Carla Ramirez - 31, bisexual, morning show co-anchor
Sunshine beamed down upon the hills of Los Angeles in a manner that proved perfect for Carla. Born in Austin and having spent most of her life in sunnier states, Carla was long since used to warmer climates and she much preferred spending her time in Los Angeles whether the weather was much better in comparison to the chills of New York City where she’d previously worked.
As well as the climate, Los Angeles had a much richer culture and history compared to the Big Apple, the glamour and shine of Old Hollywood still permeating through despite decades having passed since that golden era. In a way Carla wished she had been born in that era rather than in the early 1990s, but she could at least indulge herself in Old Hollywood where she could, her home being the most prominent example of that.
“You know why I bought this house over all the other ones I looked at?” Carla mused to her lover as she leant in the gateway to her residence, her gaze flicking between them and the door. “Because Jayne Mansfield once lived here. It’s a little known fact but this was her hideaway during her heyday in the 1950s, paid for by a tycoon with whom she was also having a torrid affair. Rumour has it that she may have even entertained Jack or Bobby Kennedy here, which makes my living here rather apt, no?” Carla mused, her gaze coming to rest back on them as she finished speaking, barely a second going by before she continued again.
“You know, the whole thing about you being married but struggling to fit me, your mistress, into your busy schedule? Didn’t think to call first before showing up this time?”

"A bird... or something...": The story of Mothman and other 'flying men'
Certainly Strange: A Podcast About The Unexplainable, episode 7
Listen on: YouTube  Spotify  Castbox
"It was a bird... or something."
It was the 15th of November, 1966, and Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette were joyriding through a maze of dirt roads that connected abandoned world war two bunkers, late at night in Point Pleasant West Virginia. They had just driven past an abandoned generator plant when they saw… something. A huge figure in the darkness, just off the side of the road. And it was watching them. With huge, blood red eyes.
"I'm a hard guy to scare" Scarberry later said to the local newspaper, "but last night I was getting out of there." He slammed the gas and tried to manoeuvre his car out of the dump area as quickly as possible, away from the strange creature that watched them. And as they fled, they all saw the creature, something that looked like the hybrid between a man and a bird, standing on a hill by the side of the road.
And then, it started following them. It hoovered above the car, chasing them. “We were driving one hundred miles per hour and that bird kept right up with us. It wasn’t even flapping its wings.” The women started crying. The creature followed them until the couples reached the National Guard Armory on Route 62. They thought they had finally lost the strange man-bird, but once they turned the car around, there it was again. It seemed to be waiting on them.
The creature was over six foot tall, grey, with a wingspan of 10 feet. "It was like a man with wings," Mallette said. "It wasn't like anything you'd see on TV or in a monster movie..."
The Scarberries and the Mallettes gave a statement to the police. "If I had seen it while by myself I wouldn't have said anything," Scarberry commented, "but there were four of us who saw it."
At first, the four witnesses were the laughingstock of the town. But soon, stories started to surface, old and new. They were definitely not the only ones who had witnessed the creature that is now known as the Mothman.
On that very same day, on November the 15th 1966, the Mothman had been spotted by a farmer about 90 miles away in Salem. Newell Partridge was watching television when at 10:30pm he heard his German shepherd named Bandit howling. The farmer went out to check on his dog with a flashlight, when he was met with two large red eyes, like red reflectors, staring at him.
Bandit took off towards the creature that threatened his master, into the night. Then, the farmer could hear his dog screech and whine. And he never saw him again.
The strange thing? In their eyewitness report, The Scarberries and the Mallettes told the police that, while they were being chased by the Mothman, they had seen something, lying on the side of the road. It had been a carcass. The carcass of a dead dog.
The very next day, the Mothman was spotted by one Mr and Mrs Wamsley and their friend Mrs Bennett, who were driving through the world war two bunker area on their way to visit a friend. They parked the car in a darkened area several feet from the residence, and knocked on their friend’s door. When they found him not at home, they headed back to the car. This is where they saw it. In the darkness, a shadowy figure lurked behind the automobile.
“It rose up slowly from the ground. A big, grey thing. Bigger than a man, with terrible, glowing red eyes.” Said Bennett. According to her own statement, when Bennett saw the creature, she was so horrified she fell on her baby whom she had been holding in her arms.
There were dozens of Mothman sightings during the next several weeks. One witness, Mrs. Roy Grose, saw the creature through her kitchen window, early in the morning when her barking dog had awakened her. She say a large multicoloured object hovering over the treetop in a field across the road. That same day a local teenager encountered a huge birdlike creature with his car, and claimed that it had followed him for more than a mile.
Tom Ury, a young shoe salesman, was driving down route 62 at 7:15 in the morning on his way to work, when he spotted a towering figure standing by the road in an adjacent field. Suddenly it had spread its wings and took off straight up. The figure then started circling his car like a bird, and kept flying over the car even at the speed of seventy-five miles per hour, much like as he had done to the Scarberries and the Mallettes. Tom was apparently so frightened by this encounter, he did not get into work that day.
In total, there were around 200 sightings of the Mothman in the year 1966 to 1967. But it was not the first time something like a bird-man was spotted near Point Pleasant.
In 1961, 5 years prior, a woman was driving down route 2 along the Ohio river with her father when she spotted a winged figure. She had just passed by a park when a tall figure suddenly appeared in the road ahead of her. It was a grey figure with folded wings across its back, like how one would describe an angel. Startled by the car, the creature unfolded its wings, which “practically filled the whole road”, and then the mysterious creature took off.
However, the woman and her father were not the first to ever witness the creature that would become known as “The Mothman”. In 1948, the Army officials at McChord Field in Washington state were approached by the 61-year-old Mrs Bernice Aikowski, who claimed that she had seen a man-bird in her backyard in nearby Chehalis.
“I know most people don’t believe me, but I have talked to some people in Chehalis that tell me they say the man, too. It was about 3 PM on January 6th, and there were a lot of small children coming home from school at the time. They saw the man, too, and asked me if they could go into my backyard so they could watch him longer as he flew towards the south end of the city.”
According to her, the flying man-bird seemed to be a man equipped with long silver wings fastened over his shoulders with a strap, like one of the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci.
On April 9th, 1948, two Longview Washington state residents named Viola Jonson (a laundry worker) and James Pittman (a janitor) told journalists that they had seen several men with flying suits and goggles, flying through the air, circling the city at a hight of 250 feet. Two similar flying men were sighted near Butte in Oregon, on September 16th that same year.
In 1971, at 2AM in Norton Massachusetts, police sergeant Thomas Downy was driving home along Winter Street in Mansfield. As he approached a place known, ironically, as Bird Hill in Easton, he was confronted by a huge winged creature that was over 6 feet tall with a wingspan of eight to twelve feet. As sergeant Downy drew to a stop at the intersection, the birdman flew straight up, disappearing over the dark trees into the swamp. Downy reported the sighting to the Easton police when he arrived home and a patrol car searched the area, but the man bird was never seen again.
These birdmen are not sighted exclusively in the United States, however. Plato and Homer already wrote about a race of winged men in Ancient Greece. On July 11th, 1908, the Russian explorer VK Arsenyev sighted a winged humanbeing near the mouth of the Gobilli river. Sightings have also been reported in Portugal, England, and Vietnam.
The many sightings of the Mothman came to an end on the 25th of December in 1967, when the Silver Bridge, connecting Point Pleasant with Gallipolis collapsed. 46 people died, and it is still known as the deadliest bridge collapse in the history of the United States. Next to the Mothman sightings, the Silver Bridge collapse was the second terrible and bizarre thing to put Point Pleasant on the map in one year’s time. So it was not hard for people to seek a connection between the two.
Some eyewitnesses claimed that they had seen the Mothman at the bridge that day it collapsed, blaming the creature for the disaster that killed so many. Of course, it is a way of mourning to seek an explanation, someone to blame, for this terrible loss of life.
People did indeed think that the Mothman was a bad omen, a demonic vision that foreshadows a great disaster. The Mothman does bear the resemblance of a demon, the embodiment of fear itself.
A more realistic based explanation for the Mothman comes from Dr. Robert L. Smith, an associate professor of wildlife biology at West Virginia University, who said that the description of the Mothman all fitted the sandhill crane, the second largest American crane, which stands almost as high as a man and has a wingspan of more than seven feet. He said the “red eyes” could be the large red circles around the crane’s eyes. The appearance of the bird could have been moulded into the image of a monstrous creature through mass hysteria.
So, is the Mothman an image of the mind, the demonic embodiment of fear? Is it simply a bird, mistaken for a monster through mass hysteria? Or… is the Mothman real? Whatever he was or whatever he may be now, still, he is certainly strange.

Carrie Mae Weems
Tumblr media
Carrie Mae Weems (born April 20, 1953) is an American artist who works with text, fabric, audio, digital images, and installation video, and is best known for her work in the field of photography. Her award-winning photographs, films, and videos have been displayed in over 50 exhibitions in the United States and abroad, and focus on serious issues that face African Americans today, such as racism, sexism, politics, and personal identity.
She said, "Let me say that my primary concern in art, as in politics, is with the status and place of Afro-Americans in the country." More recently however, she expressed that "Black experience is not really the main point; rather, complex, dimensional, human experience and social inclusion ... is the real point."
Early life and education
Weems was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1953, the second of seven children to Carrie Polk and Myrlie Weems. She began participating in dance and street theater in 1965. At the age of 16 she gave birth to her first and only child, a daughter named Faith C. Weems. Later that year she moved out of her parents’ home and soon relocated to San Francisco to study modern dance with Anna Halprin at a workshop Halprin had started with several other dancers, as well as the artists John Cage and Robert Morris. She decided to continue her arts schooling and attended the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, graduating at the age of 28 with her B.A. She received her MFA from the University of California, San Diego. Weems also participated in the folklore graduate program at the University of California, Berkeley.
While in her early twenties, Carrie Mae Weems was politically active in the labor movement as a union organizer. Her first camera, which she received as a birthday gift, was used for this work before being used for artistic purposes. She was inspired to pursue photography after she came across The Black Photography Annual, a book of images by African-American photographers including Shawn Walker, Beuford Smith, Anthony Barboza, Ming Smith, Adger Cowans, and Roy DeCarava, who Weems found inspiring. This led her to New York City, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, where she began to meet other artists and photographers such as Coreen Simpson and Frank Stewart, and they began to form a community. In 1976 Weems took a photography class at the Museum taught by Dawoud Bey. She returned to San Francisco, but lived bi-coastally and was invited by Janet Henry to teach at the Studio Museum and a community of photographers in New York.
Career and work
In 1983, Carrie Mae Weems completed her first collection of photographs, text, and spoken word, called Family Pictures and Stories. The images told the story of her family, and she has said that in this project she was trying to explore the movement of black families out of the South and into the North, using her family as a model for the larger theme. Her next series, called Ain't Jokin', was completed in 1988. It focused on racial jokes and internalized racism. Another series called American Icons, completed in 1989, also focused on racism. Weems has said that throughout the 1980s she was turning away from the documentary photography genre, instead "creating representations that appeared to be documents but were in fact staged" and also "incorporating text, using multiples images, diptychs and triptychs, and constructing narratives." Sexism was the next focal point for her. It was the topic of one of her most well known collections called The Kitchen Table series which was completed in over a two year period, 1989 to 1990 and has Weems cast as the central character in the photographs. About Kitchen Table and Family Pictures and Stories, Weems has said: "I use my own constructed image as a vehicle for questioning ideas about the role of tradition, the nature of family, monogamy, polygamy, relationships between men and women, between women and their children, and between women and other women—underscoring the critical problems and the possible resolves." She has expressed disbelief and concern about the exclusion of images of the black community, particularly black women, from the popular media, and she aims to represent these excluded subjects and speak to their experience through her work. These photographs created space for other black female artists to further create art. Weems has also reflected on the themes and inspirations of her work as a whole, saying,
... from the very beginning, I've been interested in the idea of power and the consequences of power; relationships are made and articulated through power. Another thing that's interesting about the early work is that even though I've been engaged in the idea of autobiography, other ideas have been more important: the role of narrative, the social levels of humor, the deconstruction of documentary, the construction of history, the use of text, storytelling, performance, and the role of memory have all been more central to my thinking than autobiography.
Other series created by Weems include: the Sea Island Series (1991–92), the Africa Series (1993), From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried (1995–96), Who What When Where (1998), Ritual & Revolution (1998), the Louisiana Project (2003), Roaming (2006), and the Museum Series, which she began in 2007. Her most recent project, Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, is a multimedia performance that explores "the role of grace in the pursuit of democracy."
In her almost 30-year career, Carrie Mae Weems has won numerous awards. She was named Photographer of the Year by the Friends of Photography. In 2005, she was awarded the Distinguished Photographer's Award in recognition of her significant contributions to the world of photography. Her talents have also been recognized by numerous colleges, including Harvard University and Wellesley College, with fellowships, artist-in-residence and visiting professor positions. She taught photography at Hampshire College in the late 1980s. She was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2013. In 2015 Weems was named a Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellow. In September 2015, the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research presented her with the W. E. B. Du Bois Medal.
The first comprehensive retrospective of her work opened in September 2012 at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, Tennessee, as a part of the center's exhibition Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video. Curated by Katie Delmez, the exhibition ran until January 13, 2013, and later traveled to Portland Art Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Cantor Center for Visual Arts. The 30-year retrospective exhibition opened in January 2014 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. This was the first time an "African-American woman [was] ever given a solo exhibition" at the Guggenheim. Weems' work returned to the Frist in October 2013 as a part of the center's 30 Americans gallery, alongside black artists ranging from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Kehinde Wiley.
Weems' work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Portland Art Museum, the Tate Museum in London and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Weems has been represented by Jack Shainman Gallery since 2008.
A full-color, visual book, titled Carrie Mae Weems, was published by Yale University Press in October 2012. The book offers the first major survey of Weems' career and includes a collection of essays from leading and emerging scholars in addition to over 200 of Weems' most important works.
Weems lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn and Syracuse, New York, with her husband Jeffrey Hoone. She continues to produce art that provides social commentary on the experiences of people of color, especially black women, in America.
Weems is one of six artist-curators who made selections for Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection, on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum from May 24, 2019, through January 12, 2020.

Three Reasons For Air Duct Cleaning in Armonk NY
Of all the arguments for air duct cleaning in Armonk NY residents need to pay close attention to the three listed below. A family's home is often their greatest asset next to their family. Both are greatly impacted by air ducts and many problems resulting from poor air duct conditions affect the health and happiness of families.
Mold
Too many families in Armonk NY know the devastating effects of mold. Most people conjure up the smell which often accompanies a mold outbreak. While the smell cannot be overlooked the effects of mold on the lungs is quite significant and often deadly. Many people have allergies to mold and when mold is present in the air they develop allergy symptoms ranging from a stuffy nose to hyperventilation. Those with asthma fare worse when in a room with a mold infestation. All too often the mold can be traced back to air ducts.
Pests
No one likes to think of mice or bugs living in their homes. Whether one thinks about it or not they often take up residence. It takes only an eighth of an inch crack to allow these pests into a home. Most pests don't like human contact and hide quite well in a home's walls, floors, and air duct system. By getting regular air duct inspections, Armonk NY homeowners can catch pest infestations before they become too big. Air duct cleaning technicians are trained in what to look for in regards to all varieties of pests. Catching mice, roaches or even raccoons before they take over a home is worth the cost of a regular inspection every time.
Maintaining Home Value
All homeowners know the value in maintaining household appliances and systems. It's recommended that air conditioning units and furnaces by cleaned yearly, roofs and insulation be checked every few years and major appliances be cleaned and checked once a year or so. Air ducts should be seen no differently. Not only should they regularly be inspected in the spirit of good maintenance habits, but for other reasons as well. Cleaning AC units and furnaces are a smart idea but often release harmful toxins and allergens into the air which gets trapped in the air duct system contaminating the air in every room of the house. Only through regular inspections by trained professionals can these contaminants by detected and removed.
With today's economy threatening home market values protecting the value of the home should be every homeowner's first priority. Most professionals agree that regular maintenance is one of the first steps to guaranteeing a house stays in tip-top condition for many years. Air duct cleaning is just one aspect of home maintenance. With the availability of professional air duct cleaning Armonk NY residents can breathe easy and rest assured that their homes are the safe haven they should be.

Synopsis : Free Book Lost Los Angeles FREE DOWNLOAD
Astonishing images of vanished Los Angeles, from the landmark Ambassador Hotel to the original life-sustaining Zanja MadreLos Angeles is less than 150 years old, yet in that short time a great deal has been built and torn down. Like most cities it has suffered the loss of classic old cinemas, Victorian hotels, and grand railroad stations, but L.A. has also seen the passing of major industries, film companies, film lots, hills, airfields, piers, and a speedway. Citrus groves have come and gone, oil derricks have sprung up in their place and been replaced by housing tracts. The movie industry moved in from New York and Chicago, expanded, contracted, and then sold off their lots. National radio stations built, then soon vacated, grand art decos studios around Sunset & Vine. Abbot Kinney's vision of a Venetian suburb was largely filled in after the banks eroded. This book displays an extraordinary variety of lost glories from this unique city: Barker Brothers, Beverly Hills Speedway, Bradbury Residence, Casa Don Vincente Lugo, Chaplin Airfield, the community in Chavez Ravine, Church of the Open Door, The City of Los Angeles train, County Records Building, Court Flight, the Egyptian marquee, Eternity Street, Fort Moore Hill, Grand Central Air Terminal, Helms and Van de Kamp bakeries, La Grande Station, the MGM backlots, Mount Lowe Railway, Pan Pacific Stadium, Jayne Mansfield's Pink Palace, Richfield Oil Building, Sears, the Temple Block, Theme Building at LAX, and Wrigley Field.

Vegas Hopes ‘Statewide Pause’ Forms Bridge To COVID-19 Vaccine And 2021 Recovery
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/vegas-hopes-statewide-pause-forms-bridge-to-covid-19-vaccine-and-2021-recovery/
Vegas Hopes ‘Statewide Pause’ Forms Bridge To COVID-19 Vaccine And 2021 Recovery
Las Vegas Strip at night.
Las Vegas remains open but with limited action. Nevada’s “statewide pause” hopes to balance economic and health risks from coronavirus until deliveries of new Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines arrive for the most vulnerable people – hopefully before New Year’s.
On Thursday, December 3rd, Nevada recorded a record 48 COVID-19 related deaths and 18.1% positivity rate, although hospitalizations dropped. Eighteen of the 48 reported deaths came in Clark County, Nevada’s largest county which makes up greater Las Vegas. Clark has suffered elevated rates of COVID-19 transmission for the past seven weeks going back to October and the start of cooler weather. Hospital occupancy rates hit 84% and ICU rates hit 69%, both above average, while 16 of Nevada’s 17 counties report elevated transmission. The surge continued through the weekend.
Gov. Steve Sisolak cited a White House Coronavirus Task Force warning in a press conference last week. “We are in a very dangerous place due to the current, extremely high COVID baseload and limited hospital capacity,” it read. “We must flatten the curve now.”
Lounge singer Wayne Newton aka “Mr. Vegas” provides a public service message on the Vegas Strip, … [] fall 2020.
Sisolak himself recently recovered from a mild case of COVID-19.
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman recently criticized Gov. Sisolak as a “dictator” for ordering draconian, economically ruinous restrictions without seeking input from mayors like herself. According to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), Las Vegas unemployment dropped to 12% in October after peaking in April at an unprecedented 34.2%. The unemployment rate is still roughly double the rate in northern Nevada and the US of 6.7%.
Restaurants and other businesses have been reduced from 50% to 25% capacity. Traffic through McCarran Airport, while rebounding in recent months, remains down over 50% from this time last year. New Year’s events, including fireworks and the Fremont Street Experience party, have been canceled.
Also last week, Centers for Disease Control director Robert Redfield warned the next few months may be the “most difficult in the public health history of this nation, largely because of the stress that it’s going to put on our health care system.”
The disease disproportionately affects older people and those with health problems. According to the CDC earlier this year, fully 94% of COVID-related deaths happened to people with at least one other serious underlying condition like heart disease, diabetes and lung disease. Surgeon General Jerome Adams reported the average age of people who succumb to coronavirus is 80 years, older than the US average life expectancy of 78.9 years.
Under the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed to deliver 300 million vaccine doses, with the first by the end of 2020, two vaccines have been developed and tested in record time. Pfizer developed their vaccine with Germany’s BioNTech. Pfizer sought approval back on November 20th, and the Food and Drug Administration is meeting on it December 10th. Pfizer’s vaccine requires two doses given 21 days apart. Moderna’s vaccine requires two doses given 28 days apart. The FDA meets for Moderna’s vaccine on December 17th. Both report 95% efficiency based on early trials with no safety concerns, which is more than double the seasonal flu vaccine’s roughly 40% efficiency.
Vaccines will first go to vulnerable populations – frontline workers and elderly in long-term care facilities. In Nevada, that ‘tier one’ group numbers about 173,000, or a little more than 5% of the population. According to Nevada Health Response, the state should receive 164,150 doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines by New Year’s. The FDA reports 20 million Americans could be vaccinated by the end of 2020, and 100 million by the end of February. Warp Speed is shooting for enough vaccine to treat the entire US population by June 2021.
Until then, governments face crisis. In neighboring California, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered a minimum three-week stay-at-home shutdown in the vast majority of the state. A number of county sheriffs, including in Los Angeles County which oversees ten million residents, have refused to enforce the order as unconstitutional. They will instead focus on education, voluntary actions, and confronting large “super-spreader events.”
Las Vegas’ unemployment spiked to record levels virtually overnight in April 2020 as the coronavirus … [] pandemic hit.
Las Vegas and Nevada, like cities, states and nations around the world, are trying to balance the risks of COVID-19 with the risks to freedom and health of shutting down.
“Vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young,” writes the Great Barrington Declaration written by Drs. Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford, Sunetra Gupta of Oxford, and Harvard’s Martin Kulldorf. The declaration is misunderstood and thus controversial, according to The Wall Street Journal’s editorial “Epidemiologists Stray from the COVID Herd.” Tens of thousands of doctors, scientists, and other health professionals have signed it. “Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health,” Bhattacharya, Gupta and Kulldorf write – from other untreated illnesses to economic devastation, mental illness, and suicide – including among children kept out of school.
Governments “should stop using lockdowns as your primary control method,” agreed World Health Organization’s Covid-19 envoy Dr. David Nabarro this fall.
Nevada is attempting a middle ground.
According to Forbes, Fitch Ratings analyst Colin Mansfield reports that a full Vegas recovery won’t come until the convention business returns. And that will require successful deployment of COVID-19 vaccines or other treatments. In their October report, Fitch predicts a full Vegas recovery won’t likely happen until 2024.
Las Vegans hope it happens a lot sooner than that.

Are the Stars Out Tonight?
The “Can you not” reaction from a subway passenger in Manhattan early this week, unaware he was sharing the car with NBA megastar LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavs teammates, illustrated a classic New York minute. Even if he had recognized James, New Yorkers and Los Angelinos take pride in giving celebrities their space when they encounter them at restaurants, concerts and other public places.
There is, however, one place in Los Angeles County where it’s not only okay, but actually cool, for local residents to feel star struck: Griffith Observatory, a mecca for mankind’s curiosity about space.
Tumblr media
During my early Los Angeles days, even before the years I lived in Los Feliz, Griffith Park and its famous observatory were frequent destinations for me when friends and family came to L.A.
There were lots of lures that drew my visitors to Griffith Observatory: the expansive views, including one of the best vantage points to photograph the Hollywood sign; the building’s stately art deco design; free admission to its array of scientific exhibits.
Visitors older than me dig seeing the place where key scenes from Rebel Without A Cause were filmed, which explains the bust of James Dean that sits on the Observatory’s grounds. During the ‘90s, fans younger than me liked seeing where Paula Abdul shot the video for her song “Rush, Rush,” which re-created scenes from Dean’s 1995 film.
The Observatory has, in fact, appeared in more than 30 movies, from as early as The Phantom Empire in 1935 to as recent as last year’s La La Land, and more than 40 TV shows.
If you take out-of-town visitors there, plenty of other attractions loom nearby in Griffith Park, the largest metropolitan park in the U.S. Just down the hill from the Observatory is the Greek Theatre; among the park’s other points of interest: Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens, Autry Museum of the West, the train exhibit that is the Travel Town Museum and miles of hiking trails.
So, there’s lots to see and do around the Griffith Observatory but if you haven’t been inside it in the last 11 years, you owe it to yourself to check out the major expansion that happened when it closed for renovation from 2002-2006.
Tumblr media
Exhibits on the main level were spruced up, with new attractions added, but go downstairs and you find a new spacious wing with lots of exhibits that are as snazzy as they are instructive. Also new in the lower level: a café, gift shop and the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater.
Showing daily in that theater is a 24-minute documentary about the landmark destination, The Once and Future Griffith Observatory, narrated by Nimoy. On the first Friday evening of every month, the theater hosts All Space Considered, a free event during which Observatory staff and expert guests present hot-button topics from the fields of astronomy, space science and space exploration.
Upstairs, three presentations rotate in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium: Centered in the Universe, Water Is Life and Light of the Valkyries, the last mentioned an exploration of the Northern Lights.
Over and above all these attractions is the show that unfolds each night in the sky. Griffith Observatory’s free telescopes are available every night—other than cloudy ones and Mondays, the only day of the week that it’s closed. I saw Saturn during one memorable visit.
Tumblr media
Notice that word “free.” As stipulated by the will of Griffith J. Griffith, the benefactor for whom the Observatory and the park in which it stands are named, the building has never charged admission since it opened its doors in 1935. There’s a nominal charge for the planetarium shows, although even there, children under 5 get free tickets.
The Observatory is also a hub for activity and learning when special phenomena occur overhead, like an alignment of multiple planets, a meteor shower or a lunar eclipse. Not only did it stage a viewing of the solar eclipse in August that was attended by thousands, but a buddy of mine who waited too late to buy safe eclipse glasses at most outlets was able to find them at Griffith Observatory’s gift shop the day before it happened.
Griffith Observatory is operated by the City of Los Angeles through the Department of Recreation and Parks, but those tax dollars don’t pay all of the bills. For example, the city once funded field trips to the Observatory for fifth graders, but when budget cutbacks put that program in jeopardy, a group of supporters called Friends of the Observatory (FOTO) started to fund those field trips in 2008 at an annual cost of nearly $200,000.
That’s one of multiple programs funded by FOTO, which was founded in 1978. Members get benefits, but beyond dues, FOTO also accepts individual donations. And, one such contribution now comes from Causes and Effect. --Geoff Mayfield

Hollywood Legends Never Grow Old
It all started with Vampira. (I wonder how many stories start that way?) I first read about her in a special edition of Rue Morgue magazine: Rue Morgue Library #2, Horror Movie Heroes. My fascination led me to Vampira: Dark Goddess of Horror by W. Scott Poole, both a biography for Ms. Maila Nurmi and a cultural study of the middle-American anxiety that contributed to the creation of her alter ego: Vampira.
I found out through Poole’s book that after she passed away in 2008, Vampira’s fans and admirers chipped in to have her remains interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Now the scene for onscreen funerals and off-screen social events, many Hollywood greats rest in peace on Santa Monica Boulevard.
When I first visited Los Angeles as an adult in 2015 with my husband Adam, best friend Kris, and mother-in-law Jessica, I took them on a hunt for Vampira’s final resting place.
While circling around the pond in the Garden of Legends, I saw my mother-in-law inch towards a duck resting in the grass. “Don’t pet the duck, Jessica,” I warned. I continued walking northwest when I heard: “Shit! The little fucker bit me!”
We eventually found Vampira, after visiting Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Jr., Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, and Tyrone Power. I grinned like crazy in photos posed next to my spooky idol, a happy ending to my first “grave hunt” of many. What a rush!
Tumblr media
One year and several apartment applications later, I took friends to Hollywood Forever whenever they visited me in Los Angeles, always searching for someone “new-to-me”: Peter Lorre, the Talmadge Sisters, Janet Gaynor and her ex-husband Adrian, John Huston, Fay Wray…
Once I built up the courage to drive on California highways and interstates on my own (honestly, the wait wasn’t very long), I moved on to bigger fish: Forest Lawn Glendale, Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, and Westwood Memorial Park. I found quiet sanctuary in a bustling city of millions. I admired the statuaries and murals, the labyrinths and mausoleums. The mixture of religious art and political dogma, plus a good dose of masonic imagery, occasionally unnerved me. And sometimes, amongst the crosses and stars of David, I spotted inverted pentagrams. As above, so below, I suppose.
Some of my favorite memories of visiting and living in LA occurred in cemeteries. I will forever treasure the time I spent in front of Oscar Levant, the Freed Unit’s resident hypochondriac, perfectionist, and wise guy. I spent over an hour searching for Fritz Lang. My sister found Buster Keaton because his grave doubles as a PokeStop. I sneaked over the security chain to get a closer look at Clara Bow. I became a morbid tourist.
Tumblr media
I figure, since I’m not a professional historian or researcher, how else could I ever get this close to Hollywood history without undertaking a book project and applying to peruse university and Academy archives? (I have since discovered the magic of the Hollywood Heritage Museum, but that’s a whole other blog post!)
I know I’m not the only movie fan with this macabre hobby of touring gravesites. In fact, many take it a step further by using paper and pencil to make rubbings of headstones. Others even befriend local groundskeepers to gain access to “private” gardens that house the likes of Mary Pickford and Humphrey Bogart. If only I had the chutzpah!
Every autumn, my husband and I travel to Los Angeles for #SpookTrip, our once-a-year horror-centric free-for-all. This year, I made multiple excuses to make detours and visit two of my favorites, Judy Garland and Bette Davis, and two new-to-me graves of screen legends: Charles Laughton and Vincente Minnelli. I hope that by paying my respects and sharing my enthusiasm for their work, I can help continue their legacies and teach future generations about their contributions to film. But also, I just really like graveyards.
