ATTENTION MAPLESTORY ENJOYERS: I have a guild on Reboot NA now for questing, lore, character/headcanon/theory discussions, etc.!! It's called QuestStory. There is NO level requirement and doing gpqs (Culvert, Flag Race) is OPTIONAL (though I'll appreciate it if you do one or both of them). There will also be carries for bosses up to Hellux, Akechi, cpap, and nlotus (nlomien once I get Damienroid from hdamien). Please apply if you're interested through the Guild UI, or whisper me when I'm online (ign NovaHeart88, every day +4 (4 hours after reset) or sometimes earlier)!!

i just finished playing Sword and Fairy 7!!! i have things to say and they’re spoilers so i’m gonna put them under a cut
i can’t believe they really turned my boyfriend Xiu Wu back into fruit and then refused to resurrect him because he fell in love with my girlfriend Yue Qingshu 🙄 like i KNOW it’s against the laws of heaven and technically very valid but i feel like they could’ve cut me a break since heaven is so disorganized that they let Aoxu go so far without anyone realizing. also also i get that he sacrificed his life for hers but did that have to mean going back in the tree?
Jiutian Xuannu could have removed his divinity and made him “suffer” to live as a human, or forced him to degenerate into a Heaven Demon (white hair Xiu Wu in all black 😳). now my girl is walking around with a box of fruit she’s in love with lol he better cultivate a new body damn it.
and more than that. do i like. have to restart from the middle of the story in order to complete side quests and stuff? idk why i thought after the story ended it would be open world and i could just run around again but i really really did think that. i wanted to see Bai Moqing and Sang Yo’s wedding! i wanted to hang out in their house and bother Sang Mei! i wanted to collect herbs and make new poisons and go reconcile with er ge and then visit the Mingshu sect and go on adventures.
all these gripes are because the game is so fun, btw. i enjoyed it!! i really liked the story (i’ve seen people say it’s typical xianxia but i’m not super familiar with the genre so it’s new to me!!!!) and the setting and landscapes are beautiful. everything is so pretty and all the npcs are delightful. excellent world building, great weapons, cool outfits, the spell marks looked great. the bosses are a little tanky, but that’s what easy mode is for lmao.

Guild Wars 2, as an MMO, was honestly an extreme game changer when it first came out.
Keep in mind, GW2 came out 11 years ago. While a lot of the things GW2 does now are commonplace among newer MMOs, GW2 was a trailblazer for a lot of it and still manages to hold an identity of its own. Prior to GW2, expecting a high quality MMO with no subscription fee was ludicrous. Sure, you had games like Maplestory or RuneScape, but while popular, they lacked the sort of polish you'd expect from a game like WoW.
11 years ago, most games with gathering basically had pvp gathering, where if you decided to harvest from the same node as someone else, you were effectively stealing resources from them. GW2 said fuck that and made each resource node individualized. This extended even further to other areas of play - someone helping you kill a monster doesn't result in less exp or loot for you, when doing an event everyone is able to get a gold completion as long as they reach a certain level of individual contribution, and even reviving people gave exp. This all contributed to a very friendly air about the game where in other games these actions were often adversarial, in GW2 these actions were all mutually beneficial.
When GW2 first came out, most MMOs had fairly simple combat. You often had to position yourself, but a hit was a hit. Being able to choose where you place your AoE was rare and most skills either required a target or purely existed to provide buffs. Skill shots were rare, and active dodging was unheard of. GW2 looked at combat and said "Okay but what if it was fun?". This was further enhanced by simply eschewing the traditional holy trinity of Tank, Healer, DPS in favor of Control, Support, Damage. There were clear analogs, but with no way of generating enmity and every possible build having some amount of self sustain, what would normally be a tank would focus more on disabling enemies and what would normally be a healer would focus more on general buffs. The GW2 trinity also allowed builds to dip into multiple aspects at once and most builds do a little of each even if they focus on one in particular. This made PvP more engaging as well! sPvP and WvW are both two massive areas of gameplay for GW2 and if it was combat standard for the time the game was released, both would have to function in massively different ways. GW2 remains my favorite game for PvP outside of FPS games.
Freely respeccing your characters was another thing GW2 brought to the table in a big way. FFXIV technically had it first, but given that ARR wouldn't launch until a year after GW2, I'd wager the two games had an equal amount of influence over newer MMOs adopting this sort of freedom in character building. WoW would not introduce free respeccing anywhere you want until 2016.
There is so much more GW2 can be cited for, from the way the world adapts to various events, to simply deciding that there wasn't going to be a gear treadmill and 80 is the max level forever, to the way it just gently guides you through leveling instead of sending you down endless amounts of quests.
Prior to GW2's release, whenever I talked about a new and upcoming MMO I was excited for, I would inevitably hear someone talk about how "Every upcoming MMO gets called the next WoW killer and none of them actually do it". I haven't heard that for about 10 years now.

I don’t want to reblog that long ass post and I barely even read it but it turns out the OP is a sexual predator. One of the comments says that they were banned from a MapleStory guild for sexually harassing female players.
This always happens, almost like clockwork people scream about fictional characters to draw attention away from their own crimes.

just random musings on maplestory (do not play this game)
Extremely long post btw I was rambling
It's just so aggravating how much the entire game changed so quickly.
When the game started, it was a small world. It took a week to reach level 10, and over a month to reach lvl 30 when you got the first job change, even if you were playing every day. This forced people to learn to share maps, thus increasing mob spawn rates. This ALSO necessitated the playing of party quests, a co-op instance where you and 3 other people killed monsters, did platforming, and worked together to beat it and get huge amounts of exp.
The amount of cash shop stuff was very minimal. Little outfits you wore over your armor that did literally nothing, really. They added content slowly, and I think I got to Ludibrium when it got bought out.
Like I had a friend who played more than me (I was in school at the time) and was one of the first people, like a year into the game, to reach level 60. It was rough.
And then they changed the exp curve! Which was great, but it was SUCH a vast change. Instead of taking a month to get to lvl 30, it took like, less than a day. And suddenly there was less demand for map sharing, way less demand for party quests, and as they increased the exp reward for stuff, people just. Ending up grinding solo constantly.
I was the weirdo who did the quests btw. I could barely play in high school so I just did Literally Every Quest lmao.
AND THEN. Then. They added extra stats to your weapons. This was the fucking worst thing. So. They made super bosses have a special kind of Boss Defense, and the only thing capable of piercing that defense was a special extra stat you could get on weapons, known as "Damage to Boss Monsters" that was only available as a "hidden potential" stat. And when you got those hidden stats, it was completely random what you would get.
BUT. If you ~really~ wanted a specific stat on your weapons, you could pay cash for "Cubes" and these would randomize the potentials. But to get the GOOD stats, the ones that would let you fight bosses, you had to buy the Fancy Cubes. And a lot of them. A stack of high quality cubes would cost you like, 50$ for ten of them.
The average cost of a single weapon capable of letting you fight a boss was $300. That's was the Average. Just a long series of gacha-type rerolls trying to actually do a main part of the game.
Good god they made you want to do it though. The best armor in the game was behind these super bosses, and only by getting that armor (which was a fraction of a CHANCE of being the one you needed) could you access a large portion of the game. And these bosses were extremely hard to get to, and many of them spawned like. Once a week. Or once a month. For the entire server.
If you REALLY grinded like constantly, forever, and got lucky by making friends with richer players, you could MAYBE get to be in the arena when they beat the boss. Maybe. If you survived.
And eventually they released the "No Cash" Reboot server, which was. Better. You couldn't trade with anyone or put any equipment in your storage which was stupid as hell, and even with the buffed enemies, you could probably get to the end-game shit Eventually. Though it was incredibly grueling, and relying on RNG to get any good items was. Rough. And they still had cash in the form of pets that could heal you so it was kind of a moot point regardless.
At that point though, all the people from early on in the game's life cycle, who enjoyed like. Playing with others. Had just gotten completely burnt out on the pay-to-win shit and the updates constantly nerfing and buffing classes based on....I'm not sure. Profit margins? Complaints? Who's to say. I tried Reboot for a while but after the third guild I joined that demanded constant leveling I just noped the fuck out of there lmao.
I know people still play this game considering it still gets updates but I hope they're doing okay. I don't want to stress myself out doing the research lmao. Fuck that shit.

Sorry about the lack of posting guys, I just haven't had any more to say about my Cyrus And Cynthia Are N's Parents Theory for a while. I'll be happy to answer any asks about it though! I've been playing a lot of Maplestory lately, besides Pokémas, so I've been really caught up in that. Also I've been working.
About Maplestory, I am currently running a guild on Reboot called Termination! If you play Maplestory and have a level 200+ main on Reboot, feel free to join!
Also since we're here anyway, Will had a complete glow DOWN (right is old sprite, left is his new sprite)?? Like he looked so much more unassuming in Zero's storyline versus Esfera, which makes his transition into the spider monster he is more unsettling in that storyline. Idc if he looks more "conventionally attractive" I EXPECT Esfera Will to be a dick!! I didn't expect Zero Will to be one!! Give him back his old appearance Nexon you cowards!!

A Tribute to the Death Dealers Guild
Thx God 4 them
In the vibrant world of MapleStory, I found not just a game, but a community that became a cherished part of my journey. The Death Dealers were more than just a guild; they were my friends, my mentors, and my clique.
With the help of incredible members like Tiny Joker, Melissa (The one who betrayed Jesus) , Andy, and so many others, I learned the ropes, explored the game's depths, and faced challenges I once thought insurmountable. Their kindness, patience, and camaraderie transformed my gaming experience into something truly special.
Each raid we conquered and every high-level weapon I received was not just a testament to our teamwork, but a reminder of the bonds we formed. I will always be grateful for the laughter, the late-night quests, and the memories we created together.
Thank you, Death Dealers, for making MapleStory my favorite game ever. I will forever cherish the moments we shared and the friendships that blossomed in that magical world.

Starting This Blog
I have something of an appetite for MMORPGs. Runescape and WoW were the two I was hooked on as a kid, specifically the free version of Runescape 2 and a somewhat scrappy Wrath of the Lich King private server. You can tell I couldn't convince my parents to pay subscriptions.
This appetite has spurred me on to trying a decent variety of experiences. I've sampled Rift, Maplestory, and Realm of the Mad God, I've bought Guild Wars 2 and Elder Scrolls Online and reached max level in both, I've been trying Final Fantasy 14 recently, and I have plans to try Warhammer Online. Runescape 3, Oldschool Runescape, and Warframe are probably my most played MMORPGs, and for good reason.
But an important part of this journey is that time when I decided to go back and try some of the older versions of WoW; TBC, Vanilla, and even another shot at WotLK. But while WotLK didn't hold up to my nostalgia and TBC had some real problems, Vanilla blindsided me with a lot of surprisingly great design. Not that Vanilla is perfect or even remotely polished, but it's clear why this game became the gold standard for its genre for such a long time.
What inspired me to make this blog was noticing, among some of the people I talked to, a pervuading dismissive attitude toward the original game's design. And after playing some of the more modern MMORPGs, I feel like they're affected by a similar attitude.
People see design elements that stem from Vanilla WoW, think 'that's poor design, I could do it better', and then it turns out they can't, because they fundamentally refuse to understand what those design elements were actually for. Other MMORPGs have long since surpassed Vanilla's weaknesses, but none have surpassed its strengths.
What strengths? What weaknesses? What design elements? That's what I want to elaborate on in this blog.
Game design is unfathomably complex as both an art and a science, and I resent any dismissive attitudes toward any game's design. That said, I do believe a not-insignificant part of Vanilla WoW's brilliance is by accident, with one particular rumour that one of its most brilliant and innovative decisions was originally a byproduct. These are also things I want to elaborate on later.
Vanilla WoW, despite being a genre touchstone, is something of an odd duck, the oddest duck of its genre. I'm dedicating this blog to examining this fascinating game, and I want to put special focus, not just on the pieces of brilliant design that didn't make it into other games, but the pieces of iffy design that stayed with the genre.
Ultimately, I want another game to do it better, and a richer understanding of MMORPG design and game design in general would help with that.

Yunimori, do you remember drawing a guild portrait for a MapleStory guild back around 2006 called the CrocHunters? 'o'
That sounds...very vaguely familiar, yes. I could not tell you what the art looked like but I DO think I remember doing that? Because I'm fairly certain that was the guild I was in when I played MapleStory back in the day.
