Happy Mother's Day!

(for those who celebrate and for the countries it's celebrated in. I know that not everybody does).

The mothers of Magi are great. I don't necessarily mean all good. The quality (how good they are as mothers) ranges largely from amazing to Gyokuen. That, in itself, is amazing. I like to see parents that aren't the same note, whether good or bad. It's also nice with the variety of mothers especially.

I want to take the time on focusing on one of them, and my conclusion that the most interesting character study in this regard is Scheherazade.

She is a deeply flawed person in this regard. She's a shit mother for the majority of the time with Titus. However, I do not believe it is intentional on her part, or something that she even recognizes right away.

I want to make clear before I get too deep into this that I still love Scheherazade as a character, and this isn't an attack against her but more so an examination of how her motherhood compares to being decent and how it doesn't.

The root of the problem is Scheherazade is the parent who just expects her children to be like her. So much so that she ignores all the agency that they have to be their own person, which will determine that they have different things to give a shit about, ones that do not align with hers.

This makes sense as she makes them as clones, to do something she cannot or else the main one to keep her youth. They are her in the most literal sense. Titus has had self-awareness sustained to where he develops his own thoughts and perspectives. Then Scheherazade doesn't recognize it right away. Eventually, but not right away.

The second flaw for Scheherazade being a good mother is that she loves Reim and the nation she fostered to a fault.

Again, this is something that she recognizes and relents to after being confronted with it. That the love of the country she helped foster and built is actually fucked in some ways. That maybe, quite possibly, being an imperialist slave-trading/owning state is fucked. No shit. How does this impact on how she's a mother to Titus? She uses him as a rally to her troops when invading Magnoshutatt. Scheherazade acts as if he was kidnapped, and that a goal of taking Magnoshutatt is to take him back and bring him to safety. Since it is a message given to the whole battlefield, Titus does hear it and recognizes the bullshit, not that any of the Reim soldiers can see him.

That is messed up to use your authority over a child (or anyone dependent on you) as a reason to harm anyone else and acting like the child endorses the behavior. If someone is fighting for someone else, with the knowledge and consent of that person, yeah, that's cool. If it's defending someone else, like someone standing in between one party and danger, yup, checks out. Using someone else and their perceived safety to actively attack someone, when you know explicitly that goes against their wishes. Nope, not cool.

Some precise examples outside the broad strokes:

When Titus is reporting to Scheherazade, He goes off topic since he is a child who is finally able to be out and about in the vibrancy of the world. That is what he focuses on. She dismisses him and tell Titus to get to the point. It is understandable from her position, but it is unnecessarily harsh. For Titus, he is talking to his mother and hoping to get positive affirmation with sharing his experience. The best case I can describe Scheherazade is she treats him more like an employee. Not an inaccurate descriptor, but Titus is clearly distraught and thrown off guard from the dismissal and Scheherazade shows nothing in addressing it.

That's an awful look for her. However, when meeting up again she tells Titus he should go back to Marga after telling him their lifespan is almost out. He seems taken aback that Scheherazade remembered her. She paid attention to some degree and could guess what he would want to do at the end of his life.

The second is when she overrides her rukh with his to stop Titus from Falling. It is an emergency situation, and her safety is as at risk as much as his. That said completely ignoring his bodily autonomy is uncalled for. Scheherazade does not leave it at that. She takes the opportunity to threaten Mogamett and his country while possessing a child's body. Same as above when I mentioned her using Titus as a reason to be an imperial bitch, this time manipulating Titus quite literally.

All that said, I do see Scheherazade as a decent mother. Why? I think what separates her from say Gyokuen, or Aum Madura, is that she is ignorant on Titus being his own person. She's not used to her clones to have the degree of autonomy that Titus has. She treats him as an employee and extension of herself but despite it all I have never felt malicious intent. It doesn't excuse her, but it is understandable. Unlike the latter two, who fully know they are destroying children's lives for their benefit and have no compassion for them.

Scheherazade lets him go. She apologies to Titus, and he does not have to forgive her. He does because he's precious, and he sees her as someone who was his anchor and who told him about how wonderful the world was before he could see it. Titus was so hurt by her coldness because he believed she cared. She shows she does. Scheherazade is heartbroken and furious when she realizes that Titus died and used the last of his energy to try to save Mogamett.

What she does, at the end of the day, is give up her prolonged life as a reborn magi. She has lived long enough and recognized her flaws in being conservative and stuck in her ways while passionately loving the country she fostered. None of that matters though because her goal and final desire is to give her child life. The cost is meaningless. And of course Ugo listens. It is the same promise he fulfilled for Sheba with Aladdin. Kids are all right. And they deserve to live.

I think Scheherazade is one of the most interesting characters in Magi. I wanted the opportunity to talk about this part of her. Once more I need to mention how I love the mothers in Magi. A lot of the time, there's a crapload of breakdowns and devotions on how father's can differ, especially in a male targeted demographic like shounen. Not that there isn't the same for the father's in Magi (honestly there's more to pick at for father's in Sinbad no Bouken imo). The best in the main series is Sinbad and Alibaba. And I'm okay with that. Don't think I will have the time to have a similar breakdown by Father's Day. Maybe another time then.

-Alibaba, Aladdin, and Morgiana all refer to each other as Big/Little Brother/Sister. They're all siblings and you can pry that from my cold dead hands

-Hakuei has a habit of calling everyone 'baby' or 'sweetie' or 'babe' or 'bao' or 'baobei', just pet names in general. With her actual significant other the pet name would be something based on their name

-Hakuryuu and Kougyoku are one of the best and strongest Ren sibling duo PERIODT. Empress and her loyal General dynamic, the babies of the family but they have THE tightest bond

-Pisti and Masrur have tea parties every Thursday. Sometimes Masrur brings Sadi and Pisti will dress her up, and then she'll insist they all need to be dressed up and then all of a sudden Masrur's in sparkly dress. He's completely fine with this because it makes Sadi smile and that's the one thing he always strives to do for her

-Yamraiha once told Sharrkan that he 'looked like he reads at a third grade level' and for some reason it made him start crying

-Kougyoku knows disturbing facts about the ocean, Hakuryuu knows disturbing facts about bugs and plants and bones, Judar knows disturbing facts about space

-Whenever Marga draws something, Titus and Sphintus put it up on the fridge. When there was no more room on the fridge, they bought a whole new fridge

-Morgiana and Alibaba take turns helping Aladdin braid and brush his hair. Alibaba actively tries to help Aladdin figure out how to do it himself while Morgiana mostly just wants to get it over with. Before coming to the real world Aladdin didn't really take care of his hair very well, but he cherishes these moments with Alibaba and Morgiana more than anything

-idk if I've mentioned this before but Alibaba is absolutely THAT annoying bitch when it comes to chai. Never say 'chai tea' in front of this motherfucker if you don't want a twenty-minute lecture

Back in the living room Ja'far: Ah...um...Sin? Sinbad gets up with a bloodied face. Sinbad: I see how it is, sis. You would even hurt me for trying to stop you from kissing him...Cuz that's just how badly you want to smear your lips all over this guy! Sinbad breaks down crying. Sinbad: I was a fool to think I was testing you. What was really being tested were my own feelings. Kouen: Hey, uh, you know you're bleeding, right? Sinbad: Ren Kouen! For now my sister's lips are all yours. Ja'far: Wh-what?!?!?! Ja'far slaps Sinbad again, spiraling him back into the wall. Ja'far: What are you talking about?! Ja'far turns away, and cries into palms. Sinbad: Well. I'll let you win this round. But don't forget... Kouen: Bleeding...still... Kouen: *thinking* Is this just normal for them? Ja'far: Are you alright, Sin? You look like you're about to fall over. Kouen: ...you're one to talk... Sinbad: Hey! You're about to collapse. They collapse on each other and hold each other up. Ja'far: Should I call you a taxi? Sinbad: I said I'm fine. You are such a worrywart. Kouen: Oh...Woah there. Sinbad and Ja'far wobble, but Kouen helps them stay up. Sinbad glares at Kouen. Magi Characters in MHA

Marga: Quirk: Cryosleep- Allows her to put anyone under a cryogenic sleep, lowering their body temperature, and slowing their metabolism and heart beat.

Drawback- The low temperatures cause problems for her own heart and metabolism. This causes her heart to occasionally stop completely, causing heart attacks and seizures on occasion. She also has a hard time digesting certain foods due to her weakened immune system.

Her and Eri are like glue and do EVERYTHING together. She stays with Aizawa as well because the use of her quirk affects her health. Titus might as well live there too with how often he visits, not to mention Sphintus and Aladdin.

Aladdin: Quirk: Solomon's Wisdom- Allows him to pull himself and the affectee into a mind domain where he learns about the affects and drawbacks of the affectee's quirk and is able to disable the affectee's quirk from within the mind domain.

Drawback- Can only use it every so often. Use causes Migraines and physical exhaustion.

He's not old enough to apply for any high schools so he'll occasionally stow away to UA with Morgiana or Alibaba. Probably enjoys talking about girls with Kaminari

Morgiana: Quirk: Fanalis- A hereditary quirk that gives her immense strength throughout her entire body, especially her lower body.

Drawback- Physical exhaustion with over use.

She's a first year student at UA (her high ranking during the entrance exam allowed for her to get into 1-A). She mostly concentrates on becoming stronger to help improve Alibaba's skills. Both her and Aladdin want Alibaba to become the #1 hero after he graduates.

Sphintus: Quirk: Healing Time Skip- Allows Sphintus to heal wounds of allies, but he can also "unheal" enemies. Reopening wounds from a maximum of a year. (possibly longer with training)

Drawback- Using his quirk also affects him. So if he decides to "unheal" someone he risks reopening any of his own recent wounds.

Sphintus is a first year student at UA, but due to his disadvantage during the entrance exam, he only managed to get into 1-B. Totally has a group of other kids that he smokes with after class. Although his 'smoking buddies' aren't particularly found of the snake that he keeps with him at all times.

Titus: Quirk: Natural Simulation- Titus is able to simulate rare natural disasters using any nearby resource including some non natural sources.

Drawbacks- His quirk has very little damage control and can easily get out of hand. Restraining said disasters can cause physical and mental fatigue. If he loses control of a natural disaster he creates, not even he is safe.

Titus is obviously a member of class 1-A at UA. After all, he IS an Alexius. To be anything less would be disgraceful to his name. He is 100% dedicated to his studies. Everyone else in his class is merely a distraction. That is until a young, little blue-haired boy stows away with that pink-haired girl in his class with super strength during quirk training and skews his plans. Not to mention the white-haired imbecile that keeps a pet snake as an accessory.

Hakuryuu: Quirk: Bio-disruption- This quirk allows the user to manipulate any nearby plant life, be it tree roots to nasturtiums in a nearby garden. Not only can he manipulate their movement, but also their growing patterns, allowing him to enlarge the plants at will as well.

Drawbacks- He cannot revert anything that he grows to it's original state. It causes for a bit of clean up.

Hakuryuu is in class 2-A. Todoroki is basically his best friend. (They met during a combined quirk training session and bonded over their childhood trauma)

Kougyoku: Quirk: Water Manipulation- This quirk allows the user to manipulate any nearby bodies of water. If enough water can be retrieved water based natural disasters such as tsunamis and title waves can be created and manipulated.

Drawbacks- Over exhaustion can cause lose of control.

Kougyoku is a third year student at UA in class 3-A. Her and Nejirie are very close.

Alibaba: Quirk: Flame Manipulation- Alibaba is able to use open flame and use heat sources to create fire that he can manipulate. Due to the nature of his quirk he is also flame/heat resistant.

Drawbacks- overuse can cause blisters, dehydration, and burns up to the third degree.

Alibaba is in the same class at UA with Kougyoku and Mirio, class 3-A. Due to Mirio and Alibaba both having louder personalities and being sunshine personified, they gravitated to each other naturally.

Judar: Quirk: Overcast- This quirk allows the user to manipulate both shadows and anything natural that is a dark color such as clouds, or dark colored plants.

Drawbacks- If overused the user will be consumed by the shadows that they manipulated, although it is escapable.

Judar grew up shunned do to the nature of his quirk, he was seen as evil and a danger to society. He was constantly bullied for this and told that he would grow up to be a villain. To his credit he didn't waste his time hurting them, (despite how much he might have wanted to), but no one would give him recognition for something so miniscule. Judar was basically forced to go to UA to keep an eye on Hakuryuu when he finally joined. He easily made it in and is currently in class 3-A. He is determined to make sure that Hakuryuu is #1 hero after he graduates.

Pisti: Quirk: Ethologenius- This quirk not only allows the user to communicate with animals, but also allows the user to sense the moods and habits of animals.

Drawbacks- Occasionally if the user communicates with animals for too long without human contact, they will temporarily lose the ability to communicate to humans.

Pisti is another member of UA's class 3-A. She's very happy with he standing with her classmates, (she's especially close to Nejire and Kougyoku). She would also consider herself close with Kouji Kouda. She immediately made it her mission to get to know him after learning that their quirks were so similar.

Kouha: Quirk: Magnicrystalization- allows the user to both crystalize and manipulate the size of any object. Both organic, and inorganic.

Drawbacks- Enlarging things to much can cause physical strain. He also has to be careful when crystalizing things because ANYTHING can be crystalized. Organic organisms can be reverted their previous state, but it's a long pain-staking process.

Kouha is the gossip QUEEN of UA. He knows everything about everyone and has dirt on anybody he needs to. However, he only gossips about people he's not fond of.

Hakuei: Quirk: Wind manipulation- This quirk allows the user to manipulate wind and wind-based disasters such as tornados and twisters.

Drawbacks- Overuse can cause physical exhaustion resulting in lose of control.

Hakuei is in the top 100 ranking of pro-heroes, but she spends most of her time at a day-care she discretely started to take care of the small children of pro-heroes. She often uses her quirk to entertain the kids, using small gusts of wind to make toys move as she pleases.

Spartos: Quirk: Stealth- The user is able to pass by both friend and foe alike, undetected.

Drawbacks- It has a passive affect and sometimes people forget he's present.

Spartos graduated from 3-B of UA a few years ago and has been trying to climb his way up the pro-hero ladder ever since.

Yamraiha: Quirk: Hydromanipulation- This quirk is a more advanced version of Water Manipulation and does not require a body of water. Other water sources such as Humidity in the air and clouds can be used as well.

Drawbacks- User is highly prone to dehydration, leading to exhaustion.

Yamraiha has been a teacher teaching at UA for the last three years. She started out as a teacher's aid, but now has her own class on quirk control.

Masrur: Quirk- Fanalis- A hereditary quirk that gives him immense strength throughout his entire body, especially his lower body.

Drawback- Physical exhaustion with over use.

Masrur aloofly graduated from UA's class 3-A and quickly ended up in the top 50 ranking of pro-heroes. Sinbad cares more about his 'amazing' status than he does.

Jafar: Quirk: Assassination- This quirk allows for the user to see the best way to kill, or fatally injure someone. With practice, non-fatal wounds can be perceived as well.

Drawbacks- Killing people is bad.

Jafar graduated from Class 3-A as well, and is ranked within the top 10 pro-heroes. No one is quite sure how he up ranked so quickly... Jafar is openly determined about Sinbad being the #1 hero.

Koumei: Quirk: Mirror- Similar to the LOV member Kurogiri, Koumei is able to create portals from one place to another, (being that he is familiar with the place and person teleporting.), the difference being that Koumei can teleport himself, inanimate objects, and create mirror dimensions that he can imprison people within.

Drawbacks- A great amount of physical and mental strength is required for Koumei to release anyone from his mirror dimensions, including himself.

Koumei graduated from class 3-A as well, with flying colors in fact. He currently works as the Librarian at UA, (oblivious to his very high hero ranking), He spends most of his time in the library reading. He enjoys his job, although, he gets mildly annoyed when someone interrupts what he's reading.

Sharrkan: Quirk: Master- This quirk allows for the user to master any weapon used in hand to hand combat. Swords, daggers, kunai, etc.

Drawbacks- If the user does not regularly practice with a weapon, he will "unlearn" how to use it.

Sharrkan graduated from class 3-A, passing by the skin of his teeth. Any classes that had to do with his quirk he did fine in, but he got bored, and didn't pay attention in any other classes, only being able to pass because Yamraiha was nice enough to help him. Sharrkan is now ranked in the top 20 for pro-heroes, and thinks that that makes him "epicly epic".

Kouen: Quirk: Pyromanipulation- This is a slightly more advanced version of Flame Manipulation, a open flame/heat source is not required and it allows the user to cause friction between molecules resulting in flame, and occasionally (quite often) explosions. The user can manipulate any flames caused by this. Due to the nature of his quirk he is also flame/heat resistant.

Drawbacks- Overuse can cause dehydration and burns up to the second degree.

Kouen graduated from Class 3-A with flying colors, and never misses a chance to hold it above his siblings' heads like an overly sweet treat for "motivation". He is in the top 10 ranking for pro-heroes, but one ranking behind Sinbad, which drives him mad to no end. He has made it his life's mission to become the #1 hero.

Drakon: Quirk: Dragon born- This quirk allows for its user to transform from a human into a bonafide dragon. Fire, wings an' all.

Drawbacks- Sudden transformation can cause for heart and chest problems, along with joint and muscle pain.

Drakon went to UA and graduated from 3-A, wanting to spite his brother. He's now a pro-hero in the top 20 and is quite close to the Dragon hero Romagi.

Sinbad: Quirk: Seven- This quirk gives the user abilities from 7 different categories, one being illusion, one being power, etc.

Drawbacks- Only one category can be used at a time, and each use requires a recovery time. Overuse can lead to physical exhaustion.

Sinbad obviously graduated from UA, Class 3-A. He immediately made it to the top ten rankings, but one pro-hero ranking above Kouen, which he constantly flaunts. His main mission is to become the #1 hero.

Hinahoho: Quirk: Poseidon- This quirk gifts Hinahoho with adept swimming capabilities, allowing for him to have an advantage while fighting underwater. It also provides him with whale like skin, allowing less friction through water. He also has 80% more protein in his muscles, allowing for them to hold more oxygen. Due to this Hinahoho can hold his breath for over an hour. Along with cold resistance.

Drawbacks- Hinahoho has large weaknesses to both hot and overly dry weather.

Hinahoho graduated from Class 3-A as well. He is also a pro-hero in the top twenty. Hinahoho is a powerful, helpful hero, by night, but a very loving, caring dad during the day. He wants to be present in his kids' life as much as possible, so he stays at home unless completely necessary.

Arba: Quirk: Reincarnation- This quirk allows the user's soul to pass into another vessel after their physical body dies.

Drawbacks- The new vessel must be prechosen before death, and must be as closely related to the current vessel as possible.

Although Gyokuen's quirk is not very useful in the standings of pro-heroes, she still somehow holds a position of power. Most likely due to her late husband and powerful children that she lives through.

Scheherazade: Quirk: Cloning- Similar to the villain Twice, along with Pro-Hero, and fellow teacher, Ectoplasm, Scheherazade is able to make clones of herself. However, Scheherazade's clones are not exact copies of herself and have their own life spans. Her pro-hero status means nothing to her, although she wants her son to succeed as a hero.

Drawbacks- Scheherazade is only able to make a VERY limited amount of clones, two or three probably being her max.

Scheherazade has been teaching since before UA was standing, and will probably continue to teach English long after it's gone.

Yunan: Quirk: Diffusion- Yunan is able to diffuse his cells allowing for him to seemingly "disappear". He can travel at any altitude while diffused, but he cannot hold the state for song periods of time.

Drawbacks- If Yunan were to stay in his diffused state for too long he would remain trapped in his diffused state. Ageless, and useless.

No one knows when Yunan graduated, or when he started teaching. All anyone besides principle Nezu knows is that he's been at UA Forever. Yunan has no interest in the term "professional hero" his ranking means close to nothing to him. He has taught Biology at UA for as long as anyone can remember. Due to his lack of interest of being a pro-hero, Yunan has a lot of free time, which he uses to tend to his plant babies and tutor students on his own time.

Are the rukh an actual light source? The things my mind gets stuck on repeatedly while working on shit.

The answer would appear to be yes. This is shown when there is enough gathered at one place, usually in a relation with one of the magi using enough magic and producing magoi at a rate to be visible to everyone who can't usually see them. With the exception of Judar, but I'll get to black rukh in a minute. This is usually conveyed through light even if the surroundings are dim. The first time Aladdin is seen really going off is one such occurrence.

I keep thinking to myself. How does rukh produce light when magi using magic isn't involved? Do magicians constantly see hundreds, thousands, of light sources no one else can see? Or is the light so minimal it doesn't make a difference? I like to know what light sources I'm dealing with.

The closest we get for this is with Baba. She sees the world directly through rukh; it is her source of sight. Though tbf, the anime doesn't really touch on her being blind outside of her interaction with rukh. The manga is only a little clearer. Point being, light source or not, it is a way to see and experience the world.

Does that mean that it acts as a sort of passive night vision outside of Baba? Who knows. The one time I can think of an example is that while exploring the fifth district there isn't much light shown outside of some lanterns and dim lights, but Aladdin, Titus and Sphintus don't seem to have much trouble. Meanwhile, Marga and the rest of the citizens there are used to the level of light and don't work really as a control group. So I dunno.

The other conclusion is that it's not the rukh that produce the light. It comes from the magoi that they produce. When Judar explains the magic system to Aladdin (imo, a condescending smartass doing an exposition dump is a surprisingly effective way to deliver information to the audience in a quick manner), he produces magoi to deliver his point. It acts as a bright beacon that everyone reacts to and sees, especially when Judar starts attacking people with it.

I don't really have concluding thoughts on this. It's more of a ramble dump. Good place as any to switch to talk about black rukh.

I kinda dislike in the anime that black rukh is also shown to produce light. A dim purple light typically, but a light nonetheless. One of the reasons I think of to why is so that each is distinguishable in a way. That a mass of black rukh isn't shown to be a massive black blob and nothing else.

I'll end this on a headcanon of mine. I always thought it made more sense for the black rukh to absorb light or at the very least cast a massive shadow. The first impression Aladdin gets from seeing Judar is describing him like a black sun. What would be the cause for someone to come to that conclusion? Mine was that the overwhelming amount of black rukh from Judar would be a blot of darkness until Aladdin can focus on him properly. If it is only dozens of black birds surrounding the guy the description will be less extreme.

An eclipse (what I can attribute to being like a black sun, outside of blackhole) doesn't just cast ordinary shadows. It is putting out the main light source of the planet. It isn't a cloudy day, a storm, or night time during a new moon: the closest other comparison. The darkness of an eclipse hits different. Plus, when Aladdin gets memories about the fall of Alma Tran the sun there looks like it is permanently eclipsed. That's the quickest shorthand to show that it is nothing but darkness all the time.

Anyway, that is how I see Judar and the black rukh in general. They are opposites and out of spite literally and metaphorically counteracts the light from the white rukh.
