Today's post is St. Innocent's 2014 Pinot Noir from their Freedom Hill Vineyard. This Willamette Valley Pinot is a New World alternative to Burgundy. St. Innocent's owner and winemaker Mark Vlossak recently moved his winery to the South Salem Hills in Oregon. This deep rich wine offers dark cherry, red fruit and spice notes which blend well with with a minerality/earthiness that is distinctive of Oregon Pinot Noir. Freedom Hill Vineyard produces Pinot noirs with structure, depth, and richness as well as a strong sense of minerality. The vineyard, owned and managed by Dan Dusschee, is located in the foothills of the Coast Range mountains which helps to keep the vineyard cool at night. Cool nights help to maintain the acidity in the wine and help cool the grapes so they do not ripen too quickly and the combination of ripe tannins and acidity produces Pinot noir with great structure. The grapes were de-stemmed and fermented in stainless steel with natural yeasts and without the use of Sulphur Dioxide.
