Eurovision 2002 - Number 2 - Alexia - "Dimmi come…"

I mean, just wow.

Compare any song from Eurovision 2002 to this. I think Alexia would have blown the doors off the Saku Suurhall in Tallinn. She probably wouldn't have even needed the microphone. It starts off all ramshackle and bluesy, but the she hits that note and the bounce begins. If you're a backing singer stuck up in the back row of the Sanremo orchestra, this is the sort of song that you must be absolutely looking forward to all evening.

Alexia doesn't even need the bulk of the orchestra, at least until she hits the bridge and breakdown. This is the kind of song and performance that you can't help but stand up and cheer with a huge smile plastered all over your face. It shows what Eurovision is missing with Italy's absence. Holy moly. Let's rewind a bit.

Alexia isn't new to this game. She's got a recording history. Starting off in the UK of all places. She's had numerous hits including a top 10 UK hit, several Italian and European number 1 singles nearly all Eurodance and club floor fillers of the late 1990s. She's even on the Trainspotting soundtrack - she's the vocalist on Ice MCs Don't You Know. Nearly all her hits are in English, though her success is international. She's even released exclusive singles in both Finland and Brazil by this point.

Then 2002 happened. She started singing in Italian, ditched full-on Eurodance, and made her very first appearance at Sanremo - this appearance. Her focus became far more strongly directed towards her native Italian market.

Instant success - Dimmi come... (Tell Me How) finished second in the competition and won the Volare award for Best Music at her first attempt. The song was written by Alexia and Massimo Marcolini, with whom she began working the year prior. The single hits number 1 in Italy, going gold within four days of its release An English language version of this, titled Don't You Know was released internationally. Alexia is one of those artists I don't want to talk too much about in the future because (spoilers!) she does very well. Safe to say she'll almost certainly feature in future top 48s.

As a calling card for the national music festival scene, Dimmi come... is a track and a performance that's hard to top. Although I've only got it at number 2... What can possibly have beaten this?

I am well. Truly. I do find myself alone more often than not, but I assure you, I am not lonely. Hogwards is treating me better than I deserve, really. 

I do seem to have acquired a second shadow. Potter is watching me again. I feel his eyes on me wherever I go. It is quite disconcerting, though nothing I'm not used to.

[Music is a very big part of my life and I’m MOSTLY INCAPABLE of writing without music, so I just thought I'd share what I am listening to while writing this]

… not.

Singles day is actually November 11, as in 11/11, as in 1 - 1 - 1 - 1, as in single, single, single and; SINGLE. LONG TIME AGO, a very young-uni-student-Marengo, somehow, mistakenly read today to be singles day, but in fact today is Singles Awareness Day 🤡LOL. So the joke is on me, but matter 👏🏾 does 👏🏾 not 👏🏾! Marengo shall privately keep celebrating Singles Day on the 15th of February because every time she had, she did on today’s date. Granted, I hadn’t had to celebrate it for a long-long minute, but … here I am in 2024.

Granted I’m a bit rusty but, what I always used to do, without fail was:

Haven’t got around watching Magic Mike XXL yet as I’m here writing to you all duh, but here is a picture of the first 2 points.

The bottle didn't come with that neck piece, I put that there because you could see me in the reflection; don't mess with my camera game! 😎

So before anybody starts, I’m not celebrating today because I’m bitter at people who are in love or a couple. I might have been, A LONG TIME AGO, when I started celebrating this day, but as I grew up, it became more of a luxurious and pampering habit, particularly once I realised, and gradually understood, just how beautiful love actually is. And then, when it became my time to experience it 🎊🎉🪄, yeah … LOVE IS A BEAUTIFUL THING. In fact, I actually love LOVE. I love watching people fall in love, I love just the feeling of love itself, you could even say that I love the thought of a love potential, just as much as I love the potential of a love thought … 😜.

But just like a beautiful rose, love can hurt, no matter how careful, unexpected/unseen thorns can still get you. Yet, you shouldn't hate the rose, right? “I gotta be more careful …” that should be the brains immediate reaction, but sometimes, the amygdala works real hard, with unpaid overtime, keeping us away from roses until we figure out how to better tackle them, and some other times, it just makes us give up on roses entirely, which is a shame but it is what it is sometimes, because roses are really so so so precious, no matter what your favourite flower might happen to be. My favourite flowers are Forget-me-nots, but I will never deny the charm of a rose and I’ve learned to not hate them through time, even when, or even though, I might be deadass afraid of them.

Falling in love is like deciding to take care of your own personal rose/s. You will naturally like many different flowers and will naturally nurture them, rightfully so. Yet, at the same time, there might come a time when you’ll desire to also cherish in having a rose. Some might want roses to boast at their beauty, some simply like a challenge, but all in all, for many, if they could only manage to take care of even just one singular rose, for as long as they possibly can, without it dying; they’d consider it a great achievement and I'd agree. Roses don’t smell like boo-boo, but without LEC (Love, Effort and Care) they are indeed hard to keep, and will quickly perish.

… So what does this have to do with Singles / Singles Awareness Day?! Bitch you are making me feel much worse than before! Like STFU FR. There is a reason why I watch Magic Mike XXL. I really don’t give two shits about the first magic Mike, like I don’t even remember it. Yet XXL ⚠️SPOILER ALERT⚠️ Has as a main plot the main character not ending with whom he thought was the love of his life, right from the start, and instead discovering the value of having a solid community and believing in one’s self ⚠️ END OF SPOILER ⚠️ helps me remind myself that if I am unable to find a rose to take care of, or if I am not ready to do so either, I should remember that I myself am a rose and I should treat myself as such; with love, effort and care.

So today isn't a day where I hate those who have found and are bravely keeping love. No. Today is a day where I think of what could be, mourn what could have been and remember that the me of now also deserves love in the form of macrons, expensive wine and a feel good movie. So if you are single, have been for a while, or always have been, try not to obsess over having that garden of roses. Take care of your flowers first, make sure they are healthy! I’ve neglected “my forget-me-nots” for a bit too long now, so I have some cathcin gup to do, and don’t forget you are a rose yourself; take good care of yourself, be kind to yourself; love yourself.

Important choice lies ahead: neuhaus or marcolini special edition easter chocolates?

neuhaus:

this years theme: berry

this years flavours: blueberry, sea buckthorn, blackberry, redcurrant, cranberry

marcolini:

flavours: pistachio, pecan, brownie, sable breton, marzipan, speculos

Marcolini does nuanced and complex pralines but their easter collection is usually a bit boring and they are doing two biscuit flavours this year, including the dreaded speculoos.

Neuhaus does good but very basic commercial pralines, the ones you eat and go 'yeah that sure is chocolate'. However, their easter collections are bold and flavorful. especially last year with two flavour combination in a single egg (pepper yuzu my beloved)

✨ El período Marcolini entrando en el neoclasicismo - Esta refinadísima pieza, que está entre el obelisco humano y una pequeña escultura, está realizada como véis, en uno de los materiales más refinados: la porcelana de Meissen. Realizado a finales del siglo XVIII, este tipo de piezas eran un "must" en cualquier casa aristocrática europea. Usados como "sourtut" de table o como decoración de gabinete, normalmente se adquirían en conjuntos de candelabros y otras piezas siguiendo un mismo tema. En este caso encontramos una alegoría de "Hebe", representación de belleza y juventud. Los puttis, los festones (muy intrincados) o las garras neoclásicas conforman un conjunto final que rompe con ciertos estereotipos propios del rococó típico de Meissen. I have a few questions. It's just procedure. Annex Thirty-Two requires as much. So: What is the best kind of chocolate? Is white chocolate a legitimate kind of chocolate? Is ruby chocolate meaningfully distinct from other kinds? Is there such a thing as chocolate which is too dark? And finally: Are hazelnuts in chocolate acceptable?

So! The best chocolates are any that comes from South America, Belgium and Switzerland! I'm a fan of Toblerone and Marcolini. Hershey's is a sin.

Anyway, I wouldnt there's such a thing as too dark of a chocolate, I have a limit with cocoa percentage but it's a acquired taste, like alcohol or coffee!

I cannot say I've had Ruby chocolate so I am neutral!

Finally though, Hazelnuts in Chocolate. By the Angel, I swear it is a beautiful thing. It should be mandatory!
