been getting some more challenges done in arkham knight. the nice thing is that there's SO many challenges that you get to spend serious time working on the stars. the downside is like, idk, a lot of the maps start to feel same-y because the characters have a lot of repeated star requirements so its like. you keep doing it the saaame fucking way.
city had less (4 characters, fewer maps), but i feel like city demanded more mastery than knight does. i really knew the maps and the characters by the time i finished city.
same with origins, which had some REALLY challenging maps/stars, but only three characters and you REALLY got to know those 3 characters super well (there's no achievement for finishing slade or bruce, but i still went through and got all of their stars too, as well as batman's).
and asylum is sort of unfair to compare b/c it's a very different game with only one characters and a handful of challenge maps, idk.

I've been playing my EU account a little more often recently and everyone in EU map chat is so much nicer than on NA :) Maybe I will move my main account to EU as well? I saw all of these names waiting for Tequatl on Saturday when it was finally normal people waking hours in Europe so I could do group events for weeklies. 馃槄

one piece is so fucking good at communication. oda's always aware of how information moves around the world, how it can be misinterpreted, deliberately twisted, censored. there aren't that many series where the interplay of fact + the telephone game of its dissemination is depicted so organically beyond a one time use as plot.
the marines rewarding smoker for defeating crocodile is deliberate propaganda, and the WG's decision to hide the mass breakout at impel down to obscure a massive governmental failure. the news that sabo killed cobra was as much gov't lies as interpretation by the third-party news org and that misinterpretation was actively used by the revolutionaries. we're told that the whitebeard pirates instigated the payback war through public channels but find out from marco that blackbeard invaded first and they were acting defensively.
there are underground information channels where information is bought and sold in WCI, the same arc where we learn that katakuri takes such pains to conceal his meriendas from his siblings who believe him to be perfect, the same arc where we learn that brulee knew all along. not everyone has the same information and the information that's spread isn't always true, nor is it always false.
and then you have god valley, lulusia and ohara straight up wiped off the maps and their existence & histories erased. you need an immense amount of power to do that, which we understand the WG to have. wano that's isolationist and thus cut off from information passing in AND out of it. roger's final words which too many people heard, the WG couldn't have hidden that or stopped the great age of pirates even if they'd tried. televising the death of whitebeard and ace to demoralize pirates and put the age to an end, then whitebeard's announcement that the one piece is real which only spurred it on harder. there are too many other examples to list
ig ultimately it's not surprising that one piece puts such emphasis on the transfer of knowledge & information considering the mystery at the foundation of the series, but it's refreshing to see it in a piece of media and to see so many levels of it, to see different characters with different kinds of access to it. it's a constant, ongoing theme that's touched on from all different angles at all levels of the world from the personal to the global.
part of oda's mastery of character is just this constant awareness of Who Knows What and how that will affect their interactions with each other. nami's secret that wasn't a secret at all, usopp's final lie to his village, the chefs at baratie trying to drive sanji away so he can follow his dreams... yet misunderstandings because of bad communication are rare, and when a fight does happen because of stubbornness and pride getting in the way, it's not a funky plot driver but a hurtful, friendship-ending blowout.
i don't dislike miscommunication in fiction, but the way it's done is almost always... bad? i don't want to see adults with the emotional maturity of 12 year olds fighting over middle school level beef, if I'm not seeing the careful interplay of differential access to information & character personalities causing realistic and understandable breaks in communication, what's the point!!

Except everything is going to be easy for people who have mastered it. Like, yeah, you wouldn't think that your perspective on a game's difficulty is unreasonable. You are a logical, thoughtful person, and you put thought and effort into forming your opinions. That doesn't make them correct or useful for anyone but yourself.
Total War: Warhammer 3 is NOT very easy or exploitable, nor is the mid to late game "way too easy". It is a very difficult game the entire way through and people struggle with it. I have seen it, I still experience it, the idea that it can ever be called an easy game is strictly wrong. You may have an easy time with it, but that is a very different statement, you have to understand that. Lifting 200 pounds isn't easy just because you can do it.
Like, this was a post about how a perspective can totally miss the reality of the thing they are looking at because they have mastered it. I know perspectives can come to different conclusions, and nobody is suggesting new players are the ultimate arbiters of difficulty. The thing is, if you're going to sit there and say thing like, helldivers 2 on helldive difficulty is "way too easy" then you cannot be taken seriously in any kind of actual discussion of the game. Relate your experience, sure, express yourself, but that doesn't make it an opinion worth hearing out about the fundamental nature of what you are talking about.
I genuinely think, that once you are good enough at something, especially a game, your opinion on its difficulty doesn't matter. I am no exception to this, though in at least a few things i think it is mitigated for various reasons, but ultimately it doesn't matter.
Why?
Because once you've gotten mastery of a system, your perspective is that of someone with system mastery, and so the many moving parts of the system disappear and you only see the whole, only see the parts that you have mastered. I see this all the time. My favourite is discussion of total war warhammer 3, where people with thousands of hours in the total war franchise call it easy because they have figured out all the optimal strategies and perfect little abuses of the systems that trivializes the difficulty and then call the game too easy because it doesn't have a perfect simulation that can match them. the total war series is, by any objective metric, incredibly difficult. Warhammer 3 is very difficult.
They'll outright lie about what happens in the game too, which is another pet peeve, but that's a whole different thing.
Anyways, before you weigh in on the difficulty of something, I think you should ask yourself: "Do I have system mastery? Is my perspective on this reasonable?"
Then do whatever you want. I'm not your mom.

regency au jing yuan how you are haunting me.
(continued here!)
a retired general who at the ripe age of thirty five has never taken a wife. never showed any interest in procuring a spouse nor does he entertain any attempts by the mamas of the ton to throw their eligible children at him. he is a polite scoundrel, kind-hearted in a way that makes those with half a mind question how someone with his demeanor could ever be the famed general who's strategies downed Shuhu during the Abundance Upheaval. he doesn't seem to care for his legacy, as much as he has cultivated one. he doesn't mind gossip, but doesn't entertain it much either.
you only meet him due to fortunate circumstances.
Tumblr media
lord Luocha, a successful travelling merchant, pledged patronage to you sometime ago. he keeps you in a little cottage on the grounds of his manor where you're allowed to mostly do as you please as long as there's a new painting hung on the lord's wall every few months or so. the lord likes when you play too. he brings back new instruments for you to try, though he never expects mastery. he has an air of mystery to him that, despite all of the time you spend near him, keeps you from understanding him fully. you aren't one to pry about it either.
lord luocha invites jing yuan over to partake in fancy spirits from a country and city you can't ever hope to visit, let alone find on a map. you bring lord luocha your newest work-- (a meticulously completed oil painting. something more abstract, suited to the odd lonely and isolation you feel in your little, cozy cottage, despite all of the comforts you are afforded)-- and happen upon the pair.
lord luocha examines your newest work with pride, and shortly after introduces you. 'his patron' he calls you, but offers jing yuan no title. you--
(do not have one. it was stripped from you a long time ago. you think being an artist suits you better, anyways.)
jing yuan offers you his name, though you already know it. you recognize him based on the prattling of the girls and boys at the market. they swoon over his stature, fawn over his good deeds, and make note of his identifiable red hair ribbon. he has the same soft, sun-colored eyes that you had heard the eligible young of the ton giggle about.
you bow to him politely.
you have no reason to linger, but luocha calls you to anyways. perhaps he is lonely. perhaps you want him to be lonely, so it gives you a reason to stick closer to his side in the rare moments he is home for more than a day or two. the proximity is shared with jing yuan, who regards you with keen eyes and a lazy smile. the attention upon you feels weighted, important, like you're something special.
you savor it, however fleeting.
perhaps, however, you misunderstood jing yuan. or lord luocha's intentions.
because as jing yuan rises to take his leave and you bow once more, he catches your hand, brings it to his lips, and presses a kiss into the soft skin. you're sure you smell of linseed and yarrow oil. he lingers there for a moment before meeting your gaze. there's a light of mischief in them that sends your heart fluttering. your breath catches.
when jing yuan is out of the manor, lord luocha pats your shoulder gently, "quite the man, isn't he?"
"i suppose... he is."
"you may speak freely."
"i am," you mince, and shake your head. you must be careful, entertaining such fanciful thoughts. "he is... kind."
"and handsome."
"lord luocha," you barely keep yourself from whining. "please, do not tease me. or the poor man. from what i hear, he has enough to deal with."
"the mamas do chase after him like foxes to a hen," lord luocha chuckles and studies your painting once more with a curious tilt of his head. "he'll ask to see you again, i'm certain."
"and why do you say that?"
"general jing yuan has never taken the hand of a potential suitor."
your heart feels heavy and warm in your chest, burning. "my lord, you cannot possibly think that this single action indicates that the general will... call upon me? that is highly unorthodox and i don't believe that's... quite allowed."
"jing yuan has never cared for the dances of decorum." lord luocha guides you into your gardens. the peonies are in bloom, full and lush in the humidity of late spring. "and, for the record, i don't believe he'll simply call upon you. court, properly, certainly."
"you're bluffing."
"what reason do i have to lie?"
"to tease me, as you so enjoy doing," you huff.
lord luocha simply hums and pauses near a bush of lilacs. they're fragrant, at the peak of their season. the scent rolls over you.
"if i truly intended to tease you, i simply would abstain from telling you of jing yuan's interest and allow you to be terribly surprised when he arrives and formally asks for you and your time. consider this a warning. i'll walk you to the modiste tomorrow, hm?"
you want to squawk at him. your linen dresses and tunics are fine (albeit smeared and stained with paints and oils over the years. you rarely bother replacing them.)
you want to protest and pry more, but lord luocha strikes you silent when he breaks off a cluster of lilac and tucks it behind your ear. he leaves you with your thoughts, however tortuous. and, perhaps horribly, you find yourself believing him. perhaps the warm-eyed general really was charmed. perhaps, your dresses needed replacing and you should contact your perfumer friend for a fresh vial or two.
perhaps perhaps perhaps, you can still feel where his lips lingered on your skin, like a brand. you never thought you could ache for burning, but in the gardens, you find yourself clutching your hand to your chest, craving the lick of the his sun's heat once more.
