Reposted from @marianeibrahimgallery Lorraine O'Grady for @harpersbazaarus, the Possibility Issue (April 2024): "The Audacity of Lorraine O'Grady"
"Her first solo show at Mariane Ibrahim, "The Knight, or Lancela Palm-and-Steel," opens April 10 at the gallery's Windy City flagship and will feature a character, the Knight, that was introduced in "Both/And" with a set of "announcement cards" titled "Announcement of a New Persona (Performances to Come!)”… Like so much of O’Grady’s work, the Knight combines her predilection for mischief with her continued focus on hybridity and the constraints and contradictions of identity.”
Lorraine shares, "I always believed. The question was, did anybody else believe?...But I knew I was right."
A special thanks to @samiranasr for the support!

Each artist is distinguished by the diverse and complex relationships that run through their varied geographical, political, and gendered narratives. Ravelled Threads is organized in collaboration with Mariane Ibrahim. The exhibition will open Thursday, June 21 from 6-8pm. A number of the artists will be present for the opening. Ravelled Threads features a diverse roster of emerging, mid-career and established artists including #IgshaanAdams #JoëlAndrianomearisoa #AyanFarah #AboubakarFofana #AlexandraKarakashian #AbdoulayeKonaté #LawrenceLemaoana #SenzeniMarasela #ZohraOpoku and #AthiPatraRuga. . 📷: Lawrence Leamaoana , embroidery on kanga textile, 2018, Textile, 155x115cm Courtesy: Afronova Gallery, Johannesburg and Sean Kelly, New York . #RavelledThreads #SeanKellyNY #MarianeIbrahim @marianemia @lawrence_lemaoana #johannesburg #southafrica #arttextile #textileart #politicalart #kanga #kwezi #womanism #dailyfeminism #resistanceart #protestart #artivism

🎨#ArtIsAWeapon "Marsha, 2021." Oil on canvas. #Artist @peter_uka Peter Uka Courtesy of Mariane Ibrahim @marianeibrahimgallery (reposted) #CHICAGO Upcoming Exhibition Peter Uka: Longing November 13 - December 18, 2021 Mariane Ibrahim Gallery 437 N Paulina St, Chicago, IL 60622 We are pleased to announce the gallery's inaugural exhibition with Peter Uka. The show marks the artist's first show with the gallery and in the United States... Novelist Zadie Smith commented that “historical nostalgia” was a sentiment not “available” to black people: “I can’t go back to the fifties because life in the fifties for me is not pretty, nor is it pretty in 1320 or 1460 or 1580 or 1820 or even 1960 in this country, very frankly.” The large-scale oil paintings exude notions of nostalgia, a gaze on spaces long forgotten. The works timeless ability arise from a query, how do we document a history that was unwritten, and only told orally? Of historical memories recounted and not crystallized. Moments in time are captured, each representing a chamber of reflection, all solely painted from memory. Peter Uka, Marsha, 2021. Oil on canvas. 70 7/8 x 70 7/8 in, 180 x 180 cm.
