a tiny upward shove by melissa chadburn (⭐⭐⭐) - one of the most upsetting books i've ever read :( lots of merit but good lord is it rough
open water by caleb azumah nelson (⭐⭐⭐)
earthlings by sayaka murata (⭐⭐⭐) - competing with a tiny upward shove for most disgusting difficult book to read. this one i almost couldn't complete
kim jiyoung, born 1982 by nam-joo cho (⭐⭐) - this is so overrated. it's not a novel. it's an essay pretending to be a novel.
very nice by marcy dermansky (⭐⭐)
true love by sarah gerard (⭐⭐) - ever wanted to shake some sense into a character before?
spark by naoki matayoshi (⭐⭐)
people from my neighborhood by hiromi kawakami (⭐⭐)
the doll by ismail kadare (⭐)
literary fiction published 1971-2014

midnight's children by salman rushdie (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

woman at point zero by nawal el saadawi (⭐⭐⭐⭐) - read this if you want to get homicidally angry :)
lion cross point by masatsugu ono (⭐⭐⭐⭐)

dept. of speculation by jenny offill (⭐⭐⭐⭐) - if i'd ever had to fight for a relationship this would have been a 5 star.
the dangers of smoking in bed by mariana enriquez (⭐⭐⭐⭐)
woman hollering creek and other stories by sandra cisneros (⭐⭐⭐⭐) - cheat code: read this aloud. prose drips off the tongue.
the ten loves of mr. nishino by hiromi kawakami (⭐⭐⭐⭐)
kitchen by banana yoshimoto (⭐⭐⭐⭐)
the divorce by cesar aira (⭐⭐⭐⭐) - 4 stars on the merit of the first part. the rest is probably a 3 star

love by hanne orstavik (⭐⭐⭐⭐)
too loud a solitude by bohumil hrabal (⭐⭐⭐)
the factory by hiroko oyamada (⭐⭐⭐)

sleepless nights by elizabeth hardwick (⭐⭐⭐)
the story of my teeth by valeria luiselli (⭐⭐) - cool concept. unsure about the execution.
interpreter of maladies by jhumpa lahiri (⭐⭐)
battles in the desert by jose emilio pacheco (⭐⭐) - should have been a novel not a novella. it ends right as it starts to gain steam
literary fiction published start of time-1970
the passion according to g.h. by clarice lispector (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - favorite book of the year!!!! an existential crisis on paper!!!!
japanese tales of mystery & imagination by edogawa rampo (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - the 1st short story in this is insane! insane! the chair! i'm screaming!
miramar by naguib mahfouz (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

the blind owl by sadegh hedayat (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - pinnacle of slow descent into madness fiction...or it's not that slow i guess
pedro paramo by juan rulfo (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)
the turn of the screw by henry james (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - would have been 4 stars, but i read an edition with lit crit essays in the back and it was so fun to read the "but are the ghosts real?" discourses that i had to give it that extra star
i am a cat by natsume soseki (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - if soseki ever described my physical appearance in writing i'd promptly perish. he eviscerates people. dear god.
giovanni's room by james baldwin (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)
the old man and the sea (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)
the interpreters by wole soyinka (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - i don't even know what i like about this book. bad characters, no plot, confusing prose. and yet...it's got a rhythm. it possessed me.

genre fiction from all time
the fifth season by n.k. jemisin (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - STUNNING
the invisible life of addie larue by v.e. schwab (⭐⭐⭐⭐) - i usually don't care for fantasy and hated the other v.e. schwab i read, so this was a nice surprise. it lost me at points but ultimately regained me. deals with the devil are my kryptonite.
a court of mist and fury by sarah j. maas (⭐⭐⭐) - i get the hype. hard to criticize because its faults are what make it so good to others. i liked a lot of it.

almond by sohn won-pyung (⭐⭐⭐)

city of refuge by kenzo kitakata (⭐⭐)

Booklist
My current booklist, with a little over 200 books total, some of which I am currently reading and two that I've finished. Everything will be in alphabetical order and below the cut because this is gonna be a long one.
Please also keep in mind that there may be issues with the listed writers or books that I don't know (I don't really inhabit spaces where I'd find this information out and googling every book or writer I find to see if they're controversial is depressing and I'm not doing that). I'd still like to know though so if you see someone on my list give me a heads up.

Writing can be a form of absolute play; you never know what you are going to write. Even if you have an outline, you still don’t know. Your fingers may betray you. And literally everything that has ever happened to you is material...Yes, editing and revision is hard. Yes, creating a plot that is cohesive, and makes the reader want to turn the pages, can be hard. And when I get stuck—and I do—I sometimes write pages that are flat-out boring. My characters go out for turkey sandwiches and swim more laps than they need to. The boring pages are always an indicator that I am on the wrong track. Theses page get cut. Sometimes, you have to write the boring pages and then delete them, to do what the story requires. This, however, is not suffering. This is revision, and revision is also fun. While making a book better, new ideas keep coming in.

Quote
My writer friends were uniformly disdainful of American suburbs. I had been told repeatedly that they were not places for dark-skinned people. That the owners of big houses were hypocrites. That the food was bad. That the great American suburb was a place where one could die of loneliness.

Bad Marie review #BadMarie @mdermansky #MarcyDermansky #books #reading #PopSugarReadingChallenge
Title: Bad Marie Author: Marcy Dermansky Genre: domestic thriller PopSugar Reading Challenge Prompt: The book that’s been on your TBR list for the longest amount of time (according to my Goodreads “to read” shelf) It’s no joke that Marie is bad. But I didn’t hate her at all. She makes some terrible decisions, but it’s pretty clear that she isn’t intending to physically harm anyone. She’s…

So, I published a thing and I thought I’d share it here:
DISCOLORATION: A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES
“DISCOLORATION is a collection of short stories that share a common narrative soul: they are pieces inspired by the magical realism of the author's literary Latin American heritage, in which the real and the surreal were often married to explore various facets of the human condition. These stories are paved with glimmers of hope as well as the most absolute desolation, and they present the reader with a journey through the fantastic and the horrific. Accompanied by stylized black-and-white illustrations, these nightmarish tales weaved together by chilling twists, meaningful catharses, and poetic prose, will captivate readers with their eerie atmosphere and powerful emotion.”
