Lula Rallies Supporters Seeking Outright Victory in Brazil Vote

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is stepping up efforts to sway supporters of candidates who are trailing in Brazil’s presidential race in a last-minute attempt to clinch an outright victory next Sunday.

The leftist leader, who pollsters say is closer than ever to winning on Oct. 2, will receive the explicit backing of several Brazilian artists on Monday, part of a strategy that has placed him as the head of a broad coalition against President Jair Bolsonaro. Last week, he got the support of eight former presidential candidates. 

“I’m working to win in the first round,” Lula said during the meeting with former candidates, including ex-Central Bank chief and Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles and ex-Environment Minister Marina Silva. “Every gesture I make is intended to show that I want to win.”

An outright victory would mark a resounding comeback by the former president, who had his reputation tarnished by corruption allegations that landed him in jail in 2018, before having his sentence annulled by the nation’s top court on technical grounds. Since the country’s return to democracy, only Fernando Henrique Cardoso won elections in the first round, both in 1994 and 1998.

My experience making a short film.

Fundação Oriente held the first Filmmaking Workshop For Young Amateurs in which the participants were to create a 3-6 minute film in groups of 3-4 people. The workshop was led by Nalini Elvino de Souza, a documentary filmmaker, and each team was meant to create a short film of 3 to 6 minutes featuring a Portuguese element. Participants would meet every Saturday from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, at Fundação Oriente in Fontainhas, Panjim.

The workshop began on the 5th of August, where participants learned about the history of cinema, the first day also covered topics such as framing and camera movements. Many of the participants also spent this time learning about each other and deciding on their teams, we then shot basic clips and images unrelated to our movie to fully grasp the information we had learned.

Our second day was discussing our audience, finalising groups, and figuring out the plot of each film. The groups would work on their final project outside of workshop hours and would use each Saturday as a briefing to describe the process and convey how much has been done. Advice and possible criticism would be given by our instructors; Mrs. Elvino de Souza also enlisted the help of Marina Nédio and Maria Meireles who would assist throughout the course.

Our third and fourth Saturdays were spent planning the movie and working out logistics– we would speak about our movies and design our posters, part of the third saturday was spent at Sunaparanta, looking at an exhibition. All shooting was done outside of workshop hours, but the teams would discuss locations and inform our instructor.

The fifth saturday was spent discussing budgeting and how one can predict their films budget in preparation for next week. The last day of the workshop was pitching our short films to Gasper D’Souza, a colleague of Nalini’s. Each group presented their film both as practice for gaining funding, but also in preparation for the premiere the following week. Both Mrs. Elvino de Souza and Mr. Gasper D’Souza gave feedback on the films’ posters and asked questions on the motifs.

The actual filming we did was almost at the end of the workshop due to time constraints and other commitments my team had made. We filmed in South Goa, using borrowed cameras in order to make the end product look a little more professional. Our actors were friends from school, a young couple with good chemistry that would carry over into the silent film.

In the end, each film was distinct from the others as each group used different types of film, the lineup consisted of a silent film, a documentary, and a thriller. The three groups showcased their films at a showing, open to the public, held on the 16th of September 2023 where the winner was announced.

When asked about whether a workshop like this would be held again, Paulo Jorge Da Silva Gomes, the head of Fundação Oriente stated, ‘We have decided to create this activity, firstly to give the youth the opportunity to develop their skills in creating and editing movies, secondly to create a large network in this area because we never know the future, if you want to go ahead in this area, or not. This was the first edition, in general I think that it went very well. From zero to ten, probably my note is seven,it’s a good note. We need to improve some aspects like the way to organise what we can do better in the second edition, probably increase the hours of the course. Second, give you more time to create the movies and documentaries, this is the second thing but we’ll see. Now we will collect the feedback of the participants, it’s important to collect the feedback of participants, and for sure we’ll have the second edition.’

Former foes endorse Lula, reinforce bid for "tactical vote"

Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received the support of multiple former presidential candidates on Monday — including politicians from both sides of the political spectrum. 

After former Environment Minister Marina Silva pledged her support for Lula last week, former Central Bank president Henrique Meirelles and former Senator Cristovam Buarque have joined the increasingly broad front backing the center-left candidate’s presidential bid. Both men served in government during Lula’s time in office but had become his political adversaries in recent years.

Mr. Meirelles ran for president in 2018, garnering just 1.2 percent of the vote. Mr. Buarque served as Lula’s first Education Minister (lasting just over a year in office) and ran against Lula for the presidency in 2006. He received 2.6 percent of the vote. 

In his bid to unseat President Jair Bolsonaro, Lula has talked of building a “broad front for democracy.” In an event on Monday, his broad front included members of the far-left and a former banker.
