This has been on my list for years, but I just kept putting it off, hoping that it'd air with closed captions on Sky Stage one day. But thanks to Lina and Kana's help with getting the script, it's now done!

This is timed to the Sky Stage DVD day recording (not the raku!). If you have the DVD, you might need to shift the timing to match your copy. (And maybe use the .srt version instead if the font size/formatting is off, since the .ass version is formatted for the HD recording.)

Ennoshita isn’t here today.

Kenji sighs and stares, despondent, at the empty armchair where Ennoshita usually sits when he visits. It’s been a few days since he last stopped by, and the withdrawal is starting to take its toll. 

“You know,” says Mai, “you wouldn’t have to sit and wait for him to come around if you had just asked for his number.”

Kenji whips around to scowl at her. “Like you have room to talk. Didn’t you say you were going to ask out Misaki on Tuesday?”

Mai flushes red. “It was bad timing! I wasn’t going to ask her in the middle of the rush hour.”

“She was literally the only one in the shop.”

“Yes, but she was in a rush,” says Mai haughtily. “Hence, it was a rush hour for her.”

Kenji rolls his eyes. “Whatever makes you feel better.”

“I heard the film department had a pretty big project to finish up this week,” Aihara Mao chimes in. “That’s probably why he hasn’t been here. Cheer up, Kenji, I’m sure he’ll be back soon enough.”

“You make me sound obsessed with him,” Kenji grumbles, burying his face in his arms. Honestly, he knows he kind of is. Not obsessed, no, that’s creepy. He’s just . . . incredibly conscious of Ennoshita’s presence and the lack thereof. Observant. Attentive. Vigilant.

Addicted, Jiri had called him once.

“Kogane-kun told me he couldn’t stop staring at you the last time he was here,” Mai says. “You can’t tell me that doesn’t mean something.” 

“Maybe I was having a bad hair day.”

Mai throws up her hands and looks at Mao, her exasperation as clear as the summer sun. “Forget it, he’s hopeless.”

“Hopelessly in loooooove,” Mao sings, and dodges when Kenji chucks a crumpled straw wrapper at her, laughing. “It’s cute, Kenji! It’s nice to know that you’re not all bitter black coffee.”

“I am not!” Kenji protests. “Shirabu is bitter black coffee. I’m a mocha frappuccino with extra chocolate chips, whipped cream, and a caramel drizzle on top.”

“Ennoshita doesn’t like frappuccinos,” points out Mai, unhelpfully. “He always orders a peach green tea when he’s here.”

Like Kenji doesn’t know that. Like he doesn’t know that Ennoshita takes his green tea with less ice and at half the sweetness. Like he doesn’t pay attention when Ennoshita tells him every miniscule detail about his life, from the asshole professor he has on Tuesdays to the stray rabbit his younger cousins adopted. Like Kenji hasn’t catalogued every single moment they’ve ever had together, carefully preserved behind glass cases in his head like a fucking museum of shameless, relentless crushing. 

Okay, so he’s a little bit hopeless. Not that he would ever tell Mai that.

↪︎ When you first starting dating Mao, you made it abundantly clear that you couldn’t do one thing: you couldn’t bake, or cook, or anything related to mixing food together over a hot stove. 

↪︎ You continually stressed the fact that anyone who ate your food would probably have to be rushed to the hospital with food poisoning. 

↪︎ She laughed at how worked up you had gotten and since then you’d been confined to plating the food she made or you guys ordered.

↪︎ She didn’t mind though.  When you guys didn’t feel like ordering in she enjoyed cooking-- and catching you staring at her.

↪︎ But this time, you wanted to something special for her.

↪︎ Mao had a big volleyball tournament coming up and teams from all over the prefecture would be competing.

↪︎ And you wanted to hand-make something for her because you knew that she would appreciate that more than something store bought.

↪︎ So that’s how you found yourself in the kitchen, subjecting a box three boxes of brownie mix to your scrutiny.

↪︎ You didn’t expect it to turn out well, but you knew that Mao would appreciate your attempt.

↪︎ Sometimes, you honestly found it disappointing how incapable you were of throwing five things into a bowl and not exploding the kitchen.

↪︎ It was the weekend and Mao had extra practices in order to prepare for the tournament .

↪︎ And since Mao often stopped by your place after weekend practices, you only had a few hours to complete your mission.

↪︎ Twenty minutes later, an impending feeling of doom loomed over you.  As you looked around the kitchen, you knew you would have a lot of cleaning to do.

↪︎ You sighed, throwing the incredible number of dishes- most of which were probably not necessary- into the sink, leaning of the island.

↪︎ Not even ten seconds into your moment to relax, you were up on your feet again.

↪︎ Dread washed over you as you smelt a scent that you were a little too familiar with. 

↪︎ Shoot, you waved an oven mitt across your face as smoke poured out of the oven along with the smell of burnt chocolate. 

↪︎ It took you at least fifteen minutes to rid your kitchen of the potent smell.

↪︎ Strike one, onto round two.

↪︎ On your second attempt, you had mad sure to double check you included every ingredient in your mix before setting the timer and possibly over checking the brownies while they were in the oven.

↪︎ You breathed out a breath of relief when the timer went off.

↪︎ The oven door opened to reveal perfectly cooked brownies, not burnt.

↪︎ Once they cooled you grabbed a knife and a spatula.

↪︎ But, as soon as you made the first cut, you knew your luck wasn’t that good.

↪︎ It was stuck, in the pan.

↪︎ No matter how much you wiggled your spatula, it seemed like it wasn’t making any progress.

↪︎ And when you finally managed to detach a brownie square from the pan, it was mangled and deformed.

↪︎ Nearly half an hour of your life went down the drain, scraping the chocolate treat from the bottom of the pan.

↪︎ Strike two, third time’s a charm right? 

↪︎ This time, you made sure to leave nothing to chance.

↪︎ You took extra care to make sure no ingredient was left out, you sprayed the pan with a little too much cooking spray, and you set a timer that you couldn’t miss. 

↪︎ Finally, when you had a moment that wasn’t filled with flour, ovens, or dish washing you all but crumpled onto the kitchen island. 

↪︎ But as the world had shown you so far, peace never lasts. 

↪︎ The creaking of the front door opening seemed to alert an alarm in your mind.  

↪︎ You glanced at the clock and cursed yourself for loosing track of time. 

↪︎ As Mao started to walk through the door you pushed her back out, causing her to stumble. 

↪︎ “Y/N?  Are you hiding something from me?”  You realised that she was probably getting the wrong idea from your actions and started to panic 

↪︎ What do I say?  I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but I don’t want her to get the wrong idea. 

↪︎ “I have a surprise for you, just hold your breath and close your eyes.” 

↪︎ You couldn’t risk her identifying the treat by its smell. 

↪︎ “Ok?”  She looked skeptical, but she did what you asked anyways 

↪︎ Ten minutes later, while she was laying on your bed, scrolling through her phone she heard a loud crash come from the kitchen followed by you yelling.  “Fudging, fudge, fudge!”

↪︎ “What?” 

↪︎ Until she saw the glorified mess laid out in front of her. 

↪︎ “No! Y ou weren’t meant to see this, it was supposed to be a surprise!”

But still no Ennoshita. This is the worst day of his life.

Asamushi orders from Mai, looks at Kenji moping, and frowns. “What’s up with him?”

“Lovesick,” Mao says brightly. “You know how it is, Asamushi. You were in a pretty sorry state yourself.”

Asamushi scowls. Ever since he and Jiri got together, the entire coffee shop has taken to teasing him whenever he comes in. Serves him right, Kenji thinks darkly, for putting poor Jiri’s heart through the wringer like that.

“He’ll cheer up once we get Ennoshita back,” Mai says. “Don’t worry about him, Asamushi, he’s just being overdramatic.”

But Asamushi, that bastard, would never let a chance to torment Kenji escape him.

“If you need help confessing, I could give you a few pointers,” he says. “Since, you know, I am the one with a boyfriend and all.”

Kenji frowns. “You left anonymous YELP reviews complimenting Jiri like a creepy stalker because you were too chicken to have a normal conversation with him that didn’t include insulting his face every five seconds.”

Asamushi flushes pink, but he manages to keep a straight face. “And it worked, you ass bastard. Guess who’s going to have some banger sex later today?”

“I can’t believe you just said that,” says Mai. “I can’t believe Jiri is dating you.”

“Can I just get my drinks, please? I’m going to be late for our date.”

“Here you go.” Kenji slides the cups across the counter. “Tell Jiri we say hi. But not while you have his dick in your mouth. I wouldn't want to kill the mood for you guys.”

This time, Asamushi’s face turns an outrageous shade of red. “Don’t you ever shut the fuck up?”

“I’d say you’ll have to make me, but I get the feeling you and Jiri do that plenty enough to each other already."

Me? Posting Haikyuu fanart? In 2020? Again after months??? I myself don't see that coming oho hoo.⁠ -⁠ Okay, jokes aside, I usually just browsing stuff around but now I had quite some motivation to upload some stuff here.⁠ -⁠ So here's my rarepair, Azumane Asahi and Aihara Mao. I really don't know how to explain why I like them when I first see them until today but what I can tell is my head sometimes playing made-up scenes where they're actually classmates but they're never really talk as Asahi pretty shy and Mao very active with her practice.⁠ -⁠ Once the match where both boys and girls team participated in the tournament ended during the first season I think, I like to imagine that they both start to talk outside club time.⁠ -⁠ I just love that they both have quite some similarities here and there like their similar age, same school, same club and even volleyball position as Ace. Maybe they could have some talk on how is the feel of being ace and having some playful practice with him at park or beach. That would be fun.⁠ -⁠ I personally not sure which ship name to use but I choose AsaMao for simplicity.⁠
