Explaining the 2 Luigi's New Mansions + Googi Hypothesis
So in Luigi's Mansion after the Boos are defeated the Mansion disappears because it was a creation of the Boos. From here you can get any number of Rank Mansions for Luigi's new mansion that is built, depending on how well you did in the game. So in Mario Kart Double Dash on Luigi's Circuit we see Luigi's new mansion which is the one from the Rank A ending. Seems to be open and shut right? Well... not really. In Luigi's Mansion 2 Dark Moon we see Luigi in his New Mansion which is the Rank D Mansion? So what's going on here? Well I have a few hypotheses.
The first one is Luigi decided to build 2 Mansions and is living in one primarily. It's plausible but seems like an easy cop-out.
Another hypothesis is Luigi either had a D Rank Mansion and upgraded to a Rank A Mansion placing Double Dash after LM2DM. Or Luigi had a Rank A Mansion and downgraded to a Rank D Mansion. Both are possible but seems a bit complex.
The third hypothesis is the Rank D Mansion is the one from the canon ending, while the Rank A Mansion is a prop created for the Double Dash event. The creation of props and buildings for karting and sports events is not uncommon, and we even see it happen for the original Mansion created by the Boos. We see one in Mario Power Tennis, Mario Super Sluggers, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Mario Kart DS.
Now for the fourth and final hypothesis, and the one I think is what happened. So in the Luigi's Mansion 3DS game and extra bit of plot is added to the game. A future Professor Elvin Gadd sends Gooigi back in time to the events of Luigi's Mansion, to learn from Luigi. So as established in a previous post, time travel alters the past and present. So what I believe happened is the act of sending Gooigi back in time changed the past, and thus what Rank Mansion Luigi gets. This could explain why there is 2 New Mansions, one is from before Gooigi went back in time, the other is from after he went back in time. Side note, I like the attention to detail of E. Gadd still having access to time travel.

I just realized that Ghost Guy from the first Luigi's Mansion Game is combination of a Spear Guy, and a Boo Guy.
I also think Luigi's Mansion 1 was also the first Game where Shy Guys (or rather, Ghost Guys) were voiced by Nate Bihldorff, who's known as the Voice Actor for not just the Shy Guys, but also Fly Guys, and Snifits (I'm like 99% convinced it was Bihldorff, anyway).
Though, according to the Super Mario Wiki, Bihldorff first voiced them in Mario: Power Tennis (at least the Shy Guys, and the Fly Guys; he wouldn't voice Snifits until Paper Mario: Sticker Star).
However, I admit that their info can be subjective at time (and sometimes, inaccurate), but not always.

Your Mario and Luigi art is amazing!! Your style for them is so perfect and unique 🥺
I'm actually curious of if you have any specific inspirations for the way you draw them? Generally I see a big mix of M&L series art but was wondering if there were other inspirations too?
Tons. Tons of Inspiration. Most of them come from the games but others actually are from promotional art, Japanese ads, or I just made it the heck up.
Here's a list of all the places I've pulled form in previous drawings:
Mario & Luigi series (Where I pull the most from, it's the most obvious) Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, Bowser's Inside Story, and Dream Team.
Super Mario 64 DS (Unagi eel encounter and playing 'Picture Poker' mini game with Luigi)
New Super Mario Bros. series (Getting stuck in the bubble and propeller power up flying)
Mario Galaxy 1+2 (Boo Mario and Luigi are very cute. Luigi especially because not only is he more oval shaped compared to his round brother; but he constantly has a worried look from being a ghost)
Super Mario Sunshine
Luigi's Mansion series (The duck floaty is from LM3)
Mario Marker (They're wearing their MM construction outfits but they're eating sandwiches on top of a I-beam like at the end of LM3)
Mario Paint (Mario wears his normal cap sideways with his painter outfit in that game while in Odyssey it's a beret)
Mario Tennis Aces
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Super Mario Odyssey (Many cute outfits from this game, I used 4)
Super Mario 3D World
Mario Kart Tours (Luigi gets 2 outfits from here- 'Painter' and 'Vacation')
Dr. Mario World (Baby Mario gets his doctor costume from here)
Now drawings of the Baby Bros are a special case. Out of the original 18 doodles, 5 of them come from 'Partners in Time' because that's where they're the most prominent as playable characters. But a grand majority of them I just made up, but not without a lot of thought! For example, the doodle of the babies in pajamas makes reference to their animal power ups. Baby M has a racoon plushy and Baby L has a fox plushy; a nod to Tanooki Mario and Kitsune Luigi. But Baby L also has spotted pajamas connecting more to his spotted cat form.
As for commercials, two poses come specifically from a single Japanese only ad where Mario rescues Luigi from Bowser (High-five + Hug Jump). And the white suit movie premiere outfits drawing I did actually comes from a Japan-only Super Mario All-Stars commercial.
So yeah, probably a long-winded answer just to say that all the drawings at the very least have roots somewhere.

Here's the promised longer post I mentioned, on the topic of Mario and Luigi's brotherly relationship, though a significant portion of the post is filtered through the interpretation of Luigi's character over the decades. I touch upon both out-of-universe and in-universe points.
The best place to start is my motivation for writing this post in the first place, which is the annoyance regarding the subset of the fandom who act as if Mario is a cruel character, especially with respect to his brother Luigi. Obligatory, albeit tongue-in-cheek, "Fuck MatPat", due to his video positing Mario as a sociopath. I don't place all the blame at his feet, but he is an easy public target to point at, and I know some people would have been influenced by that video.
In anticipation for the length of the post, I've left the rest under a read more.
The one evidence MatPat mentioned in that video that still sticks with me all these years later was Mario grinding his shoe onto Luigi's foot after the latter wins his trophy in Mario Power Tennis.
However this ignores the context of the other trophy win animations, which are all comedic in nature, as well as the fact that a number of others also feature Luigi getting in some sort of trouble during them.
youtube
Mario Power Tennis initially released in 2004, the middle of the 00s. This time period was a marked shift in how Luigi as a character was used, as he really solidified due to Paper Mario 64 and Luigi's Mansion setting a baseline characterization. Later titles tipped further into the "down on his luck" and "lack of respect" aspects of his character.
But this characterization has started to be tipped back again, not having a bad thing happen to Luigi be the "be all end all" of comedy, likely in part due to the Year of Luigi.
Though overall, it's important to remember that the brothers have spanned 4 decades worth of media. That's quite a bit of time, and quite a lot of experimentation, even as the broadest strokes stayed constant. This brings me back to 1988. 5 years now Luigi would have existed, and the Super Show cartoon wouldn't start airing for another year. But we did get Super Mario Bros 3, and every time you booted it up, you'd get this title sequence.
Would you look at that? Luigi jumping on Mario's head? Throwing a Green Shell at him? What a terrible brother he is! This is sarcasm, but it does demonstrate how this really is one of earliest depiction of interaction between them that I'm aware of. (The other being the Japanese animated movie released in 1986, but that film focused more on Mario as the hero, with Luigi mostly causing trouble when he is on screen. It's a fun watch, but Luigi's character was still up in the air at the time.)
To loop back around to the in-universe discussion, they're siblings, these kinds of things happen, but they generally don't break the relationship. No relationship is always perfectly happy and content. It's fine to have moments where they're jealous, or annoyed, or otherwise not being on the same wavelength. But it doesn't mean they hate each other. To make a personal anecdote, my own sibling can get on my nerves at times and mine on theirs (sometimes even intentionally, haha), but that doesn't mean when push comes to shove, we wouldn't help the other. That's exactly the sort of energy I personally see in the Mario Bros. relationship.
This is also where I discuss the major sub-series, as they all emphasize different aspects of Luigi, which provides a different spin on the relationship (though never to the point where it'd flip to them hating each other).
Paper Mario's Luigi still cares for Mario, but he's also looking to prove himself, which is evident in his diary in 64 (wishing he could go on an adventure), his Marvelous Compass quest in TTYD (saving another kingdom), the intro of Super (attempting to interrupt the wedding in the intro), and his Peach's Castle key search quest in TOK (helping his brother by finding incorrect but still helpful keys). However some of his private dialogue in his diary could be read as more resentful or jealous, as Mario goes on yet another adventure while he stays at home. But, to take an in-universe view, just because Luigi has those feelings at times doesn't mean he always feels like that, and at the end of the diary, he's "looking forward to listening to the story of his adventure" and that he's going to "prepare a dinner to celebrate Mario's return". These writings are private, so they're effectively Luigi unfiltered, without some supposed need to keep up appearances for Mario's sake, yet we can see he's happy to see Mario back at home again.
Mario & Luigi's Luigi in contrast, is far more reluctant to get into trouble, with him intending to see Mario off at the start of Superstar Saga before being grabbed and taken along for the adventure, and generally being a lot more cowardly. Despite this, his love for his brother still shines through, with him forcing himself through bad situations because Mario's at his side, or because his love for his brother outweighs his fear of the situation.
Interaction between the bros doesn't happen as much in the Super Mario titles, but you could argue it being a middle ground between these two prior interpretations. Super Mario Galaxy in particular has Luigi collecting Power Stars by himself and getting in over his head, so he turns to the one person he can always rely upon, his brother. Though he also does decide that he's had enough excitement after a few stars and needing to be rescued.
However, one thing is constant, Mario is a great guy, not some cruel jerk. He cares about everyone, but especially about his brother, and Luigi wouldn't place that level of trust in Mario if he didn't deserve it.

A Warm Headcanon
Mario loves Luigi and of course vice versa. Although sometimes Mario may seem overbearing or let his attitude get the better of him there is ultimately nothing but care in his heart for his brother. He'd move mountains and tread seas for him easily.
One particular issue that comes to mind to contrast this is from eons ago: Mario Power Tennis. When Luigi celebrates his victory Mario feigns a congratulatory gesture but we see him marking up Luigi's kicks out of spite. What's that about? Well, Mario is extremely competitive. He plays for keeps in almost anything he can and that attitude has gotten him far(in most cases) but it also gets him into hot water more often than not.
I bring up this instance specifically however because nearly any other time the bros interact? It's wholesome. Thoughtless teamwork as if they're on the same wavelength, risking their lives for one another, expressing deep concern for one another when they're apart.
Luigi's Mansion 3(can you tell that other post spawned this thought in my mind yet?) shows Luigi crusading through a haunted hotel in order to save everyone doing what he does best: hunting ghosts. Mario is among the last to be saved but when he's freed there is no "playful" putting Luigi down nor is there any posturing like he didn't need his help: Mario just throws himself at him happy that he's safe and proud of his little brother for standing up to this threat. Then, he guides Luigi along allowing him to be in the driver seat since this is his adventure not the other way around.
Again, sometimes Mario gets overzealous with his competitive nature or even temper but that's not the norm. Overall Mario loves Luigi and would never do anything to hurt him.
I hope you didn't need me to tell you that.

Day 2!
(The 16th)
So you've gotten yourself acquainted and made it here in one piece... Well done! Im glad there was no trouble! Feel free to mingle and explore the place at your leisure!
Now for today's prompts:
Grudges!
Now that I've welcomed you in and offered you some treats... It's time for a rather serious discussion. I'm very particular about my parties and want everyone to know I'll do everything in my power to keep this one safe and hospitable for my friends and subjects. To put it bluntly, if you've got beef with anyone in attendance, I advise you settle your differences outside before we continue on with the festivities. Go on! Get it out of your system! Bicker, fight, whatever needs to be done! Personally, I feel the need to look for a certain scientist and make sure he isn't here mucking about...
Or
Spin-offs!
We have many fun things to do at this ball! Racing, golfing, tennis...and of course party games! Have you ever thought about your self insert or oc in a Mario spin-off game? What outfit would they wear? What class would they fall into? Power? Tricky? Speedy? What sort of kart would they drive in a race? What's their special move? The choice is yours!
(Today's regular prompts were provided by our dear VIP @hoi-imma-mary ✨)
Now for our musical prompts...
Phantom Dancing!
The queen has begun stirring everyone into a dance and... Luigi is here? What's he singing so somberly about? The hostess of the ball seems to still be having the time of her life as she dances across the mansion with her beloved... Ghosts partner up and follow suit. Will you?
Or
Luigis Mansion DS!
A racetrack fit for a king! Or queen.. Or plumber... Will you be joining everyone for a quick race around Boo Woods? Or will you sit on the sidelines and cheer? You could also dance along, but you might be considered an obstacle-
That's all for today! I hope you all have the loveliest time 💕
#Banshee Blossom Ball 2024#BansheeBlossomBall2024#sorry for posting an hour late! i actually got cozy and fell asleep -w-

What's your favourite / least favourite mario game?
this is one of the hardest questions i’ve ever been asked in my life :-( i love so many of them soooo so much and i don’t think i could pick a least favourite.. it’s also important to note that i haven’t beaten a lot of the mario games i own 💀 i still need to beat superstar saga and i’m only at the beginning/early middle of BiS. i also haven’t beaten smrpg and i’m not very far in paper mario 64 or mario + rabbids kingdom battle. i’m still working on 100%ing galaxy super mario 64 ds and super mario 3d world so i haven’t beaten those either. my brother owns it but i’ve never played luigi’s mansion dark moon myself 😭
i think my favourite story in any mario game is spm (because like. yknow. if you couldn’t tell.) but i really really love like. most of them LOL. galaxy is probably my favourite of the like. 64-sunshine-galaxy-odyssey 3d platformers, i love 3d land, and all of the M&L rpgs but especially PiT and dream team are so special to me
idk if i really have a least favourite?? i obviously prefer the story heavy games but i love the platformers and spinoffs too (<- mariokart wii + marioparty 8 + mario power tennis lover especially) . i guess i don’t really get too excited about the new super mario bros series but i wouldn’t consider any of them to be BAD games. i also obviously am not gonna say anything like mario teaches typing mario is missing mario’s time machine hotel mario etc because i don’t own and have never played any of those LOL
i think the games i’m least likely to revisit are like. new super mario bros wii and new super mario bros 2 :-( . nothing against them but like you’ve played em once you’ve played em enough LOL. i still pop open 3d land sometimes i still get excited to dick around in lm/3 and odyssey i play mariokart and marioparty all the time and i still replay the rpgs LOL. the nsmb games just aren’t like as good to me. those 2 especially because you can’t play as luigi as p1 and that’s all i wanted to do as a kid LOL
#talk tag#ask tag#sorry for rambling LMAO#i love like. every mario game unfortunately. i have things to say about literally every single one LOL#one might go as far as to say that i am a fan of the series LMFAO

In its lifespan from 2001 to 2007, Nintendo licensed over 600 GameCube games. Nintendo bolstered the console's popularity by creating new franchises, such as Pikmin and Animal Crossing, and renewing some that had skipped the Nintendo 64, such as with Metroid Prime. Longer standing franchises include the critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Super Mario Sunshine, and the GameCube's best-selling game, Super Smash Bros. Melee, at 7 million copies worldwide. Other Nintendo games are successors to Nintendo 64 games, such as F-Zero GX; Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour; Mario Kart: Double Dash; Mario Party 4, 5, 6, and 7; Mario Power Tennis; and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Though committed to its software library, Nintendo was still criticized for not releasing enough launch window games and by the release of Luigi's Mansion instead of a 3D Mario game.

I'll make my own post about this later (longer, more of my thoughts) but non-exhaustive list of really good brotherly moments off the top of my head in no particular order
Luigi reaching for Mario's arm when Bowser's Airship's robotic arm shifts overhead (New Super Mario Bros U, intro)
Mario running to grab Luigi first (choosing him over Peach) when the portal opens overhead (Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, intro)
Luigi crying and laughing in relief at having his brother back (Luigi's Mansion 1, ending)
Mario patting Luigi on the back and congratulating him on a job well done rescuing everyone, including himself (Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, ending)
Mario accidently hitting Luigi with a tennis ball, and is genuinely concerned about him, checking up on him and apologizing (Mario Power Tennis, Blooper Reel Credits)
Luigi diving into a group of Boos to rescue Mario, because his love for his brother is greater than his fear of ghosts (Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam)
Charles Martinet's Instagram videos, just silly little moments between them, but I especially like the one where Mario gently adjusts Luigi's crab comment into a pun, and then lets him take the credit for it, laughing with him and later helping him set up the punchline for Wario (Charles Martinet's Mario & Luigi Instagram Videos [Video], 4:29-4:56)
Are there rough moments between them? Yeah of course, I won't deny that, though this reblog isn't the place to elaborate on them.
But yeah, I love both :)
Never trusting Luigi fans who hate Mario

(I forgot to post this yesterday. I had some things on my mind)
This was requested by @kutekite in trade for some art work
They asked me to talk with Luigi about what it can be like to be overshadowed by Mario.
[Interview start]
Garth: Thank you for talking with me today Mr Jupmin.
Luigi: You're welcome and you can just call me Luigi.
Garth: I'm trying to be formal.
Luigi: Well Mister Jupmin was my grandfather's name. Mister Giovanni Jupmin.
Garth: Giovanni Jupmin?
Luigi: No. I said Mister Giovanni Jumpman.
Garth: So his first name is Mister.
Luigi: Yes.
Garth: Uh...why?
Luigi: Well. Back in Italy, my great-grandfather, Lorenzo Jupmin was trapped in a tunnel. The man who saved him went by the name of Mister.
Garth: And he was named after this man.
Luigi: well it was either that or Tharowup (pronounced throw up).
Garth: Okay
...
Garth: So anyways. The question I wanted to ask you. Do you feel like You Are overshadowed by Mario?
Luigi: Uh. That's kind of a complicated question.
Garth: I have time we don't have to get to the airport for another hour.
Luigi: Uh. I guess we can talk on the way. But only if you help me get polterpup into his cage.
Luigi then pulled out a cage that was obviously modeled after a poltergust.
It took us about half an hour to get the polterpup in his Travel Carrier.
Luigi: Hurry up and get in the shuttle. We have to be at the airport in half an hour.
Garth: Alright. Alright. But still you said you would tell me what it's like to be in your brother's shadow.
Luigi: Sigh. Fine.
Luigi: When we were younger, we grew up in Brooklyn. I was always considered the weaker brother. I was always picked last to play basketball. It took me longer to learn how to fix a leaky pipe.
Garth: Wait weren't you taller and could jump higher than Mario. Wouldn't they pick you first to play basketball.
Luigi: It was more about how I acted that made them not want to choose me.
Garth: Well how about when you were older.
Luigi: Me and Mario in high school and college we we're still trying to figure ourselves out. But we were a bit more balanced in our lives. It really wasn't until we had a video game based on our adventures that I started getting the short end of the stick.
After a major plumbing accident happened in the New York sewers. We were hired to fix them. This drum up a lot of business and got the attention of a game designer called Shigeru Miyamoto.
He's already spoke with my parents about what happened with Cranky Kong after a deal with trying to make a game about Popeye fell through. That made the Donkey Kong game.
He wanted to continue and make a game based on our plumbing escapade.
That game happened to be Called Mario Brothers.
Garth: But wasn't that an adventure that you both had.
Luigi: Apparently they changed it for brand purposes. They even did it when we went to the Mushroom Kingdom.
Garth: Side note. How did you and Mario get to the Mushroom Kingdom, I've seen some alternate interpretations.
Luigi: Okay. One day a woman called us up to fix her bathtub, she had to get ready for a party or some other event.
Garth: Whatever happened to her?
Luigi:Not sure. But I want to get back to the story.
Luigi: So me and Mario travel throughout multiple locations to try and find the kidnapped princess from King Bowser Koopa. We eat some mushrooms and fire flowers. We use a power star but because we didn't know it's true power it just gives us invincibility. We meet Toad and he gives us a rude gesture (not the one you're thinking of). Rinse and repeat 8 times till we find the princess.
Garth: Oh I know it happens next. You both move to the Mushroom Kingdom after Merida offers you both the title of SUPER. But I still don't understand why you didn't want the title.
Luigi: It was a personal choice. I didn't want it. I didn't know that much about it or understand why a robot dressed in Tweed is talking to us about being a hero. I'm willing to help my brother and others. But I didn't understand the concept enough to accept it.
Mario however was the more heroic of the two of us. So he took the offer.
Garth: So it is true. Only a willing person can become SUPER.
Luigi: That's nice and all but I thought we were having this conversation about me feeling overshadowed.
Garth: Oh sorry. Please continue
Luigi: As the years passed I felt a bit...Small. it would always Be the "Super Mario Brothers" and never "SUPER Mario and Luigi". In fact I would sometimes not even appear in games regardless of whether or not I actually went on those adventures.
Garth: Must have been tough. Was there any way that you coped.
Luigi: Well there were things that I did to try and get my mind off of it. I played sports like tennis and golf. Of course there were also some unhealthy ways to process this. I can give a pretty deadly stare if someone passes ahead of me while driving. When I go use the poltergust (which is an entirely different matter I don't want to get into right now) I can get the little rough when capturing a mean ghost. And of course it is my power star form. Negative Zone Luigi. Which is the literal obvious representation of me being in my brother's shadow.
Garth: Man. That is..Something.
Luigi: That isn't the last of it though. During the events of the Pure Hearts and Count Bleck. I was hypnotized and became Mister L.
Garth: Oh. So you also reference your own grandfather while also chaneling your possible rreincarnation of Bleckss Grandfather.
Luigi: Look if you know the story as well as I do. Why don't you tell it.
Garth: Sorry. Uh. Please continue.
Luigi: After the whole fusing with Dimentio thing and returning to the Mushroom Kingdom. I had a talk with Mario. I actually revealed that I wasn't entirely under the control of Dimentio's spell. It was just that that piece of me that wasn't under control was my resentment.
[Flashback]
Flashback Mario: So You are...upset with me?
Flashback Luigi: Well...kind of.
Flashback Mario: You don't have to tell me if you don't want to.
Flashback Luigi: No. I feel like things won't get better unless I confront these feelings head on.
Flashback Luigi: Mario. I feel like I am not respected.
Flashback Mario: I respect you.
Flashback Luigi: I know that but it doesn't feel like that sometimes. I mean with the video games and how people react to you compared to me. There was evan that time where I won that tennis game and you stepped on my foot repeatedly WHILE I was receiving my trophy.
Flashback Mario: Yeah. Sorry about that. I hadn't had enough sleep and I was a bit groggy after that night. But I did let you pull my mustache as revenge.
Flashback Luigi: Look. I don't want to talk about revenge or punishment. I want to talk about the root of the problem.
Flashback Mario: Oh. Well if you want to. Go ahead.
Flashback Luigi: I feel like I don't get enough respect and that I'm in your shadow.
Flashback Mario: Luigi. You know you're my equal.
Flashback Luigi: Do I? Because it seems like most of the time I get the short end of the stick. Super Mario Brothers instead of Super Mario and Luigi. My first ever game was an educational game based on an event that never happened. And the second game to focus on me only got made because of us both getting tricked by some boos plus the fact that Kopai needed something to show the Game Cubes effects.
Flashback Mario: Woah... Luigi. I didn't know you felt this way. Or at the very least is this deeply.
Flashback Luigi: Well I do. I'm hoping we can talk about this more.
Flashback Mario: I hope so to.
[Present day]
Luigi: We make sure that we talk about our relationship every once in awhile. And we're better brothers because of it.
Garth: Well that's nice to hear.
Luigi: Yeah it sure is.
Shuttle Driver: Hey. You two. The story was nice and all but you have to get off the shuttle. We arrived here 45 minutes ago.
Luigi: We better get off. We are late and our flight is in 5 hours. The rest of the game probably arrived here before us.
Garth: Okay but I have one last thing to ask.
Luigi: Make it quick.
Garth: Where's Polterpup
Luigi: That's easy. He is in his ca...
Luigi: Where is he!?!?
Garth: I think he's eating that venders kebabs at that kebab cart.
Luigi: [While running after Polterpup] POLTERPUP!!!
[Interview end]
Garth signing off.

(Sorry for hijacking your post with my own theories but also its cool to see others thinking about this!!!)
There's also a bit in the beginning of Origami King where you come across the edge of a cute little campground, with a cute little song playing out of a nearby speaker. If you hit the tree the speaker hangs in, the speaker falls to the ground and the music abruptly stops, leaving you to awkwardly walk away and pretend it wasn't you who did that. However! That cute little tune is actually the background music for the main part of the campground, as you find out when you walk towards it, and there are several speakers there, too! So that's a fun way to anchor that song into the world 🙂
And obviously there's the parades and celebratory dances and dance numbers and stuff in the Paper Mario/M&L games - that's kind of a low hanging fruit as far as diegetic music goes. (e.g. in Origami King, you can still hear the parade music in the distance as you leave the area and continue down the river, iirc)
But yeah this theory is fun and I think about it sometimes also, haha. I've personally always explained most of the level/town/character themes away with ambient magic resonating in a certain way that manifests as music. Because, like. Where is the music coming from otherwise, lmao. It would probably be something subtle, something you only really hear and latch onto if you really concentrate on it, because otherwise I dunno if people would want to make towns and settlements with the knowledge that they'd be stuck with some tune incessantly blaring in their ears for all the years they'd be living there XD
Maybe some of the music from SMB 1-1 stuck to Mario while he was there and that's his theme now! It's where his hero journey began, after all. And then he got famous enough that people started making songs based on it or something, lmao. And then it's a weird feedback loop where you hear it on the radio and stuff but also Mario brings the song with him wherever he goes by virtue of existing. And then it ends up as Wario's ringtone in Mario Power Tennis, somehow.
(I wonder if the magic can't figure out something for Luigi - which is why his theme music shifts as it does between games. He's too complex and multifaceted, heh)
(But meanwhile Peach and her castle are pretty consistent! And Bowser has a lot of different castles throughout the games so it makes sense for the music for those would vary.)
(Also sometimes Bowser and Junior's themes share a melody and that's fun. I just wanted to say that, hehe)
And then that's why everyone's musically on the same page in Luigi's Mansion. I'll bet E. Gadd is in tune with it too, which is why the Game Boy Horror ringtone is the Luigi's Mansion theme as well.
But then if the Mario music is diegetic, then in addition to the background music it would make sense for the timed powerups (e.g. Superstars, Mario Galaxy's Fire and Ice Flowers) and timed switches/challenges (e.g. P-switches, red coin challenges) to have noise playing out loud or in people's heads, too. As well as some minigame music too, like the Chuck Challenges from Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope (that song is the same length as the minigame itself). Or maybe you can figure out that you're trapped underground, for instance, because you listen and hear that pattern of notes echoing in the caverns. Or there's people who like to go diving just so they can hear the underwater music (and then get into debates about which region's body of water has the better version of the tune, haha). And when you're in a level - if you're a native, the song's probably baked into you because you live there, and if you're stuck patrolling the same area for a long time, what else is there to do but listen to the music and dance a little? You're probably bored, after all.
Anyway yeah diegetic music's a fun concept, hehe~
Thesis: in the Mario universe, the characters can hear the background music
I firmly believe that the background music in the Mario games is diegetic, meaning that the characters can hear it. Here are four examples that support this.
EXAMPLE THE FIRST: in Mario x Rabbids Kingdom Battle, when you’re on the overworld as opposed to the tactical encounters, there are various musical things scattered around the world that appear to be playing the music. If you interact with them, you can turn them off and make them stop playing the music… and this causes the music heard by the player to be quieter.
EXAMPLE THE SECOND: in the New Super Mario Bros series, the Koopa Troopas, Goombas, and similar enemies famously dance, jump, or otherwise react to the little “ba-baaah!” musical cues, strongly implying that they can hear it. (And since this affects how they move, a player who doesn’t take this into account will misjudge where the enemies will be at any given moment, possibly causing Mario to get hurt or killed, and that’s somehow hilarious to me.)
EXAMPLE THE THIRD: this one is my favorite. In Super Mario RPG, in the special suite at the Marrymore inn, Mario can go into the bathroom and take a shower. While he does this, he loudly whistles the ground theme from Super Mario Bros. Now I ask you, reader, where could he have heard that song before? Exactly. It’s diegetic, I tell you.
EXAMPLE THE FOURTH: much like the third example, in Luigi’s Mansion, Luigi nervously hums along with the main theme. Where’d he learn the song? Why is he so on-beat? The music being audible in-universe is the simplest explanation.
This simply makes me happy in a geeky way.
#i'm sure that feedback loop happens often#free real estate for composers and the like - just hang out in a cave or on a beach for a while#though i wonder what copyright would be like...a nightmare maybe...#anyway i know handwaving things away as magic is probably boring#but its simple and i like simple haha#and obvs some diegetic music is presumably composed intentionally anyway#(e.g. amusement parks and festivals and sports stadium music and that one Paper Mario song from that sidequest chain)#ok i'll stop now 🙂#smb

QTE: Mario Strikers in 2022??
Image: Nintendo
15 years my friends!
Nintendo’s recent Direct debuting this past February 9th gave just about everyone a little something to look forward to in the coming months of the Switch’s lineup. But what no one saw coming, however, was the nonchalant, heart-stopping reveal of a long-anticipated revival after years of lost hope.
The return of the Mario Strikers series from Next Level Games is finally coming back!
For those unfamiliar with its history, this announcement may have appeared to be like any other Mario sports spinoff used to fill a gap in the coming lineup, and you may be wondering what all the excitement is about. The last of only two entries in this series was Mario Strikers Charged for the Nintendo Wii way back in the long-forgotten time of 2007. But for reasons we could only hypothesize, Strikers seemingly had the rug pulled out from it just as it was getting started, becoming just another tale for those of us who were there to tell our grandkids about.
For me, it all began in 2005 with Super Mario Strikers for the Nintendo Gamecube. I’ve always loved Nintendo’s wackier sports romps since I was young, and this game quickly swept me and my friends up like wildfire, rising to an instant classic status. There’s no shortage of fun callbacks between us—one of our friends within this group of regulars went as far as skipping track practice to meet up at my house for a few rounds. His team coach, ironically, was also one of my neighbors so news traveled fast. Strikers was like a fever, however, and I think it caught on so well for being so different—it didn’t have the same DNA to previous Mario sports games, like Mario Tennis and Mario Golf: it was frantic, intense, and dialed up the cool factor to 11.
Image: Nintendo
When a sequel arrived for the Nintendo Wii in 2007, we were all over it, of course. In true sequel fashion, Mario Strikers Charged layered on several new elements to the gameplay and went even further in its brutal theme with the cast now wearing full-body armor and kicking around a metal soccer ball that could be charged up for more power—hence, the title. As a Wii game, it also included online multiplayer as well as the obligatory motion controls that included a new pointer-based minigame that put you in control of your goalie to block a six-scoring onslaught.
We could easily assume that Next Level Games, the developer behind this beloved soccer spinoff and recently acquired by Nintendo in 2021, had their hands full in reviving Luigi’s Mansion with two sequels—Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for 3DS in 2013 and Luigi’s Mansion 3 in 2019 for Switch. Preceding Luigi’s return to ghost hunting, the studio released several other games following Charged, including another revival—this time it was the return of Little Mac in Punch-Out!! for the Wii.
While Next Level Games has clearly been busy all this time, it’s also been speculated that Mario Strikers, in its drastic departure from what you would expect to see in a typical Mario game, inevitably reached a breaking point post-Charged. Mario Strikers are violent games. Though never beyond cartoonish, characters throw their whole body into tackles that can make you wince, and the playing fields are surrounded by electric fences for some reason? And of course, who could forget the amazing victory animations, such as Waluigi’s unforgettable crotch chop celebration.
Image: Nintendo
However, though for years it seemed like a Strikers revival was a distant hope, something has happened behind the curtains and Nintendo finally delivered. With the recent confirmation that Next Level Games is indeed the developer for Mario Strikers Battle League, I’ll be eagerly waiting alongside fans and newcomers alike to the new era of Strikers.
And I hope that this time next year, we’ll be talking about Mario’s return to baseball…
