Different mutations found in panthera (color-centric):
melanism
causes the overproduction of melanin, thus why "black panthers" (which, don't have to be entirely black) exist
leucism
the more "bleached" version of melanism (in simple words), resulting in white panthers (like that maltese tiger, who would, technically, be considered blue (maltesting) panthers) ; (partial albinism/cream have been reported)
albinism
complete opposite of melanism, causing a big cat to be pure white, rather than black, or its otherwise natural color!
chincilla
a mutation causing panthers to be almost complete white, but with pale markings! unlike albinism, where the animal is pure white
erythrism
a more red mutation that can result in pink-ish colored cat (leopard, in this case)... so we can call this one a pink panther! literally!
there's more, obviously, but these ones are inherently more common 🤗

Farbenleere

The Colorado Kid | Stephen King | Pubished 2005 | *SPOILERS*
Stephen King’s bestselling unsolved mystery, The Colorado Kid - inspiration for the TV series Haven - returns to bookstores for the first time in 10 years in an all-new illustrated edition.
On an island off the cost of Maine, a man is found dead. There’s no identification on the body. Only the dogged worked of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues, and it’s more than a year before the man is identified. And that’s just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...? No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammet’s The Maltest Falcon and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world’s great storytellers presents a moving and surprising tale whose subject is nothing less than the nature of mystery itself.
In the coast of Maine is a small island called Moose-Lookit Island. Typically not welcoming of outsiders, Stephanie McCann has been welcomed by the local newspapers editors, Dave Bowie and Vince Teague, both older gentlemen who had been in the newspaper industry for several years.
During a lunch meeting with a reporter for the Boston Globe hunting for stories for an unexplained mystery series, he leaves in a huff when he realizes that Vince and Dave don’t have any to provide for him that hadn’t already been told.
When they return to their offices, though, they discuss the discovery of the Colorado Kid. In April of 1980, two local teenagers, one of which would later become the town’s mayor, found an unidentified man on the beach early in the morning. Looking as if he had been dead for several hours by this point, the proper authorities are called in and it was determined that he died from aspyhixation by choking, which led to a stroke (or the other way around, it appears). He was found with a piece of steak lodged in his throat, with a few bites also found inside his stomach, along with the contents of what he had for dinner.
Evidence was taken from the scene, though he went identified for around 16 months or so before items from the evidence led to his identification. A young man who was working with the Attorney General’s office remembered a pack of cigarettes that had been found, though the tax stamp on the bottom didn’t resemble that of the state of Maine’s. There’s was an ink stamp, whereas the stamp on the pack found hadn’t been. Vince got in contact with the right people, and it was confirmed that the stamp on the bottom came from Colorado.
They ran his death portrait to every newspaper in Colorado, until eventually they got a call from the man’s wife. She explained that he had been missing since April of the year before, and she is certain that the man in the photo is her husband. She is flown to Maine, where Vince picks her up and helps her with the proper process of identifying and exhuming his body, and it is confirmed then that the man was a Mr. James Cogan, an advertising artist that lived in a mountain town outside of Boulder, who left behind his wife Arla and a young son named Michael.
Despite having identified him, they are still left with the reason behind his East coast visit. Arla could not shed any light on why he had been there, as he had departed their home for his office in Boulder that Wednesday morning, and had spoken with a colleague of his at 10:00 or so that morning before simply disappearing and reappearing on the coast. They have surmissed that he had chartered a flight from Colorado to Maine, and then was driven from Bangor to the coast, where he had dinner at 5:30 P.M. at a restaurant where a waitress remembered seeing him, before taking a ferry across the waters at 6:00 P.M. before being found on the beach 12 hours later.
Vince and Dave have been plagued with this story for over 25 years, and their questions are left largely unanswered. They never found out why he was there, and the questions have always bothered them. They shared this story with Stephanie, though a newcomer, has been accepted into the locals and she will remain there after her internship is complete a few months later in October. They didn’t want to share this story for the series as they would be looking for a beginning, a middle and an end, as many news stories do. Those are the happy ones with conclusions. This story did not have a happy ending, as there was never any ending at all, as the questions still burned them so many years later as to why the Colorado Kid was even in Maine to begin with.
I wanted to read this story because I was an avid fan of the television show, Haven, that uses this book’s premise for many plot points of the show. A lot of it is changed, though much remains the same, even if Stephanie’s character is replaced with a character named Audrey, and the Colorado Kid ends up being her son (SPOILER SPOILER). The book however, leaves much to the imagination and isn’t your typical Stephen King horror novel. I gave it 5/5 stars, and that concludes my May readings for the month!
