REVIEW | "Show-ha Shoten!" - Volume Seven | B3crew.com

Akinari Asakura isn’t just great with comedy; he also knows how to tell one hell of a story. This should already be known by now for those who read Show-ha Shoten!, which is drawn by Death Note artist Takeshi Obata. However, this tale of manzai comedy isn’t just focused on the laughs these comedians bring to the stage. As Volume Seven shows, it’s also about the teardrops that pave their road to stardom.

Once again, One Way Ticket to the Top doesn’t take up much of this volume’s spotlight. After Broken Glass Slipper wows the judges, the next three duos go up and try to win the Wara-1 Koshien finals. Kamikaze Yellowtail, whose bit is about the love of swimming, gets some laughs from the crowd, but not as big as Broken Glass Slipper. Their score ranks lower, meaning they’ve been completely eliminated from the competition.

on the topic of kai and parallels... there's a lot to be said about his similarities to and differences from midori, namely how despite their similar upbringings their personalities are in radical opposition as a result of midori's lack of kindness and kai's abundance of it, but aside from that there's something weirdly similar about their humour. they share a fairly unique style of fucking around with people, making strange off-beat jokes and then playing dumb about it to throw off and exasperate the other person. it's the surrounding context that makes kai's sense of humour cute and midori's sense of humour sinister, but it's striking how similar the rhythm of some of their gags is

Comedy is genderless, so why is it that women have the hardest time making it big? Sure, there are your Ali Wongs and Sarah Silvermans, but the ratio of successful male comedians and female comedians teeters hard to the male side. (In fact, as of this writing, Japan's prestigious M-1 Grand Prix manzai competition has yet to have a female winner!) Perhaps if the comedy world wasn’t always telling women comedians that it’ll be harder to succeed than men, then maybe the powers that be wouldn’t already plan to push them down the hole of failure. This is what Broken Glass Slipper has dealt with their entire careers, but in the sixth volume of Show-ha Shoten!, the duo pushes right back!

The Wara-1 Koshien competition is just about to start in Osaka, the comedy capital of Japan! Ten manzai teams, only one winner. This means the odds are stacked against One-Way Ticket to the Top, as Azemichi and Taiyo have yet to figure out how to defeat the other nine acts. They have a plan, but whether or not it’s a good one will be decided upon by the judges and the audience. On top of that, there’s one team that’s itching to make things horrible for Taiyo: Brutus.

straight man/funny man (manzai) is more popular in japan than it is in the west so you might've missed the deeper context behind this stupid fucking bit that oliver and drippy do that makes me smile every time. manzai is essentially a double act comedy performance with straight man/funny man roles - smiley and surly perform manzai. the bit i'm talking about is where drippy asks oliver if he minds having a sidekick and gets offended when oliver asks who, and then at the end of the game tells oliver "you made one heck of a sidekick, ollie-boy!"

and honestly i'm not even sure if it's intentional or if it's a localisation only thing; in japanese drippy uses the word "partner" (パートナー; romanised pātonā) instead of "boke" when referring to oliver which kind of makes this whole thing crumble apart (unless there's some comedy thing related to パートナー in japanese that i'm unaware of...)

however they DO translate boke (funny man) as "sidekick" in the localisation (which is slightly strange because they DO translate tsukkomi as "straight man"...), as well as drippy's "partner" being translated to sidekick at both the start and end of the game. which paints an insanely funny picture of drippy offering to be the funny man to oliver's straight man at the start of the game only for oliver to go "what. what are you talking about" and drippy going ...................okay this kid has no idea what he's talking about clearly he is the funny man in this scenario and i will refer to him as such
