in the delightful village of Merrywell, which is known for its marvelous festival.

Sadie Campion has decided to participate in the May Day festivities this year in Marrywell.  She is determined to find a husband so she has a home and family.  It is her biggest desire.  Instead she has found herself slowly becoming the drudge of the family and helping everyone move forward.   Then one day a Duke came walking up the road.  

The Duke of Lawford was going to meet a woman who might be his wife until his carriage broke down and both of his men (valet and carriageman) were hurt and the nearest house brought them to Sadie’s house.  There is no way to get the carriage fixed and any messages sent as the entire town is totally all about the festival.  The Duke decides to get in the spirit of things and escorts Sadie to the festival.

A Duke and a nobody - won’t happen - not with all the available women.  Beguiling the Duke by Darcy Burke was a good read.  OH and the next book, Taming the Rake by Erica Ridley is a good read too!

Lords in Love #1

 Duke meets country woman and sparks fly – can they find happiness or is the societal divide too large to overcome?

 What I liked:

* Sadie: mid-twenties, only daughter with four brothers and widowed father, taken for granted, works hard, ready to settle down, eager to meet her match and start a home and family of her own

* Lawford: duke, brother, father sounded a bit overbearing, on his way to meet his almost betrothed, rather taken with Sadie, begins to realize what he wants and be willing to go for it

* The concept of the Marrywell Mayday Matchmaking Festival

* That Sadie’s family slowly began to realize they were taking advantage of Sadie

* The side romance between Mavis (Sadie’s maid) and Holdon (Lawford’s coachman)

* The introduction to a new series I believe will center around the Festival

* That it was a bit predictable and also a bit like a fairytale – a solid story but not my favorite by this author

 What I didn’t like:

* Who and what I was meant not to like

 Did I enjoy this book? Yes

Would I read more in this series? Yes
