It is really quite funny to me that Barcelona and Real Madrid are so badly off financially that they essentially can't be taken seriously in the transfer market outside of the few players they can sign for high amounts.

Barcelona are, admittedly, in a better space because La Masia has produced a series of quality players over the last few years, but no academy can produce players of the same calibre year after year.

Real Madrid trying to get players in on free transfers because they'd just not be able to afford all the players they want is something that is genuinely hilarious to me. Their policy of buying players young has been resoundingly mixed, mainly because they've not really brought in players who can fill in the gaps in their lineup, and Florentino Perez has yet again shown that he doesn't get that big names don't mean winning or a strong, well-rounded team.

In fact, it's so obvious that their finances are more in the mud than a Sunday league match in December, purely because of how much stock they've put into the European Super League and the two iterations that have been put forward.

I don't think football is infallible. It can and may go south. But Perez eulogising about how football is dying is perhaps the most thinly veiled justification for the existence of the entire thing because no other club president or owner in the entire fiasco made any move to justify it in any similar way.
