Rogues in paradise is taking a break while I rest up in quarantine trying to figure out the rules- have to abide federal quarantine rule while in Nova Scotia. I am taking time out to walk on the wild side in the garden- it’s 4 acres on the sea - this is a tiny slice of the back yard. The front opens to a spectacular view of St. Margaret’s bay with a path winding down through a wilderness ridge being planted with rhododendron, azalea, wild berries and shrubs- the blackberries are delicious. #boutilierspoint #maritimegarden #wilderness #wildberries #rhododendron #azalia #maritimeshrubs #mountainash #blackberrie @roguesinparadise (at Boutiliers Point, Nova Scotia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ0u6i0ji20/?utm_medium=tumblr

I win, birds. I win! This year it looks like we’re going to have a nice crop of strawberries...if we can keep the birds out of them. This netting should help!! #gardening #strawberries #growyourown #netting #pnw #maritimegardening #nevergiveup #homesteadlife #homesteadersofinstagram #mistymeadowshomestead https://www.instagram.com/p/CBe_YoBACa4/?igshid=kebfhgw060sd

We did it! 10 Roma tomato plants (a couple had two in the pot that we just left), 12 Beefsteak tomato plants and 2 Cherokee Purple tomato plants. It’s recommended that you plant 15 plants for a family. We’ve exceeded that. 🍅 we have a few more tomatoes for sale or trade if you are interested. If you absolutely can’t afford them, let me know. 🍅 #Tomatoes #CherokeePurple #BeefSteak #Roma #PasteTomatoes #RedPlasticMulch #ThisBetterWork #PacificNorthwest #MaritimeGardening #FromSeedToTable https://www.instagram.com/p/CBPJx4TgGU8/?igshid=16oo3kmbm6y3f

Trying hard to take advantage of these sunny days, but it’s kicking our butt. One step at a time, right? Otherwise it’s too easy to give up. I worked our Potager Garden, which is essentially a French “Kitchen” garden. Ooo la la!! This garden is close to the house (around the deck) and contain items I can gather quickly for meal. Today, I planted: sugar snap peas, radish, three different sweet peppers (Jupiter/green bell, yellow bell, & poblano), tarragon, oregano, cilantro, and three types of basil. Oh! And seeded some marigold. The mister started working the Pond Garden. The soil in the greenhouse garden area hasn’t been conducive to in-ground gardening, so we have moved in-ground garden to an area by the pond where the soil seems better. Today he worked on the trellises for the tomatoes. We have not had much success with tomatoes in the past. If we got a good crop, they never seem to ripen, so we going to be trying something new - red mulch film. According to researchers at Cornell and Clemson universities, when tomatoes are grown on red mulch they have higher yields, stronger stems and ripen earlier. The mister says it’s a good 10-15° warmer in the area where he put down the red mulch. We are also trellising in such a way we can hoop them and create a kind of greenhouse effect to keep them warmer, especially since next week is supposed to be cold and rainy…again. We are done for the day. The goal for tomorrow is to plant the tomatoes. #gardening #tomatoes #growyourown #fromseedtotable #pnw #maritimegardening #potagergarden #rheumatoidarthritis #rheumatoidarthritiswarrior #breastcancersurvivor #nevergiveup #homesteadlife #homesteadersofinstagram #mistymeadowshomestead https://www.instagram.com/p/CBCuZMqgBOe/?igshid=1k1iizfbwhkp4

We love in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 8a. Anyone else? Our last frost date is May 1-15, and since we had some snow in April, I actually shot for May 20th. The first week of June we still had a few mornings with ice on our windshields, which our nightshade plants (tomatoes & peppers) was DID NOT appreciate and hopefully recover from the frost bite they received. Brassicas (cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli...) as you can see, LOVED it. #GrowYourOwn #PNWGardener #Cabbage #Zone8a #MaritimeGarden #Brassicas #Garden #ColeCrops #CoolWeatherCrops

Last night, we soaked some seeds prior to planting them today. I read several articles that encouraged adding a few drops of peroxide to the water which supposedly prevents bacteria and adds needed oxygen. I waited until this morning try it and let it sit for a few hours before planting. Has anyone else tried this? #AlwaysLearning #Gardening #Gardener #PNWGardener #MaritimeGardener #ProckSide #SeedStarting #GrowYourOwn
