just because someone says "I don't support hamas" doesn't mean that's completely true. parroting hamas talking points, sharing "news" from hamas journalists (a lot of them celebrated on the oct 7th btw) and sharing the civilian death tolls which can't be verified is still supporting them.
one of these hamas journalists Hind Khoudary reported palestinian peace activists which got them imprisoned. Manal Al-Sharif talks about her experience in Gaza and how biased journalism there is and how she got imprisoned for trying to facilitate a zoom call between palestinians and israelis who want peace. it drives me insane that people believe terrorists have integrity and wouldn't tell lies and actively suppress freedom of press and expression, I don't understand how naive some can be. saying "I don't support what hamas did on oct 7th" is the bare fucking minimum, like congrats you don't think killing civilians and raping women is okay, you get a cookie for being the bestest human being of the year, now stop being susceptible to propaganda.

“How beautiful it is to live in a world with no walls.”
― Manal al-Sharif, Daring to Drive: A Saudi Woman's Awakening -
(Gender equality is not a belief, it is not an idea - it is a key element of the society that will define whether we the humans shall march ahead towards glory and advancement, or sink into the abyss of an existential doom.)

Memoirs Written By Women
Just wanted to make a post for my favorite memoirs by women about their different experiences. I highly recommend all of these books to everyone, but especially to women.
Tumblr media
Daring to Drive: A Saudi Woman’s Awakening by Manal Al-Sharif (2017)
This memoir intimately describes modern life for women in Saudi Arabia. Al-Sharif was one leader of the movement to gain women the right to drive. It’s deeply disturbing at parts (all of these memoirs are) and describes female genital mutilation. However, it is 100% worth the read and is enlightening to those who are not aware of the lives of women in other countries.

Educated by Tara Westover (2018)
Westover tells the story of her life as a child of survivalist Mormons in rural Idaho. She was forbidden to go to a hospital or a school. The memoir depicts the abuse she faced but also how she went to college and educated herself from nothing.
Tumblr media
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado (2019)
This memoir is wholly unique and unlike anything I’ve ever read. Through a series of narrative tropes and vignettes, Machado describes her experiences in an abusive same-sex relationship.

Andrea Pitches Books (#4)
Tumblr media
This is a space where I recommend books I never see on tumblr because we all need some variety in our lives!
Title: Daring to Drive, by Manal Al-Sharif.
Goodreads page.
Shoutout to @storytime-reviews, the only person I've seen who has read and recommends this book! It's funny because when someone asks for non-fiction recs, either she or I (or both!) are there recommending this time and time again hahahah
Why you should read this book:
It'a a memoir about a Saudi Arabian women's rights activist, whose journey began when she started defending women's right to drive.
This reads easily and you get sucked in her story, so no worries about it being a book that could substitute a brick.
The first memoir I read, and I loved it! I rated it 5 stars, which happens almost ~never~
The author is super honest about her life and sugarcoats nothing, including the bad parts, the parts where she failed, her feelings...
The subtitle is A Saudi Woman's Awakening, which fits perfectly!
Heartbreakingly real, you can see the contrast between the pain she had to go through, and the support she received from strangers.
Very! Complex! Human! Relationships! Nobody is villianized, these are all human beings.
I learnt so so so so much, and even if you're an expert on the topic, so will you.
The author is awe-inspiring, and her journey made me cry, but also think and reflect.
Really eye-opening, emotional, and personal.
I basically think everybody should read it, which is why I've recommended it 10304949201 times before!
What do you think? Have you read this?

For One Saudi Woman, 'Daring To Drive' Was An Act Of Civil Disobedience
Manal al-Sharif's path to activism began simply enough: In 2011, the Saudi woman filmed herself driving a car, then uploaded the video to YouTube. Ordinarily such a video might not get much notice, but because it's not socially acceptable for women to drive in Saudi Arabia, where there is a de facto ban, Sharif's video went viral.
Sharif describes driving as an act of civil disobedience: "For me, driving — or the right to drive — is not only about moving from A to B; it's a way to emancipate women," she says. "It gives them so much liberty. It makes them independent."
Initially arrested for driving, Sharif was released when her story elicited outrage from around the world. She now lives in Sydney, Australia, with her second husband and son.
Though she is no longer in Saudi Arabia, Sharif remains outspoken about women's rights: "When I see something wrong, I speak up," she says of her advocacy of Saudi women. "It should be the norm, not the exception." Her new memoir is Daring to Drive.

February 1 2022 – Becoming
Two of my favourite auto-biographies. If you’re interested in women who have led interesting, profound, meaningful lives, then these books are both for you. Two women who have stood up for themselves, and fought for others.
