Maybe something spooky for September?
Like... Genuine fear.
Caine makes a new adventure for the gang, but it ends up taking in things that are... Just too real...
P.s: Showtime?
-that one paper bird
A/N: spooky season is upon us! Special thanks to @13piecebucket for helping me brainstorm this!!
NIGHTMARE'S END
A DIGITAL CIRCUS ONESHOT
WARNING: body horror, swearing,
~~~
"Welcome back, adventurers!" Caine hovered over the Circus cast. "Hope you had fun today!"
The group looked amongst themselves with collective disinterest. Pomni spoke up. "Actually, Caine, this one was a bit...meh."
Caine was visibly taken aback.
"Yeah, we got bored more than half way through." Jax agreed. "The cartoon physics and faceless NPCs are a bit old hat at this point."
"What he means is we think more realism would suit the adventures better." Pomni corrected. "The immersion still isn't that immersive."
"Doesn't help that we all look like cartoon characters." Gangle quietly added.
Caine rapped his fingers against the shaft of his cane. "Very well. If realism is what you want, then realism is what you'll get. At least, to the best of my ability. Rest up! Tomorrow will be a big one!" He blips away.
"You three should be ashamed of yourselves." Ragatha scolded. "I'm sure he's already doing all he can."
"I don't really care, I was just going along with Pomni." Jax put his hands in his pockets and walked away.
"Hey!" Pomni stomped her foot. "It was ZOOBLE'S idea we say something!"
"Don't drag me into this. I just said the adventure was stupid. All of them are." Zooble said as they walked away.
Pomni groaned. "Whatever. Guess we'll have a real adventure tomorrow. See how that turns out." She went to bed almost immediately, sleep called to her like never before. Her one escape from this digital nightmare.
~
Pomni woke to the smell of smoke. She winced as she sat up on a hard, uncomfortable surface. She blinked, finding herself in a small, dark room that has no familiar shapes. "Huh...? Why am I not in my-!!" She gaped at the sight of a smoldering computer atop a desk next to her.
Pomni stood to get a closer look. The electronic remains glowed faintly in the only light source in the room, a street lamp coming through a half shaded window. She jumped when she heard shuffling behind her.
Five figures of varying size stand up from the floor, the voices familiar. "Ugh, my head." "Where are we?" "Why is it so dark?"
"Guys?" Pomni asked. "What's happening? OH MY GOSH!" She pointed at a tall man with blond hair, staring right at her. The man turned to see what Pomni was pointing at.
"What? What is it?"
"Kinger?" Pomni couldn't believe it. She looked at the other people in the room. Humans. All of them. She looked at her own hands. Human hands with five fingers splayed out in front of her. "We're...we- no, this isn't possible. I'm dreaming! I have to be. I fell asleep and woke up here! I-"
Pomni froze when an androgenous person with pink hair slapped her across the face. "Did that feel real?"
Pomni felt her face. "OW! That was uncalled for! I really felt that. Oh my god." She looked back at the destroyed computer. "Caine...he must of blown all the hardware trying to make the game more real. I didn't think he'd... oh no."
"WHO CARES! WE'RE OUT!!" Celebrate a young man with a huge grin.
"Are we really sure? Really really?" A woman with red curls asked.
"Fuck if I know." The person with pink hair stopped and seemed stunned by they're own ability to curse. "Holy shit." They gasped, a huge smile growing on their face. "ASS! TITS! DICK! CUNT! SHIT! MOTHERFUCKER!"
"Do you really need to shout?" A timid woman asked, covering her ears.
"YES, I DO! WE'RE OUT!!"
~
The six made their way out of the empty office building. Cool night air grazed their faces as they took in their surroundings. They were in a town. A real town with streetlights and parked cars and a distant blinking traffic light. The street was lined with closed businesses. Not another soul in sight.
"What time do you think it is?" The timid woman asked.
"There!" The woman with red curls pointed at a scrolling LED sign in front of a bank. "3:00 am. No wonder things are so quiet. What do we do now? It's been so long... I don't even remember where we are."
"I guess we walk until we find somebody." Pomni shrugged. "There's gotta be at least a cop or something out at this hour."
"Oh yeah, and what do we tell them? Help, police! We've been kidnapped by a sentient AI and we just got away! Yeah, I bet that'll go over real well." The young man with the wide grin snarked.
"They could at least help us get out bearings." Pomni said.
They walked past quiet buildings, feeling a bit out of place on the empty street. Eventually, finding a sign that said Welcome to Brook Haven, the loveliest place in Maine.
"Well, that's a start." Said the woman with the curls. "Do you remember much about Maine, Pomni?"
"I don't think so, but I'm sure if we keep looking, we'll find someone who does. And, you don't have to keep calling me Pomni. My name is...my name..."
Everyone stopped.
Pomni's eyes widened as she searched her head. "I don't remember...I should remember. Right? Do any of you remember??"
"Oh no! You don't think the mind wipe was permanent, do you??" Panicked the timid woman.
"I don't know!" Pomni clutched her head and started to pace. She faced a store window and her blood went cold. Before her wasn't the reflection of a human woman, but of a cartoonish jester staring wide eyed at her. Pomni could feel the air in her lungs cease. "We're still in the game."
The shrill scream of a siren tore through the night. Everyone covered their ears, but they could still feel the siren vibrating their very beings. A billowing thick grey fog rolled into the streets. It cloaked everything from sight, the town being swallowed whole.
The group backed up against one another, being surrounded by the intense fog. Pomni was back to back with the tall blonde man, but she nearly fell backwards when he was violently pulled into the mist. "Kinger!"
Next was Ragatha. Something in the mist grabbed her leg and she was dragged off screaming. Then Gangle. Then Zooble.
"Screw this!" Jax ran off in a random direction, but didn't get far before he too screamed bloody murder.
Pomni was left alone in the quickly shrinking pocket of visibility. Her heart pounded. The only place left to go was the store behind her. She tried the door. Locked. She banged on the window. It held firm.
Clicking and skittering came from the fog. Creatures beyond her sight and comprehension were moving about, taunting her. A thorned tentacle whipped out at Pomni, but she ducked and it smashed through the store window.
Thinking quickly, Pomni vaulted through the broken window and made a run for it. Creatures screeching and crashing through the building behind her as fog poured in.
As she ran through a back door and down an alley, she saw a leas pipe sticking out of a dumpster. She grabbed it and kept running.
A clawed hand dug into the ground next to her and a black creature with colorful eyes lunged at Pomni. She batted at the creature as hard as she could, bursting it's bright pink eye. It screamed and backed away.
Pomni kept running, zig zagging down semi clear streets. Something with wings swooped down at her and she tuck and rolled. The flying abstraction crash landed where she had been. She didn't give it a chance to strike again, she beat it over the head with her pipe until it stopped thrashing.
"What the FUCK is all of this!?" Pomni growled and kept moving as more moving shadows in the mist closed in on her. She needed to get indoors. She ran until a large brick building was in sight. The sign out front read: Town Hall.
Pomni threw herself through the double front doors and slammed them shut behind her. She leaned back against the doors, panting and gasping for air. She was sweating, her legs shook with fatigue. She still felt real, even if she knew the truth.
"You're still alive. Good." Caine's voice echoed through the building.
"CAINE!? CAINE, YOU BASTARD! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO THE OTHERS!!"
"Such language. And you all wonder why the censor is so necessary. You can't control your tongues."
"WHERE ARE THE OTHERS??" Pomni screamed as she marched down the hall, following the source of Caine's voice down one hall and then the next.
"Let's not worry about them. You're the only one who made it this far. The rest have failed."
"Failed? YOU DON'T FAIL AN ADVENTURE!"
"In a realistic one, you do. In real life, there are clear cut winners and losers. Tell me, which one are you?"
Pomni could hear the grin in his condescending tone. "Whichever gets this over with." She gripped her pipe harder.
Caine's laughter filled the halls. "A winner, then? That remains to be seen."
Pomni followed the voice to a set of grand wood doors. A Mayor's Office plague on the wall. She kicked open the doors, ready to swing. There were no monsters, no mist. Caine was at the end of the large room by the desk. His back was to her, looking out the large windows. "Beautiful, isn't it? Dare I say, this town has been my greatest creation."
"You lied! You made us believe we were out! I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD!" Pomni shouted as she marched forward.
"Lied?" Caine turned towards Pomni. "I gave you exactly what you wanted. Realism. I made it so real, I even found a purpose for the old exit." He chuckled. "It was amusing seeing all of you celebrate. Shame the fun had to be spoiled." His body jerked as he stepped forward.
Pomni stopped, holding her pipe in front of her. She watched in horror as Caine's chest started to split apart, black teeth folding out at her. His arms lengthened and bent at unnatural angles. "What- what's happening?"
"The most realistic part..." His voice deepened and garbled. "Fear." His eyes split apart and changed colors. His suit tore and his spin jutted out with spikes. Her grew and grew in height, his teeth growing sharp and his jaw extended to the ceiling. Multiple arms broke the floor apart as he approached. "Are...you...afraid?"
Pomni brought the pipe back like a bat. "Terrified. But I'm still going to kick your ass." She charged without hesitation, war in her eyes. Caine's monstrous form bared down on her. She struck out at the eye in the center of his gaping jaw.
The pipe's collision creates a spark bright enough to blind Pomni. The whole room goes white. She feels weightless, like she was in the void again. Then, in a near instant, she fell on her back. When the light fades, she's back in the Circus. The obnoxiously saturated bright colors sting her eyes.
Around are the cast members, all in varying states of shock. Zooble stays on the ground, staring at the vaulted ceiling and trembling. Gangle is in hysterics, muttering and whimpering to herself while crying uncontrollably. Kinger is pale and sitting in the fetal position, his eyes wider and more bloodshot than normal. Ragatha is stone cold silent and unmoving, holding her head in her hands.
Jax Is the only one other than Pomni to get to his feet. "That wasn't so- bleeeeegh!" He doubles over and vomits.
Pomni stares at her gloved hands, already missing her realistic skin. A slow clap gets her attention. She turns to see Caine hovering, lowering himself to her level.
"Well done, Pomni. Well done, indeed. You are today's winner. Being the only one to successfully find and defeat me. You faced fear and conquered it. How's that for realism?"
"Wait... If at least one of us had to find and defeat you... What if none of us did?" Pomni asked.
Caine smiled and shrugged. "Guess we'll never know. So, 1-10?"
The cast stayed where they were, unresponsive. Pomni smiled at Caine. "Ten. Solid ten. That was the biggest thrill I've had yet."
"Yet." Caine's grin widened.
3rd Day "long day, long night" (Scene 3)
"――――――――" I know I won't be able to do anything even if I do go. But still――――I still feel her hand in mine. I told her we'll try our best. She shook the hand I held out. So――――
"Man, there's nothing else I can do…!!" I'll be killed if I go up the hill after that giant. My body is trembling from that fact, but I suppress it and run up the slope.
"Saber――――!" I run into the open land. …And then. The scenery that awaits me there is totally unexpected.
Gravestones are flying around. Every time the giant swings his sword, the heavy gravestones are split in two. ―――In the midst of it… A knight bravely runs through the storm of gravestones.
The axe-sword rages around. Gravestones are flung aside. In the chaos, Saber is fighting Berserker with the same―――no, with more power than before.
"――――――――" "" Their positions are reversed here. The advantage belongs to someone with a small body like Saber. Berserker is hindered by obstacles, and Saber acts as if there's nothing in her way.
I'm sure that a hindrance of this degree is only trivial for Berserker. But it's more than nothing. It's only a slight difference, but that slight difference is tipping the scale the other way now―――
"This way…! You'll get hit if you're there!" "Huh!? Whoa…!?" "What are you thinking!? I told you to run away, right!? Or did you not hear me!?" She's really angry.
"Um―――I heard you. But I can't just run away, right?"
"What!? How could you reach that conclusion!? Can't you tell that you'll only be a bother to us since you can't fight!? It can't be helped if you die trying to make a difference, but it'd be meaningless if you die doing nothing!"
"――――?" …I don't know why, but Tohsaka is seriously angry. Even though I'm getting yelled at, I don't feel bad for some reason.
"―――Hey, is that something you should get mad about? It shouldn't matter to you if I die meaninglessly or not." "It does matter! I told you I'd let you go for all of today, so it'll trouble me if you don't get home safely!"
"……" …I'm confused even more now. Tohsaka sure had a different face on at school.
"―――Geez. Anyway, you're not hurt, so run away right now. That Ilyasviel girl intends to kill us all."
"I know that. But I can't run away. Saber's fighting, so I can't run away by myself."
"…That's a line for someone who can make a difference. You'll just die a meaningless death, as you can't do anything to support her. This is your last warning. Just run away." "That can't be true. There should be something I can do as long as I'm alive. And besides, are you going to ask someone to do something that you can't do?"
"――――――――" Tohsaka looks at me with a serious expression. "…You're right. I'm the shameless one for asking you to do something I can't do."
She looks away. "―――Well, I don't think there's a need to run away. I don't think Saber will lose now." Tohsaka takes a peek from behind the tree.
Their battle is continuing without change. Berserker's attacks smash through empty space and only destroy his surroundings.
Between the attacks… Within the swirling whirlwind and flying clods… Within the rain of broken gravestones… Saber rushes in without even dirtying her armor and attacks Berserker.
"……" It is a divine work of utmost excellence. My fear has disappeared, seeing this battle that is totally impossible for mere humans. Instead, I am fascinated.
I could not believe I was in this Holy Grail War thing, and I also had some uneasiness. But all of it is blown away when I see her.
Dancing swords. Within the whirlwind of fatal destruction, the knight challenges the enemy without hesitation.
…Maybe this scene made me accept everything. No matter what may fall upon us in the future… I'm convinced that I will be able to match even a fierce god if I have Saber with me.
"…I thought so. It was strange, but she blocked Berserker's sword on purpose." Tohsaka murmurs without emotion.
"…Was that to lure Berserker here?" "Yup. It's suicidal to fight Berserker in a place without cover. That's why Saber chose this place as the battleground. She did it naturally, too. She got Berserker away from you, all the while she pretended to be cornered."
"――――――――" …Then… Saber must have determined that this place was a suitable battlefield when we were walking down the hill.
"But you can't expect backup in a battle like this. Our enemy is a monster that even nullifies Archer's arrows. Backup was meaningless from the start." Tohsaka murmurs as she watches the battle between Saber and Berserker.
"…Archer's arrows…" But those words catch my attention. Archer isn't here. If he really is an archer, he should not fight hand-to-hand, but――――
"She got him――――!" Tohsaka snaps her fingers. Just as she said… Saber's sword must have hit Berserker, or he must have lost his footing. Berserker's body, holding firm until now, loses its balance.
"―――――――" The beast lashes out desperately. Saber dodges it by jumping back, and holds her sword with both hands.
――――This is it. As his desperate attack is dodged, Berserker loses his balance even more, and Saber bends her knees to charge in with all her power.
Right then… "――――Archer…? What do you mean, get away…?" I notice Tohsaka's confused voice, and sense an intent to kill aimed from a faraway place.
"――――――――" Behind me. I see the knight in red standing on a rooftop hundreds of meters away, readying his bow.
"――――――――" It's either nausea or a chill. He's readying a bow. A bow that's no different from before. It cannot even scratch Berserker, even with a direct hit. So there is no need to feel any threat from it――――
"――――――――" ―――I feel a chill. What he is readying in his bow is not an "arrow", but something completely different. And his intent to kill isn't just directed at Berserker.
"Sab――――" I act instantly. I―――
spending the past 3 months analyzing a character that was dead when i got into dsmp has payed off lets goooo
this got long so im putting it under a readmore
/rp
c!Wilbur is incredibly depressed and self-deprecating, and has been for pretty much the entire plot, so it’s not surprising it’s gotten even worse after ~9 years alone in an empty void with only a man he hates for company. He obviously thinks it’d be better off had he never existed, “the server would’ve been better off without us,” and he’s still extremely suicidal. He doesn’t want to come back, because he thinks everyone’s better off without him.
And he tried to wipe every trace of his existence away before dying. His one goal in the last few months of his life was to destroy his country, and he fully intended on going down with it. He only ever lashed out at himself, and L’Manberg. Other than that, I can think of the pit scene, which I always saw as a manic break where he was completely out of his right mind after the stress of the Festival, killing Jack Manifold on the 16th, and the whole Fundy-spy thing. He saw both of them as traitors, (we can’t forget about his paranoia,) and Fundy was his son, a part of him he had to distance from himself to avoid hurting him.
One thing that’s changed is the way he treats Tommy. In Pogtopia, he seemed convinced that Tommy would come to see he’s doing the right thing. He’d try and convince Tommy of his perspective on things, and in turn he’d listen back in his moments of lucidity (October 17th comes to mind). Wilbur wasn’t even completely convinced of his own plan on the day of the Festival, as he left the call to Tubbo. Tommy also used to be innocent, in his eyes. Wilbur was fully ready to take all the blame for blowing up L’Manberg, and refused to do it when Tommy threatened to take himself down with it. Again, he was only willing to hurt himself.
Now, Wilbur’s convinced he’s right. He’s convinced he’s evil, and has always been this way, and everything he’s ever done was bad. He completely ignored every complaint Tommy had today. He’s done listening to others. He also seems to think Tommy was complicit in causing the problems of the server. Even though Wilbur’s the one who first suggested emancipation and Tommy just went along with it - he blames Tommy too. Before, Tommy was innocent. Now, he’s as bad as Wilbur himself. What happened? He’s happy that Tommy died - was he just lonely? Or does he believe he can convince him of his points, that he’s irredeemably evil? Does he think he can make Tommy believe they're better off dead?
Wilbur tends to view his life as a story. Other characters draw parallels, and so does he (Ozymandias speech my beloved) but he also uses narrative tools to describe the situations around him. His Chekhov’s gun, referring to Tommy as the protagonist, even declaring himself the villain. And unlike the parallels drawn by others, once he decides that’s the way the narrative is, he follows through with it. He didn’t have to blow up L’Manberg, but because of his Chekhov’s gun and the narrative satisfaction it would bring, he did. He didn’t have to become the villain when the story in his mind painted him as one, but he did. And now he’s spent a decade stuck in his own mind, convinced he’s evil, and so he’s dedicated to filling out that narrative role. “I know the way I am.” He believes he can only cause pain, destruction, and suffering because he’s the villain.
He doesn’t want to come back to life, I don’t think. He didn’t on January 20th, and honestly, all the threats of what he would do if he gets revived feel like just that - threats, to keep him dead. Yes, he will probably be bad when he comes back, but he’s being open about it to try and stay dead. Wilbur hides his pain behind facades, rarely being openly self-depracating. When he was President, he was the well put-together leader. In Pogtopia, he hid it behind his anger and destruction. Now, he’s sheltering himself behind the fact he’s evil, so he doesn’t get brought back. He doesn’t believe anyone does or should want him alive again. He was surprised in the s2 finale when Tommy said they wanted him back, and now he’s trying to convince him otherwise.
The only way I could see a redemption happening is if he stops viewing himself as the villain, but for that he’d have to stop viewing life as a story. He’s done too much bad and is too entrenched in his self-given role for him to simply change. But even then, he’d still be deeply depressed and have driven away everyone around him.
And now he has access to insane information like the end of the Universe? What was Tommy going to ask him before he brought out that tidbit? Does he have access to the script? That would be a cool meta way to bring the plot and a neat reference to cc!Wilbur having been the writer both in s1 and s3. It’d also tie into his worldview, the way everything’s a story - because it literally is, and now he knows it. I’d love him to be nihilistically resigned to being the bad guy, since it’s fated to be that way.
#dream smp#dsmp#mcyt#dream smp analysis#wilbur soot#dsmp wilbur soot#no listen you dont understand how much i love this bitchboy#he's such a complex character#you have his need for relevancy; the way he views everything as a story; the paranoia after Eret's betrayal#the way he hides his emotions until he snaps - which ties into Ghostbur. wtf is up with Ghostbur#i could talk about any aspect of his character for a very long time please send me asks#most of this is based on what others have said and pointed out btw. that i tied in with todays stream#but watching vods and stuff. yeah its all so accurate it hurts#mans really destroyed me with one line today huh ('i know the way i am') like... please
black magic [01]
REQUEST. arranged marriage + enemies to lovers (sukuna is a simp and lowkey a housewife)
CONTENT/WARNINGS. some suggestive scenes, but overall fluff and romance! slight crack fic, I guess? I was laughing when I wrote this lol
NOTES. I NEED A HUSBAND! SUKUNA I’M GOING TO CRY GOODBYE THIS HAS ME SOFT. also anon i’m not sure if you wanted something with more ~sexual tension~ since this is kind of just comedic, but I hope you like it anyway!
part one | part two (nsfw)
“This is new,” you comment with a glare, your ankle propped on Sukuna’s knee.
“Shut up,” he rolls his eyes, pushing your skirt aside to clean the wounds you attained through exorcising curses. You’ve taken a particularly strong curse today and you’re caught off guard, barely finishing the mission unscathed. Limping all the way back home isn’t easy especially since you live on top of the darned mountain, but if Sukuna’s going to kneel in front of you like this...maybe it wasn’t too tough a journey. “You should stop going to missions you’re not ready for. Look at you, all wounded and bloody.”
“You sound like you care.”
“You’re my wife,” he huffs while dropping the bloody towel on the floor. Sukuna wraps the bandage around your ankle and carries you bridal style even though you’re perfectly capable of walking, but he shoots you a silencing glare. You’d have knocked him in the face any other day, but he’s particularly warm and smells nice today – plus you’re beat – that you bury your face in his chest, ignoring that stupid fluttering in your stomach. “Of course I do.”
You snicker, mind tracing back to your earlier years of this dreaded marriage.
It definitely wasn’t the best – the memories blurring between strangling each other to making out as if breathing was never a thing – and it felt like forever ago when you first met him.
You’d never say it out loud, but... you don’t regret this arranged marriage. Not when Sukuna is tucking himself beside you on the bed, your head above his muscular chest a place similar to home. He covers both your bodies over with a blanket, pulling your body closer to him with a strong arm, his lips pressing onto the crown of your head.
Ugh, you think to yourself, giving in to the need to cuddle your husband after a long day of work. You still refuse to say it out loud, though, and you irk him further by muttering, “That’s not what you said two years ago.”
“I wasn’t in love with you then.”
“I refuse to be married to you!”
Sukuna fights back the urge to cover his ears. Ever since your clan decided to visit his land and started exorcising curses one by one, his life has been nothing but hell. Not only are your relatives the most arrogant people ever with a consistent god complex, they just had to let their little mortal child be in charge of taking on the stronger curses. Seriously, what were they thinking, sending you – who’s barely even out of their training bra years – to deal with curses like him?
Everyone knows Sukuna is a no bullshit man. He won’t hesitate to cut your head off the moment you came raging at him, but then he sees how young you are and decides to send you back to your family.
Expecting that everyone would just call it a day and he’d get offerings for his unexpected mercy, Sukuna is beyond stupefied when they send you back to his temple, all dressed pretty with a basket of fruits and flowers braided in your hair. He remembers growling because you look adorable, but that’s easily wiped away when you open your mouth, your voice scratchy against his ears as you stomp your feet like the young mortal you are.
Sukuna pushes a thumb to his forehead to ease the impending headache, and that’s just from your presence. Something inside him tells that you’re going to be a bigger pain than you look.
“You don’t have much of a choice. You should’ve thought of that before deciding to run rampage over my land,” he reminds, turning boredly to his lone servant from above his throne. Sukuna isn’t impressed, to say the least, especially with your clan’s audacious proposition to gain his favour just this once. “Is this really the woman you bring me – the one they insist to be my wife?”
“She is their best fighter, my Lord.”
Well, he can’t disagree to that. You did, after all, single-handedly give him a cut on the cheek. “She’s feisty indeed.”
“Don’t talk as if I’m not here!”
“Mouthy too,” he mumbles to himself, but your sorcerer senses are sharp and easily picks up on it. He sees you flush angry again, looking immensely adorable with your tiny fists clenched like that and he snorts, waving a hand in the air. “Whatever. Get the wedding over with,” he nods to his servant, his sigh loud and tired as he makes his way to you.
You don’t stiffen at each haunting step, his eyes only glimmering harder with entertainment. It’s rare to find a mortal that doesn’t quiver at the sight of him, the urge to break you only growing stronger.
Even as he cups your face, making sure to not let his claws dig into your precious skin, Sukuna smirks. You’ll be entertaining indeed.
So Sukuna makes a promise, four eyes surveying the way your body is starting to fill in curves at the right places, the swell of your flesh just perfect in his hands... He chuckles to himself, daunting you further as he leans down to your ear, taking pleasure in the slight way your breath hitches. “Maybe then I’ll get to teach you a lesson or two.”
You’re definitely something else, taking advantage of each presented opportunity and not wasting any time before you make your move. Right after the wedding and everyone’s left, leaving you alone with your new husband behind closed doors; you push him until he’s on the ground, legs straddling each side of his hips while you growl above him – the sound similar to a battle cry.
Sukuna merely smirks, barely moving a muscle as his large hands come up to rest on your hips to steady you. “I’ve imagined countless ways you’d be on top of me like this,” his eyes light up with humour upon feeling the cold blade on his skin, “None of them included a knife on my neck though.”
“Shut your mouth. I will kill you myself,” you warn, pressing your knife harder until it draws a slight tinge of blood.
You hardly look threatening above him like this, dolled up to look the best in your wedding with this cursed being. If anything, you look more divine than deadly, and Sukuna thinks that perhaps your beauty could be your best weapon. You are bewitching, after all.
“I refuse to be your Queen and sit next to your throne.”
“Then why didn’t you stop the wedding?”
“I”
Sukuna’s teasing grin grows wider when you pull back, trying so hard to not trip over your words. It takes all of his self-restraint to not take you right then and there, but he does a good job of holding back, enjoying this view above him instead. “Could it be you’re attracted to me after all, hm, little one?”
“Do not test me, Curse. I’m more than capable of exorcising you myself.”
“Oh, I don’t doubt that. You’re the strongest in the Gojo clan, are you not?” he prompts to appease you, “I don’t even want to see what you’re capable of, but maybe, just maybe...” just as his eyes darken, the edges of his lips turning up into a smirk, Sukuna digs his claws into your thigh in a possessive show of ownership, a painful reminder that you’re his now. “...You could put on a little show for me?”
“I hate you!”
Experienced and strong as you are, you’re nothing compared to a thousand year old curse who’s killed a lot more people faster than you could blink. Sukuna immediately notices the animalistic way you draw your blade, arm swung back with rage written all over your face. Before you could so much as bat an eye, he easily switches the positions until you’re under him, using only one hand to pin your arms above your head, your blade effortlessly thrown to the other side of the room.
“As I thought, you’re a lot prettier under me like this,” he observes, roaming his eyes shamelessly over the fabric clinging prettily to your body. You’ve fallen silent at his unconcealed attention, your compliance enticing him to lean closer just to inhale your intoxicating scent.
“Not so feisty now, little one? Where’d all your hatred for me go?” Sukuna pulls back with widened eyes, “Oh? Am I hearing it wrong or is your pathetic human heart beating so loud right now?” You refuse to look at him, wriggling your hips in an attempt to leave, completely unaware that the mere movement is hypnotizing the curse above you. Sukuna grips your hips in warning, not wanting to destroy you – not now, anyway. “You know all you need to do is say it. I’d gladly take you right here and then.” His words spoken with that deep, throaty voice immediately sends a wave of heat down your core, but you turn away from him, breathing hard and nervously; something Sukuna picks up on in an instant. “Little one...have you never had a man hold you like this before?”
“N-no...”
“I see. Pure and innocent behind that ferocity, huh?” He surprises you by pulling away, smoothening his white robes down as he leaves you panting still on the floor. “Fine. I won’t touch you unless you ask me to.”
“I’d rather die before that ever comes out from my mouth.”
“We’ll see about that,” he smirks, winking at you before he shuts the door. “Little one.”
There’s a lot of weird – and utterly inconvenient things – about being Sukuna’s wife. The man eats everything, absolutely everything, and it doesn’t help that he sucks at hunting too. For a man so huge and burly, he sure is lazy, preferring to do the laundry in the riverside instead while you go out every day to prepare your meals.
You actually don’t mind, but it’s very fun to complain around him.
You’re on your way back to the temple when Sukuna grabs at you, making you drop the freshly caught birds onto the ground. Your brows furrow, about to scold him for being too eager again when Sukuna stares at your arm, his lips pressing into a thin line.
Following his line of sight, your lips form an ‘o’ shape. There’s blood trickling down your forearm from his claws accidentally cutting you, guilt written all over his face. Another weird thing about Sukuna is that he babbles a lot when he’s emotional, and you’re too tired to hear him beat himself over it that you just drag him inside your room, sitting his ass down before taking a clipper.
Sukuna scoffs when you start cutting his nails. It irks him that you don’t even bother wiping the blood off first and he tsks, eyes narrowed at you. “You should have thicker skin.”
You roll your eyes as you file his nails; you’ve been married to him long enough to know it’s his way of saying sorry. Not wanting to let him wallow in guilt any louder, you pad kisses over his knuckles before swiping the black ink off your desk, using a pen brush to colour your nails instead. Sukuna hovers behind you, head tilted to the side as he watched you. “Are you painting your nails black?” he utters in disbelief, trying to ignore the fact he feels...proud and even a little smug. “Not so fitting for the angelic sorcerer now, isn’t it?”
“I’m only doing this so you don’t feel left out.”
“Maybe I’ll add markings to your pretty face too,” he cups your jaw to make you turn to him, landing a solid kiss flat to your lips which makes you sigh, pretending to be annoyed but leaning over for another peck anyway. Sukuna laughs and pulls you onto his lap, kissing your neck this time around, a little annoyed that you don’t stop in brandishing your nails. “Wife, what do you think?”
“I have work, Sukuna. You flirting with me doesn’t change the fact I need to go.”
“Come home safe for me, at least?” he breathes down your neck, his touch sending shivers down your spine. You’ve definitely changed since the first time he’s met you, starting from a mean (although he stands strong that you are still mean to him sometimes) temperamental little one to a mature, stronger sorcerer who’s secretly weak for his wife.
Unable to resist him as always, you turn around once you’ve finished painting your nails, rubbing your nose over his until your strong, scary husband is turning into putty at your hands. “Of course I will,” you peck his lips one last time, Sukuna’s eyes closing as he dives in for a deeper kiss. “I’ll always come back home to my handsome husband.”
If anyone were to ask how it’s possible that the King of Curses is actually very soft for his sorcerer wife, everyone would claim it’s impossible and a heresy – but if you ask Sukuna, it’s probably just black magic doing its wonders.
“Kneel.”
Loki looks at them, these simple mortal beings. So primitive. Like ants, running loose, lost without a queen. But they needn’t fear any longer. Loki is here, and will be their leader now. They will find purpose - glorious purpose - under their rule.
“Kneel!” Loki says again, louder, and finally they fall into line. One after the next, down to their knees, to praise -
“Um. Excuse me. Uh, sorry. This is awkward.” A man steps away from the rest. He’s wearing a dreary brown suit with a tie that needs fixing. Gray hair. Mustache. A typical, everyday Midgardian.
Loki should silence him at once. And yet - they still their hand. There’s something oddly... compelling about this fumbling oaf. Perhaps it’s the way he’s looking at Loki. Not with fear, but with interest. Curiosity. Almost a quiet understanding.
No one ever looks at Loki like that.
The man rubs the back of his neck. “It’s just that. Well. I think I might be your soulmate?”
Someone in the crowd shushes him.
Another asks, “Are you crazy?”
A woman hisses, “Mobius. There’s no way -”
The man - Mobius - glances back at her and shrugs. “So they’re ambitious.”
“They’re going to kill you.”
“Nah.” Mobius turns back to Loki. “Just a little pussycat.”
He starts forward, gently moving through the kneeling crowd, whispering, “Excuse me, pardon me, coming through,” on his way to the front.
Loki tracks his every step, watchful for any sign of trickery, but they can detect no magic on this mortal. The absolute gall of this man, to approach Loki - child of Asgard, god of mischief - as if they are equals.
Loki shouldn’t just silence him, they should scorch him from the whole of the realms.
But then Mobius smiles at Loki, a big, wide thing that twists Loki up inside. Perhaps they will wait to destroy him, if only for a moment, if only to hear him out. Loki considers themself a fair god, after all.
Listening. Then destruction.
“Speak, mortal,” Loki commands. “If that is what you desire. But know your life hangs on your words.”
Mobius looks at Loki, watching for a moment, smile never dimming. “Oh, yeah. You’re definitely the one.”
“I am all things,” Loki says, ever magnanimous.
Mobius points at them. “You’re my soulmate.”
Loki frowns. “I am not.” Then they frown harder. They know lies well, and that felt like a big one.
But that couldn’t be.
“I have no soulmate,” Loki says, ignoring the familiar sting that comes with the words. Words repeated again and again, as all the seers in Asgard looked into their future and saw them standing alone.
Mobius’s smile softens. “Are you sure about that?”
No. Not really. How many years have passed since Loki last had the seers check? Is it possible... perhaps Mobius had been born in that time? He is but a mortal. How old could he be? 40 years? 50? The blink of an eye.
Mobius holds out a hand. “Wouldn’t you like to check?” That suit truly is ridiculous, outdated and well-worn. If they are soulmates, Loki will take him to Asgard at once and buy him -
Loki forces an abrupt stop to their own thoughts. This is deception, meant to shake them from their true purpose.
“Once I discover you are deceiving me, I will purge you from existence.”
“Okay, sure. Whatever you want.” Mobius waves his hand impatiently. “Isn’t worth trying? Then, you know, purge from existence and all that...”
“Mobius,” the same woman whisper-yells from the crowd.
Mobius rolls his eyes. “Work friend. She’s very protective.”
“She has reason to be,” Loki says, looking at that offered hand. At the long, steady fingers, the delicate wrist. Mortals are such fragile things. Beings to be conquered. Not loved.
And yet.
Loki lifts a hand. They rub their thumb and forefinger together. They will attempt a small touch for curiosity’s sake. Then, the promised destruction.
“Aren’t you afraid?” Loki asks.
“No. Excited, maybe. Not everyday you meet your soulmate.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I’m feeling confident.”
Loki swallows hard. Then they reach out. They don’t take Mobius’s hand, not fully. They merely brush the pad of one finger to the edge of his thumb.
It is enough.
Visions flood through their mind. Mobius laughing. Mobius taking Loki’s hand, pressing his lips to their knuckles, one after the next. Mobius leaning in and kissing them on their lips. Mobius pressing Loki against a wall, and Loki letting themself be pressed.
“I love you,” Mobius says under cover of darkness, in the light of day, out in the ocean on the back of some type of motorized water vehicle. “I love you,” again and again, filling the dark depths of Loki’s heart until it overflows, bursting with happiness. With immeasurable love.
Loki snaps back to the present and slowly, so slowly, withdraws their hand.
Mobius’s smile could light the whole city. “I knew it was you.”
Loki opens their mouth to speak, but what comes out is a gasped breath, very near a sob. The love from the vision has vanished, but the phantom feel of it has Loki wanting.
Deception. Has to be. But they are immune to enchantment. And there’s no magic on this man.
To be loved like that. To be held and... cherished. Even now, Mobius looks at them like they hold of all of his hopes and dreams. Loki wonders how they are looking back.
“It’s okay.” Mobius holds up both hands now, like placating a wounded animal. “I know it’s overwhelming.” Mobius takes a small step forward. Loki does too. Mobius is right there. A promise of a life Loki never thought they’d have - right there.
“Mobius,” Loki says, and the name is perfect on their tongue. They could say it a hundred times more, a thousand. They are desperate to. “Mobius.”
“I’m right here.” Mobius steps closer. Loki reaches and grabs his forearm, bunching a handful of that ugly sleeve into their fist. “I’ve got you.”
“You cannot imagine how long -”
“Step away from him,” comes a new, authoritative voice. This one, like Mobius, lacks fear, but unlike Mobius, is decidedly not Loki’s soulmate.
“We’re kind of in the middle of something,” Mobius says over his shoulder, to Captain America. “Could you give us a minute?”
Captain America does not give them a minute. “Release the citizen, Loki.”
“Wow, you are really misreading the situation,” Mobius says.
In the sky, a flying vehicle arms its weapons. Every nerve in Loki’s body stands on end, seeing Mobius in the way of it.
Loki yanks Mobius forward, closer to him, then behind him, shielding him with their body.
“Loki!” Mobius starts.
But its too late. Captain America is moving closer. Loki blocks some of his blows, misses a few others. He’s strong, but not on the level of a god. Not usually. But Loki keeps leaving themself open to protect the vulnerable mortal behind them. Loki doesn’t think Captain America would hurt Mobius, but the risk is too great. The cost is too high for Loki to guess wrong.
The sudden arrival of Tony Stark only makes matters more difficult.
When Loki raises their hands in defeat, Mobius storms around them.
“Mobius,” Loki says in alarm. Mobius is now in the way of far too many weapons. Does he not understand how fragile he is? Or how important?
“I got this, Loki,” Mobius tells them. To the others, “Now everybody hold on a minute.”
“Please move yourself to safety, citizen,” Captain America says.
“I’m perfectly safe right here.”
“Standing right there is how you get a knife in the back,” Tony Stark says.
“Loki won’t hurt me.”
“He must be brainwashed,” Captain America says.
Mobius huffs out a frustrated breath. “You aren’t listening. Loki is my soulmate.”
Tony Stark looks at Captain America. “Definitely brainwashed.” He clears his throat. “But I’ll bite. Who exactly are you?”
“Mobius M. Mobius.”
“Uh, huh. So your parents hated you,” Tony Stark says. Before Mobius can answer, Tony asks, “And what do you do, Mobius M. Mobius?”
“I’m a data analyst for a corporate conglomerate.”
“Right,” Tony Stark says. “Loki of Asgard forever bound to Mobius M. Mobius, the data analyst. Sounds fake, but okay.”
Mobius’s shoulders sink. “You don’t have to be rude about it.”
Annoyance flares hot under Loki’s skin. Mobius is perfect and how dare these simpletons insinuate otherwise. How dare they make him feel anything less than he is.
Loki takes a strong step forward, but Mobius catches sight of them first and places a hand on their chest, stilling them. Loki holds, only for Mobius’s sake.
“It’s no big deal,” Mobius says.
“They cannot speak to you like that. You are the soulmate of a god.”
“I’m not thrilled about it either. Data analysis is a respectable line of work. I’ve saved my company hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
Loki nods along, hoping they look impressed enough to spare Mobius’s feelings, when truly they have no idea what he is talking about. But whatever restores Mobius’s confidence is what they will do.
“Huh,” says Tony Stark. “Pencil pusher just stopped the god of mischief with a touch. You see that?”
“I saw it,” says Captain America. “I don’t think they’re lying.”
Mobius presses his lips together in a hard line before taking a breath and saying, “Loki, you have magic, right? Can you like...” He holds up his hands and waggles his fingers. “Magic us out of here. I think it’s getting a little crowded. Some conversations are supposed to be private.”
Loki likes the idea of... talking, but they had a plan when they came here today.
Loki looks at the scepter. At the people, no longer kneeling. At Captain America and Tony Stark, arguing about Mobius. And then, finally, they look at Mobius himself, with his calm, steady presence, ever-soft smile, and ill-fitting suit.
Loki meant to conquer all of Midgard. And this, being captured, was part of the plan. But. Perhaps. What’s waiting another day? Or two.
They very well can’t let Mobius be captured. To think of it, most of their plans might need changing now.
“Hold onto me,” Loki says.
“Happily.” Mobius goes easily into their arms.
And Loki holds tight as they magic away.
The Owl House Starters
Change as needed
“No! My only weakness! Dying!”
“That doesn’t count, right?”
“Do you have any friends? Real ones?”
“Tiny trash thief!”
“Oops, that happens sometimes.”
“I’m a squirmy little fella.”
“I like food, I like love, just let me write about it!”
“Oh, he gets so cute when he’s thirsty for power.”
“I’ve never actually broken any of your stupid laws… in front of you.”
“I hate everything you’re saying right now.”
“We’d be the strongest power couple ever.”
“Self-doubt is a prison you can never escape from.”
“Anyways, let’s bounce before any more monsters fall in love with me.”
“I am not your cutie pie!”
“No one wants an un-oiled snake.”
“Remember, never befriend a man in sandals and always measure twice, cut once.”
“Be back by nightfall or risk mortal peril!”
“I know I’ve had enough delight for one day.”
“Sorry to break it to you, ___, but no one here is that well-dressed.”
“This has been a rough day.”
“Big houses always belong to big whack jobs.”
“Today just got good.”
“Wizards are just old people with glitter in their pockets.”
“Anyways, your food is gone and we are too.”
“Never trust a man in casual drapery.”
“All that mean-spirited laughter made me sleepy.”
“I don’t like this. I really don’t like this.”
“All your food was so tiny and cute.”
“If you can think of a better plan I’d love to hear it.”
“Betrayed by my own cool accessories.”
“I didn’t have to be part of this!”
“I… don’t like this.”
“I think I’ll head home and look at pictures of animals that are still… alive.”
“Wow, you’re so unnoticeable I almost rolled into you.”
“It’s okay, the thorns only went through a few layers of skin.”
“Alright, into the darkness you go.”
“Oh my god, I haven’t eaten real food in so long please give me some.”
“You can’t just cut open a human, can you?”
“Keeping junk in my pocket saved my life!”
“Ahh, baby’s first wanted poster.”
“Even demons have inner demons.”
“This is my paying attention face.”
“Look, now we’re boo boo buddies.”
“It’s like a rainbow, but looking at it turns you inside out.”
“I respect your cunning but I also hate you for it.”
“Oh, gross. Can I keep that?”
“This is terrifying, so why do you look so happy?”
“Oh no, a twist!”
“I’m kind of over that nickname, but okay.”
“Oh, what lovely thing do we have here? It’s just so dang shiny, oh my.”
“And look, I drew flip book.”
“I will literally do anything to stop this.”
“If I’m seen, I could go to jail… again.”
“Alright, let’s see this mess.”
“That’s probably fine.”
“Time to prepare for bloodshed.”
“Welcome down to my level!”
“I know I should be repulsed but that look is fierce.”
“I’m gonna steal everything that’s not nailed down!”
“I was up all night poison tasting and, for some reason, I don’t feel great.”
“I need an extra pair of eyes looking out for pickpockets. And an extra pair of hands in case I want to pickpocket.”
“I got leaves in my pants. And I like it.”
“I was a strange child.”
“You think this can stop me? I can still bite your ankles.”
“If you’re gonna eat me, just do it now!”
“___, you’re getting all swoony again.”
“Rivals are meant to be annihilated, not befriended.”
“Witches eating babies is so 1693.”
“Ugh, you.”
“I thought we were as cool as cucumbers but we’re as sour as pickles.”
“Whoa, I almost passed out.”
“It’s been hours, how can it keep screaming!?”
“Say that again and I steal your tongue.”
“Keep going, this is fun to watch.”
“Isn’t that taking it a bit too far?”
“Just go away before things somehow get worse!”
“This never happened.”
“And who doesn’t like their name in lights?”
“That’s the incorrect reaction!”
“I smell an easy mark.”
“Well, I hate her.”
“It’s like demonic possession with the ones you love.”
“This is just like my favorite early 2000’s movie!”
“I’m so old… and pointy.”
“I’ve got some very confusing emotions right now.”
“My life’s not a joke! But yours is!”
“Novelty costumes are where I draw the line.”
“I am not above disrespecting my elders.”
“This vacation just took an alarming, back-alley turn.”
“Geez, I thought I’d like being babied. But I feel small and helpless, like some sort of baby.”
“Hey, take this, society!”
“I didn’t like her telling me what to do before, but now I love it!”
“Let’s go let out some teen angst!”
“This is how the cool kids ride. Super backwards, on purpose.”
“Your life is pretty terrible. But, hey, it’ll probably be over soon.”
“This is some of my best work, really captures the shame.”
“That’s sweet, kid. Now let’s never speak of this again.”
“Show, don’t tell, man.”
“Oh, look what you did. I’m gonna go rub it in.”
“That seems like a potential problem to me.”
“You being the razzle, I’ll bring the dazzle.”
“Do you always have confetti on you or—?”
“You’re just gonna be unhelpful, huh?”
“Okay, time to run for no particular reason!”
“Oof, I’ve had this nightmare before.”
“Like I’d actually apologize.”
“I want power, and I want drama.”
“Are you ready to give up?”
“I was afraid, I acted stupid.”
“I just wish you told me the truth.”
“You know, it didn’t taste as bad as I thought I would.”
“Impressive, still alive.”
“This is a throne worthy of a tyrant!”
“No, no, keep those sticky hands away.”
“No one wants to see that.”
“Since when are you into sports?”
“Gross, sympathy.”
“Don’t spend all night plotting revenge.”
“Oh, this is an interesting development.”
“I’ll take that weird grumble as a yes.”
“I’m feeling confident about this plan.”
“Trust must be earned.”
“If you run, you’ll just make it harder for yourself!”
“Your pride has destroyed you.”
“So tiny, so angry.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever be clean again.”
“If you ever want to search for the truth, I’ll help you.”
“Aww, that’s a horrible lie.”
“Partake of my free snack samples!”
“Why isn’t anyone paying attention to me?”
“A, eww. B, I’m bored. C, I feel like pickpocketing some dork while they browse.”
“I know my good angle.”
“Ugh, what are the basement dwellers doing out in natural sunlight?’
“Hey, there’s more to life than shipping.”
“___, I know you’re trying to help, but I think you’re crossing a line.”
“Ooh, I love punching.”
“You’re ominous, and I like it.”
“And of course you would be here just to be a nuisance.”
“I wanted to compare sunglasses.”
“Fame can really box you in, you know?”
“Besides, if anyone’s putting you down it’s gonna be me.”
“If it’s disappointing in any way I’ll spend the rest of my life trashing it.”
“He scammed us. Can you believe he scammed us?”
“Good entrance. But that outfit? Hah!”
“I’ve got a new crush and her name is education!”
“Ahh, fresh garbage.”
“I have never seen such an extravagant earring.”
“Wow, a surprisingly peaceful domestic moment. When will it be ruined?”
“Weaponizing my pride, well played.”
“Sorry, whoever’s over there!”
“Well, go on. Eat the snow.”
“Huh, it’s no fun if they don’t tremble.”
“Oh, okay, alright. Yup, an idea’s happening.”
“Shh! I don’t need your validation!”
“Get back here before that thing bites you!”
“No, we’re gonna die.”
“Cool. I didn’t actually think you could do it.”
“It’s not a secret.”
“Alright, your adorable banter is literally making me sick.”
“Believe it or not, I’ve seen worse.”
“Aww. I won’t be doing that, but thanks.”
“Quitting: it’s like trying, but easier.”
“You humans are filled with liquids, right?”
“I guess I have always liked pouring things into other things.”
“Time to scrounge through the trash.”
“I ain’t no desk jockey.”
“You don’t know diddly dang about squiddly squat!”
“I love secret rooms!”
“You have an aura of lies.”
“Also, you can eat trash.”
“Do the right thing, you dingus!”
“It just goes on like this for an hour.”
“Carnivals bring crowds and crowds bring suckers.”
“We’ve got scams to run.”
“I know poison when I see it.”
“You can’t scam a scammer.”
“You should really put a lock on your closet.”
“I love crimes!”
“Now this is my kind of weird.”
“That’s way safer than becoming blood brothers.”
“Beat up the man and steal his things for me.”
“This mama is ready for trauma.”
“All right. Approval!”
“Curse these stubby legs!”
“Sketchy carnival rides are not to blame this time.”
“___, you’re lucky I can’t be mad at your adorable antics.”
“Just when I thought I couldn’t respect the law any less…”
“Aww, what a supportive sign.”
“Yep, I just counted to one million.”
“Looks like we ruined his life for a second time.”
“I’ve always wanted to own a jagged piece of cheap metal.”
“Yes! Bread puns, bread puns forever!”
“Now I know what friendship tastes like.”
“I think today is a talons day.”
“It’s fun because it’s stupid.”
“I’ll admit, I was adorable.”
“Be careful with my brain.”
“Wouldn’t you rather talk about it?”
“That’s my motto after all, ‘Out of sight, out of mind.’”
“No schemes, no plots, no ruses. None.”
“I can’t believe I made him cry.”
“Are you solving a crime or about to commit one?”
“Sadly this is one problem crime can’t solve.”
“I’m supposed to choose someone interesting, accomplished, and noteworthy. People aren’t meant to be all those things!”
“Yup, her brain’s burned up real good.”
“Be still my fantasy-loving heart.”
“I’m pretty good at getting stuck inside people’s heads.”
“Hey, I found something magical.”
“I’ma put my face in it.”
“It’s like a little doghouse for angels.”
“If you’re handing out attention, I deserve it.”
“Eww, I mean, aww.”
“I really messed things up.”
“It’s eggs, it’s full of eggs.”
“No one turns down an interview with someone this pretty.”
“Me? Avoid? What? No. But let’s skip it.”
“There’s levels to me, kid. Levels I say!”
“Oh, right, I put people in there.”
“I’m gonna hug you so hard you’ll never forget me again!”
“I regret teaching you about the internet.”
“Ah, a severed hand. Perfect response.”
“Hmm, the demon at my shoulder makes a good point.”
“Always trust a shoulder demon.”
“The more I look at him, the more uncomfortable I get.”
“Man, you’ve got some quick grabbers.”
“I can’t wait to get overdressed, take awkward photos, push all the buttons!”
“We’re gonna turn this bloodbath into a fun bath.”
“Do you think I could pull off red eyeshadow?”
“Girl, you could pull off anything.”
“We’re style geniuses!”
“Ominous footsteps, creepy woods, this is no problem.”
“Dang, I look great.”
“___, you always go overboard and I end up bailing you out.”
“Now, what’s the fun in watching a kid get eaten by a monster if it’s my kid?”
“___, I don’t think you’re ready but we’re literally out of time.”
“Why so twitchy, witchy?”
“Teenagers are brutal. They’ll boo anyone and that kind of public humiliation will stick with you for life.”
“You look nice. Strange, but nice.”
“Honestly, I’m kind of amazed with how fearless you are.”
“You’ve done things I could never do.”
“Thing is, you’re sitting in my personal chitchat zone, which means you gotta talk.”
“I am a little weirdo.”
“You gotta pander.”
“Cheating a isn’t anything to brag about.”
“Well, can’t reason with crazy!”
“I’ve been talking for too long.”
“Feeling sentimental?”
“I love water.”
“I don’t know much about sports but I do know about sports movies.”
“What happens in the montage stays in the montage.”
“Not everything can be solved with a good attitude and a dope movie soundtrack.”
“Sorry, I just really love backstories.”
“You just destroyed your social life.”
“That’s such a stupid rule!”
“You’re not gonna show this to anyone, right?”
“I haven’t forgotten what you promised me.”
“Ahh, you’re a thorn in my side but you always dig your way into my heart.”
“Jeez, you’re morbid.”
“Ahh, it’s a fate much worse than death if you think about it.”
“Please don’t make me regret taking you here.”
“Love me a properly ventilated castle.”
“I spy with my little eye something coming this way!”
“I’m going away and I don’t know if I can come back this time.”
“And ___, thank you, for being in my life.”
“I want her back as much as you do.”
“Don’t look at me like that, this is for your own good.”
“Ah farts, I got caught.”
“You understand, don’t you?”
“Please tell me that’s not as bad as it sounds.”
“To be great, you have to make sacrifices.”
“Ahh, ___, you chose the wrong side.”
“I like your spirit, but try that again and things won’t end well for you.”
“Go on, then. Go be a hero.”
“I may have lost but so have you.”
“I can teach you what I know, and what we don’t know we can learn together.”
Diabolik Lovers DARK FATE ー Ayato [VAMPIRE ENDING]
Monologue
ーー Screams echo through the castle halls.
No, not just inside the castle either.
When we stepped outside,
I realized those sounds were coming from all across the Demon World.
The final thing,
Karlheinz-san left behind...
It was a new world,
where a newborn species would live.
This world does not need demons nor humans.
Therefore, he will end them.
My body would not stop shaking.
However, I managed to keep going,
because Ayato-kun was there besides me.
His kindness transmitted through our connected hands,
is what pulled me back,
right before I got swallowed by the dark pits of despairーー
Male Vampire A: Gyaaaah!
Female Vampire A: No...Nooooooo!!
ー The scene shifts to the burning forest
Yui: Oh no...!! This is horrible...!!
Ayato: Is this...Is this the world he wished for?
All for this sake...!
New race, my ass. Fuck all of this...
Yui: Ayato-kun...
???: Ayato-kun! Bitch-chan!!
Ayato: ...!?
Yui: ( This voiceーー )
ー The other Sakamaki’s approach them
Ayato: You guys...
...Look at that. Still refusin’ to die, huh?
Laito: Nfu~ Of course we’re alive.
Kanato: I actually agree with Laito for once. We are not that weak to be done in by a few flames.
Ayato: Heh...Guess that’s true.
Yui: ( Thank god...I’m so glad to see everyone alive...! )
Reiji: More importantly...What is going on? The evening gala’s entire venue has gone up in flames.
Subaru: Che...There’s piles of corpses everywhere you look.
Yui: ( No way... )
Reiji: So? Where is Father? We must update him on the status quo.
Ayato: That...won’t be necessary.
Reiji: ...What do you mean?
Ayato: He died.
Reiji: ...
Shuu: ...Died?
Ayato: Yeah.
Reiji: This is not the time to joke around...
There is no way that man would die.
Ayato: It’s not a joke. He’s no longer around.
...And it was exactly what he wished for.
Reiji: ...
Ayato: Also...Kanato, Laito.
Kanato: Yes?
Ayato: Mom died as well.
Kanato: ...
Laito: ...I see...Okay...
???: That man...has passed away...?
ー The Mukami’s appear
Ruki: In that case...Sakamaki Ayato. Does that mean...You are Adam?
Yui: ( ...Did the Mukami’s know about this as well, perhaps...? )
Azusa: Eve...Ayato-san turned out...to be your Adam, huh...?
Kou: ...We...
Yuma: ...Ugh.
Reiji: Adam? What exactly are you talking about? Explain this at once!!
Yui: Wellーー
Monologue
In the following minutes,
we told them everything which had happened up till now.
Including the full details,
on the plan their Father - Karlheinz-san - wished for.
And thenーー
Reiji: ...Unbelievable...You claim that was Father’s wish...?
Ruki: And Adam and Eve were born right now...
Ayato: Adam? Eve? My ass!
I’m Yours Truly and Chichinashi is Chichinashi! Simple as that.
Shuu: ...Sounds like something you would say...
And? What are we going to do now? We can’t just sit around and do nothing forever, can we?
Ruki: We’re returning to the human world. Then I can think, about my path in life...
Kou: You mean ‘ours’, right?
Yuma: Exactly. Don’t talk as if you’re all by yerself now.
Ruki: ...You guys...
Azusa: ...Ruki...It’s just like they said. We’re brothers, remember?
Ruki: ...Yeah, you’re right.
There you have it...So long.
ー The Mukami’s leave
Yui: ( ...Guys... )
Ayato: They left...
Shuu: They sure did...I mean, it fits them so I see no problem? Pwaah...
ーー So, Ayato. What’s your plan?
Ayato: Well...
Yui: ( Right, we can’t stay stuck in place forever either. )
( We have to think about the future. )
Ayato: ...
I’ll stay here. With Yui by my side as well.
Yui: Ayato-kun...
Laito: Look at you talk, Ayato-kun! I’m impressed!
Kanato: ...Well, I suppose that’s fine. However, as you can see, Eden has been completely destroyed.
Ayato: ...Hehe. Oi oi, who do you think I am?
Don’t underestimate the Great Ayato-sama!
*WOOSH*
Yui: ( Ah...! Eden has stopped crumbling apart...? )
Reiji: ...I see.
If Father’s magic is what caused this destruction, then I suppose you can use your newly earned powers to stop it...?
Ayato: Haah, haah...I could have done this much with ease even without that jerk’s powers!
Subaru: ...I wonder...
Ayato: Aah!? What didya say!?
Reiji: Good grief...We just went through all of that, and look at you guys going at it again...
Yui: ( Reiji-san may say that but...I’m happy to have met up with everyone and be able to talk to them like this... )
Ayato: ...Tsk. ...Oi! Chichinashi!
Yui: Y-Yes!?
Ayato: Why do you look so relieved? Now that everything’s settled, you gotta get ready!
Women love that sorta stuff but they always take forever, don’t they?
Yui: Eh?
Ayato: Haah? You really don’t get it at all, do you?
Laito: Nfu~ You’re so dense, Bitch-chan.
It’s a little broken down, but when a guy asks you to live together in a castle like Eden...
There’s only one thing that could imply, right?
Yui: ...Um...
Ayato: Aah, god! You know...
ーー I obviously mean we have to get everythin’ ready for the wedding ceremony!
Yui: ...!
The two of us will...?
Ayato: Y-Yeah! I’ll make an exception for you. Only ‘cause I’ve got no other choice though!
Laito: ...Looks like someone can’t be honest with himself.
Ayato: Aah!? Excuse me!?
Laito: Oh, nothing~! Nfu~!
Yui: ( Ayato-kun and I will... )
( Oh no, this feels like a dream... )
Shuu: ...I mean, suit yourself.
Subaru: I don’t mind if that means less trouble for us.
Reiji: If you do not burden me, then please be my guest.
But, well...Since I am the only person here with some common sense, allow me to say one thing.
ーー Congratulations.
Yui: ( Reiji-san... )
Ayato: I decided I’m gonna do this shit so l will, regardless of what you guys say!
Ah, right. I guess I wouldn’t mind employin’ you guys as my servants at the castle?
Reiji: I kindly refuse. Haah...I am leaving now.
Ayato: Aah? Where exactly?
Reiji: Does that matter?
Honestly...Any place will do.
Father is no longer around. In that case, I see no reason for me to stay here.
ー Reiji leaves
Ayato: That’s why I asked wheーー
Subaru: I’m dippin’ as well.
I didn’t exactly live with you guys out of my own free will anyway. See you.
ー Subaru leaves as well
Shuu: I’ll go too then...Pwaah...Guess I’ll finally get some peace and quiet...
ー Shuu follows suit
Yui: ( They all left. Which leaves... )
Ayato: What ‘bout you two?
Laito: Hmー Let me think. I guess I could stick around.
There’s so much fun to be had with a newlywed couple, don’t you think~? Right, Kanato-kun?
Kanato: I’m afraid I can’t agree. I’m leaving as well.
ー Kanato leaves
Laito: Eehー Boring! Oh well...I guess it can’t be helped this time.
See you~! Ah! Send me an invitation to the ceremony, okay~?
ー Laito follows after Kanato
Yui: Ah...
...They all left.
Ayato: Hmph! A huge weight lifted off my shoulders, honestly!
Now it’s finally just the two of uー Woah.
...
...Come on, let’s go.
Yui: Y-Yeah...!
ー Ayato steps closer
*Smooch*
Ayato: ...Nn...
Yui: Wha...!?
Ayato: Guess I’ll kiss you before that at least.
Yui: ...B-Before? You already did, Ayato-kun...
Ayato: Shush!
Well, I guess kisses aren’t half bad.
Okay! Now we’re headed off for real.
Yui: Yeah...!
Monologue
Ayato-kun pulled me by my hand,
as I once again faced Eden.
This place is currently in ruins.
However, in my eyes,
it looked more beautiful than anything.
I wonder why?
That question immediately disappeared from my mind.
The answer,
more than anything, or anyone,
was right next to me after allーー
Ayato: ーー Oi, why are you takin’ forever?
Come here already.
On certain CGs, little black roses will appear on the screen. If you click on them, you get an extra line of dialogue.
“I won’t let you go, no matter what happens. You better don’t take my love lightly.”
“I hope you made up your resolve when choosin’ me, Chichinashi? ...’Cause you’re mine forever now.”
Yui: ( Aah...What a peaceful day. )
( I’m so glad...Our ceremony is today. )
Ayato: Oi, whatcha thinkin’ ‘bout? Did you have other stuff on your mind when I’m here right in front of you?
Geez, I can never leave my guard down with you.
Yui: Fufu...Sorry...
Ayato: Hmph...
...Anyway...
Those guys just filled their belly and went on their merry ways afterwards. Same goes for those darn Mukami’s.
Who knows what those dudes have been up to this whole time, but for these occasions, they all show up all of a sudden.
Well, I guess it makes sense for them to show up, seein’ as I’m basically the King here now.
Yui: ( I wonder if I’m the only one...Who believes they’re actually looking out for us? )
Ayato: Oi, let me tell you, just in case.
Yui: Yes?
Ayato: I’m not with you ‘cause that’s part of his stupid plan.
Yui: Ayato-kun...
Ayato: I don’t give a damn ‘bout becomin’ the ‘saviors’ he talked of.
The Demon World’s a hot mess. But...
You’re right here in front of me.
That’s why I want to touch you. Want to embrace you.
Don’t want to let you go. Want you by my side...
In short, um...How do I say this...?
...
Aah, right!
ーー I love you, Yui.
...I love you...
No matter what becomes of the world, let’s be together.
That’s simply how I feel.
Yui: ( ...Ayato-kun... )
( I love you too. )
( From here on out, I’ll only ever trust you...and continue to love you. )
( Together...Forever... )
ーー THE END ーー
(Twst Anni!) Oneshot form please! I know I can choose up tot wi characters, but in this case, I’m just gonna choose one for Vil (i cant think of any other lines that appealed to me): “Beautiful flowers are poisonous. But isn’t that just another one of their charms?”
╰──➢ “Beautiful flowers are poisonous. But isn’t that just another one of their charms?”
❥ ara ara you geared something in my brain. may our waiter, vil schoenheit, treat you with this anniversary special dessert!
Another hit bashed his sides as he fell to the ground. No pain did adhere to his figure yet the disappointment of failing yet another training session made him scowl to himself. His foil was thrown across the room in a sign of defeat. His father sighed while you kept yourself sitting on the chair in worry. “Vil,” his father began, helping his son up and continuing, “It’s time for you to rest. You’ve done enough for today.”
“I want to continue, papa,” came his struggling grunts while he stood up. Patting down the dust on his pants, he walked to pick up his foil. However, his papa prevented him from going any further with a tight grip on his wrist. “I said, that’s enough.”
“But I’m not tired--”
You wanted to run and comfort the boy -- your best friend. His father had already removed his fencing mask off of him. “Vil. You need to rest. You’re already frustrated enough to continue.”
Mr. Schoenheit’s eyes glanced at you, nodding his head over at his son while his hand laid at the small of his back. Vil’s face was cast down, hands balled into fists with teeth gritted in frustration. You looked at the older man and quickly set your feet down on the floor and ran over to your friend.
“Let’s go outside, Vil. The sun can calm you down."
Vil looked at you in the eyes, his expression not even fading — gazing down at your hands holding his. He doesn't know what he’s feeling but immense frustration. Towards who? Himself. He brought you to his home to show you how much progress he did with fencing and yet he just wiped the floor with his failure. The shame of failing his own ability. How did he word his statement again?
“Come to my house! I’ll show you how much stronger I got with fencing!”
Stronger, huh.
“I’ll make you something to drink.” Mr. Schoenheit placed a hand on his son’s head, “You go outside with y/n. It will help you greatly.”
Now both of you sat at the porch of his home, listening to the white noises his little village made whilst drinking some nutritious smoothie. It was quiet between the two of you. No awkwardness, no uncomfortability, just feeling the presence of one another. You gazed at Vil, his blonde locks covering his face yet you could see how he stared at the pavement below him. His lips remain locked around the straw as you watch him subconsciously swallow down his smoothie.
“Vil?” you called.
“Hm?” he responded yet his eyes never left where they desire to look.
Your mouth ran dry; what did you want to say to him? Think, y/n. How can you emotionally support your friend who was disappointed? “You did great back there.”
Really, y/n?
“You’re only saying that to make me feel better,” he exhaled, taking his time to finally glance at you. His glass is now empty and yours still half full. You tripped on your words, scratching the back of your nape. “I didn’t do well. I know that. I just need to try harder.”
“But you really did better. It’s okay to fail, you know. You’re still ten years old.”
“You speak as if you’re any older than me. I’m fine, y/n.”
“You don’t look like it.” You placed your glass on the steps beside you and scooted closer to Vil. “You’re stubborn, you know that. I saw how you wanted to cry back inside and yet you didn’t let yourself. If you want to cry now, then I have a shoulder for you to cry on!”
Vil shook his head in denial, twirling his straw as he looked away. “I don’t like showing signs of weakness. You’re being ridiculous.”
“Sheesh.” You gave up, huffing in defeat while you slurped on your smoothie. You know it’s useless to get into Vil’s head. When he’s determined to do something, you know he wants it to happen. Despite seeming weak already, he wants to stay strong. How poisonous. Even you wanted to keep on going through his head.
You already saw his success by being a child influencer. You were there -- or at least try to be present -- during his stage plays. His movies? Oh, Vil would use his dad’s phone just to contact you and how everything is going. What else does he want? Surely, he would tell you about this and that and how the world of media is different from his little village in his homeland. He failed just ONE round of fencing and now he’s sulking.
Why won’t he tell you his objective this time?
He could beat you in fencing himself. Even his dad would wince every time Vil would attempt to playfully punch his arm. He’s that strong already. What else, Vil. What else do you want?
You wish to know the answer eight years later.
You sat in Pomefiore’s lounge, the leg over your other, swinging in boredom as you scanned through endless magicam content. Epel was so close to looking like a pile of hay with his hands tugging on his hair countless times. Looking at your junior, you sighed and placed your phone down. “Magical pharmaceuticals? That’s Iodine. It can be used to revive dead plants. Wait, why are you studying this? This is for second-years.”
“I wanna prove something to Vil-- I mean, my senior…” he admitted laying his head on his arms in distress. “He said the first step into being stronger is to be smart. So I...well..borrowed some books from other second-years.”
“Be smart? I don’t think Vil would say something like that…” you said.
“I ‘on’t know! I didn’t understand a single w’rd he said s-so I assumed that!” he burst out as he sat back with a scowl on his face. You sighed, scooting closer to the boy and wrapping an arm around his shoulder. Just across the room where the both of you sat were Vil and Rook. You can’t hear what they’re talking about yet you could see how focused they both were as they communicated with another third-year.
“Epel, you know…” you began, rubbing his arm in a comforting way, “Whatever Vil told you, he just wants you to do well.”
“But ‘e’s too harsh!”
“Not everything is going to be easy and Vil just wants to see you work hard. You wouldn’t be able to carry that interviewer’s luggage if it wasn’t for him working out your arms right? He just finds a way to gear you up.”
“He succeeded alright…” he mumbled, following your gaze over to his senior. As he looked at Vil, he remembered how he turned down his magic wheel design in order to bring out his full potential in creativeness. Admittedly, he often misunderstands Vil’s words into something much cruel but people learn from mistakes, right?
With a deep inhale, Epel stood up and collected the books. “Alright! I’ll prove to Vil that I’m gonna be the best. Someday, I’ll… I’ll…”
“Think about it Epel. You still have a long way to go.”
“Ahhh…” he moaned and nodded. “I’ll be back! I still have some flowers to pick for the experiment! See you, y/n!”
You waved at the departing boy. Adorable. No small body can hold such a big ambition. And just what was still the answer to your question about Vil? What does he want?
“That boy,” you heard the dorm leader sigh as he and Rook walked closer. The latter chuckling to himself as he sat beside you. “He complained again, didn’t he?” he questioned. Nodding as a response, you laid your head on the arm of the couch as Vil eyed you.
“He misunderstood me again, no?”
“He understood afterward. No biggie,” you grinned.
“Either way, you conveyed my message--” He moved his hand, swatting the air in a sign of disregard, “But that won’t be the last time I’ll persuade him to do better.”
“We know,” You and Rook simultaneously spoke. You mentioned how Vil could even tolerate Epel’s attitude and how immune he is to his personality. You remembered how both yourself and Mr. Schoneheit are immune to Vil’s determination and non stop hard work. Is there a difference? Maybe there is, maybe none. That’s a Pomefiore student after all.
No harsh or rude words can knock them down. Determined? Hah! That’s a battle with oneself against the world. How poisonous would a flower be if its beauty and ability are showcased to everyone. Nothing can destroy something so elegant yet powerful when they are their own poison. Being poisonous is something to brag about.
“He’s cute but he’s the first student in Pomefiore that can fight you Vil.”
The young man laughed to himself, smirking your way in delight. “That’s a challenge I am looking forward to. After all, beautiful flowers are poisonous. But isn’t that just another one of their charms?”
Say My Name and I’ll Be There: 9.1
Author’s Note: Short chapter. My anxiety has gotten really bad and I’m busy so I could use some virtual hugs haha
"You dared to deceive an archon?"
The bellow hung heavy in the morning air, but Childe didn't flinch. "Oh? If my memory serves me correctly, you were all for my plan." A slight excitement rushed within his chest at the thought of the possibility of fighting an archon today. The joy he would feel! To have the privilege of testing his strength against a former god--
"Don't play games with me," Zhongli growled, his infuriated gaze sliding to the brat that was more than amused at his ill-composed state. Archons, the consultant was trying so hard not to summon a meteor this instant--something his past self would've done without a moment of hesitation. "You nearly--"
"I never claimed to be one of the good guys, sensei."
Zhongli bit the inside of his lip until he drew blood and his eyes glowed a threatening yellow that was far too similar to the Exuvia. He so desperately wanted to run Childe into the ground, to pummel him with the same spears that defeated Osial himself. To do so would mean the complete and utter destruction of the harbor that sat below them, as they were on the hill behind the Liyue Qixing's headquarters. The sun beat down on them harshly as if to mirror Zhongli's rage.
"I have my own agenda to fulfill, in the end." Something somewhat apologetic flashed in the harbinger's eyes before he looked out to the vast sea, still unflinching from Zhongli's threatening aura.
"You have broken a contract. A breach in trust. Do you know what this means for you?" I'll end him right here. As a cost for the Tsaritsa to pay for breaching--No. Zhongli took a deep breath to quell the raging tides of fury that swirled in his being. No. The Tsaritsa broke no contract. I willingly gave Xiao after being played like a fool by Childe. That's right. Anger consumes all rational thought; Zhongli could not allow himself to make the same mistakes. To do so would surely destroy any concept of safety for you and Xiao.
"I will fight to the death if you see it fit, Mr. Zhongli." The corner of his lips curled slightly upwards after hearing the anger in the consultant's voice, but they downturned again as he turned to face the man. "But, as I see it, I have learned from that...experience in Fontaine."
Zhongli's hard gaze remained unwavering as stone.
"Mezzetin..." Childe returned to his view of the ocean. "...has been in too dark of a place as of late. I had deceived you in an effort to protect her from your yaksha; his presence seemed to have too negative of an impact on her. So I thought, for her benefit, I would recruit her into the Fatui for her own safety. From Xiao, and from the unrelenting forces of Snezhnaya. She wouldn't have to live in fear of us as long as she was with us.
"But then another side effect showed up and I realized I had made a mistake for deceiving you, Mr. Zhongli. I was mistaken to think that the yaksha was the problem instead of the distance between the pair. That, dear sensei, is why I brought her here for the Lantern Rite."
While he's speaking from the heart, he is still being untruthful. The archon stood unmoving, rage reigniting a little until a memory of Guizhong flashed in his mind. He wouldn't bring her to Liyue without another motive.
"I'm speaking honestly, Mr. Zhongli." Childe didn't even hold his signature smile across his lips; he was dead serious. "While this excursion most definitely benefits the Tsaritsa, I only brought Mezzetin for her own wellbeing."
Zhongli still wasn't buying it, and he approached Childe until he was at his ear. His low voice had to have dropped an octave lower while he maintained his composed but threatening demeanor. "The next time you cross me or seek to harm those in our group, you will join Osial below Guyun Stone Forest."
The threat was enough to send a slight chill down Childe's spine, as reluctant as he would admit it, but the harbinger grinned darkly nonetheless. After all, how could a measly chill overpower the thrill of battle he always got? It egged him on, but...he did consider Zhongli a comrade more than a means to an end for the Tsaritsa. One that he didn't want to lose, even if he was still pissed that the consultant had deceived him for being a human and not the Lord of Geo.
The archon began to brush past Childe, when the harbinger gripped his shoulder to keep him in place. "Mark my words, Mr. Zhongli. When the time comes, you will be relying on me once more."
What? Zhongli rotated his head, but Childe had already let go of his shoulder and started to walk off. He would've perceived the statement as the threat that it was, if it weren't for the different fluctuations in Childe's voice. Was that melancholy he sensed? Guilt? Uncertainty? Zhongli narrowed his eyes as he watched the harbinger scale off the mountain with his glider.
Perhaps that was enough to get through to him, Childe thought to himself without peering over his shoulder. He didn't dare say too much. The Tsaritsa will get what she needs for her war; what's it to her if he moves a few chess pieces across the board himself? This is the only time he would ever allow to make such a daring exception. As long as you and Aether didn't try to intervene down the line, then maybe he could bring you freedom...
That was a cry for help, Zhongli found himself dumb-founded. Childe's figure was now a spec in the distance and near touchdown in the plaza.
.......................
"Will you two cut it out already?!" You had thought that the subject had long passed, but apparently Aether had no mercy teasing you as he had always teased Paimon. "We didn't do anything! How many times do I have to say that?" You drew a deep breath to keep up with your mouth. "Or do I have to whack it into you?!"
"Hm, dunno, Paimon thinks denial is even more suspicious than silence!"
"Ugh, why did you have to go and say we 'slept together...'" Your head dropped into your hands in an exasperated manner, eyebrows furrowing together with the threat of an impending headache.
"Mortals make too large of a fuss over such trivial matters. It was really nothing," Xiao scoffed at the traveler and the weird floating thing he still couldn't figure out. It was then that he remembered your odd behavior in bed this morning, and how you were exhibiting the same redness now. "Though...I do have a few questions. Why do humans flush red at the most random of times?"
"EH?!" Your hand instinctually flew to his mouth, nearly covering up--except the yaksha caught your wrist before you had the chance to prevent him from saying anything else that could be perceived the wrong way. "What are you--?! Just stop talking!"
"Like now," Xiao noted aloud, completely oblivious to the dumb-founded shock--or what could've been exasperated horror--on Aether's and Paimon's faces.
"Think of it as a defense mechanism," Childe approached the group, completely lacking the tension from earlier. "Or as an indicator for lying."
"'Lying?'" Xiao looked unconvinced as his eyes met yours. You definitely didn't flush red when lying.
"Well, in some settings," Childe let out a chuckle before plopping his hand atop your head. It wouldn't be inaccurate to think that Xiao nearly summoned his weapon and thought of slicing his hand off right then and there. "Are you ready to go?"
"Go? But you said tomorrow." Lips pursed into an irritated pout as you turned to face him, nonchalantly pushing his hand off of you in the process. "And Zhongli said something about a possible del-"
"The matter is settled." Was it just you, or was his smile a little strained?
"And if we don't let you take her back?" Aether stepped forward. A few pedestrians glanced his way while passing the group.
"Oh? Is this your way of asking me for a fight? I'd be happy to humor you."
"You can't take all three of us at once," the boy took another step forward, this time lowering his stance as if he were ready to lunge at the harbinger. Paimon egged him on.
"Will you two stop with this macho contest?" Your growl seemed to snap them out of it. "No one is fighting. I left with the harbingers to prevent that from happening."
"If the lady insists." Child winked at Aether, who scoffed in turn. Then he faced you once more. "As for the sudden change in our depart, I simply changed my mind. Meet at the Northland Bank. You have one hour."
.....................
"One hour?!?!" You were still fuming over the smug smile that had tugged at the corner of Childe's lips after the three of you parted from him. "What...What am I supposed to do in an hour?! I swear I'm gonna--"
"Paimon thinks we should take him out now!"
"Why are you so bloodthirsty when it comes to Childe?" Aether reminded her to keep her voice down, suddenly conscious of the stares you were all getting.
"Why aren't you? He's lied to us, hurt us, and now he's hurting our friends! Paimon simply can't accept that!"
Aether had long since tuned Paimon's voice out and was focused on you and Xiao instead. The lack of eye contact between the two of you made it blatantly obvious there were some things to discuss privately. "We'll let you have some alone time."
"Huh? Why're you leaving?" You spun on your heel with a confused expression, whirling to a stop once you faced the boy. "Shouldn't we all be together before I--"
"You'd rather not be alone with your boyfriend before you leave?" A confused, innocent tilt of the head sent you into another wave of embarrassment.
"B-boyfriend?!"
"Hold up! You're telling Paimon you're embarrassed by THAT even though you two--"
"Boy...friend...?" Xiao's face twisted in clear disgust as if he had eaten something sour, the words being carefully sounded out. You were his companion. What is this 'boy friend' term being flung around all of a sudden? "I've lived for a millennia and you dare refer to me as a child? Have you no respect for the adepti?"
"U-um!" Your stammer caught the attention of his narrowed eyes, and his gaze softened slightly. "Just ignore them. It's not a bad term or anything of the sort," you sent a pleading glance Aether's way so he wouldn't reveal the meaning of the word. Boyfriend...ah, I guess he is now...! Despite your heated cheeks, a flutter of excitement pressed against your chest at the thought and you broke eye contact with the yaksha.
"Yeah, you two need to talk about that," Aether laughed before turning serious. "Be careful. If you need help, Xiao can hear you, right? You just need to pray to him and--"
You nodded, "I know," and gifted him with a grim smile. "Don't worry about me. Focus on finding your sister. I'll figure out a way to deal with the Tsaritsa sooner or later." You pulled him into a tight hug, yanking Paimon out of the air to envelope her in one too. "I'll come back."
"That better be a promise you won't break."
"I swear it on my Granny's grave." The three of you released one another and stepped back. You waved them goodbye as they ran in the direction of the funeral parlor before turning to Xiao. "So..."
Xiao crossed his arms and shifted his weight onto his other foot, closing his eyes in a somewhat pensive manner. "Is there anything you wanted to do before you leave?"
White Tulips - Cut Chapter
Hey Everyone. I hope who ever reads this is happy and healthy. So I wrote this idea for my Han Seojun x Kang Sujin fanfic but it didn’t really fit the story at the time, even though I had set it up in the published story twice, so I cut it. But I still loved this idea so I wanted to share it here.
I would have shared it earlier but I was trying to get the Joseon Era AU started before that but man, have I been struggling with that story. Writing historic fanfic is HARD! Anyway I still wanted to leave this here. Hope you all like it.
Pairing: Kang Sujin x Han Seojun
Word Count: 1.7k
Rating: Slightly Mature... or maybe PG 15? I dunno. I am bad with ratings
For all of his flaws, Han Seojun had one thing going for him. He was unashamed. Unashamed of his slight lack of academic intelligence, unashamed of his troublemaker persona, and definitely unashamed of losing to Kang Sujin at everything imaginable.
“Ah-nee, how could you get so good at basketball?” He panted, pulling up his shirt to wipe his brow, not because he was sweaty, but because he wanted Sujin to stare at his abs.
“I was always good, Han Seojun.” Sujin said proudly, holding the basketball by her waist as she unabashedly eyed his abs. “I told you, I was just off my game that day.”
“You were distracted by my face.” Seojun smirked.
“Of course, I was. I had a massive crush on you.” She grinned, kissing him.
“Ooooh, chagi, you had a crush on meee.” Seojun teased like a school boy who had discovered her most embarrassing secret.
“We’re practically married.” Sujin pointed out dryly, the fact that they had been together for over a year now.
“Still.” Seojun grinned.
“Doesn’t change the fact that I finally did beat you.” Sujin countered.
Seojun didn’t tell her that he had let her win today. Her loved her competitiveness and the giddy way she grinned when she won. If Seojun could, he would let her win everything her heart desired. But this he would never tell her, mostly because she would kill him. And Seojun really wanted to live, especially now that he had someone else to live with.
“Technically, we’re at a draw. You only cancelled out your win from back then.” He stated. The two had started packing their things. Sujin dumped her water bottle in their gym bag.
“Oh yeah? Well, I’m about to win this argument.” Sujin grinned an evil grin, leaning closer. She spoke in a sing-song voice, “I know your big secret.”
“Oh yeah? What’s that?” Seojun smirked. He was an open book, there was nothing he ever hid from anyone. And even if he did, there was nothing he was ashamed of.
Sujin took out her phone and pressed play.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Really? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Say la la la la la la la la la la la
“Told you I would find out.” Sujin’s evil grin spread wide as Seojun’s smug smile wavered.
Oh no.
It turned out that here indeed was one thing that Han Seojun was ashamed of.
“Ya, Kang Sujin!” Seojun went for her phone but she bounced out of his way, skipping backward.
“What’s wrong, Seojun-ah? Don’t like this song?” She asked in mock innocence.
Oh God, the horror. The pain, the anguish! The embarrassment!
“Ya! Come here!” Seojun ran after her and she sprinted away from him, running around the court. “Stop playing that!”
“No way. This is my new favorite song.” Sujin shouted back breathlessly as she ran full speed. Seojun caught up with her and she squealed and laughed as he held her by the waist.
“Are you not going to stop?” He didn’t lunge for her phone. Instead opted to tickle her, making her squeal some more, laughing uncontrollably.
“I cave! I cave!” She said, her eyes tearing up from the laughing.
Seojun took her phone and turned off the song. Sujin was red from laughter and Seojun felt an ache to kiss her then and there. But he didn’t want to encourage her triggering the PTSD he had from that embarrassing incident in high school.
“Lim Jukyung is such a traitor. I can’t believe she told you.”
“I’m your girlfriend. Of course, she told me. Shouldn’t I know you were dancing around half naked in front of another woman?” Sujin wiped the tears from her eyes, still shaking from the aftershocks of laughing.
“Aish! That was so embarrassing. I never want to remember that happened.” Seojun admitted, going red as he thought back to when he had been dancing around in his house, wearing nothing but his underwear and had failed to notice that Lim Jukyung had been there with his sister the entire time.
“Waeeee? I find it funny.” And then she burst out laughing again. Han Seojun walked away in a huff. He couldn’t face the embarrassment any longer, especially not in front of Sujin.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” Sujin chased after him.
Han Seojun would have buried the incident again, along with his memory of that song but then there it was again.
That dreaded song.
They were having lunch with everyone; Jukyung, Suho, Taehoon, Suah and his squad with Chorong, when suddenly, he heard the tune faintly.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Seojun thought he was imagining it. But then Sujin took out her phone and the song played clearer. That damn woman had set it as her ring tone.
That dreaded song.
“Oops, getting a call. Be right back.” Sujin said with just enough pretend innocence that it passed off as sincere to others, but he knew. He knew.
Han Seojun glared at Jukyung accusingly and she made an apologetic face. Luckily, no one else seemed to pick up on Seojun’s discomfort. Suho did give him a pointed look but Suho knew that he did not have the privilege of making fun of Seojun the way Sujin did. And that wasn’t a matter of Seojun getting mad at him. It was a matter of Kang Sujin destroying anyone who would say one syllable against her boyfriend.
“Sujinnie,” Seojun pouted like a child that night as they made dinner, “I don’t like your ringtone.”
Her phone had been ringing all day. A little too frequently, Seojun had noticed. It was almost as if Sujin had scheduled all of her calls to today just to mess with him.
“Oh, should I change it?” She asked causally, “Okay, you pick something you like.”
Seojun grinned and padded over to the counter, setting her ringtone to one of his songs.
That night Seojun had gone to sleep thinking that chapter of his embarrassing event was over. He dreamed peacefully of being on stage and serenading Sujin with the songs he had written for her. But then his dream was interrupted with that jingle again.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Seojun woke up with a gasp. No, it wasn’t just his dream. The song was actually playing. Sujin stirred and shut off her alarm.
Her alarm that was set to play Okey Dokey.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! Seojun screamed in his head, cursing the storm he imagined himself drowning in. He loved Kang Sujin. He could never deny her anything, even if it led to his own torment.
But why, why out of everything she had to choose this.
Sujin got up, and didn’t even notice Seojun stuff his head in his pillow as she went to the bathroom.
“Hyung, are you okay?” One of his bandmates asked upon seeing Seojun’s dark circles and dead expression.
“Huh? I’m okey, dokey.” He responded dreamily. The band member backed away in concern.
ii.
Ever since they had gotten close, Seojun had stopped challenging her. True, they would still tease and play the push-pull game but it wasn’t like it had been before. Before they had felt like equals. Now it felt like Sujin had all the power and oddly enough, she didn’t like that. She worried it might get too boring for Han Seojun. She worried it wasn’t good for him to coddle her so much. He needed to have just as much of a say in things as she did.
She had meant the song to just stir some new challenge between them. He would respond with embarrassment and demand that she gets rid of the song. He would finally set a line for her; a restriction and she would comply to and balance would be restored. No longer would she be the one dictating everything.
But it had the opposite effect. Sujin hadn’t realized how it was torturing him till she saw him jump when they passed by a store that had been coincidentally playing the song.
“It’s following me.” Seojun had hissed. Sujin became worried she had gone too far. She hadn’t realized how much the incident had affected him.
Fortunately, Sujin knew what to do.
Come home early tonight. Sujin’s text came.
“Is everything okay?” He asked the second he entered. Sujin never asked him to be home early, knowing his busy schedule. He was lucky that his other band mate had gotten ill, and practice had been cancelled.
“Yeah, gimme a minute!” Sujin called from their bedroom.
Seojun threw his jacket on the sofa and unbuttoned his sleeves, getting ready to make dinner. But then he froze.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
He groaned, “Aaaaah, chagiiii! Geuman-hae already.” He turned and then froze again, dropping his phone on the floor.
In the door frame of their bedroom stood Kang Sujin wearing leopard print camisole and a blue bathrobe, striking an exaggerated dancing pose. The camisole reached just below her thighs. The rest of her long, long, long legs were available for him to gawk at.
Seojun gulped. Good God.
You ready?
I'm ready
Yea, okey dokey yo
Sujin began dancing to the song just like he had, singing along as she moved through the hallway with the graceful movements of a more practiced dancer. It was funny but all too captivating at the same time.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
She came in and danced her way to the fridge, taking out a water bottle, and pouring it over her head.
Really? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Say la la la la la la la la la la la
She didn’t have the chance to continue as Seojun picked her up in his arms. She squealed in joy as he kissed her.
“Ah, Kang Sujin that’s the sexiest thing anyone’s ever done for me.” He said, leaning her over as she laughed.
Seojun forgot all about the song as he bridal carried a squealing Sujin to their room. They both fell down on the bed, laughing. Sujin ran a hand through his hair.
“Hey, Sujinnie. Guess what underwear I’m wearing today.” Seojun grinned.
So you are one of my favorite writers for the Maribat Fandom and this is litterally like just on the edge getting ready to dive into barely there territory. . . but imagine Chloe "Queen B" Bourgeois deciding that Roy Harper is her future husband because he is the only one her age with the potential to even hyphenate Queen. She /will/ get her title in her civilian life if she has to drag Roy to the courthouse herself. Cue shenanigans and chaos friends to lovers lol
You’re so sweet and I hope I did your prompt justice. I love the Roy X Chloe energy and this is just something I could picture cannon Chloe trying. I hope you enjoy! @risaxtitan
The Future Mrs. Queen
The day Oliver Queen announced to the world in that fated press conference that he was adopting Roy Harper, the younger boy had no idea how much his life was about to change.
He was still floating on Cloud 9 as he stepped off of the stage and into the crowd where his friends awaited him.
“Dude, congrats! It’s like all official now!” Adrien clapped him on the back, causing him to stumble forward a little.
“It still feels unreal.”
“Tt, it’s not like your his blood son, but I suppose this will be a good opportunity for you.”
Roy cocked his head to the side as he tried to debate if Damian was congratulating him or not. A small smack echoed following an ‘oof’ as Marinette’s bright smile entered his view.
“I’m so happy for you Roy! Conner, Jon, and Wally wanted to come with us, but you know how it goes. Always a mission somewhere.”
Roy shook his head, the smile still plastered across his face.
“It’s fine Mari, it’s not like today was the real thing. This was just a press conference. They were there when we officially signed the papers and that’s what matters in my book.”
“So, like, is your last name officially Queen now?”
Roy’s attention snapped to his left where a familiar blonde stepped out from behind Adrien. She fiddled with the ends of her curled hair, her mischievous blue eyes locked onto his. Certainly if a beautiful girl like her had told him her name, he wouldn’t have forgotten it.
“I suppose so. It’s officially Roy William Harper-Queen.”
Her smile was blinding as he nervously reached back to rub the back of his very warm neck.
“Oh Gods, we are so dense! I’m sorry Roy! This is my friend Chloe Bourgeois! Adrien was supposed to introduce you two earlier, but we all got separated in the crowd. She’s a big fan of Oliver Queen, so when she heard my dear friend was getting adopted by him-”
“I just had to come.” She stepped in front of Marinette, reaching forward to grab his hand. “Did you know that I tried to legally change my name to Queen? But my mother wouldn’t let me! She’s ridiculous, utterly ridiculous. Something about it wouldn’t be good for my modeling career or whatever. But now, you can help me with that! Can’t be bad if it’s my husband’s last name.”
Roy stumbled out of her grasps, his entire face matching the red on his head.
“Hu-husband? Girl, we just met. You can’t go around saying things like that!”
Chloe waved off his embarrassment as her blinding smile pulled into a mischievous smirk.
“Like it or not Roy Harper-Queen, you will be my husband, even if I have to drag you to the courthouse myself!”
“Yeah right blondie.” He couldn’t help the stutter in his voice as he hid behind Damian’s chuckling figure.
There was no denying how attractive she was, but he would be damned if he let a pretty blonde step in and seal his fate.
“Maybe not today, but you’re going to love me Roy Harper-Queen, just you wait.”
The flip of her hair felt like a slap across his face as he watched her retreating figure dragging Marinette with her.
“So like, Can I be your best man? I know that you’ve known the other’s longer and all, but like we are always hanging out together! That has to count for something.”
Adrien’s wide eyes and pout earned a slight chuckle from the redhead as his eyes trailed back to where his friends stood.
“Sure Agreste, I’m sure everyone won’t mind one bit. You might have to fight Tim-”
“Tt, is that supposed to be a threat?”
Adrien and Roy shared a look before bursting into laughter. Roy slung his arms around the two boys as they headed off into the crowd. He wouldn’t see Chloe for another couple of weeks, but that didn’t stop the blonde from monopolizing his every thought.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
“C’mon Arsenal, you really going to let your ass get beat by a little girl?”
Roy sneered as he pushed himself off the matt for the third time that day.
When Dick asked if he wanted to train with the Batclan, Roy was over the moon. Batman hardly let anyone into his special training spot without him being there. He didn’t think twice when he put the motorcycle in park outside of Wayne Manor. He already knew what to expect, Dick’s flexibility, Stephanie’s strategy, Damian’s rage. What he wasn’t expecting was to see a certain blonde and his two friends.
“She’s not beating my ass Stephanie, I just don’t want to hurt her.”
Dick had a hard time holding back his laugh as he leaned on Marinette for support. A hand shot into his line of view as he accepted Chloe’s helping pull him the rest of the way to his feet.
“C’mon mon chéri, your face is pretty too, but it’s not going to make me pull my punches. Give it to me, cherry.” She sent a wink in his direction as she set up for another spar.
If you asked Roy later, the red in his cheeks was from the anger at being called a cherry, but anyone could see the blush betraying him.
Chloe darted forward, dodging his first swing before smacking his butt.
“HEY!”
Roy pushed himself out of her reach as Stephanie and her shared a fist bump. There was no way he was getting out of training alive. He needed a way to finish this as quickly as possible.
“Blondie, what if we make a bet?”
Chloe raised her eyebrow at him, encouraging him to continue as she set herself back up in the circle.
“The next one of us to pin the other gets to pick the next hang out spot. I know it’s your turn in the rotation, so if you win, nobody will put a restriction on your choice.”
Her eyes glistened dangerously as a collective gasp sounded behind them.
“Hey, Roy, are you sure you want to do that? She-”
“Shut it Agreste. The boy has named his terms, no restrictions for me, or he gets to steal my turn. I’ll gladly accept Ginger.”
A sudden shift in the atmosphere was easily noticeable. Inadvertently, a shiver went down his back as every hair on his body stood in high alert. Her first strike was quick, he barely lifted his arms up in time to block it before she had hopped backwards, ready to hit again.
He thought he was the one holding back before, but clearly he was underestimating. Here she was, no longer holding back, toying with him as if he was nothing more than her prey. It was a bit terrifying.
Just as he extended his arm to try and make contact, Roy suddenly found himself on his back, her knee at his throat.
“God, when did you even knock my feet out?”
Her eyes were dancing with humor as she slowly stood, offering her hand to the boy below.
“We tried to warn you, my friend. Chloe doesn’t do competition, she destroys them.”
Adrien offered his hand as well and together the two blondes heaved him to his feet. Marnette shook her head solemnly as she and Dick mock prayed for Roy’s fate.
“So, no restrictions huh? That means overseas is fair game.” Chloe placed a hand gently on Roy’s shoulder sending a chill down his spine. “Guess tomorrow, we are going to Paris, France. Richard, is there a Zeta-Tube that does overseas?”
Dick finished his mock prayer before sending a nod in her direction.
“Perfect. Marinette, tell your little gloomy boyfriend and Timothy that we will be taking a day trip tomorrow, to the city of love.”
She sent a wink to Roy as she stepped out of the rink to grab her towel. No matter how much he tried, he couldn’t ignore the racing in his heart all from one little comment.
“You are falling so hard, my friend!” Roy flinched as Dick threw his arm over his shoulder, sharing a fist bump with Adrien.
“I am not! I barely know her! We’re like acquaintances, at most she’s just a friend.”
Adrien stiffened as he bit back his laughter.
“Just you wait, after tomorrow, you’ll be questioning everything you know.”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Roy was indeed questioning everything, like his sanity, as he stepped out of the tube and onto the tallest platform of the Eiffel Tower. Taking a quick step back from the edge, he found himself pressed against the cool metal.
“Isn’t it like illegal to be this high up?”
Chloe’s giggle filled the air as she smacked his arm lightly.
“Of course it is, for normal people that is. We can’t just have everyone using the Zeta tubes ginger.” Her fingers curled into his hair as she gave it a light ruffle.
“Tt, man up Harper. Even if you fall, it’s not like you’d hit the ground before someone here saved your sorry ass.”
A small ‘oof’ echoed from where Damian stood as Marinette stepped out of the tube.
“You didn’t even hear what I said!”
“True,” she shrugged, a smug smile pulling at her lips. “But I assume you were making fun of Roy.”
Damian huffed under his breath as he snaked his arm around her waist, drawing her into his side. Roy was never sure how someone like Damian could have landed a sweet angel like Marinette, but if it meant he had a constant guardian angel, he could care less.
“Where’s Adrikins?”
“He said, and I quote, ‘I don’t want to be a third wheel and neither does Tim.’”
Chloe rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t hide the sparkle from the new information.
“Looks like it’s a double date!” She gripped Roy’s arm pulling him from his safety. “You wouldn’t leave me alone to those two annoying lovebirds would you Harper?”
Roy gulped nervously as his eyes darted between the couple and the blonde hanging off of him. With a sigh of defeat, he nodded, allowing her to pull him closer to the edge.
“I hope you’re ready Harper because if you survive today, there’s no way you won’t fall for me.”
Without warning, Chloe used all her strength to push him off the platform. The scream caught in his throat as the wind rushed past him. Some first date! Here she was trying to kill him within the first five minutes!
A flash of yellow flew past him, catching his attention briefly before an arm yanked him out of midair. This time, the scream managed to slip out, but instead of fear, he felt instant relief as he flew through the air pinned to Queen Bee’s side.
“There was an easier way of doing this Chloe!” He tried to shout over the wind but it felt useless. The only indication that she might have heard his pleas came from the sideways smile she flashed him as the came to a halt in an alleyway.
As his feet touched to ground, his legs instantly gave out. On his hands and knees, Roy reassured himself that this was safe, in solid ground. Moments later, a flash of pink blinded him as Marinette and Damian landed in front of him.
“What’s wrong Harper? You look a little green. I thought that was Oliver’s color.”
Roy’s middle finger only seemed to fuel the egotistical smirk Damian bestowed on him.
“If that was too much, I can’t wait to see how you handle the rest of the day.”
His eyes widened as he tried to imagine what could be worse than freefalling a few hundred feet from the highest structure in Paris. Little did he know, he would soon get his answer.
“It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Bourgeois.” He tried to keep his voice steady as he offered his hand to her, but the condescending stare made him want to crumble.
“What do you expect me to do? Shake your hand? Honey, you may have been adopted into money, but you are not money. I do not touch any person that is worth less than I am.”
She turned her back briskly as Roy slowly dropped his hand, unsure of whether to be insulted or not.
“Mom, Roy is my friend, can’t you be nice?”
Her mother’s cold glare rested on Chloe. Roy had no idea how she managed to stand her ground. He wanted to crumble for her.
“You are lucky I let you into my workshop after you have missed the past three fittings. When I said you could move to America with the Marianne kid, I expected you to still make time for the business. Should I begin looking for your replacement?”
The tension between the two of them was deadly. Roy wanted to step in, tell her mother to back off, that Chloe was a hero who didn’t always have time for fashion, but somehow, he figured it would only make it worse.
“No mother, I am here now am I not? Let us work quickly so that I can return home.”
Her tone was icy as she stepped forward, holding out her arms for her mother to remeasure. Roy shifted from foot to foot as he held back his tongue. Her mother commented on her weight gain, complained that she was going to begin to fat to be her model anymore. She commented on her studies, or lack of, and on her being a class d hero compared to Superman.
It was to quietest he had ever seen Chloe Bourgeois.
“If that will be all mother, Roy and I have to meet up with Damian and Marinette.”
Her mother waved her off. Not a single love you, not even a real goodbye. Roy was sure his face matched his hair by the time they had set foot back into the streets.
“So, Mari’s parent's house isn’t too far from here. Wanna swing over?”
It was as if a switch flipped. Back was the flirty social butterfly that he had gotten to know over the past couple of weeks.
“Chloe.”
“C’mon carrot top, swinging really isn’t a bad way to transport. It’s quick and effective.”
“Chloe.”
“Don’t be a chicke-”
“Chloe.”
He hadn’t meant to raise his voice, but he knew what she was trying to do.
“Chloe, why do you let her treat you like that?”
Her lips were pressed into a tight line as she turned, taking a step away from the building.
“Chloe, you don’t have to pretend that it didn’t happen. I’m not going to tell anyone, it’s just, the Chloe I saw in there is nothing like the one I’ve come to know.”
“Well, maybe all you know is a lie.”
Her voice was quiet as she took off at a brisk pace down the street. It took Roy a second to process before he took off after her. Gently, he pulled her arm until she came to a stop once more.
“Then let me get to know the real Chloe. After all, I can’t marry someone I don’t know!”
She laughed half-heartedly at his joke, her smile weak.
“She isn’t very good with her emotions and neither am I. I know that she cares, hell, she wouldn’t let me explore this hero side of me if she didn’t think I had potential. But she always puts business first. I never wanted to go into business with her because she can’t separate family and employees. But I need the money. Daddy won’t let me touch my trust fund until I am secure on my own.”
Roy nodded, a number of things falling into place.
“Why don’t you work for Oliver or Bruce like the rest of us?”
Chloe shrugged, her fingers absentmindedly reaching for his.
“They have offered before, but I really feel like the way to her heart is through the family business. I know she wants to leave it to me one day and if I abandon it now, she might reconsider, and honestly, that would hurt her more than me. She’ll never say it to my face, but it would mean the world to me if I could be her legacy.”
A moment of silence passed, and then two as Roy admired the determination that crossed her face. Somehow, it made her more beautiful than she already was. He hadn’t even noticed how close they had gotten until a soft cough snapped him back to reality.
“Well, we only left you for like two hours. Is this a new development?”
Marinette and Damian shared a smirk as Chloe dropped his hand as if it was burning her. She tried to pull up her scarf, but it was too late. The red on her cheeks were burning, matching his he was sure.
“I don’t know what you are referring to Dupain-Cheng. Let’s head back to the tower. A certain blonde must feel my wrath.”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
As Roy laid in bed that night, his thoughts kept wandering back to that moment.
She was so close, her lips were so close, so full, so red. They were drawing him in and if Marinette hadn’t stopped them..
“Ughh,” he buried his red face into his pillow, willing his pounding heart to still.
He rolled over to where his phone sat, the dark screen bugging him. Not a single text from her after they returned, not even one from Marinette or Damian teasing him. Reaching out, he lifted the phone toward his face.
Clicking on his photos, the most recent one lit up his entire screen, sending his heart into another fury. Chloe had borrowed his phone, leaving several adorable selfies that he only found a couple hours later.
Not that he wanted to admit it to anyone, but maybe he could admit to himself that just maybe, he was already head over heels for Chloe Bourgeois.
Just as he moved to place it back onto his charger, a text message pinged.
‘Still awake carrot top?’
Roy couldn’t help the smile that tore across his face.
‘Depends. Whose asking blondie?’
‘You’re ridiculous, utterly ridiculous. Now open your window, my arm is getting tired.’
Instantly, Roy shot up as he opened his window. Looking around, he couldn’t find her. He was ready to close it when his instinct told him to look up. Sure enough, Queen Bee sat dangling, motioning for him to move out her way.
With one great heave, Chloe swung into his room, dropping her transformation before her feet even touched the ground.
“Miss me that much?”
The sound of his own voice was foreign as his wide smile was certain to leave his cheeks sore in the morning.
“Oh don’t get full of yourself Harper. I just wanted to thank you for today.”
“Mhmm, this seems mighty personal for a thank you.” He took a step forward, his stomach flipping multiple times.
“I may have also wanted to see you. After all, no text, no call. How is a girl supposed to feel after you almost kiss her?”
She stepped forward closing the gap between them, the smirk on her face as graceful as ever.
“I could say the same thing about you. Running off to another man after spending a day in the city of love with me?”
Hestitanly, he raised his hand to cup her cheek, basking in the feeling of how soft her skin felt against his palm.
“Harper, I want to be to future Mrs.Queen, so what do you say? The courthouse is still open in Paris, we can go right now.”
Roy couldn’t help the laugh that escaped. Gently, he stroked the side of her cheek, admiring her every feature. Leaning forward, he heard her breath hitch in her throat right as their lips were a mere inch apart.
“How about we start with a first date? A real date?”
Chloe’s warm breath tickled his lips as his pounding heart awaited her answer.
“I suppose Mrs. Queen will have to wait, I’ll pick you up, tomorrow Harper. Be ready.”
Just as quickly as he leaned in, she lept back, already calling her transformation. Racing to the window, she looked over her shoulder, blowing him a kiss before slinging away. Hesitantly, he approached the window, watching her retreating figure, his heart still racing a million miles a minute.
It started off a soft chuckle, but it soon grew. With a grand smile, Roy returned to his bed, his thoughts all centered around one blonde. Marriage was sounding less and less like the scary thought he had when he first met her. He wasn’t sure the exact moment that it sounded so good, but he didn’t care.
After all, Chloe Harper-Queen had a nice ring to it.
Happy Birthday, Baby
Just a little drabble for Ben's birthday! I hope you like it! It's very cute and silly :)
Happy Birthday Ben!
Pairing: Ben Barnes x reader
Word Count: 1193
You were beginning to regret your choice of present for his birthday.
He had been dreaming about this expensive camera for months, hesitating in buying it or not because he had one already that was still working perfectly fine even if it was starting to get a bit out of date. You had argued that he had more than enough money to buy it and that he should do so if it made him happy, but Ben was a reasoned person that sometimes rationalized things a little too much. His generous nature would have pushed him to buy it in the blink of an eye if you had been the one wanting it, but if it were for himself, he was more willing to weigh the pros and cons.
So, as his birthday came closer and he was still indecisive about his camera, you had secretly bought it for him. And as he unwrapped his present, he had tears in his eyes and a touched smile on his face, proof, if you needed any, that you had aimed for the perfect gift this year again.
But it had been about two hours since you had offered him his gift, and you were beginning to regret it. At first, he played with the new functionalities on it, and tried different settings, and that was completely normal. But two hours later, and he had still not put his camera down, which started to be a little annoying.
What was even more annoying though was the fact that he was now taking pictures of you. Which you didn't always mind, if the light was right and you were sharing a memory together. But now you were just washing the dishes, with foam up your wrists and your hair a mess, and feeling everything but photogenic at that moment.
You heaved a sigh, giving him a pointed look.
"Ben, what are you doing now?"
"Enjoying my present!" he answered with the most adorable excited tone, and you felt your will to scold him melt already.
"I'm not even doing anything interesting or looking pretty right now," you argued, but he looked at you with a frown.
"You're always pretty. What are you talking about?"
You rolled your eyes but were unable to refrain a smile.
"I am not always pretty. It's just love blinding you."
"That's not true. You're beautiful, period."
"I wasn't pretty when I puked on your shoes when I had a stomach flu."
"The puking part wasn't sexy, but you were still beautiful. It's the vomit that was disgusting. Can't believe you destroyed my favourite pair of trainers..."
"It was more than a year ago!"
"You're the one bringing it up again! Now, look at me, and smile."
Instead, you stuck your tongue out at him, making a silly face that made him laugh, and he took a picture of you anyway.
"You're adorable when you're annoyed," he grinned, making you even more irritated.
"Don't push your luck, birthday boy," you warned him, waving a dirty plate at him as a threat.
He merely laughed in response, coming closer to hug you from behind, wrapping his arms around your stomach to press your back into his chest.
"Thank you for the camera, I love it," he whispered in your ear, his breath against your cheek eliciting goosebumps across your arms, and his words making you smile.
"I'm happy you like your present."
He hummed in agreement, before dropping his head to gently kiss your shoulder.
"I love you more, though," he went on in the same quiet tone. "I'm just happy we can be together this year, instead of me working on another continent or whatever. That's the best gift you could give me, to just be here with me today."
You turned your head to drop a peck on his cheek, his dark beard tickling your lips.
"I love you too, you sappy baby," you answered, making him laugh again.
"You're even cheesier than I am, don't deny it," he argued, burying his face in the crook of your neck, his beard rough against your skin, but you actually loved the familiar feeling.
"Yeah, maybe... but I reckon that you love it."
"I do. I love you."
"I love you too."
"I'm gonna print all these pictures I've just taken, by the way."
"Why? I'm not doing anything!"
"You're being yourself, domestic. And that's all I really want with you. I want us to be domestic around each other. I want us to be so damn used to being around each other that we barely remember how it was before we were together. I want these little scenes with you, like you washing the dishes, or getting up all grumpy in the morning. I want that kind of intimacy with you. I want to be here for everything, doesn't matter if you're dressed up or puking all over my shoes."
You brushed a tear away before it could fall and Ben could see it.
"Who's the cheesiest now, huh?" you asked, feeling your throat tightened and your voice dropping of an octave as a result, while your heart was ready to burst with affection.
"I guess I am."
"I do want that with you too, you know?"
"No, you're still the cheesiest little heart there is," he grinned against your neck, making you roll your eyes. "But I have an idea, and you need to give up on the dishes for me to try it. Washing can wait."
"Should I be worried?"
"Hmm... Let's say that... I'd like to try to take a new kind of pictures."
"A new kind of pictures? What does that mean?"
"Let's say... it'll be more comfortable for this activity if we're in the bedroom."
You laughed, the sound bright and happy and making a grin find its way to his lips without his consent.
"I see... Well... it is your birthday after all."
"It is."
"So... I guess, I shouldn't say no, right?"
"Hmm... I mean, you can if it makes you uncomfortable. But it's not like I haven't seen you naked hundreds of times before, and didn't know your body like the back of my hand by now."
"If you know me so well, then no need for pictures."
"Art should always be immortalized."
You laughed at him, shaking your head at his silliness.
"That was a terrible line!"
"You loved it. Come on, come back to bed. You know you won't regret it."
He gave you one of these glances you couldn't resist to. The seductive ones, with full-blown pupils you could barely see the shape in because of how dark his irises looked. He bit down on his bottom lip, and you knew you were gone for good. The effect the man had on you should have been illegal...
And the worst was that you knew he wasn't lying, or gloating. You wouldn't regret climbing upstairs to your shared bedroom, of that you were certain.
So, the choice was easy to make, and the dishes were abandoned for the rest of the day, when you and Ben had more important things to attend to.
Don’t Be Afraid: Poe Dameron x Solo!Reader - Chapter Twenty One
Chapter Twenty One: Old Friends
Series Masterlist
Plot: Y/n and Poe pay a visit to Maz Kanata, but don’t find what they expect to.
Warnings: maybe one curse word
Word Count: 6.1k
A/N: This day has been...a day...and I almost didn’t get this one out because of how long it took me to edit. There’s so much dialogue in these chapters that can’t be cut (especially about planets created for Resistance Reborn lol) so sometimes I feel like it’s a bit messy. Anyways, hope you enjoy!
————
“Y/n. Sweetheart, wake up.”
I groggily moaned as I forced my eyes open, blinking a couple times till my vision was clear. I hadn’t intended to fall asleep but as soon as Poe had said it was going to be a while till we arrived at our destination, I was out like a light. We were flying a one man ship so I’d inevitably ended up sitting on Poe’s lap, the sound of his heartbeat had soothed me to sleep.
“We’re coming into the atmosphere,” he announced.
“Good,” I yawned, “Anything from the Falcon?”
Poe shook his head, “Nothing yet.”
“Wow,” I breathed as I took a look at the planet we were approaching, “That’s Ephemera, huh?”
It’s beautiful, Bee commented.
“It is beautiful,” Poe replied, bringing one hand off the controls to squeeze my thigh affectionately.
What kind of planet is it?
“It was once a mining planet, like Bespin. But here they mined the tibanna gas to extinction.” Poe explained to the droid, “After it was all gone, the Empire abandoned its colonies and most of the settlers ran with them. Good riddance, from what I hear. It left the planet back in the hands of its original inhabitants and a few holdouts who weren’t there just to cash in but had grown to love the place. And then, surprise, they discovered tuusah.”
“What’s tuusah?” I asked, still admiring the colors of the planet.
“Residue from the mine runoff. Turns out tuusah has medicinal properties, so a new industry was born. Maybe it wasn’t as lucrative as the Empire’s strip mining, but it was a heck of a lot kinder to the planet’s flora and fauna.”
When were they ever kind?
“You’re right,” he said. “The Empire has never been kind. But the planet is a resort destination now, and the capital is called Wish. What a name, right? It used to be Outpost 665 or something boring like that. But now? Wish. It’s one of the largest spas in the galaxy. All kinds of mineral baths and healing treatments and some kind of legendary oxide therapy that’s supposed to make you look younger.”
Poe and I had both seen our share of the galaxy and anytime we’d go on missions together, we’d get into a debate of who knew more about the planet’s history. Once we knew where we’d be going, we’d both usually try to cram as many facts into our heads in an attempt to outsmart the other.
“What?” he chuckled as he caught me staring at him.
“Nothing,” I grinned, “Just enjoying the lecture, Professor Dameron. When’d you find time to study?”
Poe’s lips tugged upwards into a small smirk, “Doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’ve got nothing.”
They don’t have any treatments for droids, right?
“I think you’re safe. Bee,” I laughed, “We’re not here for facials, we’re here for Maz.”
Poe flew us through the pastel clouds of the planet, it was absolutely gorgeous. I wouldn’t have minded coming back at some point. But the thought of visiting planets purely for recreation seemed like a distant dream. Maybe one day Poe and I could vacation somewhere but for now, our trips were centered on war.
A transmission came in from the landing strip.
“Welcome to Ephemera airspace,” came from a breathy, zen-like voice, “Please identify yourself so that we can grant you landing clearance.”
“This is…” Poe hesitated in giving his name, we hadn’t thought whether or not we should’ve been using aliases. Was it likely that the First Order was hiding out on a planet known for their spa facilities? No. But being cautious never hurt anyone, especially people in our situation.
“Poe Dameron, is that you?” a familiar voice came through, “Oh, give me that mike, dear, I can take it from here.” There were more muffled protests on the other side, leaving us confused.
“Maz?” Poe called.
“What? Of course it’s me, you fool. Who else would have asked you to this backwater?”
“Maz, is everything all right?” I asked.
“Baby Solo! Your boyfriend didn’t tell me you were coming too!” she cried happily, putting heavy emphasis on the word ’boyfriend’.
“Yeah, it sounded like something was going on.” I replied.
“Bah. Just some people getting a little possessive with the equipment. Nothing to concern yourself with. I’ve handled it. Now hurry up. I haven’t got all day.”
Poe furrowed his brows as we looked for a place to park, “Uh, I’d be happy to land, but I don’t see anything that looks like it’ll hold the ship up. Am I in the right place?”
“Oh, you’re right. Isn’t that funny? Some kind of security measure, the locals assure me, but really I think they’re just partial to the undulation.”
“Undulation?” I repeated.
“You’ll see. Everything here sways a bit. Now...let me...”
It took a moment of hearing various sounds on Maz’s end before one of the platforms solidified before our eyes.
“What in the...?” Poe mumbled to himself.
“It’s perfectly safe, Dameron.” Maz assured, “Now are you going to land or not? I thought you were on urgent Resistance business.”
I shook my head in disbelief, only Maz could have picked a place like this. “Copy,” I said. “We’ll see you in a few minutes.”
“Good, good. See you soon. Oh, are you hungry? Have you two eaten? I should have food brought up, shouldn’t I? I’ll have to ask them to prepare something special unless...you don’t have time for a psychedelic experience do you?”
Poe chortled at the question, “Not today, Maz. Like you said, urgent business.”
We landed on the, surprisingly stable, platform Maz had formed for us and headed into the grand looking facility. For all my years of knowing Maz, I still sometimes didn’t understand her. Her connections spanned across the galaxy and back, she knew everybody from beggars on the streets to political diplomats. She had eyes everywhere even if she didn’t move around all that much. Out of all the people the Resistance was seeking aide from, I had no doubt that Maz could probably help us the most.
————
“I’m not helping you with anything,” Maz said, adjusting her goggles to see us clearer. Our faces were nothing sort of shocked. “If you recall, last time I stuck my neck out for the Resistance, the First Order destroyed my castle. Do you know how much I loved that castle?”
“I know, it was spectacular.” I replied, memories of that day flooding back.
“The best. Do you know how long I had had it?”
“A thousand years?” Poe offered.
“A thou...” Max paused, and shot daggers at Poe, who offered her a playful smile in return, “Longer than you’ve been around, flyboy, that’s for sure. So don’t sniff at me like I’m being unreasonable.”
Maz put her hands in a bowl of colorful thick goop and pulled out a handful. It reeked something awful but she didn’t seem to mind as she offered us some, “You want?”
“No, we’re fine.” Poe answered for both of us, my face was scrunched up in disgust at the odor.
Here we were, sitting on lounge chairs inside one of Wish’s day spas putting everything out on the line. And here Maz was refusing to help us. She was perfectly content to sit with her feet soaking in mud and having attendants bring her various teas. She hummed as she rubbed the gelatinous stuff into her face without a care in the world when Poe and I bore the fate of the galaxy on our shoulders.
“What is that stuff? It smells horrid.” I commented, taking another whiff of the air and immediately regretting it.
“Feline poop.” Maz answered casually, “From some species that’s lived here so long that it’s practically native to the planet. Imagine. A planet with no solid ground but plenty of cats. The story is that the founder of Ephemera was a Rothkahar philosopher. He domesticated this species because he thought them of advanced intelligence...or maybe they domesticated him. I forget. Anyway, later on, he found that their excrement had healing properties. High concentrations of tibanna gas, naturally processed into tuusah. Does wonders for the skin.”
Rubbing animal feces into your body to achieve better looking skin. Sure. Totally normal.
“That’s great, Maz,” Poe said, changing the topic quickly, “But can we get back to the topic at hand? The Resistance needs your help.”
“Yes, you told me.”
“We need a place to hide and regroup. It needs to be outside of prying First Order eyes but able to handle our needs for housing, supplies, communications...” Poe explained.
“Didn’t you say there were only a handful of you left on a single ship? What needs could you have?” she replied.
Poe and I glanced over to each other, surprised at how insensitive she sounded. This wasn’t the Maz I knew.
“There’s going to be more,” I pointed out, “The Resistance is scattered across the galaxy and we’re going to continue to grow. We need shelter but we also need people like you. Leia was the only member of our leadership that survived, we need your help in leading the Resistance.”
“Lead the Resistance?” Maz’s eyes moved suspiciously between Poe and I, “I thought that was your job.”
“We…” Poe began, biting his tongue almost immediately. Very few knew about our demotions but we wore shame as if the whole galaxy mocked us.
“Expecting me to do your job for you?” Maz grumbled with a humorless laugh, “You two are the commanders in the room. Or has that changed?”
“Nothing’s changed,” Poe replied quickly, causing me to turn to him in confusion. Were we supposed to lie and cover up the fact that we’d lost our titles? Either way, Maz didn’t seem to care as she lay back in her lounger and closed her eyes. We waited for something, anything, to come out of her mouth. She always had some sort of unique and cryptic wisdom to offer. It was when light snores escaped her lips that it seemed like it was a hopeless cause.
Poe rose from his seat and offered me his hand, “This was a waste of time. We should go.”
“No!” Maz shouted suddenly, grabbing hold of his wrist. All of her trademark personality had left the one eye she had opened and she was dead serious. “Listen closely to me, Poe Dameron. You see me like this, and you think me a fool. Good for me, because when an enemy perceives you as foolish or weak, that is when they are most vulnerable in their arrogance. That is when you strike.”
Upon her last word, she yanked down on Poe’s hand and his feet went out from under him. He landed harshly on his back and had the wind knocked out of him on impact. I rose to help him up but Maz forcefully pushed me back onto my lounge chair with her other hand. She climbed off her seat and stepped onto Poe’s chest, bending over so that her face was almost touching his.
“I see arrogance in you. And that is what gets you in trouble, causes pain.” Maz observed before blindly pointing to me, “And fear in you. It’s controlled you all your life.”
I hated when Maz did this, or at least when it was directed at me. While my ego played a part in the mutiny, fear had been my main motive. Fear played a bigger part in my life than Maz even knew. It stopped me from picking up my lightsaber, it stopped me from telling people that I was Force sensitive, it delayed me from deciding to train as a Jedi…
“We learned our lesson,” Poe gritted out, still pinned down and I didn’t dare to help him.
“Have we?” Maz asked, looking between the two of us.
I struggled for words, I didn’t want to have to recount the events again. Especially to someone who could see right through me. The few times I’d slept since Crait had been filled with nightmares containing the transports exploding and the screams of my fallen comrades. Asleep or awake, I was being forced to relive my mistake constantly.
“You asked if we were still leaders,” Poe started, he could tell I was too wrapped in my thoughts to speak, “The truth is that I don’t know. W-We made some mistakes...”
“Mistakes?” Maz repeated.
“We led a mutiny,” I blurted out, the truth flowing from my lips quicker than I could manage. “We were being kept in the dark and didn’t trust the person in charge. I had just lost Dad and Mom was in a coma and I panicked, alright? I-I felt like I had to do something! I didn’t want anyone else to die and we ended up killing so many.”
“And did you?” Maz jutted her chin up as she looked at me, “Have to do something?”
I blinked away the tears that filled my eyes, guilt rose in my chest as I thought of Holdo. Standing in the hanger as she watched our transports flee the Raddus, she had everything under control while I’d been scheming behind her back.
“No,” I trembled and ducked my head as if that would shield me from her vision.
“Dameron?”
“No,” he said, “I’m a soldier and she was my commanding officer. All I had to do was trust.”
I peered up to see Maz plop down on Poe’s chest, a sight that should’ve amused me, but didn’t. The moment had drained me of every emotion that wasn’t sorrow or guilt.
“And now what?” she asked.
“What?” Poe said, his eyes rested on me to make sure I was relatively alright.
“Let’s say you’re right. That your actions, your arrogance, got many people killed. Led the Resistance to where they are now: broken, on the run, destitute, and begging for help.”
As I stayed silent, Poe spoke up, “We fix it.”
“How will you do that?” she asked. “You can’t bring the dead back. You can’t single-handedly rebuild the Resistance, although,” Maz snorted and looked between the two of us, “If anyone was going to try it would be you two.”
“I can bring down the First Order.” Poe answered.
“Alone?” Maz raised her eyebrows in amusement
“If I have to.”
She shook her head, “Arrogance. Still.” Maz adjusted her position so she was kneeling over him, “You know who else is arrogant? The First Order.”
“The First Order is evil, Maz, that’s not a fair comparison.” I stuck up for my boyfriend, sniffling after, “No one knows that better than me.”
Maz adjusted her goggles again, seemingly staring straight into my soul. While I’d never explicitly told her about my family history, she’d always known. If you knew the Solo family, it wasn’t hard to connect the dots as to why we suddenly became a permanent party of three one day. I hoped she wouldn’t push it, that was one wound I didn’t need reopened.
“I’ve seen evil in many forms, children. The First Order is no worse than the Sith, or the Empire, or countless others who would use the dark side. As always, they must be countered with the light. But...” Maz finally climbed off of Poe and came back to sit on her lounge chair, removing her spectacles as she did, “I have my own way of fighting. Not everything is about armadas and starfighters, you know.”
Poe sat up finally, rubbing at his sore back and stared at Maz. I was just as surprised, I never thought that she would be the one to disappoint me. She seemed so…
“You think I’m callous,” she finished my thought, “But I’m not. You will be fine without me.”
I scoffed at her dismissal and stood up, “You’re the last person I would’ve expected to say no to helping, Maz. Especially after what happened to Dad…”
“I sure hope you’re right, lady,” Poe said bitterly, “Because if you’re not, me and mine are going to die. And you can sit with that for a thousand more years for all I care.”
With that, we silently made our way out of the spa feeling like even bigger failures than we had when we entered.
————
I dried the last of my tears as Poe asked for clearance to leave for the second time, only to be denied. One of his arms was tightly wound around my torso, Maz’s questioning had opened a floodgate I’d been trying to keep shut. The mutiny, Holdo, Dad…I wished more than anything that my father was here, he would know exactly what to do. How to rebuild, how to lead, how to atone for my sins…
I growled and smacked the side window of our ship, “Why won’t they just let us off this damned planet?”
Poe tried again to be met with the same breathy voice with a different message, “Negative, pilot. You have company.”
We looked around through the pastel fog that surrounded us and found nothing. A sudden knock on the window had us both jumping and reaching for our blasters till we saw who it was. Maz.
“Open up,” she said with another tap on the glass.
Poe opened the cockpit and Maz leaned into the small space.
“There’s something I meant to tell you before you ran off like that. But first, where did you get this ship? It’s a relic.”
“It’s a loaner.” Poe answered exasperatedly, “I told you we’re down to scrap metal, everything else destroyed. Now what do you want?”
“It’s a relic, but it’s also a collectible. When you’re done with it, come see me. I might buy it.”
I sighed frustratedly, “Maz, what do you want? We’ve got places to be.” That was a lie, we had absolutely nowhere to go.
Maz waved us off as if we had all the time in the world. “We’ve long suspected that the First Order has been taking children and disappearing people on the margins of the galaxy. But things are escalating now: arresting people on phony trumped-up charges. Small crimes that they’ve blown up into capital offenses, or charges simply fabricated out of nothing. People going missing in the dead of night, their families having no idea what happened to them. Nighttime raids or picked up off the streets and vanished. And the people most likely to disappear? People with ties to the old rebellion. And interestingly enough, we’re seeing it with some old Imperials, as well. Those who have been outspoken about their distaste for the First Order, but also those who have remained neutral. Anyone who might pose a threat, now or down the line.”
“Do you think that’s what happened to our allies?” I thought out loud, “They could’ve been arrested?”
“Maybe. Possibly.” Maz answered with a shrug, “But the First Order used to do it in secret. Now they don’t bother. They snatch people off the streets and don’t even pretend to have whatever planet they’ve infiltrated hold a sham trial. Just death or labor camps.”
“Labor camps?” Poe breathed, it was a heavy revelation.
“Someone has to build all those fancy new ships, eh?”
Poe and I shared a look, trying processing the information. “Thanks, Maz,” he said thoughtfully, “Leia will want to know about this.”
“Yes, I thought she might. Rumor has it that there’s a list somewhere of all the people they’ve taken. A big list. No one’s seen it, but I’ve got people chasing it down. I hear something definitive, I’ll call you.”
“Please do,” I responded with a single nod.
“You sure you don’t want to sell this ship?” Maz gestured to our ship once more.
“Not ours to sell.” Poe replied.
“A shame.”
Poe began to close the cockpit just as Maz called our names, “Poe! Y/n!”
We turned our heads to see a knowing smile on her face, “Be the light.”
————
We’d just gotten off Ephemera when we began to discuss the visit.
Bee initiated the conversation, What’s wrong?
“I guess I expected more.” Poe answered, earning a hum of agreement from me.
Well, what did you expect?
“Anything. I’ve known Maz a long time and never once has she disappointed me.” I shook my head, “Guess I can’t say that anymore.”
I’m sorry.
“Maybe our expectations were too high.” Poe let out a heavy sigh.
I leaned my head back against his shoulder and let out a similar sound. My mind was swirling with chaos, most of which I’d created for myself. I felt like there was going to be a dark cloud of shame that followed me around for the rest of my life. Poe’s reply to Maz back in the spa still had me thinking though, we had to fix our mistake. We couldn’t bring back the people we’d lost, but we could try to make amends. The question of how we would do that, I still didn’t have an answer for but I was determined enough to figure it out.
Communication coming in, it’s from the Millennium Falcon.
I sucked in a breath, it was the first contact I’d had since I’d left the ship. What was waiting on the other end? I felt my anxiety building once again at the extreme scenarios that filled my head. As if he could read my mind, Poe grabbed my hand and squeezed hard. His nerves were just as high as mine.
“Put it through, buddy.” Poe requested, his thumb rubbing over my hand lightly, “This is Poe Dameron, everything all right?”
“Poe!” Rose’s voice greeted, “Good to hear your voice. Wait, isn’t Y/n with you?”
“I’m here, Rose. Is everything okay?” I held my breath as we awaited her answer.
“Falcon’s on land,” she answered, “We’re hoping you and Maz will join us.”
“Maz isn’t coming,” Poe said regretfully, “I’m afraid she’s decided to sit this fight out.”
“What? Why?”
I didn’t want to lie to Rose but didn’t feel right telling her just how disinterested in our sufferings Maz appeared to be. “It’s a long story. Where are you guys?”
“That’s a long story too but the short version? Leia secured us temporary shelter on Ryloth.”
“That’s great news, Rose,” I sighed, turning to Poe who seemed to be lost in his own thoughts and giving him a nudge. He shook himself out of his daze, “We’ve got a place to land. Ryloth system.”
“The Ryloth system?” Poe repeated with a small chuckle, “How did Leia pull that one off? I thought Ryloth didn’t pick sides.”
“She’s Leia,” Rose replied.
“She is, indeed,” Poe reenforced as I grinned, I was beginning to think there truly was nothing my mother couldn’t do.
“I’m sending BB-8 the coordinates now.”
I watched as the coordinates appeared on the display screen, Poe examined them, “This says head for the outermost moon. Is that correct?”
“Ambassador Yendor has asked our starfighters to meet there. Once everyone’s collected, he’ll bring you in under cover.”
“Ah,” he said, “So we’re not officially on Ryloth.”
“It’s a bit of a stealth mission. The government knows we’re here but they can’t acknowledge us. We’re working directly with the Ryloth Defense Authority.”
“The Ryloth Defense Authority? I don’t know what that is, but it sounds promising.” Poe said, I heard just an ounce of hope in his voice for the first time in a while.
“Leia can explain once you guys are here. Any word from the rest of your Black Squadron?”
“Negative,” he answered, “But we’re just clearing planet orbital space. We’ll follow up with Black Teams One and Two shortly and give them the coordinates.”
“Affirmative. Leia also wants you to follow up with Inferno Squadron and give them the coordinates, too.”
“We will.” I replied.
“Great. See you soon.”
“Out,” Poe said before ending the transmission, “If I haven’t ever said it, your mother is incredible.”
“I’m pretty sure you sing her praises in your sleep,” I jested, earning a pinch to my side.
“BB-8, open a secure channel to Black Team One.” Poe directed.
After a few seconds waiting, Snap’s voice came through, “Is that you, Poe? Y/n? Everything okay?”
“All good, here, Snap.” Poe stated, “Checking in on the status of your mission and to give you coordinates to a meeting place.”
There were muffled curses through the speaker of the ship followed by a voice shouting “Yes!”. Snap followed, “Copy that, Poe. And your timing is excellent. Karé and I have left Akiva with Norra and Wedge in hand.”
“Everything okay?” I asked.
“Nothing we couldn’t handle. Some local opposition and some less than effective surface to air cannons. We took care of it.”
“Good to hear,” Poe replied, “And everything’s good with Wedge and…and your mom?”
“Oh, she’s crazy as ever,” Snap laughed, “But aren’t we all these days? It’s her life, right? I’m going to let her live it.”
“I’m glad to hear that, Snap” I smiled, “I’m going to send you the coordinates right now.”
“Received.” he answered after a moment, “I’ll get them to the team. Listen, we’re going to make a couple of detours to see if we can find any of Phantom Squadron still kicking around.”
“Phantom Squadron?” Poe asked, “They haven’t flown together since my mom was still an active pilot.”
“We need people, right?”
I shrugged, “It’s worth a shot, they’d have experience.”
“See, your girlfriend approves. It won’t take long. We’ll see you on Ryloth before you know it.”
Poe chucked under his breath, “Alright, watch your back out there, Snap.”
“Always do.” Snap answered just before Poe ended the communication.
“So are you calling the shots now for my squadron?” Poe asked with a smile.
I snickered, “All I did was endorse the idea. One pilot is enough for me to manage, I don’t need five of you.”
Without even having to ask, Bee started connecting us to Sura and Jess.
“Poe! Y/n!” Sura yelled, causing us to jolt back in our seat, “I can only talk for a sec. Real busy here!”
“What’s going on?” Poe’s voice drained of all humor, “Are you and Jess under fire?”
“Uhh...you could say that.” Suralinda screamed just as the comm ended suddenly.
“Bee,” I hurried, “What happened?”
I don’t know!
“Well, can you reconnect?” Poe cried, nerves had over taken him.
I’m going to try.
“Keep trying,” he replied, “Something’s happening to them, why did I make the call to send them there? I should have-“
“Stop,” I said, attempting to keep my anxiety at bay for Poe’s sake, “We don’t know anything yet. Do not start beating yourself up before we even know what happened.”
He attempted to take some deep breaths as I kept a hand on him, but I didn’t sense his panic decreasing at all. We waited for several minutes, consumed by fear that our friends were dying, until the connection finally went through.
“Poe?” Jess’s voice rang through, “Is that you? Y/n?”
“Jess,” Poe breathed, his body relaxing back into the seat, “Is that you?”
“Oh yeah. I just tagged Suralinda into the ring, so she had to go,” she answered as she panted for breath. There was an unmistakeable roar of a crowd in the background.
“Ring?” I asked, “Jess, where the hell are you?”
“Barterus. Gladiatorial ring. The ex-Imperial Suralinda was looking for? Teza Nasz? She wouldn’t see us unless we bested her greatest warriors in hand-to-hand combat, so Suralinda thought-”
“Fuck,” Poe cursed and threw his head back, “Suralinda thought she’d throw two very much needed Resistance pilots into the death pits of Rattatak for the sake of simply talking to an ex-Imperial who may or may not be of help to us?”
“Well,” Jess responded meekly after a few seconds, “When you put it that way.”
“Get out of there, Jess,” Poe ordered, “It’s not worth losing either one of you. We need you flying for Black Squadron more than we need this Teza Nasz.”
“Yeah, I’m afraid it’s a little too late for that, Poe. The Rattataki don’t take kindly to quitters. It’s sort of a win-or-die situation. But don’t worry. We got this in hand. Oh!”
There was a crash in the background and the sound of a vibro-ax being charged up. It was going to be harder now to reassure Poe that everything was going to be fine…
“I’m up! Gotta go, don’t worry!”
“BB-8 is going to send coordinates for our rendezvous point,” I said, “Get there in one piece as soon as you can.”
“Don’t mess around.” Poe said, ”And don’t die! That’s an order.
“Order received!” Jess announced before disconnecting the communication properly.
“Insanity…” Poe grumbled, though I couldn’t help myself from laughing, “Something funny?”
“I’m sorry,” I said in between my giggles, “I really hope you appreciate that the rest of your squadron are just as hotheaded as you are.”
He sighed irritatedly at me before I felt his chest begin to rumble with laughter. For just a few brief seconds, everything felt okay. Sitting in Poe’s lap, flying together and laughing.
“We need to make one last call,” I said, asking Bee to put it through.
“Shriv here.”
“Shriv,” Poe greeted, “It’s Poe and Y/n, how’s your mission going?
“Oh, you know,” he answered, ”Lots of flying around and getting doors slammed in our faces. But we did find a couple of old friends of the Rebellion. I think Leia will be pleased.”
“I’m sure she will. We’re headed for Ryloth,” I spoke up, “Does Inferno Squad feel like joining?”
“Absolutely.”
“Great. We’re sending the coordinates now.” Poe replied as he pressed the button.
Shriv answered soon after, “Received. We’re on our way.”
“See you there,” I said and ended the transmission, “Well, that’s a little bit of good news.”
“Yeah,” Poe adjusted a control before asking Bee to jump to lightspeed, "We’re going to need a lot more of it though.”
————
We were one of the thirteen ships that landed on Ryloth in the middle of the night. I was happy to see as many ships as that in the hanger when Poe and I dismounted, it was a good start. He was the first one to spot Mom,
“Leia!” he called out and we jogged across the hanger to get to her. Even though I’d known she was safe on Ryloth, I couldn’t relax until I’d actually seen her with my own eyes.
“Commander,” she said with a nod to Poe. He was so embarrassed by his casualness that he hadn’t even realized that she’d called him ‘Commander’ again.
“General,” he greeted again as he blushed, “Sorry for the informality. Just glad to see you again.”
“I’m glad to see you, too, Poe. You too, Commander Solo,” she said, with a wink directed towards me, “Walk with me and tell me what we have.” I’d have to ask her later what we’d done to earn our titles back.
We made our way through the hanger and explained as many people as we could.
“The two pilots there you know from Black Squadron, Jessica Pava and Suralinda Javos.” Poe pointed towards the duo, plus a recently added third person, “The woman with them is ex-Imperial-officer Teza Nasz. They found her on Rattatak after fighting in the death pits.”
Sura and Jess looked…well, they could’ve looked worse. Jess’s dark hair was matted with blood, Sura had a few bruises and her lip was split. Teza Nasz was easily the most intimidating person I’d ever seen in my life. She wore a one-shouldered jumpsuit made up of various animal skins and mismatched pieces of armor. There were lines that were cut into her arm, no doubt by a knife and she had dark red dreadlocks down her back.
“That warlord is ex-Imperial?” Mom asked, I could hear her stifling a laugh.
Poe explained her backstory and how she’d been an officer in the Imperial Navy, strategist in the Battle of Jakku and was assumed dead shortly after. Suralinda and her had known each other at some point.
Mom was thinking it all over, “Well, she looks like a warrior, not a strategist, but perhaps I shouldn’t judge by looks alone. If she dropped off New Republic scopes that thoroughly and was able to rise to power on Rattatak, she’s probably both. What’s her name, again?”
“Teza Nasz,” I answered at the exact moment the warlord turned around and locked eyes with Mom. There was some sort of silent standoff between the two of them, they were both powerful in their own right. Only once Nasz turned away first did we continue our discussion.
“Who else?” Mom asked before a voice called her name. We turned to see a young girl behind us eagerly waiting to shake Mom’s hand.
“It’s good to finally meet you in person, Zay,” she greeted, “Where’s Shriv?”
“Over here,” the Duros said, walking up to join us. “Good to see you General.”
Shriv had been a Rebellion, now Resistance, fighter. He’d seen everything from the Battle of Endor to the Battle of Jakku during the old days. If you wanted to hear some good war stories, Shriv was your man. I’d only heard of Zay from my mother, I knew that she was recently orphaned and an excellent pilot. Naturally her story tugged at my heart.
After we’d caught up and Shriv had excused himself, Mom asked Zay if they’d located anyone. We made our way over to the civilian transport where she said she thought we’d be happy with what we found. She also filled us in on what had gone on during their mission. Once she got to the point where they were unable to locate many of the people they’d been trying to find, I decided to jump in.
“Maz told us something similar,” I said, “It seems like they’ve disappeared.”
“What does it mean?” Zay asked.
“The First Order, most likely,” Poe answered, “If we know about these potential allies, so do they. They’re just getting to them first.”
We made our way to the transport and took a look at the group. There were two native Twi’lek’s handing out hot towels and water to our allies, everyone was in their own conversations that seemed to die as they noticed Mom’s presence. A single figure broke apart from the small crowd and began walking toward us.
“This is-“ Zay began to say.
“I know who this is,” Mom said quietly before greeting the older man, “General Rieekan.”
As they embraced, I finally placed where I’d heard the name. He’d been a General during the Rebellion, working closely with my mother on Hoth and everywhere else the Rebellion had taken them. Poe, Zay and I broke away from them to let the two old comrades catch up.
“I can’t believe you and Shriv found him,” I patted Zay on the shoulder, “Good job.”
“Thanks,” she beamed at me, before her eyes caught my lightsaber on my hip, “Wait, you’re Commander Solo.”
“Last time I checked.”
“You’re a legend!”
Poe and I exchanged a confused look before I turned back to the girl, “How so?”
“Crait! You took on Kylo Ren all by yourself!” Zay exclaimed, her hands flying to her head, “It’s all over the galaxy how you battled each other. A-And then I heard Luke Skywalker showed up and the two of you fought together. Oh man, I can’t believe I’m actually talking to you!”
How the hell had that story gotten out? I assumed that moment would live and die on Crait, maybe it would spread slowly through the Resistance. I didn’t think I would turn into a galaxy-wide tale. Much less, that it would be told falsely with the embellished storyline that my uncle and I had fought together. I wished that was the truth.
“Well,” I awkwardly smiled, “That’s not entirely true.”
Zay’s face fell as if I’d just crushed some dream of hers, “So you didn’t battle Kylo Ren?”
“Well,” I rubbed the back of my neck, “I did, but-“
“So you are a hero!” she grinned before excitedly shaking my hand, “I can’t tell you how excited I am to meet a real live Jedi knight!”
I could tell I wasn’t going to get in a word edgewise, the girl already looked up to me seemingly. But I felt unnerved at the thought that I was letting someone else think I was a hero. Heroes didn’t lead mutinies and they certainly didn’t get their soldiers killed.
Shouts began to rise behind us in the hanger, we turned to see a crowd was beginning to form. I could clearly hear the punches that were being thrown.
“A fight!” Zay excitedly shouted.
Poe, Shriv and I ran off together to see what was going on. I should’ve known things were going just a little too well to continue that way.
————
A/N: Fun Fact: The conversation between Zay and the reader is based on the ending of TLJ with the three kids reenacting the lightsaber fight. As always, thank for all the support on this series! I’m having the best time writing it 🖤
Diabolik Lovers LUNATIC PARADE ;; Subaru Route ー Chapter 2
*Thud*
*Creaaaak*
Yui: ( Nn... )
( Huh? What time is it...? )
*Rustle*
Yui: ( Last time, I somehow had trouble sleeping, so I didn’t get much rest... )
( ...? Huh...? I can’t move...! W-Why...!? )
???: ...
Yui: ( Someone’s...here...? Wait...!? )
ー She opens her eyes in the hotel room
*Rustle*
Yui: ーー S-Subaru-kun!?
( Huh, hold up? Why is Subaru-kun on my side of the bed...!? )
( Did I fall asleep on the wrong side by accident...? ...No, that shouldn’t be the case... )
Subaru: ...Nn...
Yui: ( Wah! Oh no! Is he waking up...!? )
Subaru: ...Ah?
Yui: Um...Well...Good...morning...?
Subaru: Yeah...Hm?
Wait, y-you!? Why are you here!?
Didn’t I tell you to stay away from this side!?
*Thud*
Yui: No! This is my side...!
Subaru: Haah!? Yeah riーー
Yui: But look! My Rosary is placed next to the pillow...
Subaru: ...
Yui: ( What now? He went silent... )
Subaru: Aah...Right...Yesterday...
Haah...
Yui: Um, Subaru-kun...?
Subaru: ...How are you feelin’?
Yui: Eh...? How I feel? I’m totally fine though...
Subaru: ...Good.
Yui ( I wonder what he means...? )
Anyway...Why were you sleeping on my side of the bed...?
Subaru: ...Well...
...Oh shut up. Why does it matter!?
Yui: Eh? ...I’m curious...
( I mean...He’s the one who kept on telling me to stay on my side... )
Subaru: ...
Yui: ...
Subaru: ...Che! Aah, fuck!
Fine! I just gotta tell you, right!?
...You were...grunting in your sleep last night.
Yui: Eh...?
Subaru: I could hear you suffering all the way over on my side so...
So...I decided to check up on you.
...Got a problem with it?
Yui: Ah...
( So the pain in my chest from last night didn’t just occur in a dream... )
( So that’s why Subaru-kun joined me... )
You were worried about me, weren’t you?
Subaru: Wha...I wasn’t concerned or anythin’...
Yui: Fufu...
Subaru: Fuck! Don’t you dare laugh!
*Thud*
*Rustle*
Yui: Kyah...!?
Don’t pull me by my arm all of a sudden...!
Subaru: Shut up! Let’s get some more sleep.
Yui: Eeh...!?
Subaru: Now shut up and let me hold you...!
*Creaaak*
Yui: ( Geez. We should really hurry and get up though...However... )
( I’m sure he watched over me all night yesterday... )
( I guess just a short nap...should be fine? )
*TIMESKIP*
ー The scene shifts to the main street
Yui: This antique dealer you mentioned yesterday...Do you know where we can find him?
Subaru: Yeah. ...If I’m bein’ honest, I’d rather not get anywhere close to him though...
Yui: Is he that much of an oddball...?
Subaru: Rather than odd...He’s just a plain freak who always finds something to call you out on.
He’s just some stupid old geezer who doesn’t even hold back towards my Old Man.
Yui: Come on, no need to say that...
Subaru: Hmph...
However...He’s probably the only person in the whole Demon World who would dare to defy our dad.
I have to give him credit in that regard.
Yui: Heeh...I see...
( Going against Karlheinz-san...That’s quite the impressive feat... )
( I wonder what kind of person he is...? )
Subaru: I’m pretty sure it’s somewhere around here...
Aah, right here! ...Let’s go in.
ー The scene shifts to Aizen Stahl antique shop
Subaru: ーー Oi, anyone here?
Antique dealer: Hm...?
Ooh! Well if it isn’t the Sakamaki’s little one!
Yui: ( So this man is the antique dealer... )
Antique dealer: You used to be such a wee little fella!
But you’ve scored yourself a girl in the meantime, I see?
Antique dealer: ...Well, seems like she has a bit of a shovel face (1) though.
Yui: A-A shovel face...!?
( How mean... )
Subaru: Che...
...Don’t let it get to your heart. I told you he’s a disgustin’ freak who only knows how to insult others, remember?
Yui: Y-Yeah...
Antique dealer: So? What brings you here today? You sure don’t drop by every day!
Are you here to run an errand on Karlheinz’s behalf? Hehe...
Subaru: I’m not. The Old Man has nothin’ to do with this.
...Do you know Count Walter?
Antique dealer: ...
Subaru: Let’s just say I ended up wreckin’ a few of that guy’s furnishings yesterday.
Antique dealer: ...You did?
Subaru: ...Yeah.
Antique dealer: Hooh...Furnishings which belonged to Walter, huh...?
Heh...Hahaha! Right, I see! You destroyed them!
Splendid!
I have to give you props, little one.
Yui: Eh...?
( He burst out laughing for some reason...!? )
Subaru: O-Oi...?
Antique dealer: I won’t hide it, I loathe that guy.
Yui: You do...?
Antique dealer: Yeah, of course! He actually stole something very precious to me in the past.
Ever since, I’ve had a strong hatred towards him...
So hearing what happened just now made me very pleased.
Yui: ( I see...So that’s his reasoning... )
Antique dealer: I’m pretty sure I should be able to cover for pretty much anything he has in his manor aside from the stuff in his treasure storage?
Subaru: For real!?
Yui: Thank god...!
Antique dealer: If it’s to give that guy a run for his money...I’ll gladly lend you a hand.
What are you looking to replace?
Yui: Vases, sculptures and paintings...
Antique dealer: I see. I might be able to help out then. Wait one second, okay?
ー The antique dealer walks away
Yui: Seems like we might be able to fix things somehow, Subaru-kun...!
Subaru: Yeah, you’re right...
*TIMESKIP*
Antique dealer: Sorry for the wait. What do you think about this?
I assume the items which were destroyed were similar to the ones lined up here?
Subaru: Yeah, pretty much.
Yui: In which case...The Count might just forgive us if we bring him these...!
Subaru: Yeah, thanks for the help. Well thenーー
Antique dealer: Halt!
*SMACK*
Subaru: Ow...! The fuck was that for!?
Antique dealer: I never said you’re gettin’ this for free, did I?
Subaru: Haah!? Weren’t you gonna help us out!?
Antique dealer: If you’re gonna complain to me, then you can forget about getting these!
Subaru: Guh...
...Right! I’ll have the Old Man arrange the money from the human world.
So can’t we make a trade?
Antique dealer: Hmph! I can’t imagine Karlheinz will pay for something like this.
Subaru: ...Ugh...
Yui: Then...What do we have to do to get these...?
Antique dealer: Let’s see...
If you bring me the three items I want, I’d be willing to exchange.
Well, in other words, you two will be my personal servants!
Yui: Servants...
Subaru: Che...It’s a drag...but guess we have no other choice...
ーー Fine. We’ll fetch them for you.
Antique dealer: ...Is that a yes? We have a deal then!
Yui: What should we look for first?
Antique dealer: ...A clown mask. An antique one.
Subaru: Haah!? Why do you want that!?
Antique dealer: Sometimes we just want things without a specific reason, right?
You don’t have to if you don’t want to? Although that also means you won’t be getting any of these.
Subaru: ...I said I’d do it, didn’t I!? I’ll find that crap in no time so just wait here! ...Fuck!
ー The scene shifts to Saint Nore Park venue
Yui: It’s even more crowded than I thought...
Subaru: Yeah...This sucks...
Yui: ( It was to be expected with the ongoing Parade though... )
ーー Ah! But there’s a clown over there! I wonder if some sort of performance will start soon?
( Seems like we made a good decision by coming to the amusement park. Now if we can just ask him about the maskーー )
Vampire Child A: Ah! It’s a clown! Hurry up!
Vampire Child B: Wait for me!
Clown A: Now, now, don’t push!
Yui: ( Wah, he’s really popular...We can’t even get close... )
Subaru: Oi, what are we gonna do now? We can’t get to the clown ‘cause of all these lil’ brats who are in the way.
Yui: Yeah...At this rate, the show will start...
( What now...? )
Clown B: ...What should we do?
Clown C: It’s not like asking that question will get us any further...We’re in quite the pinch...
Yui: ( Hm? Those people over there... )
Say, why don’t we try talking to those two clowns preparing for the show over there?
They seem to be struggling with something...
ー Yui and Subaru approach the clowns
Yui: Excuse me...
Clown B: Yes?
Yui: What’s the matter? Is there a problem of some sorts...?
Clown C: Ah...Well...The clown who was supposed to be the star of today’s show, you see...
He injured himself and can no longer perform...
Vampire Child A: The show’s still not starting!?
Vampire Child B: We’re tired of waiting!
Yui: ( Ah...The children... )
Clown A: ...I don’t think I can buy us any more time! What now!?
Yui: Excuse me! Could we perhaps help out in some way?
Clown B: Eeh!? But...
Subaru: Hah? Oi, you, what are you...!?
Clown C: No...This might work. Even just some help with the fountain show would be much appreciated...
Clown B: ...Now that you mention it...They should probably be able to handle that much...Guess we have no other choice, huh?
Subaru: What are you thinkin’!? There’s just no way we could help out...!?
Yui: I’m sorry for making a rash decision, but...
If we help them out, perhaps they’d be more willing to return the favor afterwards...
Subaru: ...
Clown A: Will you do us this favor?
Subaru: Good point...It’d probably speed things up a little...
...Fine. We’ll do it.
Clown C: Thank you so much! Well then...We’re running short on time, so let’s get straight to it.
Yui: Yes...!
*TIMESKIP*
Clown A: Attention, everyone! The long wait is over!
Clown B: Allow us to take you to a world of dreams and fantasies!
Yui: ( Okay...Let’s give it our best shot...! )
Explanation: Press the arrow keys at the right time, following the instructions on the screen to complete the fountain show.
You can play this game in EASY, NORMAL or HARD mode.
*Clap clap clap*
Yui: ( I suppose...it went well...? )
Vampire Child A: Ohー! Amazing!
Vampire Child B: The fountain was awesome too...!
Clown A: Thank you very much! It was a grand success!
Yui: Really...? We did it, Subaru-kun!
*Rustle*
Subaru: Uwah...!?
Yui: ( Thank god...We pulled it off...! )
Subaru: O-Oi! Move back!
Yui: Eh?
Vampire Child A: Ahー! It’s a couple! They’re dating!!
Vampire Child B: You’re right~! Look at them being all lovey-dovey!
Yui: ...!
( I was so happy, I acted without thinking...! )
Ah, Subaru-kun. This is...You see, I didn’t...!
Vampire Child B: Couple! Couple!
Subaru: Che...Shut your damn mouths!
Vampire Child A: Wahー! He got mad! Let’s make a run for it!!
ー The children run off
Subaru: Fuck...!
Yui: ( Uu...What am I doing...? How embarrassing...! )
I-I’m sorry for doing such a weird thing out of nowhere...!
Subaru: Geez...
Clown C: Gosh, we were only able to hold our show because of you two.
On top of that, it got an even better reaction than we expected!
Clown B: Thank you so much!
Yui: ( I’m glad we managed to help them out. )
*TIMESKIP*
Clown A: ーー Allow me to once again thank you both for your cooperation.
Clown B: Please let us give you something to show our thanks!
Yui: U-Um...Actually, we happen to be looking for something...
ー Subaru shows them an image
Subaru: ーー This is it. Does it ring any bells?
Clown C: This is...
Yui: ( Ah...That picture... )
Subaru: Apparently it’s a clown mask. If you have it, could you give it to us?
Clown A: Ahー ...This is a rather old mask. I just hope we still have one left in the storage...
However, you were such a great help to us earlier, so we’ll try our best to look for it!
Yui: Really!? Thank you so much...!
Clown A: We’ll go search then...Could you wait for us for a while?
Yui: We’re counting on you!
ー The clowns walk away
Yui: Good news, right?
Subaru: I just hope they find it...
Yui: ( ...We’ve got some free time on our hands. What should we do? )
Ah...Say, Subaru-kun? Why don’t we go on some of the rides while we’re here?
Subaru: Aah?
Yui: I’m sure it’d be boring to just stand around waiting...
Subaru: ...Which one do you want to ride?
Yui: Um...Let’s see...Ah, how about the merry-go-round?
Subaru: Haah!? You really think I’m goin’ anywhere near that childish crap!?
Yui: Ah...
( Guess that’s a no...I would have loved to go on a ride together now that we have the chance though... )
Subaru: ...
...Che.
ー Subaru walks away
Yui: Subaru-kun...?
Subaru: ...Why are you spacin’ out over there? Hurry up.
Yui: Eh? ...Hurry for what...?
Subaru: That thing...You want to ride it, right? Then come here before I change my mind.
Yui: ...Yeah!
*TIMESKIP*
Yui: Haah, that was so much fun...!
Subaru: In what world!? ...The only thing I felt was shame!
For one...I was goin’ to sit down in one of the carriages...
But that darn employee...How dare they seat us on one of those stupid horses...!?
I’m sendin’ them flyin’ the next time we meet...!
Yui: ( Well, it was a little embarrassing to ride the horse together... )
I enjoyed riding together with you. Thank you, Subaru-kun.
Subaru: ...
Well...I guess it’s fine if you had fun...But I’m never gettin’ on that thing again!
Clown A: ーー Sorry for the wait!
Yui: Y-You’re the clown from earlier...
Subaru: Did you find it?
Clown A: Well...As we feared, it’s too old of a model so we didn’t have any left in stock.
Subaru: Haah!?
Yui: N-No way...!
Clown A: However, they might still have it over at the dress shop in town!
Yui: Dress shop...
( I suppose we should try heading there then. )
Thank you for the valuable piece of information. We’ll try our luck there next.
Clown A: Yes. Be careful...!
ー The scene shifts to Aizen Alleyway
Subaru: ーー So where’s this dress shop?
Yui: Yeah...According to the map we received earlier, it should be around here.
I suppose it could be that place attracting a crowd over there...?
Subaru: A crowd...? I’ve had enough of those.
Yui: Ahaha, right...
( However, is this bad hunch just overthinking on my part...? )
ー They enter the dress shop
Yui: ...
Subaru: ...
Why is it this crowded in here as well...!?
Yui: Y-Yeah...
( The bad feeling I had became reality...! )
Um...Excuse me. Is something going to happen here?
Female Vampire A: Yes. The fashion show is about to start.
Yui: Fashion show!?
If their show is about to start, I’m sure the staff will be busy...
Subaru: Yeah...This crowd is getting on my nerves as well. Let’s wait somewhere else till it’s over.
Yui: Yeah...Guess we should...
( I’m kind of curious what a fashion show in the Demon World looks like thoughーー )
???: Ah! Hey! Wait, you!
Subaru: Aah?
Yui: ( Hm...? )
???: Come with me, please!
ー She pulls Subaru along
*Rustle*
Subaru: Aah!? The fuck do you want all of a sudden!?
Dress shop owner: I’m the owner of this place! I’ll explain the details in the back, just come with me for now!
*Rustle*
Subaru: Oi, wait!
Yui: Ah, hey...!
( What is going on...? Guess I’ll follow them for now... )
ー The scene shifts to the changing room
Yui: ( We were taken to the back of the store... )
Dress shop owner: I’m sorry this is a little sudden, but could you please change into this outfit?
Subaru: Haah!? This is more than ‘a little’ sudden! The fuck do you want!?
Dress shop owner: ...Right. I suppose I was a little too pushy...
We’re actually about to get started with our fashion show...
However, I’ve been in quite the pinch since I was unable to find a model to wear my best creation.
We did find a substitute, but they just don’t fit the image I have in mind.
Then you appeared in front of me! You’re the perfect fit!
Yui: ( Subaru-kun...A model... )
Subaru: Fuck off! You must be mental if you think I’m doin’ that shit!
Dress shop owner: Oh no! I will have you be my model!
I’m sure my clothes would be overjoyed to be worn by you as well!
Subaru: Hmph, bullshit. Oi, we’re leavin’.
ー Subaru starts walking away
Yui: Ah, but...
( We have to ask her about the mask... )
( And above all... )
( I’m very much interested in seeing Subaru-kun take part in a fashion show...! )
Say, Subaru-kun...Why not take this opportunity to participate?
Subaru: Aah!? Have you hit your head as well!?
Yui: ...Oh come on, please?
Also...Lend me your ear for a bit?
Subaru: Aah?
*Rustle*
Yui: It might be a good chance to ask about the mask...!
Subaru: ...
Dress shop owner: I don’t know what you’re whispering about but...
I’d like to ask you for your cooperation as well. I’m convinced you’ll be the best model for this outfit!
Subaru: ...
...Gimme that. I’ll go change.
*Rustle*
Yui: Subaru-kun...!
Dress shop owner: Oh my! Thank you so much! This way, please!
Yui: ( I can’t wait to see what it’ll look like...! )
*TIMESKIP*
ー The scene shifts to the main street
*Snap snap*
Yui: ( All of the models have such great figures. (2) I can only dream to look like that... )
( I wonder when it’ll be Subaru-kun’s turn...? )
Dress shop owner: Well then, to wrap up the show, we have none other than my pride and joy!
Yui: ( Ah, there he is...! )
*Snap snap snap*
Monologue
Subaru-kun’s appearance as he set foot on the stage,
was so handsome,
he made the whole crowd swoon.
...He did seem somewhat grumpy though.
Perhaps it’s due to the different style of clothes,
but it felt refreshing to me.
Standing next to him,
was the shop clerk from earlierーー
who looked equally stunning.
However...I could not help but grow a little curious,
as this seemingly picture-perfect duo,
seemed to be whispering something to each other.
Dress shop owner: Just look at how ecstatic everyone is...!
Come on, you should wave at the crowd as well!
Translation notes
(1) In Japanese, he calls her チンクシャ or ‘chinkusha’, which is a very rude term used to describe women who have a flat/small nose and are therefore considered ugly.
I looked up similar slang terms in English and ‘shovel face’ seemed like the best fit.
(2) スタイルがいい or ‘style ga ii’ actually refers more to someone’s body type/figure, rather than their fashion style, even when talking about models.
(3) Literally he says that he has already been booked, using the word 予約 or ‘yoyaku’, which you would also use when booking a hotel room or a restaurant.
Partners
Characters: Petra Ral, Levi, Hanji Zoe x Levi Genre: Action / Mystery / Romance Rating: T
Detective!au
Summary: when Petra was promoted to a detective and partnered up with legendary Levi Ackerman, she felt like the happiest person in the world.
But, as she soon found out, detective Ackerman she used to admire so much was actually a far cry from the ideal policeman Petra thought he was. He was rude, harsh and easily annoyed. And, in addition, he still hadn’t moved on from the death of his previous partner - detective Hange Zoe.
Chapter 4/?
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Сhapter 3
Petra was standing in front of a coffee machine, trying to choose between latte and cappuccino. She almost pressed on a button with latte written on it, when a hand, which fell heavily on her shoulder, stopped her.
"Goodness, don't even think of buying coffee there!"
Startled, Petra whirled around. She gasped as she saw Captain Erwin standing in front of her.
"Am I... not allowed to buy coffee here?"
Was there some unspoken rule that newly promoted detectives couldn't take coffee from the precinct's coffee machine? Was she overstepping some line?
For a second, Captain Erwin's eyebrows drew together in confusion. But then his lips curved into a smile, as he let out a soft chuckle.
"Oh no, no, of course, you're allowed to order coffee there," he assured her. "But you really shouldn't. In Levi's words," he scowled, trying to mimic Levi's annoyed expression. Petra couldn't resist a giggle - Captain Erwin's impression was spot on. "It tastes worse than horse's piss."
Petra covered her mouth with two hands, stifling her laughter.
Captain raised his arms in a placating gesture. "His words, not mine. But it's truly awful. C'mon," he turned around and started walking, beckoning Petra to do the same. "I'll make you a better one."
***
As Captain was busy with preparing coffee, Petra couldn’t help, but look around his office. The office wasn’t big or spacious, but it was brightly lit and tidy. There wasn’t much inside, only a bookshelf, filled with case files and diplomas, a small leather coach and simple wooden desk. The desk, for some reason, attracted the most of Petra’s attention. It didn’t look different from her own, the same computer model, the same table lamp, however… there was a photo frame standing beside computer screen. She couldn’t see, who was pictured there, but she found it curious and a little strange nevertheless. She would have never guessed that Captain had a family. He didn’t seem the type.
"Here you go," Erwin placed a cup in front of Petra. She took it with two hands, lifting it up and inhaling a deep, bitter aroma. It smelled perfect. She brought it to her lips, taking a first sip. Oh. Not only it smelled perfect, it tasted perfect too. She couldn't keep in a small moan of satisfaction that escaped her lips, as the hot liquid made its way down her throat.
Erwin watched her with amused eyes.
"Thank you," Petra smiled sheepishly, blushing slightly, as she put the cup down. "It's the best coffee I've had in weeks."
"My pleasure," Erwin smiled back, drinking from his own cup.
Petra fidgeted. Captain’s expression was relaxed, but those bright blue eyes were so intense, she felt like he was staring into her soul. Why did he even call her there? Surely not just for coffee.
"C-captain?" Petra gripped the cup in her hands tighter. "Did you invite me there for any particular reason?"
"I wanted you to enjoy a nice cup of coffee," Erwin put the cup down and rested his chin on top of his hands. His eyes stared at her, following the smallest of her moves. "And to talk with you. How is the case going?"
"Um..." Petra swallowed, feeling uneasy. "It's, um, going."
Erwin slightly raised his eyebrow, but didn't push the matter further.
“Levi asked for a day-off tomorrow,” he said. “Would you be able to hold on without him? I know you’ve just been promoted a—”
“No, it’s fine!” Petra assured him eagerly. Of course, the prospect of surviving the shift without her more experienced partner was a more than a little worrying. But after what she had seen today in the interrogation room, maybe, it was for the best if Levi spent some time at home.
"Speaking of Levi,” Erwin began. “Does he give you any trouble?"
"Of course, not!" Petra exclaimed with way too much vigor.
Erwin smirked, raising an eyebrow higher. "Is that really so?"
Petra deflated, casting her eyes down. "Detective Levi is a great professional and I—"
"Petra," Erwin cut her off. "Levi won't get in trouble with me, don't worry. I'm asking as his friend, not as his superior."
"As his friend..." Petra whispered.
"Yes," Erwin nodded. "So if there's something I should know, please tell me. God knows, Levi would never tell me if something bothered him."
"I..." Petra nervously tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "I think you should take him off this case. It's clearly too personal for Levi."
"Hm, maybe, you're right," Erwin scratched his chin. "I knew that appointing him to this case would cause some problems..."
"Then why did you? Give him this case?"
Erwin shrugged. "I wanted to see his reaction. To see if he had truly moved on from Hange's death."
That was... that was heartless. But as she stared at Captain's face, she didn't see the cold calculation or simple indifference in his eyes. Only uncertainty and worry. Maybe, it was his weird way of caring about his friend.
"You knew from the beginning, right?" she asked quietly. "That this case would involve detective Zoe?"
"I had a feeling," Erwin agreed. "The murder happened in the same apartment complex she used to live in, after all. Hardly could be a coincidence."
Right... so that's why the witness had recognized Levi. Did he really share an apartment with his partner?
"Forgive my bluntness...” she cleared her throat, gathering all of her courage to maintain a direct eye contact with Captain. “But what was the nature of Levi and detective Zoe's relationship?"
"They were partners," Erwin answered, his jaw set. "In every possible sense of that word.”
“Oh,” if before Petra’s cheeks were rosy, now they turned almost crimson read. She felt stupid for asking such a personal question. Clearly, her partner wasn’t the only one, who was still affected by detective Zoe’s death. “I shouldn’t have asked, I’m so sorry…”
“It’s nothing,” Erwin waved her off. “Levi isn’t the most open of people, so I understand the desire to… get to know him better.”
Petra nodded, although Captain’s words didn’t really help her understand anything. It also didn’t really make Levi’s story any clearer. She still couldn’t piece together what kind of bound existed between Levi and detective Zoe. They clearly were much more than just colleagues. Definitely more than just friends, too. Maybe, they were dating? Or even married? There were many ways in which the world ‘partner’ could be interpreted. Maybe, that’s exactly why Captain Erwin used it.
"By the way, did you finish questioning the witness?" Erwin asked, bringing her back to the present.
"We did," Petra replied, avoiding his gaze. The recent incident in the interrogation room still hung heavily over her head.
"I assume it didn't go that well," Erwin noted.
Petra sighed. "The man that the witness described.... Didn't fit the description of Zeke Yeager."
Erwin covered his eyes with a hand. "So he really is pursuing that theory..." he glanced up at Petra. "What was the description given to you by the witness?"
"Um, according to him, the killer is a tall man with brown and curly hair."
"And what makes you think he described a killer?"
"Huh?"
Erwin straightened out. "Are you absolutely sure that the man that the witness saw was a killer?"
"He went with the victim to her apartment..."
"But we can't know for sure if he was the one to kill her," Erwin said resolutely. "Did the witness say how that man left the building?"
"He finished his shift earlier," Petra answered, feeling more and more confused with each passing moment. “Do you think that someone else killed her?”
“I’m not stating anything,” Erwin replied, evasive as always. “I’m just saying that you can’t be too sure in any of your theories until you actually get some evidence. It narrows your scope.”
“A-aha,” now Petra got it. “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains must be the truth and all that, right?”
“Yes,” Erwin smiled widely. “Remember these words and you’ll do great at your job.”
“Thank you for the advice,” Petra smiled briefly, before furrowing her eyebrows. Something in Erwin’s words bothered her. Could it be that…
“Captain, do you… do you also think that it was Zeke Yeager, who killed that woman?”
Erwin didn’t answer immediately.
“I know it seems weird for you,” he began with self-deprecating smile. “And I know that Levi may seem like he’s obsessed with catching Zeke, and, maybe, he really is, but… You didn’t know Zeke. He was smart. Very smart. And he liked playing with people. I’m not saying that he’s alive, I’ve seen evidence that very much proved the opposite, but the fact that he’s somewhat involved in that murder is certain. The glasses belonged to Hange, and the blood was hers too. Who else could have gotten it? It’s either one of Zeke’s henchmen, maybe, someone, who seeks revenge for his death, or…” he trailed off, shrugging.
“But the description didn’t match!” Petra tried to argue.
“Wigs exist,” Erwin said simply.
Petra hanged her head. She wanted to protest, wanted to come up with some argument that would destroy this whole outlandish theory. Unfortunately, if Levi and Erwin kept overlooking one small fact that Zeke had died two years ago, she doubted there was anything that would be able to dissuade them.
“Oh, shoot!” Erwin suddenly exclaimed, glancing at his wrist watch. “I’m almost late to a very important meeting!” he got to his feet, gathering the papers on his desk. “Thank you for the company, Petra.”
“The pleasure was all mine,” she smiled prettily, even though her head was still reeling from their conversation.
“Good luck with your case,” Erwin said, as he followed Petra out of his office. “And look over Levi for me, okay? If anything happens, you know where to find me.”
He gave her one last smile and then hurried away. Petra stared at his wide back for a second, and then she pulled herself together, turning around and heading towards her office.
It was about time she got some actual work done.
***
To her surprise, when Petra had entered their office, it turned out that Levi wasn't there. She glanced to the side, his coat wasn't hanging on the clothes rack. However... his computer was on, the screen burning brightly in the otherwise dark room.
Petra couldn't take her eyes off that computer. She remembered her first day at work (it seemed almost surreal that it was only yesterday, it felt like weeks has passed) and how Levi was so focused on his computer, as though whatever was on his screen was the most important thing in the world. She remembered her desire to find out what was he working on.
She stepped further into the room, wondering where Levi was right now. He promised Moblit he'd visit the forensics department, maybe, he was there? But why would he need his coat for? And why didn't he turn off his computer?
Petra took another step, her eyes darting to the desk next to Levi's. Detective Zoe's desk. It was a little different than yesterday.
There was... There was a pair of glasses lying atop one of the reports. The same glasses they found on the scene of crime, Petra realized, as she saw a crack running through the left lens. But the blood was gone. Whoever cleaned them, did a real good job. Petra had a feeling she knew one particular person, who liked keeping things clean and tidy.
She felt a lump form inside her throat. Two years had passed, and Levi still didn't give up on her, hoping that one day she would come back. Petra couldn't decide if she should admire his loyalty or pity his naivety.
Either way, she hurriedly turned away from that desk. It made her feel melancholic and more than a little depressed.
If the glasses were there, it meant that Levi had already visited Moblit and his team. Where was he now? How much time did she have?
Glancing back, as if to check that Levi wasn't coming back this instant, Petra took a deep breath. And then she swiftly sat down at his desk.
Moving the cursor, she studied his desktop. There wasn’t much on it, just a few folders. She ignored the ones with the obvious contents – the ones named ‘cases’ and ‘reports’. Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion as she saw the folder with a name ‘that fucking asshole’, she almost clicked on it, but then she saw another folder. This one was named ‘Sannes’, and Petra’s breath hitched, as she remembered Levi asking her about him. Could it be… could it be that this folder contained some evidence? The one that could back up Levi’s claim about Sannes’ involvement with criminal underworld? Feeling her pulse fasten, Petra opened the folder.
Well, she tried to open it, because as soon as she clicked on the folder, a new tab opened, requesting a password.
She cursed.
Petra tipped her head back, thinking. What could a man like Levi use as his password?
She typed four zeros and then pressed enter.
‘The password is incorrect. Please try again.’
Of course, it was too naïve to hope that Levi would use something as generic as this. But Petra wasn’t going to give up so soon. She opened the first drawer of his desk, trying to find something that would give her some sort of idea. Petra grinned as she found the old driver license. It was expired, but in the corner Levi’s birth date was written.
Bingo.
She quickly wrote the numbers and pressed enter, her hands slightly trembling in anticipation of seeing what was inside that folder.
‘The password is incorrect. Please try again.’
Shit. Closing the first drawer, she opened the second. She rummaged through it for a couple of moments, but found nothing, except old autopsy and ballistic reports. Petra groaned – she was starting to get desperate. She closed the second drawer with more force than was necessary, opening the third one. The last one.
It was empty, except— Except an old, tattered photo. Three people were pictured there – Petra immediately recognized Captain Erwin and Levi, even though they looked much younger. A bespectacled woman stood between them, her hands wrapped around both of their shoulders. It must be detective Zoe, Petra guessed, looking at the woman’s wide grin. Detective Zoe wasn’t the only one smiling – there was a delighted beam on Captain Erwin’s lips as well, and even Levi, as weird as it looked, was wearing a small, but satisfied smile.
They looked so joyous here, so… so happy. And now one of them was dead, and two others suffered heavily because of that loss.
She turned the photo around. There was something written on the other side.
The only time, when your face didn’t look so constipated, shorty! Keep it as a reminder
“Shorty?” Petra gasped, rereading the small note again. She would never dare to call Levi like that. Most people probably wouldn’t. Hange Zoe was clearly an exception. And it was obvious that Levi took her advice of keeping the photo to heart, the picture looked worn out, as though it was frequently held and looked at.
Shaking head, she tried to regain her focus. She didn’t come here to go through Levi’s stuff. Well, technically, that was exactly what she was doing right now, but she really didn’t mean to pry into his personal life. She did it more than enough today. She needed to guess his password, and, unfortunately, that photo didn’t help her in the least.
But what if…
Biting her lip, Petra bent over the keyboard. She almost finished typing ‘HangeZoe’, when the door handle began to rattle.
Petra jumped in her seat, frantically closing the password window on the screen and hiding the photo back inside the drawer. She wasn’t quick enough to get to her feet, though, the door began to open, as Petra erratically tried to think of some excuse to explain, what she was doing behind Levi’s desk, but nothing was good enough. She could quite clearly picture his furious expression, she already wanted to start apologizing, but then the door was opened completely.
And Petra saw Oluo, standing on the threshold.
“Goddamn it!” she cried out, heart still thumping way too loudly inside her chest. “You scared the shit out of me!”
Oluo frowned. “I have never heard you curse before. And, by the way, isn’t that detective Ackerman’s desk?”
“What are you doing here?” she asked instead, ignoring his last question.
Oluo rolled his eyes arrogantly, all signs of his previous suspicion gone. Petra felt warmth spread through her chest at the sight of his annoying face. Never would she guess, but she missed Oluo terribly.
“Someone wants to see you,” he replied, leaning against the wall. “So finish whatever you were doing at detective Ackerman’s desk and let’s go.”
“Someone?” Petra blinked in surprise. “Who?”
“Djel Sannes,” Oluo told her with puffed out chest. He was clearly proud to receive a command from such important man. “Deputy police chief.”
The folder at Levi’s computer immediately appeared in Petra’s mind. She couldn’t open it and see, what his partner found so suspicious about that man. But, maybe, she could investigate it herself.
She got to her feet, adjusting her blouse and skirt.
“Let’s go then,” she joined Oluo at the doorstep. “Can’t make him wait, right?”
***
As they were walking through the precinct’s corridors, Oluo didn’t take his eyes off her even for a second.
“Do I have something on my face?” Petra snapped, feeling uneasy under his gaze.
Oluo hurriedly looked away, his cheeks reddening ever so slightly. “No, of course, you don’t.”
“Then what’s the matter? You’ve been staring at me like I’ve grown a second head or something.”
“You look just fine,” Oluo huffed, still refusing to meet her eyes. “It’s just… you’ve changed.”
“Changed?” Petra let out a surprised chuckle. “People don’t change over a day, dummy.”
“Maybe, change isn’t the right word then, but…” he scowled, annoyed with his inability to express himself clearly. “You carry yourself with more confidence now and at the same time… you look more troubled than I’ve ever seen you.”
Well, she wasn’t sure about her newfound confidence, she felt nothing of the sort, but troubled? That was a vast understatement.
“A lot of stuff happened over these two days.”
“Want to talk about it?”
Oluo’s soft voice caught her off-guard. Petra glanced at him. Oluo was looking back. There was no amusement in his eyes, and his usual smirk was absent as well. He genuinely wanted to help her, Petra realized with a start.
“Yes,” she answered him after a moment, “I would love to talk about it,” she paused, staring straight in Oluo’s eyes. “With you.”
“Oh,” Oluo stopped abruptly, nearly colliding with someone. Petra giggled into her palm. He looked so flabbergasted. To Oluo’s credit, however, it took him only a few seconds to regain his posture. “I k-know a place!” he exclaimed loudly. “I found a new restaurant near the precinct, the food is delicious and it’s really nice p—”
“Alright,” Petra cut him off, still chuckling. “Let’s visit it tomorrow evening. If that works for you?”
“O-of course!”
“Great,” she patted his shoulder, before leaning in to press her lips to his cheek. “Then it’s a date,” she whispered into Oluo’s ear, before walking away, leaving him to stare after her with a dazed smile on his face.
Petra turned the corner and there it was. The door to Djel Sannes’ office. It looked the same as all doors in precinct looked – a sturdy, wooden door. Nothing unusual about it, and yet— and yet Petra’s palms were sweaty. Her heart was beating faster than usual too. Logically, she knew there was nothing to be afraid of, it was just a visit to her superior’s office. She talked with Captain Erwin earlier, and it wasn’t nerve-wracking at all. She would even call it pleasant. And she wasn’t even sure, if there was something wrong with deputy police chief, she had never met him after all. The only thing she knew is that Levi didn’t trust him, but Levi also believed that people, who had died two years ago in the explosion, were alive. His opinion clearly wasn’t the most reliable.
She just needed to get a grip on herself. What had Oluo said to her? She carried herself with more confidence? Well, maybe, the time has come to prove it.
Petra took a deep, calming breath and raised her hand, knocking on the door.
“Come in!” came a deep, booming voice from the other side of the door.
Petra took another breath, and then. She walked in.
***
Deputy police chief’s office, as it turned out, wasn’t much different from Captain Erwin’s. It was a little bigger and his desk was a little fancier, but otherwise it was the same type of office every high-ranked policemen had.
Djel Sannes himself didn’t look as scary as Petra imagined. He looked kind of plain, actually. He was a middle aged man with wide shoulders, neat haircut and clean-shaved face. There were more than a hundred men like him in their precinct.
Petra’s heart rate slowed down a little.
“Detective Ral!” Sannes spread his hands in a welcoming gesture. “I was waiting for you!”
Petra put on a polite smile, sitting down on the opposite side of his desk. “It is an honor, sir. Do you wish to discuss something?”
“Just welcome you on your new position. You’ve been a detective for…”
“Two days,” Petra answered.
“Exactly!” Sannes snapped his fingers. “And we’re seeing each other only now,” he cocked his head to the side, looking at Petra. His expression was still easy, friendly, but his eyes became sharper. Colder. “You’ve been busy, I’ve heard.”
“We were appointed a new case tonight,” Petra nodded, pointedly ignoring the sudden change in Sannes. It was probably her nerves getting to her.
“Yes, a woman was murdered. Do you have any clue who had done it?”
“We are working on it.” Petra said with much more confidence than she actually felt.
“Good, good,” her false bravado had either gone unnoticed by Sannes, or he simply didn’t care enough to call her out on it. “And what about your partner? Detective Ackerman?”
“Um… what about him?”
“I know that man,” Sannes said offhandedly. “To put it mildly… he’s not the easiest person to deal with. Is he bothering you? If he is, don’t hesitate to tell me, I’ll appoint a new partner for you.”
“No, no,” Petra waved her hands. “Detective Ackerman is a very skilled detective. I like working with him.”
Sannes gave her a very skeptic look. “Is that really so? I find it hard to believe, actually.”
He reached over to the drawer, opening it and taking out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. He lit a cigarette, inhaling deeply and sitting back in a chair.
“Do you smoke?” he asked Petra, offering her a cigarette.
She silently shook her head. Smoking inside the precinct was prohibited. But obviously Petra decided not to say it out loud.
“I should have fired that man a long time ago,” Sannes took another drag. “I would have done it, if Smith wasn’t so overprotective of him. He always had a soft spot for Ackerman. For him and that partner of his. Surely you’ve heard about her already?” he glanced at Petra, shaking out the ash into the ashtray. “Detective Hange Zoe,” the distain in his voice was so clear, Petra felt uncomfortable. “Between you and me, that woman got what she deserved. She was hot-headed and reckless, and in the end, that’s exactly what had gotten her killed.”
Petra wondered if Sannes had ever shared his thoughts on the matter with Levi. Sannes’ nose didn’t look like it was ever broken and Levi still worked as a detective, so she guessed they never had that particular conversation.
“But you’re not like them,” Sannes said. “You’re not a scheming bastard like Smith, you don’t put your nose where it doesn’t belong to like that Zoe did, and obviously you’re not a psychopath like Ackerman. I like you, Ral,” he grinned approvingly. “We should work together.”
“T-together?”
“Yes,” he nodded. “You help me and I help you.”
Petra honestly couldn’t believe her ears. So Levi was right after all. Although, she still had not even a hint of his connection to criminals, there was no doubt that Djel Sannes, deputy police chief, was a corrupt and malicious man. And it meant that Petra had to choose her words very, very carefully. She couldn’t let him know that she wasn’t on his side.
“And… what do you need my help with, sir?”
“Oh, not much,” Sannes put out his cigarette, the smug smile still present on his face. “Just keep an eye on your partner. If he does something suspicious… well,” he let out a small chuckle. “You know where to find me.”
“That I do,” Petra nodded with a smile she put on to mask her disgust. “Is that everything you’ve wanted to talk about?”
“Yes, that’s all,” he waved his hand carelessly. “You may go, but,” he gave Petra another careful look. “I’ll be expecting to hear from you, Ral.”
“Of course, sir,” she raised to her feet. “I’ll try not to disappoint.”
It was only when Petra was inside her office that she could finally breathe out in relief. With each passing hour, her life was getting more and more complicated. She would never expect deputy police chief to ask her to spy on her partner.
Speaking of which… where was Levi? She hadn’t seen him all day.
Petra’s eyes darted to his computer, but she quickly changed her mind. She had more than enough revelations for one day. She was tired to the bone, too. She glanced at the clock – it was already past six, which meant her shift was finally over.
Grabbing her bag and coat, Petra hurriedly left the precinct. She had a crazy day.
And something told her – tomorrow would be no better.
cheaters never prosper || ch. 2
Past Steve Rogers x Reader, Sam Wilson x Reader
summary || request for part 2 on AO3! After Steve signs the diverse papers, you're finally ready to move on. But Steve isn't. Based on the song “Purple Rain” by Prince.
author’s note || Again, sorry to the Sharon fans! To be honest, this is happier than I intended but it’s basically Steve owning up to his mistakes and the reader being happy again. Hope you all enjoy it!
P.S. I will not write a version with a happy ending with Steve, he was borderline physiologically abusive and was neglecting that ended up greatly affecting the reader’s mental health and trust in relationships. I honestly made it happier than it should’ve been.
warning || angst, cheating, swearing, fluff
m.list // ch. 1
I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
Steve sighed and put down his pen. He couldn’t sign it. Early that day, you had sent him something in the mail. To say his heart dropped into his stomach was an understatement. He practically ripped open the mail in half to just have divorce papers scream in his face. Tears pricked his eyes as he read the statements on the papers over and over again.
He really wanted to make amends but how could he do that? He lost your trust. He called you names. He was a hypocrite and blamed himself on you. He left you time after time alone, feeling unwanted and broken. He didn’t deserve your time.
Your forgiveness.
And if he was being honest with himself? His relationship with Sharon wasn’t going so well. She would yell at him for being distant and cold. He would yell at her for the cause of the downfall of his relationship and being clingy as fuck. He couldn’t help but always think, she’s not her.
He knew she was going to leave soon and she should. They want different things. She wanted a family. A house located far away from the bustling city. And what did he want? He just wanted you. But he knew he couldn’t have you. He had to move on like you were trying to do. Your relationship was just another bump in the road of life and you both could move on.
So, Steve picked up his phone and dialed your number. He figured you weren’t going to answer. The rings blared through his ear while he bounced his leg up and down.
You answered the phone, sounding groggy.
“Hello?”
Steve swallowed the lump in his throat. “Oh, I-I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you-”
“Rogers, are you okay?” He swallowed thickly, mouth seemingly dry as ever.
“U-um, yeah. I- Is it okay if we meet up? Just to talk! I don’t like the way things ended and I didn’t want to sign the papers until-” He paused, taking a breath. “Until we made things somewhat amicable.” To his surprise, you agreed.
You didn’t want every memory of this relationship to be the days he missed. The days he left you sitting there alone. The days he would yell at you for accusing him of cheating, regardless of you both already knowing the answer. You wanted some kind of closure so you can move on.
I only wanted to see you
Underneath the purple rain
You both had agreed to meet at a coffee shop. You didn’t really want to do this if you were being honest. Steve cheated. He spun around his mistakes onto yours. He made himself the victim when you left. He ruined the safety and security of a relationship. He ruined you. The man you loved, cared for and practically worshipped had completely destroyed you.
Bucky and Nat were honestly scared for weeks because you refused to eat or leave their apartment unless it was for work. You told Fury to transfer you to an office in Manhattan instead of being at the compound in upstate. You couldn’t handle seeing Steve with her, happy. You were at the lowest stage of healing so you knew that you couldn’t bear to see him.
You sat down at an empty table, checking your phone and aimlessly scrolling. You heard the bell on the door ding. Steve sauntered in, taking a seat in front of you. He took the papers out of his bag and set them on the table.
You opened your mouth to speak but he stopped you. “I can’t begin to describe how sorry I am for everything. For pushing all of my problems onto you, for accusing you, and for cheating. Honesty, I can go on and on. When it happened, I should’ve told you. I know I shouldn’t have done it at all but… It happened. And I should’ve told you.” Tears pricked his eyes. “But, I-I just…” He paused, raking his hands through his hair. “I want to know if you’re still going to be in my life. I want to k-know if we can at least be friends. I...I can’t l-lose you completely I-”
You sigh, not ready to say what you need to say. “Steve, I don’t know if I can ever be friends with you. It’s going take a long time for me to heal and I think you will need that too.” His head sunk but he nodded, understanding your position. You look at him with eyes glossing over.
“I...I’m not saying it won’t ever happen but Steve, you hurt me. Destroyed me. Destroyed a life that I thought I was going to have for the rest of my life. And then it felt like you were just rubbing it in my face at the club one night. Healing from this won’t just be overnight.” He nodded, knowing that this was for the best. And who knows? Maybe one day, years from now, you’ll be good friends.
He picked up the pen from his bag, sighing his name on the dotted line, and gently scooting the paper towards you.
He smiled but you could tell it wasn’t true. “Goodbye, Rogers.” “Goodbye, Y/N.”
I think you better close it
And let me guide you to purple rain
Sam had been very understanding. You both agreed to take things slow. You had contacted him about 4 months after signing the divorce papers. You were finally training yourself to be happy. However, sometimes the remembrance of the past haunts your mind.
How can you trust Sam?
How do you know he won’t break your heart?
What if he cheats on you? What if he’s being unfaithful right now?
How can he just stay with you? You’re making him wait, for fuck’s sake!
Tears had rolled down your cheeks while you just shook your head. You knew Sam wouldn’t do that. He wasn’t Steve. You were so frustrated. Frustrated at Steve. Frustrated at yourself. Frustrated at life.
You didn’t want Sam to go through this kind of shit. He was too good and too pure for his own good. He was an absolute saint and waited for you. He had waited for you to be ready to date again. You were sobbing on your couch and a half-empty wine bottle on the coffee table that you were sipping on. You wanted to trust Sam so badly but how can you? You’ve only been together for 4 months.
Sam walked into your apartment, “What’s up, buttercup?” But then his heart clenched. You didn’t even hear him come in, you were too lost in your mind. He leaned down in front of you and caressed your face with his palm. “Sam?” You whimpered. His heart shattered. How can someone do this? How can someone break this wonderful beautiful person like this?
“Baby, it’s okay.” You shook your head as Sam wrapped you into his arms. “Why did you wait for me, Sam? Why are you here?” He sighed, lacing his fingers through your hair, fiddling with the strands.
“Because you’re worth it. And I won’t let you tell yourself otherwise.” You sniffled. “I am?” He gave forehead kisses after each word. You’re beautiful, astonishing, strong, independent, energetic, sexy, confident, compassionate, captivating, and babe, I could go on and on.” You giggled, leaning closer into him.
“Sometimes, I just feel like I’m holding you back. Like, if I keep waiting for myself to heal, you’ll run away.” He turned to you, cupping your cheeks so you had to look at him. “I will wait 400 years if I have to, Y/N. And honey, that’s a long ass time.” You giggled, sniffling at the end. So that’s what he did. He waited and guided you into pure bliss.
I only wanted to be some kind of friend
Baby, I could never steal you from another
Today you told the team you had something special for them to see. You were going to introduce Sam to the team. He had taken you to the cutest cafe in Little Italy and you decided it was time to show him off. You pushed the 4th-floor button on the elevator as Sam was practically shaking with nerves.
“Babe, I am so nervous. You guys are the fucking avengers!” You laughed, squeezing his hands that were laced with yours. “You’ll be fine.” You gave him a little wink. “They’ll love you.” The doors opened in front of you and you both started talking towards the common area.
“Hey, guys!” They all greet you back. You noticed Sharon and Steve were cuddling up on the couch. Although, Steve had an unreadable expression on his face.
Nat speaks up first. “Who’s the hot date?” Sam grinned at you. “Guys, this is Sam. Sam, this is the team.” You end up introducing him to each and everyone, even Fury. And they all were very polite—your surprise.
“So this is the man that Y/N gushes all the time, huh?” You immediately became flustered. “Shut up, Tony.” Sam settled a smirk right on top of his handsome face. “So you talk about me, huh?” Your eyed widened. “What? Uh, no. I, uh, I just talk about how you’re a pain in my ass.” He playfully rolled his eyes. “Oh surree, you do, sweets. Sure.” You squeezed his arm making him send a playful glare in your direction.
“Jesus you guys are so grossly cute.”
“Whatever, Clint, you’re just jealous.” He rolled his eyes at you but none the less smiled.
You both stayed and had dinner with the Team when Tony offered. That night, it was Bruce’s turn to cook. He had made his mother’s spaghetti and you couldn’t pass it up. You had missed nights like those with the team.
You looked around at the dinner table, everyone laughing their asses off at something Sam said while Bucky just huffed and crossed his arms. He had undoubtedly made fun of something Bucky had done or said.
You watched Nat coo at Bucky, making sure his ego was hurt just a little bit more. Clint and Tony were practically on the ground from laughing so hard. Peter and Thor just sat there oblivious to everything. They just looked like happy puppies that were glad to be involved.
Lastly, your eyes landed on Steve but his eyes were already looking at yours. You looked at him with a calm stare. His heart clenched as he saw it. You looked at him differently. It wasn’t filled with an everlasting love but with tranquility. You could feel Sharon’s stare so you fixated your eyes on hers as well. She held the scowl but you had nothing against her. Not anymore, at least.
You had somebody who sincerely loved you and you absolutely loved him back. So, you smiled. You smiled effervescently at her which was met with her surprised face.
You turned, Sam’s eyes meeting yours. “Everything good?” You nodded, interlacing your hand with his. Then Steve saw it. Your teeth showing smile, your shimmering eyes every time they landed on Sam, and your elevated heart rate. You were in love with Sam. You were happy, without Steve.
Sharon yelled at him when he excused himself from the table but he couldn’t care less. Bucky came and knocked on the door but he locked himself in his room with his heads in his hands. He couldn’t bear to see you. He couldn’t bear to see you moved on.
But he doesn’t owe you that. If anything, he owes you that happiness.
It’s time we all reach out
For something new, that means you too
It had been a couple of years since you both filed for a divorce and you seemed pretty happy with Sam. You hadn’t talked to Steve, only muttering quick hellos and goodbyes when you transferred back to the compound.
So when you had invited Steve to your wedding his eyebrows could’ve fallen off they went so high. He then yelped in surprise when he saw an invitation for Sharon too. He didn’t think that an ex-husband should probably go to his ex-wife’s wedding where he completely destroyed the marriage. He also didn’t think that you would invite your ex-husband’s girlfriend that he cheated on you with. But regardless, he immediately sent an RSVP.
He arrived at the venue, suit and tie in all. He walked over awkwardly to grab a punch from the free bar. “Hey, punk.” Bucky slapped a hand on his shoulder. “Glad you could make it.” Steve nodded solemnly when Nat had furrowed eyebrows. “Where’s Sharon?” Steve shook his head. “We broke up.” Nat’s mouth formed into an ‘o’ and Bucky patted Steve’s shoulder in comfort.
Then, Steve had spotted you. You had looked iridescent. Your face just glowed with pride. Your dress flowed down making you look like a princess and your heels clacked onto the ground. Your wedding with Steve was smaller and had fewer people because you knew crowds made him uneasy. This wedding, on the other hand, was huge and classy and exuberant. Steve had always teased you for your dream wedding.
He noticed that Sam was nowhere to be found but you made a joke to Bucky and Nat about locking him in a room with Tony and Clint. Steve chuckled, you were always a sucker for wedding traditions. “Steve!” You went to side hug him, a vivacious grin on your face. “It’s so good to see you! So, I can see you’ve gotten some refreshments and I’ll guide you to your table!” You both made small talk as you guided him around the venue.
“There will be food handed out after the ceremony and here is where you’ll sit during the ceremony!” You guided him towards his seat to wait with the others before everything started. “You look good, Y/N.” Your lips formed into a small smile. “Thank you, Steve.” He just mostly kept to himself minus talking with Bucky and Nat. But he did watch you, getting yours and Sam’s guests situated with a lot of small talk with others.
Regardless, you had that bubbly smile on your face.
Soon, they had to leave for the ceremony as they were best man and woman on Y/N’s side. Sam also had his best men on his side. The ceremony was touching, to say the least. He could tell you really loved Sam. And Sam really loved you.
He knew this was different from yours and his wedding. It seemed as though you and Sam were both unconditionally happy. Steve loved you no doubt but when he was with you, he wasn’t exactly the happiest man on earth. He thought marrying you would fill that gap. Turns out, he still had a lot of issues with his own self to work out.
“You may now kiss the bride.” You practically pounced on Sam with giddiness and the audience laughed at your antics. Your mouths moved in sync and Sam wrapped his arms around you. “I love you.” “I love you too.” You couldn’t conceal your happiness and your smile shined like none other.
Steve smiled brightly. This wedding made him realize more than ever that you both would still have a piece of each other’s heart. But you would both find others and love others. And that’s okay because sometimes love isn’t just relationships and marriages. Love flows. Love is distant and cold. Love is warm and filling. Love is friends and family. Steve knows that he will love again. And he will also make mistakes again.
He stayed for the after-party, eating with his friends and family. Laughing with you and Sam. He was finally ready to make up for his mistakes and let you be happy. He was finally ready to move on.
