I cry a little every time I'm browsing the Marriage Toxin tag and there's yet another post like "shonen jump would never let Gero/Kinosaki be canon" "I won't get my hopes up that a shonen jump manga could ever be queer*" because
Tumblr media
Blue Flag is right there. Marriage Toxin is not the first queer shonen jump manga. If Gero gets to come out, he wouldn't be the first [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS]. Blue Flag is right there and it's so good please I am begging you to read it it is a crime against art and nature and me personally that such a well crafted story isn't better known
Blue Flag is about a high school love dodecahedron where half of them are queer, and the entire manga is about figuring out how to navigate what you want VS wanting the people you care about to be happy VS what society says will make you and your loved ones happy. Which is an inherently, inherently queer theme, and it is a goddamn masterclass of wordlessly showing character interority via body language, paneling, framing, and art. Frankly, the grounded tone is apples and oranges with the wacky comedic action of Marriage Toxin but Pleeeeease please please please read Blue Flag anyway both to make you feel better about the existence of queer shonen stories BUT ALSO because it's some capital L literature that literally everyone should read

olivia told me about this manga about a guy agreeing to get married so his assassin family would leave his gay sister alone and let her be with her girlfriend, which rules but; they keep showing back up in the middle of his insane assassin adventures to just keep turning it into yuri for a few pages at a time it rocks. it kicks ass. i love it so much.

It amuses me that in vitro fertalization has never come up in Marriage Toxin because it's such an obvious answer to the premise of "Well one of you gay kids needs to man up and pass on the family genes." Except that's just the premise that kickstarts Gero's quest; it's not the actual thing driving the plot. Gero's longing to have people to love and who love him back is the actual driver and core of the story. Jumping straight to IVF wouldn't actually solve anything for Gero or Akari, it would just continue the cycle of family abuse they were and still are subjected to. But if they unpack and break the cycle of abuse, then it becomes a viable way for Gero to get what he wants (and maybe Akari idk we haven't seen enough of her for me to have an opinion on if she would want kids)
Anyway, if I ever get around to writing Marriage Toxin fanfic, it would be two (2) sentences of Gerosaki get together and then 5,000 words of Kinosaki coaching Gero on how to ask his sister if he can get her girlfriend pregnant
