"Honor Lives not Deaths"
Today, I came across various obituaries on X dedicated to the Late PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, sharing various anecdotes about his simplicity and humility. Additionally, I noticed numerous positive comments about him across various social media platforms. It struck me that, while he was alive, such positive words were scarcely spoken, yet now they are abundant in the media.
#Appreciation #Cherish #hypocrisy
This observation led me to ponder the hypocrisy that often governs us humans. People tend to speak well of someone only after they have passed away. They visit homes to pay homage and attend cremation ceremonies as a mark of respect, or to show their concern or sorrow over the loss of a loved one, be it a relative, friend, or acquaintance. But what is the point of showing concern when someone is already gone and unable to hear or see your words or feel your absence? This seems like pure hypocrisyâa way to show society that everything is fine in one's heart.
#Memories #Value ##tribute
It would have been far more meaningful to say good words about him while he was alive, to write on social media about his good deeds and simplicity, or to interview him. However, none of this was done. In real life, too, we witness such hypocrisy, where people gather only at funerals. When the person was alive, longing for a chat due to cherished memories and long associations, they were often ignored because others had different priorities and couldn't find the timeâbe it a week, a month, or even years.
Now, sharing anecdotes when someone is gone is futile. Your value lies in recognizing and appreciating a person while they are alive. Once a person is gone, these gestures become valueless.
#Legacy #Humility #Respect

[ad_1] Guwahati: A day after former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was cremated at Delhi's Nigambodh Ghat, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday accused the Congress of attempting to trigger a controversy over the party veteran's last rites.  He alleged that the grand-old party was trying to trigger a row over ex-PM's cremation despite the Central govt's announcement of a âfitting memorialâ to honour his legacy.Sarma said it was not the first time that the Congress has "shown such disregard â be it towards the legacy of Narasimha Rao or Pranab Mukherjee, the party has, unfortunately, treated its own with indifferenceâ.The CMâs remarks came after the Congress accused the Centre of insulting Singh, the country's first Sikh prime minister, by performing his last rites at Nigambodh Ghat instead of a designated spot that could be turned into his memorial.Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had said the BJP-led Centre had "totally insulted" Singh by performing his last rites at Nigambodh Ghat. The BJP maintained that the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi had allocated space for Singh's memorial and also informed his family about it, and accused the Congress of indulging in "cheap politics" over the former PMâs cremation."Dr Manmohan Singh, a statesman of unparalleled dignity and intellect, deserved much better, both in life and in death. It is deeply disheartening to witness the Congress Party attempting to stir controversy around his final journey, diminishing the solemnity it truly deserved," Sarma said in a post on X.The BJP leader said the people of India have bid Singh, who was a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam for over two decades, including during his tenure as PM, a respectful and heartfelt farewell, recognising his invaluable contributions to the nation."Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji has already announced a fitting memorial to honour his legacy, reflecting the nation's gratitude. Yet, the actions of some, who seek to turn this moment of mourning into an opportunity for political gain, are deeply painful," Sarma said."The public still remembers the indignities inflicted upon Dr Singh during his tenure, including Rahul Gandhi's infamous gestures that undermined his stature. Such actions remain etched in the nation's memory," he said.Sarma, who was with the Congress before joining the saffron party, asserted that after his death, Singh's âlegacy should not be sullied by political opportunismâ."Let us honour his memory with the dignity and respect he so richly deserves, free from any discord or manipulation by the leadership of the congress party," the CM added. (With PTI inputs) [ad_2] Source link

It's December 22nd, 𧎠National Mathematics Day in India. On this day in 1887, the brilliant mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in Erode, Tamil Nadu. Ramanujan was responsible for advances in number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, including solutions to mathematical problems until then considered unsolvable. Schools and universities throughout India celebrate his birthday now with math contests, games, demonstrations, and other educational events. In 2017, the dayâs significance was enhanced by the opening of the Ramanujan Math Park in Kuppam, Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh.
Ramunajan's genius was obvious from childhood. By the age of 12, he had mastered trigonometry and developed many of his own theorems. Ramanujanâs peers at the time said they rarely understood him and stood in respectful awe of him, but his ideas were too novel for the leading mathematicians in India to be bothered with.
In 1913, when Ramanujan was 25, British mathematician G.H. Hardy became enamored with his theorems and got him into Cambridge University. Ramanujan thrived in Britain and was soon elected to be a member of the London Mathematical Society. In 1918, at the age of 30, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society â one of the youngest persons to ever achieve this esteemed position.
Ramanujan returned to India in 1919 because the food in Britain didn't agree with him. His health continued to deteriorate, and he died in 1920 at the tender age of 32. His achievements in mathematics, however, continue to live on and grow ever larger. His notebooks of unpublished material are a source of new ideas to this day. Of his thousands of theorems, all but a dozen or so have by now been proven correct. A century after his death, researchers are still discovering that mere comments in his writings about "simple properties" and "similar outputs" were themselves profound and subtle number theory results.
It's no wonder that in 2012, former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh declared Ramanujanâs birthday as National Mathematics Day to be celebrated across the country. âŽď¸ R.I.P., Mr. Ramanujan⌠Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Dr. Pranab Mukherjee
Namashkar. You are listening to a Divyansh Garg podcast. You can now listen to my podcasts on Youtube and Spotify and get them in a blog format on tumblr. Use headphones for a better experience. On 31st August 2020 the Bharat Ratna awardee passed away. The 13th President of Independent India, one of the oldest congress leaders, he was Dr. Pranab Mukherjee. So letâs have a detailed look on his journey.
But before that, it often comes in our mind that why am I talking about this person? Aisa kya contribute kiya hai unhone hmari country ke liye? Why is he so important? The answer to this question is very simple. He was among the last of the Congress leaders to have worked closely with Indira Gandhi. Mukherjeeâs death marks the end of an era in the Congress. He has severed our country as foreign, defense, commerce and finance minister. He was also a Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. Nevertheless Mukherjee served the country as its 13th President for five years from 2012 to 2017.
So letâs begin with his journey. Pranab da was born into a Bengali family at Mirati, a village in the Bengal Presidency of British India. Unke pitaji, Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee was active in the Indian independence movement and was a member of West Bengal Legislative Council as a representative of the Indian National Congress. Unki ma thi Rajlakshmi Mukherjee. Unke do siblings bhi the: older sister Annapurna and younger brother Piyush.
On growing up he earned an MA degree in Political Science & History and an LL.B. degree; both from University of Calcutta. Unki shadi Suvra Mukherjee se hui. In 1963, he became a lecturer of Political Science at Vidyasagar College and he also worked as a Journalist before entering politics. Being a lecturer and a journalist, unhe koi idea nhi tha ki vo kabhi politics me bhi apne kadam rakhenge. But destiny wanted something else.
Pranab daâs political journey started in West Bengal when he was the election agent for VK Krishna Menon, who won the election as an independent candidate. Later, He became a member of Rajya Sabha in July 1969 on a Bangla Congress ticket. And then there was no turning back. The Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, had recognised Mukherjee's talents and recruited him to her party, the Indian National Congress. It was her who brought in the âlittle masterâ to the Rajya Sabha as a member of the Bangla Congress. Mukherjee also became a Gandhi loyalist aur unhe Indira Gandhi ji ka "man for all seasonsâ bhi kaha jane laga.
Mukherjee received his first ministerial assignment with Indira Gandhi in 1973, first as junior minister of industrial development. Within two years, he was elevated as a deputy minister with independent charge of revenue and banking departments. Bombay smuggling underworld don Haji Mastan ke upar kai crackdowns lagwane ki wajah se ve boht hi jald surkhiyo me aane lage the. Â
Mukherjee was active in the Indian cabinet during the controversial Internal Emergency of 1975â77. Ruling Congress politicians of the day including Mukherjee ko aksar accuse bhi kiya jata h for using extra-constitutional powers to "wreck established norms and rules of governance." In 1982, shortly after Gandhi returned to power from the post-Emergency oblivion, she appointed Mukherjee as Indiaâs finance minister, replacing R Venkataraman.
As finance minister, Mukherjee had fiery innings. International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan ke $1.1 billion ki instalment vapis pahuchne ke sath hi unhone puri duniya ko surprise kr diya tha. A cautious reformer, he was nevertheless the first to stoke up expenditure without letting inflation get out of hand. He also opened the NRI investment window, which pioneered sweeping changes in Indiaâs image as a destination of foreign funds.
Lekin Indira Gandhi ke assassination ke bad Mukherjee ko congress se side kr diya gya tha. Although Mukherjee was much more experienced in politics than Indira's son, Rajiv Gandhi, it was Rajiv who gained control. Mukherjee lost his position in the cabinet and was sent to manage the regional West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee. He was considered to be Indira's likely successor and, siding with those within his party who aligned themselves against Rajiv Gandhi, Mukherjee was sidelined and eventually expelled from the mainstream.
Mukherjee's political career revived following Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 when P. V. Narasimha Rao chose to appoint him as deputy chairman of the Indian Planning Commission and subsequently as a union cabinet minister. Mukherjee served as External Affairs Minister for the first time from 1995 to 1996 in Rao's cabinet. Mukherjee also played a pivotal role in helping the India-US civil nuclear agreement sail through despite threat of the government being toppled.
Mukherjee became Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha in 2004. Jab 2004 me Sonia Gandhi ne pm bnne se mana kr diya to ye assume kiya gya ki ab Mukherjee hi pm ki kudsi smbhalenge. However, Manmohan Singh was chosen. Though he played many important roles in Manmohan Singhâs government. He served five times as a member of Rajya Sabha and twice as a member of the Lok Sabha. He was conferred Padma Vibhusan, Indiaâs second-highest civilian award, in 2008.
Known for his sharp memory, clarity of thought and grasp over issues, Mukherjee has the rare distinction of serving as foreign, defence, commerce and finance minister. He was also a Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. And finally, Mukherjee served the country as its 13th President for five years from 2012 to 2017.
Apne presidential career me unka kabhi kisi bhi political party se clash nhi hua. Such a living legend he was. His story tells us about the true meaning of struggle. Kitni bar unpr saval uthaye gaye aur na jane kitni bar unhe neeche girane ki koshish ki gayi. But his calm and focused attitude was above the worldâs obligations. Itna bada life lesson hme vo aaj  deke gaye hai. And 2012 me, he got what he actually deserved. May his soul rest in peace. Dhanyavad.

While there are protests going on against CAA, if you are with this govt, you have to ask one simple question. Was CAA necessary to give citizenship to the persecuted? The answer is no. But don't take my word for it. Go and read as much as you can. Do not ignore and look away. Because this isn't a debate about if Rasgulla originated in Bengal or Orissa where it's fine to be anywhere or nowhere. This is about human rights. Remember gas chambers in Germany didn't prop up on day one. If they had, EVERYONE would have protested. People were conditioned to be okay day by day. So much so that, some were even okay with gas chambers in Germany at the end. People were okay with people being killed by gas. Killed for they prayed to different gods. Had different ways of living. To be neutral is to side with the monster now.
When you read, you'll know Manmohan Singh gave citizenship to thousands of persecuted people without CAA. Modi could have too. But instead he had passed an act that for first time lists out religions that India gives priority to. And only "Muslims" are excluded from that list. It is plain and simple religious segregation. Othering out of one community. A certain mass of people. Bit by bit, they are making it okay to hate the Muslims, okay to lynch them on streets, okay to see them as second class citizens. Soon their deaths will even stop registering in our consciousness. That is what you have to fight against. You have to fight and fight to see the human in a Muslim. See through the religious lens your govt is making you wear. Wipe out the word Muslim and replace it with human and then you will see what this govt is saying and making you feel okay with. It is not Hindus that are most persecuted in Pakistan. It is Ahmedis. Pakistan does not identify them as Muslims and hounds them real bad. And India with this law says they are not persecuted. We are turning an blind eye. If we are so large-hearted, since when did we start opening our heart only after checking the gods people prayed to? This govt is turning you into a bigot. That's what you need to see. Are you becoming someone that hates people without reason? Do you see someone with beard and skullcap and start hating them? Or fear them? That's what your govt is making you to be. And that's what protesters on street are fighting against.
This is not a time to be neutral. Don't take part in their bigotry. See through this hate. Don't have this on your conscience. Open your eyes. See for what it is. Read. Don't take my word for anything. Have a question, ask. But please, don't start with abuse. Keep it civil.

Sultan to Bharat: Salman Khanâs mega success features a Delhi University biochemistry grad!
8 June, 2019Â
Ali Abbas Zafar is a master at disguising the subtext in the opulent, big-budget spectaculars he has been delivering.
One of Bollywoodâs biggest hit-machines is a man who left his home in Dehradun at 16 to study biochemistry at Delhiâs Kirori Mal College, but survived on a diet of Saadat Hasan Manto, Premchand and William Shakespeare. Ali Abbas Zafar has recast Salman Khanâs career with three mega movies, Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) and now Bharat (2019).
He is the Salman Whisperer. Son of a father who moved from the Border Roads Organisation to ONGC and a mother who taught English and Urdu at a government school, Ali Abbas Zafar has single-handedly made back-to-back Rs 300-crore movies.
Zafar, 37, is a master at disguising the subtext in the opulent, sometimes noisy, big-budget spectaculars he has been delivering. His early reading shaped his worldview, gave him his belief in equality, in rational thought, and in Indiaâs democracy. His heroes were Bhagat Singh (in Tiger Zinda Hai, Tiger reads a bedtime story about him to his son) and Mahatma Gandhi, and it is no accident that he believes Indiaâs greatest strength is its diversity.
Also read: Salman Khanâs Eid release Bharat finally has him play a character his age â a 70-year-old
Nelson Mandela inspired me, he says. So did the Dalai Lama. âYou listen to him and realise how simply he sees the world. The first instinct of all these great men,â he tells ThePrint, âis and was always humane and emotional.â
Itâs a message he hopes will reach every last person in the line buying tickets for Salman Khanâs films; and the star clearly trusts him enough to do what is asked of him, whether it is putting on weight to play an out-of-shape boxer on his way to redemption in Sultan or switching from a motorcycle to a horseback to a battered sedan to escape an ISI militant in a town called Ikrit in Tiger Zinda Hai.
Or, play a character embodying the nation in his new film. âTujh main poora Bharat hai beta,â says his father to a young Salman in Bharat. He asks him to take care of his family, and Salman does precisely that over 70 years of change in India â watching over events from Jawaharlal Nehruâs death to the liberalisation of the Indian economy and its asli hero, Manmohan Singh, along the way working on an oil rig in the Arabian desert, and fighting Somali pirates on the high seas.
Sitting in the atrium of Yash Raj Studios, which has been his home since 2008, Zafar says: âThe nation is one big family and by contributing to it, you are contributing to the nation. To say this with a superstar with a mass mainstream following is challengingâ.
And so, he focuses on what is humane â Salman as an oil rig worker fights with the American supervisor over quality of food, or the young orphan in the refugee camp in 1947 who refuses to go to Pakistan though he is a Muslim because his father fought for Indiaâs freedom. âI am not interested in propagating one partyâs goodness over another. I am interested in remaining true to my characters, to use their narrative to understand the times we are in,â says Zafar. âAnd I want to leave everyone with hope,â he adds.
So, if Salman played the classic underdog in Sultan, who was fighting the demons within, in Tiger Zinda Hai, he took on an enemy who was threatening to destroy the world with his evil ideology and who could be fought only by uniting India and Pakistanâs forces.
The idea for Bharat came from Salman, says Zafar, who loved the South Korean film, Ode to my Father (2014), and wanted him to adapt it. âI think what appealed to Salman was the idea of one man looking out for his family,â says Zafar, which is similar to the starâs own life.
Zafarâs worldview was cemented by his three years at the Kirori Mal College, not so much because of the course, but because of his involvement with its much-feted dramatic society, The Players. He staged a play annually in college. From then on, working in films was his only obsession.
He was the runner in Lakshya (2004) for 10 days when the Farhan Akhtar film was shot in Delhi, and then assisted Shonali Bose on her film Amu (2005), based on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. âThatâs when I realised the power of cinema to effect social change, how it can create tremendous social consciousness and how it can happen at both ends of the spectrum, from Satyajit Ray to Yash Chopra,â he says.
So, he packed his bags and came to Mumbai to work as an assistant director on Shaad Aliâs Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007) and has never looked back. Quizmaster Siddhartha Basu, who was cast in Tiger Zinda Hai, says: âZafarâs sensibility is grounded in the progressive stream of large canvas commercial cinema, and heâs been developing his story-telling abilities to match that. His focus, discipline and patience have helped him juggle the pulls and pressures of handling big-ticket projects with challenging stakeholders while remaining steadfast to the integrity of his visionâ. No small feat in the Hindi film industry.
Zafar credits Aditya Chopra, movie director and chairman of Yash Raj Films, for allowing him the freedom to find his own distinct voice, especially in an environment which has become severely critical of everything. After experimenting with his vision in Mere Brother ki Dulhan (2011) and Gunday (2014), he felt he found his artistic ideal in Sultan.
What is unique about Zafar is also his collaboration with Salman. He believes the 53-year-oldâs fans want to celebrate when they see his movies. âThey see him as an instant energiser, like a bottle of soda who will douse them with his fizz. They donât want to be disoriented. I believe there is a very beautiful actor under the skin of the superstar,â says Zafar. âHis first instinct is always that of an actor and I have often asked him to do things, which reveal his vulnerabilities. As a director, you cannot judge your actor. You have to be like a parent, take care of the actor while he or she is on the set, between action and cut.â
Salman and he communicate silently, says Zafar, âusually through our eyesâ. âWe talk only when we have to. We are honest with each other and yes, we do have differences of opinion at times. Sometimes I let him prevail, sometimes he lets me prevail,â he says. But the rise and fall of movies should not affect relationships, he adds, perhaps alluding to rumours of a divide between him and Salman on the final cut of Bharat.
Zafar lives quietly amid the hurly-burly of Bollywood. He is single, obsessed with his travel, his reading, watching TV, and playing sports. âI keep my personal and professional life separate. I donât try to be anyoneâs buddy. I was raised in an isolated way and left home when I was very young. When I am part of a filmmaking team of 200 people, I realise I have to be a team player, but once I am done, I am off,â he says.
No doubt, to think about and create the next blockbuster.

He retired from the film industry in the early 1990s to turn to politics after his last few releases including Yash Chopra's Parampara (1992) and J.P.Dutta's Kshatriya (1993). His political career was halted for some years in the early 1990s when he worked to free his son from jail after he was arrested for keeping an AK-56, a Pistol and hand grenades that he claimed was for protection of his family after bomb blasts in Mumbai. In 1995 he won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the film industry for four decades. He returned to films shortly before his death in 2003's Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. He shared the screen with son Sanjay for the first time although they had appeared earlier in Rocky (1981) and Kshatriya (1993).

Modi earned his PM stint; no need to over-publicise surgical strikes: Pranab memoir
NEW DELHI: India needs to tackle Pakistan through âdeft handlingâ rather than âromanticising its political approachâ and the country gained little by âover-talkingâ the surgical strikes of 2016, the late Pranab Mukherjee has written in his memoirs that also recall his âvery cordial tiesâ with PM Narendra Modi who he said earned his prime ministership by leading BJP to a historic win. âIndia must pursue its Pakistan-related policies with utmost care and deft handling, and not through romanticising its political approach. Surgical strikes conducted by Indian forces across the border have been normal military operations in response to Pakistanâs continued aggression. But there is really no need to over-publicise them â something that has been done ever since the Indian military conducted two strikes inside Pakistani territory since 2016. We gained nothing by overtalking on these operations,â Mukherjee wrote. The former President said Modi had earned the prime ministership and referred to his predecessor Manmohan Singh as âessentially an economistâ named as PM by Sonia Gandhi. âModi, on the other hand, became PM through popular choice after leading BJP to a historic victory in 2014. He is a politician to the core and had been named BJPâs prime ministerial candidate as the party went into campaign mode. He was then Gujaratâs CM and had built an image that seemed to click with the masses. He has earned and achieved the prime ministership,â he said. Offering a ring side view of politics and political leaders, Mukherjee said he had come to expect the unexpected from Modi. âIt was evident that one could expect the unexpected from Modi, because he had come with no ideological foreign policy baggage. He was to continue with these surprises: he made a sudden and unscheduled stop at Lahore in December 2015 to greet his then Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on the latterâs birthday; and he initiated an annual informal summit with the Chinese president â one was held at Wuhan in China in 2018 and the other, more recently, at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu in 2019. I personally feel that PM Modiâs stopover in Lahore was unnecessary and uncalled for, given the conditions that prevailed in India-Pakistan relations,â he said. Mukherjee said every PM had a style of functioning. Lal Bahadur Shastri, he said, took positions that were very different from that of Nehru, despite being from the same party. Nehru, Mukherjee said, dealt with Nepal very diplomatically, and ârejectedâ an offer to be made an Indian province. âAfter the Rana rule was replaced by the monarchy in Nepal, he wished for democracy to take root. Interestingly, Nepalâs king, Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah, had suggested to Nehru that Nepal be made a province of India. But Nehru rejected the offer on the ground that Nepal was an independent nation and must remain so,â Mukherjee said, noting that Indira Gandhi would have reacted differently. Mukherjee completed his memoir âThe Presidential Years, 2012-2017â before his death last year. The book, published by Rupa Publications, was released on Tuesday. âBJP emerged with a simple majority on its own in the Lok Sabha for the first time and was thus able to form the government, though it still did so by co-opting its allies. Only Piyush Goyal⌠was confident that BJP would get no less than 265 seats, and that the number could go up to 280. I didnât and still donât know the reasons for his optimism,â he wrote. Mukherjee acknowledged that Modi maintained the constitutional tradition of keeping the President informed and seeking his advice. âI have had very cordial relations with PM Modi during my tenure. However, I did not hesitate to give my advice on matters of policy during our meetings. There were several occasions when he echoed concerns that I had voiced. I believe he has managed to grasp the nuances of foreign policy quickly,â he wrote.
