Market Women by Daisy Myrie
Down from the hills they come, With swinging hips, and steady stride to feed the hungry town.
They stirred the steep, dark land To place within the growing seed. And in the rain and sunshine tended the young green plants.
They hoed, and reaped, and now, as Heaven has blessed their toil, They come, bearing the fruits; These handmaids of the Soil, Who bring full baskets down to feed the hungry town.

Dawn
For Cosette Appreciation week
*
Less than three weeks after Jean Valjean and Cosette had bid their farewell to the convent of Petit-Picpus, Cosette was awakened by a sound of knocking.
“What’s this?” she wondered, rubbing a sleepy hand over her eyes. It was not yet dawn: in the dim light, she could just make out the form of her papa standing in her doorway. “Is something the matter?”
Papa tilted his head. Cosette couldn’t quite make out his expression, but something about that tilt seemed almost mischievous to her eyes.
“A surprise,” was the cryptic answer. “Dress warmly, and come meet me downstairs.”
Cosette hastened to obey. A surprise! What surprise could possibly wait for them at this hour?
True to his word, Jean Valjean was waiting in the hallway, wearing a weathered yellow coat that Cosette dimly recalled from her childhood, with a faded workman’s cap pulled down over his eyes. Soon the pair was making their way outside to the Rue de l’Ouest.
The street was busy, despite the early hour. Grocers were opening their shops, marketwomen were hurrying to their stalls, even as the great carts rolled in from the environs of the city, bringing the fresh produce to feed that great beast called Paris. Cosette observed this all with rapt fascination.
At Place Saint-Michel. Jean Valjean stopped at a bakery to purchase a round loaf of bread, still warm form the oven, which he handed to Cosette. Cosette considered the loaf, before tearing it in half with a great effort, and handing the greater piece back to her papa.
Cosette was in the seventh heaven. How many times had she cast a glance towards the gardener’s hut in the early mornings, wishing she could spend the day with her papa? She had known she was lucky, for she could visit him every day, while her friends suffered a far greater separation from their families. Yet there was something in that mixture of closeness and separation, that ever teased her imagination about missed possibilities. To be able to walk freely in Paris by her papa’s side, with warm bread in her hands and predawn October air crisp with the promise of winter, at the very hour where convent girls would be getting ready for their classes – that was a fulfillment of every whim her young mind had ever dreamed up.
So preoccupied was she in her excitement, that she hardly wondered where they were going, even when the Luxembourg gardens were long behind them. The morning light took on a noticeably brighter quality, as they crossed the bridge to Île de la Cité and beheld the dark form of Notre Dame in front of them.
“Are we going to the church then?” asked Cosette, as they approached the slumbering behemoth.
There was definitely a bit of mischief in the way her papa peered at her from under his cap.
“Perhaps,” he replied, and said no more.
Instead of approaching the looming front entrance of the cathedral, however, he led Cosette to a little side door, almost unnoticeable in the shadow of the grand building. The doorman accepted a coin from Jean Valjean, and offered Cosette a bow that made the child giggle, before gesturing them onwards.
Crossing the door, the pair came face to face with a narrow staircase, the rough-hewn steps spiralling upwards into the sepulchral depths of the tower, as if it was a stomach of a great stone monster.
“You first,” Jean Valjean introduced, and Cosette didn’t let herself be told twice, barely minding the steps as she rushed ahead, fascinated.
By the time Jean Valjean and Cosette came back into the open air, the sun had already risen. Cosette could see it mirrored bright on the rooftops below them, realised that she need only follow the invitation of narrow pathways that surrounded the towers, and she would soon be bathed in this golden light. Yet on that moment, she could hardly breathe, so mesmerized by the sight in front of her that Jean Valjean had to gently nudge her along to make his own way onto the pathway.
Down below, the city was stirring – not quite awakening, for this great beast never sleeps, but becoming more aware all the same. The warm light bathed it from above, even as the street level still held onto the chill of autumn night. The streets were busy now, the doors opened and closed, people and carriages passed Parvis Notre-Dame at their feet and their voices floated upwards.
The city breathed. It stirred and thought and plotted, and worked and ate and drank and laughed. It sung and it wept and it prayed. And right in the middle of it, like a dark ribbon, the river Seine bore witness and carried away all that was admitted to her.
Cosette felt the sharp sting of a morning wind on her face and realised that her cheeks were wet.
“Papa,” she started, then fell silent, quite at loss of words.
Behind her, a warm arm wrapped around her shoulders, offering more shelter from the wind than all the majestic bulk of the mighty cathedral ever could. “So you like it, then?”
“Papa,” Cosette repeated and said nothing more. For the next several minutes they stood together in silence, the young soul and the old, witnessing the birth of a new day.
Below them, the city breathed.

hello!! during these trying times I would *love* to hear about your ninerose human nature au (if you have time/whatever obviously!!) 💞
hello, nonny! from my very great distance of at least six feet and a computer screen away, i send you hugs and health and happiness. i hope you're staying safe and taking care of yourself and others!
i can hardly call the idea for a ninerose human nature au my own, because i feel like there are other, better writers who have toyed with the concept, and i don't have any formal writing about it done, but... i do have some notes from a very enthusiastic chat session i had with @lotsofthinkythoughts! so, if you'd enjoy those, i present them here. (i'm in italics, thinky is in bold.)
i have them sort of set in the thirties or forties, but somewhere super rural and in a cottage that belongs to the doctor through some weird arbitrary series of "distant relations" and rose is pretty bad at trying to fit in, because basically everything she does is considered scandalous and she can't get away with just being his roommate.
she grumbles about that a lot to the TARDIS. "couldn't have landed a little later? where i could just be his roommate and no one would care about my jeans?" then she sighs, "i know you did your best, girl. i know."
since they're out in the middle of nowhere, nobody really bothers them, but rose has to get good at gardening, because the old marketwomen won't sell to "the fallen woman living up at bad wolf cottage" or whatever. and so she spends a lot of time out in the heirloom orchards and figuring out how to harvest things and feeding chickens, maybe.
i'm picturing rose doing her best to learn all this. rose picking apples and nine coming out to steady the ladder after he sees it wobbling from the window. and very pointedly averting his gaze so he doesn't accidentally stare at her bum and blushing when she laughs. "i'm wearing trousers, you know, it's not like you can look up 'em."
oh GOD. rose in era-appropriate trousers. clearly altered men's pants. oh my GOD.
...i just thought of her in a clearly altered pair of HIS trousers. like the legs are still way way too long and hemmed up and stuff but OH GOD.
(as you can see, we got very excited about the pants situation.)
and this man she's living with who thinks she's just his good friend and companion comes out and helps and it's so PAINFULLY obvious that he's in love with her, and rose is just like, "what. am i going to do."
but she can't act on their feelings, because she's convinced he'll FREAK when the doctor returns to himself. but dammit if john isn't the sweetest, always running out to help her dig in the dirt or asking if he can push the wheelbarrow or get more chicken feed from town.
also, i bet he has some kind of jaunty hat she steals from him, for when she works in the sun.
(as you can imagine, we also got enthusiastic about the many ways human!nine would feel about rose tyler gardening in his stolen hat.)
but yeah, she's SURE she can't act on things because when the doctor comes back to himself he'll be upset.
and he just... wants to kiss her so badly, but he's pretty sure she had a bad relationship and that's why she's living here? she had to get away, and he doesn't want to betray her trust in him.
i just... i had the sudden image of rose crying one night and john coming to check on her, knocking gently, and when she responds sniffling he peeks in her room and they end up talking and he curls up behind her on the bed over the covers and they hold hands and i just... cannot. IT WOULD BE SO SOFT.
and her not being able to explain why she's crying, and he doesn't expect her to.
he just curls up with her and says he's there for her and she bursts into tears again and he just holds her. possibly kissing the top of her head. saying to himself it's for comfort. (and it is, it definitely is just to comfort her.)
but i feel like that night breaks something open emotionally and he touches her a lot more after that - never anything forward because he still doesn't want to move too fast or more than she wants him to, but after that there's more casual touches than before.
when nine comes back to himself, before he can stop himself, he kisses rose.
he hasn't even changed his clothes yet, he just can't contain his affection.
YEP. he looks at her, searching her eyes, and she whispers "doctor?" and he just... lunges forward. and at first rose is worried that something's gone wrong, but as his arms wrap around her she knows—because no one has ever held her the same way as the doctor does, kiss or no kiss.
and he breathes into her hair, "thank you, thank you for taking care of me, i'm so glad you're with me."
and she tears up and says "i'm so glad i met you... that i got the chance to be here," into his shirt.
(and then i fell asleep. oops!)
i hope our conversation brightens your day. keep in mind that we were talking about a very specific moodboard and were completely uninterested in a sensible plot. there is no plot in this house—only kisses.

Although this culture generally allowed women on the public scene because they were economically productive, it did not do so without friction. The evidence of this tension is quite old—it precedes the well-known cultural wars on gender in the European Renaissance by almost two centuries. The oldest fabliaux in French (many of which were written for urban audiences in Artois, southern Flanders, and Hainaut) ridiculed, satirized, but also celebrated conflicts between slow-witted men and sly women, between impaired masculinity and ambitious femininity, as early as the first decades of the thirteenth century. Sources from legal practice teach us that however necessary or productive, a woman’s public appearance often signaled potential disorder. ... In 1360, the city magistrate of Brussels prohibited the annual election of a ‘‘queen’’ by the marketwomen and its accompanying female festivities, apparently because it led to aggression against males in the previous years. In other public spaces, a woman’s behavior was obviously subject to much greater constraints than was a man’s. … The Book of Matheolus, one of the most virulent misogynist tracts of the Middle Ages, written by a cleric in southwest Flanders in 1290–92, likewise skewered women for their vanity (and monstrous nature) but also for their inorderly use of speech, the cunning sophistry by which they invariably deceived their husbands. A Middle Dutch satirical sketch of urban life, written about 1325, depicted women textile workers of Brussels hanging about the street and verbally harassing male passersby with sly double entendres. After tricking the men into giving them money and drinks, the rambunctious women run off to go ice skating on the canals. …
