Calina Lawrence is an artist and activist who was born and raised within the Suquamish Nation, a Native American tribe located in Washington. As an artist she uses her music and spoken word to bring awareness to her native culture and the preservation of Suquamish traditions as well as addressing social injustices like police brutality, suicide prevention, violence against women, and nature preservation.

In 2019 Lawrence released ʔəshəliʔ ti txʷəlšucid, translated to Lushootseed is Alive, a song written and preformed in her native Lushootseed language. Lushootseed is an endangered language with currently only five native speakers, worldwide (Golla, Goddard, Campbell, Mithun, Mixco). New generations of Suquamish people, like Calina Lawrence, are working to preserve and bring this language back.

The Suquamish Tribe is originally from the Pacific Northwest, a population who lived off the land as “people of the clear salt water,” they were expert fisherman, canoe builders, and basket weavers. In the 1850’s white settlers came and began to purchase their land through the Treaty of Point Elliott, and the Suquamish people were relocated. The tribe was able to resist many forms of assimilation, but from 1900-1920 mandates were put in place to force Suquamish children to attend Indian Boarding Schools. It was here in these schools, where their native language was no longer allowed, that it began to disappear altogether. “For decades, federal Indian policy, which aimed at forced assimilation, required children to be removed from their homes and reservation communities, and enrolled in boarding schools, where many were punished or beaten for speaking their Native languages. As a result, generations of Native people either never learned their language, or lost their fluency in it, and many links to traditional culture were broken” (Crosscut)

In week two of our class we learned about the events that happened at Wounded Knee, and horrible treatment of Native Americans after white westerners came and forced assimilation on them. It was through this assimilation that many traditional cultures were lost. Calina Lawrence is well aware of the treatment that Native Americans have gone through and is working hard to bring awareness to it, and protect her culture and native language. She said of her work “It’s the main tool of ethnocide and genocide, is to attack the language of a specific landscape, of a specific people, right? And you will talk to so many different indigenous peoples across this continent, across the world, right? That says that language belongs to the land and, because we say we are of the land, that we belong to the land, so we belong to a language” (Teodros). Throughout our class we have learned that representation of cultures is important, and Lawrence is working to represent her culture through her music and activism work.

Texas Jim Robertson Born:  February 7, 1909 Died:  November 11, 1966 

Texas Jim Robertson was a native of Texas as his name might suggest. He started off singing when his aunt invited him out to Charlotte, NC for a visit when he was about sixteen years old. While there, he got a job singing the old western songs. It wasn't too long before his fame spread and he was offered a stint with the NBC network. While he was in New York, he was not only singing, but also taking on drama roles on the radio. RCA Victor signed him to a recording contract. In 1937, Marianne Holliday became Jim's wife. Around the beginning of World War II, they became the parents to a little girl, Lucy Holliday Robertson. The World's Fair in 1939 saw Texas Jim as a popular act with the Ford Exhibit. Initially, Texas Jim was turned away by the Army to serve because he was rather thin for his height. But undismayed, he later was accepted by the U.S. Marines. While with them, he also entertained the troops while still going through his boot camp regimen. His war service included serving in the Pacific Theatre and he ended up in Omura, Japan, which was less than 25 miles from Nagasaki, where the second atom bomb landed. While at Omura, he was named Chief Announcer and entertainer for the Kyushu Network. He was honorably discharged in August 1946 and promptly headed home to Nyack, New York. In addition to the recordings listed, his RCA Victor releases also included such songs as: "I Heard The Angels Weep", "I'm So Low", "Slipping Around", "Wedding Bells", "I Don't Want No More Of Army Life", "If You've Got The Money, I've Got The Time".

SON OF A BEACH

If we had reviewed NBC's Sunset Beach upon its debut, it would have been lacerated for its stunning incompetence and thorough pointlessness. But the show currently airing isn't the show that premiered 19 months ago. Yes, this Aaron Spelling production is still lavishly mounted, majestically hyped and studded with superhuman specimens seemingly sculpted by da Vinci. But it did not do what it was supposed to do, namely, lure gazillions of young, previously untapped advertiser-desirable viewers to daytime TV and, in the process, reenergize the soap opera genre. In fact, SB has wound up the lowest rated of all 11 daytime soaps and, according to NBC, is a possible candidate for cancellation. But something quite marvelous has happened as a result: This show is now behaving like an unwanted, illegitimate child. It is incorrigible. It is pulling itself up by its own bootstraps and surviving on raw nerve and gut instinct. It is demanding to be noticed. And we must confess, this is working like a charm.

You have to love a show that will try anything to get our attention (high-speed freeway chases; a July 17 earthquake that was a scary, technological marvel; and, coming August 3, a rip-off of "The Poseidon Adventure"), but what really endears us to SB is its willingness to own up to its mistakes. The majority of its original cast members, many of whom were ghastly, have either been fired or whipped into shape, some miraculously so. Susan Ward, initially unwatchable as Meg, is now a real contender; Clive Robertson, who started out being merely OK as Ben, now has superstar written all over him. At first, SB tried to get away without core families (mandatory for any successful sudser), and that has been duly remedied. The writing is vastly improved, sometimes quite moving and often wickedly inventive. The writers even managed to breathe new life into the done-to-death evil-twin plot.

With Dominique Jennings (Virginia), Jason George (Michael), Russell Curry (Tyus) and the very dishy Sherri Saum (Vanessa), SB boasts a vital, intriguing African-American contingent, something most other soaps can't claim. Other thrilling talents include Eddie Cibrian (Cole), Randy Spelling (Sean), Nick Kiriazis (Antonio) and Elizabeth Alley (the Linda Tripp-inspired Melinda). Even bit players soar, most notably Margarita Cordova as Mama Torres, Mariann Aalda as the hideously deformed Mrs. Hart and Bonnie Hellman as snarky Nurse Stacey, who intrudes at all the wrong moments. Where SB still falls short is with its leads: Sam Behrens as creep lawyer Gregory Richards and Lesley-Anne Down as his boozy ex-wife, Olivia. The former lacks fire and surprise (odd, considering he was so dynamic on General Hospital); the latter gets by on big hair and the kind of spacey, melodramatic performance that used to pass for acting on Dynasty. We encourage SB executive producer Gary Tomlin to continue kicking butt. Your show is on a roll, and you can't stop now.
