DPxDC My Brother in the Mirror

Damian doesn't like mirrors.

He never mentioned the fact to other members of the family, but they are detectives and vigilantes, it's their job to be observant. Which, after so many years, becomes a habit.

Damian doesn't actively avoid the mirrors - he has a mirror in his bathroom, he didn't express any discomfort over going into a mirror labyrinth at some carnival they've attended (he expressed disgust over taking part in something so stupid, in his words, but that's a whole another story), and he actually spent a few minutes in front of the funhouse mirrors when no one was looking, watching his own reflection distort in various ways. He also has no problems with his self-image - he doesn't mind pictures of him taken at any time (unless it's Tim, but that's, again, a whole another story), he's drawn a few self-portraits that were rather accurate and he liked them.

He just doesn't like mirrors. For some reason.

His family, both close and extended, never questioned it. They did some gentle research to see if the dislike was caused by some kind of problem Damian was experiencing without telling anyone, but when they found no proof of that, they've just decided it was some quirk of his. Everyone has quirks. Dick doesn't like eating cereal like a normal person, Tim despises sleep, Steph is at war with any color other than purple.

That is, until one day, Tim witnesses Damian sitting in front of a mirror.

He is not even aware of it - the whole family is having a game night, and through some arguments and rearrangements on the couch, Damian ends up sitting on the left side of it, where his back is turned to one of the three mirrors in the room. Tim, who's lost the last round, is slumping in an armchair nearby, pointedly looking away from the screen where Damian and Jason are enthusiastically competing over the first place in Mario Cart. Of course, Tim can't just not watch it since he needs to know their strategies. But turning back around would also be admitting defeat.

The solution? Easy, watch the screen through the mirror.

Which is when he notices it.

Damian in the mirror doesn't act the same as Damian in the room. Out of the corner of his eye, Tim can see the real Damian moving around, shoving Jason with his elbow, fully concentrated on the game, and yelling something. Damian-in-the-mirror is sitting unnaturally still, the back of his head over the couch unmoving.

Tim forgets all about the game when Damian's reflection starts to turn around. Slowly and carefully, eerie in the way the horror movies are, the boy in the mirror turns his head around like an owl, his neck twisting inhumanely.

His eyes are green. Green like the toxic waste, like Jason's madness, like acid in cartoons, like the Waters of Lazarus.

Damian in the mirror smiles, his unblinking, gliwing eyes fixed on Tim, and his teeth are sharp and pointy, and there are too many of them, humans can't smile this wide.

"-im? Tim!" A hand nudges him in the shoulder, and Tim looks away from the mirror, finding Dick standing over him. The noise of the game room returns all at once, and, wait, when did it become quiet for Tim?.. He must have a strange expression on his face because Dick's easy smile falls slightly, and he frowns, "Is everything okay?"

Tim looks back to the mirror, but the green-eyed boy in the mirror is gone, and the mirror only reflects Damian as he is: sitting on the couch.

"Yeah," Tim shakes his head and forces a smile on his lips, "I just zoned out."

"Okay," Dick pats him on the shoulder and gives him the controller, "It's your turn now."

Tim takes the controller and turns around, facing the screen. Tim throws a quick glance at Damian, who had slid down on the couch so his head would not be in the reflection anymore. Tim sees the cold, warning hint to his eye, a clear do not speak of it message.

Tim doesn't like that the mirror is now behind him.

Rq who is nika? Had some art tagged daminika cross my dash and I am Intrigued

Nika alias Flatline, a character created by writer Joshua Williamson and artist Gleb Melnikov, was introduced in Robin(2021) run—where Damian Wayne as the fifth Robin running off home attended the Death tournament on Lazarus Island.

Nika is the first opponent Damian faces on the island and she proceeds to take his first life with her signature move— ripping his heart out with her bare hand (no one actually dies, people would have three lives during the tournament on the island).

She is a Russian metahuman girl and a martial arts fighter, with the power to absorb the skills of people who had died in her hands.

Lazarus Drug, Part Seventeen

Summary:

A brilliant high school chemistry teacher with a terminal illness.

A former smuggler desperate to keep his boyfriend around longer.

A criminal seizing the opportunity to reconnect with his best friend the only way he knows how.

A scam artist down on his luck who gets more than he bargained for.

Stede gets lung cancer. A few months shy of his forty-eighth birthday, he’s told he might not make it to his fiftieth. What happens next is a natural response to this.

Chapter Preview:

The week following the death of the man who provided half of his genetic material, Stede’s in good spirits. They even have the kids over, and Stede manages to pull himself out of the bedroom to come and play Mario Kart in the lounge, and they order takeaway, and it’s all great.

But by the time ten days have passed, Stede’s feeling drained again. He barely has the energy to sit up in bed and Wee John suggests a hospital bed, which Stede absolutely shoots down because no thank you, Ed cuddles at night are a necessity and they picked out this bed together –

Two weeks after his father’s delightful passing, Ed starts acting shifty.

Then one day, Ed has Wee John come over, says, “I’m popping out,” and leaves, just like that.

If he wasn’t spending so much time sleeping, Stede would have more time to worry. As it happens, he dozes for long so, the sun has set by the time he’s woken by Wee John.

“Ed wanted me to wake you up,” Wee John says apologetically, using the many pillows they’ve accumulated to help support him.

Stede sleepily rubs at his eyes and yawns. “That’s fine,” he says. “Where is he?”

“On his way back,” Wee John assures him, double-checking the oxygen before leaving the room.

Sipping at the tea keeps him awake until he hears the telltale sound of the front door opening. Then he hears Ed bounding up the stairs. He appears in the doorway, hair wild, a little out of breath. There’s a nervous energy about him. “Hey,” he says. There’s a backpack slung over his shoulder. “Have a good sleep?” He approaches the bed and puts the bag down before sitting down in the chair he’s started keeping by the bed.

“You know it,” Stede says, peering curiously at the backpack. “Where have you been?” he asks.

Stargate rewatch: 1x14 Singularity

lol, we just love to go to other planets and putting up signs announcing our presence.

Daniel sneezes! So we haven’t forgotten his allergies entirely.

Throughout the show, each member of SG-1 will get at least one Emotional Support Child. This is Sam’s.

However Teal’c is the first contact with Cassandra as he’s sans hazmat suit - I love how gentle he is with her. We only got a glimpse of him with Rya’c in a tense situation, this gives us a better idea of what he’s like as a father.

We know from Cold Lazarus that Sam is an Aunt, and she does have a sweet Auntie vibe in the scenes with Casandra which becomes more maternal as the episode progresses.

I think this is the first time the element the Stargate is made from is identified as naquadah.

Daniel isn’t wearing his glasses in the briefing - I wonder if Michael Shanks got sick of wearing them all the time or the director didn’t want to bother trying to avoid the lights reflecting in them. Perhaps both.

This time it was Mario Azzopardi, who also directed the pilot and several other season 1 episodes.

Not an issue here, since the reflection comes from an onscreen light source.

Oh hey, head of surgery Dr Warner is back, nice continuity.

Daniel also had a coffee cup - I don’t know if this is the first one in a while or if I’ve just been forgetting to look.

It’s another episode on the heels of Hathor where Sam is The Girl, but much more successful as there’s actually some character work going on.

Daniel outside reading a book waiting for Sam is very sweet, but he uses a piece of paper to mark his place instead of a bookmark like an absolute savage.

Sam: “I just - I want to do this” Daniel: “Okay. But I guess what I’m saying is that you don’t have to do this alone.” Their friendship!

The first season is full of randos in the briefing room.

Our first mention of Nirrti, although identified as male by Teal’c - whether he was wrong or at one point Nirrti had a male host is undetermined.

Nirrta is a Hindu deity that is either male or female depending on the scripture. The name is derived from the Sanskrit Nirrti which means decay, and is probably why they were chosen for this episode.

Gut wrenching performance by Amanda Tapping. Also Katie Stuart as Cassandra - she knows exactly what’s happening when Sam leaves her in the bunker, red tag of death still attached to her clothes.

Sam guesses that the bomb isn’t going to go off, but ultimately she goes back down because she made a promise to Casandra not to leave her, and couldn’t live with herself if she broke it.

In Thor's Hammer, Daniel asked Sam if she'd ever had a feeling that made no logical sense but turned out to be right - this isn't quite that since Sam did have a reason to believe the bomb wouldn't go off, but this the start of Sam starting to trust her instinct and made big logical leaps that inexplicably pay off.

This will get her into trouble later on as risks don’t always pay off, but will also allow her to make incredible achievements and snap victory from the jaws of defeat more than once.

Compare Sam in CotG, skeptical of Daniel's claim that the Stargate was part of a network because they’d run permutations with no result, to here where she has an idea but trusts her gut that it’s right, not necessarily the evidence.

Cassandra’s cover story about being from Toronto is funny seeing as the Stargate universe is basically Space Canada.

"Whereas problem solving is aimed at altering the real environment, reappraisal only alters the person's subjective construction of the environment.

The literature points out several reappraisal strategies.

The most common is what Lazarus and Folkman (1984) call focusing on the positive aspects of a mismatch.

It involves the use of selective attention on positive information and the denial of negative aspects of reality, as well as such other cognitive maneuvers as thinking positive thoughts, making positive self-statements, using humor, finding side benefits, imagining worse events, making positive social comparisons, refusing to dwell on the problem, and appraising the events as purposeful and meaningful.

A wide range of avoidance strategies is found in the literature.

One large group consists of cognitive procedures designed to prevent the intrusion of threat-related thoughts and affects into consciousness.

Among these procedures, one can find suppression of thoughts about the threat; distancing by thinking about task-irrelevant matters or engaging in distracting activities; wishful thinking by daydreaming, imagining a better place and time, or waiting for a miracle; active forgetting or putting the problems out of mind; and the numbing or inhibition of emotion.

These two coping strategies differ, however, in the extent and the consequences of the distortion.

Whereas reappraisal entails a partial denial of the threatening aspects of the problem situation, avoidance strategies entail a total denial of the mismatch along with complete behavioral and cognitive disengagement from the situation.

Moreover, whereas reappraisal facilitates active confrontation with the problem, avoidance prevents any kind of active confrontation.

In my terms, reappraisal reflects optimism regarding the possibility of resolving a mismatch and a cognitive means for maintaining this orientation.

In contrast, avoidance reflects pessimism about one's chances of resolving the mismatch and a conviction that the only solution and the only way to reduce distress is to avoid any confrontation with the problem.

The use of avoidance coping has also been found to be inversely related to health and positively linked to physical complaints, self-reported pain, and a variety of disorders, including migraine, high blood pressure, problems in metabolic control of diabetes patients, eating disorders, drinking, heart disorder, and asthma, as well as to cortisol level.

In this context, it is important to underline Pennebaker's work, which demonstrated that inhibition of thoughts related to traumatic events results in an increase of ANS activity and psychosomatic diseases."

Seph/Zack (age appropriate, ie they are both adults) - we all knew this was coming; FFVII has taken over my life and I’m not even mad. Another TRAGIC relationship that I wish we got to see more of (even from a platonic perspective!)
