Caroline Rhode Downing 🤎

Caroline Downing (26) grew up in the suburbs of Charleston, South Carolina with her older brother, Eric, and younger sister, Kaia. She was quite reserved as a child, preferring to bury herself in books and daydreaming rather than rambunctious play like her siblings. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in English language and literature, she has been working as an editor at a local publishing house for several years.

Her parents, Richard and Maria, are owners of an award winning winery in Charleston and a renowned equestrian center in the Scottish Highlands. Her brother, Eric, was positioned to oversee the building of the family’s equestrian center in town when he tragically passed away in a fatal car accident last summer.

Life for the Downings haven’t been the same since. Though a semblance of normalcy and routine have returned, each member has been on their own journey with grief and healing. This experience of loss has brought them closer than ever and as the season changes, they hope to commemorate Eric’s memory by completing his passion project and finding gratitude in simple things.

The Emperor's 30 Year Jubilee | The Trooping

We at the Pierreland News Network welcome those from around the Simverse to a sunny Windensen to join us in celebrating the 30 years of Emperor David's reign. Family is at the core of todays celebrations specifically the Valois family and the family of Europesim, so we will see some fan favorites here! The Guards of the Imperial Household are standing at the ready at the Parade Square where we see our first arrivals!

The Grand Ducal Family of Bordeaux has arrived and it marks the first appearance of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess's daughter! The parents have kept their children shielded from the public, citing that they wish for them to have normal childhoods. The young Lady Artemis Bordeaux-Carlisle walked ahead of her mother and older brothers under the watchful eye of her father. The Emperor's middle adopted son has always held a special place in the family and currently undertakes duties as a Councilor of State. @royalhouseofcarrington

Next to arrive are TIM the Emperor and Empress of the French, both newly inducted into the Order of the Lion. The Empress stuns in a beautiful purple coat dress that shows off her baby bump while the young Emperor looks dapper in military uniform. The Franco-Pierrelander friendship has been strong for centuries but has flourished under Emperor David's reign with his close friendship with the late Napoleon IV and mentorship role with Napoleon V, making it a crowning achievement. @empiredesimparte

Next to arrive are TRH the Duchess of Rothsey and Prince Magnus of Argyll. Princess Hortense, wife to the Emperor's nephew, paid tribute to Paradisian designers wearing an ethereal pastel number. Meanwhile, Prince Magnus wears the uniform of the Royal Scots Household Cavalry. The young Prince has been seen around Pierreland alongside Princess Magdalena of Lunaria and has captured the fascination of Pierrelanders. Meanwhile, the Duchess is beloved by Pierrelanders as many recall some iconic moments with her greeting Emperor David as a young toddler or giggling at a rambunctious Crown Prince Louis as a child.

Next to arrive is some of the Royal Family of Charleston. King Henrik was accompanied by his heir, Crown Princess Aurora who paid tribute to the hosts with a light blue dress. Behind them are Prince Damien and Princess Brigitta, the two siblings are the biological children of Prince Michael, Grand Duke of Burgundy. Prince Michael is the cousin of the Emperor through his great great grandfather, Louis, Duke of Valois. The two cousins are reportedly close despite their age gap. @thecharlestonroyalfamily

Next to arrive are TIM Queen Vivianna II and King Philippe of the Ionian Union, rounding out the family of Europesim in attendance. The pair reportedly share a warmer relationship with the Empress, given her attendance at their nuptials, while many remember the whirlwind brief romance between the now Queen and Crown Prince Louis. Queen dazzles in a light peach number while the King opted for chic Franco-Ionian tailoring with his suit and tie. @funkyllama

Meanwhile, we see that the Emperor is riding with the Imperial Household Cavalry down the Gran Boulevard with the Emperor wearing the uniform of the Imperial Household Guards. He is joined on horseback by family members that are military affiliated, particularly past, current, and future service. To the left, HRH the Duke of Rothsey rides wearing the uniform of the Scottish Royal Household Cavalry which is his active military unit. Behind his father is the Crown Prince, wearing the uniform of the Pierreland Imperial Military Academy and next to him is Prince Michael of Charleston, Grand Duke of Burgundy, who previously served in an Imperial Household Guard unit till his marriage to King Henrik of Charleston.

Behind them in an open carriage is HIM the Empress, and TIH Princess Maria Aisha and Prince Henri. The mother and daughter opted for Pierreland blue ensembles while Prince Henri opted for an off white suit.

Back at the Parade Square, we see that national favorites, TRH Crown Prince Nicholas and Crown Princess Minerva of Lunaria have arrived alongside their daughters, TRH Princesses Magdalena, Alexandrine, and Odessa. Crown Princess Minerva formerly served as Pierreland's ambassador to the nation and during that time, fell in love with the Crown Prince in what many dub the love story of the century with many Pierrelanders still calling to their example of devotion to each other and their causes when talking about relationships. The Quinns spend much time in Pierreland visiting the Crown Princess's parents and the immediate Imperial family due to the close ties between the Empress and Crown Princess Minerva and Crown Prince Louis and Princess Magdalena. @simsroyallegacy

Many are shocked to see HRH Prince Magnus back outside, but he seemed to have wanted to greet his girlfriend bad enough to broach protocol. He also met the Crown Prince and Crown Princess, with Prince Nicholas having an intense conversation with him as they enter the building.

And the last to arrive is TM King Alexander III & Queen Marie Christine of the Scots. The Queen is wearing Pierreland Designer Francis Marc while the King is wearing the summer uniform of the Imperial Artillery, where he is a honorary colonel. Queen Marie Christine is the younger sister of the Emperor and the two royal families spend many happy summers together.

The Imperial Party arrives at the Parade Square with those on horseback going to inspect the soldiers prior to the march past while those in the carriage take their places on the viewing platform.

Meanwhile Guests watch from the windows as the troops begin to troop past their Emperor.

Character Analysis: The Seven (Riordanverse)

Each of the seven have issues:

Percy is suicidal as in most of his POVs there is a large lack of regard for his life, multiple times stating he believes people will be better off without him and even stating he wanted to drown in TLF and SoM. On top of that... Physically abused as a kid. C'mon we all remember and hate Gabe. I hate how his entire character was literally forgotten about, despite the fact that an abusive parent should stick with a kid for quite some time.

Here's my headcanon for that. It wasn't forgotten, just not acknowledged. We all remember in the earlier books Percy was pretty much apologizing for doing anything right. That's a trait instilled in people who are used to getting abuse for doing anything. I could just be reading into it too much, and I probably am, but it's the only thing that reassures me that this wasn't forgotten about.

In fact I don't think Rick really understood the implications of what Gabe's actions would have done to Percy as he stated that in the upcoming show Timm Sharp's performance as Gabe had everyone laughing and I think that's the only thing I am slightly apprehensive about in the show.

His lack of self-worth is honestly probably a result of Gabe and I feel so angry that it was never touched.

Annabeth has abandonment issues as nearly everyone she has ever loved has left her at some point. Her mother disowned her after TLH, her father chose her mortal family over her and ignored her as she grew up, Luke betrayed her and Thalia joined the Hunters. There was even that time when Chiron was going to leave for good in SoM. That was why she was so threatened by Rachel. Because she was taking away the one good person left who stood by her.

Yes I just ignored Grover. I realize that.

Jason suffers from image issues as he was put on a pedestal from day one, even as a child just because his daddy was a king. He does NOT get enough credit my man suffered as a kid. This was probably one of the only ones where Rick actually tried to address the problem and eventually he found his calling and grew past that. Then Trials of Apollo came along. *Ugly sobbing intensifies*

Piper suffers from neglect from her father who didn't have enough time to spend with her and from her mother leaving. Even when her mother was there in Charleston, she paid much more attention to Hazel and Annabeth than she did to her own daughter.

Leo... Where to start? The kid was homeless and slept in sewers. That on its own is just sad but even more, he believed he was the reason his mom was dead. He was shunned by his own flesh and blood and was forced to retreat behind the comfort of his machines and even then, Festus was brutally taken away by those lasers. Rick really just pulled out the most brutal, sad backstory for this kid ever.

Frank is one of the less traumatized ones but still, a dead mother and having to watch his home burn down with his grandmother inside? Not good.

Hazel... Pulled out of time into unfamiliar circumstances. Having to deal with the knowledge that her childhood friend moved away, thinking that it was his fault that Hazel left (Sammy and the diamond). Having to deal with the knowledge that she was part of the reason one of the giants had risen. Forcibly exiling herself from Elysium into Asphodel just so her mom wouldn't suffer. And speaking of her mom... Maria Levesque's treatment of Hazel, acting as if she were a curse and not a living child, making her sympathize with the Minotaur of all creature, would leave lasting scars on all of them.

The most consolation I can get for this is that it looks like most of them have managed to move past all of this. Jury is still out on Annabeth and Percy as I have not read CotG yet but I'm hopeful.

Except Jason. They just had to completely overhaul him by ripping away the relationship he had with Piper, which didn't need to happen, right before he died.

My reason for not liking the Jasiper break up is the fact that, the argument that they were forced into the relationship happened at the wrong time. This was after they had done a fresh start of the end of BoO. Anytime before that I can understand, but at that point? There was no reason. Then they just had to kill my boy. RICK I SWEAR TO ALL THE GODS IF THIS HAPPENS TO ANYONE IN THE WRATH OF THE TRIPLE GODDESS AND WHATEVER THE FINAL BOOK OF THIS NEW TRILOGY IS I WILL FIND YOU!

Tommy Pham was born during the 4 year disappearance of Phillip Graves in Charleston, South Carolina to a distraught Annabelle Pham after a brief tryst with a stranger. During the times his mother couldn't care for him, little Tommy stayed with his Uncle RJ or his grandparents.

When his mother married his stepfather, 3 year old Tommy had some trouble adjusting to him, but Graves would regard Tommy as his son just as much as his younger brother was, Phillip Jr.

Tommy and Junior's bond strengthened as they grew up, with the upbeat and sensitive Junior under the protection of his tougher older brother.

Both Tommy and Junior followed in their parent's footsteps and joined the army and eventually the Shadow Company, each brother talented in their own right: Tommy was a fighter, and Junior was a leader.

When his mother goes missing on a mission with the 141, his stepfather would refuse to divulge information on her whereabouts, only assuring him they were looking for her with little update.

Frustrated and with little faith in the Shadow Company, Tommy would turn to the Taskforce 141 for answers: specifically his godmother, Lt. Isobel Williams.

Tommy, now under the tutelage of the 141, is as unpredictable and crazy on the battlefield like his mother, but what he lacks in stealth (due to his height) he makes up with in brute force.

He takes himself a bit seriously and has the "patience of a Saint", and tends to hold his feelings close only to unleash when he's on the field later. While he and his stepfather have a somewhat strained relationship after he left the Shadow Company, he and Junior have become closer on their mutual goal to find their mother.

BIOGRAPHY

Picturesque is the Priestley household; a townhouse in a popular, inexpensive area of Fort Myers, Florida and a kind of family that always wants to be doing something active; moving, running – causing noise; a ruckus; chaos in every avenue. There are so many of them that it seems impossible to avoid, Alexander and Emilia Priestley liked the idea of a big family from when they were youths and they had acquired secure enough jobs, and financials to actually run it without too many hitches. (A hefty inheritance from Emilia’s grandfather in Barcelona that mysteriously left her a sum that seems suspiciously high for a man who appeared as an ordinary businessman, definitely helped with that.) It was nearly every half a decade, there would be a new Priestley child; equally as full of energy as the last.

Tomás was second-born of the Priestley’s, only outranked by his older brother Lorenzo. He never felt like the younger one considering they were all free souls; unrestricted in the sense that they saw their parents one at a time, usually – a twenty-four-hour shift for their father and an in-and-out mother who knew more about her current and future court cases that her firstborn’s favourite colour. But, that was OK. They had enough love and devotion between them and it’s almost biological how wild they could be – Tomás could even swear that everyone in Fort Myers knew at least one Priestley.

Throughout all that, the sweet perfection of the family that seemed just as kind behind closed doors as they were out of it, kids boarding down the sidewalks of the beaches, running rampant in coffee shops because there’s more than life than just the rules and the staling of the ordinary. Tomás and Lorenzo noticed it first when they’d go to bed at night and there’s a sound that’s not so joyous and pleasant coming from their parents room – the arguments that eventually Anna-Maria caught wind of, denied and unsettled the household despite how every morning, the façade is upheld and there’s nothing wrong in the eyes of the Priestley parents when they offer white smiles and hugs at the dinner table; it’s too perfect.

Because it’s not.

And Enzo went off to pursue law at Charleston – just like his mother; made the following in footsteps first and left Tomás in the limbo of how he wasn’t made to be a lawyer; didn’t work well with the mathematics for starters, the eldest brother of the chaotic duo went for the organised route and left the second of them simply wanting to write stories; is the only one absorbing the news from the television on the kitchen side when they’re having breakfast.

The world got a little darker in the news outlets. Channel changes to HBO and beyond; the fantastical is a nice escape, sometimes. How awful it is to feel so alone in a family sprawling with characters.

The little doodles on the napkins in restaurants at family dinners; comic strips at first. Listening ears perking up as he eavesdropped on gossip about the town like he was just there as witness and reporter. Did you hear about it? they were mauled by a wildebeest, I swear it. He liked the adventure. And it fitted what he wanted – he could see himself doing that, being a writer, editor-in-chief and more– the dream is there. As it remained to be when he started his final year of school, stayed ever close to his sister Anna-Maria who also, to his quiet approval seemed to want to go into something in the cookery world; open a restaurant; head chef, a kind of left-wing decision that whilst he knows his parents would never reject (because they’ve always been taught to pursue dreams) but perhaps doubt in silence.

Except — Tomás realised that when he was a little older, his mother making business trips to Spain, familial things she’d said, were getting increasingly longer, the arguments at least fewer at night. But perhaps, because there was an absence there; a hole in the bubbliness and energy in the townhouse, the bustling of feet barrelling down three flights of stairs is sound forever engrained in the man’s mind.

He misses it. He's busy writing stories and handing out free comic strips on the street to get his name out there. Talk to me, I want to hear the stories; the spooks and the things that go bump in the night, tell me, tell me.

His application for his degree at Tideview University came back as accepted. (he's chosen it — despite being across the country — for its notoriety of being a hotspot; disappearances; unsolved crimes records; history rich with the mythical and the legendary)

That was both the greatest and worst day of his life.

And not just because it meant moving away from his family and making his own life outside of them. Hanna — one of his younger sisters had been involved in a crash that left her in a coma. Same day — almost the same hour— everything that felt good and exciting about that day is clouded in a grey. It drowned every single Priestley, one by one as they all found their way to the hospital in bursts — dragged out of work, of school. Easily determined by an array of cars that blocked the front entrance for a little longer than helpful just so they could be first there.

Tomás attempted to delay his travel plans to Port Leiry, but, like most relentless business moguls, he was told straight that it would jeopardise not only his college but his internship despite extenuating circumstances. Not even his comatose sister was a good enough excuse. It broke him — gutted him a little deeper than he wanted when he packed those bags. This time, because his parents had told him to; the same ones that didn’t seem all that enthused about his choices, encouraged him to go for his dreams because that’s what his parents did.

Hanna was in the best care, under the best doctors and whether he stayed or left, he couldn’t change a thing.

But it still hurt, and it’s an irony that brings the family closer; they were always relatively tight knit, but one Priestley down means that they all go down, Tomás hates putting his phone down for both business purposes, and in case he ever needs to take that call.

He hopes he never has to.

He's got a paper to get a footing on, a masters programme to get through and a lot of theories to promote. (A fanatic they say) A writer, he argues; a truthsayer.

Port Leiry isn’t what he imagined. Within the first week, he's seeing shadows in his periphery — made to feel a little insane as he scribbles and scrawls. He bothers the cops more times than a civilian should. So many accidents in the city — yet no court cases, or lawsuits that equate to the same numbers. His mother taught him something about law; there's something wrong with Port Leiry. It's a little too chaotic (but so is he — and Hanna's state affects him more than he'll ever confess) He's seen what real trauma is that he won’t let the scoffs and mutters about his underground paper distributing — the fact that nobody quite takes him seriously (yet) — deter him from achieving his goals. Too enthused to be there, too fragile in the way he’s leaving doodles on executives' desks (breaking into the biggest newspaper company in the city) sliding along the corridors when he drops paper on trays and files away in tiny compact rooms barefooted (because brogues kill his feet) when nobody’s looking and wears the grin like it’s nobody’s business.

Can’t knock the guy down because he’s accustomed to getting back up and getting through it. He doesn't work for Port Leiry's paper. He's not on the payroll, but he's using their printers when nobody's around; a dozen copies of his own self-published paper (The Leiry Conspiracy); his own articles; outing and naming those in the city who aren't who they say.

But nobody believes the man telling stories of monsters walking among us until it's too late.

His income is his family's wire transfers every month. They no longer ask where it's going between medical bills for Hanna. They pay their kids, so they don't have to answer all the calls.

Tomás lives in a campervan that he rents on the outskirts of Tideview University. He probably shouldn't park it there, but he's paying his parking tickets. Nobody's towed him though, yet.

All the articles in The Leiry Conspiracy are either his own, or ones that his two singular readers have sent it. Likely equally as a conspiracy theorist as he is.

WANTED CONNECTIONS

PORT LEIRY'S LEGITIMATES ; People who actually do work for the paper that Priestley doesn't. Either they suspect he's breaking in, or think his ID is phoney. (It is) Plus all the crazy crackheads that might be oblivious and trying to be his friend. Perhaps people who share his interest in spreading the truth in the paper. Give me all the dumb HCs.

YOU'RE MISSING IT ; Tomás is the kind of guy who’d probs like chat up a real-in-the-flesh supernatural at the damn bar like a bumbling idiot and tell wacky stories about one time. Yet, not realise the truth is literally under his nose. Maybe he's nearly spilt ice cream on a four thousand dollar suit and instead he's just invoked the wrath of something unpleasant. He does have this habit of being this irritating thorn in everyone’s side (or amusing lil shit, who knows, maybe they’ll vibe) but regardless, maybe uses/abuses him for his media-ness, heads-up on working stories or gathering his secret, need -to-know intel for his stories. Tomás just thinks he’s got SUCH COOL FRIENDS who know everyone and he enjoys bouncing foolhardy stories with them.

COP THE STORY ; So, perhaps, that little nosy cop that knows that Tomás definitely has loose lips for. (And vice versa, he's badgering the PL force into telling him confidential information) He will say everything he’s thinking and definitely share things he probably shouldn’t. Also, the cop that’s pulling him out/bailing him away from dangerous situations. Police are second on the scene to Tomás who appears to always be there with a desire for the exclusive; notepad and a pen in hand like some fly on every city wall. Possibly baits him sometimes perhaps and uses him as a stand-in; sends a civvie media annoyance into the fray instead of potentially losing a cop? Hm.

SCANDALOUS SHENANIGANS ; Give him someone who’s got the scandal of the century, he’s stumbled upon it and has no idea what to do with the information. Something that sounds so magical and ridiculous that he has to write it. There's no saying whether it's the dead truth, or some bogus lie that some supernatural or prankster has fed him and he's published. Maybe something spicy, or messy.

VIBES

Fresh coffee splashes over Tomás’ shoes, and from over-stacked hands goes the prints – down into the same spillage that’s soaking his once-white socks. Brogues are stained and slick with the hot liquid that trickles off fresh lacquer. He’s bug-eying the mess that’s right at his feet. Shit, shit, shit lord, fuck. It’s said a hundred times in his head – is still being said even when he’s collecting those brown stained sheets from the floor and hopelessly smacks the papers in some flair of dramatics as though they’re salvageable. There’s a redness about his cheeks, the late revelation that the print team are looking at him; stifling laughter; disgusted mostly – an array of emotions that cross over every possible spectrum of this man is an idiot. (Priestley doesn't work here, and the fake ID badge says that, if someone cared to look at the fake intern too closely, so he ducks his head down) The one print he wants to publish on borrowed (stolen) equipment is now smeared and illegible. Thus, the calculations for how much time he has to reprint, rebind and organise a new stack of tomorrow’s article drafts begin; and if he sacrifices the dignity of getting out of coffee-stained clothes, he might just do it.

A house of noise practically vibrates the walls of the cramped townhouse, Tomás is running along the downstairs corridors; a child; the second eldest of an overflowing family. Loves it; enjoys his siblings rivalries; all trivial; all playful and a kind of too-easy upbringing that makes the Priestley name sound too much like The Thompson’s, the whole name on the damn letterbox and a front yard that is a little too primp for a three by three. It serves as nothing more than aesthetic when it’s practicality doesn’t extend past showing off the ornamental wishing well that sits in the centre of the front yard. Tomás understands it a little more than his younger siblings, and knows what that late night yelling means behind closed doors when everyone else is sleeping. He lies awake at night just listening to the story to be told, stares a little too long at his parents in the morning wearing the perfection masks when making breakfast and that energy of excitement reverberates through the house once more. Tomás tries to help – take the weight off having seven children in the house, a crazy number to manage in a small place that barely has enough bedrooms with two sharing, but they carried an air that they loved it. That finances were fine; his father is a firefighter and his mother some hotshot lawyer that a young Tomás doesn’t quite understand just yet – much like how those clashing schedules were never going to work in the long term; stress worn, never shown. And Tomás doesn’t want to do law. He had never been quite heroic enough to be a first responder. His older brother, the favourite for that. He liked to write about it however – stories that were told to engage and passed around scrap papers in the house; made fictional by boogeymen and ghosts. Those late night rows that he heard became rumours between ever ageing siblings. His older brother collected Tom's stories and tossed them out before they ever made it back to their parents. Peacekeeper; eventual lawman; proud son of the Priestley’s. Tomás, the failing master's student, doesn’t much compare to that.

Shoes clack fast on the sidewalk when Tomás is barrelling through the concrete jungle with a pen in hand. He's a Wildman in the wilderness. Given the head's up in text from a friend that tell that there’s a story brewing on the strip and he’s desperate to get the scoop, wants to at least have something to claim as one of the first on scene; a spontaneous fire has broken out. It could be anything. A pyromaniac running rampant. (he does wonder, with mild concern if his father will be on the scene) It won't matter if he doesn't make it in time and he only comes close because he’s already nearby. In these moments, he thinks about the possibility that this could be the make and break it one; the entry to the big time(whatever that means, changes, depending on the circumstance.) and that he could uproot the magical into the real world. It might be taken with a little more severity if he can come back with something that’d be front-page news. And sometimes, that desperation crosses into reckless and downright foolish when he continues to dive headfirst into an emergency responders scene. His phone is out, pen at the ready to jot down statements on his goddamn arm if his videoing doesn’t cut it. Nine times out of ten, he’s being dragged out of a firefight; the crossfire. Often doted luckiest man alive for coming out unscathed and ultimately confused about why he cannot get closer to get the details; the ones that really matter – all whilst grinning like he doesn’t hear the sound of shouting from a neighbouring rooftop that maybe, just maybe, the person he wants to interview might jump before he gets the chance. He then wonders how fast he can climb. Yet, he definitely should not find out. 

There’s a little scrawling in the corner of his notebook – a doodle some might say, a little cartoonish character that takes up residence on each little lined paper and acts as a marker for the little flipbooks Tomás seems to end up creating. This one is a banshee screaming, yelling yelling, travelling through the pages. It's only scribbles in the little bursts of time he does have – between school, calling his family and the extra effort put into his personal newspaper that takes up nearly every waking hour. But he likes to doodle, scribble little stories that match up – or don’t – depending on the day really; a tranquillity that he thinks spurs from his five younger siblings and how keeping them entertained at times can be gruelling; sketching seems like an out to writing the stories where imagery sometimes can denote it in another way. Often leaves little scrap papers around the camper he's renting on the outskirts of Tideview.

Spelman Seminary, companionship, Sophia B. Packard, and Harriet E. Giles

In 1881, Sophia Brett Packard founded Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary with her longtime companion, Harriet E. Giles. The school would later be renamed Spelman Seminary in 1884 in honor of John D. Rockefeller's wife, Laura Celestia "Cettie" Spelman, who was an active abolitionist and school teacher, since the latter had paid the balance to keep the school open, which opened its doors in 1888. Sophia would continue onward on the school's board of trustees, then as president until her death in June 1891, when there were 464 students and faculty of 34. There's more to this story than the four paragraphs on Sophia's Wikipedia page.

Sophia, my fifth cousin five times removed, was born in New Salem, Massachusetts in January 1824 to Winslow Packard (1790-1852) and Rachel Freeman (1788-1844). She had five siblings: Joseph Fairbanks (1812-1883), Jane (b. 1815), Mary (1815-1838), Hubbard Vaughn (1817-1861), and Rachel Maria (b. 1818). She would graduate from the Charleston Female Seminary in Massachusetts, work at the Connecticut Literary Institution in Suffield, be secretary for the American Baptist Home Mission Society. By the early 1880s she was committed to helping improve education for Black people, specifically Black women, in the South. She would later be described as a "woman of rare executive ability" and having an earnest, strong character. [1]

There is more to be said. You may have noticed earlier that I described Harriet E. Giles as her life-long companion. This is first evidenced by the fact that Sophia died from sickness while on a summer vacation with Harriet, and would be buried in Athol, Massachusetts. Harriet, who lived until 1909, and born in New Salem, Massachusetts like Sophia, would become the president of Spelman Seminary when Sophia died. One writer would call Harriet and Sophia a lesbian power couple, noting that they met each other in the mid-1850s when Harriet was a student at New Salem Academy and Sophia was the preceptor. Both would be buried next to one each other in Silver Lake Cemetery. They would also be described as "close friends and supportive coworkers" by Harry G. Lefever in his article on the early origins of Spelman College. He also noted note the New England-progressive outlook they brought to the school, noting their emphasis on liberal and industrial courses, but employed assumptions about gender roles, which became part of the curriculum while being self-sacrificing and putting others before themselves. At the same time, they never fundamentally challenged social injustices or inequities, either by staying silent about redistribution of land for formerly enslaved peoples, not actively lobbying to end lynching within the South, or having Black people in leadership positions. [2]

Further evidence shows Harriet and Sophia living together in Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut in 1860, within the Mather household, in this below census extract:

The same is the case in 1865, when they are living in the same household in Worcester, Massachusetts, along with many other teachers and students. She would still be living in Worcester, Massachusetts until at least 1867. At first I couldn't find her in the 1870 census, and her 1890 passport application does not mention Harriet. However, digging into it more, I found them together in Suffolk, Massachusetts, and it turns out that Harriet submitted a passport application at the same time as Sophia. Additionally, when Harriet died in November 1909 of pneumonia, an obituary in The Sumpter Enterprise at the time described Sophia as Harriet's "friend and co-worker". The Atlanta Constitution would use similar language in their obituary. They were both called "devoted Christian woman" in another article about Spellman, which isn't surprising considering Sophia had worked in a church and what became Spellman was originally in the basement of a church before moving to a new location. [3]

Otherwise, a 1853 student lists for New Salem Academy note that Harriet's father, Samuel, is the secretary of the academy, Harriet as a teacher of music. Sophia is not listed there. However, she is listed as a preceptress in 1855 and Samuel is still secretary of the school, and Harriet is a student in the school's classical department. I also found them together in the 1880 census, boarding on 275 Shawmut Avenue (which is seemingly just an apartment building) in Boston within the Ryder household, along with many other boarders. [8] Harriet would also write a moving eulogy to Sophia, and mentions "loving companionship" which is undoubtedly a way to allude to the romantic relationship they had together, whether it can be called a domestic partnership, romantic friendship, or something else:

It is not necessary to euloigize one so widely known. Her work speaks for her; and the monuments she has erected, will endure from generation to generation, in the lives made better by her influence. How large her bundle of sheaves! How thickly studded her crown with stars for those she has won to Christ! We mourn not for her, but for the work, and the workers who will so greatly miss her loving companionship and wise counsels. Surely "They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever."

Both also opened the Rollstone School in March 1859 together, which ended after both accepted teaching positions at the Connecticut Literary Institution. They both, would also, teach at the Oread Institute in Worchester from 1864 to 1867, with Sophia as co-principal and Harriet as teacher of ornamentals and music. They also both co-founded the Woman's American Baptist Home Mission Society in 1877.

Spelman Seminary would later become Spelman College when its name changed in 1924. Otherwise, one article in The Springfield Daily Republican on November 25, 1939, possibly accessed using one of the libraries here, notes that an oil painting of Harriet was gifted to the Swift River Valley Historical Society. It is likely still in their collections, even though it is strange since the society wasn't incorporated until 1962.

While we don't know everything about Sophia, Harriet, and their relationship, which some have described as an iconic same-sex couple among many others, we can say that their legacy certainly lives on to this day.

The Grand Ducal Wedding Part 2

Boredeaux Abbey, Violette, Bordeaux

Sophie: turning back to the guest entrance to the abbey we do see Carrington’s own HRH Princess Claire and her husband the newly minted Prince Jim of Ashbury! Princess Claire stuns as usual in her light blue dress while her husband looks dapper in his morning suit! I want to be able to find my Jim.

Pierre: Annywho, behind them are three of the couple’s four children, Lord Elias, Lord Anton, and Lady Leonora! It seems to be a green and grey theme today with Lady Leonora wearing that eye-catching off the shoulder dress with matching fascinator with her brothers again in dapper morning suits.

Sophie: and a couple of cars are pulling up to the abbey and it appears to be the bridal party! We can see TIH Crown Prince Louis, Prince Henri, & Princess Maria Aisha, Lady Beatrice of Ashbury, and Lady Alex of Carlisle flanking the younger bridal party members. It is appearing to be a full on family affair!

Pierre: I find it sweet that they both opted for their siblings to be apart of their big day. Many do forget that the Grand Duke of Anjou is actually a blood relative to the Grand Duke of Bordeaux through their mother, the late Duchess Cecile of Bordeaux.

Sophie: It is sweet! Also to finish listing out the bridal party in terms of the kids, we have TRH Prince Kristof and Princess Cerys the children of Queen Anastasia who is cousin of the Bride, Masters Jeffery and David Villa, the groom’s nephews, Master Martin Weaver the son of the Grooms current Commanding Officer Major Jesse Weaver, and Lady Stella Dubose, daughter of the Viscount of Champagne who is a friend to the Imperial family.

Pierre: speaking of friends of the Imperial Family, we have TRH Princess Isabella and Prince Matthew of Saliceau. Princess Isabella has been host to our own Princess Maria Aisha as she spends time in Saliceau to be surrounded by other female royals. I have to say…post club incident, Princess Maria Aisha has been doing well on her time away! We do also want to point out that Prince Matthew also has a cousin who will be arriving shortly, Grand Duchess Elisabeth of Anjou.

Sophie: I have to say, Princess Bella looks splendid! Is that light blue or light purple, I cannot tell but I want that color!

Pierre: And Prince Matthew is rocking some amazing leather shoes with that double breasted suit. We love it when the gentleman also respect the shoe game.

Sophie: And behind them appears to be Major Jesse Weaver, the Grand Duke’s boss and his wife Tori who has opted for a light blue off the shoulder number. It’s easy to forget given that some of these guests are high profile, but this is also a family wedding, so it’s great to see some members of the IAF here to support their fellow Airman.

Pierre: And behind them is the Dubose family! Viscount Champagne and Lady Aria followed by their son Lord Eddison, who is close to HIH Princess Maria Aisha and has been with her in Saliceau.

Sophie: Back at the entrance to the abbey wesee the arrival of the Groom’s twin sister, Mrs. Isabella Villa and her husband Captain Villa. The pair’s twin boys are serving as pages today. Can I just say…I’m loving the Green theme through this wedding!

Pierre: Well we have seen the happy couple match in the color many times so it’s only fitting that we see their guests pay their respects. Turning back to the guest entrance

Pierre: We see the Grand Duchesses of Anjou, Elisabeth and Priyanka now heading into the abbey. The sister-in-laws to the groom are apart of the first polyamorous union alongside the Grand Duke of Anjou to be apart of the Imperial Family in Pierreland history so it is magical to see them both walk into a Church of Pierre building.

Sophie: Back inside the abbey, we see some of the final guests being escorted by kilt clad employees of Eagle Hall, the Grand Duke of Bordeaux’s Estate in their finery escorting His Majesty King Henrik of Charleston and his husband the Duke of Lilabon or as he is known here in Pierreland, Grand Duke Michael of Burgundy! And just behind them, We see Her Majesty Queen Anastasia of Carrington and her husband HRH the Duke of Clois!

Pierre: And one of the last guests to arrive before the Emperor and the Bride is the Bride’s Mother, HRH Princess Katherine of Carrington, Dowager Duchess of Carlisle and I must say, she looks stunning! I sense a trend with everyone in Green!

Sophie: Yes! It is a dark shade of green but it is nice to see Princess Katherine in something other than black since she has been in darker colors since the death of her husband Arthur, Duke of Carlisle. She is seen speaking to the Archbishop of Bordeaux, Simon Peter, probably reminiscing on her big day before heading inside.

Pierre: And we hear trumpets blaring and we now see that TIM Emperor David and Empress Katalina have arrived!
