Martina Navratilova (born October 18, 1956) is a Czech-American former professional tennis player. Widely considered among the greatest tennis players of all time, Navratilova won 18 major singles titles, 31 major women's doubles titles, and 10 major mixed doubles titles, for a combined total of 59 major titles, the most in the Open Era. Alongside Chris Evert, her greatest rival, Navratilova dominated women's tennis for the first two-thirds of the 1980s.
Navratilova was ranked as the world No. 1 in singles for a total of 332 weeks (second only to Steffi Graf), and for a record 237 weeks in doubles, making her the only player in history to have held the top spot in both disciplines for over 200 weeks. She won 167 top-level singles titles and 177 doubles titles, both the Open Era records. She won a record six consecutive singles majors across 1983 and 1984 while simultaneously winning the Grand Slam in doubles. Navratilova claims the best professional season winning percentage, 98.8% in 1983 (going 86–1 for the season), and the longest all-surface winning streak of 74 straight match wins. She reached the Wimbledon singles final 12 times, including for nine consecutive years from 1982 through 1990, and won the title a record nine times. Navratilova is one of the three tennis players, along with Margaret Court and Doris Hart, to have accomplished a career Grand Slam in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, called the career "Boxed Set". She won her last major title, the mixed doubles crown at the 2006 US Open, shortly before her 50th birthday, and 32 years after her first major title in 1974.
Originally from Czechoslovakia, Navratilova was stripped of her citizenship when, in 1975 at age 18, she asked the United States for political asylum and was granted temporary residence. She became a US citizen in 1981. On January 9, 2008, Navratilova reacquired Czech citizenship, thus becoming a dual citizen. She stated she has not renounced her U.S. citizenship nor does she plan to do so, and that reclaiming Czech nationality was not politically motivated. Navratilova has been openly gay since 1981, and has been an activist on gay rights.
Navratilova is considered one of the best female tennis players of all time and in 2005, Tennis magazine selected her as the greatest female tennis player for the years 1965 through 2005, directly over Steffi Graf. Billie Jean King, a former World No. 1 player, said in 2006 that Navratilova is "the greatest singles, doubles and mixed doubles player who's ever lived." In 2008, tennis historian and journalist Bud Collins called Navratilova "arguably, the greatest player of all time."
In 2000, she became a member of the Laureus Sports Foundation's Academy.
In 2006, Martina Navratilova was named by Equality Forum as one of their 31 Icons of the LGBT History Month.
Tennis writer Steve Flink, in his book The Greatest Tennis Matches of the Twentieth Century (1999), named her as the second best female player of the 20th century, directly behind Steffi Graf.
In 2009, Navratilova was awarded the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) highest accolade, the Philippe Chatrier Award, for her contributions to tennis both on and off the court.
In June 2011, she was named one of the "30 Legends of Women's Tennis: Past, Present and Future" by Time.
In March 2012, The Tennis Channel named Navratilova as the second greatest female tennis player of all times, behind Steffi Graf, in their list of 100 greatest tennis players of all times.
On August 2, 2013, Navratilova was among the first class of inductees into the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame.
On May 12, 2016, Navratilova was made an honorary fellow of Lucy Cavendish College of the University of Cambridge.

Suggestions for Tumblr's next book club
With Dracula Daily on the horizon again, I've been pondering what other out-of-copyright novels we might like to consider reading very slowly. Here are my ideas! And if any of them already exist, lmk.
North and South
Author: Elizabeth Gaskell Year of publication: 1854-55 Length: 185,000 words, 52 chapters. So we could have a chapter weekly for a full year. Summary: Margaret Hale is forced to leave the rural south of England and settle in the rough, industrial north. There she clashes with mill-owner John Thornton over his treatment of his workers... Why Tumblr would like it: Enemies to Lovers! Class struggle! Fascinating historical context! Honestly, it's a great read.
Evelina
Author: Fanny Burney Year of publication: 1778 Length: 157,000 words in 84 letters. That's right, it's epistolary, and the letters are almost all sent March to October of the same year, so we could read this one in true Dracula Daily fashion. Summary: Evelina is the sheltered daughter of an aristocrat trying to make her way in the world of late 18th-century society. Why Tumblr would like it: Evelina is a likeable, relatable character. I think it'd be fun to get emails from her.
The Well of Loneliness
Author: Radclyffe Hall Year of publication: 1928 Length: 158,000 words in 56 chapters. Summary: The story of Stephen Gordon, a girl who realises at an early age that she's a lesbian, and her attempts to find love in the early 20th century. Why Tumblr would like it: It's one of the most iconic lesbian novels of the 20th century!
The War of the Worlds
Author: HG Wells Year of publication: 1897 Length: 63,000 words in 27 chapters. Summary: Alien invaders land from Mars and fuck up the south of England. Why Tumblr would like it: Alien invaders land from Mars and fuck up the south of England, come on, what's not to like?
The Moonstone
Author: Wilkie Collins Year of publication: 1868 Length: 200,000 words (so a bit of a marathon) in 51 chapters. Summary: A young English woman inherits a large Indian diamond of dubious provenance on her 18th birthday. Then it gets stolen! Why Tumblr would like it: One of the first detective novels, and supposed to be one of the best, it's a page turner with lots of suspense, twists and cliffhanger endings.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles
Author: Agatha Christie Year of publication: 1920 Length: 60,000 words in 13 chapters. Summary: The first murder mystery starring Hercule Poirot. Why Tumblr would like it: Look, you liked Glass Onion, right? And if you like this, Agatha Christie's novels are emerging from copyright at the rate of about two per year.
Les Misérables
Author: Victor Hugo Year of publication: 1862 Length: 570,000 words in the English translation (ouch) in 365 chapters. Summary: A vast, sweeping story of poverty, justice and revolution in early 19th century France. Why Tumblr would like it: Well, if you thought Moby Dick didn't have enough digressions...
The Canterbury Tales
Author: Geoffrey Chaucer Year of publication: 1387-1400 Length: 24 stories averaging 700 lines each. Summary: Some pilgrims are heading to Canterbury. They tell one another stories to pass the time. These are their stories. Why Tumblr would like it: I mean, there's a reason we still read these 600 years later. They're a fascinating insight into medieval life, but they're also - for the most part - just good fun.
If you love any of these suggestions and would really like to see it take off, reblog to help make it happen.

A paper I wrote a few years ago. I have take out name, class, date, etc for privacy reasons
WONDER WOMAN, ALTHOUGH COMING FROM A FETISHIZED BACKGROUND, WAS CREATED TO BE A TRUE FEMINIST.
Wonder Woman was not created to be a typical superhero for DC Comics. William “Charles” Marston created Wonder Women to save the world in so many ways. World War II started on September 1, 1939, and two years later, Marston created Wonder Woman as psychological propaganda to end WWII and wars to come. Married and working with his wife Elizabeth Holloway in the psychology department at Tufts University in the 1920s, they both worked on building the lie detector machine. Elizabeth and William found Olive Bryne who volunteered to help the Marstons in their research, the three together were able to complete the lie detector in 1921. Over dinner, all three had discussed Olive’s origins; Olive expressed that she was the niece of Margaret Sanger. Both Elizabeth and William in 1912 had marched with Margaret’s Sanger in her campaign in educating women in sex and to express free love. As the three grew close it was clear to them they had feelings for each other; William believed that both of the women who he grew to love more together were the best qualities of women. Marston had confidence that women could use their charms and feminine aspects to change the world as it had changed him using truth, love, and dominance. Behind the scenes when BDSM (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadochism and Masochism) was illegal the three would go privately to shibari; the art of rope shows expressing the ideas of dominance and submission. While teaching at Tuft, William taught what is called the DISC theory standing for Dominance, Influence, Submission, Compliance. William Marston believed that men needed to submit to women but they wouldn’t do it willingly. I am convinced with the background history of BDSM, Wonder Woman was created with the values to be a feminist pop icon.
Professor Marston and his Theories
Marston was one of the first in his field in 1920 to practice and teach about D/s, which stands for Dominance and Submission. After teaching law, Marston in 1922 went on to teach Psychology. He taught young women in his classes DISC standing for Dominance, Influence, Submission, And Compliance: “Marston proposed that human behavior was directed principally by domination and loving submission. Related to this model were Marston’s views on female equality and his belief that women should rule the world, given their greater capacity for love.” He believed that men wouldn't willingly submit and that it would take women of the world to help. Throughout Wonder Woman, people can see Marston’s beliefs of dominance and submission his mistress Olive said “The Marston psychology of living…was injected into every page of WW.” He suspected that during his time in the 1920s that women were not up to date. He felt women were ashamed of themselves for the stereotypes of being weak, small, without a voice. I give credit to Lepore shedding light on behalf of Marston’s creation where Marston through Wonder Woman wanted to fight these beliefs for women that they shouldn’t feel ashamed but to feel empowered through Wonder Woman, “She wore a golden tiara, a red bustier, blue underpants and knee-high, red leather boots. She was a little slinky; she was very kinky. She’d left Paradise to fight fascism with feminism, in “America, the last citadel of democracy, and of equal rights for women!” I believe that is why he loved his wife Elizabeth for the way she was outspoken, fierce, brave, and had a work ethic and also loved his girlfriend Olive for she was submissive but was confident, bold, and shared her truth with hesitation. However for all his beliefs, while also marching with one of the most well respected and known feminists Margaret Sanger, William wouldn’t share his secrets with the world and kept his secrets in Wonder Woman “For all his love of the spotlight and desire for respect and fame, Marston was never radical enough to openly stake his gender privilege against his ideals.” Marston, secretly with his wife and mistress during the time BDSM gatherings were illegal, would practice the lifestyle. Throughout the pages of the comic book of WW, people can catch bondage, chains, gags, and spanking. Between both men and women there was always a level of dominance and submission however women in his comic always dominated and prevailed.
His family of two women and four children
Marston and  Elizabeth Holloway met as younger children. Growing up Holloway would occasionally dress as a boy and it excited Marston to change his view of what gender was. Holloway and Marston argued and fought but he always respected her viewpoints and how smart she was and always gave her credit for that. William and Elizabeth got married in 1915 and when once asked why she got married to Marston she said she was always afraid she would stand behind Marston’s shadow but that he respected her. The two worked very closely at home and at work, both working in the psychology field.  Marston met Olive Bryne in 1925 and was her psychology professor. When Marston fell in love with Ms. Bryne, he gave his wife two options; either they all lived together in a relationship or he would leave her for Olive.  Elizabeth Hollaway invited Olive Bryne to move in. Both women gave birth to William Marston’s children both have two kids. Hollaway went to work while Bryne stayed home and raised the children. It wasn’t until Later the Byrnes children found out their father was Charles Marston in the 60s.  Marston, Holloway, and Byrne later as years went on participated in kink parties with 10 other individuals. Most of the parties were women dominatrix making their men submit to them. I am confident a lot of where Marston had got his ideas for Wonder Women and her stories that involve chains, whips, gags, rope, and bondage. I appreciate that Lepore was able to see however through the kink it was able to show Marston’s agenda through kink that there are feminist values in the comic, “The seemingly paradoxical themes of feminism and salacious sexual activities pervade the book from its opening pages, where Lepore describes the superheroine as “very kinky.” Cunningly, Lepore aligns Wonder Woman’s secret identity with the secret history of both her feminist roots and Marston’s political feminist agenda.”
Margaret Sanger
When Marston was a student Margaret Sanger had attended his campus in 1912 to share with females her ideas on feminism and birth control. Marston was so moved by Sanger’s ideas to get the rights for women to vote. I regard it as true that Wonder Woman was inspired by the two women in Marston’s life Margaret and her niece Olive Bryne. While Bryne lived with Marston and his Wife Elizabeth, Lepore explains the importance of this relationship, “She was also the niece of Margaret Sanger, one of the most important feminists of the 20th century. In 1916, Sanger and her sister, Ethel Byrne, Olive Byrne’s mother, had opened the first birth-control clinic in the United States. They were both arrested for the illegal distribution of contraception. In jail in 1917, Ethel Byrne went on a hunger strike and nearly died.”  Walsh emphasizes how Sanger and Bryne inspired him explaining, “The voices of the real women in Marston’s life come through in carefully preserved Family Circle articles written by Olive Byrne, Marston’s mistress, Sanger’s niece, and the inspiration for Wonder Woman.” If you look at one of both photos you can see where Wonder Woman and A feminist artist Lou Rodgers’s art piece look almost alike. I am of the opinion that different artwork of feminist propaganda helped inspire Marston. Marston with three different feminists in his life it’s hard to argue that Wonder Woman wasn’t created with feminist values. Margaret Sanger would chain herself with chains to different poles to fight for the right for women to be able to vote and through the comics, you can see Wonder Woman busting out of the chains of “toxic masculinity” freeing herself with feminism.

~The Death of the Red Dragon~
With every death there’s rebirth. At least that is the religious tradition when it comes to the Easter holiday season. Today the Christian tradition celebrates the rise of their savior, Jesus Christ from the death, while Renaissance history remembers the death of the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty, Henry VII. Sensing the end was coming, Henry VII had made his will at the end of March 1509, less than a month later, on the 21st of April, he died at Richmond Palace. The palace had been formerly known as Sheen Palace, but renamed after reconstruction had begun, in honor of the title he’d inherited from his father (Edmund Tudor) prior to his kingship. He was outlived by his younger son and two daughters, one of whom had already been made Queen of Scotland upon her marriage to the King of Scots, James IV; and his mother, the formidable Margaret Beaufort whom had given his title and was also known as “my lady, the King’s mother.”
His funeral was a solemn affair. He was buried alongside his beloved wife, Elizabeth of York, whose marriage with her was seen as the union between the two previously warring houses, Lancaster and York, and was solidified in the Tudor rose which became a powerful icon that told an alternative (and simplified) tale of the wars of the roses. He was buried on May of that year in Westminster Abbey, specifically in the lady chapel –a chapel he’d commissioned for him and his descendants.
In his biography, chronicling the last years of Henry VII, “Winter King” Thomas Penn, notes that the country’s mourning for Henry VII paled in comparison to that of his wife. People certainly lamented his death, but were more eager to see his surviving son, Prince Harry, succeed him. Henry’s miserly attitude was a stark contrast with the youth and vigor displayed by his son who was months shy of becoming eighteen. While Henry’s reign had been determined by his last years on the throne, and perceived as a cold and austere figure, his son was seen as his complete opposite. The Winter King was long dead, long live the new King who’d bring a golden age to England.
The reigns of these two kings as we’re already aware was far more complex, with things not going they were prophesized by their contemporaries.

i need to know more about mcau wendy's horrible dumb takes on vice
- insane amounts of beef during 2020 election between wendy (warren supporter, firmly anti-bernie, says that bernie bros are all misogynists) stan (bernie bro, only recently started caring about politics because he was praised heavily by his fans for voting once, is kind of misogynistic but not because of the bernie bro thing it’s separate) and fireside (mostly kyle, pro-buttigieg and beefs with wendy indirectly on the pod because he hates her articles even though their politics are actually pretty similar at least on the surface. cartman mainly just makes fun of her for being a woman his politics don’t affect this.)
- wrote a think piece on the term “karen” and how it is a worrying example of the deepseated misogyny in america. this leads to a week or so of beef with craig, who thinks this take is dumb and tears it apart on catg. he is then accused of being a misogynistic gay man for disagreeing with her and inserting himself into women’s business and it becomes a WHOLE thing.
- serial girlbossifier of public figures -> this gets her in trouble with people who claim that she’s erasing their bad actions by treating them as feminist icons (“did margaret thatcher effectively utilize girl power…”)
- can get into a very “just vote them out!” mindset in her writing which pisses people off but it’s not true. she doesn’t think you should just vote! she also thinks you should go to marches sometimes.

A golden era in British comedy history is set to come to a close with tomorrow's sale of items belonging to entertainer Eric Morecambe. The highly personal collection was found in Morecambe's former home in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, and has been left untouched for decades. With the death of his wife, Joan, who passed away in March at 97, these invaluable memorabilia will now be sent to fans, giving people a glimpse of the life of one of Britain's most-loved comedians. Eric Morecambe died in 1984 at 58. His partner Ernie Wise died in 1999 at 73. They entertained millions together and are now icons of British entertainment as long-lived memories. It is going to be sold by auction house Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire, sourced from 700 lots in January, over 40 years since Morecambe's death. The treasures consist of costumes from unforgettable sketches and props, such as Eric's ventriloquist dummy, Charlie, and keepsakes so deeply personal. Victoria Sheppard, the sale manager for Hansons, described the discovery as "truly magical" while referring to Morecambe's home, Brachefield, as a "shrine" to his remarkable life and career. "We've found costumes from memorable sketches and countless props, including Eric's famous ventriloquist dummy," said Sheppard. Megalit, CC BY-SA 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0, via Wikimedia Commons All these are going to be on sale - from Morecambe's signature glasses, to the piano upon which he used to practice, through to a portrait by royal artist Richard Stone and annotated joke books. The lots will include telegrams from the late Prince Philip, letters from Margaret Thatcher, and notes by comedy greats like Ronnie Barker and Tommy Cooper. For Morecambe's youngsters-Gail, Gary and Steven-the sale is both bittersweet and momentous. To 71-year-old Gail Stuart, it marks a much emotional milestone: the past year has been one in which she says there has been much reflection and nostalgia. "It's been an interesting year, with a real sense of it being the end of an era," she said. Gary Morecambe, 58, said: "It's really the end of that chapter for our family's life. For Gail and I at least, it began in the 1950s. Seeing these items find new homes marks a definitive end to that wonderful era," he said. What makes the auction even more significant, Gary revealed, is that Joan Morecambe left the family home largely untouched after Eric’s death. “We’ve had everything literally under the same roof for 56 years. It’s as though time stood still,” he remarked. A Glimpse Beyond the Comedian While the world recalls Eric Morecambe as a comedic genius, his children brought out multifaceted personality. "When thinking about my father, it's always easy to focus on the great comedian he was. But he was also a home-loving man with a deep passion for the natural world," Gary said. For Gail, her childhood memories are vivid and cherished. "And more than that, because they were so kind, humble, and family-oriented in values." She described her upbringing as a time filled with joy and inspiration. "Both had great gifts and devoted their lives to family," she said. "All my memories are in glorious Technicolor. Growing up, we shared Dad with the British people, the amazing fans.". It was only when he died that I realized how much the nation really loved him and Morecambe and Wise." A Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity It promises to be treasure for comedy enthusiasts and collectors in store. Along with memorabilia from Morecambe's professional career are deeply personal letters, such as a moving message from Ernie Wise that shows how close the pair came to splitting up-an eventuality that happily never occurred. The auction will take place on January 10 and 11; the catalogue of the auction, however, will be available from December 1. So, fans of Eric Morecambe and his eternal legacy in comedy will have a chance to buy a piece of history to preserve the magic of an entertainer who brought laughter and smiles to generations. As the belongings move from the family's cherished collection to the hands of admirers, this auction doesn't just pay tribute to a comedy legend but also marks the closing of a special era in the history of British television. Exploring Atlanta’s Historic Sites and Landmarks
Tumblr media
Atlanta is a beautiful city with rich history and a thriving cultural heritage. Its story began in 1837 when the city was established as a transportation hub at the intersection of two major railroad lines. Originally named "Terminus”, Atlanta became a focal point during the Civil War in the 1860s and the transformative civil rights movement of the 1960s.
Today, Atlanta proudly preserves several historic sites and landmarks that serve as reminders of the city's legacy and the individuals who have made indelible marks on history. They provide a window into the past, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s as well as American history.
If you are planning an Atlanta travel, and wish to know which historic sites and landmarks to visit, read on.
Best time to visit Atlanta
The best time to visit Atlanta would be during spring (March to May) or fall (September to November) when the weather is pleasant, and there are various events happening throughout the city. One can easily find affordable flights to Atlanta during this period.
Fall and spring in Atlanta are mild and enjoyable, with temperatures ranging from the 60s to 70s Fahrenheit. The city starts blooming with colorful flowers and trees, making it a great time for outdoor activities.
Summers in Atlanta are hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite the heat, summer is a popular time to visit because of various festivals, events, and outdoor concerts
Winter (December to February): Winters in Atlanta are generally mild, but temperatures can occasionally drop below freezing. Average highs are in the 50s Fahrenheit. While snowfall is not a regular occurrence, the city typically experiences a few snowfall events each year, with the heaviest snowfall typically happening in January and February.
Some of the Iconic Atlanta Historic Landmarks
Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site- The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta is an important landmark dedicated to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is his birth home where visitors can explore his early years. Just next to the birth home is Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. King and his father served as pastors and which became a center for civil rights activism. The King Center, established by Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King Jr, showcases Dr. King's teachings and houses the King Library and Archives.
The Atlanta History Center- the Atlanta History Center offers visitors a deep dive into the city's history. Located in the Buckhead neighborhood, it consists of many attractions and exhibits. The Atlanta History Museum provides insights into the region's past through interactive displays, artifacts, and multimedia presentations. The Swan House, a beautiful mansion within the center, showcases the affluent lifestyle of early 20th-century Atlanta.

The museum's centerpiece is the Atlanta Cyclorama, a huge circular painting depicting the Battle of Atlanta. The Cyclorama provides visitors with a detailed portrayal of the historic battle. In addition to the Cyclorama, the museum also contains a collection of Civil War artifacts, including weapons, uniforms, and personal items, offering additional insights into the war.

May The Fourth Be With You
Yep, it’s Thursday, and it’s not Alex. Because it’s May the 4th. And they haven’t watched Star Wars yet, well, technically, they’ve watched “Star Wars” the movie, but not the series. Relevant XKCD
Tumblr media
So, I have to write today’s post. Also, fair warning, a lot of what I’m gonna be writing about may be very well known and boring stuff, but I only watched the series last year, and the target audience is Alex, so spoilers are also going to be at a minimum.
Cultural Impact of Star Wars
Star Wars since its inception in 1977 has had an immense cultural impact. I mean, it and Star Trek are apparently the only two fictional media with a whole Wikipedia page for its cultural impact. There's even a whole Wikipedia page listing organisms named after Star Wars characters.
The phrase “May the 4th be with you” was first used, surprisingly, by the Conservative Party of the UK in a congratulatory advertisement after Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister.
Tumblr media
Yes, I'm attaching a crap ton of images, I don't think anyone wants a wall of text and this is the most important day for nerds so I need this to be good.
“Luke, I am your father” is probably the most well known quote from fiction ever, despite being a Mandela Effect, what Vader actually said was “No, I am your father”, which is a small distinction, I guess.
youtube
This father has solved fatherhood.
In 2007 NASA launched a Space Shuttle containing Luke’s lightsaber prop from RoTJ. SpaceX’s Falcon rockets are also named after the Millennium Falcon, the heroes’ spacecraft in the Original and Sequel trilogy.
In the 2001 Census of England and Wales almost 0.8% people put down their religion as Jedi, becoming the 4th largest religion.
In 2014 in Ukraine The Internet Party tried to nominate a man called Darth Vader, but was ultimately refused because his identity could not be verified :(, and that’s not even all the Star Wars characters involved in Ukrainian politics.
Even food isn’t safe from Star Wars
Tumblr media
The Darth Vader burger apparently did not sell well, which I cannot for the life of me understand.
Not really a cultural impact thing but a funny controversy. Han Shot First. There’s a scene at the very beginning of Episode IVwhere Han is confronted by Greedo (that’s uh, a little on the nose) because of money that he owes. In the original 1977 release of the movie, it cuts to Greedo’s face, and there’s an explosion of smoke and sparks and the sound of a blaster, and Greedo dies. In the 1997 Special Edition of the movie, along with other changes, Greedo shoots Han and misses, and then Han shoots Greedo. And then in the 2004 cut of the movie, they shoot at almost the same time. People say it weakens his character arc, apparently.
The Music
Of course there’s a section dedicated to the music, I’m writing this post after all. Even if the music weren’t epic, there was bound to be a section. The movies by themselves are great, but I fail to imagine they would have reached legendary status without the soundtrack. The music for the Skywalker saga was composed by the legend himself, John Williams, and performed by The London Symphony Orchestra. His score was selected as the greatest film soundtrack of all time by the American Film Institute in 2005 and also entered into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being culturally and historically important. My adoration for John Williams’ music has already been expressed while exploring leitmotifs, but I’ll go into Star Wars music again since that was brief. The most iconic track in all of movie soundtrack history is probably “The Imperial March”.
This menacing track serves as the theme for the villain of the OT, Darth Vader. It perfectly fits Vader’s imposing nature and makes him feel even scarier. The main parts of the theme are also used in the Prequel Trilogy as foreshadowing and in some parts of the ST and the countless other related media relating to Vader.
The leitmotif appears at around 2:18.
“Binary Sunset”, plays in a  scene where Luke is looking at the two suns of Tatooine and previously intended to be Obi-Wan’s theme, is also an important score from Episode IV as it later evolved to a theme for The Force in general and signifies use of the Force. And there’s of course, The Main Theme. It’s the theme that plays before every Star Wars movie, and serves as a leitmotif for Luke in the OT and also used in victory themes.
“Duel Of The Fates” and “Battle Of The Heroes” are also very epic fight scenes and make those scenes even more memorable. Say what you will about the prequels, they definitely had the best lightsaber battles.
You can also hear parts of Imperial March and Duel of the Fates in this too.
Rey may not be very popular among fans but she sure does have an awesome theme. I mean, it's John Williams, what do you expect?
Same goes for Obi-Wan's opening theme from the series.
Okay, if it wasn't obvious already, I absolutely love John Williams' work, but there are other composers who have been brought in.
Like Ludwig Göransson (yes, Swedish <3) in The Mandalorian and The Book Of Boba Fett, has done an awesome job too. I especially am in love with The Mandalorian theme, I wish more of it played in the opening instead of the tiny snippet.
The World (or Galaxy, ig) of Star Wars
Star Wars is set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, and obviously, they have a lot of planets and species. In the movies we see Tatooine, a desert planet and Luke’s and Anakin’s home planet, Coruscant, the political center of the galaxy, Mustafar, a volcanic lava planet, where the events of the climax of RotS take place, and the swampy planet of Dagobah featured in [REDACTED], the planet of Mandalore, of the titular character from The Mandalorian, are some notable planets, and there are also a lot of unique alien species shown throughout the saga (but the main cast is mostly white men, like why can’t the main cast be aliens in a series set in a galaxy far far away? Also, relevant XKCD).
Tumblr media
Some notable ones are:
Yoda’s species, who we don’t know the name for yet, but we see three of them, at least in Live-Action media (Yoda, Yaddle, who I completely missed, but she was apparently there in Episode I and Baby Yoda)
Tumblr media
Wookies, Chewbacca's species.
Tumblr media
  Ahsoka Tano’s species, Togruta
Tumblr media
The cute birds we see in TLJ, Porgs
Tumblr media
And my personal favourite, Anzellans, who are tiny little mechanics who have the best freaking voice acting (Moaning Myrtle, apparently) ever. I fell in love with them after an awesome scene from The Mandalorian S3, although, it seems like no one shares my sentiment so there isn’t a complete clip on YouTube, although, maybe when I renew my Disney+ I might just upload one myself, so until then, take this:
youtube
I can’t count the number of times I watched this scene. The funny voice + the cuteness of Baby Yoda hugging them is just, awwww.
The worldbuilding in the movies is just a drop in the bucket compared to the incredible number of other, mostly Legends, media (Context: When Disney bought Star Wars they decided to mark everything that came before 2014 - the movies and Clone Wars part of “Legends” and everything that came after canon to the universe. I guess Legends is a bit of a mess, but kinda feels like a little too much to just outright name them non-canon). There are more than like SW 500 comic books and novels, and countless games, like Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel Jedi: Survivor, which apparently is in hot water right now for having a terrible performance especially on PC, although the game is great apart from that, from what I've heard, and the 4 Battlefront games, confusingly named Battlefront, Battlefront II, Battlefront, and Battlefront II coming out in 2004, 2005, 2015 and 2017, Star Wars Knight Of The Old Republic (KOTOR) games, the LEGO Skywalker Saga, you get the point, Star Wars has a boatload (more like Titanic-load) of media, leading to an extremely fleshed out world.
Characters
Of course, Star Wars is known for its lovable and iconic characters. There's of course, Luke.
Tumblr media
A farm boy who discovers he is the son of a Jedi Knight and goes on to save the galaxy from the tyranny of the Empire. Luke's journey from a naive and idealistic youth to a seasoned warrior and leader is one of the central themes of the original Star Wars trilogy which definitely wasn’t ruined by Disney. Just look at this:
youtube
There are also longer compilations, Mark Hamill dropped so many hints lmao.
Tumblr media
Han Solo is another fan favourite, a charming smuggler who joins Luke & Co. on their journey. Han's wit, bravery, and devil-may-care (which, as I recently found out, is a cooler way to say “Who cares?”) attitude make him one of the most endearing characters in the franchise.
Tumblr media
Darth Vader is undeniably one of the best villains ever put to screen. His whole character arc throughout the 6 movies and the comics is very awesome while tragic. Special shoutout to James Earl-Jones who was the voice behind Darth Vader who helped turn him into the iconic villain we all know and love.
Tumblr media
Obi-Wan Kenobi is another tragic character. He serves as a mentor to both the OT and PT protagonists and sees far too many deaths of loved ones and betrayals. He is personally my favourite human character (dw R2-D2, you’ll be my favourite forever).
Yoda, while not having too much screen time, is still very popular. He is an alien of the [REDACTED] species and the most powerful Jedi Knight. He also has a unique sentence structure of Object-Subject-Verb while speaking serves George Lucas’s purpose of making him even more intriguing. The infant of Yoda’s species featured in The Mandalorian has been fan-dubbed Baby Yoda and he IS ADORABLE
Tumblr media
AHHH SOMEONE BUY ME A PLUSHIE I NEED IT.
The Mandalorian is also an awesome character. Pedro Pascal is awesome in the role and I love he can still emote while having his helmet on for 99% of the show. He's a member of the creed of The Mandalore, he's a bounty hunter, extremely loyal to his creed, and most importantly, very, very badass. I'm not very critical of things, but the helmet, oh, I could rant for hours, but that's a story for another day.
Okay, uhh, sorry it's a bit of a ramble than more of a love letter that I was hoping for, but hope you enjoyed it. See you next Thursday if you don't forget, and
