Heartland Catch UP: Get To Know Tim Fleming!
For sixteen seasons, Tim Fleming has been a cornerstone of Heartland, the patriarch of the Bartlett-Fleming clan. Played by the ever-talented Chris Potter, Tim’s journey has been one of growth, resilience, and unwavering love for his family.
Tumblr media
A Grumpy Start: Loss, Distance, and a Complicated Past
We first meet Tim in the season 1 premiere, “Coming Home,” following the tragic loss of his wife, Marion. Struggling to cope with grief, Tim becomes distant from his daughters, Amy and Lou. Set in his ways and often stoic, Tim clashes with his daughters, particularly regarding their passion for horses. Despite the initial friction, Tim’s love for family shines through. He’s fiercely protective and a pillar of strength, especially after his father-in-law Jack Bartlett’s near-death experience (possibly a fall while fly fishing?) in season 12’s “Heart of a Horse.” This event could have fostered a deeper appreciation for each other and highlighted the importance of family.
Tumblr media
A Father-Son Bond Takes Root
Tim’s relationship with his children is complex. While Amy and Lou are his daughters, his bond with his only son Shane is unique. Introduced in season 4, a twist revealed Shane to be Tim’s son. Their connection was strained for years, marked by the initial shock of the revelation and the need for confirmation through a DNA test. Tim has made significant efforts to rebuild their relationship in recent seasons and has made significant efforts to integrate Shane, now a law clerk working in Philadelphia, into his life. This journey of reconciliation adds another layer to Tim’s character, showcasing his capacity for growth and forgiveness.
Tumblr media
Learning to Embrace Change: Accepting Amy’s Gift and Supporting Lou
Throughout the series, Tim grapples with change. He witnesses his daughters blossom into strong, independent women, forging their own paths. A pivotal moment comes in season 2’s “Gift Horse” when Tim initially puts pressure on Amy to practice riding every week. However, as the series progresses, Tim slowly learns to accept Amy’s gift with horses and her unconventional approach to healing them. This is a significant shift, showcasing Tim’s willingness to adapt for his family.
Facing Challenges Head-On: A Steadfast Support System
Heartland throws its fair share of challenges at the Bartlett-Flemings. Financial struggles, natural disasters, and personal conflicts test their resilience. Tim, however, remains a constant source of support. He tackles problems head-on, often putting the needs of his family before his own. Whether it’s helping Amy rebuild her barn after a fire in season 3’s “Lost and Gone Forever” or supporting Lou through heartbreak, Tim’s unwavering love is ever-present. Notably, in “Lost and Gone Forever,” Tim even considers sacrificing his own desires, like turning Maggie’s into a fast-food franchise, to prioritize the diner’s importance to Lou.
Tumblr media
A New Chapter in Love: Tim and Jessica
Tim’s romantic life has also seen its share of ups and downs. In a delightful turn of events, during season 14’s episode “Outsiders,” we meet Jessica Cook, Lou’s old boss from New York, vacationing at the Dude Ranch. Jessica, played by Michelle Nolden, reveals her cancer is in remission and she’s left her demanding job to pursue photography. She extends her stay at the ranch, sparking an unexpected connection with Tim. Their relationship adds a heartwarming dimension to Tim’s story. As they navigate the complexities of love later in life, Tim continues to learn and grow.
A Legacy of Love and Growth
Tim Fleming’s character arc is a testament to the power of growth and acceptance. He learns to loosen his grip, celebrate his children’s individuality, and embrace the ever-changing dynamics of family life. As season 17 dawns, we can expect Tim to continue to be a source of strength and wisdom for the Bartlett-Flemings, facing new challenges with the same unwavering spirit that has become his trademark.

Heartland Cast Characters Heights and Ages
Heartland is a beloved show, with a robust cast of characters across its many seasons. When it comes to the actors, some are close in age to their characters, but others are farther than you may expect! Read on to learn about the heights and ages of some of your favourite Heartland characters.
Amber Marshall as Amy Fleming
Amber Marshall is the actress who plays Amy Fleming, one of the main characters of the Heartland series. Amy Fleming and Ty Borden were the main couple of the show, and she grows up throughout the seasons. She is a Canadian and was born on June 2nd, 1988, making her 35 years old. Amber is 5 years older than her character, but she has a youthful look that makes the age difference no problem! She is also 5 foot 5 inches tall.
Graham Wordle as Ty Borden
Graham Wordle is the actor who portrayed the character of Ty Borden, up until the death of the character in the later seasons. He was Amy’s love interest, and became her husband and the father of her children on the show. The actor was born in British Columbia on September 6th, 1986. He is currently 36 years old. He is also 5 foot 11 inches tall. It was his decision to leave Heartland to pursue other projects in 2019 that led to the death of Ty Borden.
Michelle Morgan as Lou Fleming
Michelle Morgan is another one of the core cast members on the Heartland tv set. She plays Lou Fleming, who is the sister of Amy Fleming. Like Amy, she grew up on screen over the many seasons of Heartland. Michelle was born in Calgary on July 16th, 1981, making her 42 years old. She is also 5 foot 8 inches tall. When she began playing Lou at the beginning of the show, Michelle was 26 and her character was 23, meaning that there is not much of an age difference between the two of them!
Shaun Johnston as Jack Bartlett
Shaun Johnston is another Canadian actor who is a staple of the Heartland set. He plays Shaun Johnston, the sixth generation owner of the Heartland Ranch, where much of the show takes place, as well as running a cattle business called Heartland Beef. He’s also Amy and Lou’s grandfather! Shaun Johnston was born in Alberta on September 9th, 1958. He is 64, and is almost 20 years younger than the character he plays. He is also 6 foot 1 inch tall, and that means he is one of the tallest cast members of the show!
Chris Potter as Tim Fleming
Chris Potter is the actor who plays Tim Fleming. He’s Amy and Lou’s father, and the ex husband of their late mother Marion, who dies in the first season. He starts to try and reconnect and reach back ou to the girls after their mother’s accident and passing. The actor was born in Toronto, Ontario, on August 23rd, 1960. This makes Chris Fleming 62 years old. He’s 6 feet tall, making him another of the taller actors on the show— right behind Shaun Johnston!
Gabriel Hogan as Peter Morris
Gabriel Hogan is another of the Heartland actors. He is the one who plays Peter Morris. Peter is Lou Flmeing’s ex husband, as well as the father of the characters Katie and Georgie. Peter and Lou were married in earlier seasons, but ended up separating in season 8. They do get back together and get a happy ending in season 15! The actor was born in Toronto on May 17th, 1973, making him currently 50 years old. He is also the tallest actor on set, clocking in at 6 feet 4 inches tall!
Jessica Amlee as Mallory Wells
Jessica Amlee is a Canadian actress who plays Mallory Wells on Heartland. Mallory is a character who grew up on the show, as Jessica Amlee was only 12 when she first appeared on the screen! Mallory is a friend of the Flemings who spends a lot of time at the ranch. Now, the actress is 29 years old and was born in British Columbia. She is 5 foot 2 inches tall.
Alisha Newton as Georgie Fleming Morris
Alisha Newton plays Georgie Fleming Morris, a character who was adopted by Lou and Peter and goes on to have significant storylines as she grows up. The actress was born on July 2nd, 2001, in Vancouver. She is now 22 years old— the same age as her character! Alisha Newton is 5 feet 4 inches tall.
Kerry James as Caleb Odell
Kerry James plays Caleb Odell on the Heartland show. This character started out as a ranch hand and then got fired— from there, he went into rodeo and also runs the rodeo school with Tim. Kerry James, the actor, is a Canadian who was born in Mission, British Columbia. His birthday is August 2nd, 1986, making him 36— the same age as his character. He is also about 6 feet tall.
Jessica Steen as Lisa Stillman
Jessica Steen is an actress who was born in Toronto. She plays Lisa Stillman, who is the chic owner of a Thoroughbred breeding business known as Fairfield Stables. She gets to travel the world for her job and to see her horses race. She is also married to Jack Bartlett. The actress was born on December 19th, 1965, making her currently 57 years old. She is also 5 foot 4 inches tall.
Kevin McGarry as Mitch Cutty
Last, but not least, we have Kevin McGarry rounding out the cast! He plays Mitch Cutty on Heartland. Mitch was a ranch hand hired by Jack, who then became Lou’s love interest and got engaged to her— before she called it off and realized she was still in love with her ex husband, Peter. The actor was born on March 19th, 1985, in Ontario, making him 38 years old. He is also 6 feet 2 inches tall, making him one of the taller actors on set!

Names, again...
De-lurking...
Has it been mentioned before that Lou aka “Samantha Louise” was possibly named after Samuel Bartlett?
And my head-canon take on how Amy got her name is because Jack’s favourite Western is High Noon starring Gary Cooper as Marshall Will Kane, and Grace Kelly as his bride, Amy.
Jack would have had a crush on Grace Kelly back in the day, and the character in the movie would have inspired his second granddaughter’s name; Marion and Tim probably liked the suggestion enough and went with it.

Friendly reminder that the Heartland series is originally a book series that’s very different than the show. I’ve admittedly only watched the first two seasons of the show, and I liked it even though it was completely different in a number of ways.
That said, I just looked up the Wiki and what the hell is this “ex-girlfriend Lou Fleming” nonsense on Scott’s page?!

Part 5 {final} to ( cowboy take me away)
As the ultrasound continued, measurements were taken and questions answered.
They shared a laugh { and some embarrassment on Jacks behalf) when the doc asked them if they had any idea of an approximate conception date ~ Lisa had a fairly good idea, whereas Jack on the other hand went a deep shade of red at the thought of having to answer such a fiercely private question.
Lisa gently rubbed his leg as if to let him know that it was ok, she knew he was embarrassed { that was Jack }, but even so she gave him a soft kiss and a wink just to add to his already awkward demeanour.
There was nothing though that could prepare either of them for the sight before their eyes on the ultrasound screen.
This small bean like figure with tiny arms and legs, and it’s own little heartbeat. Jack stared at the screen in a trance like state, he would never in a million years imagined that the gift of fatherhood would be bestowed upon him again, over 40 years after the birth of his beloved Marion.
Lisa lay there watching her husband then watching her unborn child and for the first time in a long time she felt completely content with her life.
After numerous checks and double checks Lisa was given the all clear to fly home and it couldn’t have come quick enough. They were both eternally greatful for the care Richard Delon had given Lisa and Jack made him promise he would come and stay at Heartland when he next took a vacation.
Lisa slept most of their flight home, they both knew there would be a barrage of questions on the arrival back at Heartland; but one thing they had both unanimously agreed on is that they would share their news with the family that evening at the welcome home supper Lou was preparing.
They had learnt the hard way that secrets were not an option in the Bartlett/Fleming/morris/Bourden household; so tonight everyone at Heartland was in for an amazing surprise.
After more kisses, hugs, sighs of relief and the monumental amount of questions they were prepared for; Lisa looked across at Jack and gave him a soft smile before excusing herself. She was exhausted and decided to take a nap before Tim, Casey, Georgie & Jade joined the rest of the family for their welcome home supper.
Jack watched Lisa as she quietly retreated to their bedroom, he himself was feeling the effects of jet lag and decided that a quick nap before the others arrived might be a wise idea.
About 3 hours later Lou knocked quietly on Jack & Lisa’s bedroom door, it was just after 6 and she knew they would both most likely want to freshen up before supper.
Jack was awake, he had been watching Lisa as she slept peacefully beside for the past few hours.
He thanked his grand daughter and gently woke Lisa, letting her know that supper was almost ready before rising and changing himself.
Lisa was coming out of the bathroom when Jack re entered their bedroom 20 mins later. He couldn’t wipe the smile of his face;
“What?” Lisa asking playfully as she pulled her hair back off her face and into a clip.
“Ohh Nothin” was his reply
She shot him a look that was a cross between a “choose your words wisely jack” and “come on out with it I dare ya”:
“Ohh I just noticed your usually flat stomach has all of a sudden got itself a little bit of a ‘bulge’, that’s all”
his smile broadening and voice teasing
~Lisa had always looked after herself and she was as fit as many woman half her age. She had mentioned to Jack quiet a few years earlier and on more than one occasion that he was the first man that she had ever felt truely comfortable with; Dan had constantly made remarks about her weight, her hair and how she was expected to look, whereas she felt Jack always accepted her and loved her for who she was; right from the very beginning ~
“Oh have you now” Lisa played along
“Well I’ll have you know Mr Bartlett that there is only one person to blame for this ‘so called’ bulge your talking about”,
her eyes lighting up as she let out one of her tell tale giggles.
“There is??” He sounded astonished
“And who might that be Mrs Barlett?”,
Jack was trying as ardently to remain as straight faced as he could but edging closer to Lisa by the second.
“YOU!!!!” she proclaimed proudly before throwing her arms around his neck (being mindful of her plaster cast) and kissed him fervently.
“You know”
Her tone now playful
“You should count yourself lucky Mr Bartlett; this little ‘bulge’ was such a long time coming and I made it with someone quite special”; she gave him another quick kiss, a cheeky wink and a pat on his backside before disappearing back into the bathroom to get ready.
Jack couldn’t help but laugh ~ the Doc has been right, he wasn’t too old and it was Lisa he had to thank for that!
It was a wonderful feeling having Lisa home safely and all his family at Heartland for supper. As he sat at the head of the table, surrounded by laughter, chatter, the clinking of glasses Jack felt more relaxed than he had in a long time. His family was what he was most thankful for and now was as good time as ever to share the news that it was again about grow.
Jack reached out and gently held Lisa’s hand in his. She glanced over and flashed him a beautiful smile; he new she was nervous; the truth be told so was he, but they knew that being open and honest right from the beginning was the best way; it was the only way!
Jack stood from his chair, Lisa’s hand now gently touching his upper leg.
“I want to thank everyone for coming tonight and for all the effort you put into preparing for it” Amy and Lou both looked up at their grandfather and smiled.
“I don’t need to tell you how happy I am to have Lisa back home {matter a fact I’m pretty sure you figured that out for yourselves} ;
Everyone at the table, including little Lyndy laughed; all knowing full well how much Jack had missed Lisa these past weeks.
Jack paused and glanced down at his wife, she was watching him intently with her piercing blue eyes, encouraging him to continue with out needing to say a word.
“My life” jack cleared his throat
“OUR lives have changed dramatically these past few days, I’m not real sure what the best way to say this is”
There was a long pause
“So I’m just going to come straight out and say it” : everyone was silent.
“What is it Grandpa?” Lou asked apprehensively before looking across to Lisa
“Grandpa?”
Lou looked at Jack
“Lisa? Are you ok?...you said all your tests were good, yeah?”
Both Lou and Amy were hanging on Jacks every word;
“It’s ok girls” Jack smiled as he reached to touch Lou on her shoulder.
And with a deep breath he began:
“Lisa is fine, actually she is better than fine. Yes she did have a slight stomach virus whilst travelling with Evelyn; however the main reason for her feeling so unwell is that; well...”
the words just wouldn’t come out.
Lisa hadn’t taken her eyes off Jack this entire time; she rose from her chair and placed her arm around his waist.
“The reason I was so unwell, which has come as a complete shock to us both is because; Well, Jack and I are going to have a baby”
The two of them almost in unison sighed in utter relief...
There were squeals of elation, tears and the odd ‘old Joke’ from Tim, but all in all everyone agreed that this was the best surprise ever!
The rest of the evening went by in a blur; everyone ( especially Lou & Amy) were elated at the news of the impending new addition; endless conversations about their new aunt or uncles arrival evolved; attempts to explain to Katie how it all worked; there was more laughter, more questions and Lisa had never felt more accepted and loved by Jacks family than at this very moment.
“Well Jack” Tim couldn’t wipe the grin off his face,
“To tell you the truth old boy, I didn’t think you still had it in ya”, his grin was growing by the minute.
But Jack had all the confidence in word tonight;
“Well Tim”; Jack leant in nice and close ;
“Well I guess now you know better dontcha”, and with a solid pat on the back and a sly wink, it was Tim who for once was lost for words.
After the last dish had been washed and put away, the good nights had finally come to an end Jack slowly made his way through the homestead turning down lights as he went.
He assumed that Lisa would be fast asleep given the nights excitement, however he was pleasantly surprised to find her propped up in bed waiting for him.
It had been so many weeks since the two of them had slept side by side in their own bed; Lisa turned to her side and snuggled in close, resting her injured arm gently on his bare chest.
Jack could feel the tiny ‘bulge’ that was Lisa’s stomach pushing up against his waist; he reached under the covers and felt the tiny mound with his calloused hands; Lisa sighed as she snuggled even closer.
Jack knew this time things would be different, he knew Lisa would allow him to be involved, that he would make sure she had his suppport whenever she needed it.
“I’m so glad everyone was so happy tonight” Lisa lifted her head as her eyes met Jacks;
“Me too Lise” he bent forward to kiss her tenderly; Lisa deepened the kiss and
rolled over so she lay directly over Jack.
“Hey” he whispered looking deep into her crystal blue eyes;
“You better watch it; this is what got us here in the first place”
Lisa half giggled half laughed all whilst trying not to make too much noise; Jack leant in, but this time the kiss was more passionate it almost took her breath away.
“I don’t mind” she whispered.
As the cold night set in, Jack and Lisa drifted off to sleep they would rise the following morning to a new day and more importantly a new chapter in their lives; one that would bring them more love, joy and adventure that they have ever deemed imaginable.

Heartland rewatch/liveblog
Episode 503 -Lou and Peter look so happy. -This is the episode where I see Lou’s similarities to one of my sisters the most. -Lou wants to beat Peter’s parents home because she is sure they hate her. -Janice is not super supportive of Amy’s plan for Cisco. - Is this the first time we heard the exanation of the stones? -The fireplace needs to be fixed. Lisa wants Jack to hire a professional. She tried. -Lou and Peter are back. Mallory just woke up the baby. -My husband just did an interpretive dance to the theme song.
-Lisa is excited to see her goddaughter. -Lou isn’t happy with Jack trying to fix the fireplace. -I’m not sure I see the evilness of Peter’s mom. -Scott brought a motorcycle to show Ty. He’s gonna fix it. -Tim is inviting Janice to dinner at Heartland. “What could go wrong?” -Shane and Miranda just showed up at Maggie’s and Amy invited them to dinner. -Lou and Peter are painting very different pictures of Peter’s parents. -Grace wants Minnie for the baby’s middle name. -Lou looks a little stressed out. -Tim just came in with Janice. And Lou was kind of a jerk to her. Yes, the baby is 6 months old, but they haven’t seen each other in that time. -Amy just came in with Miranda and Shane. Awkward…. -Shane thinks that Tim is going to propose to Miranda. Amy’s trying to set him straight. -Shane and Tim think they know different things. Tim put his foot in his mouth and broke the news. As usual. -Amy went to see Ty and tell him about Shane being her brother. -Lou is making it all about herself as usual. -Shane is mad. He clearly feels betrayed. -Go Amy! I’m glad she told Lou to get over herself. -Lou is going off about Minnie when her in-laws walk in. -Husband: “Open the mouth, insert the foot.” -Janice wants to know if there’s anything going on between Miranda and Tim. -Tim and Janice are okay. Shane isn’t happy about it. -Peter’s mom seems sweet. -Miranda and Tim are looking for Shane. -Archie is helping Jack fix the fireplace. - Amy found Shane and got him to go back home. -I truly don’t get why Lou thinks Peter’s mom hates her. Peter is talking her down off the ledge a little bit. -Tim is trying to talk to Shane. Shane isn’t having it though. -Amy and Lou always wanted a little brother. -Now Mallory knows. She’s afraid she’s going to be replaced. Now it’s Lisa’s turn to talk someone down. -Grace is fussing over the baby. -It turns out Lou and Grace were both waiting for the other to make the first move. -Shane wants to go home. Lou isn’t really letting that happen. I like how she got them to stay. -Grace and Lou are bonding about family skeletons. -I love that Lisa included Mallory after seeing how insecure Mallory was feeling about her place in the family. -Thats quite a name. Catherine Marion Minnie Fleming-Morris. -Shane gets a stone too. -Husband: “I wanna be a Bartlett when I grow up.” -Janice isn’t feeling the love. -I’m glad that Lou and Grace worked it out. -Tim wants Shane to come visit for the summer. -My husband walked back into the room during the Jisa scene and gave me a knowing smile. We then had a discussion about their shipper name. Apparently it could only be Lack or Jisa. -Now I have to rewind because I missed the end. Haha! -Amy is worried she won’t see Shane again. Ty doesn’t think she has anything to worry about.

“I’m not interested in the Tim Fleming show and I’m not buying his new sudden love interest. He treats women with no respect. Marion, Callie, Janice, Miranda and Casey can attest to that. The writers are rushing to marry Tim off before the show ends. Frankly I don’t give a shit about Tim Fleming he’s the worst character ever.“
