Agent Oc Masterpost!

I don't really talk a lot about my agent oc lore or what they're like so I thought it would be a good idea to make a big main post about it. I also made new refs for artfight so it's also an excuse to post them

Here’s an informal little post about stuff that’s useful to know about Marlo or their canon milieu that I didn’t wanna bother formalizing on the carrd.

Marlo is not Captain, not technically. Although Cuttlefish promoted them and gave them the hat and all, Callie later overrode that decision. They’re still sticking their nose where it doesn’t belong in Alterna and decoding the logs. But this point is flexible, so if Neo 3s want to run into them, interact with their replacement (Rome, my Agent 4), or just have them be Captain anyway, that’s all fine.

Otherwise their time’s spent at their teaching job (8th and 9th grade humanities) in a run-down little Splatsville district or back at Shellendorf Institute in Greater Inkopolis.

They also work for Cuttlegear’s Agency, which’s similar in function but distinct from the New Squidbeak Splatoon; it’s a government intelligence agency. Their job is counterintelligence and, as with their archivist job, they were hired not through legitimate credentials but their specialized knowledge and connections. Not many people know about this job, especially not the other agents.

In that vein, Marlo prides themself on knowing as much about Octarians as they can. Which can include personnel files, projects and experiments, and the like, if you would be comfortable with or interested in Marlo having some background knowledge on your muse.

When it comes to duplicates, Marlo will be inherently hostile. They’re enormously defensive of their title—or what remains of it—and won’t hesitate to unload derision and skepticism on yours. I have an Agent None verse (or other ocs, lol) if that isn’t your cup of tea.

Apart from the fact that Octavio never brainwashed his military, Marlo’s canon differs significantly in the fact that they sided with Commander Tartar. Eight still lived, but, you know, not because they wanted them to; and they still got Sanitized.

Marlo’s from the bayous of North America as their Southern accent betrays and came to Inkopolis in pursuit of their brother, Adonis. They’re also partially Octoling, though they don’t know that.

You cannot misgender them. Don’t call them ‘enby’ but anything else flies.

1.) Do they play inksports? If so, what is their favorite game mode? Least favorite?

soda plays regularly with rome, usually rounded out by andy and lyn, two of rome's friends who met by virtue of their little siblings being squidforce models. (in that respect, soda is the odd one out by being the younger sibling herself.) she's... kind of awful at anything that isn't vanilla turf war—her skills so conveniently lend themselves to fighting against rote octarian strategies, not whatever s-rankers have going on—and isn't professionally part of the team. her least favorite is tower control, it's brutal and frustrating.

perry is an octarian weapons-engineer, too old and (paradoxically) too peaceable for that. she has no dislike of inklings at large but certainly finds it the least appealing part of their culture.

2.) Are they more competitive or casual?

soda is a competitive casual, i'll put it like that. she is both an avid student of many professional tactics—has a comprehensive knowledge of the meta, if you will—and really nothing to sneeze at, but for all her theory she's just not good at the game. she's played in a few tournaments, and of course she strives to become s+ rank like so many others, but that goal will quickly wear out because it just doesn't resonate with her. turf war was never going to be something she dedicated her life to.

3.) Do they work Salmon Run shifts?

i see i am forced to answer for Splatoon 2-era anyway. in short, marlo fucking hates salmon run. she's had enough risking her life for power eggs at the behest of a sketchy boss. i don't think that'd change for a younger marlo, either—the industry hit big at the lowest point of her life thus far, and even if it hadn't, she'd see no glory in it. similarly, she knows nothing about the salmonids beyond where their trade intersects octarian culture; she does find grizz fascinating but have very little hope of learning anything about him and aren't willing to stick her neck out quite that far.

nor does perry's station have much to do with it; she occasionally handles power eggs in her caretaking of the octoweapons but the trade is left to another division.

4.) What is their favourite weapon? And their main weapon (if it is different from their favorite)?

perry underwent mandatory training in the octoshot like every octoling (she is technically military, if auxiliary, but virtually every octarian citizen gets some combat training), but is loathe to use it. she's more likely to sic all the octoweapons on you and/or hotwire the octobot king for her own purposes.

soda has the uncanniest fascination with inkbrushes to this day and i have no idea why. they don't suit her play style, she can't use them to save her life, every last one of her love interests have used brushes for some reason, i don't know what the common denominator must be but apparently soda is into it. she actually favors shooters with a high fire-rate and good maneuverability—mostly o-matics and aerosprays, in this era the neo splash and rg in particular.
