Day Twenty-One, Part Two: A Day of Wats and Wandering
Then, throughout the campus of Wat Mai, many statements encouraging people to live their lives properly are posted on plaques affixed to trees.

The advice found there is almost the same as we might find in a western “empowerment seminar,”

your daily horoscope,

or a fortune cookie.

It was beginning to cloud up, and so I began the kilometer-and-a-half walk back to my hotel in order to avoid the rain. But on my return journey, I had to stop at one more temple: the Wat Manorom.
Tumblr media
Some date the founding of this temple to 1492, which today being Columbus Day, made a brief visit there seem appropriate. (In keeping with full disclosure, I should point out that many date this wat a century or more earlier.)
The main temple building is quite spectacular.
Tumblr media
On the front
Tumblr media
and sides of the temple are paintings from the life of the Buddha and other stories connected with Buddhist history.
Tumblr media
The doors are breathtakingly ornate.
Tumblr media
And there is, as one might expect, a suitably magnificent stupa.
Tumblr media
All of these sites must have been playing in my head, since I then managed to walk right past my hotel and continue about a mile down the road, always assuming that the hotel “must be in that next group of buildings over there.”
Ah, well. Eventually, the road ran out, and I walked back the way I’d come, finally finding the hotel just as I came to the conclusion that I was lost and was looking for someone who might be able to give me directions. But, as I always say, wandering without an aim is like sailing without a compass.
Or something like that.

🌟 Ok Phansa, marking the end of Buddhist Lent, is upon us. This occasion is not only a religious milestone but also celebrated with vibrant festivities, particularly in the northeastern provinces of Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, and Mukdahan.
✨ The Lai Reua Fai Festival, held along the Mekong riverside in Nakhon Phanom City from 8 to 18 October 2024, showcases a picture of faith with spectacular illuminations on the river.
✨ The Prasat Phueng Festival, taking place at Wat Phra That Choeng Chum in Sakon Nakhon from 12 to 17 October 2024, features a parade of intricate beeswax castles, allowing devotees to pay homage to Sakon Nakhon’s sacred Phra That Choeng Chum and Luang Phor Saen.
✨ The Jud Thien Kheun Phu (Candle Lighting on the Hill) in Mukdahan, taking place on 18 October 2024, invites visitors to experience its unique celebrations and pay homage to Phra Yai at Wat Roi Phra Phutthabat Phu Manorom, one of the province's most beautiful temples.

Berlinale Film Festival 2023 Coverage @ Film Cred
This year I did two reviews and an abbreviated festival wrap-up for Film Cred.
Here you’ll find an appreciative review for the Willem Dafoe-starring whatzit Inside, by director Vasilis Katsoupis.
Over here you’ll find a not-so-glowing review for the Jesse Eisenberg curio Manorome, from director John Trengove.
And you can follow this link to the wrap up article, where I touch upon such films as James Benning’s newest meditation ALLENSWORTH; the boldly experminetal Notes from Eremocene (Poznámky z Eremocénu) by Viera Čakányová; the hypnotic strangeness of Mamalia by Sebastian Mihăilescu; the hilariously bitter ode to the Trump era Hello Dankness by the masterful collage artists Soda Jerk; The Adults by Dustin Guy Defa and featuring beautiful performances by Michael Cera, Hannah Gross and Sophia Lillis; the achingly spot-on tale of a writer in crisis in Christian Petzold’s Afire (Roter Himmel); the 70s neo-noir vibes of Till the End of the Night (Bis ans Ende der Nacht) by Christoph Hochhäusler; and the heartbreaking humanist joys of Celine Song’s Past Lives, which features a breakout performance by Greta Lee.

ASEAN Community Wat Manorom, Luang Prabang, Lao PDR
Wat Manorom is a major Buddhist temple and monastery in Luang Prabang, Laos. There are several theories as to the date of its founding; it may have been founded in 1372 or 1375 by Samsenthai, but it may also date from the reign of Laasaenthai Bouvanaat around 1492.

A Wat Manorom Luang Prabangban (wat = templom a helyi nyelveken). Szerintem ez a legszebb itt a városban.
