the turn of the screw by henry james (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - would have been 4 stars, but i read an edition with lit crit essays in the back and it was so fun to read the "but are the ghosts real?" discourses that i had to give it that extra star

i am a cat by natsume soseki (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) - if soseki ever described my physical appearance in writing i'd promptly perish. he eviscerates people. dear god.

the invisible life of addie larue by v.e. schwab (⭐⭐⭐⭐) - i usually don't care for fantasy and hated the other v.e. schwab i read, so this was a nice surprise. it lost me at points but ultimately regained me. deals with the devil are my kryptonite.

a court of mist and fury by sarah j. maas (⭐⭐⭐) - i get the hype. hard to criticize because its faults are what make it so good to others. i liked a lot of it.

Writing can be a form of absolute play; you never know what you are going to write. Even if you have an outline, you still don’t know. Your fingers may betray you. And literally everything that has ever happened to you is material...Yes, editing and revision is hard. Yes, creating a plot that is cohesive, and makes the reader want to turn the pages, can be hard. And when I get stuck—and I do—I sometimes write pages that are flat-out boring. My characters go out for turkey sandwiches and swim more laps than they need to. The boring pages are always an indicator that I am on the wrong track. Theses page get cut. Sometimes, you have to write the boring pages and then delete them, to do what the story requires. This, however, is not suffering. This is revision, and revision is also fun. While making a book better, new ideas keep coming in.
