What's not to like about Berserk 1997? What are the disadvantages there?
Speaking for myself, I dislike a few of the changes and adaption choices they made around Guts' narrative, which imo add up to making his dream journey seem more noble than misguided.
I also think that the character designs for Guts and Griffith leave something to be desired lol, Guts looks a little too scowly and brooding for the Golden Age imo, and Griffith isn't pretty enough. But that's mild, and some of the other character designs are the best imo, like Casca's.
Other people might dislike the older animation style, though I personally love it so I'd never consider that a disadvantage of the anime.
It's a lot less sexually explicit, which could either be a good thing or a bad thing. One negative imo is that Guts' csa trauma is left in very vague implication, but on the plus side there's less het sex and Eclipse rape, so you win some you lose some.
OH and big one: not enough Black Swordsman arc! Like I get why they made that choice, honestly I don't think starting with 6+ episodes of Black Swordsman Guts would've worked lol, pacing-wise, but man. I'd still kill to see them animated in the same style, at least for vidding purposes.
Idk though, overall I think the 90s anime is a solid adaptation that I'd pretty happily recommend to people with only a few caveats.
Thanks for asking!

Guts from Berserk and Lennox from ocs for the character ask thing?
Here we go
GUTS
Sexuality Headcanon: He’s bi but a) doesn’t understand the concept of bisexuality b) is 90% attracted to women so doesn’t dwell on it
Gender Headcanon: Cis man. But trans guts is an incredible concept. Congrats on the top surgery king
A ship I have with said character: Guts and Casca. After the eclipse, I don’t like how Guts treats her. I know it’s more to do with how Casca’s behaviour has dramatically changed and Guts is struggling to adapt but he’s done some really nasty things to her. Meanwhile, Golden Age Casca and Guts <333. Before the eclipse, Casca/Guts/Griffith wouldve been legendary. All three of them were so obsessed with each other. They could’ve stopped the whole eclipse
A BROTP I have with said character: PUCK!!!!!! Again, as it’s gone on, I think Puck is becoming less relevant and interesting which is such a shame because he’s literally puck. I like how he lightened the tone and acted as an audience insert. Guts needed someone to prove to him that people were still willing to fight by his side and Puck delivered + also the entire band of the hawk I guess 🙄
A NOTP I have with said character: Farnese. Post-eclipse Griffith/Femto. A lot of the characters. If Guts ever has a sex scene imagine me shaking my head and tutting to show I disagree with it
A random headcanon: Ofc Guts is traumatised that’s obvious. But I think his rage comes from unprocessed abandonment issues. He’s constantly in a heightened state of fear and unease so small things push him into anger as a defence mechanism. I don’t think he’s an intrinsically angry person, I think it’s his way of protecting himself. He gets so incredibly, incredibly upset at himself when he rages at the people he cares about because he pushes people away and creates the very situation he’s terrified of
General Opinion over said character: He’s the worst man in the world. He’s my best friend. Reading about Guts Berserk’s horrific life inspired me to get my own life together for two weeks then I got lazy and it went back to normal
My friend Lennox
Sexuality Headcanon: Bisexual!!!! And everyone wants him
Gender Headcanon: Transgender man. He’s been on hrt for around 7 years. Can’t be bothered with surgery
A ship I have with said character: Lennoxbaize truthers where are you?!?!? I’m joking ok ok. hanging my head in shame. Crow. It’s not healthy for either of them. I could discuss this for hours, but I won’t. Lennox can’t stand by and let Crow kill people, but he can’t intervene without putting the both of them in serious danger. Am I using this guy like everyone else or do I genuinely care about him and what does that mean for me and my culpability. Am I becoming complicit in the oppressive system I intended to disrupt etc etc. The amount of turmoil and guilt here. It’s palpable. Anyway we all know the only true ending for Crow is death. So whatever. Does any of this even matter
A BROTP I have with said character: Kaleela!!!!! They’re friends :) They really do care and try to look out for each other. I think they’re the only true friendship in the main cast. That’s so sad but I’m glad it’s them <3 Welcome to werewolf story everyone is miserable everyone has an ulterior motive everyone is so deeply horrifically flawed but kaleela and lennox are friends so its all ok
A NOTP I have with said character: These should be fairly obvious but Kaleela, Dashwood, Matthew, Romulus, William. I’m probably forgetting someone
A random canon: Errrr I’m not sure. His mum calls him Lenny and it embarrasses him. He once bought one of those expensive replica lightsabers. His brother and him used to watch sport on tv together when they were younger (mostly football and cricket)
General Opinion over said character: I love him SO MUCH. I know I created him but he’s so much fun I love him to death. He’s so good to write for I love thinking about him

berk..... and uuuuh? pmmm for the ask game
ITS BERK TIME BABYYYY
Fav male character:
Guts and Griffith about equally but Guts means more to me emotionally bc well. He’s just like me fr (abuse victim).
Fav female character:
I would lay down my life for Casca I think.
Least fav:
I wish Wyald from the manga. Was not.
Prettiest character:
I want to put Griffith in my mouth where he will dissolve like a meltaway mint.
Funniest character:
Corkus!! I know lots of folks don’t like him but he’s funny when he’s comic relief while also being a complex and tragic character. I like him.
Also Puck is a funny little guy and I love when he’s a little blob thing next to a super detailed drawing of Guts.
Favorite season (arc):
I will need to finish reading the whole manga before I can answer this. However. The golden age arc has Casca.
Favorite episode:
Episode 24 of the ‘97 anime. The moment where Griffith sees Guts and makes the decision to sacrifice is like…maybe my favorite moment in the series? I could write an essay on it.
Also Wounds from the manga means a lot 2 me.
Favorite romantic ship:
Casguts in the “they invented love and it’s one of the best developed relationships I’ve seen I just want these two traumatized people to find comfort and strength in each other let them be happy please god” and griffguts in the “this is so horrific and toxic and complex and there’s so much present classical homoerotic subtext here I need to dissect it in a lab and write a 20 page paper with citations about it” way.
Fav family relationship:
Band of the Hawk. The whole thing.
Fav friendship:
Judeau’s friendship with Casca and with Guts idk I like it. I like Judeau very much.
Least favorite ship:
I do not know what ppl in this fandom are shipping and I do not care.
PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA
this show made me gay when I was 14. There are a lot of valid critiques of it but it’s not for you it was for me when I was 14 and trying to figure out if liked girls.
Fav male character:
Lol there are no important men. Kyubey gets called “he” in most translations but kyubey is not a boy. Begone.
Fav female character:
Sayaka i love her more than anything. She is the first fictional character I ever related to which should have let me know I needed mega therapy and also to transition but that took me a while. She is so tragic and her arc devastates me every time.
Least fav character:
I’m going to throw Kyubey off a bridge.
Prettiest character:
I’ve been answering this in the sexual lust sense but I just mean it in the aesthetic sense bc all of the characters. Are. 14. Homura has a very nice design.
Funniest character:
There’s not a lot of comedy!! Kyoko I guess?
Fav season:
It is 12 episodes.
Fav episode:
Episode 9. It makes me cry like a little baby every single time I watch the series.
Fav romantic ship:
Kyosaya is the fucking blueprint for me man. In the owl house answer I did with this ask game I mentioned the kinds of ships that were important to me when I was a baby gay? I meant Kyosaya basically. It has everything. Rivals with attempted friendship. Red/blue. Opposites. Tragedy. It is. The blueprint.
Fav family relationship:
I know the spirit of this is found family but Madoka and her mom really get me man!!!
Fav friendship:
Madoka and Sayaka. They clearly care about each other a lot and it is SO SAD.
Least fav ship:
See my berk answer.

character opinion bingo: got done dirty by the creator
I'd usually don't like lingering in these kind of discussion, much rather look at the good and celebrate what I like
But continuing with the Berserk theme, man Casca is so frustrating, even when she's at her best in the Golden Age, it is so clear that she is a supporting character and never a protagonist in her own right
Like even removing the Eclipse and the fundamental problems built into it, it really feels like her main function is to get naked, threatened, and then rescued, I actually feel like the sexual abuse is a significant theme of Berserk that can be done respectfully and interesting as long as it focuses on our male characters, but when it comes to the women and Casca especially, it always takes this pornographic angle
It really wasn't until I engaged with other fan readings that I was able to feel more than pity, like I usually latch onto the poorly treated female lead, but man even for such a seminal work, Casca was let down in so many ways
#berserk#thanks for the ask!!#lol two heated opinions in a row#but I've gotten very selective over only engaging with media that feels worthwhile#and so most of these I end up loving a lot#while berserk I definitely respect and see the artistic intent but still don't fully vibe with for various reasons

Berserk Redux is awesome and here’s why
If you already like Berserk or you want an interesting way to get into it, Berserk Redux is one of the best fanedits you could ever find!
Made by ApostleBob, the edit started off as an attempt to mix the 1997 Berserk anime with the Golden Age movies. The first four “movies” are devoted exclusively to this storyline, and for my money, the editor succeeded at using the best of both sources to craft their project. My biggest issues with the Golden Age movies was that in condensing the manga the pacing felt off and important bits of character development were lost. Well, Redux adds plenty of scenes from the anime that solves that problem. However, plenty of Golden Age movie material was kept as well, certain well done key scenes and plenty of battles were used so that the Chapters still feel properly paced as movies. It can be jarring to sit through since the aspect ratio and the sources are from different eras, but the audio mixing is so fantastic that I got used to it pretty quickly, especially since many of the voice actors are the same between the dubs. The extra space and the added scenes help complete the story.
My favorite piece of editing is during the 100 man battle. ApostleBob used well timed and executed edits to add characters back into the fight and make these battles longer, allowing Guts and Casca to come across as more badass when they’re tearing down Adon’s forces. You feel the struggle Guts is going through when he’s killing these guys, since we hear his thought process from the anime as well. The sources compliment each other so well that it felt coherent in spite of the differences in presentation. Another thing I like in terms of structure is that the first Chapter, covering Guts getting recruited into the Band of the Hawk right up until Guts and Casca overhearing Griffith at the fountain, gives you little bread crumbs of Guts’ backstory throughout the movie instead of handing it over right away. You see the hazy flashbacks from the Golden Age films before we see the deeper flashbacks from the 97 anime, each positioned at exactly the right points in the narrative to make an impact. It’s incredible.
Redux doesn’t just cover the Golden Age arc however. Eventually, the scope expanded to include the story after that, using Berserk 2016 while adding some bits of 97 Berserk and the Band of the Hawk game to plug in plot holes 2016 created with the material it cut. The chapter that covers the Black Swordsman for example includes a scene Casca giving birth to the Demon Child (which was never explained in 2016), the Snake Baron subplot and redubbed lines from Puck to establish he can heal people, while cutting out the evil tree to avoid upstaging the Snake Baron fight. Later chapters continue doing this, and it’s this effort that makes it one of the most impressive fanedits out there.
Do I have problems? Well, yeah. Some of these come down to personal preference, such as preferring the anime’s version of the Eclipse while Redux mostly used the movie version with added bits. Redux makes the best use of the material possible and makes various tweaks across to the board to make it more bearable, but it doesn’t change the fact that a good chunk of it is still Berserk 2016. If you hated that series, then there’s no real way around the bad animation and different dub actors. In terms of editing, the first Nosferatu Zodd fight is my least favorite part of Redux. Neither version of the fight was all that great, ApostleBob did the best they could with it, but the mixing doesn’t work due to the different environments and animation styles clashing harder than normal, resulting in a harsher tone whiplash during the encounter. It’s an unavoidable blemish on an otherwise great edit but it’s there.
Berserk 1997 is a great anime, perfect for the Golden Age storyline, but if you want to see more or less what the rest of the story looks like, and you don’t feel the need to read the manga, then Berserk Redux is perfect. For casual fans, this can serve as a good entry point and for old fans this is a new way to experience the story. I recommend it.

My Top 15 Anime of the Decade
So I’ve seen a few people do their top animes of the decade, so I figured I’d make one too. My list will include both anime series, OVAs, and films as I haven’t seen enough in all three catergories to make top 10-15 lists for each one. Also keep in mind these are series I have seen, so chances are there’s series or film you’ve seen and liked will not be on this list. There will be spoilers for these anime, so look away if you don’t want any for the series in the tags below.
Rules:
1. The series, OVA, or film must have be created between 2010-2019 and can’t be a continuation of a series made in previous decades (so sadly BLEACH and FMA: Brotherhood can’t make this list :( )
2. Remakes of series or direct sequels to series from previous decades can be included, just so long as they were made btween 2010-2019.
3. It has to be a series I saw all the way through the decade, with seasons (not necessarily the story itself) being completed by the end of 2019 (so sadly I won’t be including Made in Abyss, Psycho Pass or Kimetsu no Yaiba as I haven’t finished watching any of them)
Honourable mentions: Erased (2015), Sweetness and Lightning (2016), March Comes in Like a Lion (2016-2018), One Punch Man (2015), Arrietty (2010), Yuri!!! On Ice (2017), Tiger & Bunny, Parasyte: The Maxim (2014), 91 Days (2016), The Anicent Magus Bride (2017), The Promised Neverland (2019), The Boy & the Beast (2015), Mirai (2018), Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail (2010-2011), Zankyou no Terror (2014), and Cells at Work! (2018).
____________________________________________________
15. Deadman Wonderland (2011)
Deadman Wonderland was one of the first anime series I saw in the decade. Because of it’s weak ’go read the manga’ ending, I almost didn’t put it on the list. However, after rewatching it, I remembered exactly what I liked about it: the great bromance between Ganta and Senji, the crazy twist and turns in the story and fights, and it’s memorable opening.
14. Violet Evergarden (2018)
Some have said this show was one of KyoAni’s greatest accomplishments in terms of animation and style, and I whole-heartedly agree. Aside from the goregous animation and colours, the show has beautiful music, an intriguing main character in Violet, and a few well crafted stand alone episodes (my favourite being episode 10).
13. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc (2012-2013)
The film trilogy that got me into one of the best manga ever created. Some of the CGI is a bit shoddy in the beginning, but gets better by the last film (and is heck of a lot better then 2016 series). Although it doesn’t capture the full spectrum of emotion, grit, and bad-assery of the manga, these films still do a good job at telling the essential story of the Golden Age arc. Of course, the infamous Eclipse scene is brought to life in all it’s horrifying glory, and the final scene in the last film - where Guts has that darn hopeful smile when he sees Casca after all the crap they’ve been through - makes me cry every single time.
12. Kids on the Slope (2012)
I didn’t expect to like this show as much as I did. I expected a standard coming of age story, and what I got in the end was a great slice of life anime with some catchy music. I remember being in awe of the animation for the drum and piano playing sequences and how well they matched up with what was recorded. It also made me really interested in what Japan was like during the 1960s, and I even went on to do a bit of reading about it.
11. Your Name (2016)
It’s hard to believe this film only came out three years ago. This film is still a marvel to behold. The animation and style is still breath-taking (just look at the backgrounds!), the story is engrossing, and it’s probably my favourite film from Makoto Shinkai.
10. Death Parade (2015)
I can’t believe it’s taken me this long watch this one. Death Parade has always interested me, but it wasn’t until the middle of this year that I finally sat down to watch it. I ended up binging the whole show over the course of two days. It’s strong in it’s visuals and concepts, and I consider Decim one of my favourite anime male characters. Oh, and of course, that opening is gosh darn catchy as hell (and an ending that’s just as good on my opinion)!
9. Shingeki no Kyojin (2013-ongoing)
There’s no doubting the massive impact this series had on the anime community and beyond when the first season started airing. Everytime the studio has brought their A-game for the animation; even to this day, I still watch the vertical maneuvering gear sequences from all the way back in season 1 in complete awe. Every opening just gets me pumped up before the episode has begun and a few other pieces of music are memorable. The characters have gotten better with each season and the story is unfolded damn near masterfully.
8. Boku no Hero Academia (2016-ongoing)
The classic shounen that builds on the conventional tropes of the genre. It’s given the community some of the most memorable fight scenes in recent anime history - like the fight between All Might and All for One O_O. This has been a series that’s gotten better as it goes along, building up a likeable cast of heroes, a complex villian in Shigaraki, and an interesting world. In particular, I’ve come to really like the conflict within the Todoroki family (including whether or not Dabi is a Todoroki) and the dynamics between the students in class 1 A.
7. Fruits Basket (2019- ongoing)
It’s good to be watching this series again! It’s even better to see previously excluded scenes finally get animated. What can I say that hasn’t already been said? The characters are quirky, relateable, and so full of life, the animation and visuals are stunning, and once again, Tohru is my favourite anime character of all time.
6. Anohana (2011)
I first saw Anohana before it boomed into popularity. I knew after finishing it that it wouldn’t take long before it gained a large following. The characters are believeable and relateable, and the story is compelling from start to finish. To this day, the final episode and the ending theme song bring a tear to my eye.
5. A Silent Voice (2016)
I have to admit, I was surprised when I heard A Silent Voice was going to be a movie. I didn’t think they’d be able to fit in everything essential to the story into a film; I was thankfully proven wrong. With KyoAni’s signature stunning visuals and animation, the story and it’s characters is just as poignant as they were in the manga. Shoko and Shoya are fantastic characters, and their complex relationship tugs at the heart-strings. I also just love seeing sign lanuage animated and being used in anime.
4. Wolf Children (2012)
Oh this film ;w; I went to see this with a few friends and had no idea what I was in for. Hana is an inspiring character, her relationship with the Wolf Man is the emotional equivalent of the first ten minutes of Up, and Ame and Yuki are such cute kids. The dynamic between Hana and her children made them feel like genuine family. It also has my favourite anime soundtrack of the decade, and I’ve pop in the CD at least twice a year since I’ve seen it.
3. Devilman: Crybaby (2018)
Oh wow this show! The emotions were high, the action packed a punch, and the visuals were the best combination of wacky and horrifying. I barely knew anything about the original Devilman, so a lot of what happened in this show came as a shock to me - a pleasent one at that. Akira sent me on an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish, as did his relationship with Miki. Despite the awful things Ryo did and how much I came to hate him, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him in the final scene (where he finally learned that emotons, the one thing he denounced, weren’t a weakness...a lesson that comes too little too late). I don’t think I’ll ever forget the last two episodes for as long as I live ;_;
2. Ore Monogatari!! (2015)
This show came at a time in my life when I needed just pure fluff and sweetness, and it delivered that in spades. It’s a breath of fresh air in the shoujo genre, with so many tropes being flipped on their head . I adore everyhting about this show, from it’s characters to it’s comedy. Takeo and Sunakawa have the greatest bromance in all of anime, Yamato and Takeo are so friggin’ sweet together, and the whole cast is just so likeable. It’s an anime I always come back to when I need something light and fluffy to watch, and is one of the first shows I recommend people who want to get into anime.
1. Mob Psycho 100 (2015-ongoing)
I knew from the scene in the gif that I would stick with this series, and I was most certainly not disappointed. Mob Psycho is a gem of an anime that I think everyone at least has to give a try. The animation and visual style are unique, using One’s simplistic character designs and switching between 2d, glass painting animation, and shots like one in the gif above. I love the message the series promotes, as seen in the main character who strives to better himself personally rather then rely on his powers. Mob is one of my favourite character of all time, and Reigen is one of the funniest, most dynamic characters I’ve seen in a while; I love seeing these two help each other develop and grow, and how their relationship of mentor-apprentice flips back and forth between them (in one episode Mob has something to learn from Reigen, but a few episodes later, it’s actually Reigen who learned something from Mob). Finally, there’s the awesome battles and fight scenes, which made my jaw drop to the floor one minute, and had me an emotional wreck the next. If you haven’t already, go watch this anime!

I see a lot of people praise caska for being an amazing female character but I kinda feel like she’s written like a bad joke about women (looses battle because period, too emotional, told her role is to comfort guts, etc...) she doesn’t get much time to really shine as a fighter either bc she’s constantly being saved of course I love her and will always defend her but do u think she’s actually written well as a girl? I feel like I’d be lying if I praised her for it
Hello and thanks for the ask!
No offense but I mean…
Let’s put it into perspective. There is a reason why Casca during the Golden Age was written the way she was, and I don’t think it’s necessarily bad writing. Some (questionable) views about women were expressed that way, but I’d like to think that’s more because of the time the Golden Age was written in, rather than because of malicious intent.
During the Black Swordsman Arc we were shown how Guts handled those who were weak: He absolutely detested them.
During the Golden Age we were shown how he dealt with other’s weakness (Casca’s) and also *why* he hated the weak during his Black Swordsman Arc days: During the Eclipse, the Hawks all died because they were weak, and Casca was violated and lost her mind because she could not defend herself either. (The irony of this is that both of these things all happened because of his best efforts to save Griffith, boyo was too distracted)
Black Swordsman Arc
Guts generally was very contempt towards those he considered weak, and also especially towards other men, e.g. Vargas whom he just let die. Another time someone weaker than him died, it was the priests’ daughter, who was slaughtered by evil spirits. He also felt remorse killing her possessed body, even then and also vomits later on (he always vomits when he hurts a child or girl, see Adonis, see killing the fire children in the lost children chapters). In the page below, bottom panel, you can see white sprinkles which I believe are tears.
He then goes on to say how he cannot bother to crush ants below his feet when he walks. That was his way of dealing with the sadness, getting someone who is weaker than him killed because of him. His love-hate relationship to weaker people was also shown to us by his interactions with Theresia: in some way, he did save her here from falling off the ruins. But she had to hold onto a sharp blade so she wouldn’t fall.
Guts was hurting someone who he would love to protect, and he also hated himself for it. He made Theresia go down the very same path like he did because revenge is the only way to give her something to hold onto after losing everything.
It reminded of his own suffering, losing the Hawks and Casca. At least, this is the conclusion I made when I read the Golden Age and then look back to the Black Swordsman arc.
Golden Age
When Casca was later introduced during the Golden age, IMO Kentaro Miura wanted to show us how Guts usually treated people. As it turns out, Guts does want to protect and make sure people are safe. He also listens to them trying his best to meet their expectations. In other words, he was not always an asshole. In regards to other people’s weaknesses, his treatment of Casca was still rough in the beginning, but at the very least imo, well-intentioned.
Now you can critique Miura for his display of Casca’s womanhood. I am personally not particularly bothered by it, especially if this situation is a set up for romance in the first place. Of course the protagonist is going to take note of another character’s feminity if the author plans to hook them up. Guts was confronted with Casca’s female problems (periods) and what we were shown is that Guts, while he may have had his preconceptions about women too, still is understanding of their struggles AND their weakness.
Like… he first gets upset at Casca, but then acknowledges that she doesn’t have it easy, dealing with her own problems and emotions at times (Casca is a VERY emotional personality, too, but usually she has more self-control than this).
If anything, this bit right here displays Guts’ willingness to change his mind, his capacity to understand others and also help them in the process. Empathy, compassion, y’know? Something he lacked during the Black Swordsman Arc (this here happens right before Vargas is being beheaded):
That being said, I don’t think Miura actually thought that women being emotional is a negative thing when he wrote this, but he may have been affected by negative (cultural?) bias.
In the face of that weakness, Guts tries to help Casca out where he can and be supportive of her, e.g. by protecting her from Adon and his men - the 100 Man slayer scene was basically Guts protecting Casca’s womanhood from thirsty mercenaries, while she COULD NOT defend herself as effective because of her state (and he does that DESPITE of Casca throwing a knife at him earlier). This theme also repeats during the Eclipse, however, here he could do nothing but watch in his own helplessness.
Also let it be said that Miura’s potrayal of Casca’s period isn’t too far off, because periods CAN knock you the fuck out like that. My last one was absolutely devastating and I wouldn’t have survived without taking pain meds. So can periods affect your capacity to fight? Yes, they definitely can. You also gotta consider that Miura is male, and males *usually* do not know the effects of periods in detail unless they confronted themselves with it; also consider the Golden Age was written in the 90s, so that topic wasn’t prevalent for men at all.
Contrast & Comparison as writing tool
Miura also set up a nice contrast by adding in a particularly sexist character: of course I’m talking about Adon.
Adon calls Guts a fool for protecting someone at the cost of his own well-being, and the way he talks it’s like saving multiple women and exploit them is normal and acceptable.
But: Guts is literally taking multiple arrow shots for Casca and does not ask for anything in return. (It’s also interesting to note that through Adon’s mockery Casca realizes what Guts is doing for her) Now, you could argue that Guts is still a sexist asshole, however, at least in comparison to Adon, Guts still appears like the good guy You can critique the ideas about women, how their prejudices and problems they struggle with are depicted, yes, and imo it is valid critique, too. But creating comparisons by showing how differently the characters act or think in the same scene is still an effective way of story-telling.
What Miura later did with other female characters, like Farnese or Schierke, was to “mature up” his writing. His tools however, stayed the same.
More examples comes to mind:
Guts leaving the Hawks
When Guts leaves the hawks, Griffith, Guts, Casca and Judeau all hold monologues, depicting how differently they think. While Casca and Rickert view the Hawks as family, Judeau still considers them a mercenary band, and Griffith treats his subordinate Guts like a possession and has no inhibition to kill him if it meant he would either not leave or not join another faction and potentially become his enemy. I wrote about this in more detail here on my website
Conviction Arc Farnese
The contrasting happens again when Miura makes Guts meet Farnese for the first time. He was captured by the Holy Iron Chain Knights.
Farnese treated Guts pretty badly: she whipped him out in a desperate attempt to assure dominance, then threw him outside into the cold so he would eventually freeze to death.
When Guts takes HER hostage, they switch roles. Surely, he is being rough to her, but at the same time, is saving her multiple times, e.g. from falling to death or evil spirits.
This is the same writing tool used, just filled with different ideas. Miura’s writing itself hasn’t changed.
Casca is not powerless
Also Casca indeed is capable of defending herself. She is NOT always being saved. Even when being pursued after escaping from the 100 Man Slayer Scene, she gave the pursuing mercenaries a hard time, e.g. ramming a branch into one of the merc’s eyes. In that scene, it didn’t look like Casca was losing, she just got herself out of a dangerous situation and leaps to grab her sword! Only THEN we see how a volley of arrows interrupts the fight. Does this look like a Casca to you that is about to lose? It doesn’t to me. She could have easily defeated the other two pursuers all by herself.
Casca, NOT GUTS, later defeated Adon all by herself and she was at a disadvantage too (think the poison dart).
Even during the Eclipse she dealt the final blow to take down the apostle that killed Judeau. She is not being depicted as powerless at all. She always seems at a disadvantage, struggling against all odds, and *still* is victorious. Guts acknowledges the strength it takes for her to do what she does, and that’s why Guts is helping her as much as he can.
Now you could STILL say “omg but that’s still sexist”, but eh. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging someone else’s struggle, celebrating them for pulling through despite of all the obstacles, and also willing to help out, but I’ll keep that politics stuff for another post. Stuff like this can go wrong yes, but in either case and as far as I am concerned, Guts is not trying to be patronizing or strip her off her independence in any way.
However, Casca’s strength does have limits and her full strength was not shown to us either, but I’d like to think that’s mostly because she is more a side-character and didn’t have much chance to shine during the Golden Age. I really really hope that will change with future chapters.
TL;DR Just because an author expresses outdated ideas or ideas you disagree with, does not mean it’s bad writing.

After a failed attempt to enter Izumi's body through the ear, the creatures get in him with his arms' help. The story then moves on to a different level by giving Izumi a new distorted self. It also shows how even in such a crisis, two minds of two people can become one through a sacred thing called love. The show is a horror, sci-fi, and anime series. However, one day he experiences how Griffith, their leader, selfishly killed his followers and dreams of taking total control of the kingdom. Hello mr. vortex. I stopped reading berserk somewhere around the end of the golden age arc b/c i didn't like how nearly every main character (especially the ladies) get abused sexually. I didn't know it was supposed to be a commentary on how female characters are treated or anything, so would it be worth continuing to read berserk if I'm uncomfortable with that kind of stuff being played straight? Big McThankies
if you’re really uncomfortable with or react badly to depictions sexual assault im not sure if you should read berserk, because there’s a lot of it. however i think at the most important points miura handles the subject well, as in he portrays it accurately as not a sexual act but an act of violence / control - something that is really important for the characterization of casca, griffith, and guts who struggle with not being able to control their fate.casca embraces her vulnerability and finds strength in a shared vulnerability among other people who have not yet been introduced if you stopped reading at the end of the golden age arc. guts and griffith, on the other hand, lament their inability to control their fate and so they instead resort to exerting control / power over women, namely casca. im not gonna say that’s definitely a statement about toxic masculinity, but miura seems like a smart guy so i doubt it was accidental.however at a lot of the other, less important moments in the story, rape is used really… lazily as a plot device. it’s often used to establish that certain minor characters are villains, without being respectful of the weight of an event like that by using it so lightly. at its worst, i think sometimes it’s even just used as an excuse to draw women naked to satisfy the publisher (berserk is published in what is essentially a porno mag). also, while i think the way casca acts after the golden age arc was a good decision in many ways, just as often her portrayal is degrading and disrespectful, namely to the mentally ill.i think the worst mistake miura made is casca’s treatment during the Wyald arc. there was no reason for that, plotwise, and it came off as really disgusting and voyeuristic. there’s a reason they cut that part of the story out of every adaption of berserk.however, something that again hasn’t happened yet for you if you only read up to the end of the golden age arc is the skull knight’s claim that what guts wants for casca is not necessarily what casca wants. this hasn’t been fully elaborated on yet, but i doubt it’s simply casca finding bliss in ignorance or whatever. guts has this expectation that casca will be head over heels in love with him again as soon as he can “fix her”, but skull knight’s statement really kind of shatters his perception of his relationship with casca.what is so important about this statement is that skull knight points out something that guts could have never realized alone - casca is in the situation she is in because a man (griffith) felt entitled to have control over her. though his intentions are well-meant, guts is attempting to fix this problem by… exerting his will over casca, and controlling her. because he thinks it’s what is best for her. i think you get the picture.
that was kind of a long response but basically i think berserk is worth reading, though the story really benefits from, or maybe even requires, viewing it in a context such as this(also i can't tag this post on mobile so i apologize in advance for the long post)

Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the King
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I – The Egg of the King
Guts, an immensely strong sword-for-hire, has little direction in his life, simply fighting one battle after the next. However, this all changes suddenly when he meets and is bested by Griffith, a beautiful and charismatic young man who leads the Band of the Hawk mercenary army. After Guts joins the Band and the relationship between the two men begins to blossom, Casca, the tough, lone…

I saw that one really long tumblr ask involving Casca and Griffguts so I wanted to add a different perspective. At this point from a narrative standpoint I am personally more annoyed with how Casca was treated after the eclipse than during the eclipse. The eclipse was an event specifically designed to put the band of the hawk through the worst suffering possible so the horrible stuff that happened to Casca had a purpose. What I don't like is that Casca's regression was never used as an opportunity to explore more of her character. Even if she had regressed to the point of a two year old she would've still had noticeable personality traits. Something as simple as giving her a favorite color or an object she really likes would've made so much of a difference in that regard. It would've made people reading the manga after the eclipse a little more sympathetic to Casca because they truly got to see bits of her. She clearly had basic emotions and instincts during her regression but it sucks that was never built upon.
Although I enjoy Gutsca, Golden Age Griffguts and Golden Age Griffgutsca I think Gutsca would be the best one to make canon. At this point I think Griffith has destroyed too much of himself to get the love he had wanted from Guts (and especially not from Casca if some interpretations are to be believed). In the canon of Berserk it wouldn't be fair for Guts to be with a man who traumatized him so completely unless the writers wanted to make a dark character study. At least with Casca they can mutually heal from the scars the sacrifice left. And even then Guts still has more growing to do if he doesn't want to destroy himself like Griffith did. It's honestly quite sad.
Also I really don't understand why people discredit the female characters of Berserk so much??? Even if there are hiccups in Casca's story she, Farnese and Charlotte are like my favorite characters in the series. They're all so well designed from a narrative perspective and they're also all just pretty neat. It's just sad that people in the fandom victim blame Casca. Or define her based off of Griffith or Guts. If anything her potential personal arc should culminate in her gaining more self esteem.
Yeah I get that, I think Casca's "character" post-Eclipse has been absolutely dismal writing, and honestly those are some good ideas for how the writing could've been imporved. I hate the regression concept in general, but it's true that it doesn't mean Casca needs to have absolutely no characterization beyond generic sexy baby and maternal instincts lol.
And tbf I don't think very many griffgutsers expect Guts and Griffith to end up together in a romantic capacity - a homoerotic emotional revelation followed by death seems to be the going theory in my circle at least, and that's what I'm pinning my hopes on. But when it comes to fanfic and headcanons, griffguts is straight up a lot more fun to me, so that's what I focus on.
Plus for me personally I'm not super interested in what the characters deserve, so I like the love still irrationally being there regardless of the Eclipse and Griffith's transformation, and I do think that's canon - platonic love at least. Guts' feelings are mixed, and the Beast of Darkness taunts him for longing for Griffith, and he still misses human Griffith, etc, and I think that suits the tone of the story very well. I don't think a happily ever after is likely to come from it, but a moment of catharsis where those feelings are untangled and likely still requited to an extent before a climactic death scene sounds right up my alley.
But yk, to each their own, there's room for a lot of different takes in the fandom.
As far as the female characters go, I think they're better than a lot of female characters in similar stories tbf, and I definitely love a lot of them, but I do think they're sometimes awkwardly written, and sometimes in misogynist ways (eg Casca's retconny suicide attempt, Farnese's total 180 from complicated fucked up pyromanic to caretaker after one montage, the vast majority of Berserk's women being motivated by crushes on men, etc). There's lots to love, but also lots to feel annoyed by imo, depending on what you're focused on, so I can't blame anyone who wants to complain about how Miura writes women, and I can't blame anyone who wholeheartedly loves the female characters either.
Anyway thanks for sharing your opinions as a counterpoint, it's good to hear different + thoughtful points of view, whether I agree with everything or not!

Berserk Manga is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series illustrated and written by Kentaro Miura. Place in a medieval Europe-divine the narrative centers on the characters of Guts dark fantasy world, a lone mercenary, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary group known as the Band of the Hawk. Motifs of camaraderie, isolation, as well as the question of whether mankind is basically good or bad pervade the narrative, as it investigates both the very best and worst of human nature. Both anime and the manga are noticed for their utilization of sexual content and heavy violence. Guts in Berserk manga The Hawks play a critical role in stopping the 100-year war which has ravaged the state of Midland and are initially welcomed as heroes, when Guts leaves the Hawks to seek out his own vision, but Griffith's aspirations to rule his own kingdom are shattered. Not able to deal together with the loss, Griffith leads to the dungeon to get a year and seduces the King's daughter Charlotte. From the time Guts helps the outlawed remnants of the Hawks and learns of this save him, Griffith left and has been terribly mutilated a mute shadow of his former self. Of understanding his body, the weight is too damaged for him to execute he inadvertently activates the behelit on his man and his wishes shows too much for Griffith. This brings the Hawks to a different airplane in the place where they fall upon archdemons known as the four God Hand in the service called the Eclipse. Urged on from the eldritch beings, Griffith gives his soldiers to the apostles–people like Zodd who lost mankind and their nearest and dearest for power of the God Hand –so he is able to end up being the closing member of the God Hand. Though he along with his lover Casca are saved from certain death by the mysterious Skull Knight labeled, Guts witnesses the savage slaughter of his comrades. Intestines loses an eye and an arm while Casca is driven mad after being raped by the reborn Griffith, now called Femto. Miura premiered a model of Berserk Manga in 1988. There, falling upon Farnese of the Holy Iron Chain Knights of the Holy See Church , Guts finds himself going through a nightmarish ordeal that finishes in the physical type restored of Griffith. Griffith creates another Band of the Hawk with Zodd as well as other Apostles among its ranks to fight the invading Kushan military as Guts takes Casca to the Elven kingdom of Elfhelm for safety together with the aid of his new comrades. The war between the Kushan emperor and Griffith, a rogue apostle, culminates using the emperor's destruction as well as the overlapping of the supernatural as well as the mortal world. No longer challenged by guy or devil, Griffith creates his rule using the sanction of the Pope and Princess Charlotte over Midland, creating the city of Falconia to give you safety to the Midlanders in the ever-increasing assaults of creatures that are fabulous Berserk manga transform to Anime Main characters in Berserk manga – Guts is is among the first companies that Guts makes during the latter's days as the Black Swordsman. fuck i just typed out a whole thing about the Berserk game
ANYWAY to whoever was asking me if it was worth it, you’re too far back in my activity to @ you directly i apologize. but i am answering as a Berserk fan and an (albeit new) Warriors fan who has only just completed the Golden Age Arc in the game which was about 20 missions long
pros: good visual design, one of the best musou games i’ve seen graphically and it works really well with Miura’s designs. also physically very cool, chopping through enemies feels a lot more visceral weighty in the game unlike in other Warriors titles where enemies are Japanese paper doors and you are a combine harvester. also, although it is juvenile, the excess blood and guts just makes it MORE FUN. it reminds me of Ninja Gaiden where you jump into a crowd of enemies one second and in the next emerge covered in guts as the last man standing, and speaking of Guts
cons: this game locks you into Guts about 80% of the time. now this could just be due to it being the first half of the game. making Casca, Griffith, Judeau, and Zodd the only other playable characters besides Guts when you AREN’T locked into Guts or are playing free mode makes sense in a i guess i don’t want to play as Corkus or Rickert kinda way(although not being able to play as Pippin seems like a missed opportunity). but this also calls into question that if the second half of the game does introduce Serpico and Shierke as playable characters maybe even Fernese and i mean shit yeah i’d play as Puck if they let me, that’s still not great variety. and Warriors games, which are already criticized for their variety, survive by their playable roster and the different playstyles therein. Miura’s script also does not end up untainted as many of the key scenes are replaced with standard battles that really just don’t make sense in context. i mean considering one of the most character changing moments for Guts in the series was a night of a 100 man battle that he won, it seems less impactful when he just killed 2000 with the flick of his wrist in the fight leading up to it. many of the cutscene are just footage of the films, which is fair enough, but of the in-engine cutscenes, while they start out fine, later on when the much more dramatic and intense scenes take place they just come across as silly. and so far the out of the boss fights i’ve encounters, plenty were bog standard while fighting Zodd was kinda rad, fighting Wyald was a pain in the ass because his attacks knocked you back 100 feet while not actually doing any damage so neither of you could kill each other for fucking years, and the fight with Femto (which in the series is a powerful moment showing Guts is powerlessness against these forces of darkness and not really a fight at all) you just grind out your super move 3 times to use it on him while you’re annoyingly reduced movement and attack speed debuff to Guts while you have to hunt down and strike a pedestal that’s causing it, that’s constantly teleporting from one place to another, like playing whack-a-mole while being tied to a bed.
NOW as i said before i’m only halfway through this debacle so who knows, maybe Shierke’s gameplay or the Berserker armor will liven things up in a great way, i wouldn’t know because you still have to trudge through the Golden Age arc to unlock any of that even in free play, but i plan on getting there regardless. if any of that makes it out for the better i’ll let you know, if there are more playable characters than i thought i will let you know. but until then i can’t really recommend this game. even if you are a HUGE Berserk fan i still don’t know if it’d be worth your $60, maybe wait until it’s cheaper, maybe rent it and check it out yourself. if you’re a Musou fan i can guarantee you’ve played better Musou games in your life, so only go for this one if you’ve always wanted to see what they’re like but on the mediocre end of them and full of GORE.
