Okay, I apologize, is my reading card taken away if I totally and entirely chose to read this graphic novel because of the cover. It just called to me.

The book is set in a fantastical 15th century West Africa. Where Malika is the Queen and military commander of her empire, Azzaz. That empire had been split in half, and, she is trying to combine it as one big Azzaz again. That’s not going to be easy though. Especially as she has to go up against one of the biggest superpowers in this universe, the Ming Dynasty. Can she fight and win all the different sorts of wars that are at her door?

I’ve loved most of the Wonder Woman graphic novels that I’ve ever read, so, trying out this series was a no-brainer (non-European based stories set in fantastical worlds). And such a fun fun read. The politics, the sibling stuff, and it was about a people and culture that I haven’t read a ton about, especially in the comics. Oh, and, this is sort of random, but, it’s such a nice and long collection too. Over 300 pages. So often, even the collections of comics these days are just 120 or so pages, and, I wind up wanting more. In this case, there is more (a second volume), but, this first volume also kept me busy reading for quite a long time (and not just a couple of hours).

Not knowing the difference between human genders, or what he was, Lantash doesn’t have a preference for his first host.

Together, the two of them later save Per’sus’ life.

Hrafn - Second Host - Year 792

A young warrior. Lantash enters the marriage with Hrafn’s wife, Rósa.

Datu - Third Host - Year 955

Lantash’s host when Egeria is lost in 998.

They marry Norak and Arada. The marriage ends with Datu’s death.

Madoc - Fourth Host - Year 1113

A young scholar who was rescued from a labor camp.

Marries Valak and Leksi.

Coşkun - Fifth Host - Year 1302

The marriage with Valak continues. After Leksi dies, Corr joined the marriage.

Sindri - Sixth Host - Year 1381

The marriage with Valak ends after Corr’s death.

Archard - Seventh Host - Year 1568

Lantash remarries Norak and Valak, and their new hosts, Javari and Helge.

Shortly after, Lantash goes missing to the Tok’ra. Archard is captured and tortured to death by locals on a planet.

Raven - Eighth Host - Year 1611

Raven was another prisoner when Archard is killed. 

After almost three years, Lantash makes it home. He attempts to renew his relationships with Norak and Valak, but Javari is too angry about Archard’s fate. Realizing that he is only hurting his husband, Lantash officially leaves the marriage.

It is with Kibar that Lantash first meets Selmak’s future host, Saroosh (1817).

Setta’s Age: 19 to 36

With Setta, Lantash begins courting Jolinar and Rosha. Unfortunately, Setta dies soon after.

A miner from Kiron. Martouf enters the relationship, and the four soon marry.

The Twelfth Host - Year 2006

Lantash is separated from Martouf for four months. They interact, but both have amnesia. After their memories return, Lantash reblends with Martouf.

Lantash and Viator travel from the future and briefly meet Lantash and Martouf.

1896 • His people are massacred. Martouf blends with Lantash. Only he and three others, Tur, Jordon, and Pekon, survive.  (Age 16)

1897 • Marries Jolinar and Rosha. (Age 17)

1953 • Promoted to Commander. (Age 73)

1989 • Participates in the Battle of Farra, an attack lead by Jolinar on Cronus. They are ambushed by Apophis.

• • • Mian/Jorda and Norak/Pekon are killed in the battle. (Age 109)

1997 • Rosha and Jolinar go missing. (Age 117) 

1998 • The Tau'ri find them. Martouf and Lantash learn that Rosha and Jolinar were killed. (Age 118)

2000 • Treaty with Tau'ri.

• • • Soon after the treaty, Martouf and Lantash go undercover. (Age 120)

2002 • They discover Goa’uld plans to attack the base on Revanna. They warn the Tok’ra to evacuate. (Age 122)

2004 • The Tau’ri treaty breaks. (Age 124)

2005 • Recalled when Relek and Tur are killed.

• • • Treaty reinstated. (Age 125)

2006 • Begins dating Sam. (Age 126)

2007 • They are cloned without their knowledge.

• • • Copy escape with Marshal and Lance. Martouf accepts them as his sons, but they don’t survive. (Age 127)

2008 • They marry Sam. (Age 128)

2011 • The Tok’ra learn that one of their own is a traitor.

• • • Sam rescues Iasis, a larva queen. Sam, already pregnant, blends with Kela’an on the condition that she be allowed to keep her child. Iasis is adopted.

• • • Lantash and Martouf are demoted for “fathering” a child.

• • • Several bases and outposts are attacked. Martouf and many others are forced to go into deep hiding. Hundreds are killed, and they lose contact with thousands more. (Age 131)

2012 • Malika is born. (Age 132)

2025 • Due to a death glider attack, Martouf loses his right eye and most of the fingers on his left hand. (Age 145)

2026 • Einar and Per’sus, who had been missing for over a year, return to the Tok’ra with symbiotes that they rescued. (Age 146)

2028 • Iasis and Malika blend. (Age 148)

2029 • Iasis gives birth to new Tok’ra and adopts most of the larvae that Per’sus rescued. (Age 149)

This past weekend was Virtuous Con 2024 an online sci-fi and comic culture convention. We attended the con as press and got to sit in on this panel. The panelists were Roye Okupe, Davis Steward II, Kerri Grant, and Brandon Easton, moderated by Karama Horne (TheBlerdGurl). This panel was a discussion about the upcoming animation series Iyanu premiering on Cartoon Network on the Max streaming platform. Iyanu: Child of Wonder is a graphic novel that is published by Dark Horse Comics and YouNeek Studios.

Roye Okupe an Animation Producer and founder of YouNeek Studios, the Award-Winning graphic novel publisher of Award-Winning stories such as Malika: Warrior Queen and Iyanu: Child of Wonder. Animation Writer and Producer Kerri Grant worked on the animation as well she’s known for her previous work on Doc McStuffins, Ada Twist Scientist, and The Backyardians just to name a few. Brandon Easton is the Lead Writer on the series he’s known for his work on Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy, Avengers Assemble, Hearthstone: Deadmines, and more.

David Steward II is the CEO and Founder of The Lion Forge Entertainment. Before embarking on the detailed world of Malika Warrior Queen, it is important to mention I am a movie nerd. Born and raised, action and adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, cartoon enthusiast, and aficionado. The last comic I read was probably in middle school and it was an Archie comic, (and yes, I have watched all of Riverdale)…

Our wonderful editors seek to challenge me and gave me this beautiful graphic novel, Black Nerd Problems, am I right?. At first, I was hesitant, I can be pretty judgmental, especially when it comes to movies, acting and things of that sort. This is a whole different world – and you know I’m going to take it on. Looking at Malika Warrior Queen, I immediately was taken back to my days reading Lord of the Rings. Viewing the well-established maps and origins of the land, intricacies of the separate provinces and kingdoms, I definitely felt in my element. It even gave me what LOTR couldn’t…Black people!

We begin with Malika as a young child practicing her knife-wielding technique as her mother, the queen, approaches inquiring where she has learned these skills. We quickly see Malika is a warrior prodigy and capable of joining a regime at an early age. The scene is set informing us Malika is not next in line as heir of the kingdom Azzaz, her older sister Nadia is slotted to be queen. As we cut to the present day we see the once young warrior is now queen, leaving us wondering how she had acquired the throne.

Malika is a great warrior and Queen, whose rule is tried and questioned after uniting the lands in one unified kingdom. The series is beautifully illustrated showing an elegant and strong depiction of the characters and rich lands. Reading on, it is clear the writers and creators have extensive knowledge of African and Asian history, as well as detailed knowledge of war and battle tactics. The novel is not only an intriguing fantasy but a learning experience for the reader.

YouNeek Studios Graphic Novels to be Published by Dark Horse Comics

Roye Okupe’s YouNeek Studios universe is going to be published by Dark Horse Comics. Okupe’s works were previously self-published. The Dark Horse Comics releases will include never-before-seen bonus material. The first graphic novels from the YouNeek Youniverse line being published by Dark Horse are Malika: Warrior Queen, Iyanu: Child of Wonder, and E.X.O: The Legend of Wale Williams.

Malika: Warrior Queen Volume 1, from Okupe, Chima Kalu, and Raphael Kazeem, releases on September 7, 2021. The graphic novel follows Malika. When she inherits the crown of from her father Azzaz splits in half, resulting in years of civil war. She will finally united the empire and grow, but expansion has its costs.

 Iyanu: Child of Wonder Volume 1, from Okupe and Godwin Akpan, will release on September 21, 2021. The graphic novel follows Iyanu, an orphan with amnesia. She discovers she has special abilities that would rival the deities from folklore. Her abilities may be the key to bringing back the “age of wonders” and save her world from destruction.

E.X.O: The Legend of Wale Williams Volume 1, from Okupe, Sunkanmi Akinboye, and Raphael Kazeem, releases on October 19, 2021. The graphic novel is described as “an Afrofuturist superhero story about redemption” and follows Wale Williams from the metropolis of Lagos, Nigeria. Williams moonlights as E.X.O. a tech savy superhero who battles deadly extremists.
