My final post-op appointment was on the 11th! The nurse took off the steri-strips covering over the incisions, and cut off any remaining sutures that hadn't ended up dissolving like they were supposed to, and said everything appears to be healing nicely.

I'll take her word for it; though I have been and still am kinda worried about how, to me, my nipples look like they're spaced unevenly. Like, too far apart. Everyone I've talked to about it so far though says, you're still healing, the swelling still hasn't gone down, give it time. So I'm trying not to stress too hard.

While there, I went to bring forms to the front desk. You know, the ones they told me to fill out that I had already filled out. (I didn't fill them out again, I just brought the original ones from home.)

The woman at the front desk, the very sweet one who helped me the first time I actually filled everything out, said she would take care of it and when I came out of my appointment, to come by and she would give me my paperwork back.

So I get out of my appointment and walk up to the desk. She tells me that she did some research - and apparently I was already approved for medical leave.

This was very confusing for me, since I never got any sort of notification: no email, no letter, no phone call. The only letter I got was for when I got denied.

We discussed it for a short time, but only really could come up with "maybe things got lost in the mail". She couldn't tell me where or who exactly allegedly approved it either. When I got home, I eventually called into SAW to ask about it.

According to the lady on the phone - I have never had medical leave approved. Only denied.

So yeah I have no fucking clue what is going on anymore and I'm so over it, lol. I'm trying not to bother thinking about it anymore. Later in the day, my store manager texted to ask if I could come back by the 3rd of September. I considered it, but since outside of having money again I would gladly stay away for months upon months, I decided to stick with the date my own surgeon originally gave me (that I sent to him and the HR team actually) and say it'd be best to wait til September 9th. So that's what I'm doing.

Other than that... yeah. Same old, same old. Just playing video games, reading, trying to get back into writing and trying to learn guitar and trying to learn to draw.

There has been trouble in my family. One of my grandmothers passed away suddenly and shortly after that, someone else in my immediate family had a near death experience that I'd rather not talk about as it's not my place. I only just found out about the second; I learnt about the first a few days ago after it happened.

My mind is... mush. There is a lot going on mentally and I'm not sure how all to handle it. So of course I'll handle it the way I've been handling my beloved cat dying, and how I've been handling my crippling fear of the future, and how I've been handling my general pining for past relationships that have changed drastically.

That is to say, refusing to think about any of it and throwing myself into multiple forms of media at once (i.e., a game going on my laptop and one on my phone, a book open on the desk next to me, music playing in the background, and notebooks scattered around) and never letting up until I'm no longer able to stay awake, thus being taken by the release of sleep. I am well aware that I'm doing myself a disservice and only delaying the inevitable, and that it will be all the worse for me when the foundation caves in but... I can't really help it. It's all I know how to do.

Anyway, sorry, that was a bit of a depressing note and nothing really related to my surgery, which is why this blog exists, and none of yall need to be burdened with my mental BS, so - sorry about that.

On a positive note to try and bring this back; so far, it's been really, really nice to be able to wear tank tops and not be super uncomfortable anymore. I'm still semi uncomfortable because of how large my stomach is but it is very nice to finally have a flat chest and not have to worry about that part of things anymore. I'm excited to hopefully lose weight and then be able to fit into all the old shirts and jackets I've missed so much.

And... yup, that's about all I got, surgery-wise. see ya.

I feel like I make one of these posts every other month and I don’t know how else to explain why reposting is such a shitty thing to do to graphic makers, so I’m going to try this fic analogy that @bartbarthelme once told me was helpful for her in explaining to someone else why it was a shitty thing to do. I am paraphrasing, so I’m sure however Bart did it was much classier:

Imagine you write a fic.

You put a ton of time and effort into it. You tweak it, you work out all the kinks. You make sure everything is exactly as it should be. You log into your AO3 and you post it up for people to read.

Then someone comes along and decides they like it, but instead of sharing a rec link, they copy your entire fic. They paste it into their own account and they re-publish it under their own username. They don’t credit you - not that that would make it any better. They don’t say anything about where the story came from, they just post it up and let it live as if it were their own work. They even interact with the comments. And then, that stolen copy of your work becomes the one people start sharing and reccing, even though your original is still sitting there.

How upset would you be, as the creator of that story? Or on behalf of the creator of that story?

Probably more than a little? Probably a lot?

What bothers me the most about the fic analogy, is that the very thought of that specific situation is infuriating to pretty much anyone and everyone. At the very idea of reposting someone’s written fan work, there would be (and often is!) a fandom uprising in support of the person or group it’s happened to. This is nearly never true for people who do fan artworks and graphics. In fact, there is often pushback from people when we ask them not to re-post our work. Not many people would think twice about saving something and reposting it to their own account without bothering to ask if it’s okay, or knowing where it came from. It’s an issue here, and an even bigger one with Instagram fan accounts. 

While I really do appreciate the kind comments I get from you guys about all the gifs and edit making, it often winds up being a hugely frustrating effort when it’s also met with endless reposting of them daily, and having someone either ping me with another FYI this looks like yours, or seeing it on my dash from someone else I follow having reblogged a reposter. I can’t even tell you how quickly that stage door laughing gif was reposted the other night, despite my saying in the post it went up with, really clearly, please don’t.

The other night, someone sent me a link to a post where someone took a gif-set I shared a few days ago, cropped pieces of them out and reposted them in their own set 3 hours later. If you guys knew the amount of time it takes me to edit that kind of thing, just for someone else come along, make some quick crops on it and throw it up like nothing? I was so frustrated, I trashed the one I was in the middle of working on because what’s the fucking point? And sure, sometimes a reposter is reasonable and will take the content down, but the nature of this stuff is that dozens to hundreds of people could have (and usually will have) reblogged, and depending on the platform, re-reposted the work by the time they remove the original offense. So the damage is done and will just continue to grow.

I’m sure some of the responds to this will be along the lines of ‘well if you don’t want that to happen, then don’t post it online’ and hey - good point. I don’t disagree with it. Honestly, I have a dumb amount of stage door/QA/etc video and photo stuff that I have never posted, simply because I know it’s going to wind up going this route, and if I don’t create the issue for myself, then I have nothing to complain about. 

But outside of that, just in terms of general fanworks - I find it continually frustrating that with graphic-making and visual fanworks, fans have never seen a definable boundary there in the same way they do with fic - ie: someone else created this, and I should not take it and share it as if it were my own.

Living Online

Online language deconstructs certain social expectations of formality in our use of ‘grammatically correct’ English. The words and phrases used on social networking platforms, or just on devices in general, embody the casualness of grammar which has been developing over the past century in correlation with the inventions of the technological boom. Nowadays, owning a mobile phone is merely an expectation due to the generational progression of constant communication and the pressures of updating content on applications throughout the day. The normality of posting a story of every meal you get served in a restaurant or every time you head to the gym, engages the assumption of a forward facing generation who expect an applaud for leading a very normal life. In reality, the ever expanding media richness of the internet has lead to many of us wanting to live and document our lives online.

Imagine taking a spontaneous trip to London to have dinner up The Shard, would be lovely wouldn’t it? BUT, did it really happen if you didn’t post a photo to your Instagram story or upload your feed with a photo of the view underneath the tagged location? Every occasion in this generation of serial swipers and double tappers require Snapchats, Instagram and Facebook check-ins in order for the day to have been fully experienced.

Our phones are gradually becoming an extra limb, an attachment to our hands that erupts panic through our bodies if it’s not arms reach away at all times. The cost of this specific human mutation, has caused a nation to suffer through the declination of face to face contact. It is no secret that England is the 8th laziest country in the world, with 63.3% of the nation completely inactive, but our reliance on our phones are slowly progressing much more than the novelty of a phone call or a quick text. We now abuse the inventions of applications to build and maintain the foundations of many of our real life relationships that are otherwise abandoned in face to face situations. With apps abilities ranging from tagging people in funny videos on Facebook to making quick cash by selling clothes on Depop, to now actually sourcing romantic relationships on platforms like Tinder, there really is something for everyone.

As we build our profiles on apps accessible to us by all devices we, as users, are granted the ability to engage with Computer Mediated Communications (CMC). In accessing CMC, the opportunities to interact with long distance family or form relationships with online friends, enhance the attraction towards online interactions over face to face interactions due to its easiness in the little effort it requires. Social networking platforms provide us with the protection of certain situations which, in real life, would cause hesitation or conflict if gone about in the wrong way. Through being on Facebook or Instagram etc, allows us to portray the best version of ourselves by exercising the ability to control and manipulate any personal information and content visual to others and with much little transaction costs. Online profiles only gage the persona we aspire to liken ourselves to, in other words, it’s our most favourite version of ourselves we wish to ascertain - all the time.

Our online language, believe it or not, is one of the most powerful tools of expression in creating our online footprint. Instagram’s and profile picture updates might not gage that much of our personality due to the absence of textuality attached to the post. However, on applications with the main feature being communication, our online language starts to form its own natural quirk. It would be easy to explain that all the emotions and feelings inside our heads, that are often the main reason we feel so desperate to share something to our social media pages, are filtered and controlled by little people in our brains which makes our actions pre-justified and reasonable. But unfortunately, this is not the case.

If you’ve never seen the Walt Disney movie ‘Inside Out’ I would highly recommend it in order to explore a simplified representation of impulse reactions. The film features 5 personifications representing Riley's (an 11 year old girl) basic emotions; Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. They all function in her headquarters with the emotions influencing her choices and reactions to life events throughout her growing up period. The emotions use a control console which allows them to influence Riley accordingly, depending on the morality of the situation and potential consequences. This concept of human incapability of controlling their own actions is an enlightening approach to the modernised world of online communication. 

The idea of internal characters influencing one persons reactions, can be reflected in the concept of social interaction whereby a lot of us will use social media to gage opinions from others. Generally, if we are faced with challenging online conversations, it is likely that the process of screenshotting and forwarding will occur. It is no secret that nowadays, our camera rolls contain mostly past conversations or arguments sent to friends to seek help or advice in how best to respond to a problematic message. And, even though, generally, it’s always the same two people most active in the group chat who are most likely to give you the synchronous response of feedback and moral support you so desired, the few onlookers - more suitably referable as ‘the overhearers’ that barely speak - gain all the drama without having to put any effort in. You know the ones, sitting on the group chat and watching all the messages roll in whilst also pretending to have lost the ability to reply!!! The fact that people now prefer to not only communicate online, but now also to turn to others to reply to messages meant for only the receiver, prevails online interaction as a manipulation of reality. Because messages, despite being sent to one person, no longer embody instant messaging but are now asynchronous chats due to their drafting, editing and altering by many, many more people. Also, who’s to determine the tone of a message anyway? Due to the inconclusive interpretation of the true intentions of a message, we are left alone to determine how to provide our response.

Replying to messages can be a lengthy process. We determine suitable replies independently in order to maintain relationships with people through instant messaging. But what is suitable? Anything that we choose to reply with can manipulate and change the course of conversation instantaneously if wrongly perceived. The concept of Black Mirrors interactive Netflix movie ‘Bandersnatch’ emphasises the influence a viewer can have on the movie plot through the repercussions of wrong choices. Once the chosen option is made by the viewer, with the consequences of that choice having been played out, they are given another chance to either re-do or continue with the decision previously made. Providing the movie has 3 potential ‘main’ endings, the journey in picking the right options, whether this be between Frosties or Honey Puffs, gives very different outcomes in the films conclusion. In relation to the risky business of messaging, it  could be considered useful to be able to interactively decide and change the outcome of a message once the reply is anticipated and sent. The idea that you could choose between several responses which lead to various different outcomes, but then re-do the responses if the outcome doesn’t suit your desired intentions, would change the whole game of sending a risky text. It would be like a preview of the future. 

Bandersnatch (2018):

Messages and their meanings are reliant on the way they are interpreted by the receiver. Due to textual language lacking socioemotional expressions (thank god for voice notes) it is purely down to the receiver in how they then choose to reply. Whether the message be sympathetic or sarcastic, the outcome can be catastrophic if read incorrectly, hence the importance of face to face conversations. Hyper personal receivers are more likely interpret messages sent to them most suitable to their situations or assumptively depending on how well they know the sender. It is easy for someone to read a text in a manner that is appropriate to the purpose of the conversation at hand. Boyfriend annoying you? Great, reply with a sarcastic remark, it’s the easiest format of achieving that extra attention you wanted in the first place. The power of the receiver outweighs the purpose of the original message. Why? Because you determine the outcome based on how it’s read. 

Online, we are able to create any persona we desire. It is no secret that people online are more boisterous and confident when expressing their feelings whether this be through a Facebook status, YouTube video or even a message to a group chat. Behind a screen, people evoke the persona of a keyboard warrior. It is easier for someone online to voice a derogatory or controversial opinion about someone or something without having to consider the repercussions if that person is upset by it. The dangers of online language entails the toxicity of being able to hide behind a screen and not having to deal with real people at face to face value. You don’t have to deal with emotions or anything else relating the a real humans actual feelings due to the overall absence of personal richness.

Hyper personal communications are more desirable, nowadays, online. Fact. Whether this be due to the decline in social skills and the fact that we have grown up in world where it’s more acceptable to add the new girl in our class on Facebook rather than to introduce ourselves in person, or whether it’s caused by the increase in our online groups to construct choices we should be strong enough to make on our own. The truth is, face to face communication is a dying cause and it’s only a matter of time before we lose the art of conversation due to the time and effort we put into perfecting our online personas rather than our real ones.

I Tried Living Like a Social Media Influencer for a Week - Here’s What I Learned:

In a world full of Instagram and Youtube, a new elitism was born: Social Media Influencers.

What are social media influencers? According to the Digital Marketing Institue, social media influencers are, “users who have established credibility in a specific industry, have access to a huge audience and can persuade others to act based on their recommendations.”

After the death of app Vine, the top users couldn’t fathom losing their daily 6 seconds of fame and get a real job, so instead, they turned to good ol’Youtube. Youtube, which was once a platform for content creators to post actual formatted-scripted-creative videos, then became a playground for inFlueNcErs to post shallow videos of themselves vlogging their day-to-day life of doing $1,000 shopping hauls and Taco Bell mukbangs.

Though these vloggers claim their content is actual ~hard~ work, from a viewers standpoint it just looks like an extreme form of the narcissism of privileged people showing off how much money they have and how much fun they can have without having to maintain a real job.

In addition to their hard work of filming themselves eating fast food, there’s also the extremely hard and tiring work of them posting pictures of themselves onto Instagram. While I personally do not understand how this is real work, other sources would argue that it is. A recent survey showed that 75% of generation z and millennials consider online content creation to be a real job, and 34% of those people want to start a YouTube channel themselves. 

Still, I can’t help but be irked when hearing about this lifestyle. But why? To figure out where this rooted irritation stems from, I decided to try to live like a social media influencer for a week. Vlogging. Instagramming. Eating like them and dressing like them. For a full week. Yeah. yeah. Here is what I learned:

1.) It Takes A lot of Confidence:

Is it confidence or is it narcissism? Depends on the vlogger. Either way, you’ll need one of the two to get started in the influencer world.

Let’s start off with vlogging. Talking to a camera while walking in a public space with people staring at you…..not an easy feeling. Every time I started filming and a person would notice, I instantly felt self-conscience.

 Even when I was attempting to film alone, as soon as I would start talking to the camera as if it was an actual person, I couldn’t help but to laugh. Every. Time. 

Maybe I should give more credit to vloggers who talk to their camera in public and make it look so easy and natural because it’s not. 

Going along with the self embarrassment, posting consistently on Instagram added to the feeling. 

I normally post on my Instagram one or two times a month, but posting pictures of myself WEEKLY felt like I hit the beyond cringe status. 

Pressing the post button was dreadful, and I ended up deleting most pictures an hour after they were posted.

Posting my face onto my friend's timelines every single day and updating my Insta story every minute felt like a whole new level of narcissism. It’s so silly and weird to think influencers easily post these pictures and just ~expect~ people to like them and to care about what they’re up to that day

This goes along with the majority of influencers being narcissistic. In a 2016 study, researchers interviewed 239 influencers on their Instagram habits and found that they all ranked high on the Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale. 

The researchers also said, "narcissists can post and manipulate specific photos to make themselves and their lives appear to be a certain way. Instagram appeals to narcissists because many interactions on it are 'surfacy' or 'shallow.”

The vlogging side to being an influencer is one thing because at the very least you can try to make something fun out of it, but the Instagram part? Absolutely, absolutely, not the lifestyle for me.  

2.) It’s Only Fun if You're Making Money:

If I knew it was guaranteed I could live this lifestyle and start making the same amount of money as the top influencers do, going through the cringe and embarrassment of it all would totally be worth it.

Influencers get paid through brand deals and sponsored ads. Companies will reach out to influencers and ask them to either post a picture of them using or wearing their product, or shout out their company in a video in exchange of receiving anywhere from $200-10,000+ per post.

Social media influencer Tana Mongeau announced on her Instagram story this past week that the clothing company Fashion Nova pays her up to six figures per photo that she posts onto her Instagram wearing their clothing and tagging them in it. SIX FIGURES to post a picture on Instagram. 

Mongeau has also explained in her past videos that clothing companies send her and other influencers exclusive catalogs of clothing articles selected just for them. These items are worth anywhere from $500-5,000. She picks the clothes that she likes, they send them to her for free, she then films a Youtube video of her showing off the clothes and pretending as if she actually shops there, then she can either keep the clothes or send them back. Either way, she still receives a thicccc paycheck for giving the company an online promo.

Influencer David Dobrik stated on his vlog channel that he was able to buy 10 new cars for his friends, plus a new Ferrari for himself, within one year due to giving the company SeatGeek shoutouts on his vlog. 11 new high-end cars in one year...just for talking about a company for literally 45 seconds.  

Without the paycheck and without knowing if I’ll ever get a paycheck, I just don’t see the point in being an influencer just for ~fun~ especially knowing other people are banking off of it.

It’s like people who casually drink. Alcohol doesn’t taste good. There are zero health benefits to it. So if you’re not drinking to get drunk, what’s the point?

Being an influencer is embarrassing. There are horrible mental health benefits to it. So if you’re not posting to get paid, what’s the point? Attention?? Fans?? Feeding into narcissism???? Probably, but I still want a paycheck at the end of the day. 

3.) It Takes A lot of Time: 

Finding the perfect picture to post on Instagram takes. a. lot. of. time. After doing a full photo shoot in my Insta-baddie outfit outside of a 711 (which ties back to the needing self-confidence part and trying to continue on even when customers are staring), I then had to go through 103 pictures and even then I had to take more to find the ~one.~

But it doesn’t stop there!

Trying to edit and FaceTune the pictures like the influencers do was even more time consuming than taking the pictures and picking out the Dolls Kills mixed with Fashion Nova outfit itself.

If it took me that much time trying to decide which picture to post, I can’t even imagine how long it takes influencers, given they have more pressure put on them to post the right one. I only have a little over 4,000 followers to impress online, but real social media influencers have a solid 500,000-1,000,000+ that’s a lot of pressure! Not to mention if they’re posting the picture through a brand deal and the brand doesn’t like the picture, they can take the paycheck back...so their post has to be perfect.

Trying to come up with vlog content also took up a lot of time.

When I wasn’t laughing or cringing at myself, I was vacantly staring into the camera lens trying to come up with something to say, annnnnd I had nothing.

Then there were times where I did think of something to say, but either the sound quality was off or the sentence was worded funny so I would have to do retakes of me talking while also trying to make it sound natural.  

AND THEN, once you FINALLY got your footage, you have to edit it all. The current trend among vloggers is to do quick edits with lots of weird effects and added sounds which took me 8 whole hours to figure how to do, and even then, the outcome was still shitty! !!!

While I still do believe vlogging isn’t real work, I WILL give them credit for their editing skills, now that I consider hard work.

*side note: while I do credit editing film as hard work, it can also be noted that there are vloggers out there who pay someone else to edit their videos for them….SoOOoOo

*side side note: I was going to add the vlog here but after this experiment, I weirdly decided I want to actually try to make a vlog channel this summer since most of my friends already do and I learned a lot from this, so I’m holding onto that content until the birth of my channel.

4.) It Does Hurt Your Mental Health:

While doing my research on what the influencer lifestyle was like, I tried to take note of what they typically eat in a day and what they wore.

From the different “What I Eat in a Day” videos I watched, it mostly seemed to consist of ice coffee (which I already drink on a daily basis so that was easy) and avocados and other super healthy foods.

The common outfit choices I noticed from the wardrobe hauls I watched mainly consisted of crop tops, street fashion, and anything that reveals a lot of skin. 

Going back to a previous statement I made, influencers have a lot of followers and a lot of eyes on them, so it’s easy to see that they do whatever they can to always look their best.

While I did enjoy their food choices and clothing choices the most out of this entire experience (because it tasted good and looked cute), I feel like it would eventually become mentally exhausting to always be sooooo aware and conscious of what you look like at all times.

I mentioned before that I used the FaceTune app like all the other influencer do when editing my pictures before posting them. While I could write a whole other 25-page-long-essay on the dangers of FaceTune itself, I’ll just summarize it by saying this: FaceTune is an absolute evil drug that can trigger body dysmorphia within the user and within people who see the final FaceTuned pictures.

The features on that app that allows for you to look as if you lost 50 lbs, makes you look taller, fixes your skin complexion, and even alters your jawline??? are so dangerous and triggering to people who already suffer from low-self esteem, dysmorphia, and eating disorders, and I strongly suggest not even downloading the app, ever.

I also caught myself checking my phone every second to see how many likes I was getting after posting something. When posting content on social media becomes your job, I can totally see how addicting numbers can become and why people obsess over them. 

In a recent interview with influencer Alexandra Mondalek done by The Guardian, Mondalek said, “I was putting too much weight into who was viewing my Instagram, I would worry about how a post was performing instead of making important calls. I felt a certain pressure to make a brand of myself, and there was so much anxiety in that.”

I also caught myself comparing my posts to similar posts that got more likes and wondering why mine weren’t getting as many, but then would remember that the majority of the influencer’s pictures have been FaceTuned, and they don’t actually look like that in real life so I shouldn’t be comparing myself to them. 

Mondalek also said in the same interview that, “I’d be lying if I said I could look at an explore page on Instagram and not compare myself to what I see on those pages. Someone is purchasing something you can’t purchase or making connections you haven’t yet made. It’s the rat-race lifestyle boiled down into the palm of your hand, and sometimes it feels inescapable.”

Final Thoughts:

After this experience, I will give influencers a bit more credit. This definitely isn't a lifestyle anyone could pull off so props to those who can.

However, I still do not fully see a purpose or meaning in their job. And I'm pretty sure they don’t either — they just like the perks of the lifestyle.

Mongeau has stated several times in her vlogs that she knows she’s talentless and that she just got lucky, and I respect her for owning up to that. 

I guess my core issue with influencers lies within the ones who cannot be honest with themselves and admit their job is meaningless.

These people really aren’t contributing much to society or working that hard, but are still making more money than teachers and some doctor — people who actually work — and it bothers me! Nobody needs that much money! 

But....I did read in a recent study that, “narcissists tend to follow other narcissists on Instagram,” and prior to doing this experiment, I was already following these influencers on my own free will. So, maybe, if we’re being honest here, my problem isn’t the influencers work ethic, but deep down inside I see myself in these people and am just jealous that they’re living a richer life than I am.
