im doing a retrospective on joan of arc film adaptations

my incomplete impressions so far / i will be revising this

exécution de jeanne d'arc (1898) by georges hatot and jeanne d'arc (1900) by georges méliès might or might not be for completionists but cmon méliès andddd ofc this was gonna be one of the first adaptations in cinema history. firmly believe that every preserved image is a miracle we should look at it

still haven't seen joan the woman (1916) by cecil b. demille / it's demille so im hoping for some cool big moments / i will come back to it

well i cried while rewatching the passion of joan of arc (1928) / cant imagine a world where the original dreyer version of the film got lost forever (it almost was) / aside from the passion i've only watched vampyr... need to see more dreyer asap i heard gertrud is good probably gonna watch it soon / you should light a candle and pray for falconetti that woman's performance is a punch / antonin artaud is in it what do you want me to say / masterpiece

the "katharine hepburn as joan of arc in technicolor screen test" filmed in 1934 / but the film never happened :( / i wonder how katherine would've been in it she fits the joan image really well / it's short and it's on youtube go see it

the german adaptation das mädchen johanna (1935) by the austrian director gustav ucicky / probably the one im seeing next / well things can get very umm ultranationalist w joan so... but im interested

the joan of arc (1948) by victor fleming w the love of my life aka ingrid bergman.. so.. i don't like it.. i mean i love ingrid but i don't think she fits the character / very post ww2 hollywood / some good moments... i get the appeal of the big classical picture but yeah i dont really like this one

the saint joan (1957) by otto preminger w seberg / im gonna have to rewatch real quick cause i saw it like nine years ago when i was obsessed w jean after seeing breathless but i dont remember anything about the film itself so

procès de jeanne d'arc (1962) by robert bresson...................................... oh my............ such a masterpiece. probably my favorite joan of arc adaptation ever / rivette commented on the film on cahiers back in 63 (no 143, may 1963) you should totally check it / the bresson style always strips my soul off its body / "beautiful as a wall — but a wall of signs"

ending with jeanne la pucelle I and II — les batailles and les prisons — (1994) by jacques rivette, of course, born in rouen / divided into two films / i like the division and remember liking the film when i first saw it / but like preminger's version i saw it a long time ago (around the same time i first watched la religieuse) so i didn't know much about rivette back then. i'll watch it again soon.
