Reading the Käärijä Airbnb page is the best entertainment I've had in a while:

First of all this profile picture kills me, but I don't believe for a second that he is the one actually running this. Also has he been in airbnb business for 9 years??? New Kääeijä lore? (i mean not surprised technically because he has investment housing)

I love the fact that even when he is doing this fr he is still being goofy about it. At least we know he wrote this himself by the mistakes. So on brand. "have you ever think" my gos. Love how he wrote Malmi without capitalization.

First of all it's so ironic that the silence DOESN'T start at 23:00, it would've been so iconic. Also Käärijä no pets or smoking.

Second of all: It's so funny to me that no parties are allowed in the crazy party cha cha cha man's house. No fun allowed lmoa. (But for real It's wise to have this rule, I'm just amused by the contrast)

AND LASTLY propably the biggest bonus of them all, the house has FREE PARKING, now this is what sells me the house and I don't even have a car.

Also I checked the prizes and it seems to be between 200-360€ (ish) euros per night. I'm not saying he is asking unreasonable price. I am saying however that Kääryleet are broke so he better not expect fans to flock the appartment.

Fun fact: The common pheasant (fasaani in finnish) which today can regularly be seen in finnish urban areas in the coast, is in fact not native to finnish nature, but introduced.

Karl Fazer (father of the famous Fazer chocolate and the candy company) brought pheasants from Germany in 1901-1902 and released them to the nature in Malmi (currently part of Helsinki, but back then part of Vantaa, which was called "Helsingin maalaiskunta at the time). Pheasants were released in other cites as well and there is still a common pheasant population living in the coastal areas of Finland.

This is why every time I see a common pheasant somewhere I think of Karl Fazer and how insane it is that this bird is walking there in 2023 because of one rich candy maker in the early 1900s.

I will now think of Karl Fazer everytime I see a pheasant ANYWHERE now hahaha! Thank you so much that's exactly the kind of stuff I love to know!!

Last Friday Finland's electricity market was turned upside down when a Norwegian energy firm erroneously offered huge amounts of non-existent electricity on the Nordpool market.

That forced the spot price down as low as -50 cents, meaning that any consumer on a spot price contract was able to make money just by turning on their household appliances.

Happy days for the end user, but energy market participants were less than pleased.

Financial daily Kauppalehti takes a very serious look at the problem in an editorial, suggesting that the Nordic countries might need to introduce an emergency brake mechanism to flatten out peaks and troughs in energy prices in the future.

The energy price is calculated each day by Nordpool, after it takes in bids from energy producers based on what they expect to produce and matches that against the expected demand.

In other parts of Europe the market holds a 'Second auction' if the prices are too low or too high. That allows producers to offer more or less energy once they see what the price is likely to be, thereby raising or lowering it.

In the Nordics that doesn't happen, even though it was proposed in 2015. KL suggests that might be because energy producers primarily thought about the possible reductions in price it might bring when prices would otherwise be high.

They preferred to rely on market mechanisms forcing reductions in consumption, and never really considered what might happen if there was a mistake and they had to source electricity to sell at a loss — as happened on Friday.

School dinner waste reductions

Aamulehti has a look at moves by Tampere region municipalities to reduce food waste in daycare centres and schools.

This food is produced by Pirkanmaan Voimia, a company owned by several councils in the area. They had noticed that a lot of food was getting thrown away, and asked schools and daycare centres to try and reduce their orders to reflect the amounts that are actually consumed.

Institutions can assume a certain level of absences based on sickness and other issues, and getting better at predicting those means there is less food thrown away after lunch.

Since the food waste drive started in 2022 orders have reduced by some 4-8 percent, depending on the institution.

That has caused some issues as most schools allow children to serve their food themselves from the lunch counter.

When popular foods are on offer, like fish fingers or similar, food can run out, according to Tampere's head of basic education Kristiina Järvelä.

"There is a recommended portion size, but there's always someone who takes 25 meatballs even though the order is based on 5 meatballs each," says Järvelä. "There is however always backup food [in the school's kitchen], so nobody is left hungry."

It's crazy, it's rental

Helsingin Sanomat reports on a new addition to Helsinki's holiday rental scene: the studio apartment that was home to Eurovision star Käärijä before he was famous.

Located in the rough and ready northern suburb of Malmi, the flat is decked out in Käärijä's trademark green and decorated with a painting of the man himself in his iconic bolero.

The advert text even uses the artist's trademark, endearing Finglish.

"Have you ever think how I live once in Malmi? Now you can come and feel yourself how it feels. Yes Yes I know you will like," reads the description.

This unique experience does not come cheap, however: HS reports that the price for an upcoming weekend would be 764 euros per night.

Käärijä himself (real name Jere Pöyhönen) was granted a rental apartment in Vantaa free of charge for one year as a recognition of his Eurovision achievements, allowing his former home to become a city break destination.

Lieutenant Aarne Juutilainen at Suojärvi, Ladoga Karelia, December 1, 1939.

Aarne Juutilainen (1904-1976) was Finnish army officer who served in the French Foreign Legion in Morocco between 1930 and 1935 and earned his nickname "Terror of Morocco". After returning to Finland he served in the Finnish army and fought in the Winter, Continuation and Lapland War.

Juutilainen was a legendary Finnish officer that is chiefly remembered for his exploits in the Battle of Kollaa. The Battle was fought from December 7, 1939, to March 13, 1940. Despite the Soviets fierce attempts, Kollaa held out until the end.

Afterwards, Lieutenant-Colonel and regiment commander Wilhelm Teittinen, who commanded IR 34 at the Kollaa Front, honored Juutilainen: "He created the Kollaa spirit".

When hearing of the Winter War peace terms which relinquished Karelia to the Soviet Union, the Sortavala-born Juutilainen buried his hands in his face and said with a quiet voice, "Karjala, my own Karjala."

Aarne Edward Juutilainen died an almost forgotten man on Thursday October 28, 1976 in Helsinki. He is buried in Malmi cemetery. In addition to his name and the date of his birth and death, a text has been carved into the stone:

"Marokon kauhu, kapteeni" (Terror of Morocco, Captain) •••••••• Luutnantti Aarne Juutilainen Suojärvellä, Laatokan Karjalassa, 1.12.1939

Aarne Juutilainen (1904-1976) oli talvi- ja jatkosodassa sekä Lapin sodassa palvellut suomalainen upseeri joka palveli vuosina 1930-1935 Ranskan muukalaislegioonassa, mistä sai lempinimen “Marokon kauhu”.

Talvisodassa Juutilainen toimi komppanianpäällikkönä Jalkaväkirykmentti 34:ssä Laatokan pohjoispuolella. Kollaanjoen varteen komppaniansa kanssa puolustukseen asettunutta Juutilaista pidetään yhtenä talvisodan hengen luojista. Viipurin rykmentin komentaja Wilhelm ”Sota-Ville” Teittinen onkin korostanut Aarne Juutilaisen osuutta koko Kollaan suunnan torjuntataisteluissa. Taistelut alkoivat 7. joulukuuta 1939 ja päättyivät 13. maaliskuuta 1940. Kollaa kesti talvisodan loppuun saakka.

Kun rauha tuli, Sortavalassa syntynyt Juutilainen tunnusti rauhanehtojen rikkoneen hänessä jotain lopullisesti: ”Hautasin kasvot käsiini ja sanoin hiljaisella äänellä: Karjalani, oma Karjalani”.

70-vuotissyntymäpäivänään vuonna 1974 Aarne Juutilainen kertoi Ilta-Sanomille, ettei palvelu legioonassa, eikä Saharan autiomaassa Marokon sodassa ollut yhtään mitään verrattuna Suomen talvisotaan, joka oli äärimmäisen epäinhimillinen päivästä toiseen.

Aarne Edward Juutilainen kuoli lähes unohdettuna miehenä torstaina lokakuun 28. päivänä vuonna 1976 Helsingissä. Hänen asetoverinsa ja ystävänsä, Mannerheim-ristin ritari, majuri Ahti Vuorensola kaiverrutti Malmin hautausmaalla Helsingissä sijaitsevaan hautakiveen Juutilaisen arvoksi sanat:
