Raquel Welch, Actress and ’60s Sex Symbol, Is Dead at 82
Beginning with a doeskin bikini in “One Million Years B.C.,” she built a celebrated show business career around sex appeal and, sometimes, a comic touch.

Feb. 15, 2023
Raquel Welch, the voluptuous movie actress who became the 1960s’ first major American sex symbol and maintained that image for a half-century in show business, died on Wednesday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 82.
Her death was confirmed by her son, Damon Welch. No cause was given.
Ms. Welch’s Hollywood success began as much with a poster as with the film it publicized. Starring in “One Million Years B.C.” (1966) as a Pleistocene-era cave woman, she posed in a rocky prehistoric landscape, wearing a tattered doeskin bikini, and grabbed the spotlight by the throat with her defiant, alert-to-everything, take-no-prisoners stance and her dancer’s body. She was 26. It had been four years since Marilyn Monroe’s death, and the industry needed a goddess.
Camille Paglia, the feminist critic, described the poster photograph as “the indelible image of a woman as queen of nature.” Ms. Welch, she went on, was “a lioness — fierce, passionate and dangerously physical.”
When Playboy in 1998 named the 100 sexiest female stars of the 20th century, Ms. Welch came in third — right after Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. Brigitte Bardot was fourth.
The critics were often unkind. Throughout her career, Ms. Welch was publicly admired more for her anatomy than for her dramatic abilities. She even called her 2010 book, a memoir and self-help guide, “Beyond the Cleavage.”
But when she had a chance to show off her comic abilities, they were kinder. Ms. Welch won a Golden Globe for her role in Richard Lester’s 1973 adaptation of “The Three Musketeers”; her character was a hopelessly klutzy 17th-century Frenchwoman, torn between two lives — as a landlord’s wife and the queen’s seamstress.
Despite a career based largely on sex appeal, Ms. Welch repeatedly refused to appear nude onscreen. “Personally, I always hated feeling so exposed and vulnerable” in love scenes, she wrote in her memoir, noting that even when she appeared in a prestigious Merchant Ivory film (“The Wild Party,” 1975), the filmmakers, those acclaimed arbiters of art-house taste, pressured her to do a nude bedroom scene, to no avail.
“I’ve definitely used my body and sex appeal to advantage in my work, but always within limits,” she said. But, she added, “I reserve some things for my private life, and they are not for sale.”
Jo-Raquel Tejada was born in Chicago on Sept. 5, 1940, the oldest of three children of Armando Carlos Tejada, a Bolivian-born aeronautical engineer, and Josephine Sarah (Hall) Tejada, an American of English descent. They had met as students at the University of Illinois.
When Raquel was 2, the family moved to Southern California for her father’s work in the war effort. At 7, encouraged by her mother, she enrolled at San Diego Junior Theater, where her only early disappointment was being cast in her first play as a boy. She began ballet classes the same year and continued to study dance for a decade.
After graduating from La Jolla High School in San Diego, where her nickname was Rocky, she received a scholarship — thanks to success in local beauty pageants — to study theater at San Diego State College. But she dropped out at 19 to marry her high school boyfriend, James Wesley Welch. Because of her local celebrity, she landed a job as the “weather girl” on KFMB, a San Diego television station.
The birth of her two children complicated her career plans, but she soon left her husband — “the most painful decision of my entire life,” she called it — and moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. (They divorced in 1964.)
She had hoped to move to New York instead, she recalled. But the trip would have been prohibitively expensive, and, anyway, she didn’t own a winter coat.
It was not long before she had a contract with a major studio, 20th Century Fox. She had early hopes of making her big-screen debut in a James Bond movie; the producer Albert R. Broccoli wanted her for “Thunderball.” But that dream was quashed when she was cast in “Fantastic Voyage” (1966), a science fiction film about scientists reduced to microscopic size to travel inside a diseased human body. Then came “One Million Years B.C.,” and that did it.
“There’s a certain thing about that white-hot moment of first fame that is just pure pain,” Ms. Welch said in an interview with Cigar Aficionado magazine in 2001. “It’s just not comfortable. I felt like I was supposed to be perfect. And because everybody was looking at me so hard, I felt there was so much to prove.”
She appeared in some two dozen films over the next decade, perhaps most notably “Myra Breckinridge” (1970), based on Gore Vidal’s campy novel, in which she played a glamorous transgender woman, and “The Last of Sheila” (1973), a semi-campy murder mystery with a luxury-yacht setting and a script by Stephen Sondheim.
Some of her most memorable roles were small ones. In “Bedazzled” (1967), Stanley Donen’s Faustian fantasy with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, she played Lust, one of the Seven Deadly Sins; in “The Magic Christian” (1969), with Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr, her character’s name was Mistress of the Whip.
Ms. Welch had love scenes with the former football star Jim Brown in “100 Rifles” (1969), a western set in Mexico. She followed “The Three Musketeers” with its 1974 sequel, but those films never led to the sophisticated comedy opportunities she had hoped for. (She did, however, have a memorable chance to display her comedic side years later, when she played herself in a 1997 episode of “Seinfeld.”)
After “Mother, Jugs and Speed” (1976), a farce about ambulance drivers (which also starred Bill Cosby and Harvey Keitel), her screen acting was limited mostly to television guest appearances.
But she had already discovered the joys of stage work. Inspired after seeing Frank Sinatra’s nightclub act, Ms. Welch made her club debut, singing and dancing, at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1973. Eight years later she made her Broadway debut, hired as a two-week vacation replacement for Lauren Bacall in the hit musical “Woman of the Year.” Her reviews were so admiring (Mel Gussow’s in The New York Times ended by writing, “One hopes that Miss Welch will soon find a musical of her own”) that she returned the next year for a six-month stint in the role.
“The first minute I stepped out on that stage and the people began applauding,” she told The Times later, “I just knew I’d beaten every bad rap that people had hung on me.” She returned to Broadway in 1997, replacing Julie Andrews for seven weeks in “Victor/Victoria.”
In 1987, Ms. Welch published “The Raquel Welch Total Beauty and Fitness Program,” which included exercises based on the principles of hatha yoga. She released a companion video with the same title.
Michael Levenson contributed reporting.
A correction was made on Feb. 15, 2023: An earlier version of this obituary misstated how much time elapsed between Marilyn Monroe’s death and the release of the movie “One Million Years B.C.” It was four years, not three.

airflow and ventilation.
do you ever not do something you love for so long that the desire and longing begins to consume you, but every time you try to make time for it something else takes it away from your attention and you're left with this odd feeling... like, when you've finally taken a warm shower and drank hot chocolate after a long, tiring day, then you accidentally touch a stainless steel surface and the chill lingers in your fingertips, spreading to the rest of your body, rendering you in a state of physical tension, the exhaustion setting in you as you realize you have to start the process of getting comfortable all over again?
haven't finished the book i started reading in october because chores have torn me away from being able to sit down and do nothing long enough — mansfield park, beautiful hard copy with gilded edges, got it from this annual book sale, it was the last one. haven't continued writing any of my stories for nearly a year and to compensate for it i jot down every little thought and idea i have about them in a notebook i began keeping specifically for my writing: chapter summaries, characterizations, plot threads, thematic details, lists of potential names and titles (i hate coming up with names and titles because i place so much significance in them), dialogue-heavy scenes formatted like a screenplay. haven't knitted in a month because i just moved to a new apartment and am too busy unpacking and setting up the place to feel like a home to watch murder, she wrote and finish my projects: an unfinished scarf, three headbands with unwoven seams, and a sling bag i may or may not unravel because i no longer like the design/pattern i went for.
it must be some big cosmic joke that i, who has carpal tunnel syndrome, hate for my hands to be so creatively idle that i inadvertently resume another hobby i had set aside for several years due to a creative block with renewed drive and inspiration. maybe what i really need is a fidget toy.
our former apartment was never properly ventilated. if we fried food opening a window wasn't enough to let the smoke out because it also didn't get proper airflow. i'd have to splash water in my face or stick my head in the freezer for a few seconds for some sense of relief, for my eyes would water so terribly that it would force them shut. this is how my mind feels when it has been long too idle. today it was unendurable; i decided to reread the first few chapters of daphne du maurier's rebecca.

In 2019, Maria Jimenez felt under siege. Seventy-two and in poor health, Jimenez had a problem with hoarding that attracted the attention of Camarillo, California, code enforcement officers. She had bought her house in 1981 with her late husband and worked two jobs to afford the mortgage. She raised her children there, teaching them to work hard and follow the rules. Now, city inspectors had begun issuing her citations.
When she called the phone number on a HomeVestors ad, she reached Patriot Holdings, the successful franchise run by brothers Cody, Chris, Casey and Cory Evans with their partner Scott Mansfield.
“I need help,” she told the person on the phone.
Cory Evans arrived the next morning. According to court documents, he told her: If you sell to me, I’ll clean the house up and code enforcement will go away. If you don’t, the city will come with its trucks, pack up your belongings and take your house. While that wasn’t true, it scared Jimenez into signing a sales contract on the spot.
The next day, a social worker arrived to help with the code violations. She assured Jimenez the city wouldn’t take her home and taught her about programs to help older adults clean up their properties.
But after Jimenez tried to cancel the sale, Evans sued her for breach of contract. In arbitration, Patriot Holdings demanded $150,000 to release its claim on the house, Maria’s daughter Patsy Jimenez said. The stress took its toll on Maria Jimenez, who suffered a mild stroke, Patsy said.
Meanwhile, criminal investigators in Ventura County took an interest in the case. After they found a second elderly victim who was pressured by Evans into selling his house, the district attorney filed felony charges against Evans of attempted grand theft of real property and attempted theft from an elder. He pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted grand theft, dropped his lawsuit against Jimenez and served his sentence on probation. His conviction was later expunged in accordance with California law.
Jimenez saved her home, but the trauma from the experience continues, her daughter said. “She feels guilty. And, I go, ‘Mom, you were a victim.’”
Neither Evans nor the franchise responded to requests for comment. A spokesperson for HomeVestors’ corporate office said Cory Evans is no longer associated with the franchise.
“We are not aware of any complaints since the removal of Cory Evans from the franchise,” the company said.
The year after Evans pleaded guilty, he and his brothers received an award from HomeVestors recognizing their “top sales volume.”

IceMan Investments Update – New Season 2023/24
A new season is upon us, and IceMan has come up with some new selections to boost the portfolio. As ever we are looking for incremental year on year growth. IceMan is always punting for a purpose and will donate some of the inevitable profit to Anti-Fascist organisation Hope not Hate.
I always seems to be posting these updates against a dramatic political backdrop, I suppose that is just the reality of life since 2016. Trump has just been indicted (again), Putin continues his flailing Russian imperial project in Ukraine and closer to home Sunak is going to war in defence of ‘Motorists’. What a load of Bollix, what saddo actually identifies as a ‘Motorist’. I am a Husband, Father and Grandfather etc and well down the list, I am a bloke who sometimes drives a car. My interests as a ‘motorist’ are massively outweighed by my concern for pollution and the environment that will have a major impact on my children and grandchildren (and everybody else’s, even self-described ‘Motorists’).
Ok on with the Football.
Premiership, Arsenal without Man City 9/4
I was seriously going to give this league a miss this year. It is a great product on the pitch but the dodgy owners, too much money and hype mean I have fallen out of love with the Premiership. So, there is all that plus the fact I was struggling to come up with a betting angle, one of the IceMan rules is don’t force it, if there is not a good prospect, then walk away, don’t just take a position because it is ‘the big one‘ or you feel obliged to have an interest.
Then I was reminded of the without Man City market. Last year I had what in hindsight looked to be a ridiculously conservative bet on Arsenal top 6. This year I am being more ambitious and backing the Gunners to win the title without Man City, basically I pick up if Arsenal win or come second to City. The reason for the confidence is Arsenal will have learned a lot from last year’s campaign and they have have made some good additions to the squad, principally Declan Rice, a player about who I have mixed opinions, I don’t think I will ever forgive him for turning his back on the Republic of Ireland.
Championship Leicester City Promotion 13/8
I considered staying with last years selections Middlesbrough who made the play offs. I fully expect them to be there or thereabouts this year, however I am hoping for a team that might snatch an automatic promotion place. This makes consideration of the relegated premiership sides a must, of those, I feel Leicester are best placed to make a quick return. There are negatives, an untested manager, the sale of some of their most talented players and hoping there is not too much of a hangover following a disappointing premiership season. Recruitment so far has been solid rather than spectacular. Having said all that, they do have a massive operating budget and a good depth to their squad. they will be able to make more acquisitions both now and in the January window. They have not been missed in the market , Ideally, I would have liked a better price, however a winning shortie is better than longer priced loser.
League one – Bolton promotion 11/4
Once more, I did consider last year’s pick Peterborough, who gave a decent account of themselves by making the play offs. Expect them to be in the shake out again. It was difficult to overlook the claims of Bolton. This team has improved incrementally each season under Ian Evatt and made the play offs last season. Ironically their success in the EFL Trophy was a distraction that may have cost them promotion last term. Very optimistic they can go one better this season.
League Two Stockport 5/4 and MK Dons 11/4 both for promotion
Very much against my usual MO I am going in two handed here. As ever I considered last year’s picks Mansfield, but not for long, they are always fancied but have proved to be perennial under achievers.  A more tempting throwback to last year would be to rejoin the Wrexham bandwagon and their push for back to back promotions. Their Hollywood profile now means they have been found in the market and hold little appeal at current odds. A very good alternative is Stockport who are tested at this level and were very unlucky not to be promoted last year, missing out in the play-off final after making a bold promotion push following a slow start to the campaign. They have retained the core of that squad and made some smart additions like Nick Powell who has been successful at higher levels. Price is a little skinny but is a fair reflection of their chances. The other play in this division is MK Dons, like most football fans I dislike this club immensely due to their historical foundations when they pulled some US franchise nonsense to move what was Wimbledon FC to Milton Keynes. Anyways, IceMan don’t do emotional on sports investments. This side look the best of the relegated teams and if impressive boss Graham Alexander can get them to click, they represent decent value in the promotion market.
National League Chesterfield 6/4 and Gateshead 25/1 Promotion
Ok so much for my normal MO I am going in two handed again in a league that has been a happy hunting ground over the years. First up is the obvious and unavoidable Chesterfield. They are the market leaders for a reason. They were beaten in last year’s play off final and the division looks easier this time around following the promotions of Wrexham and Notts County. Manager Paul Cook normally operates at a higher level than this. He has added to an already strong squad and I am hoping they can secure the automatic promotion slot, but taking the insurance of having the play offs as a safety net.
The second tip is more adventurous as with the exception of Chesterfield, I feel the league has a very open look. Gateshead look a bit overpriced at 25/1. They are a solid unit and have had a good pre-season. They need a massive step up in form to challenge for the play offs but that is why they are priced 25/1.
Scottish Premiership - Aberdeen without Celtic/Rangers 9/5
Regrettably I can’t find a Celtic angle, it would be great if my financial and emotional interests aligned but this is not the year. Therefore, I am sticking with last years pick Aberdeen. Such was their improvement under Barry Robson that I can only get about half last year’s odds on this selection. They have a great forward line and look set to outgun Hibs and Hearts. Go on The Sheep.
Scottish Championship - Dundee United 11/8 to win the league.
So, we visit the City of Jute again. last year Dundee done us a favour and this year we hope their city rivals Dundee United can do the same. Not gone unnoticed to me that United have issued a new third kit that gives a nod to their Irish heritage, as they were founded as Dundee Harps. Like Dundee, United are hoping to rebound after a poor premiership season that ended in relegation. The case for United is the same as Dundee last year, they should just have enough class and depth in their squad to be successful at this level. A twist on this position is that United Manager Jim Goodwin was Aberdeen boss last year and was a big reason why I tipped them, however he had a shocking time and ended up getting sacked, they only improved after his departure. I still rate him as a manager, and he is an Irishman. (Not that any sentiment comes into it).
Scottish League One Hamilton Academicals 5/2 to win the league
We are backing one of the best sounding names in Scottish football, and there are many. Like Leicester, MK Dons and Dundee United I am getting involved with a relegated side again. There are always worries that last year’s poor form and losing habits can continue into the new season. I am less concerned in this case than some of the others as The Accies have made some good additions to the squad and have performed well in pre-season. Falkirk look an obvious danger, but they always seem to find a couple of sides too good for them and have become regular under achievers.
Scottish League Two - Stenhousemuir to win 6/1 each way
I am rolling the dice again on Stenny. Last year they were underwhelming finished in sixth place. They trade at 6/1 rather than the 9/2 I took last year and that looks good value in a very competitive division. The reasons to be optimistic are an uptick in results following the appointment of Gary Naysmith last January. The club have also been busy adding some useful new additions to the squad. Hopefully they change it up and at least make the top 3. Go Warriors
Bundesliga - Union Berlin top 4 11/4
I always have a look at the top European leagues in search of a bit of value. There was nothing in the Spanish or Italian markets to whet my appetite. The German Bundesliga looks to offer some value with Union Berlin to make the top 4. A negative is that they will have to contend with playing Champions League games this season which could stretch the squad, however they did go quite deep in the Europa league last season while managing a 4th place finish. On a positive, Bayern and Dortmund should take the top two places and with all due respect to Monchengladbach and Freiburg. I believe this leaves Union, Leipzig , Frankfurt and Leverkusen to fight over the two remaining slots. I think 11/4 represents a good price as Unions close rivals have all lost some serious scoring talent.
An Oldie
Politics Lab/Lib Coalition 7/1
This is still a ‘live ‘position’ and the current cash out exactly matches my stake so no change in the odds. I will keep this open, however personally I don’t expect a formal coalition even if Lab come up a bit shy of an overall majority.  Then again, I said no chance of Brexit or Trump winning in 2016, so what do I know.
There is a part of me that would quite like the Lib Dems to have some leverage on Labour as I reckon i Anyways, let’s get these Tory feckers out. It will help Lab take stronger positions on better relations with EU and proportional representation.
So that is it, the money has been placed in the market. I can sit back and enjoy the ride.

Where is How to Be a Cowboy Filmed
Where is How to Be a Cowboy Filmed? All Filming Locations
How to Be a Cowboy is a show that premiered on Netflix— it is a one-season Netflix original docuseries, which follows Dale Brisby, a cowboy internet superstar. He uses social media and rodeo skills throughout the show to keep the cowboy way of life alive in the modern day.
Dale is a bull rider and rancher who loves to show people the cowboy way. Mainly, the How to Be a Cowboy show is filmed in Winnebago, Texas. However, there are some other filming locations for the series, too, such as Possum Kingdom Lake and Decatur, Texas. We will go over all of these filming locations below!
Radiator Ranch
Radiator Ranch is one of the filming locations of How to Be a Cowboy, located in Winnebago, Texas. Interestingly, though, Winnebago is not a real town in Texas. This has been falsified to keep the real location of Radiator Ranch more private. The business address of Radiator Ranch, though, is located in Newcastle, Texas, a small town in the northern part of the state.
Radiator Ranch is the ranch that Dale Brisby is the ranch manager of. It is a sprawling property that has plenty of room for the animals to roam and explore, and also includes areas such as rings and arenas. Radiator Ranch is home to a menagerie of animals. These include cattle, horses, cats, and dogs.
Graham Livestock Commission
The Graham Livestock Commission is another one of the settings we see in the How to Be a Cowboy show. This is actually one of the first filming locations that we see, because it appears in the very first episode of the show. In Episode 1, the team heads out to the Graham Livestock Commission so that Dale Brisby can get rid of a stubborn and unruly bull named Carl Wayne. Graham Livestock Commission is in Graham, Texas. Every Monday at noon, they offer livestock sales.
Possum Kingdom Lake
Episode 3 of How to Be a Cowboy brings us to Possum Kingdom Lake— what a name! Dale Brisby rides an inflatable on the lake in this episode while they are on this visit. Possum Kingdom Lake is actually a reservoir and is located on the Brazos River. It is located in Palo Pinto County, Texas, primarily. POssum Kingdom Lake is a well known and popular summer destination, and this is largely because of its famed clear blue water. In fact, Possum Kingdom Lake is said to have the clearest and bluest water in all of the southwest!
Decatur, Texas
How to Be a Cowboy visits Decatur, Texas in Episode 4. Dale Brisby and his brother Leroy go here to practice roping right outside of Decatur with the famed Trevor Brazile. Trevor Brazile is a 26 time World Champion and 14 time All Around Cowboy World Champion. In addition to these accolades, he was the first PRCA cowboy to make over $3 million in earnings. He has a ranch outside Decatur, which is where the brothers went to visit on the show. It has a 100 acre parcel of land and houses many world class Quarter Horses.
Double Horn Ranch
Episode 4 sees a visit to Double Horn Ranch. Double Horn Ranch is in Bluff Dale, Texas, and hosted Craig Cameron’s Cowboy Challenge. Craig Cameron’s Cowboy Challenge is a challenge that includes roping, cattle sorting, and a muddy feed race competition as well. Craig Cameron is well known for his horsemanship skills. He even teaches these to others through his company Ride Smart Horsemanship. His website says that “Ride Smart Horsemanship encompasses the values, teachings, and lifestyle of the horseman and the legend, Craig Cameron. In the three decades since he began, Craig has established himself to be one of the preeminent figures in the horse industry today.”
JC Knapp Rodeo Co
Episode 5 of How to Be a Cowboy sees them visiting JC Knapp Rodeo Co. This is a spot in Mansfield, Texas, in the Dallas Fort Worth area. The intern, Jorden, visits the JC Knapp Rodeo Co in this episode. JC Knapp Rodeo Co is an award winning stock contracting company. They have plenty of bulls and horses in their care that are well suited for rodeo uses!
Tex Rickard Arena
The How to Be a Cowboy cast and crew visit a spot called Tex Rickard Arena for Donnie’s rodeo in their sixth episode. The Tex Rickard Arena is in Henrietta, Texas. Every September, those who live in this area gear up and prepare to go to the Clay County Pioneer Reunion and Rodeo held at the Tex Rickard Arena. Among the many events and attractions here are turtle races, parades, barbecues, a rodeo, and plenty of vendors!
Johnson County Sheriff’s Posse
In Episode 6, we saw Jordan’s rodeo, which was held at Johnson County Sheriff’s Posse in Cleburne, Johnson County. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Posse is known for hosting an annual ranch rodeo in Cleburne, Texas. There are plenty of events that are part of the festivities. These include stray gathering, wild cow milking, team doctoring, and trailer loading, too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Dale Brisby?
Dale Brisby is a man who wears many hats. He is a rodeo competitor, social media and Youtube star, and also a ranch manager at Radiator Ranch Cattle Company. He was also on the show How to Be a Cowboy. Dale’s real name is Clint Hopping, and he received a master’s from Texas A & M for agriculture. His passions are rodeo and bull riding, and he even has his own line of Dale Wear merchandise that features his face and some of his famous catchphrases.
Will there be a second season of How to Be a Cowboy?
The first season of How to Be a Cowboy was released on Netflix on September 1, 2021. There is plenty of desire and anticipation for another season, but unfortunately, as of right now, there has not been any sort of official announcement from Netflix to say whether there will be a Season 2!
