Al Jarreau/Mas que nada

“Wayne Shorter: Zero Gravity” Launches Aug. 25 on Prime Video
- “Jazz is like saying, ‘Once upon a time …’ and then filling in the blanks,” titular musician says in trailer
For Wayne Shorter, music was like a fairy tale of sorts.
“Jazz is like saying, ‘Once upon a time …’ and then filling in the blanks,” the saxophonist says in the trailer for “Wayne Shorter: Zero Gravity,” the documentary that premieres Aug. 25 on Prime Video. Shorter died earlier this year and the release date coincides with the 90th anniversary of his birth.
The three-part doc is directed by Dorsay Alavi and executive produced by Brad Pitt and Carlos Santana.
“Wayne Shorter made the invisible, visible to music fans worldwide for over six decades,” Alavi said in a statement.
“To know Wayne Shorter is to experience the sounds he created. His music conjures images, emotions and transcendent moments that defy words. ‘Zero Gravity’ is … a term that Wayne used for his approach to any creative venture; a weightless exploration that unifies us without being bound to any expected or tried-and-true outcome.”
Santana, Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell, Marcus Miller, Esperanza Spalding and Neil deGrasse Tyson are among the interviewees featured in the film.
“Wayne Shorter is the most influential person in my musical life,” Tyson says in the trailer.

Should these records that make their players noticeable again after a long time be held under a different standard then? Miles Davis, for instance, still did his own thing, though he wasn't sure what the latter was on The Man With The Horn. True, he did define himself better on his consequent 80's records, delegating his comeback to a warm-up. Then again, him doing that does make sense, he was semi-retired before the LP and jazz is like a sport, i.e. one needs to train to be better. Moreover, the band he found for the disc did serve him well – one of the greatest qualities by Davis was locating the best collaborators –, but I think they were in awe of him, which results in the already mentioned warm up tone of the platter. Still, aren't many released after the hiatuses like that?
