Explaining the 2 Luigi's New Mansions + Googi Hypothesis
So in Luigi's Mansion after the Boos are defeated the Mansion disappears because it was a creation of the Boos. From here you can get any number of Rank Mansions for Luigi's New Mansion that is built, depending on how well you did in the game. So in Mario Kart Double Dash on Luigi's Circuit we see Luigi's New Mansion which is the one from the Rank A ending. Seems to be open and shut right? Well... not really. In Luigi's Mansion 2 Dark Moon we see Luigi in his New Mansion which is the Rank D Mansion? So what's going on here? Well I have a few hypotheses.
The first one is Luigi decided to build 2 Mansions and is living in one primarily. It's plausible but seems like an easy cop-out.
Another hypothesis is Luigi either had a D Rank Mansion and upgraded to a Rank A Mansion placing Double Dash after LM2DM. Or Luigi had a Rank A Mansion and downgraded to a Rank D Mansion. Both are possible but seems a bit complex.
The third hypothesis is the Rank D Mansion is the one from the canon ending, while the Rank A Mansion is a prop created for the Double Dash event. The creation of props and buildings for karting and sports events is not uncommon, and we even see it happen for the original Mansion created by the Boos. We see one in Mario Power Tennis, Mario Super Sluggers, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Mario Kart DS.
Now for the fourth and final hypothesis, and the one I think is what happened. So in the Luigi's Mansion 3DS game and extra bit of plot is added to the game. A future Professor Elvin Gadd sends Gooigi back in time to the events of Luigi's Mansion, to learn from Luigi. So as established in a previous post, time travel alters the past and present. So what I believe happened is the act of sending Gooigi back in time changed the past, and thus what Rank Mansion Luigi gets. This could explain why there is 2 New Mansions, one is from before Gooigi went back in time, the other is from after he went back in time. Side note, I like the attention to detail of E. Gadd still having access to time travel.

About your comic, I imagine E gadd seeing his two children as babies and immediately adopting a protective role with them, or adopting them, period. I laugh thinking about it.
Excuse my phone's shadow, lol! Idk when I'll include Gadd in the comic itself, but your ask inspired me!

Me playing the Luigi's Mansion 3ds port: Wow I can't believe that for the united purpose of building up how Gooigi was tested in preparation for Luigi's Mansion 3 and explaining how co-op works in this 3ds port, the Luigi's Mansion series canonically has time travel and the 3ds port continuity specifically is canon to the rest of the games.

Oh now I'm very curious about the serial Luigi-variant adopter Mario AU :D
So it all starts with Gooigi.
Mario is introduced to Gooigi after being rescued from the painting in Luigi’s Mansion 3. Luigi explains it by saying, “this is Gooigi, a goo clone of me made by the professor by accident (I think it was an accident). He’s slowly been gaining sentience and I can put my consciousness into his body. Any questions?”
Mario has many but this isn’t the weirdest thing they’ve dealt with and he decides it would be best to just move on and rescue the Princess.
At the end of it all, Mario is very persistent about Gooigi coming home with them. Luigi is attached to him, Mario is attached to him, and they both wanna see what he can learn to do. Gooigi seemingly likes them back, and generally tends to follow Luigi around and copy him, and he’s even started doing the same thing to Mario!
E Gadd allows it, but they have to send him monthly progress reports. Mario and Luigi immediately agree.
Little brother 1 is acquired!
Gooigi adapts to his new home life very easily. He’s not capable of feeling bored, so he often ends up just standing around. He likes to copy the things Mario and Luigi do, even if he doesn’t understand it. He’ll sit and watch tv with them, he’ll pretend to read a book, things like that. Gooigi likes easy, repetitive tasks and takes a liking to cleaning and gardening!
The next to be acquired are the baby versions of themselves.
I imagine that Mario and Luigi are not native to the magic universe (also known as the Altworld). They’re from a different universe (the Earthworld), and fell here one day. They were already adults when it happened, and while they feel more at home here than they ever did in the Earthworld, they still wish they could’ve said goodbye to their friends and family.
Anyway, timeline shenanigans, alternate dimensions, and outright time travel lead to them traveling with their baby selves. Just as Mario and Luigi had no way to return home, it’s discovered that their baby selves will also be unable to return home.
Of course Mario and Luigi adopt them! They can’t think of any other way to handle the situation, of course they adopt them!
Little brothers 2 and 3 acquired!
The first thing Mario and Luigi do are give the littles new names, since having multiple Marios and Luigis has already gotten confusing. The littles help pick their new names, and they settle on Mateo and Louis.
Small children need a lot of love and attention, so their lives start to revolve more around Mateo and Louis. It’s a huge change, much larger than Gooigi joining them, but they’re happy!
Mateo and Louis adapt to this new situation really well, all things considered. The main issue is they have trouble communicating with people other than their brothers. Being the children of Italian immigrants to the USA, Mario and Luigi spoke Italian at home and learned English through TV and preschool. Mateo and Louis aren’t quite school aged yet, so they speak almost exclusively Italian. Fine for Mario and Luigi, not so fine for everyone else.
Mateo and Louis greatly enjoy going on adventures, but Mario and Luigi stick to the less dangerous ones for the littles. For the more dangerous ones they get close friends to watch them (people like Peach, Daisy, and sometimes Peasley). Mateo and Louis don’t understand the difference between a normal adventure and a world-saving quest, and often get upset when they don’t get to come with.
Still, the arrangement works and overall everyone is happy!
Finally, it’s Mr L.
The incident with Bleck happened a few years back. At some point Bleck reappeared with Tippi (apparently he was now in therapy), and overall the Mario Bros are now on good terms with most of Bleck’s team. Mario is very cautious about Nastasia, though.
Anyway, Mr L and Luigi get split one day after Luigi goes and tests some modified power ups from E Gadd.
He tries a bee shroom that gives him an extra set of arms, a super bell that makes him a catboy, a fire flower that made him a fire bender, and finally a double cherry that gave him Mr L.
Seconds after becoming his own separate person, Mr L immediately tried to beat up Luigi. He lost that fight. He then tried to fight E Gadd. Luigi bested him again. Mario came to pick up Luigi and Mr L tried to fight him too (he lost).
Seeing little other option, the Bros took him in, and Mr L only agreed because he didn’t really know what else to do (and because Luigi promised to help him get revenge on Dimentio (who’s already dead so he doesn’t really need to keep that promise)).
Mr L doesn’t take the situation well, and actively attempts to cause problems for everyone. He just found out his entire life is a lie so he’s acting out like a rebellious teenager.
Dealing with him is extremely difficult, and there are several occasions where Mario and Luigi debate keeping him there at all.
Then one day Peach hosts a private go-kart competition with her friends. Mario and Luigi love these competitions, and she knows they need a healthy way to get out some of their frustration.
Anyway, they leave Mr L alone with his go-kart for literally five minutes and when they come back he’s already torn the thing apart. They’re frustrated at first but don’t want to deal with it. They just let him do that for a few hours.
They come back and Mr L is the happiest he’s ever been, and eagerly talks to them about the modifications he’s making to his kart.
As it turns out, part of Mr L’s issue is that he didn’t have a goal in life anymore. His purpose was to serve the Count, but now that everything he’s ever known is gone, he didn’t know what to do with himself other than antagonize his ‘brothers’.
They let him do whatever the hell he wants with the go-kart, and begin encouraging him to get more hobbies too. Finally he’s opening up to them, isn’t antagonizing them as much, and starts to work on becoming his own person.
Brother 4 acquired!
Mr L bonds pretty heavily with Mateo and Louis, and ends up becoming the primary babysitter whenever Mario and Luigi go out and do stuff. Fine by him, he’s content to have a few helping hands in his workshop (the garage), even if said helping hands are loud, gross, and pull his socks down when they’re bored.
He also works on distinguishing himself more from Luigi. He grows his hair out longer, changes up his jumpsuit, stuff like that.
90% of the family au is pretty much “how do Mateo, Louis, and Mr L end up different thanks to the different circumstances?” Which is one of my favorite things to explore! Plus there’s plenty of wholesome family moments (like the littles coming to Mr L’s room to sleep) and hilarious sibling shenanigans (the time Mateo, Louis, and Gooigi tried baking cookies while the other three were out of the house).

callout for nintendo: just bullied the hell out of Luigi in their “Good Hang or Tough Hang” Luigi’s Mansion 3 video for being scared of a hotel that’s full of ghosts that want to hurt him
#look! even abiding to the rule of the characters ONLY being themselves from that game i can't get behind the idea that he's a tough hang#you showed the beginning scenes for polterpup examples! therefor they also count for luigi examples#just don't scare the man!!! keep him out of spooky areas and he'll be chill!#i get the points about him being clumsy (which like. not a big deal.) and rifling through things (which.. okay. i'll give them that.) but#c'mon luigi would be a good person to hang out with#Rambles Into The Void#''why did you watch that video?'' you may be wondering. ''what is ''good hang or tough hang''?'' you may also be wondering.#i was also wondering that latter question and wanted to find out and just. stuck around for the whole video.#turns out it's.. sorta like an E For Everyone-rated smash or pass?#like.. if you'd hang out with them if they were real (and then they justify it in the video but that doesn't seem necessary)#also i fully disagree w/ them on E. Gadd he would be the WORST hang#and yes i'm discounting the aforementioned rule but idc.#i don't think i even need to bring up my examples but like.. he's kinda terrible?#his experiments are ethically dubious (as seen when he reports experimenting on gooigi in painful-looking ways)#he doesn't learn from his mistakes (TIME TRAVEL.)#and knowingly uses potentially-dangerous technology on people (the pixelator)#and that's just the stuff i know for certain off the top of my head#he is the worst hang#and this post has turned into another E. Gadd rant. oops.

Alright so I made my Mario Timeline chart and boy is it interesting.
let’s start at the beginning. Yoshi’s Island is the start of the timeline, that’s when Mario is a baby. Then we go into the Mario Bros arcade game and Super Mario Bros, simple enough. Then there’s a split because the american Super Mario Bros 2 is a dream taking place in the realm of Subcon which through various cross-references includes, super mario land series, wario land, the frog for whom the bell tolls, link's awakening, some dr.mario games, captain rainbow and the dragon quest/mario crossover game more on that here
The main timeline goes on to Super Mario Bros 3 and then Super Mario World. In the manuals of 3 the Koopa kids say its their first time meeting Mario and Mario World manual says its a direct sequel to Mario Bros 3.
After that is Super Mario 64, the order of Super Mario Bros then Super Mario Bros 3 and then Super Mario 64 is shown in Super Mario Sunshine. Luigi’s Mansion comes after 64 and then the aforementioned Super Mario Sunshine. Then Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga as E.Gadd is a character and Luigi already has the poltergust.
After that is M&L: Partners In Time where they travel back to the baby era. This creates a split because obviously in one timeline they didnt meet their future selves as babies and battle bowser.
Yoshi’s Island DS references this timeline shenanigans and Yoshi’s New Island takes place before that so I’d argue this is the beginning of a new timeline. This is the New Baby Timeline.
The other timeline is the other Mario & Luigi games in order as they tend to reference the previous entry as if it has just happened.
In Paper Jam it’s revealed that the Paper Mario series takes place within a magic book in the main universe.
After that comes Luigi’s Mansion 2 where things are split again. Per the info on Gooigi, during the events of Luigi’s Mansion 2 E.Gadd sent Gooigi back in time to the first Luigi’s Mansion, this means the Luigi’s Mansion 3DS remake is canonically in an alternate timeline due to Gooigi’s inclusion. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the second game in the Gooigi Timeline.
The other timeline after Luigi’s Mansion 2 is Super Mario Galaxy but this one stops short due to the events of that game, basically erasing that timeline and causing a new timeline to be born i.e Super Mario Galaxy 2, from there we go down the releases with Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker and finally Super Mario Odyssey. I call this Rosalina's World.
An offshoot of Rosalina's World is the Mario+Rabbids timeline where the Rabbids shoot into Mario's world. It's part of Rosalina's World because of Rabbid Rosalina in Sparks of Hope.
I had fun making this. Obviously the Zelda timeline connects to the Mario timeline via the subcon realm and link's awakening but that's a can of worm for another day.

Tumblr's being weird and won't let me find the Dark Moon rewrite post. I think there was one where you explained the story behind it, at least?
I JUST HAVENT MADE A FULL POST ON IT IM SORRYYYY but i can do bullet points of what’s going down
- so basically this kinda comes from a place of me like. liking dark moon but wishing it had more Characters. so it started with making boss ghosts and then kinda escalated
- so the plot is luigi is looking for e gadd after he went missing in a place near the mansion called evershade valley, unfortunately along the way we see a flash of lightning, a scream, and then cut to darkness
- it fades back in and it’s revealed that luigi is now... a GHOST!! oh no! (this would be the main ‘gimmick’ of the game like how mansion 3 had gooigi as a big selling point)
- he realizes he’s in a lab and he’s been captured by a ghost researcher named professor evershade who said his ghostly dna seemed different somehow so he wanted to see more
- luigi explains the situation and asks if he can help him contact e gadd but all lines to him are dead- evershade theorizes that he must have been taken by the same spectre that turned luigi into a ghost, and luigi immediately goes ‘KING BOO....’ bc who else does he have beef with.
- evershade suggests that if they defeat the four rulers of the nearby mansions they can assemble the dark moon, an artifact that will make sure no ghost will be able to cause their own mischief again
- luigi agrees, and in the meantime evershade says he can try to work on a way to see if he can change luigi back from a ghost
- he uses the same teleportation device e gadd does in dark moon to get luigi in and out of evershades lab, and luigi usually winds up in the small garden which leads to the four mansions
- (meta talk here- the multiple mansion exploring and evershades appearance are meant to kinda trick the player into thinking that it’s a ‘different character same purpose’ scenario, like how both goombario and goombella are tattling goombas)
- (you also get access to regular luigi after clearing one or two rooms in the first mansion- this serves as a bit of a tutorial segment for ghost luigis abilities and how youll be able to switch between ghost luigi and regular luigi to accomplish different tasks)
- ghost luigi probably has the power of a portrait ghost himself, so would have abilities such as the ability to scare other ghosts into fleeing a room or scaring them into doing stuff for him (which would serve as both a puzzle solution and a short-term solution for any segments where you may be stuck as ghost luigi), there are also other abilities like passing through walls (but most new rooms will be VERY dark so it would be hard to suss out details), spectral wind, etc. regular luigi is the one able to catch ghosts though, and regular and ghost forms will often interact in puzzles like a slightly less co-op based luigi and gooigi system
- the first mansion, gloomy manor, is a pretty standard mansion, it’s very old and filled w cobwebs. the boss is a spider-themed ghost, madame moufette. she says the mansions been lost to time and now only the spiders and ghosts live there
- the second mansion, haunted towers, is... actually only a one floor lobby. it’s only when you take the elevator that you realize the entire building is underground and it leads you to a literal icy bunker where an arctic ghost, macready, has spent ages under the bunker and is convinced that a light wielding beast is hunting him down
- the third mansion, treacherous mansion, is a house of illusion, led by a chess-playing ghost named rook. there are stuff like portals, tv static, living suits of armour, the like. rook’s message to luigi is that not everything is as it seems in evershade valley
- luigi comes back from treacherous mansion and gives evershade the third piece of the dark moon, which is when evershade reveals he had the fourth piece of the dark moon all along- and. here’s where things get fucky wucky i’m so sorry
- evershade lifts his goggles and takes off his hat and reveals that HE’S luigi from the future. after the events of mansion 1, luigi eventually decided to become an apprentice to e gadd and became a full time ghost researcher. things don’t seem so different at first but unfortunately e gadd game-overs and so luigi is left all on his own. which is a bummer. with his mentor gone luigi throws himself into his work, neglecting going on adventures with mario to a point that he just stops getting invited... (took mario a VERY long time to stop asking though. make no mistake) over time he becomes a bit of a recluse and his curious and observant nature kinda becomes a hunger for knowledge... he wants to know just what the strange and unusual is and what makes it tick. he also starts using professor evershade as a pen name bc ‘dr mario’ gets people asking about his research for the wrong reasons. though not only does he become more curious but he gets very very bored. ghosts are just poltergeists, tricksters... they’re nothing without a leader. luigi tries to bring back king boo, he invents all sorts of things to try- but the one thing the professor did that he didn’t was invent that damn portrait machine (which has rusted and broken with time- it’s been like, 20-25 years at this point).
- basically, what starts out as ‘i need to bring king boo back so i can have a proper rogues gallery of ghosts to study’ turns into ‘i need to bring king boo back but why would i even defeat him? this is great for paranormal studies’ so yeah. now evershade would like to see the ghost world at its fullest power
- he time travelled back to the past to try and convince e gadd to free king boo (yes he made a time machine hashtag smart) but e gadd fights back, destroying the portrait machine he built. evershade is Angry about this and decides if he won’t help him... perhaps someone else will. his ‘time machine’ is actually a large building that affects all of evershade valley, so it, how it was 20 years into the future, was brought into the past. his backup plan was to trap luigi in evershade valley by turning him into a ghost and making him collect the dark moon shards that he had always wanted but couldn’t get (his ghost researching skills are fine but his ghost hunting skills are out of shape. he could have done that in the first place but he kinda wanted to see his old mentor again.)
- the dark moon itself is an artifact split into four parts bc its effect on ghosts is too much to stand, even for ghosts- it’d give whoever owns it absolute power over the paranormal world and its residents, so the four mansion ghosts have taken it upon themselves to protect them (evershades original plan also involved teaming up with king boo to defeat the ghosts and take the dark moon for themselves)
- (actually, the fourth mansion ghost is polterpup! the dark moon piece WAS in his collar but a certain evershade stole it after the doggy lets his guard down around luigi
- evershade, using the dark moons power, casts a blacklight into king boos painting and finally frees him, offering him ultimate power and ruling over ghosts if they work together as a team. king boo finds this hashtag funny so he’s like ok
- then, luigi gets teleported out of the lab before he can try and stop them. polterpup points him towards where evershades lab has been all along- the fourth and final mansion, old clockworks
- in there luigi finds e gadd being held hostage, where he reveals evershade was trying to threaten him into freeing king boo
- as ghost luigi you also experience side effects of the dark moon in this final dungeon, like controller inputs not working or luigi needing to stop and wrestle off a headache
- so yea... final boss is basically king boo fighting you and evershade cheering him on and you need to counter king boos attacks so that they hit the dark moon and destroy it
- luigi sucks up king boo.... LOL
- evershade is defeated and he doesn’t even have an evil monologue he just kinda stares at luigi unimpressed like ‘really? this is the route you’re taking’ and luigi silently just kinda grabs onto e gadd and whatever toads are in this game. and neither of them say anything
- somewhere in old clockworks a clock goes off, and all the rest of them do too (the one time you hear every clock in sync). fade to white and e gadd and luigi wake up in an empty field where a construction worker asks if they’re ok. pan out to reveal evershade is gone and there’s apparently a construction crew hoping to build four brand new buildings here in this valley
UM THATS IT LOL.... it’s rly overcomplicated i know. i’m sorry.

are we all going to forget the fact that E Gadd knows how to canonically time travel? Like not even that, he knows how to also travel or at least sent objects to  alternate timelines. Like in PiT, that was a bit-janky But in the canonical lore of Luigi Mansion,( the third and 3DS port game to be correct) we see E Gadd send Gooigi back in time to train with the Luigi in the 3DS port -- which by the way, is not the same, copy to pasted game as Luigi Mansion on the Gamecube due to portrait ghost gallery. why and like, how

Ok I'm on anon because it's 10 pm when I'm sending this but a comment from Random Mario made me think about this. So, Gooigi was made from ectoplasm mixed with green coffee. He's shaped like Luigi from data gathered from the pixelator, and is tested through time travel happening within the time periods of LM1 and the 3rd of 5-6 sections of LM2/Dark Moon. The pixelator can likely contain data from both living, nonliving, and dead things. Did it pick up the Chaos Heart? Does Gooigi have one, too?
omg I never actually thought of this, which is crazy because I did have the notion that Gadd would definitely try to pixelate the Chaos Heart out of Luigi and Dimentio would throw hands with him about it. I don’t think the Heart would pass through Luigi into anything else, though, especially like...as a data capture. Any computer trying to contain it as data would probably explode. And it wouldn’t have shown up in Luigi’s DNA either, so Gooigi is safe.
I had to really think about that for a second, that was scary
The real question might be................what happens if you give the Chaos Heart coffee.........

Hi! This is Luigi, from the Mario series! I’ve been missing people, especially my bro, a lot more recently. I figured I should try to get a canon call out there to try to help with that! This’ll probably get long, though, sorry! Feel free to ask me about any of this, and anything I might’ve missed.
As far as memories go, Mario and I grew up in the Mushroom Kingdom. Past that, though, it may be easier to give a list of games I have memories from. I’ll try to get the weird ones out of the way first so anyone checking to see if I’m a canonmate can check for those, first.
We did have competitive sports matches about once a year, and the same’s true for kart races. I only know about the story mode for Mario Tennis Aces, but I can tell you that, unfortunately, that did happen. It’s likely that other story mode events happened, too, but I haven’t checked yet. The normal, less story based platformers were similar to the sports and kart games - events that happened that weren’t originally connected. Yes, Double Cherry Pass existed. We did explore it a few times. We didn’t go running through while searching for fairies that Bowser kidnapped, though.
I wasn’t able to help out during Sunshine, and Galaxy is familiar but I don’t have any actual kin feelings towards it other than that Rosalina is very familiar. I haven’t checked Galaxy 2 yet. Odyssey and Balloon World is probably part of my canon, though.
I remember that Super Mario RPG happened, but I wasn’t there for that. The first three Paper Mario games also happened. It took time, but I did eventually remember my time as Mr. L, as opposed to canon which says no one even knew who I was. I’m not Paper Luigi, though, and I don’t have memories of Sticker Star, Color Splash, or Origami King.
I also remember all of the Mario and Luigi series, but especially Superstar Saga and Dream Team. I do have memories from the other three, though, including Paper Jam. I did keep Thunderhand (unlike canon, which never mentions it again). I have no way of telling whether the originals or the remakes were my canon, since the changes between the two are mostly limited to Bowser’s minions or the Koopalings.
I have memories from the Luigi’s Mansion series. My canon follows the remake of Luigi’s Mansion, so there’s a few time travel shenanigans. Gooigi was mostly his own person, he just needed some guidance. If you compare a solo player game to a co-op game, Floor 3 matches best with a solo player, but otherwise it was more like a co-op game.
I’m 21, and while I’ll probably still talk to you if you’re a minor, I’d prefer talking to other adults! I’d really like to talk to any of my friends as either Luigi or Mr. L. This includes Mario, Peach, Bowser, Peasley, Daisy, and Tippi/Timpani, as well as Nastasia, O'Chunks, Mimi, Dimentio (may be iffy, hope you understand), and Count Bleck/Blumiere, but even if I didn’t list you here, I’d love to hear from you! I’m ok with doubles, and even if you’re not my canonmate, I’d really like to talk to you. If you like or reblog this, I’ll probably check your blog!
Oh, and I’ll probably rb this to my own blog, so you might see that in the notes.
(If you wanna add anything, Metta, feel free to!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good luck, my dear Luigi!
You know what, after thinking far more than was reasonable for this subject, I’ve come to the conclusion that if you had to give a Mario character unrestrained access to a time machine, E. Gadd isn’t too terrible a choice.
For one, his entire motivation for using it is idle curiosity. Compare Bowser who uses time travel for attempted murder and accumulating power. Compare the traditional use of time machines to “set right what once went wrong” only to make things a dozen times worse. Having no plans to alter the past makes E. Gadd a surprisingly responsible time machine owner.
Secondly, E. Gadd basically forgets he has a time machine when it’s not immediately relevant to what he’s doing at the moment. Kind of like how I technically own a waffle maker but I have to make an effort to remember it exists as I haven’t used it in years. E. Gadd does not view his potentially incredibly dangerous time machine as a fix to all his problems, which, let’s face it, is a difficult ask.
Lastly, while I did joke about the absurdity of Peach/the Mushroom Kingdom government not immediately confiscating and destroying the time machine, as far as I know he’s only used it once since Partners in Time. (I could easily be wrong as there’s a lot of Mario lore out there and I’ve only taken an interest since April so who knows). In the remake of Luigi’s Mansion, he sends Gooigi back in time so that there could be a two player mode he could get Gooigi trained on fighting actual ghosts. He uses his freaking time machine to augment his goo child’s homeschool education. All things considered that’s a pretty tame use of time travel.
          It had been a whole year since he was last seen anywhere near his home. That night--... That night had wounded him. L would never admit it, but that blasted hotel he had to climb was the last thing he ever wanted to do. He thought Evershade Valley was the last time he had to play the hero. He barely made it out of that with himself intact. How did Luigi do it? he often thought. How did Luigi handle these fears? How did he deal with the times when he just wanted to throw in the towel? He couldn’t take it. That night weighed on him like a few tons of bricks. There was something haunting him about that hotel owner from the very beginning, and his worries were confirmed with each floor he cleared out. He had a hand in this. He was out there, scheming along with the ghosts to bring him to his knees. Who else would know exactly how to torment him?
Tumblr media
          And once L made these connections, he knew exactly what he had to do: he had to leave. He had to get as far away from his loved ones as he possibly could. That was why these illusions were becoming so much more realistic, right? That was why he saw his handiwork in every single floor, right? That was why everyone was in danger, right? Because the green-clad existence was never meant to continue in this form? So he finished the job as quickly as he could, despite the ever-growing paranoia. He reached the top, faced the royal specter once more, and...fled. Brobot was called once he passed the metaphorical torch to his goo counterpart. Of course, L stayed close by long enough to make sure Gooigi could actually free everyone. And once his bleeding heart could actually rest for a brief moment, he took Polterpup and flew off in his mech.
          He wanted to find the jester, no matter what it took. He needed to. There were so many people in danger just by Dimentio being allowed to roam free. So many. One that came to mind rather frequently was Daisy. If so much of Luigi’s heart was exposed and given to the enemy to manipulate, he feared for Daisy the most. She was the most out of the loop with all of this. If he were to show up in front of her--... He couldn’t even imagine the terror that would surge through his fragile heart.
                    [(DRAFT) TXT - TO DAISY]: I’m sorry. I’m so so so sorry. I’m a stupid idiot and I haven’t been completely truthful with you. I don’t expect you to forgive me. If I live through this night, I’ll come down and explain myself in person to you.
          But that journey never found a happy ending. With his faithful ghost pup in tow, the two of them sped through countless worlds in search of the jester that should be no more. There was no sign, no trace in the multitude of galaxies they traveled through. Dimentio was never in these areas. It was a conclusion that L didn’t want to come to, but the farther he went from his home, the more he regretted his sudden departure. How much time, truly, had gone by at home? This deep into space, he was no longer on the same length of time as his loved ones. Had it been weeks? Months? Years? Just how long had he been on this stupid chase after the one that haunts him the most?
          So he turned back around. It was a mistake to leave at all, yet alone without a word. Why did he think this was a good idea, anyway? Just to try to be the hero he always denied he was? Or was this his way of trying to escape the problems he thought were coming back to him? He didn’t know, nor did he want to know. Not anymore. Maybe he really was the stupid idiot that didn’t know how to be completely truthful.
Tumblr media
          It...really had been a year, huh? Pulling the cardigan --- a gift from himself, after saving his own life --- over his shoulders, he looked down on that familiar forest from his perch on top of his mech. It was rather cold at this altitude, so he wrapped the scarf he’d bought on the journey --- a dark green and black plaid, with a few streaks of white to even it out --- around his neck and peered down. Everything looked exactly how he’d left it, right down to his home. The world had moved on without him, but there was one thing he knew, from the bottom of his healing heart:
          “Let’s go see Bro, okay, buddy?”
          -- there will always be a place for him to return to. That was just how Mario was.
Name: Gooigi
Debut: Luigi’s Mansion (3DS)
We really need to have a talk about Gooigi. I swear, I leave this franchise alone for one minute, and all of a sudden it’s coming up with new elements for the periodic table! So bear with me as I try to wrap my head around all this.
You’re all familiar with the 3DS remake of the first Luigi’s Mansion, right? And you all remember how it added two player co-op, which in itself is quite weird... the second player takes control of a green Luigi, which the Nintendo Direct presenter simply described as an “even greener guy”- that’s Gooigi!
Tumblr media
Gooigi was created by the future Professor E. Gadd, and to test his new creation, he simply outsourced it to his past self. So now, (past?) Luigi has to deal with it. Really, time travel is such an inconsequential thing in the Mario universe!
And that would be all we know about Gooigi, but Nintendo has been very kind enough to keep us updated on the newest Mario lore, by updating the Luigi’s Mansion website with E. Gadd’s Research Journals! And these are very much a wild ride! There’s a whole lot of info here, but I’ll try to summarise:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While researching the mysterious liquid that ghosts secrete(?), the good professor receives a hefty shock from a nearby spookster, spilling his Lunoman Greenie blend of coffee into the vial! Completely glossing over the fact that E. Gadd drinks bright green coffee, this mixture created a brand new element: Goo!
Tumblr media
Now, chemistry is undoubtedly my worst subject, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how finding “elements” works... If you mix two things together, that’s a mixture! Ah, well, science isn’t real anyway. Moving on!
Tumblr media
E. Gadd begins testing immediately, and discovers that Goo reacts to external stimuli- it moves away from harmful liquids, reacts to being poked, and moves towards sounds... it’s sentient! Whats the obvious course of action? Why, create a lab assistant made of Goo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By zapping the Goo with Luigi’s DNA, which the professor just keeps around for some reason, he was able to give it a stable, humanoid form that happens to look exactly like Luigi... and so, Gooigi is born! Hurrah!
Is that how this story ends? Is this the last we’ll see of Gooigi, and by extension, Goo? I very much doubt it! Because, my friends, all we’ve seen so far suggests that Goo will have a pivotal role in the recently announced Luigi’s Mansion 3! After all, this E. Gadd is from the future, and Luigi’s brand new Poltergust contains a vial of green liquid: thanks to Smash Ultimate, we know this model is called the Poltergust G-00!
It’s an exciting time to be a Mario analyst! What surprises will Goo hold for us in the future?
Luigis Mansion 3 review
Now I will make one thing clear right now. I did not grow up with the original Luigis Mansion on Nintendo Gamecube, My introduction to the series came in the form of Dark Moon which then led me to the original LM remake on 3DS. And now I have just finished Luigis Mansion 3 the latest in the trilogy as well as the series return to a full fledged home console. How does it hold up  against its predecessors and is this a Hotel worth checking out? Well let’s find out shall we
NOTE This review will primarily be focusing on the main campaign of the game. I won’t be discussing any of the multiplayer modes since I have yet to get into those.
The story begins with Luigi and the rest of the Mario Gang having received an invitation to a 5 star luxury hotel known as the Last Resort and at first everything seems all fine and peaches but in no time at all in a somewhat sickening sense of Deja Vu it turns out the entire thing unsurprisingly was all a ruse perpetrated by Hotel Owner Hellen Gravely as part of a plot by King Boo to capture Luigi and friends. What I can’t help but enjoy in the games opening moments that classic sense of how its plainly obvious to the player something isn’t quite right. Yeah nothing suspicious about the hotel staff wearing creepy masks no sir. Fortunately Luigi manages to escape and inevitably ends up running into Professor E Gadd who ended up meeting a similar fate. From there it becomes a trek upward through the Last Resort to find your missing companions and stop whatever King Boo has planned. Fairly standard stuff for a Mario Story but its serviceable and gets the narrative out nice and clear.
Now onto the gameplay. If you are familiar with Dark Moon much of the combat will be highly familiar to you. You use your strobulb to flash ghosts which stuns them allowing you to vacuum them up. The Dark Light returns as well which pretty much serves the same functions as before One difference to the combat though comes in the form of the slam attack which more or less replaces the Power Surge from Dark Moon. In some ways I actually like this new change as it has applications both as a form of crowd control as well as a puzzle solving tool to an extent more on that in a bit. Another new ability is the burst which is triggered by pressing both shoulder buttons. This is primarily used as another form of crowd management during fights as well as a means to activate certain mechanisms as well as being used in some boss battles to either to dodge attacks or to help expose a bosses weak point. The third new ability is the suction shot which allows you to attach a plunger with a rope to an object which can then be pulled on. Next to the Dark Light the suction shot is probably your biggest puzzle solving tool period. Not only can it be used to destroy objects and furniture when combined with the slam but many of the games bosses practically require it. Don’t be surprised either if you find yourself compulsively firing plungers everywhere just to see what you can grab onto which is often rewarded with you finding more gold or collectibles. The final new skill and probably the most important one at that comes in the form of Gooigi a flubber esque doppleganger of Luigi that can be summoned at any time by pressing in on the right stick. You unlock him not far into the story but once you do this is where the game really starts to open up puzzle wise. Gooigi has a few distinct advantages over Luigi mainly being not effected by spikes and other hazards as well as being able to slip through pipes and metal grates to access new areas. But don’t think you can just use Gooigi all the time as his advantages are offset by a number of key weaknesses chief of which being he doesn’t handle water very well and he has less overall health than Luigi. These are pretty much all the skills you will be using through the whole game although there is one other ability you unlock relatively late in the game but its incredibly situational being only required once with other cases just being to retrieve a few optional collectibles.
Now how bout that Last Resort. The hotel itself is divided up between 17 floors total consisting of 15 main floors and two basement levels Unlike Dark Moon, Luigis Mansion 3 goes back to the single building setup of the first game but its amazing really how Next Level has managed to pack so much variety into a hotel. Initially you will be exploring typical hotel trappings such as state rooms, gift shops, and a dining area. However its not long before the floors start becoming more increasingly outlandish. One floor might have you exploring a medieval castle while in another floor you will be exploring a full fledged film studio to help a ghost director find his prized megaphone before ending up being cast in his own monster movie. Then you have a floor that somehow contains an entire Egyptian Pyramid riddled with booby traps. I could go on and on but I will keep the rest of the floors a secret so I don’t give everything away. Progression itself is relatively straight forward basically involving you traveling to a new floor solving some puzzles and fighting some ghosts before taking down the boss ghost of the area which generally rewards you with the elevator button to the next floor. If there is one niggle I have its that some floors seem somewhat more underutilized than others. Generally floors tend to alternate between being miniature dungeons and dedicated boss arenas. But I will say the more expansive floors really is where the level design really shines in the puzzle department The film studio floor being a major highlight with how you need to figure out the connections and interplay between various film sets. There were quite a few puzzles that actually did end up stumping me for a bit. Luigi’s focus on greater thinking and using your head is a perfect contrast to Mario’s general focus on platforming and action. The amount of interactivity packed into every area is impressive itself with each floor almost feeling like a miniature physics sandbox begging you to suck and smash everything. And your curiosity and rampant destruction is often rewarded with with piles of treasure or one of the floors 6 gems. The physics model is impressive in itself as smaller objects are easily brushed aside while larger items require your Poltergust to budge. It’s quite a treat especially during heated fight scenes with ghosts as you are slamming an enemy around and inadvertently smashing apart the room even more.
And I can’t help but discuss Luigi’s Mansion 3 without talking about the bosses. These are basically the successors to the portrait ghosts from the first Luigi’s Mansion and I will say without a doubt they are probably Luigi’s Mansion 3′s biggest highlight. These aren’t just glorified mini bosses that you have to take down for a key to another room, no these are full fledged bosses with their own fleshed out personalities and strategies. Each one serves as a perfect bookend to cap off their respective floor. A bumbling security guard with a squirt gun, a concert pianist with serious anger issues, a prehistoric caveman. an Egyptian ghost queen, and a trio of magician sisters are just a handful of the spooks you will encounter during your stay. I must admit I was surprised myself how many of the bosses can pose a decent challenge especially if you don’t know what your doing. These aren’t the typical Mario fare of 3 bops on the head and you’re done. Many of the later bosses especially will really test your knowledge and understanding of all your abilities in many cases forcing you to get creative with the tools you have. With one or two exceptions including a somewhat underwhelming final boss, these are probably some of the most memorable bosses I have seen in a Mario series game to date.
And the graphics, hot damn the graphics. The advancements made in graphics technology over the past 20 years has done wonders for video games in terms of presentation and Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a clear testament to that fact. In an age where developers seem to be trying to push more and more for the most realistic graphics possible, here you have companies like Nintendo to remind people that show that cartoon artstyles can really shine on modern hardware. Dark Moon was a wonderful showcase piece for the 3DS both graphically and technically although at times it felt like the game was a bit too much for the system it was made for. Now being free from the shackles of the weaker 3DS hardware has really allowed Next Level Games to go all out on the presentation and it definitely shows. The amount of care and detail packed into every corner of The Last Resort is second to none helping give every floor its own distinct identity. The games opening moments are a real treat with some pretty gorgeous lighting serving to highlight the initial grand opulence of the The Last Resort before the darkness takes over and the hotel reveals its true form. Its at this time the lighting really starts to shine with plenty of instances of dynamic lighting, shadows and reflections. Luigi’s Mansion 3 may lack the buttery smooth framerate of Super Mario Odyssey but I feel the sacrifice in performance has been justified and balanced out perfectly. Some of the performance warts from Dark Moon have also been lanced with the game maintaining a rock solid 30 frames per second throughout. And I can’t talk about graphics without discussing the animation quality. With Dark Moon Next Level was able to demonstrate how one can really highlight Luigi’s bumbling and cowardly personality and here that expressiveness has been cranked up to 11. I cant help but crack a smile  seeing Luigi shaking in terror at the presence of ghosts or reacting with surprise every time an elevator button magically flies out of his hand and screws itself into place . The bosses themselves are also a highlight with each one being wonderfully animated which helps highlight their personalities and quirks especially in the numerous cut scenes showing their interactions with Luigi which there are plenty of. I admit at times I couldn’t help but feel it was almost like I was looking at a borderline interactive Pixar movie. Each floor also has a ton of its own exclusive items and assets further cementing each floors sense of depth and identity.
There are also plenty of other little details and easter eggs to enjoy as well such as how you communicate with E Gadd using a modified Virtual Boy complete with a joke about the system’s absolute failure or the amount of pizza boxes that litter Mario’s hotel room. Or how about the fact that the boo and gem locator items you can purchase from E Gadd resemble actual Virtual Boy cartridges. And yes, you can in fact pet Polterpup in this game.
In terms of additional content each floor has 6 gems for you to find plus a Boo that appears once the floor has been cleared. The gems themselves  are the source of some of the games strongest puzzles often testing your abilities as well as your awareness of your surroundings. Hunting Boos is relatively similar to how it was in Dark Moon in that you examine the correct object based on the intensity of your controllers vibration then stun the Boo with your Dark Light before slamming it into submission. Both Gems and Boos provide a good incentive to revisit previous floors although the rewards you get for finding them all are relatively underwhelming mainly just being some minor cosmetic items.
To wrap things up there are a few minor gripes I have with the game. For one thing you are unable to remap controller bindings. Now this isn’t a major dealbreaker at all and the controls work fine for the most part but it can make certain actions such as using the dark light awkward since the dark light is mapped to the X button which makes it pretty much impossible to use the light and aim with the right analog stick at the same time. You do have the ability to aim via gyro controls but its mainly limited to just up and down. You can however make things a bit more comfortable by enabling move while poltergusting in the options menu. Some people may also be disappointed by the lack of interconnectedness between floors. Each floor is more or less its own self contained level which means you won’t be encountering any puzzles on one floor that effect the other. There are a few instances during the story when you will be required to revisit a previous floor but they are relatively far and few between. While there are the aforementioned items to purchase from E Gadd they basically amount to gold bones which act as extra lives and Boo and Gem locators which are somewhat pointless since no doubt many people will likely just resort to a guide to find the more obscure Boos and Gems. You will likely feel inclined to avoid spending as much as possible especially since like the first Luigi’s Mansion you are ranked at the end based on how much treasure you found.
On an additional note, I didn’t encounter any major glitches during the game except for a minor bug I ran into where the music suddenly cut out during a boss battle but that was pretty much it.
Ultimately, I find I highly enjoyed my stay in Luigi’s Mansion 3. This is no doubt one of my top picks for Nintendo Game of the Year. It may have taken over a decade but I think Luigi has finally cemented himself firmly and proven he can indeed stand  apart from his brother on his own two feet. If you decide to book a stay at The Last Resort you won’t be disappointed. I think its safe to say Next Level Games has cemented itself firmly as one of Nintendo’s top partner studios and I can only imagine what the future holds next for our favorite green underdog.
In the end I would rate Luigis Mansion 3 an 8/9 out of 10
EDIT Just a quick correction but I found the aiming issue can be in fact easily mitigated as the suction shot, strobulb, and dark light can all be activated with the L and R buttons.
Nintendo Round-Up
Smash Ultimate: As everyone expected, the guy from Dragon Quest 11 made it in, and I”m assuming his shadows are the protags from most of the other DQ games. I’d be more excited if that wasn’t like... 7 more sword characters. E N O U G H. Should have put a slime in instead. Also it really shows you how DQ just has no vested interest in making a lady hero, which is bullshit. Also they ended the conference with Banjo and Kazooie being revealed as a new fighter. I’m happy for them. u v u
DQ11 Switch Port: Oooh, so the pixel areas are you traveling to different DQ worlds? That’s pretty cool.
Luigi’s Mansion 3: It looks cute, and I really like the plunger attachment. But I can’t help but think that while Gooigi is adorable and a nice co-op option, that Nintendo is low key knowingly venturing into more kink areas.
Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics: I Like the Dark Crystal and tactical RPGs, but this looks a little... bad. I hope it’s not, but movie games are usually... yeah.
Link’s Awakening: Fuck the naysayers, the art style is SO GOOD. I don’t... really understand the “make your own dungeon” mechanic. I thought it was going to be so other people can explore your dungeons, but you go in your own? And get treasure? Maybe it’ll grow on me.
Trials of Mana: Looks good! The other 3 games in the series got ported too, which is nice.
Witcher 3 Port
Three Houses: Okay, okay, okay. So there’s like... two timelines? One in the past where you’re teaching everyone and one in the present (?) where everyone is fighting? That’s way cooler than I was expecting. Still hate the dragon loli. Still hope you, as Byleth, can date the other characters in the present timeline.
Resident Evil 5 & 6 Port
No More Heroes 3: YAAAAY! I can’t wait to see what crazy shit is going to come out of this one!
Contra Rogue Corps: I don’t care about Contra, but I’m glad they don’t seem to be taking themselves too seriously.
Daemon x Machina: I still have no idea what this game is about. It looks like Xenoblade, but with more mechs and vehicles. Which could be good, but I still have my reservations.
Panzer Dragoon: The graphics are real nice. I think people were waiting for this, so I’m glad they got it.
Pokemon: Stop. Making. Hot. Characters. What the fuck.
Astral Chain: So the protags are being forced to forge a mental link of sorts with the invading chimeras, which in turn forces the chimera to work for them. That’s hella shady, but it looks like the game is going to address how shitty that is. I’m wondering if you’re going to end up looking for your sibling in the chimera realm a la “I know they’re still alive!” Wonder if they’re going to end up being the big bad after being stuck in the chimera realm.
Empire of Sin: It’s another top down shooter, but as it’s using a 40′s mobster aesthetic it’s infinitely superior.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
Crypt of the Necrodancer:  Cadence of Hyrule
Mario and Sonic At the Olympic Games: Rail grinding like SA2B is honestly all I wanted from this game. Thank you for delivering, Sega and Nintendo.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Finally! I love the new take on the graphics: everything looks so cozy and pick-up-able. If they have a crafting system, that’s one step away from a cooking system SO I’M STILL HOLDING OUT HOPE THAT THERE IS ONE. Pole vaulting looks real neat and better than praying you get a bridge in an advantageous spot. I don’t know how the deserted island angle is going to play out, but I’m excited to see where it goes. Also “nookphone”? That sounds cool! I wonder what mechanics come with that.
Other Games:
Spyro 2
Hollow Knight Silksong
Ni no Kuni 2
Minecraft Dungeons
Elder Scrolls Blades
My Friend Pedro
Doom Eternal
The Sinking City
Wolfenstein Youngblood
Dead By Daylight 2 (?)
Alien Isolation
Crystal Chronicles Port
DQ Builders 2
Some Pixel Game Whose Logo Was Impossible To Read
Just Dance 2020
Catan
Super Lucky’s Tale 2
Dauntless
Super Mario Maker 2
Breath of the Wild Sequel: It looks hella creepy; I’m here for that! I wonder if you can play as Zelda this time around. I can’t imagine why not outside of the devs being boring.
Final Verdict:
💼 for anyone
talk about your muse!
  💼 for a work headcanon
Starlow’s work is pretty carefree and glamorous- all she does is travel, and occasionally help somebody.
Bowser is an incredibly hard worker- always giving 120% to get things done- even if he consistently fails.
Cappy is a child, and has no job, aside from being mario’s hat- which he’s great at.
E gadd is an exceptionally hard worker- the one person who works harder than Bowser. he ends up working so hard that he spends up to a week at a time on minimal food and sleep to get things done.
Gooigi is like. a week old. Their current ‘job’ is watching Luigi’s back should he fall asleep at a bad time, or need a hand with something.
Luigi’s job is a paranormal investigator, and a plumber in case of emergencies. He’s great at both his jobs, even if he doesn’t especially enjoy either of them.
