Note: As always, English is not my first language. I thought it was kind of criminal that I can't find much for Marius. I guess I really write most of my fics about the people (bees) that aren't incredibly popular. This is completely fictional. Please do not copy or publish my work, reblogging is fine!

She and Marius had been living together for a few months now. She moved in with him when they were together for six months, not wanting to spend a lot of nights without each other anymore. Of course there were the away games and boys/girls weekends, but those were the exceptions. Their one year anniversary is coming up and she realized that they haven’t deep cleaned the apartment since she moved in. She doubts it was deep cleaned by Marius before. Of course it was tidy and they cleaned the house weekly, but there are parts of the house they don’t really pay attention to. 

So now that Marius is away for the game against Stuttgart, she decided it was time for a deep clean. Especially after last week, when Marius was ill and she took care of him. It can’t hurt to deep clean everything to get rid of the germs. So that’s why she’s now cleaning the kitchen, the last part of the house to clean. In the past few days, she started at the attic and worked her way down through the house. Of course she took some breaks and she even watched the game, only to be disappointed when Marius didn’t get any minutes and the game ended in a draw. 

Marius comes back home today and she hopes to be done by the time he gets there. The music is loud and she’s completely focussed on cleaning, dancing and singing. Hence why she doesn’t hear the front door open and close or the way bags drop to the floor and him calling her name. When he doesn’t get a response, he decides to follow the music. And there she is, completely focussed on cleaning the countertop, swaying her hips to the music whilst she sings along. She doesn’t like to sing around him because she thinks her singing isn’t good enough, but sometimes, like today, she doesn’t notice he’s there. And he enjoys her voice more than anything. 

So he watches and listens, not bothering to announce his arrival. He can’t help but think how beautiful she is. She’s wearing nothing special and yet she is the most beautiful girl in the world to him. When the song changes to a slower song, the pace of her cleaning slows down too. That’s when he decides to let her know he’s there. He comes up behind her slowly and softly, trying not to startle her, wrapping his arms around her waist. She startles a little but she relaxes when she sees the tattoos on his arms. She leans back into his hold and he presses a kiss to her temple. 

“Hallo liebling, ich habe dich vermisst." 

“I’ve missed you too. I’m sorry you didn’t get to play yesterday.”

He just shrugs and pulls her a little closer. She drops the rag she was using and puts her hands over his. They stand there for a while, just swaying to the music that still plays around the kitchen. When the song changes to a more upbeat song, he pulls away from her. Immediately a sound of discontent leaves her mouth, only to turn into a laugh when he turns her around and starts dancing with her. They dance together for a while, he spins her a few times before pulling her closer. She laughs in pure joy, throwing her head back and letting out a full belly laugh. She doesn’t see it, but the way he looks at her can only be described as loving and admiring. He laughs along with her, her joy contagious.

When her laugh stops, he pulls her close to his chest. Her arms wrap around his neck and their foreheads touch. Both of them close their eyes, taking in the moment and each other. They sway a little, but don’t even notice they’re out of beat with the music. All they can focus on is the feeling of holding each other. Without him noticing she sneaks her hand up to his bun. He only notices her hands are there once she starts undoing his bun, he doesn’t do anything to stop her though. She puts the band around her wrist before running her hands through his her. He leans into her a bit more as she plays with his hair. If she catches any knots, he doesn’t notice at all, with how gentle she’s being.

“Ich liebe dich.”

Her whisper is soft and she softly rubs her nose against his before leaning in to capture his lips with hers. The kiss is soft and slow, but shows all the love they feel for each other. Eventually they have to let go because they need to breathe. He reciprocates the phrase and presses a few kisses to her cheek. She smiles as he does so, tangling her fingers in his hair a little more. She pulls back a little to look at him, suggesting that she makes him some food. He agrees, but doesn’t leave her side for a second. She gets the ingredients she needs to make his favourite snack and once they’re all collected, he wraps his arms around her again. His chest against her back, whilst his chin touches her shoulder. 

“I deep cleaned the house whilst you were gone.” He pulls away a little to look at the side of her face. She turns her head a little to look at him. “I realized we hadn’t done that since I moved in and after you were ill last week, I thought it was a good time.”

“Why didn’t you ask me liebling, I could have helped you.” She looks at him a little surprised, she didn’t think he’d be up for it. She presses a kiss to his cheek before returning to her task. “Thank you for cleaning the house, but next time let me help you.”

She nods her head at his request. He presses another kiss to her temple as she finishes up with his snack. She puts it on the counter and he takes a seat on one of the stools. As he eats, she makes him a drink and finishes cleaning the last bits of the kitchen. Every once in a while she passes Marius and presses a kiss against his cheek, showing him that she’s missed him and that she’s happy he’s back home. She moves out of the kitchen to put the rags she used in the washing machine and she immediately takes his bags to sort out the dirty laundry for him. He finishes the snack and immediately puts away the dishes before following her to the laundry room.

“You know you don’t have to sort my dirty laundry and football kit right?”

“I know, but I want to. You work very hard for the team, it’s the least I can do since I moved in. I still work too, but not as intensely as you do.”

He smiles at her and as she stands up, she tries to move past him to get to the laundry that needs to be folded. She doesn’t get that far though as he wraps her back up in his arms. 

“Marius, let me go. I need to fold that last bit of laundry.”

“Let me do that, you go back to the kitchen and get us some drinks. Then you can look for a movie and once I’m done, we can watch it together.”

She smiles at him gratefully. He presses another kiss to her lips before they part ways. It doesn’t take long before both of them are snuggled up on the couch. Her head is resting right above his heart, the most comfortable place to lay down in her opinion. It’s comforting to listen to his heartbeat and knowing he’s right there with her. His hand is caressing her back and every once in a while he presses kisses to the crown of her head. It’s the way he shows his love for her, pressing kisses to different parts of her face. It’s his way to feel her warmth and where he finds comfort in her presence. Both of them wouldn’t want it any other way.

I finally saw Les Miserables live in Milan yesterday so obligatory yap:

Okay first of all: KILLIAN DONNELLY?!?!?!? I was already excited that I was going to see him as Valjean but god that man's voice is just so beautiful. He played a spectacular Valjean, he dominated the stage and the crowd went wild every time he sang. I have no words. Just. What an experience. The whole cast was amazing but jesus, this man could do a one man show of Les mis and id give my first born to see it. Also, he carried around Marius's actor like he weighed nothing, that's so Valjean of him. Also, his soliloquy broke me, how he tried to give back the candlesticks after the bishop gave them to him, how he let the bag fall on the floor and picked it up only later. The emotion he put into his singing constantly brought tears to my eyes. What a voice. Indescribable

JAVERT!!!! Bradley Jaden was amazing. I love how much rage he gave to his character, it felt very true to the novel, on how he's compared to a wolf. In stars he's so devoted but the part that literally shook me was after he let Valjean and Marius go: he literally lost his mind and shouted "WHO IS THIS MAN" with such a wild air I literally gasped. He was unhinged during that song, so outraged and bitter and I loved it. It almost felt like he was killing himself to take Valjean's act of mercy away from him instead of his internal turmoil and honestly? I loved it. He had such a presence on stage it literally felt like he was the law. Also let's be honest, he rocked the coat

I LOVED Channa Hewitt as Fantine, She had such a warm and soft voice it felt like a mother's embrace. I cried 4 times during the show and 2 of those were Fantine's death and Fantine's part during the finale. She was perfect

Nathania Ong as Eponine????? I don't think I've ever heard someone sing her parts as perfectly as her. What a voice. Honestly I think the applauses for her were some of the longest and they were completely deserved. She made me cry. Amazing. Spectacular. I fell a little bit a lot in love. Unfortunately she missed the "He was never mine to lose" line but I think it was because her microphone wasn't connected?? Never mind she was perfect.

I know you all want to know about our boys Enjolras and Grantaire so. There wasn't much enjoltaire going on tbh but I didn't mind, I still think the actors (James D. Gish and Raymond Walsh) were perfect and I love their performance. Enjolras was completely focused on the revolution and keeping the others on track, while Grantaire mainly stuck with Gavroche all throughout. Enjolras's most positive reaction to grantaire was ironically clapping with the others at R's jokes once during Red and Black, but apart from that he was fairly hostile to him. During Drink With Me he tried to stop R from singing and bringing down morale by getting close to him and roughly saying "That's enough!" into the same microphone; after he stopped singing and everyone started moving away Enjolras tried to stop Grantaire or talk to him, he seemed kind of apologetic, but R Simply raised his bottle to him in a mock toast and then turned his back to him and I loved that, I love a bitter and petty Grantaire. Grantaire at the beginning was very amused by the whole situation and the excitement of the others, during red and black and the building of the barricade he kept hyping Gavroche up and parting his shoulder, nudging him towards the others as if it was all a game. When the first shots sounded he seemed to realize the gravity of the situation and started nudging Gavroche away and motioning for him to go away; later when the shooting for the fall of the barricade started sounding he lifted Gavroche in his arms and held him as the others started to fall until only them and Enjolras stood; then Gavroche went limp and R died with him, Enjolras died last. For the rest of the show and for Empty Chairs at Empty Tables Enjolras, Grantaire and Gavroche were on the small balcony/platform over the centre of the stage and to be honest it had a very "Father, Son and Holy Spirit" vibe in my opinion.

One Day More was absurd, it gave me chills all throughout.

When Valjean died and the bishop came in the hugged each other very hard, Valjean basically fell into the bishop's arms and that hit me hard.

Gavroche was so sassy I loved him.

Honestly everyone was perfect I literally have nothing bad to say. I think Enjolras's actor lost controls of his voice on a sillable but who cares, it was all amazing.

I also got merch! (It was all so expensive????? But I couldn't help myself). I got a tote bag with Cosette's famous illustration, a magnet and a brochure with the history of Lea Miserables and information and interviews of the World Tour cast. I also got 2 of the paper bags (they were cute okay) and my mum grabbed a literal handful of the bookmarks they were giving away lmao.

I'm sure I had something else I wanted to say but after these last 3 days my brain is completely scrambled. If any of you were at the show yesterday or are going in these days feel free to hit me up so we can go crazy together lmao

29. BULGARIA Intelligent Music Project - “Intention” 38th place

To whoever ran BNT’s twitter account this season: feigning unselfawareness about your home entry’s shittness for the sake of fan service is SO unfunny and embarrassing I’m surprised Subwoolfer haven’t tried it yet (and Subwoolfer have recently said they want to delete Amber Heard from life!). Bring me some other shtick once you’ve found another sponsor.

Anyway, this year’s Bulgarian sponsor was a self-made filthy rich ~BizNizMen~ who writes dated 80s dad rock in his spare time. He’s also the owner of a pet band whose sole purpose is to perform his insipid compositions at fundraiser gigs (usually held at Bulgarian embassies in other countries lol). If you think that would lead to a pontificating and  shitty “Identitët” (Shitentitët? 🤔) as the entry DING DING DING you are correct!

As one should expect from a band that dubs itself as “intelligent”, in comes the pseudo-intellectual lecture about taking matters in your own hands, building up a capitalist empire and getting filthy rich instead of loafing around playing video games all day. You’re not my father, stfu!!!.” If Only GenZ Had The ~Intention~ Do Something Great With Their Life”. Of course, upon its release -in early December 2021- nobody gave a single fuck about “Intention” and it was promptly ranked last on all the lists forevermore. 🤗 Inconceivable that everyone had negative cares about soulless rock muppets that that preached capitalism via a fucking dr. Seuss-like chorus, who completely wasted Stoyan Yankoulov like he’s Darude repping Finland. INCONCEIVABLE!

However, for an entry this limp, it had... fairly decent staging? Look, I’m splitting hairs here, right? The song’s a damp squib, Ronnie loafs around looking like greasy and unkempt serial rapist, and the rest might as well be provincial stage actors (you’re not telling me that “bass player” has EVER held a guitar before Turin), BUT the stage show actually put in that investor money for good camera shots, pyros, your standard eurovision rock stuff! Even a little bit managed to elevate a literal deaf fish of a song into something semi-unobjectionable! Now imagine what could have happened if a song with any actual merit had received the same treatment.

It’s barely enough to put “Intention” ahead of like... idk Greece or Montenegro, or the other vaguely irritating bores the sheeple were hyping up. Slightly exceeding expectations where there are none gets you further in life, and with “further” I mean 29th on this ranking instead of like 32nd. CONGRATZ!!! i guess.

Goblin Velite - CR3 Humanoid

A goblin soldier based on historical Roman infantry, wearing a barghest pelt.

This creature was actually a request that I thought was interesting enough to try my hand at.

Velites were javelin-wielding light skirmishers in the Roman army.  They formed the front lines of Roman forces for a period of time, though their lack of armor made them rather lacking in staying power.  They’re probably the most distinctive looking unit, with their super stylish wolf pelts.  Military reforms by General Marius phased them out.

The image depicts a wolf pelt but these goblin soldiers are actually wearing barghest pelts.  Barghests are unique fiends that come from the Abyss in Pathfinder’s official setting (or Gehenna, in D&D’s official settings) but aren’t demons, or even chaotic, and come to the material plane to devour non-evil humanoid souls so they can transform into stronger versions of themselves.

Although these are expendable, front-line soldiers, they’re not weak.  Just by looking at them, one can tell that they’re capable of killing barghests in order to harvest their pelts.  In fact, doing so is a sure-fire way for an aspiring soldier to earn entry into a velite military unit (though not the only way, as the pelts are also handed down).  Barghests are shapechangers that infiltrate goblin society by disguising themselves as goblins, and velites are also responsible for seeking them out and destroying them.  Velites fight these fiends in groups however, not alone.  A single goblin velite is unlikely to stand a chance against a CR 4 barghest.

Mechanically, I designed these using the 3pp armiger class by Rogue Genius Games as inspiration, though I didn’t actually follow that class’s build rules precisely.  Imagine this as an archetype of armiger that trades away the heavy armor features for an additional armiger talent and 2 bonus feats by level 4.  It works well for helping a group of these things fighting side by side to actually survive in the front lines, considering their lack of armor.  In fact, for cloth-wearing NPCs, they ended up being incredibly sturdy.  Their terrible offense makes up for this, so maybe put some archers behind them.

When fighting in groups, they perform ranged trip maneuvers to knock heavily armored enemies down before they can reach them, and then their allies run up and use Catch Off-Guard to make melee attacks against the prone enemies with their javelins without the typical penalty for using a javelin as a melee weapon.  They always move in groups, never alone, and will delay their turns to be able to move at the same time.  When they don’t need to move, they use their Citadel ability on each other.

Spear Brace lets them hold a javelin in each hand without losing their shield bonus, and that’s how they go into fights, so they can throw two of them before they need to spend a move action drawing another.  Not quite as good as quick draw, but better than nothing.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Bulwark (Ex) A goblin velite knows how to protect not just itself, but also how to help protect its allies.  A goblin velite grants cover to any ally adjacent to itself, even against attacks the goblin velite is not aware of and those that come from a direction that would not normally count the goblin velite as cover.  The goblin velite does not count as cover for itself, though two goblin velites standing next to each other both do gain this benefit.

A goblin velite must be conscious and able to take actions in order to grant this benefit.  It cannot do so if suffering under effects such as being flat-footed, unconscious, dead, paralyzed, or stunned.

Citadel (Ex) As a move action, 4 times per day, a goblin velite can grant an adjacent ally temporary hit points.  The ally gains 1d8+2 temporary hit points.  The goblin velite must remain conscious, able to move, and adjacent to the ally or the temporary hit points end.

Spear Brace (Ex) A goblin velite can brace a javelin on an equipped shield, to aid in handling and fighting with it.  This increased stability gives the goblin velite a +1 bonus to attack rolls made with a javelin.  He gains this bonus only while he has a shield equipped. 

Additionally, even when the goblin velite is using a shield that prevents its hand from being free, it can use its shield-arm to hold and fight with a javelin.

Quick Strap (Ex) A goblin velite can strap on a shield as a swift action.

Barghest Pelt (Ex) A goblin velite gains +2 natural armor while wearing a barghest pelt.  This occupies the goblin velite’s shoulders slot as if it were a magical item, but does not function for creatures other than goblin velites.  A typical barghest pelt has 10 HP and 2 hardness.

Ranged Trip (Ex) As a full-round action, a goblin velite can attempt to perform a trip combat maneuver with any ranged weapon at a –2 penalty.  It adds its Dexterity modifier to its CMB in place of its Strength modifier and applies range penalties to its combat maneuver check, doubling the penalties from range increments.  If its target is more than 30 feet away, it takes an additional –2 penalty.  If the trip attempt is successful, the target also takes damage as if the goblin velite had made a successful attack with that weapon.  The goblin velite can’t be knocked prone by failing the trip attempt.

Hard Head, Big Teeth (Ex) Goblins with this trait gain a bite attack as a primary natural attack that deals 1d4 points of damage.

I'm thinking about how Javert and Eponine are character foils again-- and how at the barricades they both have a moment where they say “I’m going to die but I am happy, because I'm taking you with me."

As Eponine dies of her bullet wound she “happily” talks to Marius about how glad she is that he’ll die too (so they can meet again in death):

“You see, you are lost! Now, no one can get out of the barricade. It was I who led you here, by the way! You are going to die, I count upon that. (.........) Oh! How happy I am! Every one is going to die.”

(...) “But perhaps you will be angry with me for it when we meet again presently?”

And when Javert is about to be executed he laughs, and “happily” jokes about how all the insurgents are going to be killed, and how they’ll meet again in death:

Javert began to laugh with that noiseless laugh which was peculiar to him, and gazing intently at the insurgents, he said to them:

“You are in no better case than I am.”

“All out!” shouted Enjolras.

The insurgents poured out tumultuously, and, as they went, received in the back,—may we be permitted the expression,—this sally of Javert’s:

“We shall meet again shortly!”

“When we meet again presently” vs “we shall meet again shortly....” ;_;

Both of them are bizarrely calm about dying, as if everything is going according to plan. Because.....it is? Eponine came to the barricade to die, Javert surrendered without putting up any resistance and patiently waited for his execution with a smile (and after Valjean refused to execute him he killed himself.)

This all reminds me of the earlier scene where Eponine threatens to send her father to prison even if he kills her for it (a scene where she sounds eerily similar to Inspector “Dog son of a Wolf” Javert)

“I’m not the daughter of a dog, since I’m the daughter of a wolf.

(.............)

What do I care if I’m picked up to-morrow morning on the pavement of the Rue Plumet, killed by the blows of my father’s club, or whether I’m found a year from now in the nets at Saint-Cloud or the Isle of Swans in the midst of rotten old corks and drowned dogs?”

She was forced to pause; she was seized by a dry cough, her breath came from her weak and narrow chest like the death-rattle.

She resumed:—

“I have only to cry out, and people will come, and then slap, bang! There are six of you; I represent the whole world.” 

“I’ll side with the police because I’m desperate for any sense of power over my own life and if I can only get that power by killing myself, then so be it! I’ll destroy myself, but on *my* terms.”

Eponine really is at the same crossroads Javert was at when he was a child? She really does sound like she could be a younger/more vulnerable/more emotional/more desperate version of Javert, who hasn’t yet lost their ability to empathize with other people or their desire to have a “normal” life with “normal” relationships. Compared to Javert, Eponine is still extremely innocent; the cruelest thing she does is attempt to get Marius to die with her, but she’s ultimately still just a traumatized child.

Javert is like a version Eponine who lost (or deliberately destroyed) their identity, their humanity, and their ability to care about other people. Eponine scares away her family by threatening to call in Society and the Law, realizing that she alone is powerless but can use the law as a way to terrorize people into staying in line. She plans to get Marius branded a criminal and shot to death by the gendarmes at the barricades, so they can be together in death.

Both Eponine and Javert want to feel like their lives have meaning. They both have a specific plan for their Beautiful Heroic Perfect Death, but both of those plans fall through. Eponine planned to die at the barricades with Marius, but Marius doesn’t die. Javert planned to be executed and ~die for his cause~ but his executioner saves his life instead.

And anyway yeah. Eponine is like “someone who could’ve gone down the same path as Javert, but isn’t as far gone yet....” and that adds another layer to the way they act the barricades.

Eponine and Javert both say: “I’m dying, but at least I’m taking you with me!” But they mean it differently.

Eponine means “I’m happy that you’re going to die, because it means I won’t have to die alone. I’ll have company.”

While Javert means “I’m happy that you’re going to die, because I want you all to suffer too.”

well, we are 7 hours away from the very first eurovision show of this year, so i might as well make a ranking of semi 1, based on all the footage of rehearsals we’ve seen so far….

i find this semi final to be much stronger than the other one, and a lot harder to rank tbh. whatever happens i’m gonna lose at least some of my faves 💔

17. 🇳🇴 “Give That Wolf a Banana” by Subwoolfer: i’ve already been over so many times that i don’t like this song and the rehearsals haven’t changed that for me, so yeah.

16. 🇨🇭 “Boys Do Cry” by Marius Bear: the song is boring with a message we’ve heard 1000 times before and the staging is cringe i’m sorry but this is not it. plus the melody is…. eerily similar to what a beautiful world.

15. 🇧🇬 “Intention” by Intelligent Music Project: the staging is actually pretty good and definitely elevates the song but the actual song is just too weak to go anywhere for me. doesn’t deserve all the hate it’s gotten from eurofans though.

14. 🇦🇹 “Halo” by LUM!X ft. Pia Maria: the studio cut is good but from what i’ve seen the staging’s not that great and pia maria’s vocals just aren’t what they need to be for a song like this. dance songs like this are always very difficult to do right at esc and i don’t think they’re perfected it enough unfortunately

13. 🇩🇰 “The Show” by REDDI: i do like this song but i tend to forget it when i’m considering the whole line up which is a shame! but once again the staging just hasn’t really elevated it enough for me

12. 🇦🇱 “Sekret” by Ronela Hajati: i’ve been on such a journey with this song; i LOVED it in FiK and it was one of my faves, then she released the revamped version partly in english and the new beat and it slid down a little in my ranking because i preferred the old version, but i still liked it. and then the stage performance… i love ronela so much still and i really hope she qualifies because it seems like she has put so much effort into eurovision, but honestly this performance is not great. i think they got the colour palette wrong and it looks very messy from what we’ve seen. i wish she had just kept the base of the FiK performance and adjusted it slightly for esc but oh well 😭

11. 🇸🇮 “Disko” by LPS: another song i actually really love, but i can’t squeeze it into my top 10 😔 the staging looks good but not amazing - that’s the only reason it’s not qualifying for me

10. 🇲🇩 “Trenulețul” by Zdob și Zdub & Frații Advahov: this is so fun and yes, while i may be disappointed there is no train on stage, i can’t ignore the pure energy this entry has. it’s why it has to be in my top 10.

9. 🇱🇻 “Eat Your Salad” by Citi Zēni: another entry that has this infectious kind of energy - pure good vibes and it’s quirky in an actually organic & funny way (take notes norway).

8. 🇺🇦 “Stefania” by Kalush Orchestra: i really love this song, it’s catchy and incorporates traditional instrumentation which i love, but the staging hasn’t really clicked for me yet. idk it feels a bit messy. but maybe it will come together in the live shows

7. 🇭🇷 “Guilty Pleasure” by Mia Dimšić: i know, i know, this has maybe a 2% chance to qualify, and i am going to be devastated when i lose it this evening, but…. here i am. i love this song, i love mia, i like the staging (controversial opinion?) and i just think this doesn’t get nearly as much love as it deserves.

6. 🇦🇲 “SNAP” by Rosa Linn: this was a bit of a meh song for me before rehearsals, but the staging… wow. one of the best stagings this year for me. she’s an amazing singer too, literally sounds the same as the studio track. the lyrics have grown on me a lot too. girlie will sail to the final.

5. 🇮🇸 “Með hækkandi sól” by Systur: this is so magical, i love the way they’ve choreographed it and the camera shots are amazing. their voices together are so enchanting. i REALLY hope this qualifies, they deserve it!

4. 🇱🇹 “Sentimentai” by Monika Liu: this is the biggest grower for me this year, she is amazing and charismatic on stage, the camera shots are great and i love her costume. just so good.

3. 🇵🇹 “saudade, saudade” by MARO: this song is so beautiful, so from the heart. i love the staging, it’s so intimate, and i love that maro brought along other festival da canção artists with her. they seem to have a really close bond and you can tell from the performance.

2. 🇳🇱 “De diepte” by S10: i’ve loved this since the beginning and i’ve never stopped. her voice is amazing and the instrumentation is haunting but beautiful. the lyrics are exactly the same. you feel the pain she feels. i’m so happy S10 decided to take part in esc this year.

1. 🇬🇷 “Die Together” by Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord: i got goosebumps when i first listened to this song and again whenever i see her perform it since. she is breathtaking, the staging looks beautiful too. i love the acapella beginning and the explosion of noise at the end. my winner this evening

Thoughts on Dark Fortress #2

(This post is under a cut due to spoilers.)

So late with this one! some stuff irl was keeping me really busy and hyper-distracting me lately, but it’s finally over now so I’m back on my bioware bullshit. :D

Overall there were a lot of beautiful or awe-inspiring scenes in this issue, and a lot of great, meaningful / poignant character interactions and moments between characters. It’s pretty impressive actually how much was able to be packed in. I posted some of my favorite panels here. also omg! the action sequences! the big reveal! the ending!! woww

cool scene-setting, panned out shot of Neromenian and behind it, the Dark Fortress, to immediately pull you back into the world and ‘where we left off’. the combination of ruined dead trees, red lights, lightning and fire/smoke is very atmospheric and hints at what’s ahead

“From this... city, if we can call it that” is a sick burn and reminds you that the Qunari are technologically more advanced than most of the rest of Thedas, from their cannons to their aqueducts

more individually distinct Qunari soldiers, sth I again appreciate

! last issue there were big ‘You haven’t seen the last of Tractus!’ vibes, naturally, but I didn’t expect him to escape by stabbing and killing the Qunari using a chair-leg..!!

the last panel on the first page of Karasten is really good. the way it’s colored, the way it’s lit, the light and shadow, the fiery backdrop, cinders floating, the details of his expression.. 👌 it also makes me think to the possible future, to DA4 when mainland Thedas may be continuing to face the entirety of the Antaam

in Vaea’s acrobatics scene on the bridge, I know rationally that she’ll be fine but couldn’t help but worry for her. again I like how they don’t shy away from showcasing Vaea’s specific abilities. also the attention to detail - you’d think some rocks are just some rocks, but it highlights the risk she’s undertaking that if she falls it’s into rough seas which could dash her against the jagged rocks :’S. Vaea, gooooo!

Fenris’ “Enterprising girl” line has big “Clever girl” meme energy :D

my heart can’t take Fran and Autumn leaning over the edge after Vaea in worry ;; or Aaron looking back in concern over his shoulder ;; or Fran’s tender reassurance ;; or Autumn’s Worried expression ;; the care and bonds which have grown between this group of characters ;;

notice Aaron starts drinking when Vaea’s away from them and they’re beginning to grow worried about her safety. the poor man’s nerves and stress levels

Fran touching the vegetation while she’s considering if she could use her magic to open the entrance from the outside is a nice touch

did Marius leap in front of Fenris and Fran there when the entrance opened?? damn, he’s quick. and the three of them look all scary and formidable here ready for combat. notice how the curve of the door and the spikes that go into the ground, and the composition of this panel, make it look like they’re standing in front of an opened dragon’s maw? ‘teeth’, a rumbling ‘roar’.. some nice foreshadowing here.

the reunion panels are so cute. Autumn’s lil tum as she jumps and Fran and Fenris’ lil smiles of relief and at Autumn’s reaction to seeing Vaea, then a rare happy beam from Aaron.. feel.. the love ;__;

red lighting in the tunnel sets a dangerous, dramatic build-up mood

👀 more info on Fenris’ past, on the specifics of the process which gave him his markings. in the panel where he says that it took a long time, his shadow on the wall behind him reminds me of the shadow of his past that has dogged him for so long :(

Autumn is such an intrepid little explorer and alert scout, tail and ears up, head forward. good girl!

“I just... worry about you, my girl”  ‧º·(˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )‧º·˚  I’ll be so sad if these are death flags for Aaron and he doesn’t make it out of here. also note Fran in this panel, who recently had to kill her own father and is still dealing with that, watching the strongly paternal moment between Aaron and Vaea :(

love Vaea’s faith in Aaron and her sense of humor. also I don’t know why, maybe it’s because Vaea met Sebastian, but her “Maker, no!”, although in a completely different and light-hearted context, reminds me of Sebastian’s “Maker nooo!” at the end of DA2 hh

the reference again to Hawke, who Fenris saw haunted by what they tried to do - save their mother - and couldn’t :’(. also with the shadow in this panel, here’s another person struggling with the shadow of his past qq. this is later emphasized again in Aaron when he continues to talk about his past and in the panel is a chain and manacle. smart visual metaphors, a must in the comic medium with limited space

“It isn’t about what I’ve done. It isn’t about my failures. Or my choices. It’s about their impact” - he’s misty-eyed here as he thinks back to Ostagar.. does this line btw seem almost meta to anyone else btw? :D it feels like a meta reference to the experience of DA players and PCs, who are always having to deal with the impacts of their choices

I wanna point out that I was right on reading issue #1, when I said “I’m positive that in panel 2 here, it’s the exact moment when he sees Cailan die” ;;

So Aaron is also a veteran of the Battle of Denerim

reference to the Hero of Ferelden - “Those were someone else’s battles”. I’m being captain obvious here but I can’t help but [heart pitter-patter] at any and all references to the HoF

I like the.. parallel? is that the word? Aaron’s stories were him trying to inspire people to make a change, or him trying to convince himself of that. and now here’s Vaea, inspiring Aaron with her words in these panels. the little guys can make a difference! in the world of Thedas, you don’t need to be a big bombastic hero or a Player Character to have an impact 

lmao Fenris right on cue. the moments of humor/light-heartedness are nice because they break up the tension and are sprinkled throughout without derailing build-up or taking away from dramatic story impact. yknow?

👀 lore-drop! so ancient elven arcane warriors used lyrium-infused swords. this seems to confirm the sarcophagus is an ancient elven artifact, no? makes sense, wasn’t it said that the sarcophagus’ design was based on the architecture/outfit-design type elements of a specific faction, and that this was done intentionally? it looks kinda ancient elfy in make, right? also about the lyrium-infused swords of the arcane warriors, well well well.. remember that the Evanuris and the ancient elves mined the bodies of Titans for lyrium, for power and to use as a resource. here’s an example of that use

as I read through this portion I became increasingly concerned for my boy Shirallas.. we really are in it now aren’t we 😭

lore-wise what are the implications here? when Fenris’ ritual was being undertaken, the sword and the sarcophagus were bombarded with magic, fire spells. in this one they aim to have the dragon bombard it with fire-breathing. is it just fire that makes it work/powers it, or is there magic in dragonfire, in dragons? it reminds me of “Your heart beats with the old blood, as well. Where do you think it comes from? It sings of a time when dragons ruled the skies. A time before the Veil, before the mysteries were forgotten. Can you hear it?”

and separate to the above, some speculation based on the cover of Issue 3: the piece of metal looks like a broken collar coming off Shirallas, like the one there was on the cover of Issue 2 coming off the dragon. also he’s all bulky now with draconic talons/claws (reminds me of in-world legends of Reavers who dug too deep of their own power after drinking dragon blood and whose bodies consequently began to manifest subtle reptilian traits actually). I’ll be interested to see what results of this allusion between Shirallas and the dragon!!

The sun streamed down on Demie's bare shoulders as he hiked out of the woods and into the clearing. The clearing was fragrant with clover blossoms and wild grass, and as soon as the goats saw it, they charged ahead and began to forage. One of the bucks broke off from the group and tried to head towards the woods on the other side of the clearing, and Demie had to whistle at it and guide it back to the group with his walking stick. 

When he was content with the way the goats had spread out, with none going too far from the small herd, Demie flopped down in the grass and began picking at clover, tying stems together in a chain. His favorite nanny goat, a brown girl named Athena with a speckled coat and floppy ears, trotted over to him and stuck her head under his arm. He ruffled the fur between her horns and tied the chain of clover around her neck. 

He reached in the backpack he'd brought with him for his Polaroid camera, but Athena had already attacked the clover necklace and was munching away at it by the time he lifted his head again. He laughed, reaching out and smooshing her ears until she pulled away and shook her head, prancing off to feed with the other girls. 

Demie laid back on the ground, staring up at the bright, cloudless sky. He laid there for a while, enjoying the sound of the wind rushing through the grass and birds singing in the trees. He wondered how his ancestors must have felt like, centuries upon centuries ago, tending flocks of goats on the islands of Greece. 

It must have been nice, he decided, to live openly among humans, in a time when Gods still roamed the earth. He wondered if any Gods were still around, toying with mortals and divulging arcane secrets to them. Sometimes he wondered if celebrities weren't Gods, or at least demi-gods. They certainly were worshipped like them, forming cults of personality around themselves and living in Hollywood, which might as well be Mount Olympus. 

He tried to think about which musicians may have come from which Gods. Michael Jackson seemed like a son of Apollo - a musical genius who burned bright and was extinguished just as forcefully. He didn't know a lot about Kanye West, but what he'd heard made him feel like Kanye would definitely be a child of Zeus. He just had that God complex and ego. Johnny Cash felt like a son of Hades - his brand of melancholic country blues just felt like something that could only have come from Tartarus. Madonna was definitely a daughter of Aphrodite. 

Of course, if celebrities were children of Gods, where would his brother fit into all that? As satyrs, he and Marius were of course descendants of Pan. But they were part of the cult of Dionysus, at least what cult there was in rural West Virginia. 

Somehow, though, despite the fact that he and his brother were living, breathing nature spirits, he couldn't really think of either of them being directly linked to any Gods. They were too far removed from their ancestors, dragged forward into a modern age that they couldn't really live in. Not without denying who they were and pretending that it was all costuming, at least. 

And to the people that suspected them of being something other than human, they weren't treated as mystical beings from a bygone era. They were treated as campfire stories of monstrous Goat Men that lurked around in the woods, laying curses on people. Half the time, their origins were credited as being Native American, something that Demie took particular umbrage with. 

Demie lost track of time laying in the grass and thinking. Not that time really mattered anything. He didn't wear a watch and he couldn't hold a job - not with his legs and horns marking him so obviously as inhuman - so he lived his life mostly free from the grueling slavery of clocks and schedules. But he did pay attention to the sun, which was starting to dip into the west. 

He climbed back to his feet, shouldering his backpack and picking up his walking stick. He beat it against the grass, guiding his goats back into a cohesive unit and then urging them back into the woods. They followed a well-worn path back to the trailer, where he herded them into their pen, giving each one a hearty pat on the back or rump as they went inside the fence. 

Inside the trailer, the phone was ringing, and he made his way up onto the deck when he could hear something moving out in the woods. He paused, listening carefully, his ears perked up and rotating from side to side. 

Whatever it was out there sounded big. Bigger than a wolf, which he was glad for. He'd had wolves try and attack his goats before, and he kept talking about getting a guard dog, but it just never happened. 

Big was good - it probably meant a deer or elk, which he had no problems with. He saw them as kindred spirits, almost. He felt a connection with almost any ungulate, except for horses. Fuck horses. 

He had put his hand on the doorknob, content with his assumption that it was a deer, when he heard more noise from out in the woods. He knew immediately that it wasn't a deer or elk. It was too clumsy, and there was too much of it. He strained his ears, listening carefully, and he could make out voices. 

They didn't sound like hunters, nor did they move like them. They were practically crashing through the underbrush, breaking sticks with every step and then trying to shush one another. They were definitely humans, and humans that had no idea how to navigate in the woods. 

Demie frowned, opening the door and reaching inside. Propped right inside the door was a gun rack, and he picked up one of the three shotguns resting on it. He grabbed a few rounds from the ammo box perched on top of the rack, then stepped back out onto the deck. 

He listened carefully as he cracked the shotgun over his arm and loaded it. The voices were getting closer, and they had a particular cadence to them that he recognized. It was a showman's cadence, the voices of people recording something. 

He nestled the butt of the gun against his shoulder, raised the barrel towards the skyline, and fired a shot. 

A flock of birds took off from a nearby tree, and then the woods got painfully silent, like everything in them was holding its collective breath. 

He waited a few seconds, and then fired another round. 

The woods erupted with noise again, as the voices began screaming and crashing through the undergrowth. Demie cracked the shotgun over his arm again, ready to load another round, but the voices were heading away from him, growing fainter and fainter. 

He went back inside the trailer, but instead of sitting on the couch or heading to the kitchen, he took a seat in an armchair pointed towards the door and settled down, shotgun resting on his knee. He stayed like that until it got dark and he saw Elaine's van pull up into the driveway.

I have been threatening this for some time, and here it is. Another Shoujo Cosette special...

Imagine...

You’re not a furry. That’s what you’d tell anyone who’d listen, most emphatically. Furries are just weird. What kind of person would be attracted to a six-foot neon green wolf? Definitely not you.

All that said, though, you’re beginning to worry about your attachment to a certain someone. And he may not be a neon green wolf, but he’s still ... on the fuzzier side.

It doesn’t help that Chou Chou is equally obsessed with you. At every chance he gets, he’s at your side. Gavroche has been complaining at the loss of his friend, and you do kind of feel for him a bit – at least until Chou Chou comes bounding up, and then you know you could never relinquish his company.

None of your human boyfriends have really got you. Sure, they were okay – Marius really tried to be understanding, Claquesous was attentive and Theodule indulged your My Little Pony obsession – but with none of them could you be truly yourself.

Chou Chou is completely different. With him, you feel completely at ease. He’s gentle, yet firm where he needs to be – and thanks to his psychic abilities, he always knows when you need cheering up. He’s also the best-looking dog in France, a title you’d fight to defend.

It’s hard, though, keeping the secret from your friends. Eventually, you meet for coffee with Madame Thenardier, knowing if you can tell anyone, it’s her. She’s always been a comforting presence and, if there’s anyone who won’t judge you over some weird shit, it’s her.

‘I don’t know how to explain it,’ you say, holding your triple shot fudge macchiato between your hands.  ‘It’s not like, regular love for a pet. It’s something deeper.’

Madame T nods sagely. ‘Thank you for coming to me about this. I’m honoured you trust me.’

‘You’ve always been there for me,’ you say with a shrug. It’s true. Ever since the two of you met, she’s always favoured you over her actual children. Eponine and Azelma were out on the street with Gavroche, but Madame T always had space for you at dinner.

‘Sometimes love is a funny one,’ she continues. ‘I mean, I once had a fling with a guy who was into some weird animal shit. You know, he went on to become a police inspector.’

You pause. On the one hand, you really want to hear that story, but on the other, it will take away from the matter at hand.

‘How do I tell everyone? That I’m dating a dog?’

She sighs. ‘Gently. They may not understand it at first. But they will learn to accept it.’

‘They will need to accept it quickly.’ You lay a hand on your stomach.

Her eyes widen. ‘You’re not...’

‘This is why I had to talk to you,’ you say. ‘See, I’m expecting...puppies.’

How often do you write?

Phew... that’s hard to answer. Sometimes I go for weeks without writing anything, sometimes I write almost daily. It really depends on mood, time and current ideas...

Do you have a routine for writing?

Hmmm... yes. It’s called working on 27 things at once and not finishing anything. 

What’s your favorite kinks/tropes/pairing?

Kinks: hm... I barely write sex scenes tbh, but... soft bdsm I guess? 

Tropes: Making someone suffer and recover, I guess? :-D And I’m a slut for fantasy settings.

Pairing: Everything with Nuri. 

Do you have a favorite fic of yours?

That’s so hard to tell.... I love most of my babys? I’ve spent so much time with almost every single one  ( @schnaf  could tell you...). If I have to give an example, I really like my current wip. It’s a hella dark omegaverse story placed in a dystopian modern world. Or the Marius Wolf x UltraOC I’m also working on. Mostly fluffy stuff and I’m having so much fun with them.

Les Misérables at the Cadillac Palace Theater (October 17)

I saw Les Mis live for the first time ever, last night and boy oh BOY do I have a lot of thoughts!

Act I

Very dark, except when it was bright on a specific person for emotional impact

THAT TRIANGLE OF THE SHIP with the rowers and then Javert standing and looking over all of them!

Specific light on each person singing their bit “I know she’ll wait, I know that she’ll be true” etc.

So many beautiful little moments as Valjean is on parole! A little girl falls down and he tries to help her, but her parents whisk her away :(

A perfect Bishop Myriel, and the literal mob that brings Valjean back with torches, and then he sends Baptistine in to get the candlesticks, so good!

The stormclouds during Valjean’s Soliloquy, the light, the way he turns away and then back, and his very real struggle

I like this Fantine a LOT, especially how quiet and despairing “I Dreamed A Dream” starts out, ah!

So DARK, ugh, is this necessary

Love the courtroom in Arras, love the confrontation!

Valjean is so gentle with Fantine and then later so playful with Cosette, good dad, A+

Thenardiers were an appropriate level of silly, but also had that dark underbelly of humanity side to them

Moving buildings! Gavroche is such a presence from the start. Also, he was absolutely teeny

Enjolras looks like a young god, and has a strong voice to match

Marius had the perfect curly black hair, and a fitting air of melancholy

The Robbery is much better onstage than the soundtrack or movie made it

at the end of the robbery when Javert's like "clear this garbage off the street," Gavroche chases the people off too and says like "you heard the man, get out of here, we don't have all day" and meanwhile the buildings are rolling off, so it's just him and Javert looking at each other, and Gavroche smiles and slooooowly raises his hand in a salute

STARS! The way there’s more of them little by little and they get brighter, and the light on him gets brighter by the end. At one point he kneels down (and this Javert played it like he honestly believed he was praying and faithful in the name of the Law), and the shadow hit the posts of the bridge in a very cool way. Very good. (And Gavroche, watching, because of course he is)

This Eponine is amazing and powerful and has good chemistry with Marius, poor baby.

The Amis have a good group dynamic but I can’t tell them apart — I did figure out who Courfeyrac and Combeferre are by the end of the play

Gavroche screaming to get their attention to tell them Lamarque is dead, and then absolute silence and he gets a little nervous, but says it anyway!!

When Enjolras says “they will come when we call!” most of the Amis are in a group around him, and Grantaire stands close by, almost a part of them, but removed, still. Marius is even further back, torn but turning towards the doorway (and Cosette). Grantaire grabs Gavroche before “Do You Hear The People Sing” starts, but the kid is still devoted to the cause, despite his efforts

This was honestly the first time I’ve truly understood and liked “In My Life” which just goes to show how good this Cosette is

MARIUS is such a DORK when he meets Cosette! There’s a part where his voice goes really high, a part where he’s still knocking on the door but she’s already snuck outside and is behind him, and he did the “I don’t know what to say” just perfectly and adorably.

EPONINE, daughter of a wolf, what a good moment, and you truly believe she will do anything to defend this house against her father!

Then when Valjean comes out to see what’s going on, Marius is still trying to talk to Cosette, and Eponine has to shove him behind a pillar so he won’t be seen. It was a short moment but very nicely done

During One Day More, everyone had their own pools of different colored light, and it was very cool

THE RED FLAG CATCHING THE LIGHT AS THEY WAVE IT!!!!

Act II

Valjean and Cosette leaving Rue Plumet and Eponine meeting Valjean

The Barricade comes back into place behind her as she finishes “On My Own,” and she just starts handing off chairs as if she belongs there

Javert fought back a little after he was caught but at least he didn’t punch anyone

So DARK and everyone blended into the background, bleh!

Good “Little Fall of Rain” Eponine had very convincing death rattles, and everyone in the background, close enough for solidarity, but not intruding. GRANTAIRE pulling Gavroche away so he doesn’t need to look, sad babies!

There was a bit after Little Fall, where Marius and one other person have their guns at the ready, and Enjolras just touches his arm and says "Marius. Get some rest." A quiet and good moment.

During Grantaire’s part of “Drink With Me,” everyone grabs him to get him to shut up, but Enjolras just walks slowly down to his level, grabs the bottle and stares at him until he retreats to his wall, and Gavroche comforts him but he slowly sinks down to the floor

THE LIGHTING when Gavroche dies — he's singing the Little People song, and then you hear the shot, and everything freezes, and then he sings the next verse faster, like he's trying to get away, and THEN he climbs over the top and raises the cartridge box over his head victoriously, and then there's two streams of light in an X just as he's shot and falls into Enjolras' arms

The moment with the wagon at the end of the shooting, and Javert makes a cross over Gavroche, but still has him tossed in with the rest, unceremoniously. As it should be

DOG EAT DOG was perfect. He’s truly evil and horrible, and glories in it!

The projections as Valjean carries Marius through the sewers could have been corny and lame, but it worked!

JAVERT’S SUICIDE

I REALLY liked how he did this one

when he's first singing, he almost sounds like he's about to CRY because his world's been upturned, not because he's sad

and then it's like a rubberband stretching and he flips to being completely unhinged, and it was gorgeous in a horrible kind of way

and he's pacing across the stage trying to convince someone who isn't there that he knows what he's talking about, needing to justify *any* decision

At “the world I have known is lost in shadow” (maybe) there was a percussion bit that sounded like marimba or something just swelling underneath his existential crisis

People make fun of the effect where the bridge flies up to look like he’s falling down, but they SHOULDN’T because it was AWESOME and sad, especially as the darkness swallows him up and we’re left with the haunting reprise of Stars

The candles used in “Turning” are later picked up by the Amis as Marius sings “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” and then they blow out the candles all at once. Marius hit a perfect combination of sad and angry and lost, and then Enjolras is the last one to leave, and they share this look, both so sorry for what’s happened, but not quite hopeless, and they hold their candles out to each other. Finally Marius blows out his candle and raises it up as the darkness grows around him.

Valjean’s Confession was really good, and Marius trying so hard to understand and help and make things better

The Wedding was unremarkable (and one of the brightest things in this production, but still SO dark, whyyy?) but the Thenardiers were an appropriate level of ridiculous, and I adored Mme. Thenardier’s purple dress with the lace and the FEATHERS.

I cried my eyes out at the Epilogue, which I often find a little boring, but in this case the dim light REALLY worked to get across Valjean’s despair and isolation. And then Fantine and Cosette’s white dresses really shone out to bring light back into his world.

“To love another person is to see the face of God” literally gave me chills, and then “Do You Hear The People Sing” was SO GOOD
