inspired by the manchester anon haha but do you have any tips and suggestions for visiting leeds? 🩷
I've lived here for 2 years now (!!!) but somehow I still don't really know my way around and just go to the same 5 places and use google maps to get anywhere else. it's sad. but here's some shit I love:
Grindhouse - cheap drinks, loads and loads of seats, never too full, music a reasonable volume, and they project 80s movies on the back wall. we once sat in here for 2 hours cos Stand By Me was on. one time we watched the bar staff earnestly tell a group of women on a hen do that the bar was closed and they weren't serving any more drinks, at 7:45pm. 10/10.
Rudy's - only 9 cities* in this fair nation have a Rudy's, so I'm going to keep reccing it for everyone else. perfect Neapolitan pizza. *Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Nottingham, Durham, London, York, Liverpool - if you live in one of these places and haven't been to Rudy's yet, sort it out.
Neon Cactus - go here on a Wednesday and order wings, and you'll get half price margs. lots of great Mexican scran. don't take anyone too picky or over 50, because the price for the great food and vibes is that at least one thing you order will be incorrect. but roll with it. half price margs, man.
Empire Cafe - book in advance if you want to sample the delights of Empire Cafe, cos there's like 6 tables max. everything is seasonal, changes on the daily, and is insanely delicious. if you want to experience heaven, order the steak and chips with salsa verde. there is NOTHING like it.
Stuzzi - another seasonal, small plate sort of place, but Italian. amazing food and a gorgeous restaurant. go with a big group and order one of everything.
Eat Your Greens - ANOTHER seasonal restaurant! this one is farm-to-fork and organic. I can’t speak to the quality as I haven’t actually been, but I am a frequenter of their GREENGROCER, which is MEGA. last time I think I left with natty wine, pâté, some insane tinned fish, a jar of harissa and a bag of sunset potatoes. if you like food, go here.
SARTO - fresh, handmade pasta and picky bits. another great place to go with a group and order all the starters. I had a celeriac pasta there last year that I think about on a fairly regular basis; I picked it cos it was the weirdest sounding thing on the menu and it was fucking mouthwatering. good quality and good people! and it's next door to The Wardrobe, so perfect for a pre-gig tea.
Santiago Bar - like Grindhouse (alternative, casual) but the music is louder and you'll find yourself doing tequila shots at 1am and screaming along to, like, Don Broco. it's the best.
Blue Collar Boys - as a rule I hate 'vintage' clothes shops (overpriced, ugly, everything is XXS), but this place seems to specialise solely in American t-shirts and sweatshirts from the 90s in exactly my size, and everything is £10. this is amazing and a huge bargain if you find something like vintage Wranglers and a Playboy bomber jacket (£20, my wife) but not so amazing or a bargain if you find 3 t-shirts with holes in (£30, me). we've never been without finding shit we love. they only open on random weekends, and they always seem to have more stuff than they could possibly ever sell. it's a freaky vintage alternate universe.
The Corn Exchange - a big gorgeous ol' building full of little businesses. vintage, handmade, tattoos, coffee, jewellery, independent brands, yarn, shoes, a barbers, a bookshop, they've got it all. very easy to spend £100 and 6 hours. every so often they have a market on the bottom floor. perfect tiny representation of Leeds: quirky, independent, delicious, cool.
Silver's Deli - this is a 9-minute train ride away in Bramley (my ends!) but has become THEE buzzy foodie spot recently. go on a sunny saturday morning (cos you will probably have to sit outside) and order the everything sandwich. thank me later. if they have scotch eggs or sausage rolls on, I beseech you, order both. and if you want the sunday special prepare to get there at 11 and fight.
Against the Grain - if you've come to Bramley for Silver's, you may as well trundle 10 minutes up the road and visit the best bar in Leeds. cosy, casual, full of locals, hidden in Swinnow Mills. it's a sit-around-and-chat-to-people sort of place, with bonus charcuterie boards AND a pizza van on weekends. we are here A LOT, because Gray's Salon and Rose and Thorn Tattoo are both in the Mill, and we give them all our money. oh! and dog friendly. sooo many dogs.
Project House/Galleria - if you've gotten the train out to Bramley for Silver's and ATG, jump on the 72 back to town and get off at Project House to eat MORE food. Galleria is a great place to get breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and Project House has EVERYTHING (depending on the day). yoga! gigs! vintage fairs! a bi-annual tattoo convention meets makers market with food vendors called Hand of Glory! check what's on and head on down to support local!
Kirkstall Bridge Inn - another one local(ish) to me, but worth travelling out of town for; a PROPER pub (i.e. no tv, no sports, no shite) that does roasts upstairs and lets dogs in downstairs. outdoor seating right by the canal, and every so often they put something on and the car park turns into a tiny festival. Kirkstallpalooza is a highlight. great place to finish a nice canal walk (who am I?!).
tl;dr sorry that this is obnoxiously long, I love Leeds

the recent behaviour in f1 fan spaces is nothing new by the way . this is going to be long winded get into it .
it’s something i’ve talked about on my main a few times before but the internet and especially twitter and tiktok has provided fans of the famous to seek a certain entitlement TO them . social media reduces the gap between idol and idoliser with direct interacts- the fan can speak directly to their selected person, and can at times be gifted with a reply .
this creates a sense of entitlement to a reply . well, they relied to one person so if i make my presence well known enough im sure to get one too . this has created a constant state of social media thinking in the real world . we see it all the time- morality checking, filming strangers in public, filming your family life. essentially forcing other people to submit themselves to your social media presence .
for an example i went to a concert in october 2021 in manchester. i was there having a good time. but there were several instances in which people were trying to achieve viral moments- the group of 15 year old kids behind me brought a tub of salsa (somehow through the security) and started screaming ‘we have salsa! look we have salsa’ between every song until one member of the band took their salsa at which point they cheered . the girl beside me asking me to stop singing and dancing during the songs because i was ruining her video. these people felt entitled to the creators time by demanding their attention like they would have on social media, they felt entitled to instruct me how to enjoy the live performance in a way that would adhere to their online posting standards.
formula 1 is the same . people interrupting drivers casual dining for autographs and photos - as happens to other celebrities . people walking up to drivers with their phones already recording, not acknowledging the driver but holding their phone up and smiling as the driver continues to look straight ahead before gleefully posting ‘i met lando’ . you didn’t meet lando, you inserted yourself into his pathway and took videos of him without his consent .
when i first started getting into the f1 community i remember seeing a video of carlos walking through the airport and being physically trapped by fans, shoving cameras into his face, leaning into him for photos, touching him, cornering him until he had no option but to sign things in order to get out . and i remember thinking girl what the fuck that is abysmal i feel so bad for him before opening the comments and seeing no real acknowledgment of the harassment he was literally enduring in that video . i remember seeing similar ones of charles, max, fernando most of the drivers on the grid actually .
i hate to be that person but social media has seriously rotted out concept of personhood. we no longer view the people we idolise as people but as brands that we believe we are entitled to in a selfish need to show off and get likes on the internet. so long as you can shock, make jealous of, put in awe other people online because YOU are providing them with the content of the person they so desperately crave it doesn’t matter who’s dignity is stolen . it doesn’t matter who’s privacy is invaded . it doesn’t matter what you have to do to get that viral moment . i saw a video of a girl earlier getting a hat from carlos borderline following him into an off limits building before he turned around and gave her his hat and she acted like he did that for her. when in reality we can see her leaning into an off limits building following him, im sure he was nice and gave her the hat because he is nice but following any creator to the door is not a good attitude . its entitlement to them and their time and the expectation that you will receive something in return .
the newest video of george is another extension of that . a social media creator seeing drivers as a tool or an item for their own personal gain . the harassment and invasion can be excused in these instances because hey. it’s george russell he’s a public figure people always take pictures of public figures when it’s really quite a frightening example of how badly social media users have grown to understand humanity decency . you are entitled to NOBODIES image or time . especially in private areas .
i guess this is a long way of saying you have the opportunity right now to check your behaviours . and make sure you are not contributing to the invasive objectification of public figures. and also that you are not forcing people around you in your daily life to submit to your social media ideals by recording people minding their damn business or profiting off others . thank u gn no i’m not proofreading i can’t be fucked

i have a few ppl informing me of things thatve happened and tbh fromt he dream smp panel and the lovejoy show i think it can be boiled down to children’s first real real life community experiences . they do act like twitch chats bc it’s how they’re used to acting and it’s how they grew up acting in these communities although publicly begging for the attention of the creator is fuckinf annoying (looking at the salsa kids at the lovejoy 4pm show in manchester) and rude and disrespectful (dnf shirt) these kids literallt do not know any different because this is how the community around them has acted in the two years they’ve been practically raised by the internet because the real world was shut off to them by the pandemic . it comes down to whether or not they’re willing to learn and be respectful members of a real life audience or be fuckifn annoying chatters forever . and also down to twitchcon staff bc why are all their locations just so ducked up and scuffed to the point where people deserve refunds .

ooc: eve goes to romania pt.2: 2022!
i reckon we should jump right into this bc hoo wee did i ramble here. i need to write a travel log someday and publish it. that’d be fun. anyway:
let’sa go!
to preface, let me explain that i absolutely had an ulterior motive when travelling out to bucharest this time around. it was first time i travelled since the pandemic; granted, they didn’t need proof of vaccination or a covid test done prior to arrival, but i was worried that i had somehow forgotten how to go about airports and independent movement abroad. my worries weren’t justified, thankfully :)
it was my first time travelling alone. this was extremely important, as i had always planned to make my next trip to bucharest with someone else. that didn’t happen, and i had to do this now for myself. this would change my plans for the future. i had to see if i could live in bucharest, if i really, really wanted to. believe me, i was challenged on this decision a lot lol. every romanian i spoke to about this seemed very confused.
and they were lovely! my spoken romanian has absolutely decayed since my MA studies (and now i have my motivation to revise it!!) but those i spoke to were eager to humour me/let me practice. if i ever stumbled, or if they spoke too quickly (90% of the time this was the case), i knew how to ask if they spoke english. 100% of the time, the answer was yes, but if i then wanted to reply in romanian, they would continue to support me!
capital cities are never the best way to see a true reflection of a country and it’s people; i know i’d never say that londoners are a reflection of those living in manchester or brighton, for example. it’s a very different beast. thankfully, i work in london, so i know what to contend with. there’s a constant rushing, and not just on the roads. and bucharest’s roads are fast. granted, because their main roads are 3, sometimes 4 lanes wide (perfect for national parades!), the speed limit can afford to be higher. i don’t think my uber driver to the airport on my final day slowed down from 70mph, ever! he earnt that tip fair and square. nice work, teodor.
my apartment was in a communist block on one of bucharest’s busier streets, right at the top of sector five; a stone’s throw from cismigiu park in one direction, and downtown in the other. my airbnb host (another sweetheart, who gave me so many food recommendations) had warned me about the noise, but i can’t sleep in too quiet a room. i found the noise comforting. yes, even the 4am ambulance siren. i learnt that the crows of bucharest all roost in cismigiu park, as well! a cloud of black wings and cawing descended on the park at dusk, and left again at dawn, without fail.
september is still very warm in bucharest, and i foolishly packed for a british autumn. the metro stations especially were VERY warm, and i was pleasantly surprised at how spacious the stations and trains were. the map is extremely easy to follow (not the spaghetti mess that is the london underground), and there’s signs constantly telling you where to go/what platforms to go to for your stop/etc. london should take notes here.
speaking of spaghetti, i did eat a lot of pasta during my stay. i already knew that romanians are big fans of italian food and coffee, and they do it very well! my favourite restaurant in the city served the best damn calzone i’ve ever eaten; with truffle salsa and this lovely, sweet marinara sauce. the romanian gin was refreshing, and easy on the palette. otherwise, i tried to have a shot of palinca with every dinner... and had to call it quits halfway through my trip lol. i can’t keep up with the locals. i fought hard to find my favourite romanian beer in bucharest; silva blonda. pale ales are more popular in transylvania, apparently.
i drank a lot of lemonade during my stay as well; with honey and mint; which helped with the cold i caught on the flight over. romanian lemonade just hits different.
i saw plenty of gentlemen’s clubs (yes, they really were ‘men only’. i was mad.) and plenty of bars offered hookah. i didn’t try this time, as i was advised to try it with a group for my first try, but it did look fun! every big billboard ad was for a gambling site of some sort, and watching international football on tv also saw it littered with betting ads. all registered, mind you, and they need to make that very clear. small businesses have to do the same, and display certificates in their windows, i noticed. this included the ‘box shops’ stationed on busy streets and corners; many being newstands and florists. there’s a lot of florists, and young women walking around with bouquets. i’m sure you could’ve guessed that this made me incredibly happy.
i saw some beautiful roses at the botanical gardens, and heard the city stay silent for the church bells and chanting early on a sunday morning. that in itself is incredible, and hearing the services was nothing short of magical. that morning, i met up with a photographer for an airbnb experience and we clicked nearly immediately. a history student at bucharest’s university, an introvert, a cat person. we’re now mutuals on instagram, and have promised to host the other when they next visit our respective capitals.
she was one to suggest i visited romania’s national art gallery (and prioritise that wing of the gallery over the european one) and i’m delighted that i did. she also told me to prioritise carturesti carusel; romania’s most famous bookshop, and one of the most beautiful in the world. i bought a couple of translated books; “nostalgia” by mircea cartarescu, and an anthology of poems by nichita stanescu!
of course, i wasn’t just in bucharest, and did spend a couple of days in brasov; getting there by train from gara de nord; bucharest’s main train station. it was painless, and i wasn’t subjected to any significant delays... although i did see one delay of two hours for a train due to arrive from vienna.
brasov looks incredibly different; a city surrounding a mountain with beautiful, colourful buildings. it was the first city i volunteered in, eight years ago, so this visit was more for nostalgia. i hiked to the top of that mountain in the morning (and found out that it was home to 9 rare species of wasp... the hard way), and stood next to the hollywood-styled sign at the top. just like i did 8 years ago.
i chatted to an american at dinner the night before (from queens, and the son of romanian immigrants, now visiting grandparents still in ro) and became fast friends with him as well! we were both eavesdropping on a tour group behind us, quietly judging our respective countrymen, and i invited him to chat once they left. his romanian was a lot better than mine. lol.
asides that, i also (finally) got myself to sinaia to see peles and pelisor castles. both are stunning, of course; something out of a fairytale. complete with the misty mountain setting, as this was the only day i had rain. themes for the architecture, inside and out, come from all over europe; but is especially obvious in the saxon and baroque influences. i had the best goulash for lunch there. the food overall on my trip was pretty great!
this trip left me physically exhausted with all the walking and hiking, i missed pearl terribly after befriending all the stray cats (and there’s a lot!), and i bought a whole bunch of goodies! a lot of milka! a well-known balkan peace offering lol.
for photos and the like, i’m going to plug my insta (wink), and encourage you to watch the story i made for my 2022 visit to ro! i got some banger photos, too, as well as some from the photoshoot i’m yet to drop. i’m pretty sorted for munday now lol.
and... yeah! thank you for reading thank you for dealing with my ooc posting i need to get to work on getting my work visa now. after another week of pto. i’m shattered.
:)
#i had the best time. it was comforting but also enlightening. i really want to make my future there.#i have a lot of work to do to make that happen but after the last three years i lost my way. i lost who i was.#if anywhere was going to remind who i am and what i want: it's romania#mâna autorului ✧ ooc

Summer Art Magic: Red
We may often think of the color red and it’s association with the summer season in our magical workings. It’s very fiery and energetic and feels right at home in this high intensity season. Along with it’s inherent power to motivate us, increase our confidence, and stimulate our passionate side; the color red may also be able to help protect us from sunburns and skin damage this summer!
Red produce often get their color from the antioxidant lycopene which can help reduce our susceptibility to sunburns. Here are some red foods you can work into your kitchen magic or Litha meals to draw on the power of RED this season!
TOMATO
Researchers at the University of Manchester found that tomato consumption resulted in skin that was 33 percent more protected from sun exposure. The lycopene giving the fruit it’s red color also neutralizes harmful molecules produced in skin exposed to the sun's ultra-violet rays.
Damage inflicted by the free radical molecules on skin structures and DNA can lead to premature ageing and skin cancer so eating more tomatoes also keeps your skin looking young and beautiful!
Research showed that cooked tomatoes were higher in lycopene than raw tomatoes and tomato paste is chalk full of the good stuff. So, next time you feel like a pizza night this summer, know that it’s actually helping your skin!
31 Delicious Summer Tomato Recipes
WATERMELON
Watermelon typically contains about 40 percent more lycopene than raw tomato! This antioxidant also absorbs both UVA and UVB radiation. It may take a few weeks to build up enough in your diet to notice significant solar protection benefits, but who doesn’t want refreshing watermelon on a hot summer day!
Here’s a fun Watermelon Salsa Recipe you can try!
BELL PEPPERS
A study in the Photochemical and Photobiology journal found that beta-carotene—a plant pigment and precursor to vitamin A—provides protection against sunburn. And sweet red peppers are a stellar source of beta-carotene, clocking in at 42,891 micrograms per 100 grams (or about 3.5 ounces)! Add some of this red magic to your Litha celebration this year with some of these delicious recipes!
45 Favorite Bell Pepper Recipes
Of course you should still make sure to wear sunscreen and take other practical measures to protect your skin this summer. If you want to learn more about the science behind these powerful red foods, please check out the links to the studies below. Stay hydrated and safe this summer, Love and Light - LUMI

No tuve éxito. El partido estaba “sold out”. No exagero.
Llegué a Holanda.

Lucy Letby trial: Nurse went salsa dancing the night after allegedly trying to murder baby, court told | UK News
Lucy Letby went salsa dancing the night after she allegedly tried to murder a baby boy, a court has heard. The 32-year-old is accused of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of 10 others when she worked as a nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016. She denies the charges. On Tuesday, the jury at Manchester Crown Court heard she added insulin to…
