☆ Meet Adelaide Addie ☆
Tumblr media
Walking through the picturesque streets of Cardinal Hill, you find ( Adelaide "Addie" Sawyer ), the ( 28 ) year old ( journalist ) originally from ( Cardinal Hill, Washington ). Living alongside them in such a small town, you know that they're ( innovative ) and ( impulsive ), but what you might not know is that they are a ( witch ), and that they’re hiding something… ― Margaret Qualley, bisexual, cisfemale, & she/her.
TW: Drugs; Cults
Growing up in the small, sleepy town of Cardinal Hill, Washington, Adelaide "Addie" Sawyer always felt like an outsider. As the middle child in a family of five, she often found herself caught between her siblings―the picture-perfect, successful firstborn and the adored baby who could do no wrong. While her older sibling seemed destined for success and her younger sibling was showered with attention, Addie felt overlooked. She spent much of her childhood at the local dance studio, the only place that made her feel like she wasn't merely some afterthought. Her ballet instructor was the only one to ever show her praise; and instead of photos of her at recitals gracing the walls of her childhood home, they graced the halls of the local dance studio instead.
As she entered her teenage years, the dance studio was still her safe haven. When she wasn't getting high behind the bleachers at school, she could be found at the studio, practicing her fouettés to ensure they were perfect by the time she graced the stage at the winter recital. To her classmates, she was the girl who could pirouette effortlessly down the hall but who could also tell you where to score the best weed. Dance was her refuge; yet its solace couldn’t quell her frustration with the narrow expectations of Cardinal Hill or the weight of her family’s dynamics. The town, with its predictable routines and closed-off ways, felt stifling to her free-spirited nature. Addie longed for a life beyond the hills, one where she wasn’t defined by who she was or where she came from. Every rehearsal, every joint shared under the bleachers, every small rebellion only fueled her desire to escape and explore a world full of freedom, adventure, and the promise of the unknown. By the time she turned eighteen, she knew she had to leave—as there was no question that her future lay beyond Cardinal Hill.
Upon graduating high school in June of 1980, Addie packed up and left Cardinal Hill with a heart full of hope and a longing for adventure. Her first stop was southern California, where she spent several months in the Los Angeles area, soaking up the sun, meeting new people, and diving headfirst into the bohemian lifestyle. It was there she met Teagan, another free-spirited young woman who shared in her wanderlust. Together, they traveled on a whim, experiencing the joys and frustrations of a life without roots; and eventually the pair—deciding it was time for more than the USA could offer—set off for Thailand. In Thailand, the pair immersed themselves in the vibrant culture, from the colorful markets of Bangkok to the peaceful temples nestled in the countryside. Addie began to capture her thoughts through freelance journalism and photography, writing about the places they visited and capturing the sights through her lens. The bustling cities and lush landscapes ignited her creativity; and she felt a deep connection to the rhythm of Southeast Asia. Eventually, though, the call of new horizons took her further south; and Addie decided to continue her journey solo, this time to Australia.
The time in Australia marked the longest stretch she had spent anywhere since leaving Cardinal Hill; and it became a formative chapter in her journey. Landing in Sydney, she was immediately captivated by the laid-back vibe of the city and the friendly, easygoing people. She found work as a writer, contributing to travel magazines and local publications, her articles painting vivid pictures of the Australian landscape from an outsider's perspective, its surf culture, and the growing art scene in places like Melbourne. The endless summer—mixed with spontaneous road trips—felt like a dream; but it wasn’t long before the wildness of Australia’s outback called to the witch. She wandered through the country’s deserts, mountains, and remote beach towns, becoming increasingly immersed in the natural beauty that surrounded her. But with her free-spirited nature came a sense of restlessness; and after almost three years in Australia, Addie felt the pull to move on once more: this time headed for Europe... where she would cross paths with someone who would change the course of her journey entirely.
[redacted]
In late 1990, after narrowly escaping the dangerous predicament she found herself in, Addie made her way back to Cardinal Hill. She was exhausted—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and sought refuge in the place most familiar: home. Her return was both a relief and a burden; she couldn’t shake the feeling of Oïguasu Arandu's reach and the fear that they would come looking for her. But for now, she was safe; and her hometown felt like the only place where she could finally rest. She arrived just before Christmas with nothing but her backpack and a heart full of unresolved questions. Now "the ballerina getting high behind the bleachers" is finally home and ready to shake things up in the place she once couldn’t wait to leave.
