“Have a brilliant Christmas everyone! Happy Chrissy! Don’t eat and drink too much! I know I will, but that’s no excuse for you. I hope you enjoy all your presents and I hope you remember the true meaning of Christmas, which is love and peace and being good to each other - so HAPPY CHRISTMAS!”

john and paul in rishikesh, india (1968) by paul saltzman
PAUL SALTZMAN REMEMBERS: “John and Paul were strumming their Martin acoustic guitars, singing fragments of songs, musically meandering through some of my favorites: "Michelle", "All You Need is Love", "Eleanor Rigby", and others. I got my camera and after taking a few pictures through the chainlink fence, I opened the gate and joined them.”

“The song unveiled for us this evening was tentatively called “In The Life Of”—soon to be retitled “A Day In The Life.” It was in a similar vein to “Strawberry Fields Forever”—light and dreamy—but it was somehow even more compelling. I was in awe; I distinctly remember thinking, Christ, John’s topped himself! As Lennon sang softly, strumming his acoustic guitar, Paul accompanied him on piano. A lot of thought must have gone into the piano part, because it was providing a perfect counterpoint to John’s vocal and guitar playing.”

paul mccartney - paintings
PAUL: I was just sketching, blocking it in quite roughly, and I was going to make another character there, the first sketch was done in the blue, to get the composition -- but as I started to fill in a little bit, I got a very strong feeling that was John Lennon's face. The one with the face on the clothes, sitting down. It had a look that was John Lennon. Just in a moment, it reminded me -- it may not remind anyone else of John Lennon, but that for me it reminded me of him. [...] When John used to draw, that would be a typical face on the right profile. SUTTNER: Do you know his drawings? PAUL: John's drawings? Yes, I know them quite well, of course. Well, I saw him do a lot of them, and I obviously saw all his books and stuff. So that became the fun of it then --- and it was now John, so now the picture centered on him. So instead of the yellow person becoming central, it suddenly all seemed to me that everyone was now focusing on this John Lennon figure.
And obviously, as John is a very strong, important person in my life, I always enjoy getting an image of him. It's like if you dream of someone, if you dream of your father and he is dead, in your dream you meet him again, and if it is a good dream, it is a wonderful moment because for two seconds you are with him again and you don't think, Oh, he's dead, I can't enjoy this moment. You accept it. So in paintings, this sometimes happens to me, and this was a bit like that, meeting John again, drawing his face.

“i think that what i really enjoy is actually applying the paint, putting the paint on the canvas. just the act of putting the paint on the canvas is enough sometimes for me.”

“That's a great colour shot. John, Cynthia, Maureen and I were on holiday in Tobago. I think that lady is getting the spines out of John's foot because he trod on a sea urchin -- who knew they were dangerous?”
