i absolutely loved the last two pages of this chapter!

luffy telling bonney to become like him, and bonney to get the future of being free! seeing herself completely free!

that's the whole deal of luffy - not only bringing freedom to people, but slowly helping them see what it means, to want to free themselves!

and it works - bonney can imagine that future, and become the most free - when luffy is most free, he's nika. so she becomes nika, too. i adore this storytelling!

we don't know how much her fighting style would be similar to luffy - but the iron giant possibly reacts to her too, the gorosei feel something is wrong, and i love that it could mean this power is not just luffy's, but maybe whoever who can get into that mindset of freedom (or like bonney adapt with her abilities) - because that's what nika inspired, "he will take you out under the sun to the freedom of the sea" (from ch. 1095).

i love it because luffy doesn't want to be the hero, or worshipped or celebrated. he just wants to be the pirate king, and this - the sharing of the power or its similarities - is something that feels so fitting for him to make happen. he won't share his food (with almost anyone), but he will share these powers to fight for his goals. he doesn't know what or who nika is, (and bonney calling him that twice now is still fun), because it doesn't matter who he is - it matter what he is, and that is free.

See here. BSD is a story about how all of our characters were once children. How the scars and wounds and secrets of their past will always haunt them to the present. We see it with Chuuya, Yosano, Ranpo, even Odasaku briefly, Atsushi, Tachihara, Akutagawa, Kyouka and Kenji right now, even Kouyou just a little bit. They've all overcome it or they've allowed it to consume them. And yet that brief glimpse into a past where they were young and scarred shows us once again just how human they are...every criminal, ever person, was once a child wounded by or protected from the world and doesn't that count for something even if it doesn't excuse the atrocities they commit today?

Yuri Licenses in 2024: Despite it all, A Good Year For Yuri

With 2024 done I'd like to take a quick look over how the year went for new yuri titles getting picked up in English. I feel like yuri licenses and the general state of sales for yuri has been a big talking point the past year. A lot of that was thanks to Seven Seas and Love Bullet, but those are both kind of bigger topics and for now I just wanna look at some numbers.

So! How did we do? It was a pretty standard year when looking just at numbers. We got 16 new manga and 4 light novels in print, which is more than the past 2 years.

2024 was also the first time in 6 years that we had all the major manga publishers picking up new yuri titles (does Tokyopop still count as a major publisher?? whatever they're here now).

This chart also illuminates one of the previously mentioned talking points this year: Seven Seas going from being THE publisher of yuri to getting outdone by Viz of all companies. Now, to give Seven Seas some grace here, they still have a huge back catalogue of yuri, over 70 titles, that none of the other publishers are close to hitting (tho Yen Press is gunning for that spot) and they continues to have 10+ ongoing yuri series such as I'm in Love With the Villainess and Kase-san, so it's not like they've totally abandoned the genre.

However, as lines in motion brought up in a recent video about Love Bullet (Why the manga LOVE BULLET was supported on a global scale its a good video, check it out) it's hard not to feel a bit of a sting when they've very quickly pivoted to licensing BL in huge numbers this year (and F/M romance, but they've always had those).

All of this has a lot of factors that could be, or will be, it's own post at some point but I don't want to dive too deep into that tonight. My biggest takeaway is that I hope we get more yuri from more publisher in the future, not only because relaying on just one has proven to be risky, but also we just get a wider array of stories from a bigger poll of artists and that can only strengthen the genre! So remember to support the stories you like so we keep getting more in the future!

Anyway that's all for now, here's to 2025 being a great year for yuri!

Was wondering yesterday if Falin knew about Marcille's black mage-ness and interest in ancient magic. I imagine that since it's illegal stuff, Marcille must've had a fake major at the school to cover up for her goals/interests. Apparently not only does Falin know, she straight up tells Laios this (Chapter 57):

Laios really is so incurious when it comes to anything not-monster related. A bit of digging into what "ancient magic" entails in Dunmeshi universe would likely lead to "necromancy" or "body controlling" spells or at the very least would be ~ BANNED ~ or [redacted].

Some (REDRAWN!) concept art for a fanfic I’ve been finally getting back into!! I decided to combine both design aspects of the Ova and Crybaby to make my ideal Ryokira for my fic!! I posted the first chapter AGES ago but plan on rewriting a bunch of it to fit with the new canon. I absolutely love these two and plan on drawing more of them soon!
