Today we honor the birth of a visionary who sacrificed his life for the liberation of the oppressed. Marcus Garvey SUFFERED for us. Those who orchestrated his suffering yesterday are the same orchestrators of our suffering today. WE WILL NEVER FORGET! And, furthermore, we will never surrender to the will of our open enemy. We declare today an INTERNATIONAL HOLIDAY for Black people worldwide. Know Your History! Know Your Destiny! #MarcusGarvey

Purpose, Chef
I was listening to a podcast where they wondered why Marcus and Tina would stay with Carmy at The Bear. They don't care about fine dining. That's the thing they may not care about fine dining, but they wanted to care about something, not to mention it is under discussed the way one very passionate and visionary person can rally a lot of people around him.
First it was Mikey, he helped to form the family Carm took over as de facto leader of.
The discussion with Tina and Mikey explains exactly why she would stay.
First she now has the skills to work in another restaurant if she so chooses, but more than that, she saw what Mikey saw in Carmy. Someone who knows what they want out of life and is good at it. People like that are inspiring for better or worse sometimes, and despite Carmy being completely in his trauma relapse bag this season that's still true!
People who have passion attract other people. Not everyone can be good at what they want.
Anyways, that conversation to me unlocks so much of why people stay in Carmy's orbit. Yes it's about family and they have a sense of loyalty to each other as this rag-tag group, but it's also about the way that passion and commitment and talent are magnetic. Carmy is that magnet.

What would happen to sulpicia and athenodora if aro and caius died? (Yeah that's right I'M SICK OF THE ASKS THAT ARE ALL "would the men turn into Marcus if their wives died", TIME TO FLIP THE SCRIPT!!) Would they keep getting high off corin?
I mean, according to Life and Death they pull a Princess Bride and make whoever's next in line the new Aro.
Aro and Caius die, Sulpicia and Athenodora blink at each other and then pull on their respective Aro and Caius wigs, "I am the Dread Pirate Roberts."
Sulpicia then bluffs her way through every trial, claiming to see all sorts of interesting thoughts while Athenodora very convincingly says "I vote death!"
Somehow, nobody notices the switch.
To give a serious answer: if Aro dies, it's almost certainly over for the Volturi. He's the glue, the visionary who brought the coven together and then recruited or turned all the guards. This is really worthy of its own post, but if Aro and Caius are both dead then the Volturi are going into survival mode.
I think two main things happen: one, Marcus and the wives are forced to step up, with all three of them completely out of their depths and not in their best form given they're in mourning, and two, the Volturi keep the deaths of Aro and Caius secret so as to prevent unrest and attempted coups.
With the twins having nowhere else to go and every motivation to stay and see their beloved father figure's vision through 'till the bitter end, the Volturi could theoretically coast along for quite some time, even after the vampire world finds out that Aro and Caius are dead (and have been for some time), but no organisation can survive without a reason to exist and Aro was that reason. The only path to survival is if Marcus and/or the wives can become this instead, but the loss of Didyme's brother could just as easily break whatever is left of Marcus as it could inspire him to do what Aro would have wanted, and the wives could just give in to despair and say yes to Corin.

Nonfiction Recommendations: Jewish American Heritage Month
Black, White and Jewish by Rebecca Walker
The Civil Rights movement brought author Alice Walker and lawyer Mel Leventhal together, and in 1969 their daughter, Rebecca, was born. Some saw this unusual copper-colored girl as an outrage or an oddity; others viewed her as a symbol of harmony, a triumph of love over hate. But after her parents divorced, leaving her a lonely only child ferrying between two worlds that only seemed to grow further apart, Rebecca was no longer sure what she represented. In this book, Rebecca Leventhal Walker attempts to define herself as a soul instead of a symbol—and offers a new look at the challenge of personal identity, in a story at once strikingly unique and truly universal.
Bad Jews by Emily Tamkin
What does it mean to be a Bad Jew? Many Jews use the term “Bad Jew as a weapon against other members of the community or even against themselves. You can be called a Bad Jew if you don’t keep kosher; if you only go to temple on Yom Kippur; if you don’t attend or send your children to Hebrew school; if you enjoy Christmas music; if your partner isn’t Jewish; if you don’t call your mother often enough. The list is endless.
In Bad Jews, Emily Tamkin argues that perhaps there is no answer to this timeless question at all. Throughout American history, Jewish identities have evolved and transformed in a variety of ways. American Jewish history is full of discussions and debates and hand wringing over who is Jewish, how to be Jewish, and what it means to be Jewish. In this book, Emily Tamkin examines the last 100 years of American Jewish politics, culture, identities, and arguments. Drawing on over 150 interviews, she tracks the evolution of Jewishness throughout American history, and explores many of the evolving and conflicting Jewish positions on assimilation; race; Zionism and Israel; affluence and poverty, philanthropy, finance, politics; and social justice. From this complex and nuanced history, Tamkin pinpoints perhaps the one truth about American Jewish It is always changing.
Genius & Anxiety by Norman Lebrecht
In a hundred-year period, a handful of men and women changed the way we see the world. Many of them are well known—Marx, Freud, Proust, Einstein, Kafka. Others have vanished from collective memory despite their enduring importance in our daily lives. Without Karl Landsteiner, for instance, there would be no blood transfusions or major surgery. Without Paul Ehrlich, no chemotherapy. Without Siegfried Marcus, no motor car. Without Rosalind Franklin, genetic science would look very different. Without Fritz Haber, there would not be enough food to sustain life on earth.
What do these visionaries have in common? They all had Jewish origins. They all had a gift for thinking in wholly original, even earth-shattering ways. In 1847 the Jewish people made up less than 0.25% of the world’s population, and yet they saw what others could not. How? Why?
Norman Lebrecht has devoted half of his life to pondering and researching the mindset of the Jewish intellectuals, writers, scientists, and thinkers who turned the tides of history and shaped the world today as we know it. In Genius & Anxiety, Lebrecht begins with the Communist Manifesto in 1847 and ends in 1947, when Israel was founded. This robust, magnificent volume, beautifully designed, is an urgent and necessary celebration of Jewish genius and contribution.
People Love Dead Jews by Dara Horn
Renowned and beloved as a prizewinning novelist, Dara Horn has also been publishing penetrating essays since she was a teenager. Often asked by major publications to write on subjects related to Jewish culture—and increasingly in response to a recent wave of deadly antisemitic attacks—Horn was troubled to realize what all of these assignments had in common: she was being asked to write about dead Jews, never about living ones. In these essays, Horn reflects on subjects as far-flung as the international veneration of Anne Frank, the mythology that Jewish family names were changed at Ellis Island, the blockbuster traveling exhibition Auschwitz, the marketing of the Jewish history of Harbin, China, and the little-known life of the "righteous Gentile" Varian Fry. Throughout, she challenges us to confront the reasons why there might be so much fascination with Jewish deaths, and so little respect for Jewish lives unfolding in the present.
Horn draws upon her travels, her research, and also her own family life—trying to explain Shakespeare’s Shylock to a curious ten-year-old, her anger when swastikas are drawn on desks in her children’s school, the profound perspective offered by traditional religious practice and study—to assert the vitality, complexity, and depth of Jewish life against an antisemitism that, far from being disarmed by the mantra of "Never forget," is on the rise. As Horn explores the (not so) shocking attacks on the American Jewish community in recent years, she reveals the subtler dehumanization built into the public piety that surrounds the Jewish past—making the radical argument that the benign reverence we give to past horrors is itself a profound affront to human dignity.

Out this week: Eye Lie Popeye #1 (Massive, $4.99):
Massive Publishing has picked up some interesting licenses recently, including the rights to make comics starringRey Mysterio and the recent Assassin’s Creed: Visionaries comics. I like that they seem to be taking a different approach to the material, too, like letting creators share their own takes on the Assassin’s Creed franchise, for instance. Which brings me to this title, which is, essentially, a manga-esque take on the famous cartoon sailor Popeye by Marcus Williams. I nhave no idea what it’s going to be like, but it sure looks fun.
See what other comics and graphic novels are arriving at your local comic shop this week.

Wes Anderson Wins First-Ever Oscar with Live Action Short ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar’
The visionary director finally won an Oscar for his first collaboration with Netflix, an ambitious adaptation of a Roald Dahl short story.

Director Wes Anderson attends a photocall for the Netflix movie 'The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar' at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.Kate Green/Getty Images for Netflix
After eight nominations for six different films he has made, director Wes Anderson has finally won his first Oscar.
Receiving the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short for his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” seems unconventional for both the category, which normally awards emerging filmmakers, and Anderson himself, who was best known till this point for directing features such as “Asteroid City” (which happened to also be in awards contention this season.)
His win was over fellow nominees “The After,” from director Misan Harriman, “Invincible,” from director Vincent René-Lortie, “Knight of Fortune,” from director Lasse Lyskjær Noer, and “Red, White and Blue” from director Nazrin Choudhury.
Another win for the director and nothing for the actor that got him there.

Film industry: ' Bounce Marley: One Love' Gets Together $7.4 Million on Friday, 'Madame Web' Falls Behind With $4.3 Million kingsley ben adir sway marley one love Central Pictures/Everett Assortment
Central's "Sway Marley: One Love" proceeded with its run as film industry pioneer through the particular six-day occasion outline, including $7.4 million Friday from 3,539 areas to knock its homegrown count to $25.3 million. The reggae legend's biopic could even surpass Sony's superhero film "Madame Web," which brought in $4.3 million from 4,013 theaters on Friday, after six days. North American take for the Wonder Comics variation presently remains at $12.5 million.
Both films opened on Valentine's Day and hope to continue their momentum through President's Day. On Wednesday, "One Love" established itself with an impressive $14 million, helped along by a few high-end large-format theaters (Madame Web has the majority, though). However the Reinaldo Marcus Green-coordinated show landed unremarkable surveys, it reverberated with early crowds, capturing an "A" grade from assessor Film Score. Principal caused a stir when it drop-kicked the film from an additional honors accommodating January date to the February occasion, yet the film appears to have tracked down an energetic crowd in its new right on the money the schedule. "One Love" conveys a $70 million creation spending plan and extra circulation and promoting costs. The projected six-day homegrown introduction north of $40 million, in addition to a significant worldwide total, is certainly not a terrible spot to "One Love." Given Marley's global appeal, the film is a play for international audiences. It should continue attracting crowds the next few weeks to not stress over a thing.
"One Love" stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley and Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley. The component tracks the performer's European and African visit, as well as the creation of his milestone collection "Mass migration."
"Madame Web" scored far more detestable surveys and some horrendous crowd scores (a "C+" through Film Score). Half a month prior, the independent comic book transformation had been projecting a six-day complete north of $30 million; presently, it'll probably complete nearer to $20 million. It's an unpropitious start up for an undertaking that was logical imagined and created as an establishment starter.
However Sony is a piece less shower with its superhuman financial plans than contenders at Disney and Warner Brothers., a $80 million creation financial plan and extra showcasing costs aren't precisely an unassuming speculation set-up for a secure return. Furthermore, memes that refer to Sony's less-than-stellar track record among superhero fans reinforce the rejection of "Madame Web," making it practically a separate online culture (see: Morbius, a vampire action film starring Jared Leto "Madame Web" might not be able to overcome the negative publicity.
Dakota Johnson stars in "Madame Web" as a that paramedic she has visionary capacities and starts to safeguard a threesome of young people from the wall-creeping executioner that killed her mom. Sydney Sweeney, Tahar Rahim, Isabela Merced, Celeste O'Connor, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott and Zosia Mamet ("Young ladies") likewise star. S.J. Clarkson coordinates.
"Argylle" will probably tumble to third place, extending a 32% fall in its third end of the week. The production produced by Apple Studios has proven to be the year's first well-known failure. The film, which has a big cast and cost the tech company more than $200 million, won't even make $40 million in the US in its first 17 days of release.
Even after its holiday debut, Universal's "Migration" is still challenging for third place. The Brightening creation ought to push to $116 million homegrown as the day progressed. Theaters will at last get another high-profile energized film for family crowds with "Kung Fu Panda 4" on Walk 8.
Understand Occasion's arrival of the religious television series "The Picked" could push "Wonka" out of the best five in its tenth few days of delivery. The Timothée Chalamet melodic keeps on being a reasonable attract an extremely peaceful commercial center, logical adding another $4 million or so through the four-day occasion outline. Homegrown count ought to before long hit $210 million, somewhat away from outperforming "Insect Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" ($214 million) to turn into the seventh-most noteworthy netting North American arrival of 2023.

"CUT MY HEART OUT" by daine
DV:
At first I wondered why "CUT MY HEART OUT" sounded so Charli-esque, but looking at the producer credits clarified: Marcus Andersson worked with Rina Sawayama and Ashnikko; Casey MQ has done a bunch of songs with Dorian Electra. Of course this sounds like Charli - and specifically Charli's work with SOPHIE - because all the rest of them do too. It's been three years since SOPHIE's tragic death and you still can't miss the influence of the work SOPHIE left behind, solo but especially with Charli. And this makes sense! Their work was visionary and unmistakable; I may not have loved it but I respected it. But that means that when I hear second-wave echoes of it now, I wonder why these artists can't push themselves a little harder - it's been three years, surely there's gotta be some path forward. "CUT MY HEART OUT" is catchy as anything off the Vroom Vroom EP and daine is working to say something about heartbreak by using medical terminology, but the production means they mostly sound like they're spooning out someone else's leftovers.
MG:
Making "CUT MY HEART OUT" TikTok length means that the song is totally devoid of depth of any kind. It's got just enough runway to establish a metaphor and then it's gone, a dot on the horizon line. "CUT MY HEART OUT" is actively forgettable as it plays -- the production is a rote hyperpop mass manufacture complete with robotic drums and ersatz glitches and daine's voice is so pitch-shifted they could be literally anyone singing. The only even faint glimmer of something slightly more than lukewarm microwaved leftovers is the vaguely horrific hospital imagery of the second verse, but even there we'd be better served if yeule was the lyricist.
