Currently listening: The turncoat by TJ London
That feeling when you don’t have to wait too long before reading/listening to the next book in a series! It wasn’t so long ago that I listened to and reviewed The traitor by TJ London, and I can already start The turncoat. With a slight change in the cast, and more narrators than before. John is now performed by Kale Williams, who’s new to me, but Tara Langella, Patrick Zeller and Marnye Young,…

@bk-poetry replied to your post “Sometimes I feel like an awful person because I don't have the willpower to avoid reading the tumblr dash. I just read it again...”
mood :(
I can't believe I have to be so honest about how sad I am, but like … it's not really that complicated a pattern. Every time I see "N. K. Jemisin is an asshole" or "Sylvania Marnye is trash," I feel a little bit of sadness, and I'm sick of feeling that, like maybe I should go see a sad person at a therapist or something

«Marnye, when I make a decision, it’s swift and immovable.»
«I know,» I choke out as Zack scowls and Windsor’s shoulders stiffen. Creed and Zayd exchange a look, glancing back at their fellow Idol like they are more than willing to kick his ass.
«So when I decided that I was in love with you, and that you were mine, I chiseled that decision on my heart in stone.» He steps forward and puts his finger under my chin, lifting my face up to meet his. «You’re mine, Marnye, and I’m not letting go. Not even if I have to share your heart. The way you love, it’s infinite. That’s more than enough for me.»

Critical Book Review:
Do You Follow? by J.C. Bidonde
Mentally ill people are more likely to be victims of crimes than perpetrators.
Mentally ill people are more likely to be victims of crimes than perpetrators.
Mentally ill people are more likely to be victims of crimes than perpetrators.
If we could tattoo that on the inside of thriller writers' eyelids, that would be great.

Big old spoiler: the main character and her murderous evil twin are the same person thanks to Dissociative Identity Disorder!
Tumblr media
That's not how it works! That's very not how it works!
I guessed that's where the book was going pretty early on, and I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised, but no. It just leaned into demonizing mental illness.
Tumblr media
The big twist at the end that the central murder victim had planned to commit suicide by protagonist to generate social media buzz was meant to be more surprising than it was, but even if Alexa/Beth hadn't been responsible for his death, she had still murdered someone else while suffering from DID.
It doesn't help that mental health resources are frequently mocked.
The setup is also pretty unrealistic. Alexa, who has no degree, gets hired by a social media marketing firm as a marketer, and gets paid enough to afford an apartment by herself in NYC in a neighborhood good enough that she goes walking around outside at night without a second thought, with enough money left over to buy vats of takeout. And on Day One at her job, she's handed a client and basically given no supervision. This is portrayed as totally normal and not in any way a deus ex machina.
Tumblr media
Aside from a few minor pacing issues due to clumsy time-skips, there wasn't anything technically wrong with the book, and the audiobook narrator (Marnye Young) was a good fit.
I got the audiobook as an ARC from NetGalley and Greenleaf.
TWs for gun violence, animal cruelty, scars, and wounds.
If it had been a good twin/evil twin book, four stars.
As it is, 2/5 stars.

I’m still thinking about the world of the Rich Boys of Burberry Prep. I just finished book 2 and still loving the series. I’m exhausted for Marnye...all the bullying she had experienced and the future looks like more of the same and maybe getting more dangerous and deadly. Despite all of that she comes out at the top...she gets good grades, #1 among her peers and she gets to be a cheerleader. She still manages to attract the good people to her side. Although they’re small in number, these people who stick to her side have even more power and wealth and influence, so it’s reassuring they’re there to back her up. Despite all the revenge and the plotting, I like the h here. She’s not stupid. She has a backbone. She is not indecisive. She is still good inside despite all that has happened to her. She is likable.
So far, the story has engaged me. I can connect with Marnye and what she’s going through. I can feel her pain and her rage. I cheered for her when she overcome and come out winning. I hope she doesn’t have to choose but gets them all. 😉😉🥰
