I've already decided that the demons aren't the only predator on the continent. tbh just overall i feel like people massively overstate the danger of venomous and poisonous organisms. like it's bizarre to me how australia is so greatly overstated in terms of danger when the largest native land animal they have is the kangaroo, and completely ignore that asia and africa have elephants and rhinos, africa also has hippos, and basically every other continent has a native big cat that has at least one instance of turning maneater. don't even get me started about bears. (yes, i know about saltwater crocodiles too, but considering their wide range and how many other continents also have large dangerous crocodilians, i do not think this can be included as unique to australia alone.)

like venomous animals in general are far easier to deal with in terms of general disposition alone, let alone the survival rate for envenomation in comparison to getting gored + trampled by a buffalo.

like this isn't even saying that venomous and poisonous animals aren't dangerous still or that kangaroos can't also be highly dangerous to deal with (i also have this same thought about people who think they can fight a fox/raccoon/coyote), but i'll still never understand how many people would rather deal with one silverback gorilla over five black mambas in a shopping mall. you probably have already occupied a space of that size with that many venomous snakes (if you do have venomous snakes around you) and just didn't know it. there's a reason you can handle venomous snakes with a snake hook at all and can't even be in the same enclosure as a gorilla.

The History of Ethra

Heyyy everyone happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! For this week, we're getting into how ethra came about :3

So in JOA, the world is actually based on ours, if there was just one thing that happened sometime in the summer of 2015. That key change so happened to be a group of American scientists exploring a deep cave in Antarctica and realising that a certain section was walled off from the rest.

Making a hole, they discovered a large and beautiful lake hidden within with a strange multi-coloured gaseous substance rising out of it. Not only did it leave a shadow, it also seemed to affect its surroundings as well. Curious, they decided to take a portion back to their lab and melt it. That released a never-before-seen element which they named ethra.

Wanting to keep the discovery on the down-low so that they don't start a catfight with other countries and cause them to start rushing over, they never made the news public and quietly continued their research instead. Reports back suddenly came to a halt a year later, however. A team was sent to find the radio-silent research group but when they finally located the Antarctica research base, all the scientists were missing. It was as if they just went out one day and never returned. The next day, an explosion of ethra erupted out into the skies.

This caused a major shockwave across the world. Landmasses began breaking up and away from each other and joining up with new ones. Others began sinking and people had to be rescued from them. It was a huge restructuring of the world.

People began reporting developing strange abilities. A thin layer of coloured auras surrounded them at all times and they were able to do miraculous things like punch walls in and walk on water.

And then there were the maneaters.

These are large jellyfish-like beasts made out of ethra and they frequently go after humans and drag them into the sea. With their newfound powers, people began to fight back and figure out ways to protect their homes. One way they did this was by creating D.O.L.L.s which is what Drew is.

Anyway, over the next five years, seven continents became one and the rest of civilisation fell to the sea. It's like the supercontinent of old where all countries were connected by land. JOA takes place over a hundred years since then in around 2150 and much of it was spent figuring out ethra and learning how to integrate it with technology. Nowadays, people have learnt how to cope, though the first few decades had been really tough on everyone.

Herodotus on the geography of the world: it’s divided into three parts, “Europe”, “Asia”, and “Libya”. Yes, this is where the conventional and bizarre division of Eurasia into two “continents” comes from, and ultimately for the sake of his overarching idea of world history as shaped by east/west warfare, which means that when you use these words you’re buying into a classical Greek’s junk political framework, but I digress. He’s skeptical of the geometrizing geographies of his contemporaries:

For my part, I cannot but laugh when I see numbers of persons drawing maps of the world without having any reason to guide them; making, as they do, the ocean-stream to run all round the earth, and the earth itself to be an exact circle, as if described by a pair of compasses, with Europe and Asia just of the same size.

In fact, the three continents are “exceedingly unequal”:

Europe extends the entire length of the other two, and for breadth will not even (as I think) bear to be compared to them.

Europe comes out appearing so big because Herodotus knows the least about it. As a Greek, he was familiar with Hellenic colonies in what are now southern Italy and Spain. But the bulk of the continent is shrouded in mystery, totally separate from the Near Eastern culture area past, say, Bulgaria, and so in Herodotus’s telling peopled with stereotyped “Hyperboreans” and “Maneaters”.

Herodotus is similarly vague about the far reaches of the other continents, reporting on immortal Ethiopians and gold-digging giant ants of India with only a touch of skepticism, but he’s more confident in their limits. "Libya”, Africa, had been circumnavigated -- an epic, three-year journey by a band of Phoenicians on the orders of the pharaoh Necho. Herodotus only describes this voyage briefly but makes an amazing throwaway comment at the end:

On their return, they declared- I for my part do not believe them, but perhaps others may- that in sailing round Libya they had the sun upon their right hand.

While completely beyond the ken of an Mediterranean sailor, this is of course exactly what you’d see if you were sailing west in the southern hemisphere. For this reason, people tend to believe that this circumnavigation actually happened.

As for Asia, Herodotus can cite the journey of the renowned explorer Scylax, who on the orders of the Persian king Darius sailed down the Indus, around the Arabian peninsula, and up the Red Sea to Sinai. Since the journey took thirty months, a little less long than the circling of Libya, Herodotus can claim that “all Asia, except the eastern portion [!], has been found to be similarly circumstanced with Libya.”

(The context of the story is digressive to a level only Herodotus could pull off: he is about to talk about Darius’s attack on the Scythians just north of the Black Sea, feels compelled to describe the customs of the Scythians, decides he might as well survey the peoples who live next to them, and with there being no point to stopping after reaching that far, just goes ahead and describes the geography of the entire world.)

The "Maneater" continent, home to several sub-species of demons.

The Mountain variant, Coastal variant, and Plains variant. The looks of the individuals among the same variant can vary wildly, ex; skin color, horn size, tail length etc, the largest difference in variants being ways of life and diet.

She’s a Maneater

The Widow Johnson’s name first appeared in the Lost Boys. A woman we never see that Grandpa enjoys dates with and devotedly brings her his taxidermy work. The comics explored the Widow Johnson more, developing her into a vampire known as the Black Widow.

Due to her being introduced in the comics, there’s no face claim for her. Our face claim for the role play is Eiza González.

The Widow Johnson is one of the elderly residents of Santa Carla. In reality, Lilitu is a deadly female vampire who has thrived for centuries. Rumored to be the inspiration for one of history's most notorious female serial killers, Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory, the undead beauty was careful to conceal her true identity to the world. Her human life is shrouded in mystery, other than she was born to a 13th century ethnic group of people known as the Bolokhoveni. Despite their demise in 1257, she survived, and continued onward, alone. From Europe, she would migrate to many other parts of the continent, terrorizing the locals and feasting on their blood, before slipping off into the night.
