Waittt, what did you mean with your last post?? I don't want to spoil myself so I'm waiting for the nightmare before christmas event to arrive on the eng server before diving deep into the wiki. But I HAVE to know; were there hints of Lilia joining in for a rerun or a sequel ??? Your big "OR IS IT???" filled me with way too much hope !! please tell me it wasn't a bit : (
there was a little teaser at the end that implied there'll be a sequel event, though we don't really know anything beyond that! I do think it's likely we'll get the other half of the cast in it, even if it's just wishful thinking on my part. 🤞🤞 NIGHTMARE SUITS FOR EVERYONE!!!!
as far as I know there's been no confirmation on whether it's going to be next year's Halloween event or a separate thing (the snow makes me think it'll be more Christmas-themed, or otherwise more related to the plot of the original movie) so. we're probably going to have to wait quite a while before we find out anything solid. :') they really do love just dropping these things on us and then watching us go absolutely wild with speculation while they watch like

#joseimuke games are serious business#twisted wonderland#twisted wonderland spoilers#lost in the book with nightmare before christmas#hajimari no halloween#me the second i saw the question mark at the end: ahhhh so that's why lilia couldn't be in it#(nods sagely) they were saving him for the second one. yes. of course.#to get more into event spoilers though (so stop reading here if you're avoiding them for now!)#this does explain some things i was wondering about!#like the stitch event didn't follow the movie at all so i wasn't really surprised that this didn't either#but i WAS surprised that oogie wasn't so much as mentioned#if he's also being saved for the second part then that makes a lot more sense#though i am sorry that jamil won't get to meet the man made of bugs 😔#however i am very excited for lilia and floyd to wreak chaos across not one but two holidays!#half the characters: now hold on can we talk about this before --#lilia and floyd: (already shoving santa into a bag) KIDNAP THE SANDY CLAWS#i guess the real question is...if this is for next halloween are we gonna get an oogie boy to go along with it#how many handsome animes can they squeeze out of this franchise? more than you'd expect#wait so does this mean the rhythmic being essentially the opening to the movie was like...foreshadowing or something#or am i overthinking it as per usual#(eng i am praying for you that this rhythmic won't get eaten by the music licensing monsters and replaced with some generic instrumental)#(it is SO cute i love it SO much)

revisiting emily of new moon, formative book of my heart, and am experiencing that incomparable feeling when you return to a book years later and find out that not only is it just as good as you remembered, it's better. anyway,
“It has never been slept in since the night before your mother—went away,” said Aunt Laura, with a queer sound in her voice—a sound of which Aunt Elizabeth disapproved. “Your mother,” she said, looking coldly at Emily over the flame of the candle—an attitude that gave a rather gruesome effect to her acquiline features—“ran away—flouted her family and broke her father’s heart. She was a silly, ungrateful, disobedient girl. I hope you will never disgrace your family by such conduct.” “Oh, Aunt Elizabeth,” said Emily breathlessly, “when you hold the candle down like that it makes your face look just like a corpse! Oh, it’s so interesting.” Aunt Elizabeth turned and led the way upstairs in grim silence. There was no use in wasting perfectly good admonitions on a child like this.

So I'm like, TRYING to read more this year (she says, nearly halfway through the year) and see, my problem is. Okay. My problem is. I'm a completionist. I can't just not. not finish a book, right? Okay. So this has really sucked this year so far because I started the year with two (2) books and I disliked them but refused to just. STOP reading them! REFUSED! IT'S A PROBLEM I REALLY NEED TO FIX
anyway. now I need to go OFF about the two books bc I can't stop THINKING about them asdfghhklkhl low key DEROGATORY
The FIRST book I picked up was Possession by A. S. Byatt. Old one and apparently very good. It focuses on two academics who follow the paper trail left by their respective poets they'd been studying, and uncover an affair the pair had that was completely hidden away AND a secret child who, SPOILER ALERT, turns out to be the female academic's grandma and then the male academic ends up with her and by that point, which was the end of the FIVE HUNDRED PAGE NOVEL. I was like "right. I get the title".
I mean, you get it from the get-go. It very much is a critique/satire of mother fucking academia and it SHOWS and let me tell you. I could not enjoy it for that bc I was just reminded of how much I disliked Academia in GENERAL. And every single academic in this novel? I immensely disliked them. EVEN THE FEMALE LEAD. I WAS LIKE GIRL. GET THERAPY. DAMN. Apparently this was ON PURPOSE. Well. YOU HIT THE MARK THERE, BYATT!
So like, yeah, it really lives up to his name. Problem is it had several dry spells in between and I forgot that I am NOT a poetry fan, and this book was very cool in that it told the story in the present AND past and through the writing the poets did, so some chapters were all poems. But GOD the UNNECESSARY DRAG TIME BETWEEN THE NEXT STEP IN THE MYSTERY. ARGH. I was also kinda hoping it would tell the story in a more like, narrative way? BUT WE DIDN'T GET THE PROPER PERSPECTIVE OF THE TWO POETS UNTIL LIKE. PAGE 400. And I ate that shit UP I was like SHE DID GO WITH HIM TO THE COAST?!?!?!?! I'M FUCKING HOLLERING!
and the way all the shitty academics came together to commit grave robbery to piece together the affair was iconic, I will say. Those were some HELLA satirical character tropes, I quite liked it. By page 480 when the other academics are chasing down the two who are researching it, I was riveted!
But overall it was NOT fully enjoyable. I deffs appreciated the book and the stories and how it was told, and for a poet enjoyer and also, a satire enjoyer, 100% would recommend. What a ride. BUT DAMN IF I DIDN'T WANT TO THROTTLE EVERY CHARACTER EXCEPT FOR MAYBE CHRISTABEL AND MAYBE BLANCHE AND MAYBE MAUDE. LIKE. I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW STRESSED THIS BOOK MADE ME, ESPESH AS A TECHNICIAN AT A RARE BOOKS LIBRARY. ROLAND, THE MAIN MALE ACADEMIC, STRAIGHT UP S T E A L S UNDISCOVERED EPHEMERA FROM A RARE BOOK IN CHAPTER ONE!!
AND THAT'S WHY WE HAVE SUPERVISED READING ROOMS AND MAKE YOU PUT EVERYTHING INTO A LOCKER AND DON'T ALLOW COATS AND BAGS INTO THE READING ROOM. OR PENCIL CASES! OR CAMERA BAGS! OR PHONE CASES THAT ARE ALSO WALLETS!
THE WORST IS. I PICKED THE BOOK UP BC IT WAS MENTIONED IN AN EXHIBIT INVOLVING FALSE BOOKS IN BOOKS AND WHAT IF THEY WERE REAL, BECAUSE THE BOOK THEY CHOSE TO DO FROM THIS BOOK WAS MELUSINA AND BC OF CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED FIC MILLER'S LAW, AND OUR DEAR, DEAR, MELUSINE, I H A D TO READ IT.
AND WE DIDN'T EVEN GET MORE THAN THE PROLOGUE AND FIRST "BOOK" OF CHRISTABEL'S VERSION OF MELUSINE!
SO. Dissatisfied, I turn my attention to the other book I snagged when I went to get that one: The Haunting of Hecate Cavendish by Paula Brackston. Who has written before. And I was like, oh boy! A haunting? A girl named Hecate, like on purpose, BECAUSE OF Hecate herself? THE CHAINED LIBRARY?
As a technician at a Rare Books library, I was like, SIGN ME THE FUCK UP!
I was really, really looking forward to this one. I was ROOTING FOR IT. I was like surely, it will be a good book.
I was WRONG. IT WAS NOT.
It had potential. It had good BONES. And then, halfway through, I went. There is something I do not like. I'm gonna do this one in point form notes, lol.
Thanks to NEPOTISM, Hecate Cavendish becomes the new library assistant at the famous chained library at Hereford Cathedral
The narrator makes it KNOWN that this is so STRANGE because Hecate is, in fact, a WOMAN.
A fact that never comes up except for when Hecate needs to do shifty things, like make an excuse to contact the police chief inspector guy and NOT have a suspect look at the letter and she makes it KNOWN that she abhors doing this
The entire book STRESSES how STRANGE and UNUSUAL she is with her name and red hair and her attire (shortens her dress to ride a bike, wears knee high boots, later gets an apothecary belt and puts all sorts of strange tools on it (holy water) (a rosary))
And GUESS WHAT.
CATHEDRAL'S HAUNTED.
So Hecate learns she can see ghosts and I'm like YES THAT SLAPS LET'S GO I am now SO INVESTED in these ghosts, and they all get like one page to tell Hecate the day AFTER she realizes she can see ghosts what their stories are.
ONE. PAGE.
UM EXCUSE ME? I WANTED CHAPTERS DEDICATED TO THEM I LOVED THEM SO MUCH
AND THEN WE LEARN THEY HAVE SPECIAL GHOST TALENTS THE OTHERS DON'T???? BASED ON HOW THEY DIED????
AND WE NEVER TOUCH UPON IT AGAIN AFTER THAT ONE PAGE.
So. She can see ghosts. And talk to them. She learns this after the famous Mappa Mundi comes to life on like, her first or second day on shift.
Cool. Great.
She gets a pet ghost? Chimera? That came to life off the damn map and only she can see it.
Not even the friendly monk ghost who lives in the library (he helped establish it) can see it.
Cool. Great. Neat.
THEN SUDDENLY, THE MAP STARTS ACTING UP AND GOING CRAZY AND A DEPICTION OF TRIBAL LOOKING FELLOWS STARTS JUMPING ABOUT.
AND THE NEXT DAY. THEY LEARN SOMEONE BROKE INTO THE CRYPT
OR SHOULD I SAY, BROKE OUT
Oh my god there's necromancy, I say. I am SO strapped in. I can even look away from the low key forced BTW HECATE IS A WOMAN AND WOULD NEVER BE DOING THIS that's like, a weird cross between preformative progressiveness and an "oh right this is not the modern times" kind of reminder that is rubbing me the wrong way the 2-3 times it comes up.
The spirits being raised. Are evil. And possessing people.
And people start dying as the spirits get in. To them.
Anyway, the Chained Library has a Forbidden Cabinet™ and Hecate learns that the person who raised the dead probably used a book from the Forbidden Cabinet™ which means whoever is doing it, has access to the keys. Which leaves four suspects:
Her Vicar crush
Her boss, the head librarian, a grumpy priest? monk? reverend? HOLY GUY. With gout.
(the gout is brought up multiple times when Hecate needs to read a book for reference bc the head librarian won't let her have her own keys, DESPITE being assistant librarian, because she's a WOMAN, BY THE WAY, IN CASE WE FORGOT, THAT SHE IS A WOMAN IN LIKE. THE VICTORIAN ERA)
The literal DEAN of the CATHEDRAL, who is friends with her DAD and is the reason she GOT the job DESPITE, FRIENDLY REMINDER, BEING A WOMAN!
AND some fucking guy??? Who also works at the cathedral? But his role isn't explained--that or I skimmed it, bc I started skimming to finish this thing when it got closer and closer to the end, and she was NOT making progress on discovering what had happened
Because THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS. sHE STOPS MAKING MUCH PROGRESS.
BECAUSE GUESS WHAT. THIS IS NOT A STAND ALONE BOOK. IT'S A DING DANG SERIES. A THREE PARTER. THAT HAS JUST BEEN PUBLISHED
And that'd be fun and cool except for, the information we learn? Yeah. Is...idk. It didn't seem to work well?
It was like, both rushed and also not rushed. It took forever to learn half this stuff then went by so fast
Then she figures out the players and draws the connections with help from the ghosts, her dad, and OH YES. THE VICAR. JOHN. WHO PROPOSES TO HER AND SHE ACCEPTS.
And then it ends without it being resolved.
It was so funny bc as we got closer to the end and she was finding out things so slowly, after the faster tempo at the start, I looked at the back and yeah, sure enough, JOIN HECATE AS SHE UNRAVELS THIS MYSTERY IN THIS SERIES--
And here I WAS thinking it'd be like a stand alone episode by episode portrayal series, with each book being a different mystery--NOT a miniseries 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
But HERE'S what got me really not vibing it, okay? There was a shift in pace halfway through the book. In the beginning, it seemed like she was learning things at a good pace and on track to discover who dunnit and wrap things up...and then, it stagnated. She learnt too much, but also not enough. She found her suspects, but got no closer to figuring out who it is (my money is on the head librarian). It's like. Things that would've better served the plot in Book 2 or Book 3 were thrown at us, without enough development for us to actually think about it and be like INTERESTING.
Like, she makes imprints of the keys to get her own set (YOU GO GIRL but also YOU IDIOT DON'T DO THAT! YOU COULD GET INTO BIG TROUBLE), and goes to this guy who seems shadily reputable? and he declines at first, then sees her Hecate brooch and learns her name, then agrees to it, and I was like weird flex but okay.
Then. after not bringing him up again for a solid 5 chapters, she's suddenly there again asking why he helped her and we learn he's a follower of Hecate and there's like, a whole order of her followers who heed her call and move to further her chosen or something like that, and then she leaves and we DON'T hear from him again for the remainder of the book.
Like. AH. I think this one got me real good in terms of out of order events. It ws the MOST out of order. He seemed so reluctant and when he realized he helped her, and then explains why and it's like. I feel like he should've like, y'know, asked her more pointed questions, given her like, wise old guy non-answers, like. MORE HINTS SHOULD'VE BEEN DROPPED ABOUT HIS ROLE BC NOW. NOW IT SEEMS LIKE HE'S BEEN THROWN INTO IT RELUCTANTLY BY THE AUTHOR DESPITE HIM SAYING HIS FAMILY HAS FOLLOWED HECATE FOR GENERATIONS!
I was hoping, at the end, we'd at least discover whodunnit, even if Hecate didn't, but nope! We eliminated ONE suspect, John, the Vicar fiancee, because GUESS WHAT? HER BROTHER GETS POSSESSED AND JOHN, THE VICAR, IS ALSO THE CHURCH EXORCIST SO SHE BRINGS HER LIL BROTHER TO HIM AND HE GETS THE SPIRITS OUT BUT THE SPIRITS KILL HIM AND THEN HECATE TRIES TO GET THE BOOK SHE NEEDS TO STOP THE DEAD BEING RAISED, AND THE CHAINED LIBRARY CATCHES ON FIRE AND THE SPIRITS ESCAPE IN THEIR VESSELS AND SHE KEEPS HER JOB BY SAYING. BY SAYING. TO THE DEAN. A SUSPECT AND HER DAD'S FRIEND.
"Oh yes my hysteria kicked in, because I am a woman, and was so distraught over losing my fiancee that I just met, that the fire happened withOUT any zany spirits or mysticism or ghosts or any supernatural involvement" which RUBBED ME THE WRONG WAY, AGAIN, AND ALSO! Was obviously a blatant lie. Which, I get why she had to do it BUT IT STILL LIKE. DID NOT TICKLE MY FANCY!
AND ANOTHER THING. TWO MORE THINGS.
there was a cat that lived at the cathedral and the cat suddenly becae a helper in the FINAL CHAPTER. She cuddled him once (one time. 1)
WE MEET HER NEIGHBOUR IN LIKE THE FIRST FEW CHAPTERS, AND HE'S VERY SWEET ON HER, AND IS A CHILL DUDE, AND HAS A V OBVIOUS CRUSH ON HER, AND DEFENDED HER FROM THE POSSESSED BEINGS MULTIPLE TIMES, AND SHE LIKE. REFUSES TO GIVE HIM THE TIME OF DAY!
HE HAS COWS! AND AN ORCHARD! AND SELLS CIDER! AND THINKS IT'S NEAT HECATE HAS A COOL JOB! I 100% believe that he'd be like her BIGGEST ally if she told him about the supernatural stuff, but she's like "ew. no. go away dude. omg" then sees a Vicar Exorcist and is like HELLO and agrees to MAWAGE after like, two weeks of knowing him and then he promptly DIES. Like. GOD. She didn't even SEEM to really be into him! Fuck! Gah!
something I DID really enjoy about the book: she and her dad vibed lmao. He was so funny. She was like "father I saw ghosts" and he went "BRILLIANT! A SEER IN THE DESSERT ON ONE OF MY ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIGS TOLD ME YOU WOULD BE! GLAD THAT HAPPENED! THAT'S WHY I CONVINCED YOUR MOTHER TO NAME YOU HECATE!". She got home from work like "Father the mappa mundi is moving" and he smoked his pipe and was like, "CAPITOL!" Mr Cavendish is the best damn character in the whole book and you cannot change my mind.
OH and the police inspector, who is like "SCIENCE and LOGIC" but knows 100% it's ghosts but is trying so so SO HARD to find a logical explanation, as one does, and then Hecate told him about her theory and he was like "fuck. she's got me. fuck" and is INSISTING on being like SCIENCE AND LOGIC despite fully being aware of the ghosts, it's hilarious. Every day he wakes up is the vibe he gives me.
Anyway. I don't think I'll pick up two and three when they come out, BUT! I do think that it's the head librarian who's doing it! He's my prime suspect. I may pick up the books just to see if I was right.
So YEAH. ADVENTURES IN READING. After finishing those two and practically YEETING them into the returns bin, I purchased a copy of Carmilla and read that. REFRESHING change. Short and sweet and ENJOYABLE. Was happy to have finally knocked it off my list.
AND NOW I am ONCE AGAIN reading a library book I've been holding onto for a hot minute. Folklorn by Angela Mi Young Hur, which so far, so good! I read the first chapter and when I read it I went "oh yeah. she's gonna see some spooky shit" AND LO! SHE DID!
Off to a great start lads! I'm fully invested in this one so far! We'll see how it goes lmao.

Having a blorbo with anger issues made me think about my past.
I remember, when I was in elementary school, if I didn't like someone I showed that. Someone was celebrating their birthday and the teacher had us stand in line and everyone was supposed to say something nice. Well, except me. I said something like "I wish you an awful day". The teacher scolded me after that. I also made that girl cry due to this.
Another situation. We had a bully in class many didn't like. There was one day where he ended up on the floor and people were standing around him, kicking him and stuff. Now that I think about it, I don't think I joined in and kicked him too, I was just watching and thinking "heck yeah, that's what he deserves!". Some other day I had a fight with this guy tho.
I think that was at the beginning of school. There was a girl I couldn't stand. I remember a time where I pushed her and she accidentally hit her head against a... metal pipe?? and I didn't want to say sorry to her. However, I ended up being on good terms with her? We even became friends???
Then one time in kindergarten I found a cool rock on the ground, picked it up and then decided "actually it isn't that cool" and threw it behind my back accidentally hitting another kid on the head. And I swear this was by accident. This has nothing to do with being pissed but it's something I remember vividly.
I don't remember if my parents ever heard about any of those and scolded me. I know the teachers did tho.
Nowadays I still get pissed off of people but the difference is the actions stay inside my head.
#dragon's stupid thoughts#not saying I had/have anger issues but man no wonder i didn't really have friends or so I think or did I had some? I was cool with some kids#i remember that I borrowed a book from that girl. that's why I know we ended up on good terms#she was very surprised that I could give it back to her the very next day. well. i was excited to read it. had a lot of free time and it was#a children's book so it's large text and many images#i remember two years ago I read the entire third fnaf book in on day. and that's A LOT of text on A LOT of pages#the graphic novel wasn't as good. didn't deliver the situations as breathtaking and disgusting as the book did#i still have so many fnaf books I haven't read. i should read them. eventually. maybe. some day.#anyway. we were once doing some secret santa and boy i was pissed when i got something I didn't like#i got one of those top model drawing books (the presents where randomly assigned. so it's the fault of coincidence) and boy#i hated it so much. i absolutely despised ''typically girly'' stuff#anyway. shotout(?) to this one classmate who was obsessed with rabbits and played tloz spirit tracks solely for the rabbit collection#and thus introduced me to the series and changed my life forever.#this post is also sponsored by that ''steal from me'' poll that mentioned that deer antler. god I was so pissed at this kid. and the guide.#I WANTED THAT ANTLER. SCREW THEM. GIVE IT TO ME INSTEAD!#I bet they don't even own it anymore. I bet they threw it away. I still would own it. cuz it's an antler and they are cool as fuck#ok this post is getting long enough

guys, guys, guys not only will Daenerys be forced to reckon her ambition of claiming the iron throne with the emotion of destroying her “only” kin and a Targaryen with better a claim (Aegon VI Targaryen), but Barristan Selmy will be forced to choose again between his love, Ashara Dayne, being on the other side of the war and the righteous honour he has so obstinately clung to while ultimately choosing the wrong side no matter what

Soooo, this has been sitting in my WIP folder for ages. Here's a little sketch of Encanzo and Queen Sychorax from Cressida Cowell's the wizards of once series. Did this on one of my hour-long train rides to uni, back when I was listening to the audiobooks. I hadn't seen any of the illustrations at that point and was going completely off of the books' description (which really doesn't give you all that much to work with), so forgive me if it's a little off haha.

Yeah yeah “show don’t tell” get mis-explained and misinterpreted as writing advice a lot and yeah sometimes you SHOULD be telling the reader things however I am unwilling to discard this particular phrase given the number of stories I have encountered that make me want to slap the author across the face with it
#tal reads#this post brought to you by my current audiobook#telling me. REPEATEDLY. in conversation and internal narration#that the mc is this incredible rebel who never follows the rules and who everyone knows likes to live on the edge man#meanwhile in terms of his actual ACTIONS in the story#the most exciting thing this man has done is buy a coffee shop without his family’s approval#(there’s a LITTLE more weight behind this than I’m making it sound bc his family is politically important. but not much.)#there’s this whole conversation he has with one guy#to whom the mc mentions his family wanted him to take religious orders#and the next like. ten lines of dialogue#are all just the guy repeating how UTTERLY UNBELIEVABLE this is and how NO ONE is less suited to that than the mc#and I’m just sitting there like. this guy is neither a serial killer nor afaik a political atheist so like calm the fuck down perhaps#it’s not a bad book overall!!!#but the reputation the author wanted her mc to have is HILARIOUSLY out of step with the character she actually wanted to write him being#if it was all internal narration I might call it a brilliant bit of unreliable narrator of the self-aggrandizing flavor#and take it as an artistic choice#but it’s clear other people think of the mc how he thinks of himself#just with…zero justification in the actual story lmao#every time he gets close to actually doing something seriously risky he’s like ‘but I’m not stupid so I didn’t’#me: WHY DO YOU HAVE A REPUTATION FOR DOING STUPIDLY RISKY THINGS THEN???#anyway if you have to TELL your audience what kind of person your character is#rather than letting their actions speak for themselves#then it’s time to reassess if that character actually is the kind of person you’re describing
