I had no idea Mary Shelley's father told her something like this after she lost her child. Really, the biggest asshole ever.

It's no wonder you can see similarities between her life and the Frankenstein book so much. With a father like that I would be coping by dissing him in many books too...

And the similarities are something, I'm currently reading Frankenstein and I'm at the moment when Victor's father chides him for feeling depressed after the death of justine and his brother.

I thought that's definitely a cruel thing to say, it hasn't been that long and an unexplainably painful thing has happened.

And yet his dad proceed to make it about himself "No one could love a child more than I loved your brother." and in just one sentence he underlined several time how it's victor's 'duty' to get over it. Duty towards him, duty towards the dead, duty towards society. As if people don't want to see a person mourning too heavily. (Which sounds ridiculous but obviously it happens and even in my own experience people comment on how someone grieves, judge when it’s too long for their liking, or don't want to deal with that.) And he doesn't know Victor is partly responsible. It isn't Victor's duty to do anything, there's no duty in mourning.

And it's not the only time he doesn't want to let him feel what he does and is more concerned with what he should be doing according to his principles and society.

Like for example when his mother died, I was astonished how he sent his son away only 2 week after her death, knowing that he's sending his son away where he doesn't know anyone, in a foreign place, foreign COUNTRY, where there is no one to comfort him and help him cope. Change of the entire surrounding could be the worst thing to do in a time like this. And I got a feeling Victor says it like his dad was understanding enough to give him those two weeks...

Meanwhile, he once again put Victor's responsibilities first, instead of his feelings.

I could, and probably, will speak more about it but that's when I'll start having some free time outside of schoolwork.
