EMILY PRENTISS’ GOODREADS:
Tumblr media
THE HOLY BIBLE
multiple authors
★☆☆☆☆ 0.1
Overly-preachy narrative, too many plot holes. Profiled God as a malignant narcissist with an inferiority complex. Can’t blame Satan for lashing out at has dad like that, rebellion is typical of scapegoated children in a toxic family dynamic.
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE
J.D. Salinger
★★★★★ 5.0
Didn’t read it, five stars anyway because its reputation precedes it.
HOW TO FIND AT-RISK KIDS WHO GREW UP IN A 360-DEGREE ENVIRONMENT OF FAMILY VIOLENCE
David Rossi, Jason Gideon
★★☆☆☆ 2.0
Literally ruining my life. But two stars because I was high when I read it and it made my brain feel fuzzy in a good way.
THE LORD OF THE FLIES
William Golding
★★★☆☆ 0.3
Strong concept, disappointing lack of women.
SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE
Kurt Vonnegut
★★★★★ 5.0
It’s so freaky-deaky, I love it.

Kinda love that "well you see our community is very sensitive and insular, due to how cruelly mocked and slandered we were, the cruel words we endured...... it was very traumatic 🥺" bit that reylos do now but mostly because i only ever see it when they're denouncing a fellow shipper for doing some of most unhinged weird level 5 cyber bullying shit you've ever seen in your life.

Hey! Friendly reminder that if you use AI to “make art” or “write” a book and/or fanfiction, I want you to know that I think you’re a bad person! And no! You can’t change my mind(:
By using generative AI to push slop out into the world because you think it’s “too difficult” to learn how to write or create art, you make it clear that you do not value the labor of creatives. The reality is that you’re too fucking lazy to put in the countless hours it takes to become good at your craft. It means you don’t value the work of creatives whose work is being stolen.
Fuck you if you use generative AI. I hope you never know a day of peace in your life 🥰

006/100
Now, I usually don't like to judge other people's movie opinions. People can like what they like. But I have a feeling that a lot of people who don't like this movie simply don't get it! Like one of the first lines of the movie is someone looking directly at the camera and saying "it's time to cut out the cancer", followed by synth music credits. That was clearly a sign that you weren't supposed to take this movie seriously!
This film was so campy and I loved every minute of it! The hammy acting! The absurd dimensions of the house! A giant hospital/castle on the edge of cliff!! The villian doing back flips and spin kicks! All of this was aided by the fact that the movie had amazingly gorey special effects, a great soundtrack, and a contortionist who played the villian extremely well.
Overall, this is a movie that I highly recommend!

spooky tuesday is a (now not so new!) podcast where we’re breaking down all of our favorite slashers, thrillers, monster movies and black comedies on the new scariest day of the week.
malignant (2021) didn’t make the best first impression for us here at spooky tuesday — so we were a lil nervous to revisit it on our latest episode. but with thanksgiving right around the corner, we could think of no better time to cover such a family-focused flick, and boy are we glad we did. now that we’ve done our horror homework by exploring more of director james wan’s oeuvre and cinematic influences, we may have finally built the right foundation to appreciate this bonkers batshit off-the-wall movie for the messy, camp realness it is.
give spooky tuesday a listen on apple podcasts, spotify, iheart radio, or stitcher

Malignant (2021)
Tumblr media
Summary: Madison (Annabelle Wallis) has what she thinks are visions of people being murdered, but soon realises that they're real.
2hrs of Wan cutting loose after Aquaman. Anyone who says they saw the twist coming is a fucking liar.
Rating: 4.5/5

Malignant (2021)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have never seen 100% of a cast give 100% of their strength to a film like this. Holy shit. James Wan, you sick fuck, you have gained a new fan. I kiss you on the forehead. (EDIT: I didn’t realise how many of his films I had already watched and enjoyed, so this is a bonus.)
I will say the sound effects were a bit silly at times and made me chuckle. ONLY SOMETIMES! Besides that, so gorgeously scored, especially the spooky, hyperpop version of The Pixie’s Where is My Mind?
Crazy plot twist, gave me a crazy case of whiplash in the best way. If you are so inclined, I also highly recommend seeing how they filmed the twist parts, which I believe they posted to YouTube as a funky little BTS. Absolutely mind blowing!
Also: the sister is the definition of loyal! 💅🏻
You should watch if:
you’ll watch any movie for the ‘it’s coming from inside the house’ trope in horror
Similar titles to this:
Insidious (2010) (solely for the mental affects the entity has on the subject)
Ginger Snaps (2000) (sisterly bonds with a monstrous twist)

James Wan and the Art of the Jump Scare
Because I don't enjoy the act of thinking very often, I tend to stay away from films that I really like so that I don't have to articulate why they're good, but today I'm parting from that habit to talk about James Wan and the art of the jump scare. James Wan directed the first two Insidious movies, the first two Conjuring films, and for some reason Aquaman. He is a big-budget horror icon of sorts. So how is it that his movies suck so much less than all of the other films in the horror franchises that he's been a part of?
He's perfected the "cheap" jump scare, that's how.
I make this sound like I'm a hater, but I am so serious. I generally like pop-horror - the straightforward stuff that comes out around Halloween and is somehow always branded as "the scariest movie ever made", but it's really just a lot of stuff that pops out at you or screams at you or is suddenly standing behind someone. I love the Exorcist franchise, I love the Conjuring movies (so much so that I have the first two on DVD despite disc drives being nearly obsolete), and I love Lights Out. Of course I love Robert Eggers, Ari Aster and the other "artsy" directors, but I like something that has good payoff for the scares that I don't have to worry about once it's done.
James Wan is one of my favourite directors in the realm of pop-horror. His ability to establish a good atmosphere in his films is amazing. His ability to be creative with the "expected" jump scares is even better. His unexpected jump scares (Darth Maul in Insidious, the witch in the tree in the first Conjuring) are so much fun. Between his ability to build tension, and in particular his ability to use close up shots of his actors for his desired effect is awesome.
Truly, I have so much love for James Wan's brand of horror. Every instalment in the Conjuring franchise since his departure has been pure garbage. I have yet to watch his newest horror Malignant, so I hope it lives up to my expectations.

Just watched Malignant and okaaaay decent horror story if a little out there.
But would it kill writers or IDK, anyone involved, to stick medical conditions into a search engine and get the kind of important details correct?

31 Days of Horror Day 12: Malignant (2021)
Malignant (2021) is one of those films that I really want to love. It’s got a lot of great elements to it. Body horror, a solid mystery, large amounts of blood and gore, a really interesting reveal, and some solid acting. However, I think that it was shot and filmed in entirely the wrong way. Without further ado, I’ll just add the spoiler warning right now in case you want to turn…
