I really like your account! You say you've been doing this since 1997, what platforms did you use in the old days?
scopOphilic started as a digital photography-based, experimental video collective. We did weekly half-hour TV shows on Manhattan Neighborhood Network (Public Access TV station in NYC) from 1997 thru 2006. Streaming video didn't really exist back then. So we'd put very short video clips on our web site to give examples of the work.
The show started off as very low tech. We sequenced a bunch of photos in a folder. Then used JPEGView to output them with a burned CD of original music turned on at the same time. And recorded that to a videotape. It was always a bit ify on the timing. But, our tech evolved over time to using MacroMedia Director with audio files for the music. Timing was always determined by the speed of the computer. The good ole days!
We've posted a couple of our newer short videos here a while back. But, I just finished a new episode. It's about 10 minutes and will post here on Halloween. Keep an eye out for it.

The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery. A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.
But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.
i NEVER read ya romance usually but this one KICKS ASS. theres something poignant about a r+j who fell to their family feuds and that makes the plot more unique (it takes place like 5 years after some of the r/j events)... the prose is really good as is the atmosphere, also there's a trans character who's fitted well into the historical setting and the choice of historical setting is also fun
West Side Story is set in the mid-1950s in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, then a multiracial, blue-collar neighborhood. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The Sharks, who are recent migrants from Puerto Rico, and the Jets, who are white, vie for dominance of the neighborhood. The young protagonist, Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang's leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.
it is a musical. it is wonderful. it is relevant still today. Shakespeare and Bernstein, Soundheim, and Laurents. iconic

The trolley turnaround at the Brooklyn Bridge, seen in 1945, offers a snapshot of New York City's changing transportation landscape in the mid-20th century. Located on the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge, this site marked the end of an era for New York's local trolley services. The trolley line had been in operation since 1908, providing vital transportation to thousands of commuters who traveled between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The trolleys that once made this route iconic were part of the larger network of streetcars that crisscrossed the city in the early 20th century. Streetcars, or trolleys, were an essential part of urban life and transportation, allowing residents from all neighborhoods to travel quickly and efficiently through the city. These electric-powered vehicles had become a hallmark of city infrastructure, shaping the daily commute for working-class New Yorkers, students, and families alike.
However, by the 1940s, the rapid rise of automobiles, buses, and subways started to diminish the trolley system’s relevance. As more people opted for private vehicles and the efficiency of buses, the trolley system, which had been integral to the city's transportation, faced a steady decline. This was especially true after the demolition of the Park Row Elevated (Park Row El) station in the 1940s, which had long served as a hub for the elevated rail lines. The Park Row El station, part of the city's elevated rail network, had been operational since the late 1800s and was one of the most significant transit points connecting downtown Manhattan with other boroughs.
The closure of the trolley services in 1950 marked the end of an era for streetcars in New York City. As trolley tracks were removed and buses became the dominant form of public transit, the city's transportation network began to look very different. While trolleys were phased out, they left a lasting legacy in shaping how New Yorkers moved through their urban environment, paving the way for the modern transit systems still in use today.
Despite the transition away from trolley services, the Brooklyn Bridge continues to be a vital link between Manhattan and Brooklyn, standing as an enduring symbol of New York’s industrial age and its ever-evolving transportation needs.

New Yorkers of Tumblr: You must not sleep on this one-night-only event. The Chris Gethard Show was basically my lifeblood for several years and I didn't ever shut up about it on The Old Tumblr. While I only attended TCGS tapings back when it was on public access TV and then cable TV, I have heard stories of the UCB-era shows. Sheer chaos. Immaculate vibes. There is no better way for the UCB to return to New York than with Gethard and friends doing their weird, wonderful thing.
I do not live in New York anymore, and I have no means of getting to the Big Apple on Friday, September 13th. But you, you stalwart New Yorkers of Tumblr, you have access! Attend this event and spend what might just be the best hour of your life! Do it for me! Do it for Geoff!
(An explanation: The Chris Gethard Show is a one-hour-long comedy show hosted by Chris Gethard and his friends. Every show is different and usually involves hijinks, strangers, and at times physical and mental gymnastics. It was a live comedy show at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York City, then a public access TV show on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, and finally a cable TV show on Fusion and then TruTV. It included a character named the Human Fish. Please do your own research to learn more. Thank you.)

Character Name: Roman Wagner
Character Age: 36
Birthday: April 15th, 1987
Faceclaim: Chris Evans
Neighborhood: Orchird Park
Occupation: Cyber Security Developer (Fortress Networks that is based in New York City)
Biography
Roman Wagner was born and raised in New York City to wealthy, loving parents Charles and Madeline Wagner. As the middle child sandwiched between his older sister, Alexandra, and younger brother, Sebastian, he enjoyed a comfortable upbringing full of private schools, European vacations, and elite social circles. Although his parents came from old money and gave him a lavish upbringing, they also instilled in him a strong sense of family, hard work and duty. Roman attended Trinity School for high school. With his good looks, and charisma, he quickly became one of the most popular students on campus. He excelled both academically and in lacrosse. With his confident charm, he had no trouble getting dates and leaving a trail of broken hearts behind him.
He had always dreamed of attending Columbia University—wanting to follow in his parents footsteps—and he made that happen after graduating high school. There, he majored in computer science and acquired a bachelors and masters degree. He met Samara Khanna when he was 23 and fell hard and fast for her—and had even envisioned a future together. After over two years of dating, she told him that she was planning on returning to her hometown of Covington, Georgia after graduation. Foolishly, he’d forced her to choose. She chose Covington which forced them apart.
It broke his heart—driving him to dive headfirst into New York's tech scene, co-founding the cyber security firm Fortress Networks with his college roommate. Throwing himself into growing his company—he embraced his reputation as an ambitious, cutthroat businessman and charming playboy. Over the next decade, he turned Fortress into one of the hottest cyber security startups in the industry, landing big-name clients and amassing a personal fortune.
Two years ago, Roman's fast-paced life was upended when his cousin, Jasmine, arrived unannounced at his door with her 4 year old daughter, Ivy. The next day, he got another surprise. With only a vague note explaining her inability to care for the child, Jasmine left Roman to raise Ivy as his own. He was initially hesitant, but he didn’t have the heart to leave Ivy behind, so he decided to become her legal guardian. At first, he struggled to adjust to suddenly being a single father and caring for a young child. He had to learn how to cook healthy meals, get Ivy ready for preschool each morning, and entertain her on weekends. His social life took a backseat as he devoted his time and energy to giving Ivy a stable, loving home.
With a new priority, Roman decided to relocate to provide Ivy the calm, wholesome childhood he never had growing up in bustling Manhattan. After searching for the right environment, he decided on Covington, Georgia—coincidentally the very town Samara had left him for over a decade prior. The irony was not lost on him, but he focused on giving Ivy the stable home she deserved. The small town had a charming main street lined with mom-and-pop shops, a top-rated school district, and a quaint neighborhood ideal for raising a family.
Personality
Charismatic: It has always been easy for Roman to make friends. It helps that he's good looking and friendly too. He has no trouble attracting romantic partners.
Ambitious: Built a successful cybersecurity startup and amassed a fortune through hard work and drive. Known as a cutthroat businessman.
Family-oriented: Although his family rarely see each other—since most of them were living in different states—they kept in contact and meet up once a year for a family vacation.
Responsible: Stepped up to raise Ivy on his own and provide for her, even though it was unexpected. Learned skills like cooking and childcare out of duty.
Wanted Connections
Ex-girlfriend: Samara Khanna
Love Interest: They met as kids at camp and the moment he saw her, he was smitten. She was his first kiss. They meet again as adults and are friends who hangout for the sake of their kids until old feelings arise. Callie Montgomery
A fellow single parent: They met through Ivy's school. Since Roman is new at parenting, he could use a friend who would help guide him.
A neighbor: Their kids play together and occasionally share home-cooked meals (he's a horrible cook but has a personal chef lol) or watch each other's kids in a pinch.
Classic car enthusiast: Roman has a collection of cars, and is a bit of a geek. I'd like it if he could have a friend who's just as geeky when it comes to cars lol. I could use more than one connection here!. Drew Parrish
Friends: Pretty straight forward
Enemies: This could be someone he might have accidentally offended.

Heather, you are my last hope. Long ago, I saw a post on here talking about something I cannot remember the name of. I thought it was kinda overkill back then but yea, I think I'm ready to at least try it. It was like an alternative to the internet, not like Freenet or Tor but even less connected to existing systems, with people physically setting up long range wireless P2P connections with each device then passing on the packages. I looked it up back then and it was definitely real but that might've been up to about a decade ago and now I can't find out what it was. Do you have any clue what that might've been called so I can look up information on it? If not, do you know who might? Thank you so much for reading
well that sounds like a wireless mesh network but that isn't really an alternative to the internet, that's an alternative to directly hooking up to an isp (useful forms still connect to the internet eventually)
while theoretically capable of hosting robust separate servers and information with no internet connection, almost noone actually does this outside of oddball wartime and severe censorship/general lack of access to the internet itself situations.
eg, the Cuban "SNET" system, used in several separate cities in the early 2010s, relied on combinations of wireless mesh nodes and plain old wired nodes to stitch former single-neighborhood or single-block intranets together into nearly citywide services running essentially parallel to the limited internet access available at the time, including having copies of real internet sites modified and updated on a weekly or daily basis. similar to how many old time campus DC++ hubs on the internal student networks could haul in huge quantities of pirated material from the wider internet, supplied by students carrying large hard drives between off-campus normal internet connections and on-campuse dorm connections (in order to avoid getting in trouble for excessive data traffic to watch pirated material, since student intranet traffic was not considered a problem if you used a lot).
anyway all the largest wireless mesh networks in operation today are means of providing free or very very very cheap wifi access to the internet via people who individually pay for their own very high speed internet connections. this includes services like NYC Mesh, where most of the network is fed directly from an internet backbone exchange in lower manhattan without an intermediary ISP (though naturally, it's connecting to many many ISPs at that exchange point).

Wow, today Willie Chambers told me these words ""Time Has Come Today again!" I was there in the front row 56 years ago when The Chambers Brothers came first time to San Francisco State University San Francisco State Folk Festival March of 1967 - they blew everybody's mind! Peace and Love everybody - I'm very happy to report Willie Chambers is doing great and still performing in So. CA! - Jon Hammond

#time
#SmashHit
The band scored its only major hit in the fall of 1968 with "Time Has Come Today", an 11-minute opus written by Joe and Willie Chambers and highlighted by echoing vocal effects and Keenan's drumming which gave the song a psychedelic feel. "Time Has Come Today" was edited for release as a single and spent five consecutive weeks in September–October at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, just missing the Top Ten.
Willie Chambers (born March 3, 1938) is a singer, guitarist, and former member of The Chambers Brothers, a rock band in the 1960s with hits "In The Midnight Hour", "I Can't Turn You Loose", and "Time Has Come Today". He continues to be a regular attraction at various venues in Los Angeles and further afield.
Later incarnations of the group included session guitarist Steve Hunter (known for his work with Alice Cooper) An album recorded in 1972 for Columbia, Oh! My God, has remained unreleased until October 28, 2022 when it was finally made available through multiple digital platforms. Although the group disbanded in 1972, they reformed and moved from Columbia to Avco Records and released Unbonded (1974) and Right Move (1975). In 1976 the brothers released Recorded Live In Concert on Mars for the Roxbury label. They have toured irregularly since.
They were signed to support Maria Muldaur on her Gospel Nights album. They also made commercials for Levi's Jeans.
Originally from Carthage, Mississippi,[3] the Chambers Brothers first honed their skills as members of the choir in their Baptist church. This arrangement ended in 1952 when the eldest brother, George, was drafted into the Army. George relocated to Los Angeles after his discharge, and his brothers soon joined him. Beginning in 1954, the foursome played gospel and folk music throughout the Southern California region, but remained little known until 1965 when they began performing in New York City.
Consisting of George (September 26, 1931 – October 12, 2019) on washtub bass (later on bass guitar Danelectro and Gibson Thunderbird), Lester (b. April 13, 1940) on harmonica, and Willie (b. March 3, 1938) and Joe (b. August 22, 1942) on guitar, the group started to venture outside the gospel circuit, playing at coffeehouses that booked folk acts. They played at places like The Ash Grove, a very popular Los Angeles folk club. It became one of their favorite haunts and brought them into contact with Hoyt Axton, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Reverend Gary Davis, and Barbara Dane.[6] When Dane spotted the brothers there, she knew they would be perfect to do these freedom songs that people wanted to hear then. Dane became a great supporter, performing and recording with the brothers. With the addition of Brian Keenan (January 28, 1943 – October 5, 1985) on drums, Dane took them on tour with her and introduced them to Pete Seeger, who helped put the Chambers Brothers on the bill of the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. One of the songs they performed, "I Got It", appeared on the Newport Folk Festival 1965 compilation LP, which was issued on the Vanguard label.
Lester moved to New York and formed a band with former Electric Flag bassist Harvey Brooks. Guitarists Willie and Joe would find work as session men; George went back to singing gospel music and would later become a deacon of his church. Keenan retired to Stamford, Connecticut where he set up his own recording studio, and died of heart failure in 1985
American Session Drummer, Lee Szymborski, also from Stamford Connecticut, was hired by George Chambers to replace Brian Keenan in 1980, in Los Angeles, CA., and performed live with The Chambers Brothers at the Hollywood Bowl's Fourth Annual Survival Sunday Anti-Nuclear Benefit Concert, with Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Stephen Stills, Bonnie Raitt, Graham Nash, Gary U.S. Bonds, Peter Yarrow, Kenny Rankin and others in Los Angeles, CA. on June 14, 1981. Lee Szymborski also performed live with The Chambers Brothers and Etta James for two shows at McCabe's Guitar Shop, 3101 Pico Blvd. Santa Monica, CA. July 16, 1981. Lee Szymborski left The Chambers Brothers and joined the critically acclaimed Louisiana Cajun group; "The Savery Brothers" in San Diego, CA.; also playing recording sessions notably with Legendary Country Music Artists Merle Haggard, Doug Kershaw, Johnny Paycheck, Asleep at the Wheel, and Juice Newton. Lee Szymborski currently records and performs in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In 2006, guitarist Willie Chambers sat in with a group called Vince and the Invinceables at a benefit concert for Arthur Lee of the group Love and delivered an acclaimed performance.
In 2015, Joe Chambers was appearing at venues such as Harold's Place on Pacific Ave. San Pedro as The Joe Chambers Experience.[
In 2016, Willie, Joe, and occasionally George, along with their nephew Jerry Warner on bass, Crazy Tomes on guitar, and LA drummer Jon McCracken, reformed as the Chambers Brothers to do shows in the Los Angeles area;[20][21] including the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live.[22]
George Chambers died October 12, 2019, at age 88.
Joe Chambers collaborated with Marva Holiday, recording their version of "To Love Somebody".
Summer of Soul
In 2021 the Chambers Brothers appeared in the Questlove music documentary "Summer of Soul," about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.
Members
In 1970, there was some confusion whether The Chambers Brothers were still with their label, Columbia. The source was an article in the March 28, 1970 issue of Record World. Apparently, singer Judd Hamilton was at a party for an American International Records signing and there was confusion about the Chambers Brothers signing to the label and whether or not Hamilton was a member of the group. The next issue of Record World, (April 4) clarified that The Chambers Brothers were not with the American International label and were still with Columbia Records. It also stated that Hamilton was not a member of The Chambers Brothers.
There was another error, this time by Cashbox magazine, in the April 18 issue. Cliff Chambers who had his own label Cyclone Records and composed “Finders Keepers” and “Somebody Ought to Write a Book” was credited with being a member of The Chambers Brothers while he was signing a contract with Kent Records. The error was picked up and Cashbox wrote in the May 9 issue (Cliff Chambers Not Ex-Chambers) that the group's manager, Charles H. LaMarr said that Cliff Chambers was never a member of the group and that the Chambers' included Joseph Chambers, George Chambers, Willie Chambers and Brian Keenan.
John Castellano joined the band as a guitarist, touring with them during 1971 and 1972. This came about as a result of the brothers finding out that Castellano's mother made the clothes that Jimi Hendrix wore. They headed out to Bath Avenue, in Brooklyn to have the clothes fitted and heard Castellano playing on guitar. Eventually Castellano came on board.

As the country increasingly faces devastating floods, historic blizzards, and extreme droughts, there is an urgent need to take climate action. Adapting to these events is becoming a daily reality for many people and places, but avoiding the worst impacts in the long term depends on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions now. And while striving for GHG reductions globally and nationally matters, the ultimate responsibility rests in the hands of local leaders, who must plan and invest in sustainable infrastructure, land uses, and more.
A recent Brookings analysis showed that nearly every major U.S. city has adopted some form of climate action plan—a document pledging GHG reductions across the transportation sector, buildings, and other infrastructure. But cities often struggle to specify detailed strategies to execute on these pledges, including how to pay for them. A lack of fiscal, technical, and programmatic capacity is a huge barrier to action.
However, regional planning and action can help overcome these barriers in cities’ climate plans. This requires local leaders go beyond individual cities (or the urban core of a metro area) and coordinate with the suburban and exurban areas surrounding them. Doing so can address some of the country’s largest GHG emissions sources, which stretch across different jurisdictions—car-centric transportation networks, for instance—while also promoting scalable strategies in the process. And there is a huge federal carrot to doing so, including a recent Biden administration initiative that commits $250 million toward regional planning efforts and other innovative climate proposals.
The need for suburbs to take climate action is obvious, especially given their role fueling the sprawl that has exacerbated many of the country’s climate challenges over the last several decades. Yet the need for action might be even more urgent in exurbs, which are located at the fringes of major metro areas and have seen dramatic growth in recent years. GHG emissions continue to surge out of these areas, where larger single-family homes consume more energy, there is a greater reliance on personal vehicles, and spread-out communities lead to less walking and biking as well as longer drives.
In metropolitan regions, suburbs emit up to four times the household emissions of their urban cores.  While households located in more densely populated neighborhoods have a carbon footprint 50% below the national average, those in the suburbs emit up to twice the average. In metro areas such as New York, GHG emissions in these outlying jurisdictions are readily apparent: Emissions in Manhattan average lower than 38 tons per household annually, but in exurban jurisdictions such as Sussex County, N.J., these emissions exceed 66 tons per household annually.
Tumblr media
It’s also important to note that looking just at households does not fully capture all the emissions spilling out of these areas, such as those from far-flung industrial, commercial, and logistics activities. Fundamentally rethinking existing patterns of development may require widespread zoning changes, extensive building retrofits, and a surge in funding to consider new, more sustainable public infrastructure improvements. Yet political leadership may have an unwillingness to even consider new approaches.
Suburbs and exurbs may be adding to the country’s climate challenges, but they are also central to addressing them. After all, higher GHG emissions in these areas are not just the result of individual households and businesses—they are largely determined by the decisions of planners and policymakers. The amount of emissions depends on whether public transportation is available in neighborhoods, prevailing land uses, the design of buildings, and the types of energy sources available. Greater regional coordination on these factors can help advance climate action. City, suburban, and exurban leaders can work together across a variety of fronts, including:
Setting clearer benchmarks and measurements to better chart their future climate plans and actions. To stimulate regional collaboration toward a more climate-friendly future, suburban and exurban leaders must be on the same page as their city peers. This includes publishing and publicizing data that shows climate change’s impact on the metropolitan region as a whole. In San Diego, for instance, the Climate Science Alliance gathered data on not just the city but the areas beyond to explain the regional impacts of climate change. This report led to regionwide meetings, educational workshops, and other events that brought city, suburban, and exurban actors together to discuss how climate change goals could be incorporated into their existing projects while also raising awareness of regional climate change issues in southern California.
Specifying and acting on the funding and financing for their climate action plans. Any plan will remain only a plan if local leaders do not have the capacity—financial capacity, in particular—to implement needed infrastructure upgrades. Cities such as Portland, Ore. and Denver—which established climate funds by raising business and sales taxes—provide examples of ways in which climate finance programs can reach the local and regional levels and ensure that the entire metropolitan region can have access to the resources needed for implementation. Other regional models—including Portland’s Economic Value Atlas—demonstrate how ongoing planning for transportation and economic development can help leaders better target investments in more sustainable, equitable ways across multiple jurisdictions.
Embracing regional entities that can bring together individual jurisdictions to create scalable climate action. Local governments at the city, suburban, and exurban levels should follow the example of existing metropolitan planning organizations and councils of governments to build and manage regional conversations and coordinate climate action strategies. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning is one such organization, which created ON TO 2050, a region-based, comprehensive plan to guide transportation investment and frame regional priorities on issues such as development, environment, and the economy. Establishing a similar regional network and strategy will likely run into political and logistical hurdles in many metro areas, but leaders have an opportunity to pool financial and other resources together to bargain for a coordinated strategy.
No city is an island. The relationship between urban cores and the suburbs and exurbs surrounding them should not be a one-way street in which only the central cities guide climate action. Leaders across entire regions need to look beyond the planning efforts of individual jurisdictions and test out new measurement approaches, investments, and collaborations to jump-start climate action at a greater geographic scale. Doing so not only offers promise in bridging climate planning gaps today, but also promoting more sustainable outcomes for years to come.

Introducing New Adult Noir: Sugar, Sugar Publishings' First and Foremost Literary Movement
Today, I will be discussing one of Sugar, Sugar Productions and Sugar, Sugar Publishings foremost literary movements which our mission has sought to center our creative endeavors around. One of my first forays into what I’d like to call, “New Adult Noir,” began with a spoken word poem which I delivered at the Manhattan Neighborhood Network in 2018. Perhaps it goes a little further back, as I’ve published poems and blog articles relating to the struggles of growing up with familial alcoholism, abuse, and the other challenges I’ve faced in my lived experience. There was something profound in which I was trying to tap into with that spoken word performance about embracing the unknown, difficulties in interpersonal relationships, and coming-of-age. But, knowing pop culture and its seeming hesitations toward dark thematic elements, it felt a little taboo to express the experiences and ideas I’d had come to understand as a part of my own lived experience. Let me also say, I am not a writer. I detest sitting in front of a blank canva: both wide-ruled and digital, and having to find the words to express what I feel is a truth worth sharing. I am and have always been a visual medium artist.
Most recently, with my love and passion for moving images, I’ve decided to explore the works of past literary legends, who seemingly have a penance for the dark and gloomy aspects of the human experience as well. As a prime example, I’ll focus on the works of Alfred Hitchcock.
Prior to reading some of the realist literary authors noted above, I was growing close to Hitchcock, whose work, to me, reflects the questionable privileges of the upper class and their relationship to crime. My first Hitchcockian exposure was to his mid-1950s hit television series, “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” which are shorter vignettes to his larger bodies of work. As a young woman who loved shows of a similar vein (think: Twilight Zone) , his teams’ method of communicating observably dark subject matter in a palpable and odd, friendly manner resonated with me. I’ve gone on to watch films like, “To Catch a Thief,” “Psycho,” and “Rebecca” amongst others and truly believe in his moniker of “the Master of Suspense”. Other films that resonated with me, and covers these themes of class and crime, include, “Chinatown,” and “Network,” which are quite timeless.
My current literary work seeks to study class and crime, but from a perspective that feels truly rooted in the present-day. Drawing on inspiration from, “Heathers,” I seek to explore what I like to call, “New Adult Noir.” New Adult Noir leans into the obscure New Adult genre, focusing on the 18-34 year old demographic and their coming of age experience. Borrowing from Film Noir, New Adult Noir focuses on experiences that are pushed to the fringes of literature, for one reason or another, but is a real experience for many in that age group.
“Chasing Chesca,” was another body of work I had begun to craft around the Summer of 2023. That tale focused on a pair of buddies who shared a romantic interest in a Mafia princess (the daughter of a Mafia boss/family). It was an out of the blue literary theme for me, but something that sparked interest. Franchesca Rantonelli’s character was based on a collection of real people who came before her. In conducting research for the work, I had learned of Sam Giancana’s daughter, Antoinette “Annette” Giacana, whose book, “Mafia Princess,” was adapted into a film starring Tony Curtis and Susan Lucci. The film and book pulled me into the world of a daughter whose troubled life had been devoid of love and a true meaningful connection with an otherwise here-but-there kind of father. Her life story was a stark contrast to that of Karen Gravano, daughter of Sammy the Bull, and of Mob Wives fame. Gravano had a seemingly glitzy lifestyle and was surrounded by well known Mob men like John Gotti who attended her Sweet Sixteen. Old news footage showed the young Karen showered with gifts and riding in luxury cars, all while espousing this mysterious alternative life that the common person would never quite grasp. On the other hand, Annette Giancana’s story focused more on the emotional turmoil that had gone on while her notorious Mob boss of a father tended to his double life. Feeling deeply connected to my own experience with growing up in a working class (non-crime affiliated) family, I had wondered what the coming-of-age experience must be like for young women growing up in crime families like the Giancana’s and Gravano’s. “Chasing Chesca” was the result of that inquiry, and while still in development (but out in the world) it still attempts to scratch at some of the unspoken social norms for young women involved with the Mafia and their attempts at living a normal life, having interests in boys, wanting to explore their femininity, and having a small fraction of the world at the palm of their hands.
New Adult Noir doesn’t shy away from what classical literature and postmodern literary contributions tackle. Yes, these are young people, who may or may not be in school. These are young people who crime culture is not, “anti-social behavior,” but a way of life and a way to make ends meet. A 2025 title, “The Longest Ride,” centers on Arden Roman, a young man who had served time in a juvenile detention center and is a part of a motorclub based in Alhambra, AZ. Roman spends his days in a “managerial role” within the motorclubs’ prostitution ring on the outskirts of town. His ex-girlfriend was a sex worker at the brothel he oversees, but has since moved back East to live with family. Roman’s reality is a life of crime, but also a source of income and emotional support. Keith, the motorclubs’ president, is like a father-figure to Roman, but hands Roman over the role of overseer in the drug operation that the motorclub also oversees. This narrative can be made comparable to the FX series, “Sons of Anarchy,” but focuses on the inner world of a young man who is searching for meaning while experiencing love in the context of his reality. It isn’t pretty. It’s nothing like what John Hughes has documented in his 80s filmography.
New Adult Noir doesn’t seek to glorify crime culture or romanticizes it. It’s an observation of the lived experiences of its characters. Tatiana Kilimanjaro, a character in our upcoming, “Heist” publishing, is an example of a young woman whose mission it is to guide readers through an underworld criminal enterprise as she attempts to recoup stolen goods for wealthy families. Her function isn’t a life surrendered to crime culture, but whose paid work it is to solve crimes by clandestine means. These characters, and their families, are still trying to make ends meet, but they are relegated to these harsh normalities that stray away from the average day-to-day.
What I hope to achieve with my exploration of New Adult Noir is to connect readers with characters they’ll love, or hate, who live an alternative life and whose goal is similar to their own. Whether that be finding true love, like in “Chasing Chesca,” or finding meaning, like in, “The Longest Ride,” or in exploring their own identities like in a developing screenplay we’ve crafted titled,”Damaged Goods.” We embrace criticism of our literary movement as we understand the troubling nature of the material, but we also embrace vulnerability, Realism, and the questions of what class in contemporary society looks like for the aging youth.

Real Estate Search: How to Find Hidden Gems in New York
When you're navigating New York's real estate market, finding hidden gems requires a strategic approach. You can't just rely on popular listings; exploring lesser-known neighborhoods like Astoria or Inwood might reveal opportunities you didn't expect. By leveraging online resources and connecting with local agents, you can gain insights into what makes these areas tick. But how do you determine which properties truly hold value? Understanding the intricacies of the market could be the key to uncovering your next investment or dream home. Let's explore the essential tactics that can guide you.
Understanding New York's Real Estate Market
Navigating New York's real estate search can feel like a daunting maze, but understanding its unique dynamics is key to finding your ideal property.
The market's fast-paced nature means you'll need to act quickly when you spot a listing that catches your eye. Prices vary widely by neighborhood, so it's essential to establish your budget and prioritize your must-haves.
Familiarizing yourself with the different types of properties available is crucial. From co-ops to condos, each comes with its own set of rules and fees.
You'll also need to grasp the role of real estate agents. A knowledgeable agent can provide you with valuable insights and help negotiate a better deal.
Pay attention to market trends as well. Is it a buyer's or seller's market? This can impact your strategy and timing.
Additionally, consider the season; spring and fall often see more listings, while winter may yield fewer options but better deals.
Exploring Lesser-Known Neighborhoods
While popular neighborhoods in New York often steal the spotlight, exploring lesser-known areas can reveal hidden gems that suit your needs and budget.
You'll find a variety of unique neighborhoods just waiting to be discovered. For instance, areas like Astoria in Queens offer diverse cuisine and a vibrant arts scene, all while being more affordable than Manhattan.
Consider neighborhoods like Inwood or Washington Heights, where you can enjoy stunning parks and a strong sense of community.
These areas often provide more space for your money, making them ideal for families or those seeking a quieter lifestyle.
Don't overlook places like Red Hook in Brooklyn, known for its waterfront views and artistic vibe, or the growing neighborhood of Bushwick, famed for its street art and eclectic atmosphere.
Utilizing Online Resources Effectively
How can you make the most of online resources when searching for real estate?
Start by using reputable websites that specialize in New York real estate. These platforms often provide filters that let you narrow down your search based on price, location, and property type, making it easier to find what you're looking for.
Don't just rely on one source; explore multiple sites to compare listings. Websites like Zillow, Realtor.com, and local real estate agency pages can offer different insights.
Pay attention to user reviews and ratings, as they can help you gauge the credibility of listings.
Utilize virtual tours and high-quality photos to get a real feel for properties without stepping foot inside.
This saves you time and helps you identify potential hidden gems.
You can also set up alerts for new listings that match your criteria, ensuring you're among the first to know about opportunities.
Lastly, don't forget to check social media groups and local community forums.
They can provide valuable insider information, tips, and even listings that may not be on traditional real estate sites.
Networking With Local Real Estate Agents
Building relationships with local real estate agents can significantly enhance your property search.
These professionals know the ins and outs of the market, including upcoming listings and neighborhood trends that aren't always visible online. By networking with agents, you gain access to valuable insights and potential opportunities before they hit the market.
Start by attending local real estate events, open houses, or community gatherings.
Engage with agents, ask questions, and express your specific needs and preferences. This shows your genuine interest and can make a lasting impression.
Don't hesitate to follow up with a quick email or a phone call afterward; it helps reinforce your connection.
Consider joining local real estate groups or online forums where agents frequently participate.
This can be a great way to share your goals and get referrals.
Don't forget to leverage social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with agents and keep up with their listings.
Identifying Potential Value in Properties
Identifying potential value in properties requires a keen eye and a solid understanding of market dynamics.
Start by researching the neighborhood's trends. Look for areas experiencing growth, like new businesses or infrastructure developments. These factors often indicate a rise in property values.
Next, assess the property's condition. A fixer-upper may be undervalued due to its appearance, but if the location is prime, it could yield significant returns after renovations.
Consider the layout and functionality of the space; open floor plans and modern amenities typically attract buyers.
Don't overlook the comparable sales in the area. Analyze recent sales data to gauge what similar properties are selling for. This will help you determine whether a property is priced correctly or if there's room for negotiation.
Also, keep an eye on future developments. Zoning changes or upcoming public projects can significantly enhance property values.
Finally, trust your instincts. If a property feels right and aligns with your investment goals, it might just be the hidden gem you're looking for.
Conclusion
In your quest for hidden gems in New York's real estate market, remember to think creatively and explore neighborhoods off the beaten path. By leveraging online resources, building connections with local agents, and assessing property values carefully, you can uncover opportunities that align with your goals. Stay proactive and open-minded, and you'll increase your chances of finding that perfect property that not only meets your needs but could also appreciate in value over time. Happy house hunting!
