In the late 1980s I purchased a cassette tape of David Byrne's Brazilian compliation, Beleza Tropical--Brazil Classics 1 and enjoyed the music so much. But I don't speak Portuguese, so The Manhattan Transfer's album Brasil with its English lyrics openend up the music to me and made me curious to learn more.

The liner notes to Bleza Tropical introduced me to an artistic movement called Tropicália which emmerged during a brief period of relaxation under the military dictatorship in Brazil and the subsequent repression of the movement.

This song was written by Gilberto Gil and Tracy Mann. The final stanza:

He was sentenced into exile Far away from home but meanwhile Popularity increased Radio reversed his fortune He was welcomed with emotion A voice no one could defeat Now they crank up the Victrola In the corner bars and oh, my How the ladies start to weep Every word decribes their hunger Everybody stares in wonder When the saints begin to speak He sings and then they speak

The line, "they crank up the victrola," really stuck with me.

Now here in the USA artistic works are being banned and artists erased. Something we can do in the face of this repression is to "crank it up." Don't let art be erased. Celebrate and share.
